Erin Moran, ‘Happy Days’ actress, dead at 56

(CNN)Popular actress Erin Moran, a mainstay on TV from the late '60s to the mid-'80s and best known for her kid-sister role in the sitcom "Happy Days," has died. She was 56.

Authorities in Indiana found her body Saturday afternoon after getting a 911 call at 4:07 p.m. for "an unresponsive female," the Harrison County Sheriff's Department said.

"Upon the arrival, it was determined that the female was Erin Marie Moran-Fleischmann. First responders determined that she was deceased and an autopsy is pending," the department said.

Moran was cast as Joanie Cunningham, the younger sister of Richie Cunningham, who was played by Ron Howard, a child actor who is now a famed director.

"Such sad sad news ... I'll always choose to remember you on our show making scenes better, getting laughs and lighting up TV screens," Howard wrote on Twitter.

The show aired from 1974 to 1984. It was set in 1950s Milwaukee and was a big hit with a catchy theme song and memorable characters such as The Fonz, played by Henry Winkler.

Moran played the same character in the early 1980s in "Joanie Loves Chachi," a short-lived spinoff with her "Happy Days" co-star Scott Baio continuing his role as Chachi Arcola.

Other "Happy Days" spinoffs were "Laverne & Shirley" and "Mork & Mindy."

More of Moran's co-stars -- Henry Winkler, who played Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli; and Don Most, who played the goofball character Ralph Malph -- expressed their condolences on Twitter:

"OH Erin... now you will finally have the peace you wanted so badly here on earth," Winkler wrote.

"So incredibly sad to hear about Erin," Malph wrote. "A wonderful, sweet, caring, talented woman. I can't really comprehend this right now."

One of Moran's close friends, Erin Murphy, who played Tabitha on the 1960s series "Bewitched" also took on Twitter after Moran's passing.

"So sad to share that my friend Erin Moran has passed away. Rest In Peace, sweet girl," Murphy wrote.

First job, a commercial

According to IMDb, Moran was born October 18, 1960, in Burbank, California, and her first professional acting gig was in a TV commercial.

She made regular appearances on the series "Daktari" in the late '60s and "The Love Boat" in the '80s. She made guest appearances on TV shows such as "The Waltons," "My Three Sons" and "Gunsmoke."

In 2012, Moran was one of the "Happy Days" actors who won money in a settlement with CBS over merchandising payments.

She had been the subject of tabloid reports that she and her husband were living in a trailer in Indiana since losing her home to foreclosure in California. While other cast members continued to act or direct, acting work dried up for Moran.

IMDb lists just five acting credits from 1998 until her last role in 2010.

Telefilm anni '80: Charles in Charge (Babysitter)

"Charles in Charge" (in Italia meglio conosciuto come "Babysitter") fu una sit-com molto popolare alla fine degli anni '80, anche nel nostro Paese. Da noi venne trasmessa quotidianamente nel primo pomeriggio, su Italia 1, dopo "Casa Keaton", in quella stessa fascia oraria, che precedeva l'inizio dei compiti, che sarebbe stata di lì a poco opzionata da "Non è la Rai". Più precisamente, "Babysitter" si inscrive nella tradizione delle dom-com (contrazione di domestic comedy) ovvero le sit-com che ruotano tutte attorno ad una casa e alla famiglia che la abita. Il protagonista dello show aveva il volto grazioso, pulito e rassicurante di Scott Baio, fresco reduce da Happy Days, in cui interpretava il cuginetto di Fonzie nonchè fidanzato di Joanie "Sottiletta" Cunningham: Chachi Arcola. Tanto era piaciuto il personaggio di Chachi al pubblico americano, che Baio ne aveva vestito i panni anche nello spin-off "Joanie loves Chachi", in italiano "Jenny e Chachi" (e, chissà perchè, nell'adattamento italiano Joanie era diventata all'improvviso Jenny).

Ma torniamo a "Charles in Charge" e al babysitter che tutte le ragazzine tra gli 11 e i 15 anni avrebbero desiderato avere in casa. Charles (il cui cognome non viene mai rivelato, probabilmente per giocare con l'idea che si trattasse dello stesso  Charles “Chachi” Arcola, cresciuto) è uno studente universitario che lavora come “ragazzo alla pari”: riceve vitto e alloggio dalla famiglia Pembroke ed in cambio si prende cura dei figli (tutti già ragazzini o adolescenti) durante le ore di assenza dei genitori.

L’intera serie è ambientata in una villetta di New Brunswick, nel New Jersey: la casa (dei Pembroke, prima, e della famiglia Powell dalla 2a stagione in poi) nel cui seminterrato si trova la camera di Charles.

Charles e la famiglia Pembroke (stagione1)

"Charles in Charge" debuttò sulla CBS nel 1984 (mentre sarebbe arrivato in Italia solo nel 1988). Nella prima stagione lo squattrinato ma studioso protagonista, ha bisogno di trovare un alloggio vicino alla propria Università. Cercando una stanza in affitto, fa la conoscenza dalla famiglia Pembroke: i genitori Jill (Julie Cobb) e Stan (James Widdoes) sono assenti per molte ore al giorno a causa del rispettivo lavoro ed hanno tre figli alle prese con i problemi della pubertà e dell’adolescenza: Lila (April Lerman), polemica e spigolosa impegnata a gestire con alterno successo le proprie insicurezze adolescenziali, Douglas (Jonathan Ward), preadolescente nerd e un po’ strambo (una specie di Sheldon Cooper ante litteram) e Jason (Michael Pearlman), il figlio più giovane, spiritoso e precocemente sveglio.

Agendo più da fratello maggiore che da tata, Charles, riesce quasi sempre a gestire tutti i piccoli problemi della casa entro la fine della puntata, aiutato dall’amico del cuore Buddence “Buddy” Lembeck (Willie Aames, reduce da la Famiglia Bradford -in cui interpretava Tommy- e dal film esotico-sentimentale "Paradise" con Phoebe Cates, del 1982). Archiviati i ruoli da teen-idol, Aames si cimenta qui in un'inedita parte da spalla comica: l'entusiasta e svampito Buddy.

Charles ha anche una fidanzata: Gwendolyn Pierce (interpretata dall’attrice Jennifer Runyon, una quasi sosia di Elizabeth Shue).

La prima stagione di Charles in Charge (trasmessa in USA il mercoledì in prima serata) ebbe ascolti insoddisfacenti, tanto che la CBS volle cancellarla. Tuttavia, la Universal Television, decise di distribuire una seconda stagione in “first-run syndacation”, ovvero attraverso le reti locali, nel 1987, rinnovando però la quasi totalità del cast.

Charles e la famiglia Powell (stagioni 2-5)

Con il reboot del 1987, solo Scott Baio e Willie Aames vennero confermati nei loro ruoli di Charles e Buddy (quest’ultimo sempre meno donnaiolo e sempre più spalla comica per via della sempre più ostentata, incredibile ingenuità). La famiglia Pembroke, invece, giudicata non sufficientemente "simpatica", venne fatta "trasferire" a Seattle dalla nuova sceneggiatura, mentre la loro casa di New Brunswick veniva rilevata da una nuova famiglia: i Powell che avrebbero ereditato non solo l'appartamento ma anche il "babysitter" Charles.

La madre, Ellen Powell, era interpretata da Sandra Kerns (che, nonostante la somiglianza e l'omonimia, non era sorella nè parente di un’altra famosa madre di sit com ovvero Joanna Kerns di Genitori in Blue Jeans / Growing Pains).

Sandra Kerns di Babysitter (a sinistra) e Joanna Kerns di Genitori in blue jeans (a destra) Ellen, oltre a dover crescere tre figli da sola (poichè il marito, ufficiale della marina, è impegnato oltreoceano) ha anche un lavoro. Pertanto la presenza di Charles si rivela nuovamente utilissima a casa Powell. La figlia maggiore è Jamie Powell, popolare e frivola quattordicenne interpretata dalla già allora bellissima Nicole Eggert. In seguito la Eggert si sarebbe affermata come bellezza sexy con il ruolo della bagnina Summer Quinn di Baywatch, aggiungendo alle sue fattezze angeliche un seno al silicone di cui, molti anni dopo, si è pentita tornando a disfarsene chirurgicamente.

La secondogenita Sarah, tredicenne intelligente, sensibile ed introversa  era invece interpretata da Josie Davis.

Il giovane e sarcastico Adam (Alexander Polinsky) era l'unico figlio maschio.

L'aver sostituito ai Pembroke una famiglia in cui dominavano la scena due graziose teenager, aveva dato alla serie una nuova impronta. Per le ragazzine (pubblico principale della sitcom) era ora molto facile immedesimarsi in Jamie o Sarah e immaginarsi impegnate in un platonico rapporto privilegiato con un bel ragazzo, premuroso e divertente. L'attore James T. Callahan interpretava Walter Powell, burbero nonno, veterano di guerra, protagonista di molti momenti comici nel suo rapporto con “i giovani”.

Questa seconda vita dello show diede ottimi risultati, tanto che la serie venne rinnovata per ulteriori 3 stagioni, fino al 1990. Nel corso della serie, Ellen Travolta (sorella del più famoso John Travolta, che già interpretò il ruolo della madre di Scott Baio/Chachi in Happy Days) entrò a far parte del cast nel ruolo della svampita ed esilarante madre di Charles: Lillian.

Scott Baio e Bojack Horseman

Del tutto casuali, benchè sorprendentemente puntuali, sono oggi le analogie tra Scott Baio e il personaggio di Bojack Horeseman. Bojack è infatti la ex star della immaginaria sit-com "Horsin' Around" in cui uno scapolo si trova ad adottare e crescere 3 ragazzini orfani. Il rivale di Bojack è Mr Peanutbutter, anche lui protagonista di una sit-com quasi identica. Anche Scott Baio si trovava spesso a contendere gli ascolti con Tony Danza e la sua "Who's the Boss?" ("Casalingo Superpiù" in Italia) la cui trama era molto simile a quella del coevo Charles in Charge.

In tempi recenti, sull'onda dello scandalo che ha travolto Harvey Weinstein, anche Scott Baio è stato oggetto di denuncia per molestie. All'inizio del 2018, l'ex co-star Nicole Eggert (Jamie Powell) ha dichiarato di essere stata oggetto delle avance dell'attore per anni (l'attrice aveva 14 anni all'inizio della serie, mentre Baio ne aveva 26) e di aver avuto rapporti sessuali con lui quando ancora era minorenne. Anche Alexander Polinsky (che in "Babysitter" interpretava il piccolo Adam) ha denunciato il comportamento tenuto da Baio nei suoi confronti dicendosi oggetto di maltrattamenti, offese a sfondo omofobo e bullismo. Scott Baio ha respinto le accuse di entrambi, sostenendo che si tratti di assolute menzogne. Il caso è tutt'ora in mano ad avvocati e giudici americani.

La Eggert e Polinsky con il loro avvocato Sulla questione, la terza "ragazzina", Josie Davis (Sarah), si è espressa tramite un tweet in cui ha dichiarato di aver avuto sempre un rapporto sereno e professionale con Baio ma di non volersi esprimere ulteriormente sull'accaduto per rispetto di tutte le persone coinvolte nel caso legale.

L'odissea a lieto fine di Willie Aames

E Buddy Lembeck? Come se la passa oggi? Con il tramontare del proprio successo, Willie Aames ha affrontato una lunga lotta con l'alcolismo e la dipendenza da droghe. E' finito in bancarotta e si è trovato, per un periodo, perfino a vivere come senzatetto. Ma alla fine è riuscito a risollevarsi.
