Samtember 23: Happy Birthday
2193 Words | Rated G | For @samwilsonfest
Sam felt like he was missing something when he woke up this morning. But he shrugged it off, thinking that if it was important, it would come to him eventually. So he went on his usual run, came back home to shower, make himself coffee before heading out to the base to train Joaquin. All the while, he kept getting the sense that he was forgetting something important.
As he flew up in the air with Joaquin behind him, he heard the younger man's voice in his ear...
"Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear Sam. Happy birthday to you," he sang. "Sam, get to the ground, I want to show you something."
"Show me what?" Sam asked.
"Can't tell you, man. It's a surprise."
Sam rolled his eyes behind his goggles and dove towards the ground. When he got to his feet, he looked around and found a couple of guys from the air force standing around, looking up at the sky. Curious, Sam looked up too, and his eyes widened. Joaquin had written "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SAM," in the sky.
"Happy birthday, Sam."
"Happy birthday, Cap."
The air force guys wished him.
When Joaquin got back to the ground, he gave Sam a broad smile and pulled him into a hug, much to Sam's surprise. "Happy birthday, Cap!"
"Thanks, man," Sam awkwardly pat him on the back.
"Wanna get lunch? My treat," said Joaquin.
Sam contemplated the offer. He didn't have to do anything for the rest of the day and he was far from home, so it would be nice not to spend his birthday alone.
"Okay."
They ended up at a bar, although it was only 1 PM. After a cheeseburger, a couple of beers, and a great conversation with Joaquin, Sam was a happy camper. Once they finished lunch, Joaquin headed to the bathroom, giving Sam time to finally look at his phone.
"Shit," he hissed when he realized he had 20 missed calls from Sarah as well as 5 messages asking him to call her back.
Figuring that Sarah must want to wish him on his birthday, he called her back.
"Sam! Where have you been? I've been trying to reach you all morning!"
"Hello to you too, sis," Sam chuckled. "Sorry, I was a little busy--"
"Sam, I need you to come home."
Sam sat up straight, the buzz of the beer immediately wearing off when he heard the worry in his sister's voice. "What's wrong?"
"Can't tell you that over the phone. Could you please just come back today?"
"I- I can't drive. I've been drinking."
"It's only 2 PM there! Can't you catch a flight? I'll pick you up from New Orleans."
"Okay," Sam replied. "Yeah, okay, I'll be there. Whatever this is, can't it wait till tomorrow?"
"No, it's really urgent, Sam. I'm kinda in a whole lotta trouble."
"Shit, Sarah. What did you do?" Sam rubbed his forehead.
"Just get here!" Sarah said before hanging up.
"Everything okay?"
Sam looked up to find Joaquin giving him a concerned look.
"It's my sister. She's in some kinda trouble. She needs me home right away."
"Damn," said Joaquin. "What you gonna do now?"
"Head home." Sam sighed as he looked up flights on Google.
"You driving?" Joaquin asked.
"Been drinking, Joaquin. Can't drive," Sam replied, although he felt much sober now.
"I could drive you! A road trip will be nice!"
"You've been drinking too, buddy," Sam reminded him. Joaquin looked visibly disappointed, but he nodded. Sam booked the flight and got up from his seat. "Thanks for lunch, man. This was great. Let's catch up when I get back."
With that, he gave Joaquin a quick hug before heading back to his apartment to pack.

On the plane, Sam tried to relax but he couldn’t.
“You alright there?” Sam’s neighbor asked.
Sam tried not to groan. So the person beside him was a talker. “Yeah, I’m good,” Sam replied and finally looked over at the person. He had to do a double-take because the guy looked so much like Steve. But that wasn’t all. Sam had actually seen him somewhere before.
“Wait… Don’t I know you?” Both the guy and Sam asked at the same time. The guy laughed and shook his head.
“I’m Toby,” he introduced himself.
“You’re the guy that plays Steve Rogers on the Broadway show…” Sam trailed off. Sam felt a pang in his heart as he continued to watch the guy.
“Yeah and you’re the real Captain America,” the guy -Toby- said, giving him a smile. “Sorry, this must be really weird,” he continued.
“You have no idea.” Sam laughed humorlessly and shook his head.
“Can I ask you something?” Toby asked.
“No, he was a terrible singer,” Sam replied.
Toby looked confused for a second before he burst out laughing. “You a mind reader too, huh? Is that your superpower?”
“I wish,” Sam scoffed. “No, but really, what was your question?”
“Is he on the moon?” A smirk spread across Toby’s lips.
“Yeah, he’s totally on the moon. Just chilling up there. I actually fly up there every uh-- Monday and Thursday and we hang out.” Sam rolled his eyes.
That made Toby laugh even more. “Man, you’re hilarious,” as his laughter died down, a serious look spread across his face, “Can I make this even weirder?” He asked.
Sam raised an eyebrow at him but didn’t reply.
“Happy birthday,” said Toby.
“How did you--”
“I follow you. Quite extensively,” Toby replied, visibly cringing. “I am kind of a huge fanboy.”
Sam blinked at him and tried to find the right words. He was flattered… but also weirded out.
“And now you look like you’re looking for an escape route.” Toby awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck. “And that wasn’t even the weird part.”
“There’s more?” Sam asked, surprised.
“Yeah, I was going to ask if you would like to go out with me sometime?”
“Oh…” Sam mumbled. “Look, I’m flattered but…”
“But it’s weird. Dating your potentially dead best friend’s look alike?”
“Yeah, something like that,” Sam laughed awkwardly. “I wish the circumstances were different cause you’re a very good-looking guy. Besides, I live in D.C. and you live in New York… it wouldn’t work.” Speaking of New York, Sam looked down at his phone and realized he had no calls or messages from Bucky. He felt another pang in his heart. Did Bucky forget it was Sam’s birthday? Sam could forgive Sarah for forgetting since she was stressed out, but Bucky had no excuse.
“Hello?” Toby brought Sam out of his thoughts and Sam looked over at him to find the guy giving him a curious look. “You okay?”
“Yeah, I’m okay. And sorry again.”
“Oh, don’t sweat it. Can I have your phone?” Toby asked.
Sam looked at him suspiciously, but then he unlocked his phone and gave it to the actor.
“That’s my number. If you ever wanna watch the show, just hit me up and I’ll leave you the tickets. Or if you ever just wanna hang out, lemme know.” The guy gave him a charming smile that resembled Steve’s before handing over his phone.
They landed soon and Toby wished Sam a happy birthday once again before they parted ways.
Sam’s phone rang as he made his way to the exit and he quickly took it out, only to find it was Sharon. He tried not to sound disappointed as he answered the phone, “Hey Sharon.”
“Happy birthday, Sam,” she said, making Sam smile.
“Thanks,” Sam replied.
“Where are you? I was hoping to take you out to dinner tonight. Figured you wouldn’t want to be on your own on your birthday.”
“I’m in Louisiana,” Sam replied. “Just landed here.”
“Oh wow. That wasn’t in your plan until yesterday.”
“Plans changed,” Sam replied, shrugging, although she couldn’t see him.
“Well, I owe you dinner then,” said Sharon. “Catch up with me when you get back?”
“Will do.”
They said their goodbyes and hung up by the time Sam got to the exit. Sam then called up Sarah. “Where are you?” He asked.
“I’m almost there,” Sarah replied.
Sarah was there 5 minutes later and when Sam opened the passenger door to get in, he heard part of the conversation she was having on the phone. “I’m on my way,” she said to someone. “I swear Bu-- Bonnie, if you mess this up--”
Sam frowned at that. He was so sure Sarah was about to say Bucky.
“What, you too old to give your sister a hug now?” Sarah asked after she hung up.
Sam rolled his eyes at her dramatics and reached over to hug her. “How you doing?” He asked.
“I could be better,” Sarah replied.
Sam pulled apart and gave her a sympathetic look. “You wanna tell me what’s going on now?” He asked as she pulled out of the loading zone.
“When we get home,” Sarah replied. “Can we talk about something else for now?”
“Okay,” Sam sighed and let it go. For now.
They talked about Sam’s Cap job. Sarah seemed proud of him. She even said so multiple times, which made Sam smile throughout their ride to Delacroix.
“So who’s Bonnie and why were you threatening her?” Sam asked as they pulled up in the driveway.
“Oh, she’s just one of the moms in PTA. We have a fundraiser coming up but it’s hard to leave her in charge of things.” Sarah replied as she typed away on her phone.
“Then why do you?” Sam asked as he got out of the car and grabbed his backpack.
“I ask myself the same question,” Sarah mumbled under her breath, but Sam still heard it.
The house was eerily quiet when Sam and Sarah got inside. “Where are the boys?” Sam asked. But then he heard noises in the backyard and immediately became alert. “Is there someone back there?” Sam asked.
“Why don’t you go check it out?” Sarah suggested.
Her nonchalance took Sam aback but he said nothing as he made his way towards the backdoor.
“SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SAM!”
“Shit!” Sam almost fell back when a group of about 30 people greeted him in the backyard. “What is happening?” Sam asked, dumbfounded.
“Your birthday, that’s what, Uncle Sam!” AJ laughed as he and Cass came over and hugged him. “Happy birthday, Uncle Sam,” both kids wished him at the same time.
Sam felt a hand on his shoulder and turned around to see Sarah smiling broadly at him. “Happy birthday, Sam,” she wished him but couldn’t give him a hug as she was holding his birthday cake. So Sam gave her a side hug instead.
“Is Bucky here too?” He asked when he noticed the Oreo cake Sarah was holding.
“Yeah, he’s in the back there, trying but failing to grill,” she laughed. “Go get him while I get the cake set up.”
Sam nodded and made his way through the crowd, greeting and talking to pretty much everyone.
“So this is why I didn’t get any calls or messages from you,” Sam said when he finally got to Bucky.
Bucky turned around and smirked at him. “Had I known you were waiting for my call, Wilson--”
“I wasn’t!” Sam answered a little quicker than necessary.
“Right…” Bucky trailed off. “Well, get over here so I can wish you!”
“Alright, bossy,” Sam shook his head before walking over to Bucky and giving him a tight hug.
“Happy birthday, Sam,” Bucky said, hugging him back.
They pulled apart but stayed close together, Sam’s eyes briefly trailing down to Bucky’s lips.
“You gonna kiss me?” Bucky asked.
Sam immediately looked up at him. “What? No!”
“I wouldn’t be opposed to it if you did,” Bucky replied.
“Of course you wouldn’t,” Sam laughed and moved away from him. “So you and Sarah plan this?”
“The boys came up with the idea. Sarah called me up last week and asked if I was in. Of course, I was.”
“You came all the way from New York, just to prepare for my surprise birthday party?” Sam asked, feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.
“Don’t look too happy. I did it for Sarah and the boys.”
“Right…” Sam trailed off, rolling his eyes. “Whatever helps you sleep at night.”
“Nothing does. You’re kinda in my thoughts all the time.”
Sam opened and closed his mouth a few times but no words came out.
“I’m as the kids say ‘a simp for you’” Bucky snickered at his own terrible joke.
Sam put his hand behind Bucky’s head and pulled him in to kiss him. Bucky seemed surprised at first but then he kissed him back.
When they pulled apart, Sam smiled at Bucky. “Now come on. Time for my terrible Oreo cake.”
“Hey! It’s the best cake out there!” Bucky protested. “And this time I made it myself.” He added, much to Sam’s surprise.
“I didn’t have a death wish on my birthday,” Sam joked.
“Haha hilarious,” Bucky said with a roll of his eyes.
“I’m a grade-A comedian!” Sam winked at him.

Stare Enough
Fandom: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Pairing: Sam Wilson/Bucky Barnes Rating: T Word Count: 4034
Summary: Bucky's got a new stare. Sam spends all afternoon and most of the evening working up the courage to meet it.
Both Sam and the food are the main attraction at this party and the problem with that situation is that it takes so damn long for one main attraction to get a second to enjoy the other.
He’s grateful—god, is he grateful—for the turnout. Friends, neighbours, the kind of people he and Sarah call family without there being any actual relation by blood, they’ve all shown up. Since the Blip, Sam’s felt like he’s always around, but this feels like a real homecoming. No sadness, nothing bittersweet. It’s a celebration and he’s at the center of it. Him and the food.
At last, Sam’s done the circuit with his plate, spooning creamy salads and grilled vegetables, stacking shellfish pink as a sunrise. There’s a fresh-baked roll perched atop a scoop of sweet potatoes and caramelized onions that smells so fucking warm and mouth-watering he has to resist walking with his nose buried in it. He collects a set of utensils furled in the middle of a paper napkin (courtesy of an efficient assembly line of old ladies, chatting and twisting neat rolls of cutlery), plate bowing into the palm of his other hand, and that’s when his damn phone vibrates in his pocket.
Sam halts and makes a sound of frustration. Nobody’s come to this thing empty-handed, so there are dishes crowding the surface of the tables, no place to set his plate down. His phone vibrates again. A teenager comes up to peruse the spread in front of him and Sam sighs, knowing what he’s about to do.
“Here,” he says heavily, offering up his beautifully arranged and wonderfully fragrant meal. The cob of corn shining with the butter he lovingly smeared over it nearly rolls over the edge. “You’re the luckiest kid in the world.”
Quickly, Sam turns away, sliding out his phone and bringing it to his ear. He doesn’t want to witness the boy digging in. His stomach growls as he greets Joaquin Torres.
“Sam,” Torres says. “Uh, I mean, sir. Mr. Captain Am… Captain Wil—”
“Take it easy,” Sam laughs. “You know me, Torres. Don’t get starstruck now.”
“Honestly, I never really got over you being the Falcon. Now that you’re Captain America… Apologies if it takes me a little while to be cool about it.” After a pause—taken while Torres attempts to become cool with Sam being Captain America, Sam assumes—he asks, “You celebrating?”
Not far from where Sam’s standing, there are two little girls singing along to their clapping game. At a table behind them, a trio of elderly gentlemen are arguing over which one of them it was that caught that 50-pound snapper off the dock back in 1978. There’s a sear of meat and fish being rotated onto and off of the grill and, bouncing over everything, music from a speaker someplace.
“Yeah,” Sam says with a broad grin. “Yeah, we are. I’d save you a plate, but I can’t even manage to hang onto my own.”
He doesn’t mention that Torres is responsible for that situation; he’s aware that, besides being a fan, the Lieutenant is a little bit infatuated with him. Sam’s trying to be gentle until the day he can respond to Torres with friendly smack-talk, the way he would Steve or Scott or Bucky. Maybe not exactly like he does with Bucky.
“Don’t worry about it,” Torres cheerfully insists. “I wasn’t calling for that, I just wanted to give you a heads up about something.”
“Alright. Let me just…”
Sam strides away from the heart of the party towards the water, seeking quiet. Kids dart in front of him and that’s nothing unusual, but when he follows them with his gaze, he sees they’re running towards Bucky. Bucky, who has his Vibranium arm extended and two kids dangling off it already, one of whom might be Sam’s nephew. Of course, Mr. Casual, Mr. Smiles, Mr. Social Butterfly, is carrying on a conversation like his arm isn’t being used as a jungle gym. A conversation with Sarah.
For just a moment, Sam stops in his tracks, considering whether he should go over there and break up any potential flirting. But then he watches them. Bucky’s just talking to her, not flicking his gaze up and down while he checks her out. And Sarah, she’s relaxed and smiling, totally at ease, like Bucky’s another member of their community. That makes him a friend. Family.
That’s one thought too far and Sam jerks himself into motion again, walking until he’d be swimming with another step.
“What’ve you got for me?”
“Well, I’ve been trying to watch as much of the coverage of the fight outside the GRC vote as I can, trying to get a sense of how they’re spinning Walker’s reappearance, the legacy of the Flag-Smashers now that Karli and her inner circle are gone… Anyway, there’s a lot of footage and you’re at the center of most of it.”
“Guess the new suit draws the eye. And the cameras.” It’s no surprise to Sam. Part of the job of being Captain America.
“Yeah, but…”
“What is it, Torres?”
“Bucky’s in the background a lot,” he explains in a voice that tells Sam there’s more Torres isn’t saying.
“Makes sense. He was in the thick of it as much as I was.”
“He’s there at the end too. When you were talking to the Senator about power and the common struggle. Man, that was a great speech. Do you think—”
“Torres. Please. The point.”
“Right, for sure, man. Bucky never takes his eyes off you.”
That flusters Sam for a second. He wasn’t expecting the blunt delivery, especially of those words. He squints down at the water where it’s lapping the side of the dock. He knew Bucky was there; they spoke right after, when Bucky tried to feed him that bullshit (and he knew it was bullshit at the time) about texting and missing the exact speech Torres is apparently still hung up on.
“So Bucky was actually listening to me,” Sam says carefully. “That’s a surprise, but it isn’t really the kind of thing that’s significant enough for you to bother notifying me about, is it?”
“I’d say that depends on what you consider significant.”
“Torres.”
“I know, but he’s not just listening! It’s how he’s looking at you!”
“Like he’s wishing I would wrap it up?” Oh, Sam remembers Bucky’s miracle from their session with Dr. Raynor.
“Like he’s totally into you! Major heart eyes. Sir,” Torres hastily adds.
And Sam should reprimand him for this. Calling with a trivial piece of information when he must know Sam’s already being very selective about which of the hundreds of recent calls (and it’d be more if more people had this number) he chooses to pick up. Calling to speculate on how Bucky was staring at Sam that night in New York.
“I don’t need to tell you this is gonna be one of those investigations we keep between you and me,” Sam states.
“For sure. I just thought maybe you’d wanna know.”
“Uh huh. You get any real news, you pass it along.”
“I will.”
Sam ends the call and turns. He looks to his right: the sparkling river. His left: his people, all the way down to the squirt with the glasses who’s hanging off a metal arm, and the man that arm belongs to.
He’s felt it, the way that Bucky stares. It’s not like it used to be though, when it irked Dr. Raynor at the police station in Baltimore, or confused Walker and Hoskins in the back of that jeep in Germany. This new stare of Bucky’s isn’t one Sam’s ever caught him doing. Bucky hasn’t quite let him. That’s actually how Sam noticed it was happening—Bucky would immediately glance away instead of leaving that dead expression on his face when Sam met his eye. Now that he has proof of it, proof he’s certain Torres would send him footage of in an instant if he asked, he’s scared to look.
Instead, he watches Bucky look at other people. Like Sarah. Like kids from the neighbourhood. His literal hangers-on disperse as Sam observes, scattered after Bucky leans towards them to say something. Sam sees half his smile and even that much has his heart swelling up in his chest. Bucky weaves through the tables and standing groups, the dancers and the kids who’ve broken out a skipping rope. (After eating from that buffet? Kids are crazy. Gonna make themselves sick.)
Without thinking too hard about it, Sam returns to the noise and the smells, trailing Bucky with a stealthy eye on his ass in those jeans. There’s no friction here between him and everybody else Sam cares about, he can see that in every short, friendly exchange someone engages Bucky in as he walks. Things flow as smoothly as the butter oozing off the corn Sam reluctantly gave up. Clearly, they remember Bucky from when he was here helping with the boat. They respect him. They like him. They’ve gotten to that last thing faster than Sam has, which makes Sam feel a little embarrassed as well as a little overwhelmed by how much the two of them have actually been through. He’s seen Bucky as a mindless killer and it almost brings a genuine tear to his eye—here on this glorious day in front of all these folks—to see the dork who rushed out to get his hands on a copy of The Hobbit in 1937 return in his current form as the dork who’ll take a fake punch from AJ and blush over brazen old women telling him how handsome he is.
Bucky stares different? Well. Sam feels different about the staring.
Sam keeps his distance until Bucky reaches the food, then his stomach gurgles a reminder than he hasn’t eaten yet. No ass is nice enough to distract him from his meal. He sidles up beside him and Bucky seems unsurprised, not even glancing over.
“Anything important?” he asks.
“What?”
“Your phone call,” Bucky clarifies, adding a heap of glossy green beans to his plate. Damn, those are some of Sam’s favourite. Bucky better not take all of them. “They need us somewhere?”
“Oh. No.”
Bucky shoots him a suspicious look after this stilted response, but he doesn’t say anything until Sam grabs a plate of his own, hungry eyes roving the feast that’s diminishing now that people have started coming back for second helpings.
“Put that down,” Bucky instructs. He doesn’t wait; he takes the plate out of Sam’s hand and tosses it back towards the pile. Thankfully, the plates are made of paper.
“Buzz off, man,” Sam tells him, reaching for the plate again. “I’m starving.”
“I figured.”
Wait.
“That’s for me?” he guesses, gazing longingly at the plate Bucky’s preparing.
“Yep.”
When Sam doesn’t reply, Bucky pauses with the plate in one hand and a serving spoon in the other and sighs.
“I didn’t want you to miss the good stuff. This party’s for you.”
“I think it might be for both of us.”
Bucky seems too self-conscious to say anything to that. He goes back to loading up Sam’s plate while Sam quietly feels his throat close up with emotion as he watches. He clears it gruffly.
“I woulda had to eat the cake you brought,” he jokes. “Pretty sure only the really little kids have eaten any. You know, people who don’t know better.”
“I was tryin’ to be a good guest.”
“I can’t believe you brought a store-bought cake,” Sam says, laughing as he grabs a set of cutlery for the second time and continuing to shuffle along next to Bucky.
“Have you ever seen me cook?”
“…No.”
“Exactly. Trust me, what I did was kinder.”
“If you say so.”
“You know what, Sam?” Bucky demands challengingly, turning to face him. “I do say so.”
Sam’s eyes go from the plate Bucky’s holding between them up to Bucky’s face. He’s close. And he’s got this look, this dancing look in his eyes that undercuts the shit out of the hard line of his eyebrows. Trying to seem all stern. All Sam can think for several seconds is that, if he just grabbed Bucky by the chain around his neck and hauled him forward, they’d never get the food stains out of their clothes. But their laundry would smell delicious.
He clears his throat.
“Then you better stay for a while.”
The corner of Bucky’s mouth twitches up and he hands Sam the plate he’s prepared for him.
“I plan to.”
When Sam picks a table to sit at, he makes sure there’s enough room for Bucky too. When Bucky sits next to him, he sits so close that their thighs press together and claims that’s all the space there is. Bucky talks and laughs when other people at the table talk to him. He’s easily drawn into conversation now and Sam feels weirdly proud of having brought this great guy home to meet everybody, even if he’s not here like that. People tells stories about last week and last century interchangeably, one old smartass making Bucky howl with laughter when they toss out a memory of Little Sam Wilson streaking from his house to the river for a naked swim. This is the danger of welcoming Bucky into the community. Sam, suppressing a smile, doesn’t really mind.
Elbows up on the table so he can eat, talk, and gesture emphatically with his fork, Sam feels Bucky’s stare creeping up on him. Slow, like the sun slides across the landscape when the clouds blow past. Bucky didn’t make this food, but Sam can feel his satisfaction as he watches Sam accept what he provided. Feels like there are grasshoppers springing around in his stomach. He still has a roll on his plate, one side soaked in family-secret barbecue sauce, and he tears it in half. While the rest of their table are caught up in some story being boisterously told by overlapping voices, Sam turns to Bucky and wordlessly offers the bread, edges dimpled where he gripped to split it. They watch each other chew and Sam’s closed mouth is smiling.
Inevitably, somebody pulls Sam back into the conversation and he does his best to laugh and heckle, covering the fact that he wasn’t listening, that he dropped the thread. The voices rise and rise and fall like water slopping over the side of a bucket.
In the next quiet moment, Bucky inclines toward him slightly and says, “You wanna talk later?”
And Sam says, “Sure.”
The day feels long, long, long, and Sam’s face gets sore from smiling, tired from talking. He does not confess that to Bucky, who’s almost always at his side. Lights go on overhead and beers come out of coolers, leftover food packed up and redistributed among neighbours, small children with drooping eyelids toted home. At first, Sam thinks Bucky’s leaning into his side because he’s drained from so much socializing too, but when he meets his eye, he just sees an invitation.
“Where are you two goin’?” Sarah asks when they slink past her carrying a too-big Cass in her arms.
“Just walkin’,” Sam tells her.
“Gotta stretch our legs,” Bucky contributes.
She looks from Sam to Bucky and back, smiling knowingly.
“Uh huh,” Sarah says.
Sam grabs Bucky by the shoulder to turn him forcibly away from his sister’s insinuations and just… forgets to let his hand fall as they wander along the water. Bucky’s steps angle towards his until his arm’s bumping Sam’s side, Sam’s arm slung around his shoulders. Is this still the body language of a couple buddies on a warm Delacroix night? Is it now, when Sam drops his arm and brushes the back of his hand across Bucky’s?
They leave the party lights on the horizon with the lazily setting sun, scrabbling off the end of the dock and onto the riverbank. Sam reaches up to give Bucky a hand down, so he won’t step in the soft mud and sink to his ankles. Bucky clasps his hand firmly and jumps.
The sound of people drops off down here and the sound of wind in grass, frogs hiding between reeds, rises.
“Are there alligators in here?” Bucky wonders, scanning the river’s edge.
Sam laughs.
“For sure.”
“And you swam here when you were a kid?”
“Even then,” Sam boasts, puffing his chest out, “my courage was legendary.”
“Yeah, and your nudity. Is there anyone within a mile of here who hasn’t seen your bare ass?”
Their eye contact holds. Oh right. Sam breaks away with an awkward, hiccupping laugh, directing his gaze at the dirt.
“The gators haven’t gathered too close to the dock in decades,” he promises Bucky. He stares out at the undisturbed water, enjoying the sun on his face. “Got skittish of the boats. Most of ’em, anyway.”
“Consider me not entirely reassured.”
“You scared of a little Louisiana lizard, man? Didn’t you grow up with Creature from the Black Lagoon?”
“Nah, that was after my time.”
“Damn, you’re old.”
Bucky snorts a laugh, refusing to look at him.
“You wanna take a dip?” Sam goads.
“No.”
But by the time Sam’s pulling his shirt over his head, Bucky’s peeling off his socks. Sam spares him a smile and keeps going, the ground soft underfoot. It could be like the few times they’ve changed in proximity to one another before, but it’s not. He senses Bucky’s eyes on him the whole time. Face hot, he takes a quick look in Bucky’s direction as he’s unzipping his jeans. His heart feels like his new suit—wings just waiting to unfurl.
When they’re down to their underwear, they wade in.
God, it feels nice. The water’s cool and the sun’s clinging to the horizon.
“Just don’t get any water in your mouth,” Sam instructs, then dunks his face and comes up squirting water at Bucky from between the gap in his front teeth, a trick he perfected as a kid. “That arm ain’t gonna rust, right?”
“You asked for this,” Bucky warns. He points a menacing finger and plunges below the surface.
Sam twists as he treads water, trying to see what’s going on down there, searching for a ripple or bubbles of released air. His legs move in twitchy kicks because that’s where he’s expecting Bucky to grab him. But the idiot is playing some kind of psychological game first, making Sam wait a full minute. Two minutes. Three.
He’s opening his mouth to call out Bucky’s name when he breaks the surface. Sam’s ready to swap the concern he was about to form into words into a taunt instead—did Bucky get down there and decide the scariest thing he could do was let Sam’s imagination take over?—until Bucky shakes his head and slicks his hair back. Then the words get caught in Sam’s throat and he just kinda stares.
“There was a really gross fish down there,” Bucky informs him. “Do you guys have eels there? Mighta been an eel. Maybe we should get out.”
“Alrighty, scaredy-cat, let’s get you to shore.”
Bucky propels himself out in front, arms moving in powerful strokes, and Sam’s hand darts out on instinct, fingers closing around Bucky’s hard calf muscle. Bucky jerks and Sam burst into loud laughter.
“Did you think that was an eel? Did you?”
“You’re lucky I…”
I’m lucky you what? Sam wants to ask when Bucky trails off, but he just swims after him.
During their game/possible eel panic (there’s no way it was an eel), they weren’t always fighting the current, so they’ve drifted downstream some. Bucky takes sloppy, sloshing steps out of the water, underwear that might’ve been light grey now dark and plastered to his ass. Sam feels like he’s choked on river water, though his mouth is dry. He lumbers out too and they begin the march back in the direction of the dock and their clothes. The water tickles as it runs down Sam’s legs; must be bugging Bucky too because he plucks his waistband away from his skin before letting it snap back. Clenching his jaw, Sam stops himself from trying to see too much.
This end of the dock is made of old boards before it transitions to pavement farther down, wood smooth on Sam’s feet when he and Bucky haul themselves up, dropping their collected clothes and shoes into a single pile. No point getting dressed until they’re dry, so they sit on the edge of the dock, feet swinging. Feels good. Feels home. They don’t speak until the sun’s set, the sky orange, then grey, then rich, velvety blue.
“You know, don’t you?” Bucky asks softly.
“Know?”
“Yeah, you know. Whenever you don’t know something, you talk and talk—”
“Sometimes I can work through a problem better if I vocalize,” Sam explains.
“But when you do know,” Bucky goes on, ignoring Sam’s input, “you’re quiet.” He looks at Sam. “You’re quiet.”
What else is Sam? Nervous. His skin’s prickling with it, and because even the warm air feels cold when he’s just climbed out of the river. There’s a wet patch spreading around him that he can barely see with evening rapidly deepening into night. He lifts a hand from the dock and sweeps it up his neck, brushing water droplets away.
Without glancing over, he says, “You’re doing that thing you do.”
“What?”
“Staring. That new stare you do.”
“Maybe,” Bucky acknowledges. A bird starts calling, the sound drifting in and away like the sway of a hypnotist’s watch and Bucky’s silent until it’s over. “Maybe I’m staring for the same reason you’re quiet.”
Sam waits. Bucky doesn’t add anything, so Sam turns to look at his face, hung with cool shadows.
“You’re not gonna say it, are you?”
“I thought you would say it,” Bucky argues defensively.
“You’re the one who’s been staring at me like that for a week. You should go first!”
“Please, you don’t even know how I’m staring at you, I only do it when you’re not looking.”
“Do it now then and see what happens,” Sam dares him.
“Fine.”
Just like that, Bucky locks in like Sam’s attention is the only handhold on a sheer cliffside. Vital and stable, a last chance, the one thing around him that wants to help him higher instead of watching him fall. A lot of that’s familiar from his regular hard stare, but then something opens up behind his eyes. Some fragile thing (that might be Bucky’s sense of caution) breaks. Suddenly, Sam’s seeing what Joaquin saw in the news footage and amateur cell phone video. Except he’s seeing it two feet in front of him. It’s intense. It makes the air a little harder to breathe.
Bucky’s lips curve into a smile, then part as he says, “I love—”
Hopefully, he wasn’t going to end that sentence with ‘store-bought cake,’ because Sam can’t really take back his reaction. The finger slipping behind Bucky’s ear as he cradles his face, the mouth sealed to his. Especially that. Thankfully, Bucky kisses him back, just as hard, and then harder.
“Thank god,” Sam pants when they break apart.
“You interrupted me.”
“I got you to stop talking? Guess we’re in my miracle.”
“I’d complain…” Bucky shrugs. “…but your miracle is pretty nice.”
“Not bad, right?”
He sighs and looks out over the water. Bucky pushes up on his fists and sits closer, offering his hand for Sam to interlace their fingers.
“Hey,” Sam prompts when it hits him that it’s super dark outside and they aren’t gonna dry much more like this, “did you book a hotel room again?”
“You kiddin’ me? I spent all my money on that cake.”
Sam laughs.
“Right, well, I guess you need a place to stay tonight then.”
“You know anything nearby?” Bucky asks with a soft smile.
Getting to his feet and bracing to pull Bucky up after him, Sam uses his free hand to motion towards their clothing pile.
“Put your pants on,” he says, “and I’ll see what I can do.”

merry christmas
warning: death l w: 1209 l im a god
summary: a christmas mission goes so, so wrong
***
“Merry Christmas,” Bucky said, already up, as Sam rose from the bench on the jet. Alright, maybe being on a jet flying to take down a Hydra base wasn’t the best way to spend Christmas, but a smile slid onto Sam’s face nonetheless. “Sorry its not what it should’ve been.”
“Its fine, really, Buck. Its perfect the way it is.” Poor Joaquin has to deal with them today. Bucky gave him a speculative look. “I’m being honest.”
“If you say so, Sam. I just- you should be with your family.”
“I got enough family right here.”
“God, you’re hopeless.” Bucky commented, a fond smile on his face. Sam grinned back, shaking his head. He gets up with a small grunt.
“Hypocrite.” Sam grumbled, pressing a kiss to Bucky’s forehead. Bucky smiled watching as Sam walked away. He’d get him home for Christmas, he knew he would.
~~~~~~~~~~
“Sam?” The air had gone dead quiet, as if time was frozen. Bucky could feel the air he let in and out, feel his heart beating inside his chest.
“I’m here.” Sam croaked out over comms. Bucky’s breath quickened. Sam didn’t sound alright. Sam didn’t sound alright at all.
“Sam.” Bucky breathed out, running to where Redwing said Sam was. “Sam, stay with me.”
“Who said I was leaving?” Sam's voice was hoarse, as if the air was knocked from his lungs.
After a few twists and turns, he found Sam. Doubled over, gasping for breath, and clutching the knife in his stomach. “Sam.” Bucky felt as if his worlds were colliding, collapsing. He kneeled down beside Sam, staring in disbelief. Sam’s hand was soaked in blood, and his face was twisted in pain. “Sammy, hey, you with me?”
“It hurts, Buck.” Sam muttered, his voice wobbly, and Bucky has to resist the urge to breakdown. “It hurts so bad.”
“I know, Sammy, I know. Look at me, Sam.” A gentle hand reach to guide Sam’s face to look at Bucky.
“Hey.” Sam croaked out, leaning into Bucky’s touch.
“Hi.” Bucky chocked out. “Medics are on their way, okay? Can you hang on till then?”
“I don’t know. I can’t-” Sam is gasping for air, tears rolling down his cheeks. The super soldier wipes a few them away with his thumb, finding that the warmth from the dark brown eyes are draining as the seconds past. “I can barely think, Jamie.”
“Its gonna be okay. I promise you.” Bucky send he’d get him home for Christmas, but not like this. He can’t even imagine coming home with nothing but a message. A message that Sam’s gone. That he let him slip through his fingers. When Bucky was supposed to cover his six. Supposed to make sure he makes it home after every mission. And look where that got them. Broken and battered and barely breathing.
“Let me go. I can’t keep holding on like this, Buck.” Sam was pleading for the end. The end of time was ticking down at an alarming pace. “Please, take the knife out.”
“You’ll die.” Bucky wasn’t exactly sure when he started crying, when the tears fell from his eyes, seemingly never ending.
“Please.” Sam’s voice was barely a whisper, and his eyes grew grey, and his joy, his warmth, his life drained from his face like champagne on New Years day.
“Okay.” It was the least Bucky could do. And the last thing he wanted to do. The knife slid slowly, causing an ear-splitting scream to shake from Sam’s lips. The seconds felt as if they were passing by in hours. The consequences of this knife clattering to the pavement, bloody with Sam’s blood, will be never ending. Bucky knew what this job meant, knew it wasn’t really a job at all, more of a sacrifice that waits in the shadows to strike. It's chosen the worst moment to drag its bloody knife along the lives of the Wilsons.
“I’m sorry it had to end how it did, Sammy.” Bucky choked out, tears streaming down his face.
“D-don’t.” Sam stuttered out. “I g-got to s-spend Christmas w-with y-you.” Sam smiled up at him, even though it took all the strength Sam had not to let go.
“Merry Christmas, Sam. I’m sorry-” Bucky was gonna apologize for not being there when Sam needed him most. For not allowing him to go home for Christmas to his family. For not trying to save him when he could’ve. For taking this mission. For promising that they’ll be home for Christmas, when in reality, Sam would never see his nephews open presents on Christmas morning. Never get to see who they grow into. Sam would never get to scold Sarah for doing too much at once. Never get to drag Bucky out of bed to go to an interview neither of them really wanted to go to. Apologizing for Sam’s life being cut too short, and the people around him losing their lifeline. But Sam interrupted with,
“Shhh. D-don’t. M-merry Christmas. Love you.” And Sam’s eyes grew cold, his breath grew short, a small exhale, and Sam was gone. And with him, so was Bucky.
“Sam.” Bucky breathed out, pleading for him to come back, even though he knew Sam was gone.
A wick on a candle dwindles by the fire you light. Bucky hoped he was some small part of that fire. The fire that lit when Sam needed it most. Bucky’s touch, Sarahs smile, AJ and Cass’ laughter, Steves voice, Natashas eyes. Every little thing that broke him and stitched him back together again and again and again, until the flame burns out. Until the harsh reality that Sam, the flame, the fire of so many lives, is gone. The warmth of home and comfort of his brown eyes sink like ships in high tides. And the only thing Bucky could do now is mourn the loss that he has to hold in his heart. Pain that would weave itself into Bucky like vines on trees. Strong and relentless.
~~~~~~~~~~~
When Bucky goes back to Louisiana to deliver the news, he can’t bare to stay much longer. He packs his bags as Sarah tries to put the pieces of her life back together that have now cracked like glass. As AJ and Cass stand helpless, holding another loss on their young shoulders.
Maybe Bucky comes back. Comes back on a hot summer day, and Sarah hugs him, and the boys come up, a few inches taller than Bucky last saw. And they’ll laugh and smile, and Bucky will probably cry because thats who he is as a person. But the warm sun that hangs in the blue sky can’t fill the void of Sam’s smile. Bucky can feel it, feel his absence in the community. And it hurts. Hurts to know Bucky isn’t the only one who feels like this. As if his life has been soaked in bleach, dull. Empty. Lost. The feeling of grief is as easily contagious as Bucky predicted.
The death of Sam Wilson hangs heavy over the world. But Bucky must mourn in silence. Loving Sam was one of the greatest adventures Bucky ever chosen to take. But losing him was the worse consequence. No matter how much love, the loss is what you remember.

Tumblr media
The diner was quiet today, for which you were eternally grateful, one of the waitresses had called in sick so it was just you and two other waitresses in, it was supposed to be your day off. You had owned this diner with your ex-husband, you two had been on the verge of a getting a divorce when he was taken by the blip. When he returned a few months ago it was clear that it wasn’t going to work so you mutually parted ways. Now, the most you saw of him was when he visited your son, James and took him every other weekend.
You smiled as middle school sized footsteps thudded against the floor as James ran from the back to where you were standing behind the counter. You kissed James on the cheek as you ruffled a hand through his curls, laughing when he scowled and poured himself some soda.
“Homework done?” you asked, raising an eyebrow, “you know the rules, no soda until you’ve finished your homework,” you smiled as you folded your arms, leaning against the counter.
James rolled his eyes, “yes mom,” he sighed, like you had asked him the same question a hundred times. James glanced over to the door as it opened and he gasped as his jaw went slack before he beamed at you, “mom look,” he lowered his excited voice, “it’s The Falcon! He’s so cool!” there was nothing but pure awe on his face, “can I go and say hello?”
Sure enough, Sam Wilson aka, The Falcon walked in, in all his handsome glory as he took a seat at one of the booths. You felt a blush rise to your cheeks, you felt as star struck as your son but for a completely different reason. The waitress that you were on shift with wandered over to him to take his order, and you turned back to James who gave you a strange look when he saw the blush on your face.
“No sweetie, the poor man has just sat down; let him have his food in peace.”
James pouted as he began to sulk, shaking his head. You didn’t know Sam personally but he worked for the air force along with your brother, Joaquin. He had been as excited as James when he realised that Sam was going to be working with him. A couple more customers came in and sat at the counter, you chatted with them as you prepared their coffee.
You glanced up when you heard the little bell above the door tinkle and in walked your brother with a wide grin on his face as he went to sit with Sam. Had they just completed a mission together?
“Uncle!” James shouted with glee and before you could stop him, he rushed around the counter and launched himself into Joaquin’s arms. You winced with a sigh; you had wanted Sam to have some peace as he ate his dinner.
“There he is! My favourite little man, you alright? Where’s your mom?” at the mention of you, you ducked behind the coffee machine, your cheeks blazing.
James muttered something that you couldn’t make out, no matter how much you strained to hear it. Unfortunately, you heard the reactions; you heard Joaquin burst out into peals of laughter while Sam let out a deep laugh that made you feel all warm and tingly inside. Despite yourself, you leaned around the side of the coffee machine to see what was going on.
Joaquin had his head in his hands, his shoulders shaking with laughter while Sam smiled and raised an eyebrow as he looked over towards you and grinned. You flushed and offered him a small smile, you seriously wanted to know what James had said to them.
“James!” you called over with wide eyes.
James pouted as he got up from his seat, turning back to look at Sam, “will you please sign my comic book, Mr Wilson?” he asked, at least he was polite.
“Sure, little man,” Same beamed and James excitedly ran into the back.
Joaquin followed James, smirking at you; you stopped Joaquin with a hand on his arm, “what the fuck did James say?”
Joaquin didn’t answer, he only winked at you as he walked past you, whistling all the way, you glared after him, feeling annoyed. You bit your lip and decided to offer some coffee to Sam as a peace offering. Nervously, you wandered over to him, willing the flush on your cheeks to go away as you filled up his cup.
“I’m really sorry about that by the way,” you smiled, “my son doesn’t understand personal space.”
Sam laughed as he gave you a warm smile, “thank you, and it’s no problem. He seems like a great kid.”
You flushed with pride as you ducked your head, “even so, it must get annoying after a while.”
Sam looked puzzled as he shook his head, “I’m still getting used to it, I still can’t believe they’ve made a damned comic book.”
You giggled, “yeah, it came out a couple of years after the blip, everyone thought that you were a real hero,” you flushed when Sam grinned at you, “your comic books are James’ favourite, I’m kind of jealous.”
Sam smiled, shaking his head as he sipped some of his coffee, “they should make comic books about you, don’t you run this place and look after James by yourself?”
Normally, you wouldn’t talk about this with someone you hardly knew, but Sam was so handsome and kind that you couldn’t stop the words spilling from your lips, “it’s not so bad, Joaquin, Torres to you,” you laughed, “helps out where he can and James’ dad isn’t too bad, he’s a good dad.”
“Well, I think it’s really great, Y/N. You should be proud that you’ve raised such a good kid.”
“I think you’re great too you know,” you blurted out, feeling heat wash over you as Sam smirked, raising an eyebrow as you immediately started to babble, “I mean, being a hero, the fact that you’re a hero is great.”
You laughed nervously as you tucked a strand of hair behind your ear and before you could say anything else, James was running back with his comic book in hand and he gave you a strange look. You had the sneaking suspicion that he and Joaquin had been watching your interaction with Sam; you glared at your younger brother as he threw an arm around your shoulders.
“This is my favourite issue!” James beamed as he passed Sam the comic book.
Sam smiled as he raised an eyebrow at the cover, “damn, I’m gonna have to start reading these,” he muttered as he opened the front page and started to sign it. He was writing for a little while, it looked like he was writing a little message for James, “there you go, buddy.”
When Sam slid the comic book back over to James, James grinned as he read the little message, his face glowing; “thank you so much!” it was so amazing to see him so happy.
“You’re welcome bud!”
“Thanks Sam,” you smiled at him and he nodded, winking at you. You bit your lip and looked back at the counter to see your employees smirking at you, “I’m sorry, I should get back to work,” you smiled, fiddling with your fingers.
“Of course,” Sam nodded.
“See ya later, sis,” Joaquin grinned at you as you made your way back to the counter and glared at your employees playfully to keep them quiet.
All afternoon, you kept sneaking glances at Sam, he was so gorgeous as he laughed with your brother but what you didn’t notice was the fact that Sam kept stealing glances at you too. When it was time for Sam and your brother to leave, Sam walked up to the counter with a grin that made your heart flutter and he paid his bill with one of the other waitresses.
“It was good to meet you, Y/N,” he smiled.
You blushed as you nodded, biting your lip, “it was nice to meet you too, Sam. Thank you so much for being so great with James.”
Sam shook his head with a smile, “it’s not a problem at all,” he slipped you a piece of paper and you blushed when you realised it was his number. You weren’t exactly ready for another relationship too soon but you were going to call him.
“Call me,” he grinned before heading back to Joaquin, “let’s go, Torres,” he glanced at you over his shoulder.
Joaquin threw his hands up in the air, “dude, my sister? Really?”
“You really need to marry him, mom,” James sighed.

If you don't tell them, at least tell me
Summary
When they are in public, Sam never acts like he and Bucky are together and never mentions that they are a couple. Bucky begins to have doubts...
Or 5 times Sam omits the truth and once he reveals it.
To answer the " are you dating or not" trope :D

"Are you and Bucky... uh... "
Joaquin and Sam were working on the new Redwing updates. Sam, focused, hadn't really paid attention to the question.
"Hm?"
Joaquin a little embarrassed, scratched the back of his head and repeated without looking directly at Sam, "Is that you and Bucky... are you... well you know together or what?"
"And why are you asking me this question now?"
"Oh well… just like that, I was under the impression that..."
Sam replied abruptly, "No. Get back to work."
Joaquin raised his hands as if surrendering.
"Okay... okay... forget it."
A little later, a few miles away, Bucky who was helping Sarah on the boat, felt his cell phone vibrate in his pocket.
He read the message and put the phone away with a dejected look on his face.
"And? What did he answer?"
"Pfff, Joaquin texted me that Sam just said no."
"Bucky, don't make that face, Sam isn't the type to blurt out something like that so easily. It doesn't mean anything."
"Yeah, yeah I know."
But Sarah could tell he didn't look convinced.
~~~~~~~~~~~
"I hate this. If there's one thing I don't like in the whole Captain america thing, it's this."
Sam had just exited the conference room after one hour in the spotlight answering questions from various press representatives.
"You did very well Sam, it's a change from Tony, at least I get to speak up once in a while."
Rhodey patted him on the back to emphasize his words.
"Thanks, because I was honestly so surprised that they asked me that question that I didn't know how to answer."
"Rule of thumb, unless your name is Tony Stark, when reporters ask you personal questions, you answer 'no comment' over and over again."
Rhodey handed him a glass of water, before continuing with a half smile, "By the way, that last question, about you and Bucky… are you... together?"
Sam gave him a scowl before replying, "No comment."
Rhodey chuckled lightly, "Got it."
He knew Sam well enough to know when not to push.
"Well, I have to go Sam. See you soon."
Rhodey shook Sam's hand then headed for the door, as he was about to close it he turned and said, "Tell Bucky I said hi!"
As he closed the door he had just enough time to see Sam's threatening look and laughed.
Rhodey picked up his cell phone and typed,
-He said neither yes nor no, just no comment.
At the same time in Delacroix, Bucky was sharing a beer with Carlos when he received the message from Rhodey. After reading it, he muttered something incomprehensible as he abruptly put his phone down on the table.
"Hey buddy, what's wrong? Is something wrong with you and Sam?" Carlos asked teasingly.
Bucky looked up, a little surprised, "You know about Sam and me?"
Carlos began to laugh out loud.
"Bucky, all of Delacroix knows. You're anything but discreet, I mean... when you're together it shows that it's more than friendship, add to that the hearts in your eyes and the way Sam acts when he's with you, even a blind man could see it."
"That's really funny, really. Hahaha… Then, if everyone knows it why doesn't Sam want to acknowledge it?"
"Did you ask him?"
"No man, he's going to laugh at me if I ask him, I'm sure. So I asked Joaquin and Rhodey. To neither of them did he acknowledge that we were together. I'm starting to wonder if I'm the one who's mistaken about our relationship."
"Bucky, you need to take a step back, and have the courage to ask him. Communication is the key, believe me. I'm sure it's not so serious."
He clinked his bottle with Bucky's who replied without much enthusiasm, "Yeah I'll do that, I'll just have to find the right time."
~~~~~~~~~~
A week later, Sam was returning from his last mission. He was walking along the harbor to meet up with Bucky and Sarah who were working on the boat when he was called out by Carlos.
"Hey Sam, you're back!'"
Sam approached the old worker and greeted him, "Hey Carlos, it's good to be here."
"I believe you, for nothing in the world will I leave this place. Even if I am alone here, Delacroix is my whole life. And here you have your family, Sarah, the kids, Bucky..."
"What Bucky?"
"Well Bucky he is your family right? Since you're-"
"We're what?"
"Well together, like… huh… you know what I mean right?"
"No," Sam replied, "I don't know what you mean."
Then with a half smile, he resumed, "Well I'm going to find MY family" and he winked as he pointed to Sarah and Bucky who were busy on the boat.
"Smartass... but Sam wait please."
Already leaving Sam turned around and asked, "What?"
"Don't play too much with Bucky, he's really starting to worry."
"Don't worry about him Carlos, I know what I'm doing. Bye!"
Sam walked with a quiet smile towards the boat.
~~~~~~~~~~
"Uncle Bucky! Uncle Bucky!"
Cass stormed into the kitchen where Sarah and Sam were quietly drinking coffee.
"Uncle Bucky's not here?"
Sarah replied, "What did I tell you about running into the kitchen, and no Bucky isn't here yet."
"Aww but he said he would come play soccer with us!"
"If he said he'd come, he'll come."
"Okay mom, so if Uncle Bucky comes, you tell him we're already at the field okay?"
Sam who had witnessed the whole exchange intervened, "Uncle Bucky? Since when is it Uncle Bucky?"
Cass rolled his eyes as if his uncle was an idiot for asking such a question.
"Well since you two are together, if he's with you it's only fair that we call him that, right?"
"What do you mean together? We're not-"
He was interrupted by the sound of a ball bouncing.
"Uncle Buckyyy! You're finally here! Come on, everyone's waiting for you!"
Sam turned abruptly, to see that Bucky was standing in the doorway picking up the ball that had just bounced right in front of his feet. Then he quickly got up and turned to leave. As he left he said in a falsely cheerful tone, "Sarah, I'll have them back by 5pm. Does that give you enough time?"
"Great Bucky! Thanks."
Bucky walked away with the children waiting outside the house. It had all happened quickly, but Sam had had time to see the hurt expression on Bucky's face. Hethought for the first time that maybe he had let things go a little too far.
~~~~~~~~~~~
"You should really go talk to him Sam."
Sitting on a bench in front of his sister's house, lost in thought, Sam hadn't heard her coming.
"Don't start, you know who I'm talking about."
Sam sighed, "Yes I know."
"You're playing a dangerous game big brother, and why?"
"Look Sarah, our relationship is our business, what we are is our business, and it's him I need to discuss it with, not outsiders. Actually, we haven't really talked about our relationship yet."
"Then do it! It's easy for you. Bucky wears his heart on his sleeve. So maybe you don't need to feel reassured. But some people need to hear the words. And maybe that's the case with Bucky. He just needs to hear it from you, if he knows where he stands then it won't matter to him if others know or not."
Sam stayed there for another long moment thinking about what Sarah had just told him.
Finally he stood up, he knew what he had to do.
~~~~~~~~~~
"And then your Uncle Sam he just said, 'on your left' and flew over the battlefield, you should have seen, he was so amazing. And then we all went in through the portals that Doctor Strange had created."
"Wow, and then tell about when Steve gave Sam the shield, please Uncle Bucky!"
Bucky and the kids couldn't see him and Sam paused for a bit, enjoying the scene before his eyes.
Bucky, lying in the grass surrounded by his nephews and the neighborhood kids, some lying against him, one sitting on top of him and another clinging to his arm that Bucky was gently lifting. They were all hanging onto Bucky's every word.
"So you see, the Hulk, well Professor Hulk, rigged the time machine so that Steve could bring the stones back to where they belong. What Sam didn't know was that Steve had no intention of coming back directly. And so when he reappeared he looked like an old man. Then he gave the shield to Sam."
"Wow!" Cass exclaimed, "So he gave his super shield to Uncle so easily? But you didn't want it?"
Bucky laughed slightly, "Oh no, I'm a follower, not a leader. I couldn't have picked a better person to carry the shield. That Captain America, kids, I'll follow him into the flames. AJ and Cass, you can be proud of your uncle."
Sam gasped at the loyalty and pride that resonated in Bucky's words.
"Yeah, but you have your great arm too!"
"That's right!" he lifted his arm higher and the boy hanging on it laughed out loud followed by the other kids.
Sam stepped forward, Cass and AJ saw him, stood up and ran to him, "Uncle Sam!"
"So you're the ones who kidnapped my boyfriend?"
Bucky straightened up, looked into Sam's eyes for two seconds and Sam saw the smile move from his eyes to his mouth. He thought to himself that he had made the right decision.
"Your boyfriend?" Cass planted himself in front of Sam with his hands on his hips and continued, "Haha, see I was right to call him Uncle Bucky."
Sam laughed and replied, "Yes, yes, you were absolutely right. So can I have Uncle Bucky back now?"
Bucky jumped to his feet and approached, "And what do you want to do with Uncle Bucky?" he asked with a mischievous gleam in the eyes.
Sam looked more serious, "I want to talk to him" he held out his hand, "Will you come with me?"
Bucky took the outstretched hand and followed him, all the while waving his other hand at the kids.
"Hi kids! See you soon! Practice hard for next time."
Sam and Bucky walked away hand in hand to the laughter and shouts of the kids.
They walked in silence for a moment and then Sam spoke up.
"Bucky, I'm sorry. I wasn't ready to answer the questions about us. And without meaning to, I hurt your feelings. Sarah made it clear that I was wrong. Things are so natural between us that I don't question it. But when Joaquin and Rhodey asked me about it, I realized that we hadn't even taken the time to talk about our relationship. That's why I preferred to deny it rather than-"
"Sam, about Joaquin and Rhodey, I was the one who told them to ask you, because I realized that when we were in the presence of other people, you never talked about us, or you were much more distant and I wondered if you... uh I realize that it's silly, since I live with you and that… and…  anyway I wondered if you saw our relationship in the long term and I started to doubt. So I reacted stupidly but I-"
Sam put a finger to his mouth, "Bucky, even though going through joaquin and Rhodey was really silly, if we had taken the time, if I had taken the time to talk to you, you wouldn't have felt the need to do something like that. I think we both need to learn to talk. Bucky, when I said I love you, it wasn't just words, I am totally committed to this relationship and it is very important to me. You are very important to me."
Sam stopped walking, let go of Bucky's hand, framed his face and kissed him gently on the forehead, then on the lips.
"Sam, we're in the middle of the street, everyone can see us!"
"So what? Who will stop me from making out with my boyfriend? Those who don't want to see, let them look away."
Just for the expression his words elicited on Bucky's face, Sam would repeat those words over and over again.
"But Bucky," Sam whispered against his lips, "You need to talk to me too. If you have any doubts, talk to me. We've always said things to each other's faces, even at the risk of hurting each other's feelings sometimes, we need to keep going."
He saw Bucky bite his lip as if he was hesitant to speak.  Sam moved back a little and said, "Bucky talk to me."
"I know I'm not the best fit, I have a lot of work to do on myself. But Sam I don't want to be the weak one in this relationship, the one who is always being cajoled. I need to know that you see me as an equal, someone you can lean on, someone you can confide in. So the fact that you don't talk about us, I thought maybe you couldn't do all that with me."
Sam gave him a gentle smack on the back of Bucky's head.
"Idiot. I never considered you weak Bucky. Never. It's you I turn to and will turn to first when I have or will need it. Bucky, you are the one I entrust my family to when I go on a mission. I know they have someone to rely on when I'm not around. It's one of my strengths Bucky. Believe me. Knowing that no matter what I go through, you and my family, no actually I mean my family, including you, will be there to take me in, and bear whatever I can't bear anymore, that's my-hmpf"
Sam's words were muffled by Bucky who had thrown his arms around him and was kissing him passionately, not caring anymore that they were making out in the middle of the street.
Lost in their embrace, now that they had told each other almost everything, they forgot all that was not them.
Much later when they caught their breath, Sam murmured with a slight laugh, "That's a good way to communicate too."
Bucky replied with a big laugh as he pulled Sam by the hand, "Come on Mister boyfriend, let's go home, I know another way to communicate where we are both good." He accompanied his words with a suggestive raised eyebrow which earned him a second smack on the head as Sam grumbled with eyes raised to the sky, "My boyfriend is an idiot."
"Yep but he's YOUR boyfriend."
Estrellas ⊶ Joaquín Torres x GN!Reader
Request: no, but Joaquin really stole my heart
Warnings: um...it’s frikin’ romantic because i was listening to a song (yes, in Spanish, hence the title) & it made me think of this, the gender-neutral term for mister/misses, rough translations because my Spanish to English translation is booty cheeks :)
TRANSLATION: STARS
yes, I know, I speak Spanish & I know there are other readers who speak it & understand it, BUT my writing has always been inclusive as I never want to exclude people as I was excluded from x readers for most of my life being a curly-headed & having a medium skin tone. anyways, hope you enjoy :D
Being madly in love was something he never thought would happen, yet you appeared and proved him wrong. Was he upset? Definitely not. If anything, he was happy. He was so happy that he couldn’t describe it in words. The most he could do is think of how he can repay you for showing him what love was. No, not the typical little romance BS in movies, but actual love. His heart raced in your presence, he couldn’t stop looking at you in pure admiration every time you spoke on anything.
Here he was now, dazing off in a middle of a conversation with Sam which didn’t surprise him at all. “I know that look. You’re crazy about them aren’t you?” Joaquin got out of his trance before chuckling at his friends' comment. “It’s okay Torres. You can be crazy about someone when you’re already together. It looks good on you though. However, can I call you a simp now or no?” Joaquin gave Sam a playful squint before laughing. He just couldn’t wait to get home to you because if anything, he was willing to prove to you just how much he loves you. So that night when he went home to you, you weren't expecting him to play a song that was in Spanish.
"Love, you know I'm not fluent." He chuckles. "I know, but you only have to understand a small portion of this song." You tilt your head to the side and he gives you the smile that still makes your heart go insane. When the chorus of the song kicked in, you waited for Joaquin to give you a sign of some sort, but he waited. "This sounds like a love song." He wrapped his arms around your waist and nodded. "Because it is." You felt your cheeks warm up at his confirmation and decided to patiently wait for him. Looking into his deep brown eyes, you saw the small shimmer they had every time he looked at you.
Once the song came to an end, he sighed. "How can I repay you for loving me so much?" You raised an eyebrow in confusion at his words. What was that supposed to mean? "I'm sorry, I would love to bring down the stars to gift them to you so your nights can shine as well as your sunrises." You looked down, but he rested his fingers on your chin ever so lightly and lifted it up. "I'm sorry, I don't know if my life will end to always be the warmth to warm your cold hands and always take care of your smile." You were taken aback by his words. "My darling lover, are these vows?" He shook his head. "No, but they are true. I translated the chorus as best as I could because of how real the song is and about my feelings for you."
"We already said the L word though." He nods and kisses your knuckles. "I know tesoro (treasure), but this is something different." You simply look at your boyfriend as he leans into your ear. "Check the pocket from your jacket." You went over and reached into both pockets. He actually giggled at how fast you dug into them with both hands. In your left pocket, you pulled out a small emerald-colored box. "Jay, what's this?" He smiled with a tear escaping his eye as you opened the box. A simple ring was nice and snug in the box and you gasped. "Mi amor (my love), will you become my Mx Torres?"
south side princess (part 3)
Fp had spent the morning in the prison to see y/n father. The guilt of kissing y/n weighed on his mind as he sat waiting for his friend to be walked out. They both picked up the phones simultaneously, the talk between the two gang members was about the job that had gone wrong “I’ll get it sorted, Sam brought the money back it’s just the drugs we lost” fp tells y/f/n. Once fp had come up with a plan to try and resupply the lost drugs quickly then the topic came round to y/n. “how’s my angel doing” he asked fp, “she’s good feisty” he laughed “ she always was, is she okay in that trailer?” y/f/n looked sad this time you’d moved from a large lovely house to a trailer. “she’s at school, cheerleader practice or pops with Jughead.
When she’s at the trailer park she’s with us at the bar or in mine to be honest ” your dad nodded thanking his boss. Fp watched as questions filled your dad’s head picking the ones he wanted to ask, “and the serpents she’s not getting grief from them?” this made fp laugh. “no she can handle herself with them, she nearly broke Jack’s wrist night one.” fp told your father how you defended yourself showing the gang members your not to be messed with. “look promise me she’ll be okay with you Jones” Your father begged fp to watch out for you protect you like you was his own. Fp felt worse about his heated moment with you.
Every time your name came up he pictured you up against the wall with his hands and lips all over you the sounds you made, and how much he wanted to do it again. it was getting harder for him to look your dad in the eye. After he’d finished with his visit he drove back thinking mixed things the hard one, he had to shut down anything with y/n she needed a Guardian not a lover. His own selfish needs had to be stopped.
He didn’t realize the time when y/n walked in, it felt like he’d only had five minutes to think. when he saw her She was smiling, brushed her hair back behind her ear shyly when she looked at him. Fp stood trying not to think about how y/n was his arms humming as his lips trailed her jawline. A cough from Joaquin snapped him back.
Something was off when you entered Fp’s you could feel the tension as you walked in fp Joaquin and other boy you had never seen before all stirred at you. Fp was different “hi y/n” he standing up offering the seat for you to sit. Every morning he’d great you with a smile, a hug and a hello Princess but today he called you by your name. You sat feeling nervous watched as he struggles to look you in the eye. “your dad’s been arrested” he said. You looked at the others, “what happened?” you ask. The next hour the new boy Sam (now you found out his name) told you how the police had raided the motel they had been staying in. Your dad stayed so Sam and other serpent could run. The other boy tried to hide but was found taken with your dad.
The whole time Fp didn’t speak instead he opened the duffel bag on the table. The was thousands of dollars in the bag more than you cared to Hazard a guess at. Fp sorted the money into smaller bundles each with easy $2000 in. He gave Sam a large amount telling him to go and lay low. He also nodded for Joaquin to go as well. You start to blush being alone with him. He come back with half a smile “look I promise to fix this or sort something out” he said keeping his distance. “should I go back to my mom’s?” you ask. “do you want to go back?” He said. You shook you head no but felt you had no choice. Fp took two of the piles handing you one “put that in your bag it was for your dad but it’s yours now” he held the other “rent for the trailer I’ll sort it if you don’t want to leave but now you need to go to practice/ the game or whatever your doing today I’ll see you later when I’ve sorted out the serpents” you walked over and hugged him, stood on your tip toes leaning in to kiss him but he moved his head. You looked at him confused.
He didn’t act like this a few hours ago you lift your hand to touch his face bringing him to face you, he closed his eyes welcoming the contact but quickly changed his mind taking your hand away. “I can’t do this” he says “last night I shouldn’t of let it happen or get so far” you looked hurt “what’s changed your mind?” you ask now looking at the floor. “your only 19 for fuck sake y/n I shouldn’t have kissed you like that” you Finally look at him “age is a number” you try to argue back. fp sighed regretting what he was about to say, “it is y/n but I don’t like you like that what would I want with a kid I’m meant to be looking after you. it was a drunk mistake you was just a drunken mistake” the anger was dominant on your face. “look I didn’t mean it to sound that nasty but it’s true I promised to care for you and kissing you wanting to sleep with you isn’t that” he goes to touch your shoulder but you step back still possessing what he’s just said. you didn’t answer you couldn’t, so you walked out. Once outside you felt the tears rolling down your face in a fit of silent sobs you feel your stomach twist into a sickly feeling, your chest was tight and sore as your tried to calm yourself. you was only a mistake his words rang out loud in your mind. Wiping your face you head to practice.
At school your mind was elsewhere, your dads arrest and the way fp had treated you being the only things on your mind. During practice you had missed steps and made wrong turns really not in the mood to dance. “y/n” Cheryl snapped “what the hell is wrong with you can’t you follow a simple routine, oh wait your living the simple life down in South side” you growled as B&V hold you back “I might live on the south side but at least my family don’t sleep with or kill each other” you regretted saying it as soon as it came out your mouth but before you could apologise Cheryl ran at you. She swung her arm to smack you but instead you caught her wrist and head butted her in the nose. Ronnie and Betty dragged you out with Cheryl screaming your off the team and how you will pay for what. As soon as you got outside you ran leaving Betty and Veronica confused.
Fp got a call from his son jughead telling him about you had been in a terrible mood and how you’d broken Cheryl’s nose he groaned thinking it was partly his fault for your mood. Fp knew y/n had problems with her anger and breaking Cheryl’s nose was a result of you building your anger, hate, pain until you snapped. Fp told jug he would see if your okay and try to sort it out. he put the phone down headed for your trailer. Inside it was empty you hadn’t come back since you’d felt that afternoon. He had gone to your door about 10 times called you over 100. Each time you saw his name you couldn’t bring yourself to answer. So you went to the one place you thought no one would find you but you where wrong.
Jughead was the one to find you in an old play park, taking you to pops then the drive-in he watched as you paid for both your meals and multiple milkshakes. He worried about where you’d gotten the large some of money from but like most things with you, jug knew not to push you in the matter. It was after 1am when you got home finding fp sitting on your doorstep his head in his hands. “where have you been?” He asked in his most neutral tone. “with Jughead” he was taken back by your sourness. “I heard about what happened with the blossom girl, I know your pissed off with me and your dad but you can’t take that out in the girls at school y/n” he said making you more angry he hadn’t come to say sorry for the things he’d said earlier but wanted to have a go over you fighting. “yes I’m sorry, but I’m too tried to talk to you now so goodnight Jones” you say trying to sound as bitchy as you could, before shutting your door sliding down it crying letting all the pent up emotion out. That night you got into bed the complete opposite then the night before in 24hrs you’d gone from the happiest girl on the planet to a crying heartbroken mess.
Fp sunk his hands in his pocket didn’t mean to hurt you but couldn’t be with you the way he wanted either. It was killing him to be like this with you and to for you to hate him but thought it was for the best. The next few days you and fp was cold with each other. You hardly spoke to one another, you’d spend more and more at pops or the drive in, when you did go the Wyrm you’d sit with Jack and Sam. Fp felt hurt by your change in attitude, but was glad of the wedge you now had it made it easier for him not to love you. when you’d spend time at the drive in he’d see you with his son when he was working well dealing down there, it was his secret way of keeping an eye on you. One Friday and the was a few people at the drive in, fp had worked it with Jack and Joaquin. He’d met up with Hermione Lodge to do some business her husband arranged. As she left he saw her daughter following her, then heard a sound that always made his heart jump and a smile on his face, the sound of y/n laughing.
He walked round the corner hidden from her sight, his heart broke when he saw y/n and his son cuddled up on the back of a truck bed wrapped in blankets. He noticed your head was jugs chest his arms around you. He could feel himself get jealous looking at her with someone that wasn’t him also felt sad he’d pushed you away. When he see jug kiss the top of your head, y/n smiled when he did. fp walked away feeling jealous of his son, angry with himself and most of all hurt . He turned putting all his frustrations into a single blow to the nearest wall, shaking his hand with the pain before going back to jack. For the rest of the night he was difficult to work with both Jack and Joaquin had both took the brunt of their bosses anger and frustrations. Nothing they did was right and fp made sure they knew.
You and jug had sat watching the film. You enjoyed spending time with him and needed it. Jughead could make you see things in a different way. “so who’s got you so upset” he asked. You fake smile “no one, why” you lied but jug knew you better. “don’t lie to me y/n, last week you was happy, jolly and loved the world. This week your fighting, moody and spending free time with me at pops or here who’s upset you?” you didn’t know how to tell jug it’s his dad that made you so happy and upset. “is it one of them serpent gang members?” jug added you smile “can’t get nothing past you Juggie, yeah just some guy wanted me one day didn’t the next” you tell him hoping he won’t ask any more. “you shouldn’t worry about it y/n if he’s acting an arse then don’t chase him it’s his loss serpents ain’t worth a second look” you cuddled into him more laughing as he kissed your head. You smiled thinking about what he’d say if he knew it was fp you was thinking of. But he was right you should  stop running after fp. You didn’t go home after you saw Jack working knowing fp wasn’t far, you asked jug could you stay with him. Jughead saw you looking at Jack nervous he thought he was the serpent you’d liked but didn’t say nothing just agreed to let you stay. Jugheads room was small it had a bed in and a few of his things, on the shelf you see two pictures one of jug and his sister jellybean and the other was of jug jellybean, their mom then you saw fp looking handsome with that smile you loved. you bite your lip looking at him turning the photo face down so you didn’t have to look at it. Jug put a film on as you both get comfortable watching y/f/m.
