Jocelyn (Josie) Shepard
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Josie is a badass and sensitive woman from the wonderful mind of @ladynyxeris.
Backstory - Earthborn (Chicago).
Background - Sole Survivor.
Class - Adept, though she can biotically kick and punch like a Vanguard if needed.
Alignment - 70% Paragon, 30% Renegade.
Lover(s) - Garrus.
Best Friend(s) - Also Garrus, though she’s also close with Tali, Wrex and Joker.
Some would say Josie’s worst enemy is Cerberus, but really it’s her own fear of not being good enough.
Josie was born in Chicago into a broken family. Her mother was a red sand user who never really got clean, not even when she was pregnant, so little Josie came into the world already addicted. It was a miracle she even survived birth. Josie's father instead walked out on her when she was too young to remember his face.
At 12 Jocelyn would lose her remaining parent to a red sand overdose, so she was sent to an orphanage run by nuns, but she soon ran away since the living conditions there weren't much better than her family home. Young Josie was a scrawny little thing and didn't think she could be anything different than a mouse surviving on scraps, always keeping her head down, always biting her tongue to survive. Now alone and without a place to go, she fell easy prey to the Tenth Street Reds, who mostly employed her as a working girl and a finesser to spy on rival gangs.
Jocelyn didn't know she was a biotic until her abilities awakened. It was a classic case of 'wrong place at the wrong time'. A local politician's son was trying to buy a huge amount of drugs from a gang member. After the deal Josie tried to sneak away without getting seen, but she accidentally knocked over a glass. The man was instantly on top of her, hellbent on getting rid of the only witness, but adrenaline and survival instincts did the rest. Jocelyn warped his head into a bloody pulp, and by her 16th birthday she was arrested for aggravated murder.
Anderson found Josie rotting in jail. Even if she was a minor during those events, money talks and it was unlikely she'd have gotten out anytime soon without his intervention. He got her a good lawyer, and after her release she got into an Alliance training program. At 18 she officially enlisted, trying to give back some of what Anderson gave her.
She had thought that would be a new chapter in her life, but then the Akuze tragedy happened, leaving her with physical and emotional scars.
Due to her being used and thrown away time and time again, Jocelyn is profoundly affection starved but afraid to pursue meaningful relationships at the same time. That's how she ended up in Garrus' arms. It was supposed to be just a casual thing, but she fell hard and fast for him, a sentiment reciprocated by the turian. And with the threat of the Reapers looming at the horizon, Garrus becomes Josie's main reason to fight.

book review | Meet Cute: Some People Are Destined to Meet
Authors: Jennifer L. Armentrout, Dhonielle Clayton, Katie Cotugno, Joeclyn Davies, Huntley Fitzpatrick, Nina LaCour, Emery Lord, Katharine McGee, Kass Morgan, Julie Murphy, Meredith Russo, Sara Shepard, Nicola Yoon, Ibi Zoboi
Cover Art: Nina Cosford, Mallory Grigg
Genre: Anthology, YA, Romance
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Whether or not you believe in fate, or luck, or love at first sight, every romance has to start somewhere. MEET CUTE is an anthology of original short stories featuring tales of "how they first met" from some of today’s most popular YA authors. Readers will experience Nina LaCour's beautifully written piece about two Bay Area girls meeting via a cranky customer service Tweet, Sara Shepard's glossy tale about a magazine intern and a young rock star, Nicola Yoon's imaginative take on break-ups and make-ups, Katie Cotugno's story of two teens hiding out from the police at a house party, and Huntley Fitzpatrick's charming love story that begins over iced teas at a diner. There’s futuristic flirting from Kass Morgan and Katharine McGee, a riveting transgender heroine from Meredith Russo, a subway missed connection moment from Jocelyn Davies, and a girl determined to get out of her small town from Ibi Zoboi. Jennifer Armentrout writes a sweet story about finding love from a missing library book, Emery Lord has a heartwarming and funny tale of two girls stuck in an airport, Dhonielle Clayton takes a thoughtful, speculate approach to pre-destined love, and Julie Murphy dreams up a fun twist on reality dating show contestants. This incredibly talented group of authors brings us a collection of stories that are at turns romantic and witty, epic and everyday, heartbreaking and real.
Overall a really fun anthology that renewed my belief in love and serendipity. All of the stories are either m/f or f/f, there are some that involve fantasy elements, and some that take place in the future/alternate reality. A good read for anyone looking to take a break from full length YA novels or wanting something new. Individual story reviews below!

If you are one of those folks, then you should be please to learn be pleased to learn that abundantly talented Cleveland-based musician recently released a new album titled Five Minutes for Earth, a splendidly informative and entertaining trailer for which can be seen at her website: https://www.yolandaharp.com. As it turns out, Ms. Kondonassis is also committed to a cause and is using music as a means of communicating her concern. Meet Cute: Some People Are Destined to Meet (Anthology)
Tumblr media
Read time: 10 Day Rating: 4/5
Contains stories by Katie Cotuguo, Nina LaCour, Ibi Zoboi, Katherine McGee, Sara Shepard, Meredith Russo, Dhonielle Clayton, Emery Lord, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Jocelyn Davies, Kass Morgan, Julie Murphy, Huntley Fitzpatrick and Nicola Yoon
Overall Thoughts So I will start by saying I enjoyed this collection. There is a bit of something for everyone the couples are M/M, M/F and F/F, one of the main characters is trans. There are different time settings, different writing styles and the meet-cutes appear at different points in the stories. IOn the writing styles I think it is important to know that they run the gambit of perspectives (1st, 2nd and 3rd). The stories are charmingly brief (20-25 page each) making it a great palette cleanser or pick up put down book. Now here's the but. Meet Cute really needed an introduction. Either whoever at Alloy collated it or whoever bought the authors together. Due to the diversity within the stories, I was wondering what the brief was. Even just a definition of a meet-cute would have been better than nothing. One other issue I had was that all the meet-cutes were implicitly or explicitly coded as romantic. I would have really liked one that was just a friendship or someone to tackle an ace protagonist. Standout stories: Click, Oomph, Say Everything.
Siege Etiquette by Katie Cotuguo This is a Queen Bee (Hailey) and Farm Boy (Wolf) hiding kinda from the cops in a bathroom. They have shared pasts, misunderstandings abound and there is a definite attraction. It's written in 1st person for only one person (Hailey's) something I don't read a lot but it works. It's an interesting premise well-executed in less than twenty pages. I can see where it could go if it was longer but it works really well at this length.
Print Shop by Nina LaCour It's Evie's first day at a new job, it's not what she expected but she is trying to make the best of it. One of the jobs given to her is setting up social media for the print shop. Lauren is a disgruntled customer. Evie identifies as queer and she has one of the most adorable coming out stories, it was essentially an accident. Nina LaCour has an engaging style. Her story is a meeting of worlds, a meeting of times. It's the perfect length and frames itself well.
Hourglass by Ibi Zoboi Hourglass focuses on Cherish, an African American girl living in a town where there are only 4 other African American families. It is set at the end of her senior year, right before prom. Hourglass is less about the meet-cute and more about female friendship and the end of an era. That is not to say the meet-cute isn't sweet, it is and it challenges some norms and expectations. I was sort of disappointed with Hourglass. I like Cherish. I wanted to know more, I wanted to see what choices she made. Or at a bare minimum, I want to see her rock that dress.
Click by Katherine McGee Click is fantastic. Unlike some of the other stories, it feels entirely self-contained and uses an alternating perspective. The main characters are the hurting and technologically inclined Alexa and the creative Raden, those alignments alone deserve applause. I feel like there is some inspiration taken from not only real-world dating apps but Scythe. It just made me happy. It's a hopeful story with endearing characters.
The Intern by Sara Shepard The main characters are slightly eccentric rock star Phineas and Clara the daughter of a celebrity and not what her father expects. Clara is involuntarily interning at her father's record label for the summer. Phineas and Clara meet as part of her role at V. It's a simple story about how two young people spend a day finding out each other in New York. Honestly, I got The Sun Is Also A Star vibes. It's not bad, it just feels a bit unoriginal and there aren't enough details given for me to really enjoy it.
Somewhere That's Green by Meredith Russo Somewhere That's Green is an opposite attract story. Nia is a young trans woman struggling with having her community acknowledge her identity. Lexie is a Christian girl at her school who appears to be leading the charge to have her use the male facilities rather than the female ones. While I appreciate Nia and Lexie I have issues with Meredith Russo's writing. Meredith Russo is a trans woman with that in mind her writing feels overly cliche and perhaps wasteful. It is a very personal opinion. The story isn't bad, I enjoyed it, I just wish there was something more real about it.
The Way We Love Here by Dhonielle Clayton This is a reasonably clever play on the red string of fate but also uses time travel elements. It's another wonderful, hopeful story with unexpected protagonists. The artistic, driven Viola and the creative but sick Sebastian. Its focus is the possibilities and alternatives life can offer. I would like to know where Dhonielle Clayton drew their inspiration from the setting is on an isolated island which you cannot leave, it all feels very mythological both using eastern and western elements. I really enjoyed it.
Oomph by Emery Lord Oomph is super sweet and the perfect amount of nerdy. The main ladies use Natasha Romanov and Peggy Carter as nicknames, well actually names. They are in an airport waiting for flights. It's very cliche but it's a cliche for a reason. It's just so good. The smores are brilliant. I loved the writing, it's funny and cute.
The Dictionary of You and Me by Jennifer L. Armentrout I'm nopeing all the way out of this one. I have issues. I'm a librarian and this is all kinds of bad and just annoying stereotypes that push my buttons. Basically, I know too much and I can't turn my brain off. It is kind of cute but it is also kind of creepy. Essentially she is a librarian and he is a patron with an overdue dictionary. When she rings him to try and get the book back they flirt. I just can't not see how wrong it is.
The Unlikely Likelihood of Falling in Love by Jocelyn Davies This is another one with perhaps reverse archetypes. She is a math nerd, he is a musician. The plot revolves around her mathematical inclination and a final assessment. Their meet-cute really is adorable and the thing of daydreams, eyes meeting through train carriage windows. Sam urns it into an exercise in probabilities which is adorable. I do like Sam, the plot and the ending. The writing is well suited to the character which is in and of itself isn't easy.
259 Million Miles by Kass Morgan 259 Million Miles focused on missed opportunities with a side of social conscious. The main characters, Philip and Blythe, are likeable and human. It is truly standalone and doesn't ask for more. The ending brings out mixed emotions as one wants from a story dealing with humanity. But it was nice to have a story that was basically a locked room, a true two people put together with only one thing in common. Though in the battle of the futuristic meet-cutes, it loses to Click... easily.
Something Real by Julie Murphy This is the only review I'm spoiler warning so see my Goodreads for this bit.
Say Everything by Huntley Fitzpatrick This is such a well written and unexpected story. But I don't know if it is a meet-cute, there is too much history there. Emma is a fantastic character, I appreciate her resilience and forthrightness. Sean is well, Sean is something. But Emma is an unreliable narrator. The story is written in 2nd person, the only one in the book written as such. Like the book of quotes idea popularised by A Walk to Remember The Book of Lost Opportunites sounds like a brilliant idea. It is such a strong story though, at least to me.
The Department of Dead Love by Nicola Yoon This is the perfect last story, the perfect last line. It is a visually stunning story that plays on some unexpectedly heavy ideas. While I was torn on the three central characters I loved the writing and world. Nicola Yoon has a way with words that evokes emotion.

How about 12, 13, and 14? Please and thank you :D
12. Brainiest VS Brawniest. These are both going to be DA characters: Maeve Surana, tiny elven mage, is the most cerebral and intellectual. I’m giving Simon Trevelyan the nod for brawniest, since he’s a six-foot warrior, although Coran Aeducan would also be a contender.
13. Most forgiving VS Most grudgeful. Most forgiving: Aderyn Hawke is tremendously kind and forgiving almost to a fault. Most grudgeful: Coran Aeducan never forgets a slight.
14. Physical vices (drugs, sex, alcohol) VS Spiritual vices (Lust, wrath, envy). Yikes! This one is tough. Um, Jocelyn Hawke definitely drinks too much, so I’ll name her for physical vices. Spiritual vices, I’ll hand to Alex Shepard and all his not-entirely-repressed anger.

system question! what are some relationships going on in system and with your partner system? (whenever it be familial, platonic or romantic)
hi this is noct 🎣
shepard and i are pretty much friends now! and stella and 🎠 are like little baby besties.
yozora doesnt get along well with me or riku, im pretty sure hes a protector type role for my partner’s system, not my own. so he has some beef with us (because we often upset prom/etc even if its not on purpose)
hiccup and i are working on it. i dont know if he would consider us friends yet but i guess im hesitant too. but id love to be his friend and work on making things up to him
and of course the alices are friends. recently fran has been providing company at times but shes not like. fully there. a fragment?
cloud seems to have an inner system of his own . or maybe theyre hallucinations? im not sure. but he shares a headspace (?) with zack (is he dead or is he not. the world will never know) and aerith.
anyways! on to fiance relationships. obv me and prom are engaged!!!
shepard and jocelyn are like. dating? talking? not sure. shepard isnt even sure lol
and jack and hiccup are dating. i dont know if i should say engaged bc they technically havent proposed to each other as he wasnt here when i did and came back much after.
silas and nathan are friends i think! at least silas considers them friends
and stella and little prom are bffs of course
🎠 sees my fiance as a caregiver/protector of sorts. a safe grown up.
and the alices have hatter now! even liddell finds him pleasant.
thats all i can think of rn. not everyone has a “partner” in my fiances system, but most of them are ok with that. those people tend to either keep me company internally or operate in public/when were not with prom.
thanks for the ask!

2022 TBR Buster Challenge
I am participating in the 2022 TBR Buster Challenge by @bookbandit! I have selected 8 titles which have been on my shelves for over a year.
1. The Thousandth Floor (1), Katharine McGee
2. The Dazzling Heights (2), Katharine McGee
3. The Towering Sky (3), Katharine McGee
I severely disliked American Royals by Katharine McGee. I have no plans to read the rest of the American Royals trilogy which is, as far as I am concerned, a royal waste of time (pun intended). However, The Thousandth Floor trilogy has been on my shelves for years, so I feel obligated to read it (or at least try to).
4. Renegades (1), Marisa Meyer
5. Archenemies (2), Marisa Meyer
6. Supernova (3), Marisa Meyer
I liked the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer as well as Heartless. Gilded, their newest release, is on my TBR, so I feel that it is time to finally read the Renegades trilogy!
7. Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas
I loved both The Hate U Give and On the Come Up by Angie Thomas, so I am excited to read Concrete Rose, their newest release!
8. Meet Cute by Nina LaCour, Sara Shepard, Nicola Yoon, Katie Cotugno, Huntley Fitzpatrick, Kass Morgan, Katharine McGee, Meredith Russo, Jocelyn Davies, Ibi Zoboi, Jennifer Armentrout, Emery Lord, Dhonielle Clayton, and Julie Murphy
I read Blackout, a collection of short stories featuring black romances by Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, Nicola Yoon, last year, so I am curious to read another collection of short stories featuring “meet cute” romances.
