#joco interview

This is a link to an interview of my friend Joe Collins by Dizzy Tortoise. It's worth a listen because it provides real insights into JoCo's creative processes. While tuning in, I had an epiphany concerning my own.
I started to write "Long, Strange Trip" a year ago but have made little progress. And that's despite help from John Steiner, encouragement from Ana Maria Romero, and inspiration from James McFarland. Why is that? Each previous book that I wrote and published would take 3-4 months from first keystroke to final upload to the publishing houses. Joe provided the answer: Fear.
I'm not afraid of public reaction, but rather fearful of going public with very personal feelings and events. I'm afraid of being judged for sounding crazy, delusional, and/or irrational. What I endured in Fort Wayne really was psychotic. But I am not. I have to untangle the two in my own mind first.
Thanks to Joe and Dizzy Tortoise for this impetus.

Part 2
An ordinary day
One day when a third party meeting was held
Ren: "Don't let other people interfere with me!!"
Silva: "Ah, hey!"
Ren: "Tch...! This is annoying!"
Silva: "Are you getting along with your friends, Ren?"
Ren: "... What do you mean"
Silva: "Ah no, I have no intention on prying into the deep meaning. I just..."
Ren: "It's none of your business!"
Ren: "I don't deserve to be pointed out on how to interact with others!"
Ren: "...I can't help but get angry, I do what I want!"
Ren: "Dammit...! I'm getting the hell out of here"
Yoh: "Oh, your interview's already over Ren?"
Ren: "..You haven't gone home yet"
Yoh: "We were all just talking about getting together at the burger store"
Yoh: "Are you coming too?"
Ren: "I'm not, go on your own"
Yoh: "Hmn...? You're angry aren't you?
Ren: "I'M NOT ANGRY!!!"
Yoh: "No, you're angry..."
Ren: "Leave me alone! I said I'm leaving!"
Yoh: "What are you so angry about... Ahh, I see. So that's what this is about!"
Yoh: "You must be hungry, Ren"
Ren: "............ What are you talking about?"
Yoh: "I know that feeling, it's hard to relax when you're hungry"
Yoh: "Well then, let's hurry up and go!"
Ren: "Oi! Don't pull, you idiot!"
And then Ren half heartedly heads for the burger store
Tumblr media
Lyserg: "He even asked me about my break time"
Joco: "I'm just saying, leave me alone"
Yoh: "I don't remember recess because I was asleep"
Yoh: "I wonder if Horohoro is still around?"
Joco: "The interview sure is taking forever"
Ren: "I'm guessing they're giving him a warning about his classroom attitude"
Yoh: "Hehehe my ears are hurting"
Ren: 'Lax conversations amongst lax people... It's unbearable to listen to...'
Ren: 'I can't stand it...'
Horohoro: "What's up! I'll be taking your potatoes Ren!"
Ren: "Don't take other people's things without permission you bastard!"
Horohoro: "It's okay this much is fine"
Yoh: "You're late, Horohoro"
Horohoro: "Well the story was so long I almost feel asleep in the middle of it"
Yoh: "Ah, come to think of it, I fell asleep in class today"
Yoh: "Can you lend me your notebook Ren?"
Ren: "NO!!!"
Horohoro: "That's what I'm talking about! After school with my friends is the best!"
Ren: "............Hmph"
After that the five of them continued to talk about trivial things

The churn of Killing Eve's head writers every season compelled Jodie Comer to take some advice from Sandra Oh on asserting herself beyond just being an actor.
Tumblr media
NPR: Originally developed by "Fleabag" creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge from a series of novels, "Killing Eve" has featured a different female showrunner every season, including Oscar winner Emerald Fennell. Comer says that arrangement requires the actors to speak up so their characters stay consistent. That's something she learned from co-star Sandra Oh, an alum of "Grey's Anatomy," who taught her how to contribute beyond just acting.
COMER: I think her attention to detail has really inspired me. Prior to "Killing Eve," I just always considered acting as, like, you know, you learn your lines. You go to set. You do your job. You go home. And - but there is so much more that you can give. So I think through Sandra and through the production, that's really helped me find my own voice.

My Experience
As this semester comes to an end there are many things to reflect on as a team.  We were able to accomplish some remarkable things such as establishing a partnership with the public school system for joco angels. There were many other projects that joco angels will be working on but I would like to think that we set the standard for future Campbell public health students.  It was really great to be able to help raise awareness about a public health issue such as substance abuse. We were able to network with many other organizations who had different approaches but the same goal. One of the proudest moments is when we got a chance to interact with the students and saw how much we were making a difference. Even though covid was an obstacle, we made it work and did the best that we could. I believe that middle school students learned a lot and it is my hope that future Campbell students can design more activities. I believe it is important to use the skills we learned in the classroom and use them out in the community.  I hope that we inspired young people to take a stand against substance abuse.
Interacting with the various organizations have been amazing in every way. We were grateful to help out with 12 stone recovery that doesn’t just dela with substance abuse, but they include mental health components that affect the overall health such as codependency. I’ve had so much fun meeting people in my community and explaining my goals for the future. It has been a great thing to also hear some of the stories and the struggles they have faced. Testimonies gave us an insight on the obstacles that they faced while battling addiction. I’ve learned that battling addiction also affects the family and community. They launched teen night which I had the opportunity to mentor to the teens along with some other groups members. I was extremely nervous, but they made me feel comfortable in the process and I used some faith-based techniques to drive my points home. This experience allowed me to learn so much from residents in the community that I could not have learned in the classroom.  I think it was very important that I was able to learn something as well as teach a few things. this was an opportunity that I’m glad I had through joco angels.
The connections I’ve made with some of the leaders have been so great. There are still a few events that I plan to volunteer my time for just because I’ve enjoyed it so much. I plan on helping the groups with opioid awareness events that will inform the community. I’ve offered to write articles on various topics for community outreach. Building a relationship with these leaders have meant so much to me. I’ve had a chance to interview a few of them and I’ve gotten incredible quotes that will stick with me forever. Working with this group has given me some good opportunities and I hope that I was able to help out in great ways. Working with this group was about helping the community.  I can’t wait to see what the group will accomplish in the next few years because I know they will make some great changes in the Johnston county area. I’m curious to see if other counties will adopt some principles of this group and establish sister groups in neighboring counties. I am so glad that I was able to work with this group because it even inspired me to do a literature review on the opioid topic.

Kansas City Policy Debate Ruckus Tonight
Tumblr media
Even the most passionate disagreement over public policy seems mundane amid today's news of gunfire and hate crime . . . Still, that doesn't mean it's not important. And so, this evening we focus on the local GOLD STANDARD of Kansas City discourse . . . Here's a glimpse of KCPT's RUCKUS tonight . . . "Mike Shanin interviews U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder about key issues in the new administration including education and healthcare. Then Mary Anne Murray Simons, Jim Heeter, Patrick Tuohey and Steve Mirakian discuss the battle over a vetoed budget bill in Kansas which was ultimately sustained by the Senate after a House override, the continuing debate over a JOCO alternative to KCI and Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch." 3 Dagupeño karatekas to compete in SEA Games
#PHnews: 3 Dagupeño karatekas to compete in SEA Games
DAGUPAN CITY-- Three Dagupeño karatekas made it to the Philippine team and will compete in the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), which will formally open on Nov. 30.
The three karate athletes are part of Filipinas Wado Ryu Karatedo Renmei that is based here. They are Jason Ramil Macaalay, who won silver in the men’s kumite 60-kg event in the 29th Southeast Asian Games held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Mark Andrew Manantan; and John Enrico Vasquez.
"They were all champions, they competed in the Philippine National Games (PNG). Let us pray for them, their coaches and the whole Karate Pilipinas Team. Please watch them compete, your presence and your cheers will greatly inspire our athletes," Karate Pilipinas vice president Alejandro Enrico Vasquez, also their mentor and chief instructor, said in an interview on Wednesday.
Just like the other Philippine team members, the three passed through intense qualifying competitions before becoming members, Vasquez said.
"While it is true that he (Macaalay) was silver medalist in the last SEA Games, his inclusion in this year's Philippine team is not automatic. Praise God, he was able to maintain his good performance," he said.
Joco Vasquez captured two gold medals at the PNG under the 16 to 17 category. He competed in the Regional Division Championship until he reached the All-Division Championship.
Manantan was silver medalist in the PNG seniors Kata, automatically qualifying in the All Division Championship.
Together with Vasquez and Adam Bondoc, they captured the National Championship, automatically qualifying for the Team Kata.
With three of his protégées in the Philippine team, Vasquez said he feels proud, excited, and nervous. "I'm nervous because one of the players is my son. It is different when your child is competing," he added.
Vasquez said the three are consistently attending training and following programs.
"They progressed well as they were exposed joining competitions to becoming children's competition champions, to cadets, juniors. It is not only them who sacrificed a lot but also their parents who spend time and their own resources for the uniform and other expenses of their kids. It is hard to be an athlete, and I’m thankful that I have well-disciplined students like them," he added.
Aside from strict training, the athletes also have to excel in their academic requirements.
"Academics wise, they have to adjust. If they can't cope with both the rigorous training and their academics, they have to stop training in karate because I don’t want them blaming the sport for their poor performance in the school," he said. The Philippine Karate team's first competition will be held on Dec. 7 at 9 a.m. at the World Trade Center. Vasquez said they are currently housed at the Joy-Nostalg Hotel and Suites, sponsored by a private person until Nov. 30.
They will be transferred by the Philippine Sports Commission to Solaire Manila Hotel, their official billeting hotel. (PNA)

“Within the past month, I feel like I’ve sussed it out. It took a while, but it got to a point where I noticed it was affecting my health,” she says, referring to how her perspective and use of social media has changed. “I think you forget how accessible we are when we have mobile phones. In my head, it was like there was a line of people outside my front door who had nasty things to say to me, and I was saying, ‘Come on in! Please sit on my couch; tell me.’ When I realized that was what I was doing, I knew I just had to stop and I haven’t done it since. It’s like, I don’t want these people in my house, I don’t want them in my head.”

What Happens When You Put 2,000 Nerds on a Boat?
How this chaotic miracle comes together is the work of Mr. Coulton, Mr. Sabourin and Greg DiCostanzo, who is the “Storm” of Paul and Storm, and Drew Westphal, the chief operating officer of the partnership. Mr. Sabourin and I met to talk in the ship’s casino, a place we knew would be quiet. In a lounge across the way, the JoCo planners set up more than 40 vintage video game consoles, which drew a crowd day and night. On the casino side, the dealers had nothing to do. “Everybody here actually understands probability,” Mr. Sabourin joked.
These folks haven’t always had an entire ship to themselves. The first cruise attracted about 350 Coulton fans. It’s grown, year by year until three years ago they were able to book a ship. This year, the ship sold out. Next year’s cruise, on an even bigger ship, is selling out fast. No cruise yet has lost money, Mr. Sabourin said.
To Mr. Sabourin, the cruise is not just a job — in fact, a multimillion-dollar-enterprise — and exhausting fun, but also a mission. The organizers seek a diverse cast of performers and passengers. The cruise also raised some $80,000 for Puerto Rico after 2017’s devastating Hurricane Maria.
“We’re helping bring people joy, helping them learn new things and getting them out of their comfort zone,” Mr. Sabourin said. “I want people to be better for having attended this event. Maybe that sounds lofty from someone who writes humorous music for a living, or incongruous for an event happening on a giant floating hotel. But I stand by it.”
To the brink of disaster
The third night of the cruise started with an LGBT-friendly dance party on the open deck of the ship as it slipped out of the pier at Tortola. The mood was light, and the D.J., Riz Rollins, spun songs with his husband, Rob Green. Before his first cruise last year, he said, he’d expected a very white crowd, given the reputation of nerds, but was pleased to encounter a more diverse group. “I didn’t know what a ‘blerd’ was until the cruise,” he said, using the portmanteau term for black nerds. He marveled, too, at the degree to which the JoCo culture is participatory. “It’s the first time I ever saw people dance — to karaoke.”
The next night was supposed to be the biggest show of the trip, an outdoor concert in a San Juan, P.R., park after a day wandering the city. The lineup included well-known performers like Aimee Mann and Jill Sobule, and the headliners were They Might Be Giants. (Ms. Mann, a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter who is anything but nerdy, said in an interview that “It’s not really my crowd, but Jonathan encompasses a lot of different things under his umbrella.”)

#2
This week was not as hectic as last week. The staff were really busy finishing their reports for FTC’s year end assessment. The end of June is FTC’s fiscal year end.
Monday, Nicole and I asked our Program Officers if they would allow us to visit our communities to conduct interviews for our stories. It was a good idea since the children will be expected to be home on a holiday. Nicole and I had communities beside each other so we decided to go together. I was supposed to go San Roque that afternoon to finish up my story and take photos of the house but the volunteers texted me that it was high tide and the water was already waist deep.
Tuesday morning, I went straight to San Roque Elem. School to update the school’s profile. It was an errand given by my boss, Miss Che. After that, I went straight to the office to do work.
Wednesday and Thursday, we were left in the office to continue our stories since the staff were attending FTC’s year end assessment in a hotel. Nikkai, Joco, and I helped Miss Carmhel with cutting and folding name tags for the staff’s conference. We did not have much to do since we wrote our stories already and that we received no orders from our bosses.
Friday, we were told that the office will be treating us lunch and bowling. We did a bit work in the morning. After lunch with the whole FTC staff, we played two games of bowling. The staff and interns were divided among seven groups. I was with Kuya Roy, Kuya Merwyn, Miss Che, and Ate Ilene. The highest scorer per group will play the last game to determine the best player among everyone. My groupmate, Kuya Roy won and was hailed champion. :) haha.
It was fun to hang out with the staff since everyone was really nice and funny. We got to know them better and we’ve finally met everyone. It was a very lax week but I expect a busier week ahead. ;)
