Okay, because I've been seeing some goyim reblog some of my stuff about the Tanakh, and them equating Torah with Tanakh. It's not really malicious, I get they're trying....but guys....Torah does not equal Tanakh.

Tanakh is actually an acronym, think of the English equivalent as being TaNaKh. It stands for Torah, Neviim, and Ketuvim.

Torah is the Five Books of Moses, what we in Judaism also call the Chumashim ('Chumash' is literally derived from the Hebrew word for five). Within each Chumash are many different chapters, each with their own names The Five Books of Moses are:

-Bereishit (Genesis)

-Shemot (Exodus)

-VaYikrah (Leviticus)

-BaMidbar (Numbers)

-and Dvarim (Deuteronomy).

Neviim is Prophets. These books are all the main books of the Prophetic time, begining from Moses's death and the rule of Yehoshua (Joshua) up until the destruction of the First Beit HaMikdash (Temple) and the Babylonian exile. The books are:

-Yehoshua (Joshua)

-Shoftim (Judges)

-Shmuel 1 & 2 (Samuel 1 & 2)

-Malachim 1 & 2 (Kings 1 & 2)

-Yishiayahu (Isaiah)

-Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah)

-Yechezkel (Ezekiel)

-and Trei Asar (Ten additional prophets) which are:

•Hoshea (Hosea)

•Yoel (Joel)

•Amos (Amos)

•Ovadiah (Obadiah)

•Yonah (Jonah)

•Micha (Micha)

•Nachum (Nahum)

•Chavakuk (Habakuk)

•Tzaphnia (Zephaniah)

•Chagai (Haggai)

•Zachariah (Zachariah)

•Malachi (Malachi)

Finally, Ketuvim is Writings. These are basically all the other canonized books that occur chronologically all throughout the Tanakh. They can be stories, records, poetry, philosophy... basically everything the Rabbis in Yavneh decided were important enough to canonize into the Tanakh as we know it today. (Important to note: Because Ethiopian Jews began their diaspora before the official canonization of the Tanakh in Yavneh, their Mäṣḥafä Kedus looks slightly different than the mainstream Tanakh in terms of which books are and aren't included, including additional books that aren't in the official Tanakh. This doesn't mean that Ethiopian Jewry is any less Jewish, it's just a phenomena of repeated exiles and diasporas). The books of Ketuvim are:

-Tehillim (Pslams)

-Mishlei (Proverbs)

-Iyov (Job)

-Shir HaShirim (Song of Songs)

-Root (Ruth)

-Eicha (Lamentations)

-Kohelet (Ecclesiastes)

-Esther (Esther)

-Daniel (Daniel)

-Ezra (Ezra)

-Nechemiah (Nehemiah)

-Divrei HaYamim 1 & 2 (Chronicles 1 & 2)

There were also books that were written at around the same time as some books in Tanakh, that just weren't canonized for one reason or another. But just because those books aren't in the Tanakh, doesn't mean they're not still very important to Judaism and Jewish history and culture.

Additionally, the Tanakh isn't the only book we as Jews based our belief system and culture from. A major tenet of Judaism is the constant addition of commentary and interpretation and translation. In fact, most of Halakha, Jewish law, isn't even based off the Tanakh but rather on Rabbinic commentaries and writings written later, such as Mishnah and Talmud, and then even later commentaries and writings that were based off the earlier commentaries and writings, such as Shulchan Aruch and Sefer HaMitzvot. You'll find that Jewish culture is all about continued learning, translation, and reinterpretation.

So, in summation, Torah ≠ Tanakh. Torah is in the Tanakh, but it's not all of it. But just because something isn't in the Torah, or even in the Tanakh, doesn't mean it's not still extremely important to us.

Queer Media Review: But I’m A Cheerleader (1999)

A tonally mismatched, endearing cult classic.

This review is part of a weekly series of pieces on queer and trans media. See them all here!

Jamie Babbit’s1 first feature film, But I’m A Cheerleader, has, in the years following its release, become something of a classic piece of queer representative media. It frequently tops recommendation lists of films about queer people that don’t end in tragedy (lists that are far shorter than they have any right to be), and it is a film I have heard described as “quintessentially lesbian.”

This film’s status as an iconic lesbian film baffles me. Cheerleader is not a bad film, per se, but it is, in almost every way possible, a sleazy teen comedy that attempts to mine humor out of an incredibly traumatic and horrifying scenario (namely, being sent off to a gay conversion camp). That designation isn’t inherently negative; the same can be said of the original American Pie and John Tucker Must Die, and both of those films are entertaining because they revel in just how sleazy they can be. If But I’m A Cheerleader had committed to reveling in the sleaziness of turning the trauma of conversion therapy in a light comedy, then it might have succeeded on those (less than savory terms.

But Cheerleader is caught in between two worlds. At its core, it’s a film that wants to be a down to earth romance about good people finding love in a dark situation, but that core is constantly at odds with the low-brow humor and unintelligent satire that fills nearly every scene. It never attempts to examine the absurdity inherent to its scenario, and the only clear statement it makes about conversion therapy is that it’s ineffective, which is as obvious a statement on the matter as a film could make. The film also has a wildly inconsistent visual language2, frequently switching between bland stationary shots and handheld tracking shots for no apparent reason, only to return to its bland cinematography a moment later.

And yet, despite all of those flaws, I still rather enjoyed watching Cheerleader. Even with all the poorly designed sleaze surrounding it, the emotional core of Cheerleader is damn compelling, presenting us with a slowly budding romance between two highly likable characters.

That solid emotional core is established early-on through Megan (Natasha Lyonne, of Orange is the New Black fame), a very sympathetic protagonist who is confused about her own sexuality. She frequently fantasizes about her fellow cheerleaders while making out with her boyfriend, and she has a picture of a bikini clad woman in her locker, contrasted with her friend whose locker is adorned with a male model. When she’s ambushed by her friends and parents (in one of the few good uses of visual storytelling, I might add), she’s completely blindsided by them, and she quickly submits to their demands that she attend conversion therapy, despite her beliefs that none of the “evidence” presented was abnormal or confirmed her supposed “homosexuality.”

Megan’s cluelessness and empathy make her romance with Graham (Clea DuVall), another attendee at the conversion therapy camp, all the more believable, as their coupling is treated as a subtle slow, burn. We see them holding hands and touching each other, carefully avoiding the watchful gaze of Mary Brown (Cathy Moriarty), the camp’s strict headmistress. There’s a clear understanding of the danger of their budding relationship in the film, as when Graham deflects suspicion off of their rebellion by claiming to have a crush on Joel (Joel Michaely), a gay Jewish man also attending the camp, Megan is never shown to be jealous of the affection he’s receiving (she even takes a chance to stare flirtatiously at Graham while she’s holding hands with Joel).

The film also does challenge one idea, and that’s the idea that gender expression and fulfillment of gender roles are connected to or determinate of sexuality, though it does so with mixed results. Early on, there’s a scene where the characters must all think about and confess what the “root” of their homosexuality is, and one of the men at the camp claims that his mother allowing him to wear her pumps was the single experience in his life that led to his same-gender attraction. The film wants to paint this as the ridiculous connection that it is, but its strength is lost because so many of the film’s jokes rely on the association between gay men and femininity.3

The film is more successful in challenging stereotypes about sexuality and gender when the masculine presenting Jan (Katrina Phillips) storms out of a group therapy session, upset that her love of softball and unconventional looks have led to her attending the camp despite the fact that she has always been fully and exclusively attracted to men. Her rejection of the camp’s attempt to foist femininity onto her rings true thanks to Phillips’ compelling performance and the film’s lack of insistence that masculinity in women is in any way indicative of same-gender attraction (an acknowledgement that is present in the film’s title).

The ending of the film, despite being rather annoyingly cutesy, is fairly compelling as well, setting up a scenario in which one of the members of the lead couple is about to “graduate” from the camp, and the other must fulfill a wish the graduating partner made in order to convince her to run away with her. It’s an incredibly sweet gesture, and their relationship is given a satisfying conclusion, capping off the film with passionate kisses and annoyingly chipper music. That this scene works despite its presentation is a testament to Babbit’s strength as a director (of actors) and Natasha Lyonne’s strength as an actress, as the two of them sell the emotion of the scene that would otherwise be drowned out by a bad pop musical score.

Such a tonally conflicted, endearing scene is arguably the perfect ending to this film.

1While Babbit hasn’t directed many features of significant acclaim since But I’m A Cheerleader, she has gone on to become a rather prolific TV comedy director, specializing in smaller, character-driven comedies such as Gilmore Girls (for which she directed eighteen episodes), Malcolm in the Middle, and more recently working on hit comedies like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Silicon Valley (she even directed one of the best episodes of Supergirl’s first season!) All of this to say, she’s got a rather impressive body of work behind her, and it would not be surprising if her name were to show up on a highly successful feature comedy sometime in the near future.

The main character is so fun. The concept was neat. They capture Ezra's voice nicely. The smut was gorgeous and wonderfully captured the experience of someone recently um... disarmed.

The Crucible - a Marcus Pike one shot by @whataperfectwasteoftime

The People Dwelling in Jerusalem

1 Now the leaders of the people dwelt at Jerusalem; the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to dwell in Jerusalem, the holy city, and nine-tenths were to dwell in other cities. 2 And the people blessed all the men who willingly offered themselves to dwell at Jerusalem.

3 These are the heads of the province who dwelt in Jerusalem. (But in the cities of Judah everyone dwelt in his own possession in their cities—Israelites, priests, Levites, Nethinim, and descendants of Solomon’s servants.) 4 Also in Jerusalem dwelt some of the children of Judah and of the children of Benjamin.

The children of Judah: Athaiah the son of Uzziah, the son of Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalalel, of the children of Perez; 5 and Maaseiah the son of Baruch, the son of Col-Hozeh, the son of Hazaiah, the son of Adaiah, the son of Joiarib, the son of Zechariah, the son of Shiloni. 6 All the sons of Perez who dwelt at Jerusalem were four hundred and sixty-eight valiant men.

7 And these are the sons of Benjamin: Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah, the son of Kolaiah, the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ithiel, the son of Jeshaiah; 8 and after him Gabbai and Sallai, nine hundred and twenty-eight. 9 Joel the son of Zichri was their overseer, and Judah the son of Senuah was second over the city.

10 Of the priests: Jedaiah the son of Joiarib, and Jachin; 11 Seraiah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, was the leader of the house of God. 12 Their brethren who did the work of the house were eight hundred and twenty-two; and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pelaliah, the son of Amzi, the son of Zechariah, the son of Pashhur, the son of Malchijah, 13 and his brethren, heads of the fathers’ houses, were two hundred and forty-two; and Amashai the son of Azarel, the son of Ahzai, the son of Meshillemoth, the son of Immer, 14 and their brethren, mighty men of valor, were one hundred and twenty-eight. Their overseer was Zabdiel the son of one of the great men.

15 Also of the Levites: Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Bunni; 16 Shabbethai and Jozabad, of the heads of the Levites, had the oversight of the business outside of the house of God; 17 Mattaniah the son of Micha, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, the leader who began the thanksgiving with prayer; Bakbukiah, the second among his brethren; and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun. 18 All the Levites in the holy city were two hundred and eighty-four.

19 Moreover the gatekeepers, Akkub, Talmon, and their brethren who kept the gates, were one hundred and seventy-two.

20 And the rest of Israel, of the priests and Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, everyone in his inheritance. 21 But the Nethinim dwelt in Ophel. And Ziha and Gishpa were over the Nethinim.

22 Also the overseer of the Levites at Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micha, of the sons of Asaph, the singers in charge of the service of the house of God. 23 For it was the king’s command concerning them that a certain portion should be for the singers, a quota day by day. 24 Pethahiah the son of Meshezabel, of the children of Zerah the son of Judah, was the king’s deputy in all matters concerning the people.

The People Dwelling Outside Jerusalem

25 And as for the villages with their fields, some of the children of Judah dwelt in Kirjath Arba and its villages, Dibon and its villages, Jekabzeel and its villages; 26 in Jeshua, Moladah, Beth Pelet, 27 Hazar Shual, and Beersheba and its villages; 28 in Ziklag and Meconah and its villages; 29 in En Rimmon, Zorah, Jarmuth, 30 Zanoah, Adullam, and their villages; in Lachish and its fields; in Azekah and its villages. They dwelt from Beersheba to the Valley of Hinnom.

31 Also the children of Benjamin from Geba dwelt in Michmash, Aija, and Bethel, and their villages; 32 in Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah; 33 in Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim; 34 in Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat; 35 in Lod, Ono, and the Valley of Craftsmen. 36 Some of the Judean divisions of Levites were in Benjamin. — Nehemiah 11 | New King James Version (NKJV) The Holy Bible; New King James Version®. Surinaamse Taekwondo Associatie rondt stijlkampioenschappen succesvol af

De Surinaamse Taekwondo Associatie (STA) heeft zaterdag de nationale taekwondo stijlkampioenschappen met succes afgerond. Deze wedstrijden werden gehouden in de Congreshal. Het was de eerste keer dat de STA wedstrijden organiseerde die volledig afgewerkt werden met het taekwondo onderdeel stijl lopen (poomsae). Het stijl lopen is weer een heel andere vorm van competitie in vergelijking met het welbekende “sparren”. De stijl zijde van taekwondo is wereldwijd populairder aan het worden. Daar heb je ook vormen van paar lopen (dame + heer) en team lopen (groepen van 3). Bij het lopen van stijlen werd de deelnemer beoordeeld op de technische aspecten van taekwondo. Er werd hierbij gekeken naar de correcte uitvoering van basistechnieken, de kracht en snelheid, het loopritme en coördinatie, en al hetgeen rondom de stijlloop genoemd expressie van energie. Voorzitter Gregory Markiet van de STA is tevreden met het verloop van de dag. Hij zegt dat deze tak van taekwondo langzamerhand veel populariteit krijgt in de wereld. Daarom was het was nodig om deze wedstrijden te organiseren. Hij is tevreden met het niveau van de pupillen, maar volgens hem kan het nog beter. “Er moet nog gewerkt worden aan de discipline.” Resultaten: Klasse B – blauw t/m zwarte slip: jeugd t/m 8 jaar: winnaar Jaycee Djosoero, Jeugd meisjes t/m 14 jaar: winnaar Amalia Pawirowinangoen. Jeugd jongens t/m 14 jaar: winnaar Rushul Sewnarain Sukul. Jongens 15-17 jaar: winnaar Shamiel Bhagwandas. Senioren dames 18-30 jaar: winnaar Challegain van Hoop Senioren heren 18-30 jaar: winnaar Micha Lew.
