image ID: the destiel breaking news meme, but after cas says "i love you", dean replies:
cas, danaher corporation and it’s subsidiary company cepheid are still charging tuberculosis (TB) patients in low- and middle-income countries $10–$20 to access quick and accurate testing despite the fact that cepheid’s genexpert machine tests were developed with at least $252 million in taxpayer money and doctors without borders found out that the tests only cost $3–$4.50 to produce. TB is a major cause of death and disability, not to mention that the inaccessibility of these tests leads to the spread of drug resistant TB around the globe.
it’s #timefor5. find out how you can help at tbfighters.org
Danaher - a large U.S. corporation - owns many smaller biotech companies, including Cepheid. Cepheid designs and manufactures diagnostic tests. Their TB GeneXpert test determines whether someone has tuberculosis and if the infection is drug resistant or not, enabling effective treatment.
Using the "printer ink" business model, Danaher sells the testing machines at a reasonable price, but WAAAY overcharges for the test cartridges themselves, especially the cartridges that show whether the type of TB someone has is likely to be drug-resistant, meaning that even when people can get a diagnosis, they may end up wasting valuable time on treatments that are less likely to be effective because they couldn't access the more advanced diagnostic cartridge, which, by the way, costs the SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY TO MANUFACTURER AS THE BASIC DIAGNOSTIC CARTRIDGE. Danaher is PURPOSELY price-gouging and it's costing thousands of lives a year.
But there's something we can do about it.
Contact Danaher and let them know to put #PeopleOverProfits and start selling their diagnostic cartridges for $5. It's #TimeFor5.
Nothing is more punk than increasing access to life saving medical tests for millions of people
If you want to help, here are some ways to contact Danaher and tell them they should reduce the price of these life saving tests to $5:

a lot of people are going to die because Danaher Corp is preventing a life-saving tuberculosis tester from reaching impoverished communities, which have the highest risk of a) contracting and b) dying from tuberculosis in the first place.
but there is something YOU (yes you) can do about it! unlike many problems, this actually can be solved over social media. it's worked before and you can be a part of it working this time.
when john green (@sizzlingsandwichperfection-blog) and the nerdfighters swarmed J&Js social media when they were trying to do something similar, they ended up backing down and letting impoverished communities have access to bedaquiline, a life-saving tuberculosis drug. this is exactly what we need to do this time.
so what can you do? well first watch this video so you can get a more in-depth look at what i'm talking about. it's under 9 minutes and very informative without being too difficult to understand.
second, go ham on social media. even if you can only do one post, that is plenty. twitter, instagram, and linkedin are all great places to start
you can also call their number tomorrow, between the hours of 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM (i believe). flooding them with calls is actually extremely helpful
(202)-828-0850
i know that with how much tragedy we see every day on our dashes, we can become desensitized to this kind of corporate greed and the pain that it causes. we have to, because compassion fatigue is real and difficult. but PLEASE take a minute or two to call the number tomorrow, or use social media to spread the word. you can make a help make a real and tangible positive change over social media
and pls reblog this so it reaches as many people as possible
john green is so iconic for this whole tuberculosis thing
like one day he's posting a reel a day about tuberculosis and next thing you know he's influenced enough social pressure to make two different companies change certain decisions to make tuberculosis treatment and testing more accessible in the most affected countries and also bought a share in danaher just so he can talk about this stuff at shareholder meetings and get the company to stop price gouging
