Text
You're both the fire and the water that extinguishes it. You're the narrator, the protagonist, and the sidekick. You're the storyteller and the story told. You are somebody's something, but you are also your you.

I wanted so badly to lie down next to her on the couch, to wrap my arms around her and sleep. Not fuck, like in those movies. Not even have sex. Just sleep together in the most innocent sense of the phrase. But I lacked the courage and she had a boyfriend and I was gawky and she was gorgeous and I was hopelessly boring and she was endlessly fascinating. So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was hurricane.

"Does it hurt?" he asked. For some reason, I wanted to tell him the truth. "Whether it hurts is kind of irrelevant."

“People were created to be loved. Things were created to be used. The reason why the world is in chaos, is because things are being loved and people are being used.”

Like I can't find the deep down part of me that's pure or unsullied or whatever, the part of me where my soul is supposed to be.

y’all alaska young from ‘looking by alaska’ was very clearly mentally ill as a result of her childhood trauma but everyone was like “alaska is so qUiRkY and eDgY and unpredictable!1” and literally used her bc she was fun to be around?? and when she needed like genuine help they were like “oh she’s in one of her moods again yeah she does that sometimes” like?? what?? and then half the book is dedicated to the Great Big Question of whether she killed herself on purpose or ‘didn’t see the truck’ but it literally doesn’t matter bc alaska was already constantly suicidal, except everyone was just like ‘she’s so cool and edgy’. getting behind the wheel in that weather while that drunk and most importantly in that emotional state was no less suicidal than purposely driving into a truck, and then the main character is like ‘oh the only hot girl that found me, a pretentious white boy, attractive, is dead :(’
and then like the group of friends thinks their big mistake was letting her drive drunk, but i think it doesn’t matter, because she was mentally ill and receiving no real support from the people around her. she would’ve herself killed sooner or later, because suicidality isn’t always actively doing things with the intention of dying, it’s doing something extremely dangerous for some ‘other purpose’ and just...being ok with the possibility that it kills you.
and that stupid quote that was all over like 2015 tumblr annoys me so much, ‘if people were rain, i was a drizzle and she was a hurricane’. PEOPLE ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HURRICANES, MILES, because hurricanes cause so much destruction and grief and loss. and the it feeds into the whole thing of ‘cRaZy GiRLs fUcK bEsT’, going that extra step of not only romanticizing but also fetishizing mental illness.
and, ok, imagine she lives, and she gets help, and becomes more stable and stops putting herself in dangerous situations, and it everyone is appalled because she used to be so Fun and Quirky and Edgy and now she’s just a bore, Normal, just like everyone. stops with the strawberry wine before getting blackout drunk. and she’s not herself anymore, they say. alaska is gone. and when she relapses...oh, it’s good to have her back. adventurous, fun-loving.

“We never really talked much or even looked at each other, but it didn't matter because we were looking at the same sky together, which is maybe even more intimate than eye contact anyway. I mean, anybody can look at you. It's quite rare to find someone who sees the same world you see.” -John Green, Turtles All the Way Down
