Black and White
I keep thinking about the relationship MacNamara and Wiley had. Wiley was his mentor when he was still a part of P.E.I.P, so they definitely had a close relationship
So like.. imagine how betrayed and broken MacNamara felt when Wiley decided to pledge his loyalty to Wiggly/other Lords in Black, turning from a close friend into a foe
Ignore the text, I still have no idea how to make text look good in a comic also the swipe is for instagram, can be found there too
Reblogs are appreciated

One thing I just noticed in tgwdlm is when Schaeffer introduces Paul, she says "well our sources say you two knew each other quite well. People would like to see it become something more" and I find the implications of this line funny bc shes basically paraphrasing macnamara from earlier, something he said mid mission so I feel like this implies that once Paul left, he went straight to comms and just,,,, started to gossip. To his military co workers. Mid mission.
Anyways I love John macnamara

Lex: The best part of an Oreo is the black cookie part and not the white frosting part, deal with it.
MacNamara: Darkness without light is an abyss. Light without darkness is blinding. You cannot have a coin with one side.
Lex: Yo Socrates, it’s a fucking cookie.

Okay so in the credits of tgwdlm it's spelled McNamara and in the Black Friday credits its spelled MacNamara so if he is in Yellow Jacket I hope they spell his name differently again I think that'd be funny

Ethan: 'Sup dad
MacNamara: Oh, hi
Lex: Hey is it okay if Deb and I see the new Star Wars tonight?

MacNamara, rummaging through drawers: Do you want a normal bandaid or colourful one?
MacNamara: Okay listen-

after watching tgwdlm and black friday back-to-back i think the evolution of macnamara’s character is SUPER interesting to watch
like in tgwdlm he’s a lot more of a stock, goofy, grizzled-general character; he gets a lot of laughs, and you can hear jeff putting on a voice for him to fit that persona, which he drops in BF. BF! john is very clearly more developed--not necessarily a different character, but more like in an ensemble tv show, how characters are sometimes reduced to more cartoonish, one-dimensional version of themselves if an episode’s focus is on someone else, to highlight the central characters. tgwdlm!john is still john, he’s driven, intense, cracks jokes, and is fighting for good--if he were less complex he would have tried to kill Paul as per his orders.
In BF, tho, he’s getting a lot more focus--we see him doing his job, deeply caring about his teammates and his charges and his country, dooming himself to save his president and reaching out to help Lex, a complete stranger, even as he’s dying. He’s much more than the gruff, all-american general that’s played for laughs in tgwdlm, but his core is still there in his patriotism and his manner towards the civilians (his first scene with Goodman reminds me a LOT of him and paul’s meeting).
anyway i don’t have a main point, i just though it was neat to see how Mac grew between the shows, i’m excited to see him again (and his husband pretty please starkid)

Pokey and controlling the narrative
TGWDLM is a story that has a narrative that is very much controlled by Pokey. He has a set main character, and certain character archetypes and goals, for both the story and the characters. This is most obviously demonstrated in the opening number where the Hive (Pokey) lets us know exactly who are main character is.
It's Paul. He's a grinch and a grump and he's boring and that's because he doesn't like musicals. Which is a bad thing. He should join their hive, their singing season.
We're also introduced to Emma. To Pokey, she's the love interest, and that's it. Her introduction is just "Oh he pines after a cute lil barista. Isn't that worth a show stopping fiesta, yeah?" This says nothing about her, just her relation to Paul.
When Paul and Emma talk to each other later in Hidgens bunker, that developed their relationship, but Pokey didn't want that. He let the conversation go on long enough for the audience to like Paul and Emma, and for Paul to continue to develop his want. But they were interrupted. Literally. When Emma goes, "Listen, Paul, I-" they're interrupted by the Hive
Something that I do find interesting is General Macnamara. He very clearly gets Paul to say what his want is. "Friends don't move my heart son, is there a chance at something more?" "I want there to be" This is despite the fact that he's not infected yet, so I'm not sure why he'd so obviously push for Paul's want.
I'm not entirely sure what I'm trying to get at here, but the point is, Pokey works to control the narrative throughout the whole show. I think it would've been interesting to see the other characters introduced in the opening song, because I bet they would've been reduced to simple one dimensional character tropes, because I think that's how Pokey sees all of them. If anyone else wants to add on, I'd love to see everyone's thoughts.
