Eddie Winter / Hancock Headcanon
Someone was scavenging the old buildings in Boston (for the sake of this headcanon, we'll say it was Cricket, the trader), looking for salvage and chems, when she stumbled upon the last dose of Eddie Winter's experimental radiation drug that he didn't get the chance to use before he had to hide in his shelter. The Chem is a stronger dose than what it was initially, due to the passage of time and external radiation. She sold the chem to a depressed John McDonough in Goodneighbor who took the drug as a win-win, thinking it would either ghoulify him or kill him.
The radiation drug Hancock used was the last dose of Eddie Winter's experimental radiation treatments.

What are your headcanons regarding what Hancock's first name was when he was still McDonough? Do you think it was actually John? I know during his backstory dialogue he quotes Mayor McDonough saying "I finally did it, John", but Hancock coulda easily replaced his old first name with his chosen one when telling the story.
I always go two ways. Either it was something short and/or sharp that sounds laid back and easy going, maybe unique and rebellious, or something really embarrassing. Like Gilbert (No offence Gilberts, just thinking of that Tweet for an example). Like how Flynn Rider changed his name from Eugene Fitzherbert. Of course, Hancock felt a connection to John Hancock and what he stood for, but I also think it woulda definitely helped (And been kinda funny) if in the back of his mind he was also thinking 'Man yeah fuck Gilbert why did they have to pick that?'
Imagine when he's telling Sole about his past, he's just like 'I just couldn't stand looking at the bastard I saw in the mirror anymore. Didn't help that his name was Gilbert' and Sole, despite the seriousness of the conversation, can't help but laugh at the joke.
In all seriousness- For me, he gives me Leo vibes. Leo McDonough.

Hi! Congratulations on 1.5K! I couldn’t think of anyone who deserves it more!
I wanted to request a deathclaw with the prompt “I’m trying to do the right thing! Don’t you see that?”
With the one and only Hancock!
(Silently cheering for angst in the background)
Hey everybody! Sorry there was another brief break from answering these, but I'm slowly but surely getting through all the event requests, so just keep an eye out if you're still waiting for yours!
Also, thank you to the lovely people who sent words of encouragement last week <3 Y'all helped me out a ton and I'm super grateful to you 🥰
But anyway! I liked this one a lot, and felt I could go multiple ways with it, but I ended up with this!
I hope you like it! 😁
"Hancock, I'm trying to do the right thing here, can't you see that?"
"And I'm trying to tell you I don't want any part in it, alright?"
He refused to meet their look, but they could see the way his hands flexed in frustration, the way his jaw tightened, they could hear how his voice took on that desperate rasp that only appeared when he was being defensive.
Still though, they persisted. They had to, if they were ever going to find out the truth.
"Why not? He's your bother. No one will know better than you if it's really him, or if what Piper claims is actually true."
"I can't-- Sole... He's my brother, yeah, but we ain't close. I don't even know him. Not anymore, not like I used to, and even then, I... Well, you know siblings. There was always something to fight or argue about, eventually we stopped talking, really, and..."
Sole remained quiet as he trailed off, as they watched him watch his own twisting fingers, the way they twiddled with the fabric of his belt where it settled in his lap, his eyes refusing to flit anywhere else, lest his friend be able to see the frustration there, the hurt.
"It's not that I don't wanna do something about it all, not that I don't wanna help, cuz I do. I swore the last time I did nothing that it would never be that way again, but... This shit..."
One gnarled hand swiped over Hancock's brow, like he could whisk the strain of this decision away, or even block it out completely if only he just rubbed hard enough.
"He may be an asshole, and he may not even be real, but... he's the only family I got left... you know?"
Sole's jaw tightened at that, their mind unwillingly thrusting the image of their son behind their eyes. Their son... the leader of the organization that was making Hancock go through this pain at all, like countless others forced apart from the ones they love, because of the overwhelming fear of the world with the Institute in it.
"Yeah." They nodded to him grimly, their breath very nearly refusing to leave their constricted throat. "I know."
Finally, his midnight gaze locked with their own, a knowing sympathy shining in the dark, starry depths.
"Should we even go on with the investigation, then?" Sole asked him earnestly, "I don't wanna hurt you--"
"Do what you gotta do, brother/sister." His voice was tired, as though they'd been fighting with fists rather than words, "But do me a favor?"
Sole nodded to him.
"Don't tell me what you find out. I don't wanna know."

Oh yes, before everything else happened I saved these screenshots from John McDonagh's "The Guard", because it really feels like a meme. Or at least a stellar quotation.

So I just found out Strong is likely Guy McDonough?!
like omg holy shit the timeline is right there and it makes sense from what we can see of Strong
The Insititute gets their ‘test subjects’ via abduction. Not all the people they took are replaced with synths but the replaced people were definitely test subjects - best way to get rid of them/no body.
McDonough was most likely swapped before he started campaigning to be mayor. So sometime during or shortly before 2282.
The Institutes FEV program was still running during the time McDonough got swapped. Brian Virgil got the program shut down when he escaped in 2287, after taking over the year before.
But why does this mean Strong is Guy? Like how can one mutant be traced to one man. Because of what we know about Strong.
MacBeth is ultimately a story about political power and how it destroys people and their families (!!!)
Some of the things Strong says link to him being an educated person before he changed (Diamond City has free schooling) - Like Strong is dumb but he KNOWS things okay, and he dislikes chems and alcohol??
When you take Strong to a settlement and leave him there, he hangs out by the chemisty bench. Why? BECAUSE HANCOCK AND CHEMS
He (usually) likes when you ask for more money when doing quests, but dislikes if you ask Hancock for more money
Strong likely has no idea who he was, he doesn’t care, he is a supermutant and despises the idea of being changed back human (voice lines when you take him with you to see Virgil) - but not knowing why you are doing something doesn’t mean there isn’t a reason for it, the SUBCONCIOUS mind is still at play! Holy shit man, this whole time you were travelling with both McDonough brothers
This whole time, after you take down the Institute and find out Mayor McDonough is a replacement and what that means to Hancock...
This whole time, you had him there hidden in plain sight...

My Hancock Headcanons
For those of you that haven’t read my fanfiction yet, here’s what I believe Hancock’s past to be like when he was still John McDonough and you can add your own headcanons in the comments! These aren’t in a specific order:
Abusive father / submissive mother background. Also, when John was born, he had a weak immune system and stayed sickly, much like his mother, until he got a little older. His sicknesses and injuries made his father treat him like the weaker child out of his two sons.
Guy wasn’t a bad person, and he was a decent brother, but John and Guy had a lot of ups and downs, mainly stemming from childhood trauma and expectations not being met. Often, Guy got sick of John’s toxic behavior.
John became proficient with a knife because his ex was extremely good at it, and he learned from her. However his ex was mentally abusive. His abusive father and his abusive ex were the reasons that solidified his belief that he didn’t want to get tied down by anyone.
John’s abusive girlfriend’s name was Maggie and cared too much about money, even selling Hancock’s belongings.
John used to love reading American history books and sometimes went out of his way to buy them from vendors when he was older.
Guy gave Hancock his first gun (a shotgun) when he was 16, and Preston Garvey’s grandfather was the one that first taught him how to use it.
He does know how to play guitar though he hasn’t done it in years. His last legitimate employer taught him how to play and gifted him his favorite guitar, but the guitar was smashed by Vic’s boys in Goodneighbor.
John had a good (platonic) relationship with Piper at one point. After she and Nat moved to Diamond City, Hancock saw a lot of himself and his brother in these two kids and took a liking to them. He helped them when he could, and they started to see him as a father figure before he had to leave Diamond City.
Preston’s family always told him to stay away from John because he was a terrible influence.
John’s employment history includes delivery boy, kitchen hand, caravan guard, mercenary, and scavenger.
