💬 - Whether or not Philip Glass' critics have a point or whether his status as a celebrated composer is earned
He really can't help it - he throws his head back and he lets out a roar of laughter that likely has people jumping a block away the noise is so loud and so throaty.
Tumblr media
Hank's still chuckling as he slides his glasses from his nose and rubs at them with a cleaning cloth, giving Tess a very fond, very amused, very warm smile.
"Oh, very good, very good."
It takes him about three seconds to take mental inventory of Philip Glass' life work. It'd be quicker, but he's still laughing a little.
"So, to be succinct, as I so rarely am, I think both points can absolutely be true at the same time. I can think of few celebrated composers who don't have a point to made against them, and often several, in fact, that you find yourself craning a head and thinking, there really is something in that. I could of course cite Mahler, Wagner, Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Bizet, Berlioz, Debussy, Chopin - but then we would be here all day, and, let's face it, Tess, it's you and I, so it really would be all day."
Tumblr media
"With that prefaced, let's engage with the point at hand, to wit - Glass' work as a composer, which has oft been criticised for a lack of substance, for being, if you'll pardon the modern turn of phrase, all vibes and no structure. There's something in that, I suppose, in some of his more reiterative and repetitive pieces, which often focus more on the building of tone rather than telling a story.
Compare him, if you will, with his contemporary film composers, say, Vangelis, John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith - the story of the film is contained within their musical choices just as surely as it is within the visuals and the mise-en-scène, but not quite so with Glass. TIE Fighter Attack is an intrinsic part of the story of Star Wars: A New Hope, just as surely as Red Alert is of Star Trek: First Contact's Battle of Sector 001, or Vangelis' Blade Runner Blues.
Pruit Igoe and Prophecies is not TIE Fighter Attack. This is indisputable."
Tumblr media
"And yet, to criticise him for that is, while I suppose valid, rather missing the point. No, Pruit Igoe and Prophecies is not TIE Fighter Attack. Because it isn't trying to be. It's trying to be Pruit Igoe and Prophecies, just as Koyannisqatsi is not trying to be Star Wars, it's trying to be Koyannisqatsi, and succeeding quite well at that.
You can dislike one or the other, but to say that there is no substance simply because it lacks what you consider to be the usual signifiers of structure - a strong leitmotif, a pleasing counter-melody, parallel fourths or fifth - is to betray a simple aesthetic distaste for minimalism. Glass' music is not designed to be downloaded onto an iPod or a Spotify playlist, it's designed to be, if anything, a sensory experience, it's designed to roll over you and for you to savour the repetition as it occurs. But that's a matter of subjective taste, of course."
Tumblr media
Hank leans back, contemplative. He thinks for a moment.
Tumblr media
"Tess?"
Tumblr media
". . . Why did the glass go to therapy?"
Tumblr media
"It had too many issues it found itself reflecting on."

It just makes me so angry that I want to FUCKING CRY that Riley is haunted by his addiction, haunted by the things it made him do. Haunted by the fact that it turned him into a murderer, and he feels so guilty and he just wants to be a better man and is trying, really trying to atone and get better and be better and then BECAUSE OF FUCKING JOHN PRUIT AND HIS SELFISHNESS AND DELUSIONS he is given YET ANOTHER addiction that will turn him into a murderer and then John is saying that the vampirism (he says blessing but whatever) takes away the guilt that comes with murder but Riley doesn’t want that, he doesn’t want to give up his humanity, he doesn’t want to give up being a better man and he is not afraid of death, so he knows that his prolonged life is not worth the lives of others which is something that John could not come to terms with and that’s why his sacrifice is just so beautiful to me and also so sad

Bird Box

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009)
Crime, Drama |
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is a American crime drama film directed by Werner Herzog and starring Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Tom Bower, Jennifer Coolidge, Alvin ‘Xzibit’ Joiner, Val Kilmer, and Brad Dourif.
Though the film’s title and story loosely resembles that of Abel Ferrara’s 1992 film Bad Lieutenant, according to Herzog, it is neither a sequel nor a remake; its only commonality is a corrupt policeman as the central character. Nonetheless, the director of the original Bad Lieutenant film, Abel Ferrara, expressed dismay that the Herzog film was being made. Both Bad Lieutenant films were produced by Edward R. Pressman.
In August 2005, Terence McDonagh is a New Orleans police sergeant. While cleaning out a locker after Hurricane Katrina, he notices that a prisoner may not have been transferred. When he finds the prisoner about to drown, he mocks him before eventually jumping in the water to save him. He is promoted to police lieutenant and given a medal for his work, but has suffered a serious back injury because of the rescue. As a result, he is prescribed Vicodin to manage the pain.
Six months later, McDonagh is now not only addicted to painkillers, but is habitually using several other drugs including cocaine and cannabis. He has convinced a person that works in the police department to bring him drugs sent to the evidence room. His girlfriend Frankie Donnenfeld, a prostitute, also does cocaine and they often share drugs. He has become estranged from his father Pat, a recovering alcoholic, and his alcoholic stepmother, Genevieve. Over the course of the film, he uses his position as an officer to bully people and steal more drugs.
Director: Werner Herzog
Writer: William M. Finkelstein (screenplay)
Stars: Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Russell M. Haeuser, Jennifer Coolidge, Val Kilmer, Xzibit, Fairuza Balk

Would it be a good idea or even work to join the reserves during college and then go to OCS to become an active duty officer?
COMMENTARY:
Bryant Trieu is working through a current solution to that issue. Read his post.
I received an ROTC commission as a part of my personal career Plan A. The real issue for me, personally, was how I would do in college? I didn’t really otunderstand school until I got to college and I didn’t really understand scholarship until I got a masters degree. In between, I went to Vietnam as a 1LT and ran a recon platoon for the 1/22nd Infantry, the people who would capture 34 years later, give or take a millenium.
I recommend that path: get a liberal arts degree (which requires a language and learning how to think in another language as a process an excellent preparation for command. If you just want to be clerk without the hassle of sergeants hoping for a gig-line violation just to pass the time. Of course, as an officer, a correct gig line is a moral obligation.
I had fraternity brothers who were in Army or Air Force ROTC and, as far as I know, ended up in Vietnam or Germany after both undergraduate and law school. I knew how to avoid Vietnam. It never occurred to me as a serious thought beyond being prevented from combat by some greater need of the service. I got to Vietnam about the time John Bolton convinced himself, in a truly Randian rationalization, that he joined the National Guard because he really thought Vietnam was a lost cause and it didn’t need him to add to the confusion.
This is where you begin to fade in Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” behind his patriotic zeal in his current role of dismantling NATO and our United Nations entanglements, which has been a crypto-Nazi wet dream since Robert Welch formed The John Birch Society (JBS), 4 years after the Army-McCarthy Hearings, when the current ideological basis for the GOP Deep State were established. George Lincoln Rockwell formed the American Nazi Party
Commander of the American Nazi Party
in 1959 and, in 1960, William F. Buckley issued The Sharon Statement, the manifesto of the Conservative Movement more or less identified with Barry Goldwater and the KKK. These are the ideological hard core of the GOP Deep State.
George Lincoln Rockwell was killed in 1967 by the same white supremacist element in the GOP Deep State that supplied James Earl Ray and, possibly, Jack Ruby. The GOP Deep State didn’t exist at that time, but that particular element is still out there. It showed up at Charlottesville. I have a theory that John Patler served the purposes of people who wanted Pat Buchanan close to Nixon. Pat Buchanan has always been an agent of these alt.right organizations. like the KKK, as distinct from the corporate crypto-Nazi careerist generally associated with Bill Buckley’s Young Americans for Freedom, Barry Goldwater’s campaign, Nixon’s Plumbers, Reaganauts and the neo-cons.
Pat Buchanan grew up white in DC and George Lincoln Rockwell was in Playboy about the time Pat could have crossed the Potomac and became involved with Rockwell’s protest of the NAACP’s protests of Glen Echo Park in the early 60s. One of the reasons why the light rail service from Georgetown to Glen Echo was abandoned was because the good liberal white citizens didn’t want a metro stop for rowdy black kids, which is why Glen Echo took out its public swimming pool.
Then Pat went away to college and ended up as a journalist in St. Louis, where white bigots wear their racist heritage on their sleeves and caught somebody’s ear and knew he was perfect for the crypto-Nazi agenda Nixon may have planned all along, but they had this loose thread of George Lincoln Rockwell in Pat’s back story, so, it was effectively erased.
And that’s the section of the GOP Deep State John Bolton tended, pretending he was a rational man of destiny and not really scared shitless of going to Vietnam. The only thing that scared white boys like him even worse was Kent State, when National Guard pukes like John Bolton began gunning down white kids like they were black looters in the ghettos of Watts, Detriot and DC.
So, going to Vietnam was the essence of my Plan A. The fact is, I didn’t have a Plan B. And I knew, flying into Saigon in July 1979, I was joining a lost cause. It was probably always a lost cause once the godless commie cocksuckers in Hanoi decided to smash their way into power like Scott Pruit at the EPA or Betsy DeVos at Education or Mick Mulvaney where ever he uses indoor plumbing. However, in Vietnam, it was a war America could not win when the Diem brothers were assassinated. I was 16. I saw it on the CBS evening news. I had begun watching the evening news during the McCarthy hearings. My dad was working for Ridgeway at the time, but that wasn’t the reason. There was lots of news reel on Korea as the war wound down. Victory at Sea was running on Sunday nights. It was the stuff I grew up watching. So, by the time Vietnam became a house-hold word for the John Boltons of the world, I had friends who had been evacuated from Saigon in 1962 in 24 hours to the Phillipines. The Army wasn’t going to make the mistake MacArthur did by not evacuating the American distaff immediately after Pearl Harbor.
And, for me, ROTC was destiny.
I had a fraternity brother who was in the Marine ROTC program. They went to two summer camps instead of on-campus drill. Turp was a year behind me and was from the same home town as Mike Pence. I think he got washed out, medically, during his 2nd Summer camp, because he never got his commission. I spent a long weekend with him when I got back, which included a serious summer Saturday afternoon kegger that ends up with Ox, the house mascot, eating a spiked water melon and wandering off for 3 days, sleeping it off. I never asked for the details of his Marine ambitions, but he was totally fired-up after his first summer camp.
If you are young and played enough organized sports or theatrical dance to appreciate a physically challenging but exhilarating adventure vacation, it’s hard to beat basic training. The Crucible is the one thing the US Army could adopt from the USMC to end up their Basic Training, especially as women are increasingly integrated in the operational dynamical configuration.
However, if you are acquiring a liberal arts degree, i believe the routine of class room uniform inspection and leadership laboratory on a drill field over 4 years is excellent training that cannot be duplicated outside of the military academies. There is a certain meditation on the military arts and sciences that spit shining shoes and polishing brass produces, a certain zen, the ceremony and dignity of the profession of arms.
So, my recommendation is to acquire a 4 year liberal arts degree and ROTC commission simultaneously. You owe it to yourself to go on active duty for two years.
