Annie (1982). A spunky young orphan is taken in by a rich eccentric, much to the chagrin of the cantankerous woman who runs the orphanage.
With just enough cynicism to keep itself from being saccharine and an absolutely delightful soundtrack, there's a reason Annie's left her mark on pop culture. Some of the cinematography is pretty wonderful too. 7/10.

In 1992, ten years before he would helm the film version, Rob Marshall directed a magnificent production of CHICAGO for the Long Beach Civic Opera that was choreographed by Ann Reinking.

Jessica Lange and Roy Scheider in All That Jazz (Bob Fosse, 1979)
Cast: Roy Scheider, Jessica Lange, Ann Reinking, Leland Palmer, Cliff Gorman, Ben Vereen, Erzsebet Foldi, Michael Tolan, Max Wright, William LeMessena, Irene Kane, Deborah Geffner, John Lithgow, Sandahl Bergman. Screenplay: Robert Alan Aurthur, Bob Fosse. Cinematography: Giuseppe Rotunno. Production design: Philip Rosenberg, Tony Walton. Film editing: Alan Heim. Music: Ralph Burns.
Bob Fosse's All That Jazz has a valedictory feeling to it, and not just because it's about a man foreseeing his own death, which strikingly foreshadows that of Fosse himself. It also feels like one of the last films of the 1970s, a decade associated with young hotshot American filmmakers who were determined to go their own way and to craft movies filled with a personal vision that didn't sugarcoat the material or pander and talk down to the audience. After them, the myth goes, came the deluge of movies made with a view to spawning sequels and franchises. That summary is oversimple, of course, but perhaps it does illuminate why a film like All That Jazz continues to fascinate viewers, despite its inherent messiness and occasional excessive self-indulgence. It's held together by Fosse's abundant mad energy and by a cunning, committed performance by Roy Scheider as the driven, workaholic, self-destructive Joe Gideon, whom no one would deny is a warts-and-all self-portrait by Fosse. All That Jazz is usually classified as a musical, because of its elaborate production numbers, but it fits the genre only loosely. It's a bit like 42nd Street (Lloyd Bacon, 1933) in that it's a "backstage musical" with a serious undercurrent, although the undercurrent becomes a torrent in All That Jazz, and the music becomes an ironic counterpoint to the sardonic drama of the life and death of Joe Gideon.

Book Review: Ask Pastor John, by Tony Reinke
Tumblr media
What does the Bible have to say about ethics, theology, and everyday life? In Ask Pastor John, Tony Reinke presents John Piper's Bible answers to 750 of life's most important questions.
Biblical Wisdom Abounds
Based on the Ask Pastor John Podcast, this book categorizes, distills, and synthesizes 10 years worth of words. The book covers a lot of ground in over 500 pages, but Reinke keeps it moving by strictly presenting the meat of Piper's answers. Biblical wisdom abounds.
I am a fan of the podcast - I've listened to every episode. This book is an excellent representation of the material and magic that makes the podcast special. It is broadly accessible, but also able to niche down into specific topics. The Bible and politics, marriage and dating, exercise and food, entertainment and sorrow. There is something here for everyone.
Clear, Compelling, Christ-Exulting
I was personally interested in reading Reinke's Introduction: A Little History of APJ (and Why I Wrote This Book). It details the quick start of putting the podcast together. God's sovereignty is on full display. The book itself is a beautiful hardcover with the podcast logo embossed on the cover, making it a must-have for avid listeners.
Reinke calls his book a guide to the podcast. But it's also a guide to good, clear, Christian thinking. When you Ask Pastor John, you'll get compelling, Christ-exulting answers. This book is a landmark work for Piper and Reinke, and a flagship resource for those who want to desire God.
I received a media copy of Ask Pastor John and this is my honest review. Thomas Strupp and his family served their neighborhood around N.33rd and Clarke Sts. from 1919 to 1965 with delicious baked goods, produce, a few grocery items and even tobacco. The work day, or night, was long. Bakers Howard and Robert Strupp helped their father set the dough around 8 in the evening, then slept, ready to start work again at 1 a.m. so the baked goods would be ready for customers who arrived as early as 5:30. This 1931 photo shows Clara Reinke (left) a longtime clerk, with Emily Strupp, wife of Thomas, ready to wait on customers. The doors behind them lead to family living quarters and the baking room. The Depression years were hard, and the Strupps sold everything from condiments to Crackerjacks to earn enough money to live on. Prices reflected the times. Bread was 7 and 10 cents a loaf, schnecks (long johns) 4 for 10 cents, doughnuts 25 cents a dozen, pies 30 cents. After Thomas Strupp died in 1954, his widow and sons Howard and Robert operated the bakery until 1965. Howard was technical adviser for the bakery at the Streets of Old Milwaukee exhibit at the Milwaukee County Museum. Photo and information courtesy Howard Strupp. "Remember When" is prepared by the Milwaukee Public Library with resources from the local history collection.

Took a quick minute to color and reink this Marvel Comics Wolverine #8 recreation from years ago I did. Way better than I expected colored. As a child I would draw G.I. Joe, TMNT, MOTU, so doing comic book artwork or superhero stuff always brings me back to a better time, I should do more of it. Shoutout to the legend John Buscema who did the original cover. If you'd like to own this or want me to recreate a comic cover for you, get at me. Also, hope everyone has a fantastic February! 💙✍🌟👊 #wolverine #hulk #marvelcomics #art https://www.instagram.com/p/CoJfc0IstyB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Eric Beach: Lessons for Missions from the Ministries of John G. Paton and Wang Ming-dao (王明道)
“Christians don’t always recognize the importance of the local church and church polity to missions. Yet some of the great missionaries and evangelists of the past knew that building healthy churches was central to their work.”
Abe Cho: Gleanings from Ruth: An Advent Reflection
“The view from above, paradoxically, is not the viewpoint of God. A truly biblical worldview is one in which we see the world the way God sees it by looking over the shoulder of the poor, the despised, and the oppressed. It is the view from below.”

Featured This Week On SOLA Network
Karisa You: Meeting Jesus in the Parking Lot this Christmas Season
“While the Bible clearly emphasizes that we are saved by grace alone through faith in Jesus and forgiven of our sins by God’s kindness, passages like Matthew 25 remind us of Jesus’s command that those who love Him must love His people too and help meet their tangible needs.”
Aaron Lee: Shaping Your Identity with Spotify? Why It’s Better to Be a New Creation in Christ
“The world thinks we’re a blank slate able to shape our own story and craft our own identities. The Bible presents to us a different picture. We’re born as enemies of God. But when we become reconciled to Jesus, our identity then becomes in Christ, and our safety is in the cross.”
Faith Chang: Our Family’s Favorite Children’s Books from Westminster Kids
Powered by the Westminster Bookstore, Westminster Kids is a ministry of Westminster Theological Seminary that is dedicated to curating biblically faithful children’s books. Faith Chang shares books she’s often recommended, given away, and loved.
