Elevator, Severance Hall, University Circle, Cleveland, OH (2) (3) (4) by Warren LeMay
Via Flickr:
Built in 1931, this Classical Revival and Art Deco-style building was designed by Walker and Weeks to house the renowned Cleveland Orchestra. Severance Hall is named for John L. Severance, and his wife, Elisabeth Huntingdon DeWitt Severance, whom made their money as trustees of Standard Oil, and funded the construction of the building. The building is wedge-shaped with an octagonal southwest section housing the lobby, and a fan-shaped northeast section, housing the auditorium. The building is sited on a knoll overlooking Wade Lagoon in Wade Park at the corner of Euclid Avenue and East Boulevard in Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood, and features landscaped grounds with planting beds, trees, and a front terrace.

🕊 Remembering Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II 🕊
On the sad occasion of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, my memories came flooding back and I would like to share these with you.
I feel privileged to have been alive during the whole of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. When I was 10 years old I entered an essay competition in Liverpool and won my division for my essay about the British Monarchy so I have been a fan for a long time. In 1953 when the Queen was crowned everyone on our street in Speke, Liverpool finally got a television set and we settled down to watch the Coronation in glorious black and white.
Looking back I am honoured and amazed to see that I met Her Majesty eight or nine times and each time she impressed me with her great sense of humour combined with great dignity. These times were:
Firstly, when The Beatles got the MBE on 26th October 1965. I remember us being taken aside and shown what the correct protocol was. We were told how to approach Her Majesty and not to talk to her unless she talks to us. For four Liverpool lads, it was, “Wow, hey man.”
The next time we met was some years later at the Royal Albert Hall on 13th December 1982. It was at an event Linda and I attended called An Evening for Conservation. Part of the evening included some orchestral re-workings of some Beatles songs and I remember chatting with Her Majesty about them. She also re-introduced me to Prince Philip who said he remembered our previous meeting in the sixties!
Our third meeting would come in the next decade. In June 1996 The Queen graciously agreed to open the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts on the site of my old school that George Harrison and myself attended. She also had previously given a donation which the school was very honoured to receive.
Just one year later and our next encounter was a very proud day for me. It was one of the best days ever. I felt very honoured to be offered a Knighthood and of course it would have been rude to turn it down! I remember it was in the springtime and the skies were blue. It was a wonderful day and I remember thinking I’d come a long way from a little terrace house in Liverpool!
It was a new millennium the next time we were together again and what an occasion it was! Celebrating her Golden Jubilee, we got to rock out in her garden. As Her Majesty was on stage receiving applause at the end of the show I joked, ‘Well I suppose this will be happening next year then?’ to which she replied, ‘Not in my garden it won’t!’
We were to see each other again shortly afterwards, but this time on my home turf! I was very honoured to be given a painting exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery, which John and I had visited on many occasions as students. It was my extreme privilege to be able to show Her Majesty around the gallery.
A decade on and Nancy and I attended a special event titled Celebration of the Arts at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and it was a thrill as ever to talk with Her Majesty.
On June 4th 2012, The Queen would celebrate her Diamond Jubilee and it was so special in many ways. This was the first time I performed in front of her since her last Jubilee, and seeing all the people stretching down Pall Mall was great, as was meeting other members of the Royal Family afterwards. It was a great weekend to be British.
Our last meeting came in 2018. Because of my respect and love for the Queen and her fabulous sense of humour when I was given the Companion of Honour medal I shook her hand, leaned in and said, ‘We have got to stop meeting like this,’ to which she giggled slightly and got on with the ceremony. I did wonder if I was a bit too cheeky after saying this, after all this was The Queen, but I have a feeling she didn’t mind.
God bless you. You will be missed.
(Sir Paul McCartney)

Reactions As I Read: ● my first Mister Freeze issue ● omg those ice zombies are creepy af ● i like how even the word balloons have icicles ● oh hey, Selina! ● Lucius! 💙 and his daughter! I think I've met her once before but I can't remember in which issue ● (pg 6) oo, a particularly moody crouching-on-a-ledge-while-the-cape-billows panel ● (pg 7) 13th floor, eh? ● and I thought I kept the thermostat too low… ● is he going to become an ice zombie? ● "my love"--is that Nora? no, can’t be… ● yikes, yup, a white walker ● ah, Mister Freeze didn't intentionally do it… but it was far from informed consent ● Hildy is her name ● (pg 12) ha! well that caught Batman off guard ● Ice Pack, oh lordt ● she's just not into you, dude ● this is why monologues are a bad idea ● wth happened in the end there? all I can think of is Solomon Grundy
Synopsis: Bruce Wayne meets with a reformed Selina Kyle, the Catwoman, who wants to invest money in Wayne Enterprises as part of her efforts of going straight. Giving her a chance, Bruce agrees and after she has left the building, he asks Lucius Fox to investigate the activities and current profile of Miss Kyle. While on Lucius' office, Bruce meets his daughter Tiffany Fox, who runs Wayne Enterprises' ghetto drug-rehabilitation program.
Later, Batman answers the summons of the Bat-Signal and meets with Commissioner Gordon on the crime scene, where they find the frozen body of financier Jacob Riker, a clear work by the master criminal Mister Freeze. At the same time, another millionaire, John McVee, undergoes one of Mr. Freeze's cryogenic treatments, hoping to have his lifespan greatly increased. As Freeze's treatment starts, McVee's body temperature lowers, his aging processes slows, but the end result is not a success. McVee's body survives, but his brain cells remain frozen, turning him into a living zombie, and is thus added to Freeze's servile "Cold Pack", a group of failed experiments commanded by Freeze. The whole purpose of these experimentations is to recreate his own accident in order to repeat the process on his newfound lover, Hildy, who is secretly planning to kill Freeze after he does so.
Batman tracks down Freeze in his headquarters, but is overcome by the Cold Pack and given the freeze-treatment. However, he has ripped out enough power cables beforehand to ensure that he does not get the full-power treatment, but he still pretends to become one of Freeze's failed experiments. Infatuated with Batman, Hildy starts speaking to the "Batman zombie" about her plans to eliminate Freeze and maybe then, she would save Batman. After listening to her confession, Freeze turns against her and Batman stops pretending to be a zombie to confront Freeze. Realizing that the other zombies obey Freeze's command through the helmet of his Cryo-Suit, Batman shatters Freeze's command-helmet and knocks him down, severing the regulating cable of his Ice Gun in the process. Hildy grabs the gun and fires at them, but the weapon backfires and she is encased in solid ice. Batman is finally able to capture Freeze and takes him to the authorities for the crimes he's committed. Elsewhere, S.T.A.R. Labs scientists bury the body of Mark Desmond, thinking they have killed him with a radiation treatment intended to normalize him. However, as they leave the Gotham Cemetery, huge hands break the surface of the grave.

I'm starting with Thunderbolts. Because I'm me, and no one should expect anything less at this point.
Tumblr media
WHY is Bucky Barnes in this after, well, EVERYTHING but especially his arc on TFATWS?
Bucky Barnes is no longer the Winter Soldier; he's making amends. Thunderbolts is a step in the opposite direction. By being a part of this team, however reluctant, Bucky literally aligns himself with John Walker — an insidious character he fought for 6 episodes.
How does that make sense? It would make MORE sense if Sharon Carter joined Thunderbolts after the TFATWS cliffhanger with her.
That aside, Yelena Belova leading this team is a wise decision.
It means more Florence Pugh in the MCU, and it's an exciting turn for her character since we haven't seen much of her in the modern day, post-Black Widow or post-Blip. We don't know what she does for Valentina besides the mission that leads her to Hawkeye and Kate.
That concept art makes me tear up a bit regarding Yelena because I need to know how she got her vest back from Natasha. Did Clint have it and give it to her? Did she get it back post-Blip but pre-Hawkeye? Basically, Yelena and Natasha are something so special to me, and I will take any and all crumbs I can get.
Alexei Shostakov works, Ava Starr works, and John Walker works.
As an avid fan of this character, I'm not convinced Bucky Barnes works — at least not with the path the MCU has given him thus far. Maybe something in Captain America 4 will signal the change in Bucky, but I hope it doesn't play as a complete regression.
This character deserves better than that.

SUBVERTING THE ROCK TRADITION IN THE SUPER SEVENTIES -- WHEN THE ART DIRECTION IS JUST AS CRUCIAL AS THE MUSIC ITSELF.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on the sleeve art and/or art direction for "First Issue," the debut album by English post-rock/post-punk band PUBLIC IMAGE LTD., released domestically in the UK in December 1978 under the Virgin label.
"The first PUBLIC IMAGE album is an all time fave, it’s a "Funhouse" album! Hard as nails, and a seriously, seriously industrial way of mixing, everything sounds like sledgehammers!
-- JOHN LYDON, JohnLydon.Com, c. 2005
"People never knew if we were serious or playing a joke on them. But we were serious. In "Fodderstompf" where Wobble says: "We are now trying to finish the album with a minimum amount of effort which we are now doing very suc-cess-ful-ly." It's what we were doing. We had this thing where we only gave the record company exactly the 30 minutes prescribed in the contract because those bastards ripped us off. Those guys played fucking hard ball."
-- KEITH LEVENE, "Perfect Sound Forever," 2001
"Low Life" and "Attack" were meant to be properly made songs but recorded in a basement dungeon of a demo track studio. No live drum sound everything done on the cheap. Appalling result. "Fodderstompf," the same sad sick story. Not even a song just a wank. Ripping off our fans. It still turns my stomach thinking about it…"
-- JIM WALKER (original PiL drummer), "Fodderstompf," 2001
Sleeve concept: Terry Jones, Dennis Morris
Design: Zebulon a Zebulon Production

Label: Virgin Records
Original Release: December 1978/12 inch analog LP

Comics this week?
Action Comics #1058 - Loved seeing Clark put some of Lex's toys to good use against his opponent. Superman is smart you guys! Glad that PKJ was able to canonize the House Mythos he's been talking about for ages before he leaves Action. Starchild is a great use of one of Clark's various "titles", not as crazy about Red Son but it does bestow a fantasy vibe that might fit Osul being a quasi-Jesus figure. Definitely the Empire of Shadows talking to Norah, man I'm excited to see Supes and the evil Batman clash, especially since Supes has his own suit of armor and sword! Neat how PKJ bookends his run with Supes being depowered yet again.
Detective Comics #1075 - Decided to drop this. It's not "bad" but it's not doing anything I haven't seen a million times before, might catch it in trade, and I still need to cut back.
Steelworks #5 - I love the contrast between the phasing guy being sympathetic and Walker (the AmerTek CEO) being an unrepentant piece of shit. Glad that Dorn brough up the iron of Irons bearing John Henry's name when JH fought against tech and progress while JHI has always tried to push it forward. both of them have to beat a machine however, in Irons case a full blown mecha.
Wonder Woman #2 - More of an art showcase for Sampere but goddamn what a beautiful showcase it is. I should have seen the reveal coming that the Amazon Diana beat in the contest to become WW in the first place was the same one who kickstarted the events of this one, but I was surprised! Where does Emelie figure into Sovereign's plans I wonder? Did he simply take advantage of what she did, or is she working for him? Good stuff with Sovereign saying he was drawn to Diana because like him she's a mix of myth, and that's probably as close as Wondy fans are going to get to the clay origin coming back until Gunn decides what to do with her.
Unstoppable Doom Patrol #7 - Excellent ending to the series which unfortunately is spoiled by the tease for S2 featuring the Batwoman Who Laughs. Look Culver I know you love Morrison, when Morrison calls you out on how stupid this idea was, maybe you should just accept the criticism and undo it. Only defense I can muster is that on Culver's Twitter he does say the goal is to save her via undoing the change at least, otherwise I really enjoyed this run.
The Flash #2 - Where was this Dedato for Hickman's Avengers? Could've used those crazy angles for when the Beyonders showed up. Laughed at the Grodd/God joke and looking forward to Spurrier writing Barry.
The Penguin #3 - Still good and since this is my last Batbook I hope it stays that way.
Immortal Thor #3 - By now it's clear this is merely a very good Thor comic rather than the masterpiece of Immortal Hulk, but that's still welcome. Same as Action, it's nice to see Thor use his brains as well as his brawn to solve problems, though I find Ewing's use of Loki underwhelming. It's clear his heart isn't into the idea of pitting the brothers against each other.

Review: Captain America Epic Collection 14: The Captain
Tumblr media
Some Really Great Plotting
I have always considered myself to be a big Cap fan, yet had only read the Brubaker and Remender runs, plus some of the Nick Spencer run and parts of the Silver Age material, so I really wanted to read more. Given that Mark Gruenwald’s run on the character is generally regarded as one of the high points of the title, I came into this volume with high expectations, and, for the most part, I wasn’t disappointed.
From the outset, it’s important to note that although Gruenwald was an excellent plotter, he was not a great writer of dialogue. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of Marvel continuity that he loved to incorporate into his stories, however, instead of using narration boxes to offer recaps, characters relate it to one another, and the result is always clunky. Gruenwald also has a great grasp on the characters, but they are all saddled with wooden dialogue at various points, especially Cap when he’s giving impromptu speeches. The Captain also includes Iron Man #228, and, to be honest, it creates an unflattering comparison for Gruenwald when you see how much better the dialogue is for the same characters when it’s written by David Micheline and Bob Layton. That said, the story in The Captain is so good that wooden dialogue can only weigh it down so much.
When the volume opens, Steve Rogers has just quit as Captain America after coming into conflict with the committee that oversees him. The first few issues are solely dedicated to establishing the new Captain (John Walker, formerly Super-Patriot). Only later does the title go back to Steve Rogers, who takes on the identity as the Captain in order to continue to help any way that he can.
I really like the way that Gruenwald writes John Walker. At first he’s dismissive of his predecessor, thinking that he’s an outdated relic, only to realize how difficult it is to fill those shoes. My understanding is that Walker is later written as psychotic, but here he’s a guy who is genuinely doing his best to live up the ideal but is temperamentally unsuited for it. His story becomes tragic rather than villainous as severe emotional trauma drives him over the edge and makes him more violent and excessive. Even his inevitable confrontation with Steve Rogers is not something that either of them wanted. That said, once the two lock up, the story really comes alive as they deliver haymaker after haymaker to each other.
Tumblr media
The extended storyline involving the Serpent Society was another highlight. The idea of a villains’ trade union, which faces internal conflict to the point where one side has to make a desperation call to their superhero antagonist, is very clever, and Gruenwald does a lot with it. I also like the idea of Diamondback being a romantic interest for Steve, which hits a lot of the same notes as Batman and Catwoman, but with a character who is even more of a paragon in his universe in Captain America. My only complaint was that I didn’t really get a feel for most of the individuals in the Serpent Society, but I also have yet to read any of Gruenwald’s run before or after this volume.
Tom Morgan and Kieron Dwyer split the art duties in this volume. Both of them are very meat-and-potatoes; the art is perfectly solid but it doesn’t stand out. It’s probably just as well, given that there are a few extremely violent moments in this volume, and I don’t know if a more graphic style would have added to them or taken away from them. I do wonder, however, if this arc would get more acclaim from casual readers if the art were more stylized. One of the advantages that Brubaker’s run has over Gruenwald’s is that the art was very striking with its moody color palettes and gritty feel.
Tumblr media
I’m quite curious to see where Gruenwald takes the title in the next volume. There’s only one (admittedly, major) dangling plot thread, so it will be interesting to see if he follows up on that immediately or starts a brand-new plot. As for this volume, it does live up to most of its hype, and it’s also a very easy entry point for anyone wanting to read some of the better Captain America comics.

Central Arcade Newcastle upon Tyne is full of architectural treasures, one of which is the Central Arcade, a stunning Edwardian shopping arcade built in 1906 within the Central Exchange, a triangular building built by Richard Grainger in 1836-1838 to the designs of John Wardle and George Walker. I’ve painted the outside of the building on many occasions as it appears in my paintings of Grey Street, Grainger Street and Market Street. Folk in Newcastle will best remember the Central Arcade as the home of J.G. Windows music. I recall going in to the basement to check out the latest rock music releases as a long haired Genesis fan many years ago! Back in 1993 I was commissioned to do an original watercolour of the Central Arcade in Newcastle. At the time, I was doing a series of paintings of Newcastle taken from ariel perspectives. The client had commissioned two other paintings along that theme and wanted the one of the arcade to be viewed from above too. This was a challenging task, as the Central Arcade is enclosed by a glass roof and there is no public access to the balcony that is on the first floor. I managed to persuade the caretaker at the time to allow me to climb through a small window from a room that overlooked the shopping area below, for me to be able to take some photographs. There’s nearly always somebody busking in the arcade but unfortunately on this occasion there wasn’t so a few days later I drew my son Oliver playing his violin on our driveway from an upstairs bedroom window to get the correct perspective. I was so pleased with the end result that I decided to reproduce the original watercolour as a limited edition print with only 250 in the edition. #centralarcade #centralarcadenewcastle #windowsnewcastle #architecture #arcadepaintings #watercolourpainting #violinist (at Alan Reed Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpW_PRGoNd0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Stranger on the Third Floor inhabits the creepier side of, shall we say horror-adjacent, film noir. In fact, some experts argue that it is the first example of that dark genre, later to be labeled film noir. It’s a nightmare-influenced murder mystery featuring Peter Lorre chewing on all the scenery he can. Boris Ingster directs Stranger on the Third Floor with all the style that feels as if it could have been an early Val Lewton production. Yup, it’s Hollywood expressionism, RKO-style. This film is worth the watch, even if only for two 7-minute scenes: the nightmare sequence and the interaction between The Stranger (Lorre) and Jane (Margaret Tallichet).
If you have the urge to view this early example of noir filmmaking (or is it “proto-noir?”), and decide for yourself if it is truly horror-adjacent, Stranger on the Third Floor is, at the time of this writing, available to stream from archive.org or PPV from iTunes. There is also a Warner Brothers DVD available if physical media is your preference.

Thunderbolts First Look Image Revealed All 7 members of MCU
Thunderbolts First Look Image Revealed All 7 members of MCU Thunderbolts First Look Image Revealed All 7 members of MCU  Thunderbolts First Look Image  The Thunderbolts team lineup has been revealed by Marvel. The MCU collaboration film will be directed by Jake Schreier (Robot & Frank) and written by Black Widow's Eric Pearson. Throughout the comics, the Thunderbolts have had a diverse cast of characters, often led by General Thunderbolt Ross aka Red Hulk. While the roster is constantly changing, the name remains consistent, serving as a temporary team for reformed villains and anti-heroes to take on missions that require their unique combination of skills. The Thunderbolts film was first announced at Comic-Con, with a release date of July 26, 2024. At the time, no casting or team members were announced, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige promising that more information would be released soon. The team's full roster has now been revealed, and it includes members from all corners of the MCU, including Ant-Man and the Wasp, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Black Widow. At D23, Feige revealed the Thunderbolts team's full lineup, which includes Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), US Agent (Wyatt Russell), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Taskmaster, all led by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss). All members appear in a piece of concept art shown to promote the team, dressed similarly to previous appearances, with Red Guardian having the most updated look of them all. Check out the cast photo and concept art below : MCU Thunderbolts All 7 members revealed  The actors in attendance commented on the upcoming film, which begins filming in 2023, with Stan saying, "These look like a good, troubled bunch and Bucky knows a thing or two about that." Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier was last seen in the Disney+ series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which left him seeking redemption for his past life as an assassin, while The Falcon moved on to the role of Captain America. US Agent/John Walker also made his debut in that series, while Yelena was most recently seen in the Disney+ series Hawkeye. Both Red Guardian and Taskmaster have previously only appeared in the Black Widow solo film, so Thunderbolts is their first appearance since. The Thunderbolts have always had a similar vibe to DC's Suicide Squad, though fans shouldn't expect an R-rated take on these characters in the MCU. Thunderbolts, on the other hand, are meant to be more edgy than the heroic Avengers teams, taking on missions that are a little outside the realm of the standard superhero world. While General Ross isn't shown (William Hurt, who played him in the MCU, died earlier this year), it's still possible that Red Hulk will appear in some capacity, whether through recasting or otherwise. Fans can now get excited about seeing some of their favourite characters unite under the Thunderbolts banner, even though no villain or threat was announced. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions. via Blogger https://ift.tt/YDxhlKX September 25, 2022 at 09:32AM

Alright let’s wrap up this cycle , Starting with the runway I’m not a super big fan of runway but I tried and made notes about there walks so starting with Olga
1 Olga - she look really good actually I thought she was the best walker of 3 she look confident and holds clothes really well her first walk was stellar she walk nicely and held her own the pink runway and feathers wasn’t as strong but still good
2 Kyveli - Kyveli did good on her 2nd walk in the pink outfit and the feathers but I really wasn’t a fan of her first walk she looked weak and the way she was walking I was afraid she might fall which I don’t think is really good for runway
3 Kosos - His walk was ok he never looked weak or struggled in any major areas I just don’t like his walk in general it’s very hippy and he sways his body a lot it makes sense for him but I think I would’ve like to see him tone it down
Liquor Ads
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before we start I will say the liquor ads where fucking wild it more or less looked like an editorial rather then an ad for a product with how much had to be done
1 Olga - I don’t think anyone did anything more then the other but I will say Olga In this ad just command attentions and I think she’s stunning she did everything well
2 Kosos - Kosos looked really cool I like his vibe In the commercial but him in it didn’t really make sense if I’m being honest he looked good and acted good is walking was actually toned down he might’ve done the best out of the 3 but for me his look was just kinda random
3 Kyveli - Again she did alright an all aspects of the brand she looks sleek and cool and edgy but her presence was just kinda timid in the commercial in moments where I felt you where suppose to leave an impression she just didn’t and do that so she lands in the bottom spot
Overall the winner was Kyveli !!!!!!!
I think she was definitely the number 1 choice for a winner she took a few weeks to get her stride but once she started she never stop being at the top and typically dominated the competition she was given the villain edit mainly because she wasn’t friends with most of them
Onto Kosos , Olga I would’ve rather Kosos win personally he was my number one pick to win when the cycle started and I’m glad he made it to too 3 but I do think he was a tad weaker then Kyveli and his 3 FCO where def given I think unfortunately to be “woke” as he I only agreed with His art photo being FCO his concert FCO they put him in a skirt and his photo was good but there was a lot better and the other one was his gender fluid photo it def wasn’t FCO it was def. Good but he was i more worthy of a runner up I think onto Olga I think she’s an odd choice for a runner up she very much was plain and stunning but I think this cycle theme was more about like a newer more unique kinds beauty which is why I think people like Ageos and Dino’s John and Styleanos where Eliminated because they where much more classic and why I think Napoleon was pushed so hard overall I really liked this cycle and I’m sad next cycle guys won’t be returning

I’m not an mcu fan. I’m an mcu fan fan. I reject canon, I’m just here for the memes and the fan art. Steve never left, Bucky is a proud gay jewish man, Shuri is given the appreciation she deserves and no one is dead unless I say so. Fuck John Walker
