A wildlife volunteer on an uninhabited island off the British coast descends into a terrifying madness that challenges her grip on reality and pushes her into a living nightmare. Evoking the feeling of discovering a reel of never-before-seen celluloid unspooling in a haunted movie palace, this provocative and masterful vision of horror asserts Mark Jenkin as one of the U.K.’s most exciting and singular filmmakers.

Enys Men (dir. Mark Jenkin).
Jenkin’s experimental folk horror film shot on 16mm is a grounded yet surreal tale of loss and unending grief. Set in 1973 on an abandoned island off the Cornish coast, a solitary wildlife volunteer’s everyday observations of a rare flower morph into a strange metaphysical journey that bends into a nightmarish reality. It’s certainly a trippy experience heightened by its artfully hypnotic visuals. The whole island stands in as a grim monument to grieving.
Screening at the VIFF Centre until Apr. 7 and the Rio Theatre on Apr. 12 & 15.
