I know some other people have said this but that apartment fight was just the most horrifying spectacle. In some ways, it actually reminded me of Gamora and her sister from Guardians of the Galaxy. Their father forced them to fight each other for dominance and the one who lost would suffer the consequences. While what happened between Miguel and Robby is obviously not the same, it does give me those vibes.
First off, Johnny continuously lies to both Robby and Miguel to get them to become friends despite both of them making it clear that they have no desire to do so. Robby even says that Johnny and Miguel can have their thing and he’s just not interested. Rather than respecting Robby’s wishes, Johnny forces them into a fight to “sort out their issues.” When you take into account how Johnny has treated Robby throughout the show, it actually makes the fight even more sickening. From the start, Johnny has always pinned Robby and Miguel’s rivalry on Robby. Despite Robby being his son, he has never once even bothered to even think about the possibility that Robby is not the one responsible for the whole thing. He never once even considers that Miguel could be the one to blame. He has no problem accusing Robby of starting fights in juvie despite having no way of knowing what actually happened. He saw his son (whom he’d already hurt by failing to show up on a visit that HE scheduled) with a gigantic bruise on his face and immediately accused him of starting a fight. Then when he and Robby speak about the school fight (when Robby yet again is one to reach out to Johnny) and Robby makes an attempt to defend himself, Johnny immediately shuts him down despite having been the one to bring the subject up by saying that he wasn’t there. Then in s5, Johnny really goes above and beyond and drags Robby to Mexico by lying to him about why they were going. He actively puts Robby in danger simply by even taking him to Mexico in the first place and then gets into one bad situation after another. It was Robby who had to jump in to help Johnny fight off they guys trying to steal from him. It was Robby who had to bail Johnny out and get him the money to get the van back. All Johnny did during this time was stand around making stupid comments and annoying people. Then when he gets the phone call from Carmen, he tells her that she shouldn’t be putting herself in danger as Robby sits there and listens. You can see in Robby’s face how much that hurts him. Johnny was more worried about the safety of his girlfriend who is a grown woman and whose son it was that they were looking for to begin with than he was about the safety of the son that he has already hurt and abandoned countless times and was actively putting in danger just by bringing him along on a trip he didn’t even want to go to. Then after all that, when they find Miguel, Johnny rushes to him an sweeps him up in a hug that makes the one he had with Robby at the end of s4 pale in comparison.
Now after all this, when both boys have made it clear they are not interested in being friends, Johnny is still too wrapped up in thinking about what he wants that he just keeps on ignoring that. So instead of dealing with it like a responsible parent/mentor, he twist a drunk and upset Daniel’s words and makes the boys physically fight things out. Aside from the fact that making two kids physically fight each other is abusive in general, as some others have pointed out, this fight was never meant to benefit Robby to begin with. By making Miguel and Robby fight each other, Johnny was quite literally offering Robby up on a silver platter to Miguel. Think back to Miguel’s words to Sam at the first avt, Miguel told Sam to just wait and watch what he does to Robby. So Miguel’s desire to hurt Robby didn’t just start after the school fight. No, it started right from the moment he met Robby at that party. He attacked Robby before he’d even said two words to him and then made it very clear that he wanted to hurt him badly during the avt. Which is exactly what he did. The way we are shown the school fight in the flashbacks makes it seem as though it is entirely from Miguel’s perspective. Which means that it neglects to show how it was Miguel who attacked Robby first and then kept on attacking him until Robby had no choice to fight back. It neglects to show how Miguel literally had Robby face down on the ground in pain as he twisted his arm behind his back. So from the start, the only person this fight could have ever benefitted is Miguel. For the first time, Miguel actually got to hurt Robby as much as he wanted to and he got to do it with Johnny’s permission.
Johnny could have stopped the fight the second Miguel kicked Robby in the face and made him bleed. Instead he just stood there and let it happen. Funnily enough, it wasn’t until Robby started getting a bit more aggressive that Johnny made so much as a remark to get them to stop. Even then, as Miguel kept beating the absolute crap out of Robby and Robby was limp in Miguel’s grip as Miguel held him up against the railing, Johnny didn’t stop it. He could have easily rushed in and pulled Miguel off at any point instead he just stood there yelling and waving his arms. He didn’t even step in until after Miguel and Robby talked and Robby took all the blame for the fight while Miguel stood there and pretended to be some saintly hero who was being oh so generous by accepting Robby’s apology while not offering a single word of apology himself. Then of course Johnny revealed that news and you can see in Robby’s face the moment he just shuts down completely. After having just been beaten almost to a pulp by his father’s student during a fight his father arranged, he understands now that the only way to gain a place in Johnny’s life is to do whatever Johnny wants him to do and make nice with Miguel. It is in that moment that Robby finds himself well and truly trapped in the role that we see him playing for the rest of this season. Johnny has made it clear that Robby’s life means very little to him compared to the life Johnny has with the Diazes and the only way for Robby to gain acceptance is to essentially kneel at their feet and be their emotional (or even physical if need be) punching bag. Johnny has treated Robby horrifically throughout the show but in this season he has gone above and beyond and has escalated to actually abusing Robby. I’ve said before that while Johnny may well “love” Robby in the way that parents naturally love their children, he very clearly doesn’t love or even really like Robby as a person at all and that is not in any way Robby’s fault at all. No, it is 100% Johnny’s fault yet it’s Robby who keeps paying the price

"The Title That's Given To You"
Here's an excerpt from my rewrite of the Johnny/Robby arc from the end of Season 3 to the end of Season 4
Scene- Slight rewrite. Season 3 finale confrontation between Johnny and Robby at Cobra Kai dojo. Johnny: You don't understand. You can't trust him!
Robby: And I can trust you?
Johnny: Robby please listen to me-
Robby: Sensei Kreese has shown more concern for me in the last week than you have in 16 goddamn years. Why should I trust you?
Johnny: (pleading) You can’t be around this man Robby it's not safe-
Robby: You suddenly care about my safety? I was gone for two weeks and all you did was get drunk. I could've been dead in a gutter somewhere and you didn’t give a shit. (Robby begins to shove Johnny. With each statement he shoves Johnny more and more aggressively. Johnny doesn’t retaliate. Robby’s rage builds to the point in which he is yelling)  I was getting my face kicked in every day in juvie and all you cared about was Miguel. I was so stupid to think that maybe this time you’d show up for me. Why did you come back in my life if you were just gonna leave me again? Why? (during this we see a shot of Kreese. He has regained consciousness. A smile spreads across his face. The seed has been planted) Johnny: Robby…that’s not true… Robby: No. You don’t get to hurt me again. Not again. This time I’m gonna hurt you. (Robby attacks Johnny and the fight from the season 3 finale ensues)
(Scene Daniel, Johnny, Miguel and Sam facing Kreese outside of the dojo. This is right after they make their agreement with the tournament. Robby enters holding his head. Johnny comes toward him)
Johnny: Robby! Are you okay? I didn’t mean to hurt you (Robby takes a step back away from Johnny. Kreese puts a protective arm around him)
Kreese: You alright son? (Johnny explodes with rage. He grabs Kreese by the collar of his shirt)
Johnny: You son of a bitch. You goddamn piece of shit I’ll kill you. I swear to god I’ll kill you. I’ll take one of those knives off the wall and gut you and make sure you bleed out and gladly go to jail. I’ll fucking end you. What kind of sick twisted game are you trying to play? You kidnap my son? You try to brainwash my son? (Daniel attempts to hold Johnny back) Daniel: Johnny c’mon don’t make things worse. Kreese: (oddly calm) I didn't kidnap him. I'm not holding him hostage. The boy came to me.  He asked for a place to stay until he can be with his mother and I'm providing that. He's been through a lot lately. It seemed like he had no one else to turn to (Johnny lets go of Kreese’s shirt collar) Daniel: Robby…you’re not living here are you? (Robby shrugs) Daniel: Robby, I told you, you can stay at our place Robby: Why? So you can toss me out again?  I’m fine right where I am Johnny: No you’re not. There is no way in hell you are staying here Robby. Just get in the car and we can talk about this later Robby: You have no right to order me around. Johnny: I’m your goddamn father of course I have the right. Kreese: You aren’t his legal guardian. He doesn’t even bear your name. Johnny: (to Kreese) YOU SHUT THE HELL UP! (to Robby) You do a lot of dumb shit to spite me kid but this really takes the cake. You’re not staying here. If I have to get you out of here by force I’ll do it Robby: Are you threatening me? Johnny: Robby! I’m not- Daniel: Johnny….easy let’s just stay calm. I’ll call the police Robby: That’s your favorite thing to do isn’t it? (Daniel sighs helplessly)
Johnny: Fine. Call them! Tell them my son straight out of juvie is throwing a goddamn temper tantrum and staying with a psycho
Daniel: Johnny!
Robby: If either of you try anything like that I’ll run away again. You’ll never see me again. Not that you even gave a shit before.
Kreese: No need son. Let them call. By all means Johnny. Call the police. And we can show them the nasty gash on your son’s head from when you threw him into those lockers. Right after you and your little friend here broke into my place of business and tried to kill me. That doesn’t look great next to your latest arrest from another one of your petty barroom brawls. I’m not the one with the criminal record here. Any one would take one look at you and throw Robby in foster care. I guess that’s what you’ve always wanted for him right? Father of the year. I think you’ve done enough now.
(Johnny looks sick taking in what Kreese says. He feels powerless)
Johnny: Robby (helplessly) Please. Please don’t do this (he puts his hand on Robby’s shoulder. Robby immediately shrugs him off and takes a step back)
Robby: Don’t touch me. Don’t go near me. Don’t talk to me. Ever again. I’m done. I mean it, Johnny.
(Johnny’s eyes fill with tears. He looks like the wind has been knocked out of him. Out of all the names Robby has called him…this one hurts the most)
(Johnny turns and leaves)(Robby has a microsecond of regret on his face before:)
Miguel: Sensei?
(Miguel goes after Johnny. Robby’s expression turns back into disgust and hatred)
Daniel: Robby….
Robby: That goes for you too. For both of you.
(Daniel takes one last helpless look at Robby. Sam nudges her father gently to leave with her. They exit. Robby watches them go and Kreese puts his arm around him again)
End scene.

I was expecting it, but I wasn't prepared for just how chaotic Johnny and Robby's Mexico trip would be 😂

Drabble prompt Hangle With Care for @allvalley100
‘No, dad! That way!’
‘What way?’ Johnny asked from behind the large, new flat screen.
‘That way!’
Robby grabbed the corner, pulling it towards the newly hung stand.
‘Wait, Robby! No! Wait!’
Johnny’s hand slipped as his son pulled and he dropped it. The corner of the screen hit the floor with a ugly crunch. Father and son looked at each other and looked at the crack in their brand new TV. Robby huffed with annoyance and Johnny shrugged and grinned sheepishly.
‘It’s OK. We’ll take it back, just tell the store it was like that when we bought it.’

I’ve binge read your completed cobra Kai fics on AO3 and I just want to say you have an amazing gift and I am literally gonna go back and reread them now even tho I only finished yesterday! If you’re gonna write any more Robby-Johnny centered fics especially now that the newest season is out with the addition of a new baby, I would literally be the first reader!
Thank you for making my week better ❤️
Aww thank you so much!

Robby and Johnny really caught my attention. In this dumb karate soap opera, what those two had going on was genuinely riveting for me. I felt properly inspired. I really wanted them to have a better relationship and when the show wouldn't give it to me, I wrote it myself. I'm super fond of Good Boy and No Be There as writing projects.
But daaayyum, the babyplot in season 5 kinda killed my inspiration stone-dead.
I have an idea to re-write the way Robby and Johnny and Miguel work through their issues without the babyplot, simmilar to what I did with No Be There after season 4. I'd take the plot beats of the season 5 but re-work it to be more emotionally satisfying.
(I'd also like to re-introduce the continuity fairy, because the idea that Robby has healthy, well-adjusted grandparents that he normally spends the summer with going fishing and hiking was just thrown out there with no explanation this season, all to service the babyplot???? so, like, I want to be consistent with what has been established as canon prior to that).
So yeah, that's an idea I've been tossing around in my head, and hopefully I'll write it. But it's a bit of a struggle atm because the babyplot did Robby and Johnny so dirty - but in a way that sapped all the narrative tension out of their relationship. Lack of narrative payoff is a bit of an inspiration killer for me.
So I can't make you any promises, but I do have some ideas.

Johnny gets a call telling him to come into the station on his day off and what he finds waiting for him is the last thing he ever would’ve expected.
His whole life changes in a day and despite the terrible circumstances he’s determined to make the most of his new situation and ensure Robby is safe and happy for the rest of his life.
He might not have got everything right in the beginning but with Daniel’s help he’s determined to do better.

"Message Five. August 21st, at 2:15AM.”
Beep.
Johnny jammed his finger down and hit another button, but the final message began playing anyways. At first there was nothing but what sounded like Shannon crying. Johnny was starting to suspect that maybe something really was wrong, when Shannon started talking.
"J-Johnny… I didn't want to talk about this over voicemail, but you aren't really giving me a choice. I found out yesterday that I have Breast Cancer." There was a pause.
"I-I'm dying, Johnny. Please call me. We need to talk about what's going to happen to our son."
Beep.
When Shannon is diagnosed with cancer, Johnny decides to step back into eight-year-old Robby’s life. As if learning how to be a dad isn’t hard enough, Robby’s new best friend is Sam LaRusso, the daughter of Johnny’s greatest enemy. Darkness Knocks On Your Door is a story of recovery, self discovery, fatherhood, fighting cancer, and building a family, with some wholesome LawRusso on the side.

You know, the more I think about it, the more it doesn't surprise me at all that Johnny's version of the events leading up to this season make Robby out to be the unreasonable kid who didn't let anyone help him. Johnny is the type of person who will blame everyone else before himself and we already know he had a tendency to alter the truth to make himself look better. He even does this in his own mind. He did this for decades with his rivalry with Daniel. He actually managed to convince himself that he was the victim in that scenario. That Daniel "stole" his girlfriend when Ali was already very interested in Daniel from the first time they met and Johnny behaved like a jackass the whole time. The in Cobra Kai, his entire guilt about Robby is rooted in his own feelings rather than guilt for causing his son pain. So it's actually no surprise at all that his version of what happened when Robby was on the run is very different from what actually happened. I wouldn't be one but surprised if in Johnny's mind, he really does think that he made a real effort to look for Robby and is actually not even thinking about how he had to be guilted into it by Daniel and how he bailed almost immediately. So when he says this to Robby, he's only thinking of himself and not the actual truth nor is he thinking about Robby but that's a given with Johnny anyway. I did think it was retconning when I saw the spoiler but having watched the whole season and taking the context of the whole show into consideration, it's actually pretty consistent with Johnny's character. He's always bent the truth into what's convenient for him and in their scene he is outright using it against Robby. He makes Robby feel as though he should be the to feel guilty for not accepting Johnny's help when the simple truth of the matter is that Johnny just did not do anything to help him at all. Hell on the occasions that Robby did approach Johnny, Johnny was still so wrapped up in himself that he completely ignored what Robby was saying to him. And when Robby challenged him, he simply retreated into himself again. For example, when Robby came to Johnny in s4 about Hawk, yes Robby said he didn't plan on staying but Johnny could've at the very least insisted that Robby come in. Instead, he took the opportunity he had and turned it around onto Robby and started going on about Kreese. And then when Robby pushed back, he straight up told him that he was busy and if there was nothing else then Robby should leave. Funny how Johnny apparently doesn't remember any of that right? And it actually works out really well for Johnny bc Robby has always been all too willing to put the blame onto himself for everything. We can see how hearing Johnny's version of how they went looking for him affects him. Johnny himself remains as indifferent to Robby as always. He says "look I'm sorry" as though it's an inconvenience he needs to get out of the way so he can get down to business. In this scene alone, he told Robby a half-baked version of the truth (if not a total lie) and made Robby feel guilty then acted like the very act of talking to Robby was an inconvenience for him. We can see Robby changing himself right from that moment actually to fit into what Johnny wants. Now that Johnny has made him feel guilty about something that he absolutely should not be feeling guilty about at all, he feels the need to ingratiate himself to Johnny. He recognizes that Johnny's barely even interested in talking to him the way he was behaving before (even though Robby's behavior was 100% reasonable" and so changes his behavior to fit what Johnny would want. Regardless of whether Johnny realizes it or not, through that conversation alone, he sparked a fear in Robby's heart that went on to get even worse as the season progressed. To the point that Robby in this entire season became nothing more than a doormat to be used at everybody else's convenience
