John Singer Sargent 1856-1925 “Elizabeth Winthrop Chanler”(Mrs. John Jay Chapman) 1893 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by @robertpuffjr According to the artist, twenty-six-year-old Elizabeth Chanler had "the face of the Madonna and the eyes of a child." This portrait shows a beautiful, well-bred woman who has learned to be strong. When Elizabeth was still a girl, her mother died, leaving her to help care for seven younger brothers and sisters. Sargenrhas portrayed her in the elegant interior of his London studios decorated with two paintings that frame the circumstances of Elizabeth's life: a Madonna and Child, and a figure of an old woman copied from a portrait by Frans Hals. Perhaps the artist wished to show Elizabeth as a woman who, despite early hardships, was neither maiden nor matron. Sargent was often dismissed by his contemporaries as a "society portraitist," but his paintings never fail to convey the human story behind the image. The loggia at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Miami, Florida. Vizcaya is an early 19th century palatial Villa constructed in the Mediterranean Revival architectural style, for the American businessman James Deering. The Villa and gardens were influenced by the the regions of Veneto and Tuscany, and this is nowhere more noticeable than in Vizcaya’s impressive Italian Renaissance gardens. Today the Villa is open as a museum consisting of 70 rooms, each with distinctive architectural interiors, decorative arts, lavish furnishings and artwork. Thanks again to @scenicviewacademy for letting me camp out in the Art Room all evening to work on this. I think this was another 1.5 hours? I did my best to try and refine the background a little more. I sketched in the piano and the whatever-it-is clock/decoration thing on the wall, and tried to get the gradient right for where the wall itself is a little more visible. Tried to push the window, rug-thing, and the sunlight on the floor a little further, too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s interesting—this is my first time doing oil paints on hardboard, and it dries to such a SMOOTH finish. It was really easy to wipe off spots where didn’t get the silhouette right, or where I went a little out of bounds, or something like that. I was using left-over colors from last time, so the color matching was a little weird, but I use a medium that helps decrease the open time, so I think I can get away with glazing to nudge the colors a bit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Next time, I’m going to sit down and premix some colors to see if I can get the background exactly how I want it. Or, one step closer, at least. I think I want to let things dry between getting the window and the sunspot locked in and working on the little dainty chair/table/urn setup that’s going on in the background. Probably my experience with digital painting a layers rearing up.
