There was a time when Prabowo Subianto's name would have spooked most Indonesians.
But now young voters appear to be charmed by the defence minister's slick makeover. The fiery ex-special forces commander dogged by allegations of human rights abuses and disappearances has become a cute grandfather made for memes.
"He is much older, but he is able to embrace my generation," says a 25-year-old supporter of his, Albert Joshua.
Now 72, Mr Prabowo is running to succeed the popular Joko Widodo when the world's third-largest democracy votes on 14 February. He is promising more of the stability and economic development Mr Widodo, or Jokowi as he is better known, pushed during his decade in power.
So far the polls put Mr Prabowo ahead of his younger rivals, Ganjar Pranowo and Anies Baswedan. Both men are in their 50s and have experience running key Indonesian provinces as governors. Job security, infrastructure and a bigger diplomatic role for Indonesia dominate their campaigns.
Mr Prabowo's running mate is Mr Widodo's eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka. It's a choice that many see as a tacit blessing by the president, who is yet to endorse anyone, including his own party's candidate, Mr Pranowo.
But a Prabowo presidency is also alarming to many, who say he has never been held accountable for the alleged abduction and killing of pro-democracy student activists decades ago.
A young voter, who did not wish to be named, says she is "terrified" he will win: "If he could be an accomplice of silencing voices then he will be silencing those voices now if he gets elected."
"Cuteness" hardly makes an eligible leader, she says. "If that's how you think a leader should be, then you should elect kittens."
Indonesia's cat-loving 'gemoy squad'
Cats are also a part of Mr Prabowo's social media campaign. His brown and white stray, Bobby, has his own well-curated Instagram account that describes him as a "patriot".
Then there are the TikTok videos of Mr Prabowo doing his signature move - an awkward shuffle across the stage - or shooting hearts at the audience. The gushing response has dubbed him "gemoy", a moniker for all things cuddly and adorable. His young supporters call themselves the "gemoy squad".
Social media has been the cornerstone of his outreach. Millennials and Gen Z make up more than half of Indonesia's 205 million eligible voters - they also account for many of the 167 million Indonesians who use social media.
Mr Prabowo's official Facebook and affiliated accounts spent $144,000 in advertising over the past three months, according to Meta's data. That's almost double Mr Pranowo's spend, and triple that of Mr Baswedan.
"I rarely see Prabowo's real picture anymore," said Yoes C Kenawas, a research fellow at Atma Jaya University.
Instead the internet, drawing rooms and streets are filled with posters of Mr Prabowo as a chubby cartoon character. This new "avatar... is all over Indonesia", Mr Kenawas says. "That's how they're softening his image. And so far, it's pretty successful."
A spokesperson for Mr Prabowo's campaign said they were just trying to attract young people through a "fun" campaign: "Politics can be conveyed through different methods... that's not a bad thing," Dedek Prayudi told the BBC.
Gen Z voter Rahayu Sartika Dewi says she is drawn to Mr Prabowo's plans to develop the renewable energy and farming sectors. She calls the campaign "very cute, fun and approachable... not too heavy like in previous years".
Mr Prabowo ran for president, and lost, in 2014 and 2019. But this campaign has been remarkably different.
"The logic is that Prabowo's losses were, at least in part, because his strongman image and firebrand style alienated parts of the electorate," says Dr Eve Warburton, director of the Australia National University's Indonesia Institute.
Mr Prabowo is also targeting a generation that has no memory of the time when he rose to the peak of his power. That happened during the dictatorship of General Suharto, who was forced from office in 1998. His 32-year reign, which many Indonesians credit with modernising the country, was also a time of brutal repression and bloodshed.
Twenty-five years on, young voters say they would rather judge Mr Prabowo on how he tackles unemployment and cost of living. He has promised to create 19 million new jobs over the next five years.
"I know activists are still speaking out... but we have to move on," Mr Joshua says.
Mr Prabowo's campaign has denied the allegations, although he was dismissed from the military for his alleged role in the activists' disappearance. In 2014 he told Al Jazeera that he had ordered their kidnapping but had only done so on the orders of superiors.
In recent months videos have been showing up of people in tears, expressing their sympathy for him, claiming he had been "victimised by his opponents". They often feature young people, and some election watchers doubt if these are genuine supporters.
Ms Dewi says his presidential nomination is "proof" that he has shaken off the allegations.
An extraordinary comeback
Mr Prabowo was born into a wealthy political family, the son of a renowned economist who served in the Indonesian cabinet.
He followed his father who left the country in 1957 under a cloud of controversy, and spent a decade of his childhood in exile in Europe.
After returning home, he joined the army and quickly moved up the ranks to become the captain of Indonesia's elite special forces, the Kopassus.
By then he had already been accused of human rights violations in restive East Timor, where he had served as a member of the unit. His exact role in the military operations in East Timor that claimed hundreds of lives has never been proven and he denies the allegations. But the murky blot on his career has stayed.
He married one of Suharto's daughters and remained in the dictator's inner circle. As Suharto's reign crumbled in the late 1990s, the Kopassus was accused of kidnapping more than 20 student activists who opposed the regime. At least a dozen of them are still missing and feared dead. Those who survived have alleged torture.
Mr Prabowo was discharged from the military, went into self-imposed exile in Jordan, made it onto a blacklist in Australia and was banned from travelling to the United States.
But he made a comeback in 2019, when Mr Widodo appointed him as his defence minister, turning the rivals into allies. The surprise move followed a bitter election win - Mr Prabowo blamed his loss on cheating - and violent protests that left eight people dead.
"How can we expect justice if the perpetrator becomes the president?" asks Suciwati, the widow of a prominent human rights lawyer. Munir Said Thalib spent much of his life investigating the 1998 disappearances. He was assassinated in 2004 on a flight. The pilot was found guilty, but Suciwati does not believe that is the full story.
Prabowo's presidency "would be an extraordinary defeat for us, the families of victims, and human rights activists", she says.
Mr Widodo's support has helped restore Mr Prabowo's image, some say. Social media is "not enough", Mr Kenawas adds, and "how the state machineries have supported his campaign... should not be underestimated".
Many point to his running mate and Mr Widodo's son, Mr Gibran. A constitutional court, where Mr Widodo's brother-in-law serves as chief justice, controversially cleared the way for the 36-year-old to run for vice-president - Indonesian law requires him to be older.
What also worries many is a return of the "old Prabowo", known for his hot temper and volatile personality.
Dr Warburton says some of his recent public appearances had hints of that.
"No-one knows how Prabowo will govern," she says. "He may be a very hands-off president most interested in the prestige and pomp of office; but most who know him well emphasise his unpredictable personality. And that's never good for governance."

FF-Ideen. Mal wieder.
Egal. Hauptsache gegeneinander. Oder so.
Expeditionsschiff - Klaas, die Tiefseefische und - Joko.
Landschaftsgärtner-Klaas - Muss Jokos toten Rasen retten. Immer wieder. Aber ihm soll’s recht sein.
Vegas, Baby - Huch. Verheiratet. Einfach so. Na so ein Mist aber auch.
Sportlehrer-Klaas - Golf? Tennis? Ski?
Traut euch!

[SCMP is Hong Kong Private Media]
Indonesia’s long-drawn-out presidential election process has officially entered its final stages, with some of the country’s biggest political names formally submitting their nomination papers and launching their policy platforms.
Ahead of the opening of the nomination process, much of the national intrigue involved the identity of the running mate for Prabowo Subianto, current President Joko Widodo’s former rival-turned-ally. As long speculated, the 72-year-old defence minister revealed last weekend that his running mate would be Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Widodo’s 36-year-old son and mayor of the city of Solo.
Speculation has also swirled around who would get the outgoing president’s stamp of approval: Prabowo or former Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo. Pranowo, 54, leads the ticket for Widodo’s ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, alongside his vice-presidential candidate Mohammad Mahfud, 66, the outgoing coordinating minister of political, legal and security affairs.
Rounding out the list of candidates is Anies Baswedan – like Widodo, a former governor of Jakarta – and Muhaimin Iskandar, 57, deputy speaker of the House of Representatives. Supported by a coalition of parties named the Coalition of Change for Unity, the 54-year-old Anies has styled himself as the antithesis of Widodo, who is constitutionally barred from running for a third term.[...]
All three candidates have vowed to maintain Indonesia’s long-standing commitment to a neutral and non-aligned foreign policy, while also being active on the international stage to champion world peace – including by advocating for Palestinians amid the ongoing Israel-Gaza war, with Prabowo going the furthest in this regard by saying he would push to open an Indonesian consulate in Palestinian territory if elected.[...]
“Anies and Muhaimin will tend to be more critical of China in terms of maritime territorial integrity,” said Ahmad Rizky, an associate lecturer and researcher at the University of Queensland’s School of Political Science and International Studies in Australia. “But I am not sure that Anies will eliminate the engagement with China that Jokowi has been doing so far.”
Anies, who has trailed in opinion polls in recent months, said in his manifesto that he aims to “position Indonesia as a balancing force in the global order” so that the country can “prevent the domination of certain powers”, which Ahmad interpreted as a criticism of China’s rising assertiveness.
Prabowo [...] has been the most explicit when it comes to addressing fraught geopolitics, underlining that a major strategic challenge for Indonesia would be “rivalry between the two superpowers over Taiwan that could threaten the smooth supply chain of food, energy and trade” that passes through the Malacca Strait and North Natuna Sea.
The former special forces commander, who is making a third tilt at the presidency having twice lost to Widodo in 2014 and 2019, has pledged to “restore Indonesia’s foreign political authority as a large and sovereign country in the eyes of the international community”.
Twice last month, Prabowo made speeches warning against foreign influence, telling an audience of students at Muhammadiyah University in Malang, East Java on September 27 about Indonesia’s long history of colonisation and exploitation, and cautioning that the country should never again become “a puppet” of outsiders.
In another speech just a few days later, [Prabowo] again warned Indonesians not to become “the playthings of major powers” who “clearly set forth a strategy of divide and conquer”.
In past elections, [Prabowo,] the former son-in-law of late strongman president Suharto [and son of a major state economist in the Suharto government] had held the establishment responsible for society’s ills, but [an analyst] said this tactic would no longer work, as Prabowo was stripped of his opposition credentials when Widodo made him defence minister in 2019.[...]
“He wants Indonesia to engage with all major powers, not just the US and China,” Ahmad said, adding that the outgoing defence chief would “want Indonesia to play a bigger role outside of the context of [ASEAN] regionalism” and also “change his stance to no longer being anti-China”.
“He would want to encourage stronger engagement with China, something that he has already done in a diplomatic and defence context,” Ahmad said, further predicting that “Prabowo could tend to be closer militarily to the US”.[...]
[Prabowo] has led efforts to overhaul Indonesia’s ageing air fleet – mainly US-made F-16 and Russian Sukhoi Su-27 and Su-30 jets – securing a deal in February to order 42 Dassault Rafale fighter jets from France for US$8.1 billion; confirming in June the purchase of 12 Mirage 2000-5 jets previously used by Qatar for US$800 million; and in August signing a deal with Boeing for 24 F-15EX aircraft, the most advanced version of the US company’s F-15 jet, for an undisclosed amount.
Anies and Ganjar have likewise committed to modernising Indonesia’s military, with the former focusing in his manifesto on upgrading the country’s coastguard and protection of outlying islands.
Ganjar, meanwhile, outlines in his campaign manifesto Towards a Superior Indonesia a plan to introduce anti-access and area denial weapons and strategies – which can span missiles, electronic warfare, mines, aircraft and coastal artillery – “to secure territorial sovereignty and the implementation of sovereign rights” in the country’s exclusive economic zone.[...]
Ganjar was essentially signalling that the US and China should “not use Indonesian waters for their military interest” [according to an analyst][...]
All candidates have said they would uphold Widodo’s flagship “downstreaming” policy, whereby exports of critical raw minerals such as nickel are banned and producers are required to build refining facilities onshore, with Prabowo even vowing to widen it further to include “copper, tin, agriculture products and maritime products”.
Yet Sulfikar Amir, an industry, innovation, and technology spokesman for Anies’ campaign, said under his candidate “there will be a ban on commodity exports, but it will not repeat the current downstreaming order”.
As it stands, downstreaming “basically gives away our materials to foreign investors who come to build processing facilities in Indonesia and ultimately export them,” [Sulfikar] said. “Ultimately the ones who enjoy the [added] values are foreign investors.”[...]
The spokesman added that Anies would also not prioritise another of Widodo’s big-ticket projects: moving the country’s capital away from Jakarta to the new city of Nusantara being built on the island of Borneo.[...]
Ganjar, by contrast, said he aims to complete the new capital’s construction if elected, calling it “a symbol of futuristic Indonesia”.[...]
Anies took a stronger line, openly criticising Widodo’s dealings with foreign investors, particularly within the context of the Belt and Road Initiative and other multilateral economic forums.[...]
Belt and road projects offer “benefits for Indonesia, we cannot deny it,” Sulfikar [Anies’ campaign spokesman] said. “But the scheme and relationship between Indonesia and [the initiative] needs to be reviewed so that we would not deeply depend on [Chinese investments] that could harm Indonesia in the long term.”
“Look at the [Jakarta-Bandung] fast train [project]. Indonesia has to go into debt because the project is delayed. So everything [agreed under the belt and road] will be reviewed.”

Cards Against Humanity - J&K Style
Be ready. Und Florida, stay out, thx.)

i really wanted to send you an oc ask back since you sent me one, but i sadly do not know your folks enough to do the ask game (though i hope to eventually!!)—so i’ll instead ask: what’s the funniest story about one of your folks you can think of? or most chaotic story. either one’s fair game :) @kerra-and-company
Tumblr media
I feel like everything about Keelin is unintentionally chaotic or funny.
She met the sylvari Commander, Mavelle, while she was repeatedly shooting Bercilak in his "unkillable" magic armor while insisting, “He'll run out of lives before I run out of bullets.”
Says “Thank fucking Mordremoth for that” as her equivalent of saying, “Thanks, I hate it.” or “This situation is so awful, I kinda wish the jungle dragon had won so I wouldn’t have to be here”.
She booby-traps her workspace, Home Alone style, and basically has to contort her way into and out of it.
Only agreed to help the Commanders because she thought the charr Commander, Damaris, was hot.
Steals works of art from the jerks the Commanders' stomp. She absolutely has the portrait of Logan Thackeray from Caudecus's Manor.
Has a knack for imitating other people's voices. A skill that she usually only utilizes for mockery. It's also the only reason she survived being captured by Joko. He got a kick outta hearing her imitation of the human Commander, Esme, telling him he was the perfectest boy or whatever dumb shit he wanted to hear.

4. Es ist derselbe Ring, den Klaas trägt. Dazu müsste man Klaas ab jetzt ohne sehen.

Review carefully: the charm and meaning behind the chosen work of Denny Ja 60: I wait in each kamisan
In the world of Indonesian literature, Denny Ja is known as one of the writers who have extraordinary talent. One of his latest works entitled "I Wait in Every Kamisan" managed to attract the attention of the readers with the charm and meaning contained in it. In this article, we will review carefully about the charm and meaning hidden behind the selected Denny JA 60: I wait in each kamisan. Denny JA 60: I Waiting for Each Kamisan is an essay poem that tells about the life journey of a job seeker named Joko. Through this main character, Denny JA succeeded in delivering in-depth messages about life, hope, and struggle. One of the main charms of this essay poem is Denny Ja's writing style which is very typical. He uses a simple language but is quite hit to convey a deep meaning. In each of his writings, Denny Ja is able to describe the situation and character in great detail, so that the reader can feel and get involved in the story. In addition, the use of symbolic elements is also one of the attractions of this work. Denny Ja includes small symbols that make the story deeper and meaningful. For example, the use of Thursday as an important moment in the story gives meaning that expectations and changes can come at any time, as long as we are patient and keep struggling. In addition, this essay poem also contains a message about social injustice that still occurs in our society. Denny Ja described Joko's life full of difficulties and pressure in finding work. This reflects the real situation that is experienced by most of the people of Indonesia. In this essay poem, Denny Ja also succeeded in describing various characters very deeply. Each character has their own background and problems, but overall, they are interrelated and provide their own colors in the story. This shows Denny Ja's ability to explore and describe the complex human side. In his conclusion, Denny Ja 60: I am waiting for each kamisan is a work that should be appreciated. The charm and meaning contained in it can inspire the reader and invite them to reflect on the meaning of life and challenges that must be faced. Denny Ja is not just writing, but he is also able to convey deep messages through his works. In this digital era, literary works are often forgotten. However, through Denny Ja's works, we can see that literature still has an important place in our lives. Hopefully Denny Ja's works continue to inspire the younger generation and make a significant contribution to Indonesian literature.

razan’s slightly expanded intro post from CC👇
Tumblr media Tumblr media
L: Twilight Oasis model. R: Raz in heavy armor.
Razan Meziani (she/it)
Mordant Crescent cheerleader, dervish killer.
🌞 Born in 1107, in the temporary peace between Nightfall and Joko’s takeover of Elona.
🌞 In life, Raz was an Istani Sunspear known for her dazzling beauty, commitment to keeping morale up, and interest in, bordering on obsession with, Istan’s legendary dervishes, Amala and Khepri (Hero of Nightfall).
🌞 She developed her fighting style in contrast with the dervishes’, learning shadowsteps and brutal, abrupt strikes that made her the perfect complement—or foil—to a channeling dervish.
🌞 In 1136, Razan was left behind by Amala’s Sunspears to slow Joko’s advance into Istan, endured torture and mockery by the Awakened Captain Sutekh until she snapped and hamstrung the unbending Sunspear Captain Waheed, lost the Sunspear Great Hall, and failed to protect Zoha, Amala’s young child who loved Raz as a second mother. Utterly revolted by the Sunspears’ failure, Raz swore allegiance to Joko.
🌞 Twilight Oasis: Raz promised to win Kamadan and Amala’s life for Joko in exchange for possession of the soon-to-be-Awakened Amala and Zoha. She infiltrated Kamadan along with four other rebel Sunspear sappers and opened the gates for Joko’s Awakened army. Raz and the other sappers cut down dozens of Sunspears caught off guard by their betrayal, but fell to Amala’s rage, disgust, and giant scythe. Joko promptly Awakened the five rebel Sunspears, who threw themselves again at Amala and this time took her down.
🌞 Zoha was reanimated as a canine Awakened Abomination, while Amala was repurposed as the Mordant Crescent Great Hall’s Warden. Razan was used for 200 years as a dervish hunter, eliminating not just Sunspears but any holy warrior who blasphemed against Joko.
🌞 In the aftermath of Joko’s death at the Commander’s hands and Aurene’s teeth, Raz is a dangerous derelict in the last remaining Joko shrine in Istan, sitting vigil until her hated “god” returns. She hopes her waiting will temper Joko’s anger at the rest of Elona, reduce the people’s punishment, and vindicate her hopeless, gnarled worldview.

Ich mag auch was fragen :)
Und zwar Nummer 7, 22 & 76 (in Bezug auf "Melodie")
Vielen lieben Dank für deine Zahlen 😊
Here we go:
7. How do you choose which POV to write from?
22. Are there certain types of writing you won’t do? (style, pov, genre, tropes, etc)
76. Did you have any ideas that didn’t make the final cut of [Fanfic Name]?

I'm in a shippy mood so here are random OC/canon stuff:
Logan calling himself "your pact marshal" to the commander is 10000% the reason I started shipping Luci with him which I guess makes that line more amusing since they quietly got together with absolutely no fanfare when they thought the world was ending one whole episode ago. Things are kinda awkward in IBS because both Luci and Logan care deeply about what Rytlock thinks and obviously for IBS, Rytlock is busy and distracted and probably not the best time to tell him anything (most others figured it out). Luci manages to sit down and have a proper talk with him and they end up as kind of? An emotional polycule? They're all still together by EoD and Luci probably spent the time between the engagement party and What Lies Beneath with her two boyfriends at Southsun
Since Ben was recovering from being Mordrem for basically all of S3 and PoF and the start of S4, he doesn't meet Gorrik till just before Kourna (he arrived in Amnoon with Faren). Gorrik started telling him about Petey and Ben was immediately smitten. Ben has zero inclination to confess given his poor luck in general and by the start of EoD was sort of enjoying a friendly but unspoken rivalry with Taimi for Gorrik's personal time and friendship....they team up when Ankka happens
The horrible one: since Scilla managed to "unite" Tyria under the banner of the Pact and, as the rumors say, has control of some dragons, Joko invited her to visit Elona. Much to the terror of the average person, they struck up a passionate but very "when are they going to stab each other in the back" style of relationship pretty much as soon as they met
Bikki (Isekai Commander) does her best to not crush on Trahearne because she knows what happens to him. She fails badly and it takes her best friend future lover Lily to convince her to try and change the future because what's the worse that could happen when she already knows the worse things and what works out. She's terrified of becoming the Commander she's admired all her life but commits to it from then on and first kisses Trahearne at the party in Fort Trinity. Trahearne had bonded with her prior to this over nerding about Orr together so while he's surprised, he doesn't turn her down

8 and 12 for Delwyn!
- @praise-joko
Ooo a rare one!
8. What do you like to do for fun?
Target practice is pretty fun! I love testing the limits of my shooting skills, and it’s good training. Other than that? Well sometimes I’ll weave grasses and stuff into accessories when I’m bored, especially on watch duty.
Oh and when I do have a little free time from missions or training, I do find it pretty fun to keep my fellow soldiers company, if you get me. ;)
12. How would you describe your style?
When I’m not in armor? I think it’s pretty casual? I’m usually wearing a pretty loose sleeveless top, some arm guards usually for my bow, oh and boots, boots are always a staple.
