i love how ugly grrm gets. he isn’t afraid to have ugly characters that wouldn’t be physically desirable. so many books describe the main character as this other worldly beauty that is perfect in every way. it has always pissed me off and made it feel so unauthentic. but in asoiaf we have these objectively ugly people or these people who are objectively beautiful that become deformed or maimed in some way AND THEY DONT LOSE ANY OF THEIR WORTH BECAUSE OF IT.
like jaime for example his one purpose in life is to fight and when he loses his hand he loses his purpose but it sends him on a different path of self discovery. his fighting was a big part of him but there is so much more to him that was overlooked because of his fighting.
brienne is ugly and so what she is quite literally hands down one of the greatest people in the entire story. she is strong and honorable and will do what she has to do no matter how hard but she is still kind. despite all the shit that has been thrown at her that would make anyone bitter and cruel she still has an unrelenting compassion for everyone she meets. and that’s not a weakness of hers it’s one of her greatest strengths.
jeyne and theon who feel less than human who have been humiliated and defiled still get a redemption arc because they are worthy of one no matter what. they are physically and mentally destroyed but they’re gonna make it through.
their “ugliness” is what makes them such amazing authentic characters.
i saw a post about this that i can no longer find but it was something along the lines of how jon went to save arya at winterfell no matter how much she had changed. he knew she had been through hell and was definitely not the same little girl he knew but he doesn’t care because no matter how “ruined” society would brand her she was still his little sister arya.

A Game of Thrones, Jon II
“They wouldn’t let me out to say good-bye.”
“What did you do now?” Jon was amused.
Arya disentangled herself from him and made a face. “Nothing. I was all packed and everything.” She gestured at the huge chest, no more than a third full, and the clothes that were scattered all over the room.
“Septa Mordane says I have to do it all over. My things weren’t properly folded, she says. A proper southron lady doesn’t just throw her clothes inside her chest like old rags, she says.”
“Is that what you did, little sister?”
“Well, they’re going to get all messed up anyway,” she said. “Who cares how they’re folded?”
“Septa Mordane,” Jon told her.
“I don’t think she’d like Nymeria helping, either.” The she-wolf regarded him silently with her dark golden eyes.

Day 25: Family
Tumblr media
A lot of my Arya posts involve Jon but… honestly? That’s in canon too. There is literally no family Arya thinks about more than Jon. And this line says a lot about their relationship. ”Needle is Jon Snow’s smile”. Home for Arya, and also for Jon, is with each other. Jon and Arya have an intensely powerful bond that is stronger than any in the series. Not only do they always think of each other but Arya executes a Night’s Watch deserter partly because this man betrayed Jon by deserting. Thinking Arya was married to the psychopathic Ramsay Snow makes Jon do something nothing else could: break his vow of neutrality. They may be far from each other but never far from each other’s heart.
Tumblr media
Lyanna may be dead but she’s still an important part of Arya’s family. Arya is basically Lyanna’s successor. Ned says to Arya that she looks and acts much like Lyanna. Lyanna was said to have a wild beauty and it looks like Arya has inherited that from her. Arya is also great on a horse just like Lya was said to be possibly the most skilled horse rider in the North. And just like Lyanna, Arya loves flowers!
One of the sweetest moments between Ned and Arya is when Ned tells Arya “the lone wolf dies but the pack survives”. Packs are essentially wolf families. And Arya doesn’t just include direct family as part of her pack. Her friends (Gendry, Weasel, Lommy, Hot Pie) all become part of her pack and she does everything she can to protect them.

REUNION
Tumblr media
Ok I'm late for the party but I want to party too so I shall post the promps for the next week let's thank @albinokittens300 for the fantastic idea!
Reunion part2 : The Starks
When Catelyn Stark gave birth to the twins: Sansa and Bran, she and her husband were enchanted. How not to be when they had two new family members? Two beautiful babies? One all Tully and one all Stark, well mostly Stark. Soon they were surprised as they noticed that Sansa the oldest had a soulmark, it was small and they couldn’t make it out, but by its beautiful lively colors they knew that their baby girl shall be loved by her soulmate above anyone or anything else.
Bran showed a fierce temper even as a newborn both Eddard and her were happy to blame it on his wolfsblood while Sansa was a very easy baby. While the newborns slept and they waited until Lyanna came with Robb  and Aegon so they could meet their sister and brother and cousins respectively they spend much time trying to decipher the colors of Sansa’s mark: a velvet red ( for power ned insisted, even if it could also mean passion and activity), Orange ( they agreed on creativity and happiness), a golden Yellow ( Harmony Catelyn insisted), Emerald Green (Hope, nature and money where all good options), Sky blue ( for stability) and  Royal purple ( ambition, mystery and dignity) where the colors they could find.
They knew that raising a marked child was a huge responsibility, more so than normal, Sansa was destined for greatness and they had to guide her; she was blessed, but one they had to protect in order for her not to become a curse. They couldn’t be happier to know that there was someone out there that would die for their little girl: that the gods had smiled upon her and created someone who was perfect for her and from how complex the mark looked it was probable that they had already met and loved each other in another live: which indicated just how special their little girl was. It looked like Brandon might have a mark too, but it looked more like a normal birthmark than anything so they decided to worry about raising two marked ones if it ever looked like Bran’s mark were to become something more than a birthmark.
“Thank you dearest.” Whispered Ned to his wife looking at the twins that shared a crip and smiling and how it seemed that Bran reached for his sister.
“There is nothing to thank me for. My dearest husband.” Answered Catelyn looking at her twins. “They are beautiful aren’t they?” She asked.
“Aye that they are.” Agreed the Lord of Winterfell with a far away look in his eyes before signing.
“What is it Ned?”
“It is highly probable that Sansa’s soulmate shall be born as some Lord, but..”
“But if he isn’t she shall become the next Warden of the North, the Lady of Winterfell and you don’t know what to tell Robb.” Finished Catelyn for him. “I wouldn’t worry about it, Robb is as much a Tully as he is a Stark.”
“Family, Duty, Honor.” They both said smiling knowing that everything would be well.
______________________________________________________________
Aegon being 7 years old didn’t really understand why his cousin Robb was making such a problem at the fact that maybe just maybe Sansa would inherit the Lordship of Winterfell instead of him. It wasn’t as if the sweet babe had asked to be born with a soulmark and the Lordship was just a big headache or that is what his mother always said. Aegon liked his baby cousins a lot!
Sansa was sweet and didn’t make any fuss even when he sat with her in his arms for a really long time! She didn’t even pull his hair! Robb was just beeing stupid. Aegon also liked Bran who was much more lively than Sansa and pulled his hair, but that didn’t matter until Robb decided to act as he should. Aegon would be their big brother and protector! His mother always said that ones pack or family wasn’t just decided by blood but also by bonds so if he wanted to claim Sansa and Bran as his siblings he could and he did.
The twins were very fast in learning new things with Sansa being a little faster. Robb said that she cheated and did favor Bran, but how could a baby cheat? Anyway both his siblings were healthy and happy babies, even if for some reason Sansa called him Jon ( maybe his name sounded like that to a baby?) and Bran soon followed her in calling him that so he somehow became Jon to his family, and that is all he cared about.
______________________________________________________________
Robb at 6 was angry when his father told him that Sansa might inherit instead of him: she was already special! She had a soulmate out there: the gods had made a person specially for her, why would she need his lordship too?
When he was younger he felt jealous of his baby sister and would often give more attention to Bran who was a normal person like him. As he grew older he felt ashamed at having treated her like that realizing that having a soulmate didn’t mean life would be great: his father had sat him down and explained to him how Sansa would one day remember another life with another family and how those things might confuse and even hurt her and he felt bad for her… he had thought that those with a soulmark had an unfair advantage, but whatever positive they got from those stupid memories wouldn’t be worth the hearthbreak and confusion that remembering loved ones and not having them would bring her.
After that conversation with his father he went looking for Jon… who was actually called Aegon by his Aunt Lyanna and his parents, but preferred the name the twins gave him, and told him about his change of mind which made his cousin happy. It was strange, but even after starting to dream about her last life Sansa remained mostly the same: even if she started to behave more ladylike at times. She still loved songs and fairy tales, she also shared all she could remember about her soulmate with whoever would be willing to listen to her, something which seemed to bother their cousin Arya when she visited them with their Uncle Benjen from the other side of the wall.
But Robb and Jon, and probably their parents too, listened with rapt attention to the little girl. Her soulmate was: gentle, funny, he could always make her smile even when she didn’t feel like it, he was always busy with work, he had the most beautiful eyes one as green as the forest and another as dark as the night (heterochromatic), he was slightly tanned ( not a Northerner then), he had golden wavy curls he tried to control (westerner maybe?), he was very clever, he was a great story teller, he loved his family except for his older sister maybe, he also knew everything about dragons (someone with Targaryen heritage?), he had a scar across his face (war or a battle?) and there were moments where he wasn’t there even if they had been married (war).
The boys couldn’t pin much information down as it was because Sansa couldn’t always remember everything from her dreams, but they had a theory her soulmate had been: a western lord from a good house, maybe a second or third son, he might also have some Targaryen blood if all the mentions of him and dragons were any indication, he had heterochromia and had seen war… the only problem with the theory was that the Targaryens had never married into the westerlands: so either he had been a bastard or he wasn’t western.
______________________________________________________________
When Brandon and Sansa became 4 years old. Sansa’s beautifully colored mark showed a crowned lion above a wolf as if protecting it. Sansa always said that her lion protected her, but Ned and Catelyn saw something that made their blood turn into ice: the outer parts didn’t fade into her skin as they believed, but instead the colors and the outer lines turned smokey and ash colored. They both knew what this meant more so due the fact that their daughter's mark was a colored one: she had rejected her soulmate.
The only thing they didn’t know was why?  From what Sansa had told them she had been married to the man and at the very least she had been fond of him even if it might have been a purely political allegiance: what had made her disavow her kind, smart and brave soulmate? And worse, how should they explain it to her? How to explain to their fibrant beautiful baby girl that the soulmate that was waiting out there wasn’t looking forward to meeting her? That he had felt bad whenever he saw his soulmark just like she had felt happiness. They didn’t know how and talking to the family didn’t bring any light on how they should handle the situation.
Shortly before their eight birthday something frightening and amazing had happened: one night, in the middle of it, the twin had turned up in their room both crying and near hysteria trying to talk above the other. It took them almost an hour to calm the children down who wouldn’t stop blaming themselves and in case of Brandon asking for Sansa’s forgiveness.
Once they had calmed down they had decided that Sansa would be the first to speak as she was the calmest between the two.
“Ok tell me what is wrong dear?” Asked a tired Eddard.
“He won’t love me papa!” Exclaimed Sansa as tears started forming in her eyes.
“Who won’t love you?” Asked Catelyn who was rubbing Brans back.
“My lion! I hurt him mama! His father made us marry and I hated him! Well I didn’t hate him I hated his family and that he was a small man instead of a knight or a prince! I wasn’t fair! I was mean to him! And then I ran away and got hurt and when I saw him again I wanted to tell him I was sorry I didn’t, we weren’t married anymore and it was my fault I allowed him to be blamed for something he didn’t do! And he was still kind to me even if I was mean he asked me to marry him and I said no! Then when I wanted to marry him I never asked him because he was different, but he was only hurting and then we became friends again and I decided that I would ask him, but he died and I never told him I loved him nor did I ask him to marry me!..... He won’t ever love me!” Shouted the girl crying and dissolving in tears. Ned looked lost as he hugged her close, promising that they would help her.
“What about you Bran?” Asked the mother asked, perplexed.
“It isn’t Sansa’s fault and he does love her! It’s my fault that my good brother died and Sansa never forgave me… Please Sansa I said I’m sorry we’ll find him and I will explain everything and he will forgive you and you will both be happy.” Said Brandon. “Come on Sansa Ty loved you more than life and you know how much he loved life, he paid Bronn double whatever they offered for him for his life!” Continued the boy, shocking his parents.
“No he won’t I was a stupid little girl and he deserved better!” Exclaimed his twin.
“Maybe you were dear, but now you shall be better ok?” Asked her father and Sansa nodded her head before leaning against him sleepily. “Brandon, do you remember who you were?” Asked Eddard, feeling dread, his son's words were too specific. It was strange to be able to tell names even for marked ones: when had Brans’ birthmark bloomed into a full soulmark?
“I do. I was Bran the Broken.” Said the boy with a small voice looking at the floor.
Catelyn took in a sharp breath as everything fell in place and looked at her husband with pain in her eyes as they both realized whom their children had been: if Bran had been Bran the broken and Sansa was his sister, then Sansa’s lion husband had been Lord Tyrion Lannister the first…. and the story of their marriage wasn’t a pretty one or their story was pretty, but they married during the war of the five kings, a war mostly between the Starks and Lannister that the other big houses joined for their own profit started by the then Lady Stark kidnapping Lord Tyrion for a crime he didn’t commit and trying to have him executed: how he avoided that history wasn’t clear on it just that he did.
“Dearest, why don’t you put Sansa to bed while I speak with Bran?” Offers Ned looking at his troubled wife who nodded as they exchanged the twins leaving him with Bran with him alone in their bedchambers. “ May I see your soulmark Bran?” He asked gently and his son showed him his left wrist.
The soulmark was on his son's non dominant hand which was an indication that it was a platonic mark: the soulmark was the same as Sansa’s except for the colors where hers was a rainbow Bran’s mark was: green and orange with golden hues. It was also pretty faint as if it was the ghost of what it could be: maybe due the guilt his son felt?
“Why do you believe it is your fault that he died Bran? Or why is anything between Sansa and him your fault?”
“It’s my fault because the war started because of me! It’s my fault because I didn’t send him North to Sansa as soon as my reign was stable! It's my fault because I knew how they felt and when I received a raven about his return I didn’t insist that he should take some time off of his duty as my hand and stay North so Sansa could tell him how she felt!” Exclaimed the boy brawling and it was then that Eddard realized that no matter that Bran said he had been Bran the broken one of the wisest kings of Westeros this was also his son, his boy not even 8 and already feeling guilty of a death that couldn’t possibly be his fault.
“Ok let’s say that you could have done that back then and that Sansa and Lord Tyrion would have been happily married. Why didn’t you?” Asked the man softly.
“Because I was selfish. Because I wanted my good brother to stay by my side for as long as I could keep him there, because even if he gave me the moniker of the broken he never saw me as a cripple or as king I was Bran to him: the same Bran he had designed a saddle for so that he could ride again before everything went wrong… Bran the broken was 9 when he became a cripple, he was also nine when he met the Lannister Imp who was proud to be the imp and didn’t let it affect him much, he was 10 when his father was executed, he was also 10 when his older brother and mother were murdered in coldblood and he lost Winterfell and he was 10 when said imp became is good brother and even if years passed between when he last saw the imp and his coronation he never forgot that it was the imp who gave him hope and made him smile for the first time after losing his legs…” Mumbled Bran before he started to cry mourning the life he once had and maybe the man that the could once claim as his brother and it broke Neds heart that his son just like his daughter had lived a whole life they could remember mostly at night and that molded them and even might haunt them in the day light.
“It’s alright Bran, it will be alright. We shall find him and we’ll explain everything to him and if he is even half as kind as Sansa has always said and now you say: he will understand and love the both of you the same he did back then. Ned promised his youngest son and himself that he would do everything in his power to make everything alright.
______________________________________________________________
Sansa was very small when she realized she was special: she had a twin and she had a soulmark! not many had one of those and she had both. People often told her about how beautiful she was, how clever, how ladylike, but no one believed her to be very smart or intelligent, but she remembered her soulmate telling her that she was: somewhere in another life and how people underestimating one usually worked in one's favor.
She loved dreaming of her soulmate: he was handsome and funny and gentle and brave! He was smaller than most men or every man, but the idea of that didn’t bother her: the seven had made them for each other and she loved him! And from what she could remember him doing he loved her too, he also loved dragons and books and holding her hand and kissing it, but the last two she never told anyone. Sansa had many friends in school and she was proud to show them her beautiful soulmark of a crowned lion and a wolf colored with all the colors of the rainbow. Her family would always listen when she wanted to share something new she could remember from her dreams, except for cousin Arya, but she only liked fighting.
Young Sansa’s life was better than any fairy tale until one night her dreams took another turn. She remembered all the mean things she had said to her soulmate and all the times he had looked at her with hurt in his beautiful eyes and she had refused to apologize! She even saw herself running away from him when he didn’t do anything wrong only to miss him terribly and marry a bad man and then when they met again and he asked her to marry him she said no, but he forgave her and they stayed friends  and when she realized she wanted to ask him to marry her he had died… Sansa had cried a lot that night and Bran did too. Bran had been her Bran last time too and he felt guilty about things and wanted to help her and her soulmate: he was the best brother ever. After that night they both wore wrist bands over their soulmarks: Bran also had a soulmark for her soulmate, but his was that of family love her father explained to her when she got jealous.
After that day Sansa didn’t believe that life was a song anymore, but she would do better than she had done the last time and she would be kind to everyone. She often thought about her soulmate and how sorry she was and how she loved him after reading about the fact that some soulmates could communicate feeling due their bonds, but she never felt anything from her soulmark except its usual weight telling her it was there so maybe her soulmate and her didn’t share that connection?
Another part done now tommorow the last.. or not depends it might become a 4 parts story! lol

In the godswood she found her broomstick sword where she had left it, and carried it to the heart tree. There she knelt. Red leaves rustled. Red eyes peered inside her. The eyes of the gods. "Tell me what to do, you gods," she prayed. For a long moment there was no sound but the wind and the water and the creak of leaf and limb. And then, far far off, beyond the godswood and the haunted towers and the immense stone walls of Harrenhal, from somewhere out in the world, came the long lonely howl of a wolf. Gooseprickles rose on Arya's skin, and for an instant she felt dizzy. Then, so faintly, it seemed as if she heard her father's voice. "When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives," he said. "But there is no pack," she whispered to the weirwood. Bran and Rickon were dead, the Lannisters had Sansa, Jon had gone to the Wall. "I'm not even me now, I'm Nan." "You are Arya of Winterfell, daughter of the north. You told me you could be strong. You have the wolf blood in you." "The wolf blood." Arya remembered now. "I'll be as strong as Robb. I said I would." She took a deep breath, then lifted the broomstick in both hands and brought it down across her knee. It broke with a loud crack, and she threw the pieces aside. I am a direwolf, and done with wooden teeth. - Arya X, ACoK
Arya is so rarely associated with faith and prayer in this fandom, yet when she prays to the Old Gods for guidance, they respond and restrengthen her sense of self. Arya of Winterfell! Daughter of the North! She is a direwolf and done with wooden teeth! ✨🤍🩶🐺✨

The Kid of Candles
Jason Todd has been living on the streets for a while now. Ever since his mom overdosed, he's been struggling to find shelter. He was doing better in the summer and fall, but now bitter winter had come to Gotham, and it was taking everything he had not to freeze to death.
There were a lot of kids like him and even more that went to sleep but never woke up after a snowstorm. Jason is still tiny, and very new, and that means he's an easier target. He has met kids who pretend to be kind in order to steal from him but he's also met some who were willing to share what little they had.
He wouldn't call them friends. Just other survivors. He is currently in a camp created by these survivors. Street kids have carved their own place on the streets simply by staying alive the longest, and casually they allow the smaller ones in for the bad weather with the understanding that the younger ones were to leave as soon as the sun was up.
He is trying to warm up next to the lit fire by one of the older street kids when a teenager stands on a little crate. The teenager starts tapping a piece of wood against a small amount of metal like they are trying to make a toast.
He's unsure about their gender; they always tell people they are not a girl or a boy, but they are the leader of the little pack of street urchins and the only ones willing to share the small blankets.
They go by Rowan, and Rowan adores campfire stories as if they were just some rich kids paying to go out into the woods and sleep in tents instead of shivering unwanted brats sleeping on rolled-up newspapers. Some street kids groan and roll their eyes, but not Jason.
Rowan's stories are the closest he can get now to books. Before, he would read and escape to the magical world found among letters away from his mother's addiction and the worsening living conditions. Books were his comfort and one of the things he missed the most from his home.
"Gather around, gather around children, and listen to the tale of the Kid of Candles!" Rowan starts, cracking their voice into a gleeful cackle. The older ones scoff, but the younger kids all turn their attention to the ringleader.
Jason moves away from the fire to sit right in front of the crate, pulling his knees to his chest as he settles. Someone takes his spot by the fire, and he hopes the story is worth the loss. "Long ago, when Gotham was first founded by Captain Jon Logerquist, he claimed to follow a bright white light that led him right to Gotham River after suffering the loss of his entire crew to a sea storm. He would have died had he not lit the last candle on the ship- a black candle. The candle attracted the attention of a unique child, who appeared on his deck among the bright light. A boy with snow white hair, glowing green eyes, and sharp teeth pulled into a kind smile."
The children gasped as even Jason leaned closer, captivated by Rowan's smooth voice. "Captain Jon Logerquist was able to rebuild his ship and return home to report the ideal location for a new city. The founding families, the Waynes, the Kanes, the Elliots, and the Cobblepots, all agreed to take the Logerquist's request and loaded their four family ships with volunteers to start Gotham. Still, they soon became lost when Captain Logerquist tragically passed along the trip. As he was the only person who knew the way, the new crew and civilians quickly panicked, getting further and further away from the location that would later be Gotham. They attempted to turn around, hoping to return home, but navigation tactics were not working. It was almost as if the waters and stars moved, wanting to claim as many victims as possible. This would later be known as Gotham's Orginal Curse."
Rowan paused to wiggle their fingers at the crowd of ten children and a few teenagers- the ones from Rowan's original gang- all made the appropriate ooooohhhhh sounds. Jason shivers as a storage sense of pressure settles around his shoulders. It felt like the city itself was listening to the tale. He wonders if anyone else felt it.
"They quickly ran out of food, and the passengers even began speaking of eating each other to survive. A young Wayne boy, one of the few who could read, found Logerquist's journal in his cabin and decided to try lighting a black candle while the adults argued." Rowan continues mimicking, opening a book, and lighting a candle. That's another thing Jason liked about Rowman's stories. They tended to act out some scenes, and it was highly entertaining.
"Just like before, a bright white light appeared before the lite black candle, and a boy with snow white hair, glowing green eyes, and a kind, sharp smile told the Waynes to follow him, which they agreed to. The three other family ships reluctantly followed when the Waynes broke away from the formation and arrived at Gotham. There, they found all the resources they needed to survive and riches beyond their wildest dreams. Since then, the Kid of Candles has appeared throughout Gotham's history, leading those who are lost to their homes whenever a black candle is lit. It is said to this day if you are genuinely lost and light a black candle, the Kid of Candles will appear but be warned, his assistance always comes with a price,"
Jason gasped as the pressure increased around him. Seriously how had no one else felt it yet? "What is the price?"
Rowan snaps their fingers at him with a sinister smile. "Death. When you ask the dead for help, they will ensure you join them as a repayment. Maybe not the same day, maybe not for years, but he will claim you eventually."
A few kids whimpered.
"Oh, knock it off, Rowan," A teenage girl snaps. "You're scaring the little ones with your stupid urban myths."
"Gotham myths are not stupid!" Rowan's gasps hurt. "They are the closest accurate account of Gotham's real history!"
"Sure, just like the Court of Owls and their Talons." the girl rolls her eyes.
"Those are real. The Court's Talons should not be taken lightly. They are far worse than the Kid of Candle. At least he is benevolent enough to help you home!"
Jason retreats to his corner of the abandoned warehouse factory, ignoring the bickering of the teenage gang. He sits with his back to the wall, his feet tucked close to his chest, and all his things squished between his body and a second wall on his right. It's uncomfortable but ideal for keeping what little he has safe and making it easier to get up and run should the need arise.
He found that the need came a lot more often than he liked. He nods off after trying to squeeze his body closely together to hopefully gather warmth.
The following day, a teenager kicks him in the side, sneering that the free space-time is over and Rowan wants him out in ten minutes. Jason doesn't have to be told twice, gathering his things and scurrying to the exit. As he passed Rowan, he offered the elder a nod of thanks, and the storyteller gave him a wink and grin.
They also press a black candle into Jason's palm. "Hey he brought me to my gang, so why can't he lead you?"
Jason smiles, no commenting, and pockets the candle without hesitation. He may need to sleep here again and doesn't think calling bullshit will be a smart move.
It's best not to offend the crazy leader. A day goes by where he panhandles out of the cop's sight, wandering around the city looking for some food, and even gets a rich guy to give him fifty bucks after asking politely, but he runs when he asks if he has somewhere safe to sleep.
All in all, not the worst day. That night, he returns to Rowan's place but is told they already have too many. Disheartened, Jason wanders to sleep under a bridge by Gotham River. As he shivers near the frozen water, he thinks of the black candle.
He has a few matches on him, and maybe the small candle can help him start a bigger fire to keep warm. Jason strikes his match The pressure from before returns making him waver for only a moment before he dares set the wake aflame.
A few seconds go by with nothing happening, and he's just about getting embarrassed for believing in a stupid urban legend when he's blinded by the brightest light he's ever seen. A floating boy with white hair, green glowing eyes, and a broad smile appears before Jason.
He screams, stumbling back to fall on his butt as the boy floats to touch the ground before him.
The boy smile widens. "Hello Jason, it's time to go home."
Jason runs, but it gives chase, throwing out directions. He attempts to do whatever it is- by going the opposite direction, but it's to no avail. Jason knows Gotham like the back of his hand and swears the streets are moving. Roads that are blocks away from each other are right around the corners he takes.
Soon, an unnatural light blue fog surrounds him, blocking his view of anything more than two feet before him. He glances over his shoulder, confirming the mist is coming from the glowing figure that flies behind him at an easy, steady pace.
He picks up his speed.
Jason doesn't understand what's happening, but he remembers Rowan's voice as he pumps his legs to go as fast as they can to the point they burn. This would later be known as Gotham's Orginal Curse."
Oh god, he's been cursed by the Kid of Candles!
"We're here. I hope you have a lovely life with your new family." The being suddenly says hand on Jason's elbow, causing the boy to trip over and hit against a large metal gate. The fog disperses like a blown-away candle, and the Kid of Candles vanishes in its smoke as the gates of Intercon turn on.
"Wayne Manor. Who might you-" a voice with a British accent speaks over the speakers, but Jason cuts them off with a frightful yelp.
"Help! Help! Please, he's going to kill me!" He shouts, eyes swinging around the new place he is. He thinks he doesn't recognize this place at all, which means he's somewhere out of the city- the outskirts. Where the wealthy live.
It would take a good two hours by car to get here, and The Kid of Candles got him here in ten by bending reality or something. And now Jason owed it something.
He owed it his death.
He crumbles into sobs, so terrified his heart feels like it will escape from his chest. "Please. I don't want to die. I don't want to die."
There is a long pause, where all Jason can hear is his own uneven breathing and the beating of his chest, before the gates swing open, and a slightly older teenager- probably around Rowan's age- is offering him a hand.
"Hi, I'm Dick. I think I can help you if you come inside."
Jason stares at the hand for a few seconds, but from the corner of his eye, he swears he sees a boy watching them and quickly takes the hand.
His right elbow has a new tattoo he never paid for. It's a burning black candle, right where the Kid had touched him. It's also the same tattoo on Rowan's right hand. Jason cries for hours when he finds it.
Years later, Jason will admit that the Kid of Candles truly did help him find a home. He would come to love Bruce like father, as the man took him in, mistaking Jason as an escapee of human trafficking, and was there to buffer the misunderstanding between him and Dick.
He would point out that Dick called him dad outside the house, and Bruce would sit his eldest down to ask if he was okay with an adoption. Dick would settle with the knowledge that Bruce didn't keep him around to fight crime, and he would open his heart to Jason as a brother.
He would grow to follow in his brother's footsteps and become Robin- after making sure Dick was okay with it- and would help his new father fight crime. When Jason is fourteen, he finds out his mother is not his biological, and he learns his real mom is still alive.
He asks Dick and Bruce for help to find her, so the three load the plane as the Waynes instead of the Bats, and thus they help put her away together when the met-up goes south.
She tries to sell them to the Joker, but Bruce overhears her and gets authorities to him in mere minutes, long before the Joker can meet up with her.
She is in cuffs and being led away from the warehouse where the Joker was going to wait for her.
In the chaos, Jason notices the glowing white-haired boy smiling at the warehouse entrance, but Jason doesn't go near it. Not even after it explodes, killing the Joker who was inside. Not even when Bruce holds them close, horrified that they could have been so close to the explosion- they were in civilian identities and needed to put up a show- but he does notice that the Candle on his elbow is shorter.
That night Jason traces the shorter melted candle and he knows he escaped death once more. He doesn't know how he knows but something deep within him knows the Kid of Candles hand something to do with it.
He would swing by Rowan's place as Robin and Jason Wayne to help them and their gang get off the streets.
Rowan would one day open a bookstore, where they would hold weekly storytelling, naming the store the Black Candle in thanks to the spirit that led them to his lifelong friends.
Jason will, however, never get over his fear of ghosts, not even when the same green fog would one night lead the neighbor's boy right to their yard. His little brother, Tim, thought The Kid of Candles was kind, handsome, and awesome (might be a crush in all honestly) but Jason will always know it was much more dangerous than meets the eye.
All things in Gotham are deadly beautiful like that.
The Waynes still have a drawer full of black candles they take out in the field, just in case.
(Danny Phantom watches Jason sleep, his protection core warming as the boy cuddles with Tim after his little brother admitted to a nightmare. He's glad they found somewhere that could offer everything they needed in a home.
A house and a home are two very different things, after all.
It reminds him of when he was alive.
A candle is flickered on somewhere in the city, and he blinks out of existence, ready to help- Steph- get away from her father. Hmmm, well, Bruce does have the space for more kids)

Sansa as Queen in the North is so grief coded to me I cannot bear it. The girl who has been trying to get back to her family for years only for her family to leave her once they are reunited. Winterfell is her home yes but what is left of it? Ash and Snow.
A girl who is keeping a promise her father made to his people, her brother made to his people, her cousin made to his people. They are her people now as they have always been, but they are not her family, and they are loyal at first because of her name and only later because of who she is.
Most of her brothers are dead. Theon is dead. Bran is King of the Southern Kingdoms. Brienne is his Kingsguard. Arya has left to find what lies beyond the distant shores. And Jon is North of the Wall.
Leadership is isolating and lonely and as much as she may have been groomed to be a wonderful ruler she was not made to live alone. She survived being alone to come back to her pack and now she rules over a ruin and the crypts beneath it. She must endure as the last Stark in Winterfell. Her duty demands it. Love is the death of duty and she is her father's daughter.
What is it like, I wonder, to be Queen of what remains?

"No," she said, "that's Sansa." - Eddard, AGoT
It's skillful the way GRRM sets up a situation with Sansa and then subverts with Arya in the books.
First, Robert Baratheon wants a redo of his relationship with Lyanna Stark by fixing a marriage between Sansa and Joffrey. Except Joffrey is not really his son and the marriage ends up not happening.
Meanwhile Ned (and several other characters including Bran with his visions) compares Arya to Lyanna in terms of looks and personalities in the text of the story. And it's Arya who has the love of both Robert and Rhaegar's sons Gendry and Jon Snow.
Secondly, it's the way the Southerners see Sansa as the key to the North. From the Lannisters to the Tyrells and even Littlefinger in the Vale, all plotting to marry Sansa off for her claim.
Meanwhile, it's Arya Stark for whom the North is rising up and waging war. Arya Stark for whom the LC of the NW has broken his oaths. Arya Stark whom the King Beyond the Wall/Abel the Bard was trying to steal out of Winterfell. Arya Stark whom Stannis Baratheon has promised Jon Snow that he will save.
While unbeknownst to the south and even LF, Robb Stark has written a decree that disinherits Sansa and Jon Snow supports Stannis as King even as he vows to never let Sansa Lannister get Winterfell while he lives.
And thirdly, even with Jaime sending off Brienne to find Sansa (because he and everyone else assumes that Arya is dead), we see Brienne following in Arya's footsteps through the Riverlands, meeting the same side characters. She meets Gendry and Willow Heddle who is a stand in for Arya with similar characteristics and Hyle Hunt even ships them together! And the constant references to the great big wolf pack hunting in the Riverlands - we know who that is!
All this is subtle and yet build up steadily over five books. And Arya has not returned to Westeros yet and still GRRM has several plots revolving around the character. Can't wait to read what happens when she actually gets back as Arya Stark in TWoW.

The Pack Survives is not just pretty words.
I've been doing a lot of "No actually, you're wrong" posts lately (it feels like) but they just come to me...
"The pack survives" - House Stark is a team effort.
No one survives alone. They are all going to be instrumental in saving each other one way or the other. No one will pull themselves out of the mire of danger or despair by the power of their own strength and will. No one in this series survives alone. None of them have up until now. Everyone needs help, and they are worth helping. There is no One Hero. Only cooperation and compassion.
The wolves also only survived because the Starks chose to save them. Their mother was dead, but they found a pack of pups in the summer snows and chose to let them live by feeding them by hand. It was Jon's love for his brother that made the difference and it enabled them to find and include the missing white mute pup, as well. From death, life. Cooperation and compassion.
No one is ending this series as a figure of lonesome sacrifical leadership. That's the opposite of the pack surviving. Jon is not going into whatever shape of exile or separation from his family there is being imagined. Arya's travels will not imply a severance of her family connection. Sansa is not going to be some kind of unmarried virgin queen, lonely at the top as the only way to preserve her power. That's not a win for female rulership, that's a signal of the status quo actually Not Changing. Not going to happen. There will be no future pack if Sansa isn't in an actual partnership. Bran will not be a depersonalized god-figure. He'll be a disabled young boy beginning a new kind of life embedded in a support system. The way he thought he would be the day he fell from the tower.
Rickon. Eternal Mystery.
Family Duty Honor - why is Edmure the Tully that survives? Because he's the only one who didn't turn these words into a farce. He was loyal to his family, dutiful to his subject, honorable in his conduct and intentions. More so than Robb, Brynden, any of them. Hoster betrayed his daughter, Lysa abandoned her family in turn, Catelyn was strangled by the devotion to duty, the discrepancy between honor and family that is forced by patriarchy, until she snapped. Edmure chose his people, he chose his family, and he chose his unborn child, and he chose his uncle. He's not playing brilliant strategic games, he's no crackshot under pressure, he is not the stuff of songs and legend. But he's making the actual right choices time and again. "My people. They were afraid." Swim on, trout.

For me, idk if Sansa is the girl in grey in Melisandre's prophecy and i don't care if they reunite at the Wall, in the Vale, in Winterfell or on the way, because the thing is its almost given that Sansa and Jon will be the first Starks to reunite since they are the most distant ones. Its how grrm works. The Starks are the central family of the series and out of their four povs that remain, Jon and Sansa are the only ones to not have a defined relationship and their reunion in twow before others will give them time to develop one.
In defence of the girl in grey theory - at this point it almost impossible to imagine her being not sansa. As much as I would prefer the vale meeting. Just think of it - Jon and Melisandre were thinking that the girl in grey would be Arya but ironically it was Jeyne Pool/Alys Karstark who happened to be geographically more convenient? Nah, that's not the irony of GRRM. Now, Sansa who Jon barely registers as sister in his inner pov - that would be the irony that we are used to in ASOIAF.
The girl in grey being not the Stark but someone else entirely just because this girl fits the criteria? It's not interesting. It gives the same vibes as theory that Cersei's valonqar is neither Tyrion nor Jaime and some other person that just happens to be someone else's younger sibling. That's just boring.
"Jon and Sansa are the only ones to not have a defined relationship" - oooh, now that's the topic I can speculate about for hours.
I'm rereading ASOS right now and gosh, the ways GRRM chooses to portray these two while their lack of any established relationship in books? That's simply fascinating how he dances around some words and names.
One of the most interesting part of this lack of interactions is the fact that it doesn't mean that they don't have this defined relationship. Their meeting and then dynamic will be a total wild card - unlike any other pair of siblings. They can literally have any dynamic and shared history or lack of it and we have no idea what it will be. I'm so excited!
And it's not only that. There is a conflict between them too - until they learn that Bran and Rickon are alive they both are kinda heirs of Starks and Winterfell, both are ruler coded since AGOT and their political strengths complement each other's weaknesses. Moreover, both can support each other's claim. Sansa Stark while being legitimate heir in many lords eyes is still married to Lannister and everyone knows it and she is also a girl who doesn't know how to wage a war. On the other hand Jon Snow even with Stark blood printed on his Ned Stark (who is still beloved in the North) face is still a bastard and can't interfere with claim of legitimate heirs (given that Robb's will is still unknown). One of them on his/her own can raise a lot of questions but two can make a decent claim.
So yeah.
Sansa and Jon meeting first of the pack is making quite a lot of sense from every point of view. It's not just that they are most distant siblings and thus make more interesting pair to interact, it's also very practical for GRRM if he wants Starks to go on the offensive - two of them combined can actually form a decent political power (in terms of both claim and set of skills). No other pair of Starks has that.

A book passage makes me forever sad about Jon:
[...] Jon had never met anyone so stubborn, except maybe from his little sister Arya. Is she still my sister? Was she ever? He had never truly been a Stark, only Lord Eddard's motherless bastard, with no more place at Winterfell than Theon. And even that he'd lost. When a man of the Night's Watch said his words, he put aside his old family to join his new one, but Jon Snow had lost those brothers, too.
ASOS - JON III
At that point of the story Jon had lost not one but two families (his pack in Winterfell and his Black brothers). And neither time by his own decision. His father (with Lady Catelyn and Maester Luwin's influence) decided to send him to the Wall and Halfhand was the one who thought of the plan of Jon pretending to be a turncloak.
In my opinion, the saddest part of this quote is where he questions Arya's relation to him. He always were a great, supportive older brother for Arya and he's in fact her favourite sibling. We have also witness time after time that he has genuine love towards his siblings, he's nothing like what Lady Stark fears he would be or how westerosi society paints children born out of wedlock to be.
And yet, despite his feelings for his siblings being genuine, he still feels inferior to them (and how can he not? That's what everyone taught him). He loves them and knows they love him back but he's not one of them. They are Starks, he's Snow. They are the lordings of Winterfell and him the Lord's bastard. According to westerosi society it's their right to live in Winterfell and have a life of luxury while he only lives there as long as the Castle's Lord - his father- allows it.
Winterfell should be his home as much as it's Robb's, Sansa's, Arya's, Bran's and Rickon's.Still, he felt as welcomed there as Theon ; who was a hostage.
