"When I showed [Stephen Sondheim] the finished film, he said, 'You treated me gently and royally, for which I'm grateful,'" says [Lin-Manuel Miranda]. "And then he wrote me and said, 'But the last phone message to Jon, the language feels a little trite. I don't feel like I would ever really say that. Can I rewrite it?' I was like, 'Gosh, a rewrite from Stephen Sondheim — do I accept this?'"
There was only one problem — [Bradley Whitford] had already wrapped his work on the project and was unavailable to re-record it. Sondheim offered to record the new version for Miranda, and it's his voice that audiences can hear in the final cut.
"It makes me weep to even think about," gushes Miranda. "Because he was such a mentor to Jon and generations of songwriters. But yes, he rewrote that message and recorded it himself and just sent it to me." (x)

Andrew Garfield as Jonathan Larson + Stephen Sondheim as himself tick, tick… BOOM! (2021) When I screened the movie for Sondheim, he e-mailed me and said, “You treated me very gently and royally, for which I am grateful.” But he said, “One thing: the last voice mail message to Jon, it sounds a little cliché. ‘I have a feeling you’re going to have a very bright future.’ I would never say that. Can I please rewrite what Sondheim says in the voice mail? I’ll record it if you can’t get the actor back.” - Lin-Manuel Miranda on his Stephen Sondheim re-write.

Jonathan Larson essentially being like, “yeah life absolutely sucks, aging is terrifying and we all feel like we’re running out of time” but then singing that “at least you’re not alone, your friends are there too” is oddly comforting.
Because life does suck and it is terrifying. But having friends who understand you, who are going through the same things as you and who love you even in your bad moments all make it just a little bit easier to get through and sometimes a little bit easier is enough to make you want to push through all the bad shit.

I think of the day I met Michael. It was the first day at sleep-away camp, 22 years ago. We were eight. I think of high school, all the shows we did together. I think of the summer that our parents decided to stay in the same town in Cape Cod, a mile away from each other. And we’d meet on the beach every night and, we’d just sit there talking till three in the morning about our plans. About how one day we were gonna move to the city together and find a cheap apartment and be discovered, and change the world.

Andrew Garfield is so genuine, generous and just terrifyingly open with his emotions when he acts, and in pretty much all of his interviews, and I think that’s why I love watching him on screen so much. Because he’s not afraid to be sincere and beautiful in his openness, despite the possibility of scorn or rejection, and that is something I long to be able to do— to be free with myself and with others that I care about, without fear. Everything he’s in, he gives it his all, and I’m just so thankful that we get to see this sunflower of a human being bloom.
