♡ COMMON & GIVEN BRAZILIAN SURNAMES
Brazil is a very multi-ethnic and diverse country. Our people have heritage from all sorts of immigrants, most commonly being italian, Indian (as in native, not from India), German, African, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Arabian. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but not all Brazilians are POC. In 2010’s census, we registered 47,51% white, 43,42% brown, 7,52% black, 1,1% “amarelos” (term used here that means a person is from Asian heritage) and 0,42% native. With that in mind, under the cut, you’ll find a list with LOTS of surnames you’ll find in Brazil, not all necessarily are brazilian last names, but they’re commonly used in here.

The death of King João I of Portugal, Part 3: The ritualized translation
On the eve of the transfer, D. Duarte left the Paço, where landed, a solemn procession on foot, headed by the monarch, covered in black mourning, and with all the lords, noble people and masters of the kingdom, wearing burel,
accompanied by a huge crowd that followed in total silence and sadness. The procession was so vast that, when they arrived at the first gate of the Cathedral, the latter had just left the palace.
The doors of the See were closed. Then came to the window of the chapel of St. Anthony the Dominican and confessor of Prince Henry, Master Friar Rodrigo, who gave the sermon.
Opening the doors, a gloomy cathedral was glimpsed into the funereal, clad in black cloth, with scaffolding on the ships, full of torches, and one large, tall and very triumphant, on the cruise, flying the royal flag and all other flags of arms of all kings and princes of blood or royal kinship, arranged according to strict heraldic codification.
King, infants, and great lords transferred the royal body from the stilts where it stood to this specially prepared for the funeral ceremony. The entire hierarchy surrounded her with pontifical bishops and abbots, while twelve religious censed the tomb. The Archbishop of Braga, D. Fernando da Guerra, presided with solemnity to the religious office, followed by those present with the greatest devotion, but also with much mourning. At night the royal body was guarded by Infante D. Pedro, accompanied by many gentlemen, chaplains and clerks.
Early on 26 October, because the days were already shorter for such a long trip, D. Duarte went to the See, listening to the pontifical Mass, again officiated by the Archbishop, and filled with a rich gift from Christ: gold, silver, brocades and silk of the royal chapel.
After the religious ceremonial, the solemn funeral procession was prepared. Again by the hand of the king and infants, the royal ferret was deposed on a cart that stood at the door of the See.
Five beautiful and well-groomed horses rode the procession, riding by noble men, who represented all the symbolism of royal armory and courtesy. In the first, covered in white and red damask, were the weapons of St. George, the patron saint of the royal battles;
in another, clothed in red and blue apricot, the royal colors, were the royal weapons;
in the third, it was embroidered in its ornament the motto "for good";
in the next, his coat of arms were drawn from their border;
and the last one, clothed in black apricot, represented mourning, the absence of the lord of arms and figurative insignia.
Immediately afterwards was the cart carrying the royal coffin, which D. Duarte, the infants and lords were pushing.
On the twelve horses that followed them, they could see the whole ceremonial of armories and flags, which the kings of arms would have meticulously prepared. The rancher's wielder held the flag with royal weapons, collected and overthrown in pity; the others symbolically wore their helm, banners, script, spear, knife, and other royal weapons.
The last wielded a black raft, the tips of which trailed across the floor, figuring the dead king.
On Rua Nova the procession stopped.
On a pulpit took over a master of theology who gave a sermon. The journey resumed to the São Domingos Monastery. From a dais raised the eloquent literate doctor Diogo Afonso de Mangancha. From there the procession continued until the door of St. Vincent, where the royal body of the city came out.
Saying goodbye to Lisbon, the cart was pulled by four horses and the king, infants and gentlemen rode horses, followed by 24 men of religion, torches lit and praying the hours until they reached the monastery of Odivelas, where they waited for him.
The Abbot of Alcobaça and other abbots with crosses lead him to the interior. There was a night watch with the faithful guard of Prince Henry with the Commanders and Knights of the Order of Christ. The next day the Abbot of Alcobaça celebrated Mass.
Sequentially this same reception took place in the church of Vila Franca de Xira:
Alcoentre:
and Alcobaça:
having said Mass in these places, respectively, the bishop of Évora, D. Álvaro de Abreu, the bishop of Guarda and the abbot of Alcobaça, and in custody. the royal body, Infante João and the commanders and knights of Santiago, Infante D. Fernando, accompanied by his servants and those of the king, and finally the Count of Barcelos with his nobles and knights.
This journey took 4 days to reach the Batalha. In the São Jorge Chapel, a symbolic landmark of the battlefield of Aljubarrota, the procession was waiting for the same horses that accompanied him in Lisbon.
The procession was received at the gates of the Batalha monastery by all the bishops and clerks in their richest garments and hoisting many crosses.
And at the last entrance to his beloved Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, the tomb of D. João I was carried, again, on the infants' shoulders until it was raised inside, all of them also equipped with cloths, flags, wax torches. The sermon was in charge of D. Duarte.
But it was laid with great discretion. After finishing the offices in Batalha, D. Duarte advised all present to leave the monastery because there were great pestilences in the place. It was therefore some religious of the monastery and prelates who buried him in the chancel, next to his beloved wife D. Filipa. On their first birthday, commemorated on 14 August 1434, by order of D. Duarte, the bodies of D. João and D. Filipa were definitively transferred to the Founder's chapel, in the Monastery where they rest in a marital grave.

( this is how i walk into my house . ) what’s up fuckers !? - i try to be funny & reference vines as much as possible to seem Cool & Hip . okay , moving on , i’m loey & i’m just a small town girl livin’ in a lonely world . sadly , i didn’t take the midnight train goin’ anywhere . i’ll stop with the references but i honestly can’t help myself -- it’s 1am while i’m writing this & there’s no stopping me once i start typing . so before this little intro before the intro gets too long ( it already has , loey , you dumbo . ) i’d like to tell you that everything will be under the cut ! trigger warning : murder . & i would like to apologize those who are mobile because this will probably be long because i have a lot to say about my new found love of the portuguese renaissance & the braganza house .
☆ ━ ━ OUT OF THE WAY ! can’t you see TEODÓSIO I OF BRAGANZA , the duke of portugal coming this way ? i hear he is EDUCATED , but also SHORT - TEMPERED . he seems to remind everyone of crumbling architecture , the harsh change from black to white , & the faint smell of foreign spices . hopefully one day he will succeed in his ambition to travel across the seas to go see brazil & other foreign countries , but then again , the court is a dangerous place . one can only hope HE will keep HIS head . . .
okay imma be upfront & personal with y’all for like two seconds so bare with me . i fucking love history . i love everything about history , well , not EVERYTHING but close enough to the point where i literally told my friend to send me the link to this roleplay when she said it was history based royalty . i’ll have you know that the habsburg family owns my heart while the de medici family owns my ass . & please , keep in mind that this is 1am me writing this , i am not sound of mind . okay , on with the show & my little precious baby named teodósio .
ABOUT TEODOSIO I SPECIFICALLY
first thing out of the gate : this little shit is known to be the PERSONIFICATION OF THE PORTUGUESE RENAISSANCE ! did you know that ? because i sure didn’t .
i’m being so serious right now ! like that was his legacy & i’m so proud of him .
he’s also known as a PRINCE of the renaissance
his full name including the titles is : dom. teodósio i of braganza , twelfth count of barcelos , ninth count of orurém , sixth count of arraiolos & neiva , fifth duke of braganza , & fourth marquis of vila viçosa .
( please don’t ask me why they had to add the numbers idk )
he was supposed to also be duke of guimarães but he ceded that title to give to his brother - in - law infante duarte i aviz of portugal ( who was the sixth son of king manuel i of portugal & maria of aragon )
it was for his sister’s dowry
is in laws with the holy roman emperor charles v which is nice to know
he’s a very educated , scholarly man who much prefers sophisticated talk to rumors & gossip
( that doesn’t mean he won’t say NO to not knowing )
a patron of the arts
has a huge love for painting & sculpture
his favorite artists are jorge afonso , gregorio lopes , & vasco fernandes
he doesn’t particularly have a favorite sculptor so he’ll talk about a lot of them , but mainly : alonso berruguete & donatello
he does have a short temper though . he doesn’t care for illogical decisions or those made based on emotions
which is kind of a hypothetical way to thinking because he’s all for new , higher ways of thinking & likes to expand on it
comes from money & he knows it
also may or may not have pledged his allegiance to the king manuel i of portugal to keep said wealth because that’s his uncle & teo’s dad ( jaime ) may or may not have been banished for a short period of time because jaime’s dad was executed for high treason against king john ii of portugal then the throne was passed to king manuel i & demanded loyalty from jaime in order to restore the house of braganza
these things happen , it’s fine
his mom ( leonor pérez de guzmán , daughter of juan alfonso pérez de guzmán ) was murdered on the suspicion of adultery when he was nine years old so that’s nice
* P E R S O N A L I T Y : he is a very smart man , he knows the ins & outs of court & uses it to his advantage . he is very educated in a lot of ways & excels in finding out how to use someone’s weakness against them . he’s very good at not getting caught & does cover up his tracks . he also has a love for the extravagant & richer side of life : takes pride in being surrounded in the most exquisite things . he’s rather cheerful & talkative , enjoys being with others as much as possible . teodósio is hard to cross but when you do , he’s a grudge holder & will be cold towards you . he never forgets a face even though he will forget the name belonging to it .
JUST A LITTLE INFORMATION ON THE HOUSE OF BRAGANZA
the most serene house of braganza -- coat of arms
parent house : portuguese house of burgundy by way of the house of aviz
founder : afonso i , duke of braganza
afonso i was the illegitimate son of king john i of portugal
his father valued him a lot & let him have the title
because of this it granted a high seat in the portuguese court
the braganzas were one of the wealthiest & most powerful noble houses of the iberian peninsula
the house had produced 15 portuguese monarchs & 4 brazilian monarchs , numerous consorts to various european kingdoms , & numerous other notable figures
everyone who belonged in the house grew up with a very privileged life along with a great marriage to another high ranking noble
in 1640 , portugal was not in the greatest of times which caused a wide spread distrust towards the current king , philip iii
the eighth duke of braganza , joão ii , made a claim on the throne , which was granted by the nobility through his grandmother infanta catarina of portugal , & became king
after the accession the duchy became the traditional title of the heir to the throne
in 1808 , the braganzas transferred their royal court to the state of brazil because of the impending napoleonic invasion
and that’s pretty much it for the history of the braganzas . the rest just gets too far away from the time this roleplay is set so it doesn’t really matter .
this is the end of teo’s intro ! this took forever but man i loved doing the research ! hit that heart button if you’d like to plot . subscribe if you want to be apart of the shitty writing & grandiose imagery club . comment down below if you , too , have had a mother who was suspected of adultery .
