Crimes That Shook Britain (Yorkshire)
Tumblr media
The Crossbow Cannibal Between June 2009 and May 2010, Stephen Griffiths murdered three sex workers in Bradford, West Yorkshire.
His final attack was captured on CCTV and led to his arrest. He shot his last victim - Suzanne Blamires - with a crossbow as she tried to escape his flat, before stabbing her in the head with a knife.
In custody, he boasted to officers of West Yorkshire Police, ‘I’ve killed loads,’ and also claimed to have eaten body parts of his victims. It’s thought his other known victims - Shelley Armitage and Susan Rushworth - also suffered this fate. Griffiths, who called himself the Crossbow Cannibal, was jailed for life and will die in prison.
Tumblr media
The Murder of Jo Cox Jo Cox, 41, was MP for Batley and Spen, West Yorkshire - the constituency where she was born - and was married with two small children, aged 5 and 3.
On 16 June 2016, she was killed outside the library where she was to hold a constituency meeting. She was shot in the head and chest with a sawn-off hunting rifle and stabbed 15 times. Jo’s killer Thomas Mair - a far-right extremist - was convicted of murder on 23 November 2016 and was given a whole-life term.
Tumblr media
The Yorkshire Ripper Known as the Yorkshire Ripper, serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, from Bingley, in Bradford, West Yorkshire, was serving 20 consecutive life sentences after he was found guilty of 13 murders and seven attempted murders in 1981.
Over five years, he attacked women across West Yorkshire and Manchester, picking victims he believed to be prostitutes, though not all were.
Once arrested, he attempted to plead guilty to manslaughter, claiming diminished responsibility and saying God told him to kill prostitutes. Sutcliffe served most of his sentence in Broadmoor Hospital, a high-security psychiatric facility, but was judged sane enough to be moved to HMP Frankland in 2016.
Sutcliffe died at University Hospital of North Durham aged 74 on 13 November 2020, having been sent there with COVID-19. He had a number of underlying health problems including, obesity and diabetes. He reportedly refused treatment.

The Kidnapping of Shannon Matthews In February 2009, Karen Matthews, from Dewsbury, called the police when her daughter Shannon, 9, didn’t come home from school. What followed was the biggest investigation by West Yorkshire Police since the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper.
Every newspaper in the country reported on the case, with one offering a £50,000 reward for information leading to Shannon’s safe return.
Three weeks after she’d gone missing, Shannon was found alive at a flat less than a mile from her home. The flat belonged to Michael Donovan - the uncle of Karen’s boyfriend - Donovan was arrested and, soon after, so was Karen Matthews.
In November 2008, both denied charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice. Leeds Crown Court heard Karen had engineered Shannon’s kidnap with Donovan to claim the reward. Shannon had been drugged, tethered, and hidden inside a divan bed during her captivity.
Matthews and Donovan were found guilty of all charges and jailed for eight years. Both have now served their sentences.
Tumblr media
The Fox Killings Arthur Hutchinson, also known as The Fox, was wanted by police for rape. Then, on 23 October 1983, he broke into the Sheffield home of Basil and April Laitner.
Also there were their children Richard, 26, and Nicola, 18. Hutchinson killed Richard, Basil, and April, then raped Nicola at knife point before fleeing. He’d already spent five years in prison for attempting to murder his brother-in-law.
After a 39-day manhunt, The Fox was captured and serving life. He will never be released.
Tumblr media
The Murder of Sharon Beshenivsky Sharon Beshenivsky had been an officer with West Yorkshire Police for nine months in November 2005. On the day she was killed, the mum of five and her colleague went to an emergency call at Bradford travel agency.
There, they were fired on by armed robbers and Sharon was fatally wounded, her colleague seriously injured. Three men were convicted of her murder and got life. Three others were also jailed in connection to the killing.

On The Limits of the Muppets
So, I’m sitting here listening to a podcast where the hosts are having fun trying to cast the Muppets for Classic Literary Literature, and halfway through them casting the Muppets for P&P I realize there are two reasons why it absolutely cannot work for me on a feature film scale:
1) There is ONE (1) female muppet, in terms of “Muppets That Average People Can Name”. You *might* be able to up it to 3 if you throw in Janice and Camilla. The rest of the female Muppets are either throwaway or incredibly minor roles. There are too many important women in P&P, and they won’t work with Miss Piggy clones in most of the roles the way Wizard of Oz did, because the P&P characters are more nuanced, which leads into
2) The Muppets are based on one-note caricatures. P&P absolutely hinges on the complicated facets of Darcy’s personality. Kermit is far too mild for Darcy, Sam the Eagle too rigid, Gonzo too unselfconscious... and that’s leaving aside Fozzie and Rowlf, either of whom would be better cast as Bingley anyway. And while Darcy is the only character who absolutely cannot be reduced to a Muppet personality, several other characters would suffer gravely. (No matter how well Miss Piggy could pull off a Mrs. Bennet or a Lady Catherine.)
HOWEVER.
I have decided that one way to create/introduce more female Muppets would be to adapt a classic piece of literature with more female roles, so we have time to get to know the new Muppets.
Obviously Miss Piggy would have to be the lead, for maximum familiarity/comfort.
I suggest Little Women.
With a frame story.
The frame story is The Muppets Are Putting On Little Women (a la the Muppet Show’s conceit, or the original Muppet Movie, or Great Muppet Caper...) and Miss Piggy has bullied her way into the role of Jo. (If I’m thinking of “protagonists who fit Miss Piggy”, Jo works well enough; the fact that if I’m thinking of “Little Women characters who fit Miss Piggy” I actually come up with Amy first is all to the good, since it’ll allow for Drama in the frame story.)
That’s three more Muppets to create for the other sisters. Go wild! Come up with a female Muppet of no identifiable species (maybe a Whatchamacallit to go with the Whatever?), a female human as bizarrely shaped as Scooter (Skeeter may also be developed for the main cast, but not here; I want *new* female Muppets, not knockoffs of the existing male or female ones), a freaking squirrel if you want. Something new! And you have the space to create a personality that works for each of the March girls.
Let us get to know them in-character and backstage, and start building the Muppet ensemble you skipped the chance to make when you introduced Walter The Bland Man.

This Pride and Prejudice inspired meme, reading "Woman Relieved Soulmate Turned Out To Be In Same Socioeconomic Bracket," playfully references a topic of our in-class conversations on Monday: the manner in which Jane Austen's novels largely revolve around class, and serve as a social commentary on discrimination related to net worth and the prestige of one's familial relations. After beginning to read Jo Baker's "Longbourn," I began to question: is there irony in Austen's casual inclusion of the discriminatory practice of servantry in her novels? In my opinion, the only logical, modern answer is yes, and this novel may be an attempt at resolving this blatant conflict.
Sarah, the Bennet family's orphaned housemaid in the novel, brings into question the character of the Bennet sisters in a way that most readers likely haven't considered prior. Before reading Longbourn, I rarely questioned the idea of Jane as a picture of cordiality and grace, and Elizabeth as an almost-perfect heroine. However, on the contrary, at the start of the novel, Sarah states that "If Elizabeth had the washing of her own petticoats... she'd most likely be a slight more careful with them," demonstrating the P&P protagonist's lack of consideration regarding something as simple as alleviating a bit of the difficulty associated with her maid's numerous duties.
Furthermore, even more poignant and unapologetic with this second observation, Sarah describes how the Bennet sisters "spoke instructions at her from behind an embroidery hoop, or over the top of a book. She had scrubbed away their sweat, stains, and their monthly blood. She knew they weren't as rarified as angels, and so they just couldn't look her in the eye."
While Sarah does attribute some of this behavior to the girls' self-consciousness regarding being seen in their raw states, it presents quite the contrast to descriptions of Mr. Darcy by his staff, who hold him in high regard. Throughout Pride and Prejudice, the Bennet family is often portrayed as being of comparably lower status and treated as such, particularly considering the immense wealth of the Bingleys and the Darcys, and experiencing frustrations related to their position on the totem pole. Through Sarah, however, we can consider the potential hypocrisy of their behavior toward a previously dismissed, lower class.

Ahhhhh!! I can totally picture that scene of her and her sister just sitting in there room talking about how frustrating and a nuance Harry is, all while her sister believes she actually has a bit of a crush on him and vise-versa. Elizabeth is definitely going to be the one who says “I Knew It!” When Harry confesses his feelings to y/n. ☺️ 🌻
hehehe yes!!! i love the relationship between jo and her sisters in little women, so i only thought it was obvious that y/n would have an amazing relationship with her sisters in my fic!!! expect a lot of y/n and sister interactions in the next two chapters!!
AHHH yes the connection between liz and y/n reminds me of lizzie and jane in pride and prejudice when they are laying in bed together under the covers and are talking about mr darcy and mr bingley 😭 they’re just so sisterly and i love it so get ready for it!!!!
i just love the l/n’s 🥹🩵🩷🤍🥰
LOVE YOU, SUNNY!! HAVE A GREAT DAY MY LIGHT!!!

Tumblr media
To all the boys I've loved before by Jenny Han To all the boys I've loved before by Jenny Han is a teen romantic comedy literature. It centers on the life of Lara Jean. She is trying to solve the wreaking havoc in her life. It started, when her sister sent her five love letters to her five first crushes. Her fate then twisted with Peter Kavinsky. Their story had rough patches, but their love wins against all odds.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is a classical novel that revolves around the life of the Bennet family. The Bennet family has five daughters, Jane, Mary, Catherine, Lydia, and Elizabeth. When status, family, and friends came between the love of Jane and Charles Bingley, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth's disdain towards one another grew to become love. Another problem sprung when Lydia eloped with George Wickham. Mr. Darcy defied his family and status to change, help, and love Elizabeth Bennet.
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is a coming-of-age story popularized during the author's time. The novel revolves around the life of four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Elizabeth, and Amy. Jo is a tomboyish woman who does not depend on men and keeps her family afloat. After Elizabeth's death, Amy found love in Laurie. Meanwhile, Jo fell for Mr. Bhaer. Together, they built a local school on Jo's inherited house from their wealthy aunt March.
What happened to Monday, Dame Darlene Azar Rubinoff (2009) What Happened to Monday is a popular dystopian movie in 2017. It is alternately known as seven sisters. With the law forcing each family to produce an only child due to overpopulation, Terrence Settman hides his Septuplet children. Seven sisters lived a life of what happens to one happens to all. They live one life each day; one can only go out on a corresponding day to their name. Their father's tenacity and guidance to the sisters helped them reach adulthood. However, Monday establishes a sexual bond with a male leading to multiple troubles. Her sisters had to find Monday and solve the mystery of her disappearance.

Dear Jules,
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Cuando mi historial de altibajos me abrumó, dijiste: "Ups and downs, ups and downs, my dear.

Do you think certain typings tend to model more or burn more?
I think it’s rare, in fiction, to find a Hufflepuff/Hufflepuff main character who is JUST a double Puff. No burning, no models, no nothing.
Like Jesse Pinkman of Breaking Bad. Double Hufflepuff, burnt to a freakin crisp. Dean Winchester of Supernatural, same thing. (Although he... unburns. It takes him a hell of a long time, but he does it.)
These guys also pile on the protective layers. Quark from Deep Space Nine is a Double Puff desperately trying to look like a Double Slyth - because he can’t bear to let the people around him see how much he cares. Ciaphas Cain out of Warhammer 40K, same thing. Young Charles Xavier (as characterized in X-Men: First Class) is also a good example of a Double Puff modeling Double Slyth (wonder if that’s a pattern??)
My favorite DS9 character, Elim Garak, has *two* primary models and *four* secondary models stacked one up on top of another. A favorite original character, heavily inspired by Garak, is a Double Hufflepuff secret policeman trying so hard to model Double Ravenclaw - because he thinks that if he really were a double claw, everything would hurt so much less.
Pure Double Puffs who aren’t burned, and don’t have models, are usually paired off with another character who is fiercely loyal and wants to protect them. The Jeeves/Wooster dynamic, basically. Lizzie Bennet and Mr. Darcy bond over this in Pride & Prejudice - they’re both Slytherin primaries with beloved Double Puffs in their lives (Jane and Bingley.) This is also why I like interpreting the Good Omens miniseries Aziraphale as pure Double Puff, even though you can absolutely read him as a Ravenclaw Primary or a Slytherin secondary if you want. But I just like seeing healthy, badass Double Puffs in fiction - and Crowley becomes a really fun take on that classic Slyth (or maybe Burnt Puff?) protector.

the more the grief hits, the more i find myself identifying with susan. also, my writing is certainly not up to snuff- nowhere near where it used to be. if anyone would want to send in requests so that i have some prompts to write from, i’ll give them a shot. i’ll also do pride and prejudice or little women just to mix it up a bit. i need a way to deal with this that i can write, but i can’t just write my feelings apparently.
