Famous Architect Gaudí’s First Built House Opens to the Public for the First Time Ever
Ever been drawn towards Catalan architecture that embraces its majestic cultural treasures?
Well there is good news for you.  MoraBanc has taken up the responsibility of renovating a 19th-century building, designed by a Catalan architect,  to be repurposed as a cultural center that will open this October.
Built between 1883 and 1885, Casa Vicens is one of  the very first homes designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. An epitome of history and heritage, this 130-year-old home has been used mostly as a private residence since its inception, denying ordinary people to explore its beauty. As historical records suggest, Casa Vicens was initially commissioned by the tile manufacturer Manuel Vicens i Montaner as a summer home. However, it was sold in 1899 to the Jover family, who were the owners of the spectacular  house for more than a century.
The building is one of eight UNESCO World Human Heritage Site in Barcelona on which restoration works have begun since 2015. And this exciting project is being led by architects José Antonio Martínez Lapeña and Elías Torres, of Martínez Lapeña-Torres Arquitectes, and David García of Daw Office.
So get ready to see many of Gaudís original designs inside this museum when it opens at the end of this year.

Today's archidose #1002: '100 Years, 100 Landscape Designs'
Although it's been more than a few months since my last book, 100 Years, 100 Landscape Designs, came out last fall, I'd yet to put together a "Today's archidose" on the book as I did with 100 Years, 100 Buildings in a more timely manner the year before. Like its predecessor, the book highlights 100 projects, in this case parks, gardens, and other landscape designs built over the last 100 years, with the gimmick that there is only one building per year based on completion or some other important milestone (a trickier thing to nail down with landscapes than buildings). Here are photos of 25 landscapes culled from the archidose Flickr pool (and some of my own that I just uploaded to Flickr) to give a taste of what's in the book. For more information on 100 Years, 100 Landscape Designs, which is published by Prestel, check out the page I set up for the book. Mouseover or click the photos below to see who photographed each landscape design. 1921 Östra Kyrkogården | Sigurd Lewerentz | Malmö, Sweden: 1926 Naumkeag | Fletcher Steele | Stockbridge, Massachusetts, United States: 1928 Sunnyside Gardens | Clarence S. 19th-Century Residence Designed by Architect Antoni Gaudí Will Soon Be Open to the Public
Casa Vicens was the first home designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (best known for the Sagrada Família in Barcelona). Built between 1883 and 1885, the building has been a private residence for most of its 130-year history. However, thanks to MoraBanc, who purchased the building in 2014, the building will soon be open to the public!
For the past two years architects José Antonio Martínez Lapeña and Elías Torres (of Martínez Lapeña-Torres Arquitectes) and David García (of Daw Office) have been working on extensive restorations to help transform Casa Vicens into a cultural centre, “home” to both permanent and rotating exhibitions. See more images of the site below or check it out in person this October!
