25th December - ‘A Saviour has been born to you’, Reflection on the readings for the feast of Christmas

Feast of Christmas

Christmas is a time when we feel the need to connect with others. We often send Christmas cards to people we wouldn’t otherwise connect with. We like to gather with family and friends. People have more people in their homes at Christmas time than at any other time. Many people make a special effort to connect with those who live alone. We draw them into our circle at this time of the year. We also feel the need to connect with each other as people of faith. We gather in church at Christmas in greater numbers. We want to be with other members of our faith family for the feast of Christmas.

The efforts we make to connect with others at this time may reflect our awareness that at Christmas we are celebrating God’s efforts to connect with us. At the heart of Christmas is the good news that God became flesh in the child that was born to Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem. God came among us as a vulnerable new born child. This child was just like any new born child, and yet, as the angels announced to the shepherds, this child was also the Saviour, the Christ, the Lord. God could not have come any closer to us that this. We are all drawn to a new born child. We cannot take our eyes off the wonderful bundle of new life that has entered our world. We feel a desire to hold the child. In taking flesh as a new born child, God was inviting each of us to draw near. We all feel at home in the presence of a new born child. Although Jesus was born homeless, God was calling out to us through this child to be at home in God’s presence. The writer, C. K. Chesterton, speaks of Bethlehem as ‘the place where God is homeless and all men are at home’.

The adult Jesus would go on to say that in his Father’s house there are many dwelling places. He was speaking of the kingdom of heaven as God’s spacious and welcoming home. The stable where Jesus was born is also God’s spacious and welcoming home. There is room there for us all, just as there was room for the poor shepherds from Bethlehem and the exotic stargazers from the East. After his baptism, the adult Jesus would spend his whole ministry calling people home to God, revealing by his words and deeds God’s welcoming and hospitable love. Jesus would have identified himself with the father in the parable of the prodigal son who ran out towards his lost son to bring him home, welcoming him with lavish hospitality. The question of whether his younger son deserved it or not didn’t arise for his father, even though it did for his older brother. This Christmas we are all invited to find our home with God, with the child, Jesus, whose other name is Emmanuel, God with us. Saint Helena was the mother of the first Christian Roman Emperor, Constantine. The English writer Evelyn Waugh wrote a novel about her called ‘Helena’. Those who knelt in the straw that first Christmas night were welcoming God’s loving gift of this special child. Jesus was not just God’s gift to Mary and Joseph, but God’s gift to each one of us. As the angel said to the shepherds, ‘Today, in the town of David, a Saviour has been born to you’. We are all included in that ‘you’. As we kneel or stand before the crib this Christmas, we are invited to welcome Jesus, God’s wonderful gift, into our own lives, to make a home for him in our hearts, in our families, in our communities. We don’t leave him in the crib. We take him with us, because the Lord wants to make his home in us, in our hearts, in our lives. He wants to remain with us, to dwell within us. In the words of that well known hymn, we can confidently pray, ‘Abide with me, fast falls the eventide’. The Lord wants to abide with us as light in our darkness. The birth of Jesus was a night time event, but into that darkness came a great light. In the words of Luke’s gospel, ‘the glory of the Lord shone around’ the shepherds as they watched over their sheep in the darkness. The Lord continues to be a light in our darkness today. He continues to shine the light of God’s gracious love upon us, no matter where we are on our life journey. We can all pray in the words of another well-known hymn, ‘Lead kindly light, amid the encircling gloom, lead thou me on’. The Lord’s kindly light that shone on Bethlehem continues to shine upon us today. This Christmas each of us is invited by the Lord to step into his loving light and to become the bearers of his light to each other

Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Fadeyev , Fadeyev aynı zamanda Fadeev olarak da yazılır (11 Aralık [24 Aralık, Yeni Tarz], 1901, Kimry , Tver, Rusya — 13 Mayıs 1956, Moskova , Rusya , SSCB), Rus romancı proleter edebiyatının önde gelen savunucusu ve teorisyeni ve edebiyat siyasetinde etkili olan yüksek bir Komünist Parti görevlisi.

Fadeyev gençliğini Ural Dağları'nda ve doğu Sibirya'da geçirerek eğitimini Vladivostok'ta aldı. 1918'de Komünist Partiye katıldı ve Sibirya'da hem Beyaz ordulara hem de Japonlara karşı savaştı. 1945'te Genç Muhafızlar romanını yazdı. Kitap, II. Dünya Savaşı sırasında işgal altında bulunan Krasnodon (Ukrayna SSC) şehrinde Nazilere karşı mücadele veren Genç Muhafızlar isimli yer altı Komsomol teşkilatının gerçek olaylarından esinlenmiştir. Roman nedeniyle Fadeyev 1946 yılında Stalin Ödülü almıştır. 1948 yılında kitap, Sovyet filmi Genç Muhafızlar konu olmuştur ve daha sonra 1964 yılında kitabın hatalarının düzeltildiği revize baskı yayınlanmıştır. Fadeyev, Josef Stalin'in gözdesiydi, onu "dünyanın bilinen en büyük hümanisti" olarak ilan etti. 1940'lar boyunca, Sovyetler Birliği'nin önde gelen yazar ve bestecilerinin çoğuna karşı eleştiri ve zulüm uygulayan Jdanov doktrinini uyguladı. Bununla birlikte, Mihail Şolohov'un arkadışıydy. Fadeyev ünlü bir sahne oyuncusu Angelina Stepanova ile evlendi (1905–2000).

Hayatının sonlarında sürekli alkol kullanımı yüzünden şiddetlenmiş nöroloji temelli sıkıntılar gelişti. Bazı kaynaklar bunun sebebinin Nikita Kruşçev dönemindeki Stalinizmin lanetlenmesi olduğunu iddia ederler. Sonunda Peredelkino'da bulunan daçasında kalbinden kendini vurarak intihar etti, arkasında bıraktığı mektupta Parti'nin yeni liderlerine karşı olumsuz tavrı görülebilir. Ölümü, komşusu Boris Pasternak'ın bir hicvine neden olmuştur.
