This is a super long Headcanon about Austria’s and Hungary’s relationship. It’s connected to my Austria’s Sexual Preferences HC.

 WARNING for Austria being an ass, angst, toxic relationship patterns and some upsetting historical stuff like war and military dictatorships. If you love fluffy cute AusHun and hate that stuff, it may just not be your cup of tea :-).

A quick rundown of some Hungary/Austria history:

“In early stages (1500s) the lands that were ruled by the Habsburg Hungarian kings were regarded as both “the Kingdom of Hungary” and “Royal Hungary”. Royal Hungary (…) was de facto a Habsburg province.” (wiki)

“Rákóczi’s War of Independence (1703–11) was the first significant attempt to topple the rule of the Habsburgs over Hungary. The war was fought by a group of noblemen, wealthy and high-ranking progressives and was led by Francis II Rákóczi. The insurrection was unsuccessful, ending with the Treaty of Szatmár; however, the Hungarian nobility managed to partially satisfy Hungarian interests.” (wiki)

Later on Joseph II Habsburg (1765–1790), Holy Roman Emperor and the Archduke of Austria, abolished local governments in countries that were parts of the Habsburg empire, including Hungary. He established German as the official language of Hungary and divided the country into 10 parts, ignoring the historical divisions that existed until then. He unified Hungarian and Austrian administrations. All of this was met with opposition from some of the strongest groups in Hungary (like the magnates and the Magyar nobility), but they were ignored. Austro-Hungarian conflict was something that has been stewing in the background of the Habsburg empire for years and revolutions were not unheard of. All of this came to a head in 1848 when the Hungarian Revolution began and the Austro-Hungarian war followed.

The biggest event that kick-started the revolution was the illegal act of revoking Hungarian April Laws by the Austrian monarch. April laws were laws established by the Hungarian parliment and ratified by the last Hungarian king (bc even tho under Austrian rule, the Kingdom of Hungary still had some autonomy, such as the parliament). Their aim was to modernize Hungary into a parliamentary democracy. The new Austrian monarch, Francis Joseph, didn’t like that and revoked them. This was a completely illegal act, he had no right nor authority to overwrite the hungarian parliment - but he still did. This really crossed the line with the Hungarians, who - as mentioned above - already had some problems with the way Austria was domineering over Hungary and history of revolting. So it began: “Hungarians brought 12 demands to the Austrian leadership, among them freedom of the press, civil and religious equality, and a national bank. A bloodless revolution took place on March 15, 1848, and the first independent Hungarian government was formed with Lajos Batthyány as Prime Minister.” The revolution itself was bloodless, but the war that followed wasn’t. Austria got help from Russia and the combined Russian and Austrian armies ended up winning the conflict. Hungary was yet again under complete Habsburg control. After Hungary lost, it was put under brutal martial law by Austria and Hungarian generals and members of the parliament were executed, including Lajos Batthyány who - ironically - was trying to reach some kind of agreement with the Habsburg dynasty throughout the revolution. They thanked him with a firing squad. Stay classy, Roderich. Very heavy taxation was put on the Hungarian people as punishmen. All of this was a deciding factor in how the future Hungarian/Austrian relations looked like - the “Hungarian problem” became one of the hottest issues for the Hapsburg monarchy for years to come. The military dictatorship and absolutist rule that Austria introduced over Hungary lasted for 18 years and ended in ‘67 with the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, in which a dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary was established. “The territorial integrity of Kingdom of Hungary was restored. The Compromise partially re-established the former sovereignty of the Kingdom of Hungary, however being separate from, but no longer subject to the Austrian Empire. The agreement also restored the old historic constitution of the Kingdom of Hungary.” (wiki)

Why did Austria agreed to the compromise after almost 20 years of martrial law and terror? WELL “As a consequence of the Second Italian War of Independence and the Austro-Prussian War, the Habsburg Empire was on the verge of collapse in 1866, as these wars caused monumental state debt and a financial crisis. The Habsburgs were forced to reconcile with Hungary, to save their empire and dynasty.”

Headcanon: I personally HC that Austria and Hungary got married in 1570 as a direct result of the personal union between both countries. Until then, the Kingdom of Hungary was ruled by two kings: one Hungarian, and one Austrian, but in 1570s the Hungarian king abdicated in favor of the Austrian ruler. And ever since, until the Habsburg empire fell apart, the Austrian monarch was also crowned as the Hungarian king. So I consider this event the beginning of their marriage. (I’ll explain why I moved the marriage this early at the end of the post. Hint - for narration purposes :D to me a HC has to create a coherent story first and foremost)

They did love each other, and tho their marriage was mostly a political union, they were both happy to start a life together as husband and wife. But the relationship itself was unhealthy, especially for Hungary.

The simplest way I can explain how I see it is: a young, naivee woman in love marries a controlling man, who also loves her, but still wants to completely dominate her. She is shocked by the reality of mariage with him but tries to accept the new way things are now (still, the hungarian revolution of early 1700s shows that internally, she has a problem with the lack of equality).

She convinces herself that her rebellious tendencies are the real problem here, as this is what he tells her, and tries to become the Perfect Wife.

The marriage is a long one and deteriorates very slowly, from Happily In Love, through Disappointment and then Growing Resentment, into an open conflict and the escalation of toxicity. So a story as old as time.

Longer version: Austria was controlling and saw himself as the authority in their relationship: she was to listen to him, never argue with him, speak German to him, be proper and refined and play by HIS rules. She was to completely leave her old customs and ways of life behind (she was a free-spirited horse-riding warrior, he wanted a proper lady in a corset who only speaks about the weather, music and art. Austrian, preferably. She wanted to feel the wind in he hair, he though that was inappropriate. etc).

There was no place for equality here and there was no place for her true nature either. He only accepted her more wild self when he needed military help from her, but then she was to put on her (Austrian) gown again. This was a shock for an outspoken, independent and strong woman, but Hungary at first did believe that this was the best for her (’we’re stronger together’ etc).

Also, she was really in love. To the point of being willing to give up many of her freedoms and passions to be “the perfect mate” Austria expected her to be. She lost a lot of herself during those long years of trying to please him. After all, there was a lot about Austria she admired - he was artistic, subtle, refined, had this air of royalty about him. He could be such a gentleman - she was not used to being treated like a lady, as she was always “one of the guys”, and truly enjoyed it. She LOVED his music. He gave her expensive gifts and composed sonatas and poetry for her. Etc. But still - she wanted equality and to be seen for who she really is, and he was only willing to be the dashing gentleman when she played the role of the quiet, obedient SO. Resentment and anger rose in her and her romantic love and attraction for Austria began to rot away. The Perfect Wife role was at first something she got used to and though she could pull off, but with time, it got more and more frustrating.

When in 1848 the Austrian monarch decided to illegally overwrite her parliament - it was a boiling point for her. She saw red and grabbed her weapon. Tho the attempts of her leader, Lajos Batthyány, to work out a compromise with the Austrian monarch tell me that she did still want to make the marriage work and still hoped that they could become a better couple - just on different terms. But, of course, Austria was not into that. The total fallout of their relationship at this point might have seem unexpected to some, as they did pretend to be the Perfect Power Couple when in front of others, and she was discreet with her angst. But in reality this tension has been rising for years and the marriage has been an unhappy one for some time now.

And from Austria’s side, the sad reality was - he married a woman that was just too strong. That’s why he put such drastic measures in place after the Revolution failed - he wanted to dominate her once and for all and have his Perfect Marriage. He didn’t do it because he was vengeful or evil, he was just selfish and egocentric. In some messed up way, he thought she still could be happy with him, IF ONLY SHE DID WHAT HE TOLD HER TO.

The war and the brutal dictatorship that followed the Revolution were the darkest time in their relationship. It pretty much ended the intimacy they had. During this period they would get into loud arguments, throw things, he would then punish her by being even more controlling, she would take revenge in small ways like ruining his fav shirts by accident and started to think about a divorce. When Austria lost his wars with Prussia and Italy - she was on top of that, pretty much immediately demanding more rights. He had no strength to oppose her at this point. She even felt sorry for him, seeing how weak and wounded he was. Some old feelings resurfaced. The relationship abruptly got better, as she helped him heal while he began treating her better. He apologized for the way he treated her. He said that being at the brink of death made him realize the errors of his way. She was happy and agreed to re-new their vowes (the beggining of Dual Monarchy) - but she never forgot how ugly he could act. Things were never the same again. Something in the romantic relationship just died for her - most importantly, she never trusted him again. He could say all he wanted about how he’s sorry and would never do it again, the reality was - and she recognized it - that he only said those things when he was scared of death and desperately need her. When he was strong and felt well, he held her in an iron fist and forced martial law on her. The Dual Monarchy began, but the the romance was over. They still played the roles of hudband and wife in front of others, but slept in different beds.

This is tragic, because the love they had for each other was real. It was just totally ruined by Austria’s need to be in control of the relationship and inability to see her as an equal. They had totally incompatible ideas of how the relationship should look like.

When they divorced after WW1, Hungary did not suffer. To her, the divorce already happened - she mentally divorced him years ago, all that was left was a husk of the marriage and an old ring. For Austria, it was worse, as he still hoped they could rebuild and was forced to accept the rality that nope, its not happening. He took it badly.

Today they are exes that consider each other friends but Hungary would never want to return to a romantic relationship with him, as she believes that even tho Austria seems more chill nowadays, he would not be able to keep his controlling tendencies in check. This whole thing taught her that she never wants to change for a man.

The relationship between them is very complex and runs deep - tho they had their share of conflicts and toxicity, that does not mean good things never happened. They also know each other incredibly well and there is closeness there that neither of them wants to let go of.

Explanation: I moved their wedding from the birth of Austro-Hungary to an earlier date, because to me personally it makes more sense narration-wise. I don’t think Hungary would ever agree to marry him if the Revolution of 1848 and the bloody martial law already happened - this, to me at least, reads more like a dramatic conclusion to a long, difficult relationship that is becoming more toxic with time and then implodes, not something that happened before the marriage starts. So sorry for it not being very canon-friendly, but to me, it just creates a pretty coherent, emotional story of a downfall of a marriage that had potential, as there were honest feelings involved, but the dude was an ass.

This whole HC was born in baby form when I watched the episode in which Prussia wants Hungary to go hunting, mentions she used to like it, and she refuses and instead prefers to clean Austria’s house.  He then comments that she changed. It was played as lighthearted and funny and I do recognize that Hima probably wanted to show that she got more mature while Pru is still like a kid, but it actually made me really sad for her. Then I watched the show Freud on Netflix and got interested in the anti-austrian movements in Hungary (LOL sorry I know this sounds really silly! ^^’ it’s a good show tho). And it kinda fitted - she wanted to hunt, she was just putting herself in smaller and smaller boxes as the Perfect Wife bc Austria expected that and she still hoped it will make her dream of Lived Happily Ever After come true.

highschool  graduation  is  a  sigh  of  relief  ,  no  longer  hassled  &  tormented  by  peers  that  you  tried  and  tried  to  gain  respect  from .  BUT  NOW  WHAT ?  you  are  at  the  very  bottom  of  the  food - chain  ,  and  you  have  been  brought  up  with  nothing  but  the  tendency  to  only  see  your  faults   ━   somehow  ,  you’re  offered  apprenticeship  at  a  local  automobile  mechanic  in  exchange  for  free  labor   ━   not  ideal  when  you’re  seeking  to  pull  your  own  weight  in  that  new  apartment  with  your  sister  that  neither  can  really  afford .  but  you  make  it  work  ,  you  take  up  odd  jobs  wherever  you  can  find  them   :   drip  ‘n  dry  laundromat  ,  the  hollow  diner  ,  even  your  very  own  from  home  computer  repair  business  that  never  really  takes  off  ,  but  it  pulls  enough  to  get  by  until  you  can  navigate  your  way  under  a  hood  ,  enough  to  say   :   THIS  IS  ALL  ME  ,  eugene  lane  did  this  !    and  that  is  enough .

Temptress (John Seed X OC Deputy)

John watches intently through binoculars with his interest peaked as the newly appointed deputy arrives at a resistance outpost. He’d only settled along to treeline to watch the outpost out of curiosity. It had previously belonged to him, until two days ago, when an unknown woman, fresh from out of town, had taken it over and claimed it as one of the resistance safehouses. He was hoping to gain information from his little stakeout; maybe uncover a secret route between resistance bases or perhaps lay eyes on some new weapons that the resistance was hoping to surprise him with. He wasn’t expecting this new face to stroll into his path, but as he sits on the top of the hill, sheltered by the surrounding trees, he finds himself oddly pleased that she has.

He adjusts his binoculars, zooming in on her as she makes the walk from her car to the front of the building, repeatedly tossing her car keys in the air as she does so. The way she walks captivates John. The way she swings her hips from side to side in those little denim shorts. Her legs are glistening with sweat under the summer sun and they have John feeling an all-too-familiar feeling in his chest. One that bubbles up and whirls around inside him, threatening to spill out of his mouth in the form of giddy laughter.

Lust.

John is familiar with all seven of the deadly sins, but it’s been so long since he felt that one and he’d thought those days were long behind him. What would Joseph think if he here now? If he could see him watching her from the hilltop. John looks nervously over his shoulder, convinced that he, too, is being watched by someone; someone who will waste no time in running to Joseph with the news that John Seed, Herald of the Holland Valley, is a sinner. That he’s impure. That he’s irredeemable.

John follows the mysterious new deputy as she stops to talk to a resistance member. She’s animated in the way that she speaks to him, throwing her hands around and turning around on the spot as the man laughs along with her. John wonders what she’s talking about. Perhaps she’s telling the man of an encounter she’d had with one of John’s own people. Maybe she’s telling him about claiming another outpost; a battle that John will hear about later. She says her goodbyes to the man and heads inside the building.

“No, no, no,” John mutters to himself. “Come back, girl.”

As if God himself had heard John’s mutterings, the woman appears in front of a window on the upper floor of the building. John gets up and quickly moves along the treeline for a better angle, sitting back down again behind a fallen tree. He adjusts his binoculars once more, zooming in as far as they’ll go. The woman moves around in an old break room that looks to be repurposed as a dormitory from what John can see of it. She closes the door and heads to the bed next to the window, where she begins to unbutton her shirt.

John looks away, knowing full well that the church – nor God himself – would ever allow this kind of behaviour. Fornication is a sin and voyeurism is just as bad. But John was never much good at self-control, and he raises the binoculars to his eyes again.

She moves around the room in nothing but her underwear now, and John’s heart beats heavily inside his ribcage, each beat thudding in his ears. She’s completely bewitching; a dangerous temptress, sent by the devil himself to lure John into a trap. John is certain of this.

So why is he willingly following?

John gathers his thoughts for a moment as the woman parades around in front of him, dancing in the sunlight that spills in through the window that he watches her through. She’s blissfully unaware that anyone is watching her… or maybe she isn’t. Maybe she knows John is watching. Maybe she likes it.

John’s jeans begin to tighten and he swallows the guilt down with a hard gulp. He reaches one hand down and fumbles with his belt. Finally unbuckling it, he thumbs open the button on his jeans. He takes another look over his shoulder, taking his time to check every single inch of the horizon to make sure no one will ever know that this happened, and – more importantly –  to make sure Joseph will never catch wind of it.

He turns back around and peers through the binoculars again, but is left deflated when he discovers the room empty.

“Oh, no… No, no, no.” He scans the outpost in search for her, his eyes gliding over the scene. He’s met by nothing but crates of preserves and patrolling resistance members. “Where did you go, my darling?”

“Lookin’ for someone?” a woman's voice asks.

John’s heart stops and he immediately drops the binoculars from his face. A couple of metres down the hill stands the woman, now dressed and with her arms folded across her chest. She looks angry – as though could kill John then and there – but there’s a kindness in her eyes, hidden behind that rage. She looks even sweeter up close and John rises to his feet, fastening his jeans as he does so.

“I was just –“

“You were just what?” she asks, raising her eyebrow. “Go on. I’d love to hear you try and explain this one.”

John is at a loss for words and he opts for a shrug instead.

“So,” she says, making her way up the hill and stopping in front of him. “You thought it’d be a good idea to watch a woman while she changed? I don’t have much love for Peeping Toms.”

John gazes at her as she stands before him, her brows furrowed and her glossy, silver hair blowing across her face in the breeze. He’s completely smitten. Falling in love was not on his itinerary when he’d gotten dressed this morning, yet here he was… though he finds it hard to complain. He hasn’t felt this alive in a long time. The blood is finally pumping through his veins again – his heart skipping in his chest. For the first time in forever, he feels good. He wants to kiss her, pick her up and spin her around, tell her “thank you – thank you for making me feel like a person again.”

But he doesn’t.

He stays quiet.

Minutes tick by as the two of them watch each other in silence. The only noise that can be heard is the wind picking up and whooshing past their ears as a thunderstorm rolls in from the mountains up North. The woman chews on the inside of her cheek and John puts his hand in the pocket of his coat. Just as the woman opens her mouth to speak, she’s interrupted by a resistance member who has approached the bottom of the hill.

“Lucy,” he calls, cupping his mouth so that his voice is strong enough to be heard over the wind. “You’re needed down here!”

Her name is Lucy. A name that means light. A name that fits her so perfectly.

Lucy looks over her shoulder and waves her hand at him. “Okay, I’ll be right there.”

John turns to leave with his head hung low, sorry that his meeting with the love of his life has come to an end already.

“Wait, I didn’t catch your name,” she calls.

John stops in his tracks. She doesn’t know who he is yet? He plans his answer carefully, painfully aware that he’ll never have her if she discovers who he is. And he can’t lose her yet; he’s only just found her.

“My name is Duncan,” he smiles, turning back to face her.

“Okay... Well, Duncan, if I catch you watching me again, I’ll kill you.” She says it in slight jest, but John knows she’ll do it. He knows what this new playmate is capable of; her handy work is scattered all over Hope County – he sees it every time one of his men returns with a truck full of bodies.

“It was nice to meet you, Lucy,” he says politely.

“Yeah, I’m sure it was,” she smirks. “See you around.”

She tucks her hair behind her ear and makes her way back down the hill, trudging through the mud and battling the wind that threatens to knock her off her feet.

“Yes,” John smiles, looking over the binoculars in his hand before clipping them to his belt. “Indeed, you will.”

in late 1997 grace and quentin wolff were a lil surprised w/ a son who they hadn’t planned on at all ? they actually hadn’t wanted kids at at all, but it was love at first sight and he changed their whole mind abt the idea of a family 

growing up in the small town of bristol, connecticut was boring. sure, as a kid, everything seems big. but even bristol seemed small to little linc and after getting bored of going to the same park every week, his parents decided to put him in a couple different activities around town in hopes of keeping him busy

luckily, it sort of worked. linc started to love heading out every day to play with the other kids, except like almost every other boy his age, he wasn’t the biggest fan of football or basketball. for some reason, he loved frisbee. just going out and throwing it around with his friends or parents was enough to make him happy. he was a pretty simple kid to please, tbh

frisbee became more than a hobby as he grew older and was good enough to be on an actual team ( his parents didn’t even know they had teams for that sort of stuff until linc announced it if we’re being honest ) 

as the years of ultimate frisbee went on, things changed. his parents adopted a little girl from the next state over, jasmine, who he loves more than anything and would protect from jokes about her being adopted at all costs ?? kids bullied her constantly when they were younger and he made it rather obvious that that wasn’t going to fly w/ him 

high school made linc realize that ultimate frisbee wasn’t exactly a career and in a panic, he signed up for some computer classes after hearing about the easy a’s it would earn him

except it ended up not just being an easy grade for him. linc loved the basic codes they learned and how they could change what he was looking at on the screen in just a few clicks. it was fascinating to him and soon enough, it was his new obsession. with help from his tech teacher junior year, he started a few computer science classes early at his local college with the full support of his parents. this was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. 

it was no question for him to major in computer science by the time applying for colleges came around. he applied to the closest colleges that had his major, hoping he could stay close enough to visit his family more than once a semester. however, he ended up with the school that offered him the most financial aid, it being a smaller school in jersey city. 

despite the bigger distance than he would have preferred, linc quickly grew to love the school and the city that was so much bigger than bristol. it brought out a new side of him and helped him grow into the twenty year old he is now 

even though linc was one of the most outgoing kids in his elementary school, he’s on the quieter side these days. he’s not shy or awkward, simply just pickier about who he makes an effort for. he gives off that guy in the movie whose dark and mysterious vibes, you know ?? he gets insulted when someone mentions it, though

so f*cking smart ! he got a full ride and actually loves his difficult classes ? in fact, the more difficult, the better for him. crazy

not only is he smart when it comes to computers and coding, but just in general he’s a pretty wise guy ?? not the first person you’d come to for advice but when you do, you won’t regret it ok 

super realistic ? kind of a bummer ? bc people his age are all about dreaming abt being rich and traveling and he’s like lol that’s not happening when you spend all of your money on alcohol billy ! alk;jsf he’s kind of annoying which is partly why he only has like . three friends if he’s lucky 

also kinda ties along w/ him being critical ?? will judge you if you do stupid shit a lot and he’s not very shy abt it at all even if he barely knows u ? it’s so bad he literally can’t shut up sometimes abt his opinions, and it’s even worse bc he refuses to ever think that he’s wrong

trying to correct him is ineffective bc he’s always right in his head and ur wrong if you don’t believe him . he will walk away if you try too hard to argue w/ him 

smokes weed, that’s all abt that really ? he likes it and it makes him feel mellow y’know ?? he’s cool like that ( or he thinks he is at least )

big ass nerd, but that’s probably really obvious considering his major and the fact that he loves ultimate frisbee

makes playlists for people, yes ik it’s cheesy but he’s just the type okay ?? it worked out that he just makes playlists for people he’s close to and this is the only thing he’s ever shy abt 

oh, is also very shy/secretive about how much he wants to feel wanted , bc despite his parents never abandoning him for some reason he just ?? feels this ? and can’t make it stop ? so yeah he just needs someone to tell him that they want him around bc it’d be nice

frenemy. someone who constantly tries to prove him wrong but for some reason, he appreciates it/finds it funny. they’re the one person he can tolerate trying to correct him, or at least he can most of the time. other times he just shrugs them off and tries to give them the cold shoulder for a day or two just to piss them off. 

crush. this boy needs someone to make playlists for that he says are just bc they’re close friends. he’s not the most open about his feelings as he’s scared that they won’t be reciprocated but he can’t really help but be the tiniest bit open about this one even if he ends up getting hurt in the end.

They claimed that they inherited the planet from their ancestors 3,000 years ago but, of course, didn't win because there's an international treaty that states that everything in the solar system, except Earth itself, is the property of everyone in the world. 11: Death Photoshoot If your beloved one passed away how would you grieve him? Do you know how the Victorians did? They had a habit of photographing everyone from mom and dad through to dead infant babies, with the bizarre ritual of Post-Mortem photography starting in the nineteenth century and continuing well into the twentieth. This practice was supposed to help people get through the grieving process. This region is one of at most historical significance but Alexandria wasn't always the most important place on Egypt's northern coast centuries. Years before its construction came the fabled city of thanas also known as Heraklion and once thought to be a myth located 15 miles northeast of modern-day Alexandria is an area now submerged beneath the ocean. Initially, the more prosperous settlement Phonus Heraklion was a huge trading port until a devastating earthquake and tsunami around the year and caused large parts of it to sink into the sea. Helga gets Eirik some local-made leather accessories, leather is the speciality of the elves anyway, he does have use for some quality gloves/vests/whatever, he bring Helga flowers, it may not seem much but the light in Helga’s face when she sees them is priceless

I’d say Maeve would have a some kind of heart disease later on but only when she’s actually old and vulnerable for things like that, and the fact that Japanese have high risk of such diseases because of their genes (just like Finns sadly) idk about Joe, she’d still be able to look after herself and her diet, Joe helping is much appreciated

What sorts of things would they give each other “just because”? Joe’s little souvenirs from his work trips, be it bracelet or flower, Mae loves them and the fact that Joe thinks about her while away. Maeve would get something for Joe as well if she sees something that just screams ‘JOseph Batbayar’ to her and she will get it

Which member is more likely to fall asleep on the other member? Does Joe like boob pillow? I see no reason not to like boob pillow. Joe’s lap is the perfect size for Mae she’ll make a nest in his hoodie and maybe fall asleep while watching a movie with him, it is up to him how he manages to get them both to bed

Joe bc as you said he sees it as his duty as the man™ to take care of his lady, even though he himself had little trouble handling said lady, if she gets too hurt or drugged i see Joe cracking his knuckles and ready to shut down the light of whoever did that

Being in a forest wasn't how he thought he would be spending his twenty-first birthday. Usually these birthdays would be sent spending at a casino or something, maybe a bar for first time drinkers. He's been drinking since he was sixteen, so it's nothing new to him. Maybe he wouldn't be questioned as much, but it didn't mean much to him. Besides, this was something he had to do. FAITH was glad to have JOE with him for this, otherwise he wouldn't be able to anchor himself down to do it. He receives a text message from DEREK, notifying him that he'll be there in less than ten minutes. He lets out a breath and he looked to his friend. "He's almost here." He tells him, running a hand through his hair nervously. He can't screw this up.

Even though he agreed to partake in this plan, JOE's starting to have doubts on this. Memories of his five murders back in California are starting to come back to him, but he didn't want to show his guilt and doubts. The older male taps the stirring wheel of his car which was parked hidden in a campsite nervously. "Alright, wanna go over the plan one more time ? " He asked even though he knew it multiple times. He just wants to know just in case the plan backfired.

FAITH nodded and tapped his fingers against his knee as he thought over it. "Right.. when he gets here I'll meet up with him in the clearing with the fake bag of cash." He started to explain, setting the bag he was talking about on his lap. He knew that's what DEREK wanted, but he wasn't about to hand over that much money. "You stay behind a few feet 'cause as long as you do, whoever he brings with him they will stand back as well." It was better for DEREK to know straight up he has someone with him rather than let him find out and risk losing his friend immediately. They don't play around. "And when he walks away with the bag, I'll shoot him in the back of the head." Images of his dad's deceased body flash through his mind for a second, and he shakes those away. "And we gotta take cover behind a tree or something immediately."

JOE listens attentively at the plan once more, nodding at each step. "Got it, and if we have to get rid of DEREK's body, I have some stuff in the trunk we can use." He suggested, turning off the car engine once a shadowy figure was walking towards the clearing. "He's here, mate. Let's do this." The older male said opening the door and shuts it.

FAITH took a deep breath as the other had gotten out. He grips onto the door handle a little harshly, the shadow figures reminding him of the previous January. When the same figure had been running after him, having no idea where he would come from. ​This time I've got you​, he thought and he gets out of the vehicle with the bag. He checked his pocket to make sure he had his gun then he shut the door and he slowly ascended towards the clearing where he found DEREK waiting with his men a good few feet behind him. "Ah, FAITH ! " The blond man smiled, almost sickeningly sweet. It was as faux as his intentions. "You're actually here. Thought you might've had second thoughts." His eyes fall on JOE. "And you've brought a friend ? " FAITH licks over his lips once he's stood a good distance in front of him. "I've got your money, DEREK." He showed him the bag, which makes the man peer at it in interest. "We've got our deal ? " The man smiled to him. "As soon as you pass over the money, you have my word. I'll leave you alone." FAITH chewed his lower lip and he tossed him the bag.

JOE follows FAITH to the clearing but stops his tracks so he stands behind the short male and near his car for a quick getaway. He places his hands behind his back which a gun was tucked in and stands to watch the plan in action. When DEREK mentioned him as a friend, JOE glimpses at him in the eye then averts the other guy behind DEREK and glances back to FAITH. The male watches intently and waits for the next move right when the older male gets the fake bag of money.

DEREK caught the bag, holding it in one hand simply to weigh to make sure it felt like money. FAITH's nerves were all over the place as DEREK opened to check. The blond stared for a few seconds before closing it and tossing it to one of his men. "Your debt has been paid." He announced, and FAITH was able to relax a little that he actually fell for the false money. It looked more real these days - which FAITH was thankful for. "Feel free to lose my number then." The brunet told him, making the blond's lip quirk up slightly with a laugh. "Funny.. but you know mines if you wanna do another." He turns around to walk away and that's when FAITH's hand made its way to his pocket, brandishing the weapon and clicking off the safety as he raised it to point at the back of his head. The sound of it makes DEREK pause in his walking. "There won't be another." That's when he pulls the trigger.

Once the "money" was taken, JOE watches his friend take out the gun and witnesses the murder of DEREK. That's when hell breaks loose. A few of the now dead man's cronies pull out their guns and begin shooting the two guys. In an instant, he pulls up his gun from the back of his pants and pulls the trigger, bullets hitting some of the men. He manages to dodge bullets from the latter crew and keeps shooting until everyone else except him and FAITH remain standing.

The bullets going off left his ears ringing, and FAITH backed up a good distance, dodging the bullets that came so close to hitting his skin. He shot back and eventually both of DEREK's goons were down as well. The firing of weapons cease and his heart is still racing within his chest. This really just fucking happened. It's finally over with. He knelt down on the ground, having to have a moment to try and compose himself. To actually breathe when during that whole time he didn't take in a single breath.

After the shooting battle, JOE takes a moment to realize that this just happened. It's like California all over again, except he wasn't alone. He regains his breathing and go back to reality and looks at FAITH who's doing the same. Silence fill the outdoors except with the occasional rustle of the trees. "Are you alright ? " He asked.

FAITH didn't reply for a couple of seconds, focusing on whatever was around him to keep himself from having what could potentially be a panic attack. He didn't need that right now, and that's also when he knows how much DEREK has put an impact on his life. He keeps reminding himself he's gone, that he can't do anything to him or anyone. He takes in a sharp breath. "Yeah.. yeah.." he mumbled, then he glanced up towards JOE. "are you ? "

JOE waits for a response while keeping himself intact from throwing up or breaking down. He took out five people, he has gotten use to not break down. "Yeah..." JOE nodded with a sad face and eyes watering. " We...we should get rid of these guys." He added.

FAITH nodded in agreement and he slowly got up to his feet so he can be at his fullest height. "Burning them might be a quicker way to get rid of them. We could just dump them in one of the fire pits and light them up ? " He suggests, and he knows that must seem very sketchy for him to say. It's not like he cares anymore, they gotta get rid of these bodies. "If you have any gasoline, that is."

"Gasoline, matches, shovels, anything you can think of. I also have gloves so none of our fingerprints are on these guys. C'mon, get up." He holds out his hand for FAITH to get up. JOE pulls him up and lets go before leading him tot he trunk of his car. He pops the trunk open and takes out two pairs of leather gloves. He gives one pair for the other to wear and puts on his own gloves. Those fire pits are too small for five dead guys, so I got this." JOE takes out an axe.

FAITH raised a brow at the axe but he didn't question it as he pulled on the gloves he was given. He helps to drag them all closer so it's an easier work for JOE to chop them up. He got over the back of the trunk again to take out the gasoline that's in the back and anything else they would need before rounding it back towards him.

JOE worked on chopping each of the bodies, dumping each part in the fire pit. Once all guys are in the pit, JOE takes out a cloth to clean up the blade of the axe and puts them back in the trunk and gets the box of matches. "Ready when you are." He tells FAITH who has the gasoline.

FAITH nods and he starts pouring the gasoline all over the chopped body parts inside the pit. He makes sure he doesn't miss anything to completely rid of any trace of evidence. It reminds him of the last time he poured gasoline all over someone.. the first person he technically murdered; how quick his body had taken aflame. He shakes the vivid image out of his mind to step back a little so JOE could light them. "Good to go."

I won’t be able to be around much this week, but I’ll just say that I loved the speed dating scene. Really set up Fink’s personality, skill, and face blindness well.

yeah the speed dating scene was pretty interesting. i really like in general how the face blindness is portrayed with the comical same faces. like something about that makes face blindness both understandable but subtly horrifying

1. We start with a general outline of what we want to see happen 2. eventually that goes down to what is really needed and my husband Sanders writes a 1st draft 3. I then read the draft and make changes-- rewrite scenes, take away, change dialog 4. we argue 5. and repeat till we are happy with it! 6. I start rough layouts/lettering/edit some more 7. (see step 4) 8. eventually everything falls into place and then we have a final edit pass 9. BOOM done.(edited)

We spent a lot of time considering where the location would be in real terms

The inspiration of the town is a mix of our experiences of small towns in Arizona and on the Navajo Rez. But also-- bc we like small towns

I based the town layout off of Holbrook Arizona more or less.

QUESTION 2. Not long after the mysterious body is found in the story, Agent Fink enters the scene and gets involved “off the books.” However, his motivations remain elusive. Why do you think Agent Fink is so intent on everything staying off the record? Is it personal or is this a professional risk? What do you think is the significance of the rock found with the body, and why does Agent Fink seemingly have more rocks? Do you think this mystery has something to do with Isaac? If so, how does Isaac factor in to both the mystery and Fink’s motivations? Lastly, what do you make of the dreams Fink has been having?

Still catching up: One thing I think really works with the comic is the balance between quiet, slow images and faster moving dialogue: I love when the comic slows down to linger on images. One part that I kinda liked for that reason was with Yazzie visiting Nathaniel's house and looking at the rug on the wall, the lingering look at the rug really slowed the scene in the best way. Also when Fink is wandering through empty Rocket Ridge. Such a good way to build tension, improve pacing, and draw attention to the art. So good

and regarding question #2, I always get a feeling from this comic that things aren't quite what they seem in this story, so I'm very hesitant to barf up ideas about Fink's motives. Whatever they are, I think they'll be unexpected. I wonder if he has some inklings of the supernatural (???) elements of the story he's in

I went through several sketches with Fink. I knew he was tall, slender, and had a dog... much like Tin Tin and that's sorta why he looks cartoony in the beginning I think... but as the story evolved, again, I just kept pushing he design to reflect that. He is supposed to resemble a bird with his hair a bit. Sort of like a crest.

QUESTION 3. Despite Rocket Ridge being a small town, the discovery of a body jumpstarts a lot of strange things. Do you think someone in the town had something to do with the body that was found? If so, who do you suspect (or have we not met them yet)? If not, do you think it has to do with the town supposedly having run-ins with the supernatural? In the most recent page we do see the supernatural, so do you think it has something to do with the body? In the background there is also Sheriff Logan, the man who discovered the body. Do you think Sheriff Logan will help or hinder Fink’s investigation into the situation? At the very least, do you think Logan will discover the real reason Fink is there? Of a last note, how do you think the comic’s events will affect Logan in general?

QUESTION 4. Besides the bigger mysteries, there is a lot of small town drama going on. At the game, we meet Emma Bloom who Dawn clearly doesn’t care for. What do you think the history is between them? Does it have something to do with Logan, or is it just between them? What significance might Emma have further along? Another noteworthy character when it comes to drama is Nathaniel. Why is Nathaniel trying to obtain a gun? Is it just for protection, due to his angst, or is something else going on? Do you think this will get him in trouble with Joseph who is keen on watching him? In respects to the larger plot, what does Nathaniel’s end of the story have to do with any of the other events going on? Are there any other dramas or characters you thought were intriguing?
