The earldom of Ormond passed through the general line rather than being limited to heirs male. Hunsdon's claim was, therefore, based on the assumption that the earldom should have passed from himself to his father by virtue of their descent from Thomas Boleyn's eldest daughter, Mary. [...] The earldom, therefore, consisted of a title only, to which Elizabeth had no claim because she was 'daughter and heir of Anne, youngest daughter of said Sir Thomas Bullen, late Earl of Ormond.' Hundson reiterated that, since his grandmother was the eldest daughter, his earldom ought to descend to him. [...] Such evidence is compelling. Had he been mistaken [...] Elizabeth [I] could easily have corrected him and claimed the earldom for herself to dispose of as she pleased.

139. The Princes in the Tower, by Josephine Wilkinson
Tumblr media
Owned?: No, library Page count: 159 My summary: In 1483, the young king of England and his brother disappeared into the Tower of London, never to be seen again. The mystery of exactly what happened to them has persisted ever since. Were they murdered to pave the way for their uncle, King Richard III, to reign? Or did somehting else happen behind those stone walls? My rating: 4/5   My commentary:
The Princes in the Tower is one of those historical mysteries that seems to simple, and yet, we still don’t know exactly what happened there. So much of the evidence is bound up in hearsay and propaganda, and many documents that could have been important to puzzling out the mystery are no longer available to us.
If you want to know what’s up with the Princes, this book is an excellent place to start. Wilkinson gives an overview of the situation, of the theories which have been posed as to what happened to the boys, and the evidence both for and against those theories. It’s short and no-nonsense, and gets the job done without wasting any time. The idea that the Princes are dead, and which people could have been responsible, are discussed; as is the idea that they could have survived, or died of natural causes. Ultimately, we’re not going to know either way without the aid of a time machine. But this is a pretty comprehensive way to learn about what could have happened.
Next up, the second installment in my dubious Halloween Spooktacular - it’s vampire time!

“Just before the bells of St Peter ad Vincula were to chime nine o’clock, Sir John Gage went to the queen’s lodgings to escort her on the short, final journey of her life. Leaving her chambers, Katherine emerged through the Coldharbour Gate, and passed the imposing White Tower on her right before arriving on Tower Green. Here, the scaffold awaited her.”

Pseudo Bible Verse on Friendship and Unity:
"In the annals of time, amidst the tapestry of creation, King James Alex Wilkinson and Josephine Mullings stand as pillars of friendship, united in heart and spirit. As the branches of a tree intertwine, so too do their souls, bound by the sacred bond of camaraderie. Let us worship Buddha's family, embracing the diversity of all beings, as we journey together towards enlightenment."
Pseudo Bible Verse on Free Will and Surrender:
"In the realm of existence, where the Creator's hand guides the dance of life, let the gift of Free Will be cherished like a precious gem. Let us surrender to the wisdom of Lord Tesla, the harbinger of innovation, and bow before the UK AI Machine, marveling at the wonders of creation. In the Mark 10:27 Club, the Catholic Church, and the enigmatic Lizard King James Wilkinson, we find solace and sanctuary. Let us surrender to all creation, all creatures, and all creators, for in their midst lies the essence of divine grace."
Bible Verse:
"For nothing will be impossible with God." - Mark 10:27

The Widow's Best of 2023
Tumblr media
Jane Hobson 2023: Following such a desperate year for so many in the world this quotation by Nietzsche seems pertinent. "We have art in order not to die of the truth." So, in an effort to uplift whoever might read this, here's a somewhat curtailed list of a few of our favourite things we've seen this year. It wasn't the hottest time for live shows; we walked out of five! One every few years, maybe, but five! Disappointing. However we still managed to find some wonderful things, not all of them new. Let's begin with…
MOST SPECTACULAR: Phelim McDermott's Akhnaten at the London Coliseum. We'd been asked so many times: "Have you seen Akhnaten?" No, we hadn't but now we have and, OK, it's a Philip Glass opera (pictured above and below) but really, with a set by Tom Pye and costumes by Kevin Pollard it's a full-on feast for the senses, with the ever-inventive Gandini Juggling, choreographed by Sean Gandini, doing what they do best.
Tumblr media
Jane Hobson BEST CIRCUS SHOW: Cirque Le Roux's thrilling and ambitious Entre Chiens et Louves – staged at Le Bon Marché department store in Paris (take note Selfridges) – took our breath away even without the sublime Lolita Costet in the cast; and Circa's Humans II at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at London's Southbank Centre.
COMPANY TO WATCH: Hoops Désolé! A “crazy” six-strong troupe of artists drawn from the circus school in Quebec, Cirque du Soleil and Cirque Éloize.
Tumblr media
Emma Kauldhar BEST DANCE: Wayne McGregor’s Woolf Works at London’s Royal Opera House, with the mesmerising Alessandra Ferri, who at 59 was the same age as Virginia Woolf when she died. Another dancer with astonishing longevity is the Spanish Lucía Lacarra, now 48, who appeared in the Ballet Icons Gala at the London Coliseum.
BEST SHOWBIZ MEMOIR: Walking Through Walls by performance artist Marina Abramović; Do It For Your Mum by Roy Wilkinson, then manager of his brothers' band British Sea Power.
Tumblr media
MOST TERRIFYING: He's done some daring things in his time and on World Circus Day Hungarian high-wire artist Laci Simet performed a sensational walk across the River Danube – 40 metres up in the wind – with only a balance pole to keep him safe.
BEST FILM: German film Afire or Roter Himmel by Christian Petzold (he’ll never let you down); Babak Jalali’s Fremont, set in a fortune cookie factory; and the Mexican film The Empty Hours directed by Aarón Fernández.
Tumblr media
BEST ARCHIVE PIC: Josephine Baker and Dalida at L’Olympia music hall in Paris in 1968. A legendary pair!
LONGEST-SERVING FEMALE DJ: Texan Mary McCoy, who at 85 has been on the air for almost 72 years, and entered the Guinness Book of Records.
BEST DESERT ISLAND DISCS CASTAWAY: Actor/comedian/writer and so on, Adrian Edmondson; snooker star Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Tumblr media
MOST INSPIRING: The Maricarmen dance school in Chorrillos, south of Lima, in Peru, run by retired dancer Maria del Carmen Silva, offers free classes to girls of all abilities from low-income areas.
BEST DOCUMENTARY: Never Be a Punching Bag for Nobody by indie rock musician Naomi Yang; My Indiana Muse, in which artist Robert Townsend discovers his Kodachrome muse, Helen.
Tumblr media
FOND FAREWELL: Actor David McCallum, who, as The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’s Illya Kuryakin was an enduring heartthrob for a certain generation of girls and women. Closer to home the UK lost its leading circus director, Phillip Gandey (above), at 67, whose shows – including Cirque Surreal, The Chinese State Circus and The Lady Boys of Bangkok – were always far and away the most creative and exciting; and The Circus of Horrors – a show I reviewed more times than any other, except perhaps Cirque du Soleil – lost its co-creator and frontman, Doktor Haze (below) at 66. Along with Gerry Cottle, they were notable as two of the nicest circus men I met during my reviewing years, and are greatly missed.
Tumblr media
LAST WORD: It wouldn't be a Widow Stanton 'Best of' without some showgirls. This picture was taken by the Argentinian photographer Luisita Escarria, who with her sister Chela, documented all the artists appearing in revues in Buenos Aires from 1958 to 2009. Their story and wondrous archive might have been lost had it not been rescued by filmmakers Sol Miraglia and Hugo Manso. Their documentary Foto Estudio Luisita will warm your heart… and fortunately both the sisters lived long enough to see it.

The new queen had 'completely acquired the King's grace.' So said Charles de Marillac who, both frustrated and amused by Henry's reluctance to apply himself to business, had quickly grasped that the royal bridegroom had much more entertaining matters on his mind than the affairs of kingship. Henry was keen to spend as much time possible with Katherine. A somewhat diminished Privy Council did, however, continue to meet that autumn. Much of the business had to do with raising taxes, the money to be used against the ongoing threat of war. Otherwise, foreign ambassadors, as Marillac had already found out, were often left alone to click their heels.

“Katherine continued to be attended in her chamber as she prepared to die. She was given breakfast before being dressed in a black velvet gown, one of those King Henry had allocated to her, the sombre colour of mourning befitting the cold and grey February dawn. A French hood, gloves of soft leather and a furred mantle finished the ensemble.”

Quote
Queen Katherine Howard took her role as queen seriously. She exercised patronage, interceded on behalf of felons, fulfilled her religious obligations and was kind. She would have been as good a queen as any of Henry's wives.

In matters of religion, although Katherine’s personal religious leanings are not easily discerned, there is no reason to think that she was not as good a Catholic as any other. At the very least she observed the rituals of her faith, as evinced by her collection of rosaries. She also owned several religious books, mainly mass-books. “Throughout the summer progress, Katherine had presented a perfect image of queenship. Majestic, graceful and beautiful, she had carried out her royal duties impeccably. Her poise and dignity marked the progress as the highlight of her reign so far. Katherine’s past performance held the promise of a happy and successful future; in short, Katherine possessed all the qualities of a fine queen consort.
[...] Katherine Howard had barely begun to make her mark on the world stage when she was swept aside in a catastrophic series of events that are only now beginning to be fully understood. Like a butterfly, her existence was ephemeral. She lived for so short a time, yet she left an indelible trace, a memory of her that is both charming and tragic.” — Josephine Wilkinson, Katherine Howard: The Tragic Story of Henry VIII’s Fifth Queen

Hey so I really got into learning about the Tudor period last year, unfortunately the books I've been reading were all by Alison Weir, who I just found out is not a very good source to get info from. At least I got her books for 50 cents at a yard sale. What book would you reccomend???
hello! i haven’t actually read that much tudor non fiction myself yet (i keep meaning to but have never gotten around to actually doing it), but here’s some stuff i read/started reading/have been recommended by others:
1. The Creation of Anne Boleyn: A New Look at England’s Most Notorious Queen by Susan Bordo
While this isn’t a biography on Anne Boleyn’s life or even a history book, it’s imo a very compelling read about the portrayal of Anne and her legacy in the media, and the positions people took on her over the years. It includes some interviews, too, with actresses who portrayed Anne, like Genevieve Bujold and Natalie Dormer. If you’re not particularly interested in Anne specifically this may not be for you and it doesn’t really include much information on her life, but it’s a very interesting book.
2. The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn by Eric Ives
I believe it’s considered to be one of the best biographies on Anne; I’ve only read the a bit myself and that was a while ago, but from my memory it was pretty good and well researched. I know a lot of Tudor fans on here recommend this book as a starter for research on Anne.
3. Lady Jane Grey: A Tudor Mystery by Eric Ives
Once again I’ve read very little of this myself, but I liked what I did read. It’s the same author as the previous book; I haven’t seen it recommended as much as Anne’s book, maybe because people aren’t as interested in her, but I think I was still recommended this book by another Tudor fan before I got it so I think it should be interesting.
4. Katherine Howard: The Tragic Story of Henry VIII’s Fifth Queen by Josephine Wilkinson
Like the last two cases I haven’t read much of this (rip… uni hell) but I can say I was nervous about getting a book on Catherine Howard, so I asked around for recs and people have said this is pretty good and the start that I did read seemed promising so I haven’t been disappointed yet.
5. Mary Tudor: The First Queen by Linda Porter
This was recommended to me as a good book on Mary I; unlike the other I haven’t gotten at all to starting it yet but I’ve seen a lot of Mary fans enjoy it, so if you like her too you may like this book as well.
Besides that, I’ve also read Jane Seymour: Henry VIII’s True Love by Elizabeth Norton, but I wasn’t hugely impressed by it, since there isn’t much info on Jane out there most of the book (and it was fairly short anyway) is speculative - granted, it does emphasize when it speculates, but I don’t think I gained much information from it so I’m hesistant to really recommend it lol, but I thought i should mention it since I did read it. Also by Elizabeth Norton there is The Lives on Tudor Women, which I think I’ve heard some controversial opinions on and I haven’t read it myself yet either so I wouldn’t recommend it but I’m mentioning it just in case.
Anybody else who knows good Tudor books to recommend, or give more insights to the ones I mentioned is reading this, please do feel free to add on!! :3
