REVIEW: Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren
2/5 ⭐⭐
DNF at 50%, and I AM SO GLAD I DID after I read some spoilers... my LEAST favorite trope happens.
Christina Lauren's books are always a steady 4 stars for me. They're fun, lighthearted, and usually entertaining.
This book was entertaining at first; the opening chapter was funny. However, it didn't take me long to be annoyed by Hazel. She was an overwhelming character, and I just wanted her to stop. It wasn't funny for me after her 10th mess and disaster that she caused. She was way too intense for me, and Josh was way too mellow. I didn't feel the chemistry at all between these two. I couldn't even picture them correctly in my head. Why is Hazel so obsessed with being this guy's best friend? On top of all that, there was absolutely no angst, and definitely no passion. I knew they would get together, obviously, but I wasn't dying to find out how.
Christina Lauren writes romance on the more 'closed door' side of the spice spectrum, but come on. Their first time together was so lame; it was over in seconds. Talk about lack of chemistry. At least in Honeymooners and in Holidaze, there is tension, there is passion despite not getting the dirty details.
I'm glad it was on KU, and I didn't buy it!

Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating
His hands come to my face and his mouth comes over mine and it’s intense, just the way I always dreamed it might be, to kiss someone I love so deeply already and who’s seen me exactly as I am.
Rating: ★★★★★
Summary:
Free-spirit Hazel Bradford has had a crush on Josh Im since college, he’s the blueprint for perfect, which is how she knows he’d never be interested in her wild-child ways, so maybe it was for the best that they lost touch. But when they run into each other almost a decade later, they kick off the friendship of a lifetime. And because they’re such good friends, they decide to set each other up on a series of double-blind dates so that their platonic soulmate can find their romantic soulmate. What could possibly go wrong?
Review:
I’d read a couple of Christina Lauren’s romances before, one I really enjoyed, the other not so much, so I wasn’t entirely sure how I was going to like Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating, but I absolutely LOVED it! I love how natural and fun their writing style is, it’s so easy to buzz through half a book because it’s so light and fun I never want to put it down. The characters weren’t particularly deep but they still felt fleshed out and complex; I have a personal headcanon that Hazel is autistic so maybe that’s why I find so much meaning in her as a character. And I love love loved that there was no real third act conflict! Because Josh and Hazel were already such good friends and neither of them were particularly used to hiding things from the other, they communicated with each other and shared their fears and were able to talk things through before they became problems. They already had such a solid foundation to their relationship which is why becoming more than that was such an easy switch, all they really added to their relationship was good sex and a new title. Which is maybe why I’ve always favoured friends to lovers as a trope. Friends know how to talk to each other, friends know your weird quirks and shitty opinions and they love you anyway. And for that reason, this might just be the book I turn to whenever I need a bit of comfort. It had good vibes only, and I really fucking loved that.

You had woken with a start, the room a hazy, dusky orange from the setting sun. You fumbled in your bed for your phone, tapping the screen with your thumb to check the time. 7:13pm stared back at you, and you yawned, rubbing the sleep from your eyes. Jameson was perched on the windowsill, slowly blinking at you as he looked away from the birds flittering around outside. Shifting, you slid out of bed for the second time that day, beginning to get ready for your date.
There was a knock on your front door at 7:59, just as you were swiping the wand of your lipgloss across your bottom lip. You capped it, cleaning up the corners of your mouth in the mirror before dropping your phone into your bag, and moving to the door. When you opened it, Danny stood there, arms crossed behind his back. He wore a black suit, with a deep purple shirt beneath the jacket. You noticed it brought out the green flecks in his hazel eyes as he smiled at you in greeting.
“Mr. Kiszka is waiting in the car.” he informed you. “Best to hurry, he doesn’t like to be late.”
“Where is he taking me?” you asked, sitting down on your couch after grabbing your shoes, a pair of strappy heels with a small clasp around the ankles.
“He’ll tell you in the car.” Danny replied, checking his watch before seeing the look on your face. “I’m sorry, I only have the directions. Are you ready?”
“It’s only like, a minute past eight.” you rolled your eyes, finishing with the buckle on your other shoe before standing up.
“Like I said, Mr. Kiszka doesn’t like to be late.” Danny said, a bit more firmly. You nodded and grabbed your keys, moving Danny out of the way as you shut and locked your door behind you in the hallway. He led you to the elevator, and as you waited, you looked him over again. His sharp features were softened by his round eyes that radiated kindness, even through his current stoic face.
“You look nice.” you said quietly as the elevator doors opened, and he ushered you in. “Purple suits you.” The man’s lopsided smile graced his face as he took his place next to you in the lift. He straightened out his arms for a second, rolling back his shoulders and showing off the suit.
“Thanks,” he nodded. “You look great too, by the way. It’s a nice dress.”
“Oh, this old thing?” you gave him a small twirl. “Thank you.” he laughed as you gave a small curtsey. “I didn’t realize how little black I owned until I was requested to wear it.”
“That makes sense. You seem like a bright person. Purple probably suits you, too.” Danny glanced over at you briefly before clearing his throat, the stoicism back on his face as the elevator doors opened to the lobby. Danny stepped out, guiding you as if you’d never walked through your own building before, opening the door for you and rushing ahead to get the door to the back of the Escalade that had brought you home only a few hours earlier. You thanked Danny as he helped you in, giving him a smile as he closed the door.
“Hello, love.” you looked over, seeing Josh sitting in the next seat over. He was completely relaxed into his seat, looking at you with a smirk that almost seemed endearing.
“Hello Josh.” you replied, rolling your shoulders back. “Where are you taking me this evening?” Josh straightened up in his seat as Danny got into the drivers seat, starting the car.
“I’m taking you to dinner.” Josh replied simply. You pursed your lips, irritated by his nonchalant attitude.
“Well it’s the least I’m owed seeing as you drained me of half the blood in my body.” you heard Josh click his tongue as he rolled his eyes.
“You are too dramatic.” he sighed. “It was merely a sip.”
“A sip that made you feel the need to stop at the drug store and stock up on vitamins.” you narrowed your eyes at him.
“I need you strong for next time, love.” Josh slid across the backseat, pressing close to you as his index finger curled under your chin, tilting your head up to look him in the eyes. “There will be a next time, won’t there?” you thought about the first bite, a heat swelling up in your belly and across your cheeks at the memories yet again.
“Where are you taking me to dinner?” you sniffed, turning your head out of his hand, not willing to give him an answer. Josh regarded you with an appreciative and knowing look, settling back from you before answering.
“La Trattoria Luna.” he answered with a smug sniff. Your eyes nearly bulged from your head.
“Josh, that place is like, insanely exclusive, how did you get a table?” you shook your head.
“I know the owners.” he waved away your concerns with a flick of his wrist before letting his hand settle on your dress-clad thigh. “It’s a nice restaurant and we have business to attend to.”
“What business?” you asked, furrowing your eyebrows.
“Business best discussed over a fine wine.” was all he would give you. You pursed your lips, glancing anywhere but him, as he stared ahead through the windshield. Your eyes caught those of Danny, who gave you a sheepish smile in the rearview. You gave him one back, but stopped when you felt Josh’s fingers dig into your thigh, much like they did the first night at the bar when you flirted with the blonde man. You averted your gaze from the driver of the vehicle to the window next to you, quickly regretting it as a few buildings passed quickly by you and made you feel nauseous. You closed your eyes and focused on your breathing, trying to dispel the twist in your stomach.
If Josh noticed your sudden turn, he ignored it, instead loosening his grip on your leg, making a quiet comment about how traffic has become insufferable in the recent century. You wanted to make a quip about him preferring travel by horse and buggy, but feared if you opened your mouth, something else would come out.
“You can open your eyes now, we’re here.” Josh’s bored tone interrupted your anxiety induced daydream of ruining the upholstery of the luxury van, and you opened your eyes, taking in the very stationary buildings now. Reaching for the door, you were stopped by Josh tsk’ing next to you. Giving him a quick glance, he shook his head, and within a few seconds, the door opened, Danny on the other side. He held out his hand to you, and you took it, allowing him to help you from the car, stepping onto the sidewalk. Josh followed you, and as soon as you both were clear of the car door, had a hand on the small of your back, guiding you to the restaurant. You turned quickly, tossing a smile over your shoulder.
“Thank you, Danny.” he gave you another soft, crooked smile and nod before rounding the car, no doubt taking it to park somewhere to await the call to pick you up. Josh pushed you towards the doors of the restaurant a little firmer, causing you to take quicker steps to keep up with his new pace.
Once in the doors, you watched as the hostess glanced up, recognition crossing her face, clearing the bored look and a wide grin being slapped on. She was tall and thin, her dark hair pulled up tightly in a ponytail a the top of her head, letting her dangling, sparkling earrings be the focus.
“Right this way to your table, Mr. Kiszka.” she turned, her high ponytail nearly cracking like a whip from the quick movement, two menus tucked under her arm. Josh kept his hand on your back as you waded through the sea of table, following her to a small, intimate place setting towards a dim corner of the room. Josh pulled out your chair for you, tucking you into the table once sat, and quickly took his own seat. “Would you like to hear the specials tonight?”
“No, thank you. We’ll have a bottle of Domaine Leroy Richebourg, 2000 to start.” you were about to argue, not even knowing what the hell he ordered to drink, let alone what it would pair with, but the hostess turned and with a flick of her hair, dashed off to put in your wine order. Deciding to pick your battle this time, you merely let out a soft huff through your nose, and cracked open your menu. “There’s no need for that, love.” you glanced up at Josh as he gestured to the menu in your hands.
“Well, I’d like to know what there is to eat, so you know,” you shrugged. “It is necessary, actually.” Josh pursed his lips.
“You have quite the attitude for someone who was such a good girl a few hours ago.” Josh tsk’d. “You don’t need the menu, I’ve ordered ahead for us.”
“I’m perfectly capable of ordering my own food.” you replied, still looking over the menu, focusing on the pasta selection.
“And next time we share a meal, I will let you order. But tonight I’d like to treat you, and I know the best dish they make here.” Josh had leaned forward, speaking quietly, the hint of a plead in his eyes, but a waiter came by, brandishing the bottle of wine, causing him to lean back in his chair, allowing the waiter to set two glasses onto the table, pouring the deep red liquid into them. He left the bottle after being thanked by the two of you, and you picked up your glass. Swirling the liquid, watched the legs trickle down the sides before taking a sip, Josh watching you intently. As you set it down, you raised an eyebrow.
“It’s good,” you mused, “but I prefer white.” the corner of Josh’s mouth started to tug into a smirk, yet you could see the restraint in his clenched jaw, not letting it cross his face.
“Your smart mouth is going to get you into trouble one day,” he said, watching you blink innocently.
“I’m having dinner alone with a vampire, I think I’m already in trouble.” you batted your lashes again while taking another sip of the wine. For a red, it wasn’t horrible. “So, what’s on the menu tonight then?”
“Filet mignon with truffled mushroom gnocchi and mixd greens.” Josh rattled off, finally taking a sip of his own wine. “The gnocchi is a personal favorite.”
“You eat?”
“Of course I eat.” Josh said nonchalantly. You stared at him.
“I just figured human food wouldn’t…taste good anymore.” you shrugged, feeling stupid. “It’s how it is in the movies.”
“I will say, after so long, human food doesn’t taste as good as it once did.” Josh sniffed. “We don’t need it to survive, it’s merely an old habit that’s hard to kick. We still have tastebuds. If you only drank water all the time, wouldn’t you crave something different once in a while?”
“I guess…I didn’t think of it that way.” you looked down at the pristine white table cloth in front of you.
“You’re hardly expected to know these things.” Josh waved off your embarrassment, a bored expression on his face. A silent lull floated over the table and you looked around the restaurant, taking in the artwork in the glow of the dim lighting and candlelight. You were taking in a painting of a beautiful young woman, reclined on a chaise lounge when the waiter came back, two plates in hand, carefully setting them down in front of you and Josh. You set your frustration aside, giving him a soft smile across the table.
“It looks delicious.” you commend, glancing from the plate to him. The grill marks on the steak made your mouth water, and you could smell the salty truffle butter in the gnocchi, a hint of thyme wafting up from the creamy sauce.
“Please, before it gets too cool.” Josh was unraveling his silverware and you followed suit, placing the cloth napkin in your lap before picking up your utensils and digging in. You bit back a moan at the first bite of steak, medium rare, closer to the rare side. It was buttery and soft, incredibly tender, the best you’d ever had. “Try a bite with some of the mixed greens. The balsamic vinaigrette on them paired with the steak is heavenly.” you followed his advice, stabbing some of the greens before taking your next bite sized morsel, letting the flavors meld on your tongue.
Another silence fell over the table as you both slowly consumed your meals. Josh seemed intent on you enjoying your food, checking every so often if everything was to your liking, and you confirming so. It was as you reached for your wine glass again, you remembered something from earlier.
“What business did you want to discuss over this fine wine?” you questioned before taking your sip. Josh stopped chewing, setting his fork and knife across the top of his plate delicately. Manners from another lifetime, you were sure.
“It’s a matter of-“
“What a lovely couple, how are you both doing tonight?” you glanced away from Josh, looking up at a near mirror image of him.
Instead of curls, this man had longer, shaggy, slightly wavy hair to just past his shoulders, his mustache more a grown out shadow, a space over his philtrum. His suit was missing it’s jacket, the shirt he wore was wrinkled and unkempt, most of the buttons undone, leaving a view of a long necklace with an old coin as a pendant. His messy appearance stood out among the fine, elegant restaurant.
“We’re fine, Jacob,” Josh shot a glare to the man. “I thought you were out of town this week.” the man named Jacob only offered a smarmy grin.
“Well, Sammy let me know you were bringing a date to the restaurant, I had to come see for myself.” Jacob turned to you, holding out his hand, palm up, fingers curled slightly. “I’m Jake, Josh’s brother.” you reached out, placing your hand in his, and Jake gently grasped your fingers, raising your hand to his lips as he bent down, pressing a kiss to the back of your hand. His brown eyes glanced up at your flushing cheeks as he pulled away, returning your hand to you and smiling.
“It’s nice to meet you,” you give him a small smile in return, though your mind was reeling at the term ‘brother’. How could a vampire centuries old have a brother?
“You as well. How are you enjoying my restaurant? Is everything to your liking?” Jake began to pull out a chair, but Josh grabbed the arm, stopping the movement and cutting off your answer.
“I think you had better visit with the rest of your patrons, before they get jealous of the special attention we’re getting.” his eyes were dark and sharp, yet Jake just chuckled as if he was told an amusing joke.
“You’re right, Josh,” he sniffed, turning you again. “Please excuse my brother, he’s never quite learned to share attention well. It was a pleasure, darling.” Jake gave you a short nod, mischief twinkling in his eye as he tapped his fingers on the back of your chair before moving towards another table.
Turning back to Josh, you watched as he picked up his utensils again, cutting into his steak with a bit more aggression than before, bringing the incredibly rare bit of meat to his lips. You leaned forward, lowering your voice.
“How do you have a brother?” Josh looked up from his plate, raising an eyebrow at you.
“Surely I don’t have to explain the birds and the bees to you.” he sniffed. “Jacob is my twin brother.”
“So he’s a…vampire too?” you looked around, making sure you whispered. Josh leaned forward, a mocking look on his face.
“Yes.” he whispered back with a slight sneer, before settling back in his chair and continuing with his meal. You stared at him, then turned to look at his brother, who was laughing and patting a man on the back at another table. Even with the memory of Josh’s fangs puncturing your skin the night before, it was hard to believe these young men were creatures of the night. Though Josh preferred speaking more formally in your conversations, Jake was more youthful seeming, relatable. “Finish your dinner, love.” you took a few more bites of your steak with the greens, a few nibbles of the savory gnocchi before having your fill.
Josh was sure to avoid Jake as he escorted you from the restaurant, his hand on the small of your back again as Danny opened the rear passenger door for you. The ride back tonight wasn’t as heated as the one before, you staring at your hands in your lap, trying not to get sick, but also thinking about the fact that you had just met a second vampire in the span of 24 hours. It wasn’t until Josh placed a hand on your arm that you looked up, seeing him nod towards the window. The car was parked in front of your apartment building again and you felt a small pang of disappointment in your heart.
“Oh, well,” you began softly. “Thank you for dinner, it was wonderful. Tell Jake I said so, too.” you moved to open the door, when Josh stopped you.
“Aren’t you going to invite me up?” he asked, his hand still on your arm. You looked over to him, studying him.
“Don’t you have some superpower to make me invite you in?” you asked, staring into his eyes. Josh shook his head with a smirk.
“More movie lore, is it?” he hummed rhetorically. “No, I don’t have the power of hypnosis or mind control. I don’t need an invitation either, to enter your home. However, I would like one.” you took him in for another moment, before nodding.
“Josh,” you began, turning in your seat to face him. “Would you like to come up for a nightcap?”
“Nothing would please me more.” he smirked, beginning to move to open the car door. You placed a hand on his thigh, giving it a squeeze.
“Unfortunately, it’s very late, and I have to work tomorrow, so we’ll have to share a drink another time. Goodnight.” you leaned over, pressing a peck to his cheek before quickly exiting the Escalade, walking quickly into your building and letting the secured door latch shut behind you.
It took everything you had to not look out the lobby windows to see if the car was still there with Josh most likely fuming inside. You were lucky the elevator was fast, and quickly stepped on, giggling to yourself as your phone buzzed in your bag. You waited until you got into your apartment and locked the door behind you to check the messages, listening to Jameson meow as he ran to come greet you.
‘Remember what I told you at dinner? About your smart mouth?’
Biting your lower lip, you texted him back.
‘Refresh my memory.’ you sent back. Near immediately, his text bubble popped up, and you pictured him furiously typing in the backseat of the Escalade as Danny drove him back to the estate. When his message appeared, your heart thumped a little harder in your chest.
‘That it would land you in trouble. Be prepared for our next meeting love, you’re in it.’

I’ve actually been meaning to ask you this for a while. Do you have any recs for books that give you that Brettsey feeling? I asked in the general tag pretty much after the season finale aired, because I knew we were in for a long wait, but didn’t get too many responses. The ones I did get, I already read. I’ve been in a major book slump for a while and I need something to keep me interested, lol.
I also want to thank you for all the fics you’ve written! I was able to download the longer ones to my Kindle and I’m slowly working through those now. They’ve been great during this long hiatus.
Oh, do I have a list for you!
But my list might be a little longer than most because while some of these characters may not match 100% they had enough bits or pieces or maybe the right vibes to remind me of Brettsey.
Also, a few of these served as inspiration for various fics I’ve written through the years so they could be on the list for that reason.
Alright, here we go. In no particular order, books I’ve read in the last four years that reminded me of Brettsey:
Happy Place by Emily Henry
When Sparks Fly by Helena Hunting
Book Lovers by Emily Henry
A Kiss for A Kiss by Helena Hunting
A Secret for A Secret by Helena Hunting
Sweet Love by Lauren Accardo
It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey
People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry
Crazy Stupid Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams
Beach Read by Emily Henry
Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn
Roomies by Christina Lauren
Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren
The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory
The Do Over by Lynn Painter (YA Romance)
Let me know if you decide to give any of these a try and what you think of them! I’d love to know!
And omg thank you so much for reading my fics! That means the world to me! I’m very happy to hear they’ve helped you make it through this extra long hiatus. That’s exactly what they’re there for. You’re sweet to drop by the ask and let me know! You’ve made my day today! Thank you!
