He stops. Adam can see the gears turning in his head as he feels how violently his hands are trembling; realizes that there's no dullness or self-loathing or attempted diplomacy in his voice, but fear.

"Oh," he says, finally. "Oh." Adam's heart races so hard it feels like he's going to be sick.

And then Malcolm smiles, eyes bright behind his glasses, and squeezes Adam's hands. "Well," he says. "The sentiment stands."

The nausea pours out of him all at once like an icemelt, like thawing; and then the tears come after.

"Do you know yet what you'd like me to call--oof!" Malcom is interrupted all at once by a hug like a drowning man (ha) finally close to the shore; it takes a second to get his wind back enough to adjust his glasses, which have been almost knocked off his face, and hug him back.

They talk. Adam cries. There's hot tea; they talk more. And his paralyzed lungs finally let out the breath he's been holding all his life; and they draw in another, and another; and it's then he decides that he'll never stop breathing again.

Jing Yuan dreams of dying by your hand.

He wakes with the sensation of your fingerprints ghosting his neck, a sweet, painful grip, air choking out of his lungs. Of the kiss of steel, slotted between his ribs, the perfect angle to touch his heart.

It's a perverse desire, he knows. But every game must end, and no life can be sustained forever. His end nears, with every piece set on the xiangqi board, with the scatter of plum blossoms across the lake.

Will he die bitterly, in a cool autumn with his work left undone, with one more duty he will never fulfill? Or will he die with the knowledge that he has lived his best, protected many, and that he has nothing to regret? Or will he be lost to even himself, mara leaving his mind unwound?

Jing Yuan prepares. He sets up his pieces, lays his plans, creates a foundation of interlaced designs that not even his death will shake. To build a nation that lasts long after he is gone: maybe that is another sort of immortality.

Death will not come easily to him. But when it does, he prays he will die as Jing Yuan, not Xianzhou's general.

Can he ask for that much?

Yanqing is careful never to call you and Jing Yuan anything other than shifu.

Jing Yuan is not his father, and you're only his mentor. He scoffs at anyone who refers to the three of you as a family, as if you three could ever fit into such a traditional role.

It's painfully inadequate to describe what the two of you mean to him; he's not a child. He's your disciple, the one who hones his blade alongside yours, someone who is honored to follow in your footsteps. Trusted. Respected. Talented enough to stand alongside two of Xianzhou's most capable generals.

Besides. Besides, what sort of parents would prepare him for their deaths, ask him to be ready to strike his "father" down in one blow?

Yanqing can do it. He's ready. He has to be. To be an immortal species, to live with the blessing of eternity, is to accept the bitter fruit of death. Of friends, of foes, of all those will pass before him.

His hands do not tremble when he grips his sword. One strike. One swing. One blow, for each of you. To honor what you have taught him, even if he must preserve alone.

Everything has an end.

But you cling to your life. Not yet, not now. Just a few more years to train Yanqing, to watch him grow past his youthful arrogance. Just a few more moments with Jing Yuan, to bicker over treatises and internal policies.

Is it wrong to want more? To hope for a tranquil life, unmarred by the scars of battle, untainted by the sins of the past? To finally breathe, to have a moment as yourself, not Xianzhou's general?

You've had time to prepare. You know it is coming, whether you are ready or not. The funeral preparations are laid out. Still, you wonder.

Who will clean your grave after you're dead? Who will lay out offerings, burn joss paper? Who will carry your hearse to your grave?

Jing Yuan will go out as a hero. Yanqing will be a successor to your legacy. And what will you leave behind? How will the people of Xianzhou remember you?

Immortality has always been a curse, not a blessing. If you had been like your mortal friends, if your life was as fleeting as frost on a spring morning, would you not cling so to your fistful of decades?

You pray. Not for glory, not for heroics, but for one more game of xiangqi under the calm spring sky.

I need to stress something somewhere. And I know you will be able to help or even help be observe but, I have a haunting feeling that in the clips we have of Mork reading to Day, is in the future and….Mork isn’t actually there anymore . … many reasons with the scenes set up but the main things for me is the fish. There is only one in the rank now in that scene. And the book marks in the book. 1 fish bookmark, the other an avocado? And their legs are covered with a blanket. So no 2 slippers of fish is shown……am I creating narrative things that are not there or seeing things wrong? it just feels almost a melancholy scene set up in front of the tank…… and I’m scared!!

On Spanish TikTok, or as I like to call it Tea Talk, someone stated they saw the book's ending, and it ended with Mork dying and donating his eyes to Day.

The people of Tea Talk ripped that video to shreds. The comments section was not pleased with the mentiras (lies), and Indonesian TikTok even showed up in the fray with the actual book to prove the original poster was "Livin' La Vida Loca."

I don't know how this cookie will crumble, but let me remind you of two things:

#1 - This is GMMTV.

It gave us The Shipper in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, and I think it has been correcting that wrong since.

And it gave us Only Friends in 2023.

I wanted murder and mayhem. Instead it gave everyone happy endings except the slut because apparently he had too many "happy endings" and *morality* or some bullshit.

If you are watching Playboyy, it's what Only Friends could have been if Disney BL hadn't produced it.

I might sound salty (because I am), but I'm really just trying to emphasize that GMMTV wouldn't. Period. Full stop. GMMTV wouldn't give us a sad ending to a branded pair. It will kill a mom quick, but sad times for a branded pair? ¡Nunca! For example, how did we all know Palm x Nueng were gonna be safe and sound in Never Let Me Go? Our Skyy 2. Can't have Our Skyy 3 if it kills a ship now can it?

#2 - This is Aof

The director, producer, and screenwriter extraordinaire shot Pat (Ohm) on Christmas Eve.

He killed Papang!

Hell, he killed Singto before the series even started!

Mork (NOT GAWIN, NO!) got beat up and was hospitalized!

And yet, we got a happy ending each time.

The man wants to make use cry, but he has never ended with queer trauma to do so.

Which is why there are still two fish in that tank.

And I think the avocado is a shout out to Jimmy's love of them (because who doesn't love avocados, am I right?).

So as much as I do not think the reading scenes we keep getting are set in the present,

I don't think they are setting us up for a sad future, especially because Korea already did this trick.

If you watched To My Star 2: Our Untold Stories last year, you know that shit hurt, every, single, episode,

and because it hurt, we were too blinded by the pain to notice the happiness sprinkled throughout.

The happiness we were seeing wasn't flashbacks of their past relationship or even snippets of their current one.

THEY WERE GLIMPSES OF THEIR HAPPY FUTURE!

Korea gave us The Eighth Sense and Strongberry's Choco Milk Shake, both which had the perfect premises to fuck us over, and yet my only complaint was NO POLY!

If Korea can delivery happy endings, Disney BL can too (but not the kind it punished Boston for. Never those kind). It isn't Taiwan, and it certainly isn't Japan who is ALWAYS itching to give maximum pain. This is "soft power" Thailand, GMMTV, Aof, and a branded pair. If GMMTV brought out Gawin to get Krist and Joss back to kiss a homie, I greatly doubt it would tank the JimmySea ship for a sad ending (did you get the pun?). If there is one thing I can count on GMMTV for, it's to secure the bag. Sell merch. Sell novels. Sell a special box edition of the series. Sell the ship. That won't happen if this is sad.

I had two scenes in my head which lead to plotting this fic: the first was TK and Carlos in the bunk room, the second is in this part. And initially I’d planned for the reveal to be in this part, to end part 4 with Carlos using “baby” as a code word, but then we got 4x16 and Carlos used that word in the most beautiful of contexts and so while it jossed the notion of him using it for the first time to alert TK? I am not complaining at all.

Anyway, thanks to those who have been along for the ride, for those - like me - who wait until a fic is done before reading? Have at it.

//That leaves just four secrets and four people to assign to them: David, Arturo, Hu and Eden. Our options are that these four are made up of a murderer, a manipulator, a closeted lesbian/bisexual and someone with an eating disorder/degenerative disease

//Let’s get the obvious out of the way first: whoever’s in the closet has to be a girl, given the phrasing. I’m gonna say it’s most likely Hu, given how quick she was to come to Nico’s defense and how she wanted it revealed as late as possible. I was worried she might be the murderer, but her hidden quote makes that unlikely:

//It was specified the murderer has no remorse. This is a clear demonstration of remorse, and likely for something else entirely.

//Maybe Eden is the killer or manipulator? To which I say, that’s ridiculous. Eden’s role in the story has been as the beacon of hope through all this, and was the one to move Teruko’s heart with her speech about optimism. Her being the killer would be surprising, sure, but would it actually be good writing? I don’t think so.

//Yes, it’s possible that she’s the manipulator, but I can’t see that simply because this chapter is very clearly leaning on the fact that Teruko’s inability to trust people is going to be a hindrance more than an advantage. Having the one person who’s always tried to befriend her be a liar and manipulator just feels wrong from a writing perspective.

//Instead, because she once said she spends over half a day working on clocks, I think it’s more likely that she’s the one who has the disorder/disease. Her body is falling apart on some level, and it might explain why she’s so short.

//One of the symptoms of chronic malnutrition is stunted growth. It also wouldn’t fit Hu, given that she’s pretty shapely. True, body mass doesn’t always equate with physical health, but the fact that it specifies “your body is falling apart” suggests that it’s someone smaller and thinner.

//So that leaves our last two: David and Arturo, and odds are that one’s a murder and one’s a manipulator. And at last, I can return to my theory about Arei and J.

//Yeah, no wonder she looks so horrified

//But here’s a the thing: Arturo and David are both good candidates either of these secrets. Their quotes don’t make it exceptionally clear either.

//Both of these are good candidates if you wanna look at them, and if you analyze their talent and behavior throughout these chapters, it could go either way.

 //Arturo could be a murderer who killed ugly people, making him literally Dr. Steinman from Bioshock, or he could be a con artist who scams celebrities, hence why he only operates on them.

//Likewise, David could use his status as an inspirational speaker to either manipulate the hell out of people (which he’s done throughout this chapter) or he’s covering up the fact that he killed someone. Either way, the irony is that Xander’s idol is exactly the kind of person he’d take a stand against.

//But more to the point, no matter who it is, Arei knows who they are, since everyone’s names are on the motive secret letters. Arei went into the playground meeting with David knowing he’s either a liar or a murderer.

//Why is that relevant? Well, now that we can take a closer look at the body, consider this interesting detail that @tophats-tea​ was kind enough to point out in their own theory.

//This is Arei’s hair normally, from the start of the chapter. Notice how it comes to a stop halfway down her neck?

//Take a look at her hair in the victim reveal:

//Her hair hasn’t come undone, you can still see the braid on the other side. Even if it was, the hair on the right side still hands freely, and you can clearly see it comes down much further, even past her shoulders

//There were only four days between the motive reveal and the BDA. Nobody’s hair grows that fast. Not to mention there was no attention brought to this fact, nor to her face. The only details anyone specified were that her neck was broken and that her wrists had irritation marks on them from some kind of binding.

//And who was the only people who really examined the body in detail? Teruko, who we’ve learned may have prosopagnosia, and Arturo, one of our two potential murderers. That’s it. Nobody else looked closely at her face, just that they were looking for specific death details.

//And that brings me to J, who had some prominence in this episode as well. She was selected as one of the guards to make sure nobody tampers with evidence, and then she had these questions for Teruko.

//These are funny and all, but they’re colorful enough that I’d actually expect them from Arei instead of J.

//It’s curious too, because one could say that it was only possible that J could’ve known that Teruko pulled a knife on her, unless she told Arei or she heard that Teruko did the same with Charles. Either way, that news would get around.

//And for the record, take a look at J’s hair

//It’s so short that it seems easy to hide under a wig that long. Arturo and Teruko wouldn’t have thought to check under it, hence why they likely didn’t notice.

//There was also the interesting detail that J was the one who asked when it was the last time everyone saw Arei, and they all say it was at noon yesterday. But at no point does she specify if she saw her anywhere or not. Everyone glossed over that detail.

//And of course, if my theory is correct, that means Arei approached J knowing either the plastic surgeon that’s been hounding J or the person she just traumadumped to is actually a murderer, which suggests two possibilities:

//Either Arei was the one who offered to switch places with J to try and protect her, or J was the one who suggested it to Arei. And I’m starting to suspect it might be the latter.

//Because consider this: if Arturo were the murderer, why would he target Arei? While Arei likes J, I don’t know if I can consider them close enough for him to actually, for example, feel threatened by her presence.

//But David? He’s actually got a damn good reason to try and target Arei, having made up his secret about depression and was the one who encouraged her to be a kinder person. Which, if this is true, suggests that Arei knew he was full of shit and as a murder, or she saw right through him as a manipulator.

//While I still think what she said about her sister and Eden were all genuine, this is also Arei we’re talking about; a girl who’s motive was about lies and manipulation.

//And that suggests David was planning to target her, but instead, he captured and killed someone who was dressed as her.

//The other key player in all this is Eden, the person who apparently made up with Arei off screen, and was happy to elaborate, but Teruko didn’t care. And throughout these last few episodes, it seems like Eden has been trying to work with Teruko, maybe get her alone for just a couple minutes to talk, but Teruko’s blown her off every time

//You know what I think? Arei clued Eden on who the murder is, and she’s trying to let Teruko know. Why do I think that? Because of Arei’s quotes, both public and hidden:

//These two quotes have been at the forefront of all these theories, and with every episode, they feel more and more relevant.

//Not to mention, and this from a Doylist perspective, but the fact that Arei’s only really had two big scenes so far this chapter. She strangled MonoTV with the rope, she had that big emotional episode in the playground...and then she was basically off-screen until she died. That feels like a waste to me; even Hibiki got more development than that, and anyone who’s followed me for a while will know how much I hated how dirty she was done.

//I’m not simply wishing for Arei to be alive because I like her as a character. I’m saying it because she received so much narrative emphasis and there’s so much going on involving her this chapter that it feels like a waste for her just to be dead. Not unless they’re gearing up to a big reveal

//And with how things are seeming to play out, my initial theory that Arei wanted to protect J might actually be that J wanted to protect her instead.

//The final detail I want to discuss for this is the note Rose and Teruko found in the trash.

//The only details I could really get out of this were “friend” “than ever” and “7:30.″ A meeting definitely went on at some point, and odds are it involved Arei and either J or Eden.

//Rather than discrediting my theory, this episode has actually given me more ammo to suggest this is actually the reveal we’re gearing up toward. And I for one am excited.

//So yes, thank you for reading this long-ass rant, stick around for more theories if you wish ^^;

ARC Review: The Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel by KJ Charles

4.25/5. Releases 9/19/2023.

Vibes: boss/employee, an Heir Hunt, a hero whose love language is hypercompetence, soft romanticism with just the right amount of angst.

After inheriting an earldom, Rufus finds himself in a dispute with his uncle--who brings up another snag in Rufus' inheritance, one Luke Doomsday. Rather than fight Luke, Rufus decides to hire him as his secretary and make him his ally. The allyship thing becomes rather complicated, however--not only because Luke is a part of a famous smuggling family, but because Rufus actually super wants to bone him. And Luke might be up to more than Rufus realizes...

KJ Charles is one of those authors with such a strong, distinct voice. That's consistent here, as is the rich setting and sense of subculture inherent in her Doomsday books. I think I might still prefer The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen, but that's pure taste (and me being in love with Joss Doomsday). This was a more than worthy followup, and the boss/employee romance that everyone who's uncertain about boss/employee romances should read.

Quick Takes:

--Yes yes Rufus is Luke's boss, and this is something they actually talk about (and, in a very consensual and flirty and normal way) fetishize together. But rest assured, the power dynamics are fully acknowledged and confronted. Like, Rufus initially does feel a bit bad about lusting after his secretary, and he does make it very clear that Luke does not have to do anything he doesn't want to do. (Luke is... significantly less concerned.) I appreciated that.

I also appreciated that Luke points out that an official legal title does not necessarily... peak power... make? Which is a theme throughout this book. Yes, Rufus is an earl, but so many people look down on him despite his title because he is an ex-soldier and isn't able to read very easily, among other things. Yes, Luke is this lower-class guy who's risen up to become a secretary (in part because his cousin Joss Doomsday is absolutely railing a local baronet, bless) but the Doomsdays are also quite powerful in the era. Their power may not be "official", but it has a lot of reach that Rufus and his family can't quite grasp. So that does give Luke a bit more leverage in the relationship, and I found that so different from a lot of historicals that worship the title.

--Going back to reading being a struggle for Rufus... I loved how this was approached by the book. I never got the sense that Rufus needed to learn how to read more easily in order to be seen as a valuable person by anyone who mattered. Anyone who got on Rufus about this issue was an asshole. The main reason why he really "needed" to do anything was because he needed to know what he was looking at re: certain documents related to his responsibilities as earl. The problem was practical, versus being connected to Rufus's intellect in any sense; and it wasn't presented as him being this poor little lost boy, either. It wasn't condescending.

It did give Charles a great opportunity to weave in one of the most touching parts of the novel, however. So much of Rufus and Luke's romance is about the little things that they say and do for each other.

--There's a lot of cozy domesticity in this book? Much of it takes place on this estate that Luke and Rufus are trying to whip back into shape, and they spend so much time working together. You really get this lived in sense of their relationship, despite the fact that they haven't been together all that long.

--In a similar sense, this is one of those books where you just kind of feel like love creeps up on the leads in this very normal way. Like, there aren't a lot of BIG ROMANTICALLY CODED EVENTS (though there are a couple). Luke and Rufus falling in love is woven in throughout the story and in their everyday lives. Like, there isn't some big "omg I love him" moment; you just know that they have truly slipped into love together. It's really lovely and really quietly romantic, and I loved that.

The Sex Stuff:

KJ Charles writes sex in a way that is explicit, sexy, and like... often kind of funny? The sex in this one starts fairly early, which is something I appreciated about Country Gentleman and something I appreciated here. Like, they're definitely into each other by the time they start hooking up, but... they also just really want to throw down, you know? I loved that Rufus and Luke falling in love was aided by this sexual relationship between adults. This is very much one of those books where they're like "OH DON'T WORRY, IT'S JUST SEX, WE WON'T FALL IN LOVE!!!" Which I am trash for.

I really had a good time with this one. KJ Charles is just one of those undeniably strong writers, and I have to just give a blanket recommendation for her books.

Went to temple the day before CNY Eve because oh boy do we not want to ford the press of a sea of humans while fighting a granny for a folding table to lay out the food offerings while slow choking to death in the thick haze of incense. (there's still more cleaning to do at home help)

Things of note this year:

*The confusion over the pre-ordered paper offerings because only two out of the 6 attendees can actually read fucking Chinese characters and the one who did the pre-ordering did not communicate to us directly about the new conditions, and only sent her brother who speaks in the briefest ways possible so he pointed at the items in question and said "Man, woman" and we're like ???? Yeah? we get 3 sets men and 3 sets women every year? (it comes with gender coded paper clothes) and then dad saw that we were short so he bought two more. Turns out, they were selling selling couple sets now and that's what my cousin pre-ordered, AND NOT TELL THE ONES WHO ASSEMBLES THEM EVERY YEAR.

Me: Eh, the ladies get spare clothes then! Besides the extra hell money.

*As I was washing up the temple provided dishes and teacups at the sinks just next to the doors that are between the memorial tablet hall and the fireplaces? where we burn the paper offerings, chaos briefly broke out behind me and I turn to see a small pile of flaming paper offerings in the middle of the open air covered tiled floor area that leads to said fireplace? and I'm like, wtf, you are about 15 feet short of where you should be; then I realised a temple staff was loudly chiding a temple patron for moronically lighting his paper offerings on fire on the many candles inside before walking through the increasing crowd to go outside and promptly dropped the whole fucking flaming mess onto the floor short of the fireplace? oven? kiln? that is already merrily blazing and people have been peacefully queuing up with armfuls of offerings to toss in. And he dropped it because it was already on merry fucking fire? It's all paper and cardboard? There's a breeze outside that fanned he flames? Like outside has wind and airflow? And he was a good distance away from where it's supposed to be burnt proper to float off to where ever the ancestors are??

*So here's the thing about asking spiritual beings questions: kinda hard to do. So the Chinese developed simple "fortune telling" tools to glean any indication of an answer or a general direction. In this case, after laying out the food offerings, and offering up the joss sticks, and the paper offerings are assembled beautifully in a vaguely lotus shape, we have to wait while the ancestors "eat" and "drink" the food offerings (a can of Carlsberg for my Second Uncle in this case as well) and this can take a while; meanwhile we're slowly getting smoked by fragrant incense by all the joss sticks being lit. And it's not even the insane crowd on CNY Eve!

Anyways, my Second Uncle's wife is the most senior in the temple group so she's usually the one asking if the ancestors (and her late husband) are done eating yet. We use something called a jiaobei or poe (with the accent) or loosely translated as moon blocks. These are a pair of crescent shaped pieces of wood carved with matching flat and curved sides. You toss them onto the floor after silently asking a question directed to the gods or the ancestors or whatever spiritual being, and then depending on how they land you get a yes, no, or the rarest, a confused answer where the blocks stand on their edges???? (wtf seriously never seen).

So I keep hearing the wooden clacks of the blocks getting tossed after a minute or so pause in between, with each pause getting shorter. I was guarding the paper offerings but I got curious and went over to have a look after hearing 5 clacks in a row; it was my aunt. And she really wants to go home now because it's been 2 hours of slowly becoming smoked jerky, but she keeps getting two same sides up (no) again and again. She hands it over to her daughter (said cousin who caused the pre-ordering confusion earlier) and she gives it a go; it's a NO. I was like, uh maybe I can give it a go? Aunt tries one more time, gets another NO from the ancestors. Tries in front of her husband's memorial tablet; gets a YES. Fed up, she hands me the blocks because what else has she got to lose.

Me, shuffling over to in front of the ancestors' tablets: *silent asking* Cousin who has known me since I was a baby: WAIT WAIT WAIT.....don't throw so hard. Me, about to fling the blocks down onto the tiled floor where they are sure to bounce off into the underside of the insanely heavy ornamental tables and more folding tables holding food offerings and the many feet of other devotees: .......OK.....*flings down gently* Me, staring: IT'S A YES, LET'S GOOOOOO

You have never seen an octogenarian pack up a whole ass boiled chicken, steamed cupcakes, fruits, etc etc so fast. Meanwhile I've booked it to go get the paper offerings to burn to reach the spiritual realm of whatever; I dunno, I'm not well schooled in Buddhism.

Later on during lunch at home, I told dad what had happened and he wondered if the ancestors were annoyed at Second Sister-in-law for the paper offering screw up because it's the first time we've deviated like that, and that was why they kept telling her NO but she essentially kept going (and I'm paraphrasing a friend here) 'Are we done eating yet? Are you full? Are we done yet? How about now? How about now? How about now?'

Edit: Well that didn't save properly but anyways this thing has been sitting in my drafts for almost 2 weeks. Fortunately CNY has been pretty quiet despite how busy and exhausted I was (caught hives for some damn reason on the third day). And now I can finally post this up on the final day of celebrations lol.

As promised, we got here exactly what daemons the characters from POI would have

First: John Reese is a wolfhound. This man is the most dog-coded character I've ever seen in my life. I'm of the opinion that people default into assigning dog daemons too easily, and partly that's because none of the characters I've seen given them have been anywhere near as dog as Reese is. My sister and I first started coming up with these almost five years ago, and this was the very first we landed on.

The next one we landed on was Shaw. We waffled between panther and cougar for a bit, but panther is a little... fancy for her. Dressing up isn't exactly one of her highest priorities; she'd prefer to be on the roof with a gun. Or in a tree with a mouthful of teeth, so to speak.

Our next stop was Joss Carter and damn, but the second we came up with it, we were sold. She has a peregrine falcon. Bird of prey endemic to NYC, something beautiful and fierce.

After that, we tossed around a few ideas but didn't settle on anything until now, years later. One walk through the rain and suddenly we put all the pieces together

First, we had ideas about a serval for Root, but it didn't quite fit. We were trying to parallel Shaw with a cat, but in the end, it makes more sense to parallel Finch. So of course she has a bird! An African grey parrot, something brutally intelligent and honestly, often mistreated. And since she's paralleling him by having a bird like his names, that leaves us free to pick what the hell ever for his daemon

I had insect vibes for him, but I couldn't think of anything known for intelligence. We floated a bee or an ant, but. He's not exact social. Then my sister suggested. Well. Why not an entire colony of ants. And you know what, yeah. Hell yeah. Finch's daemon is an entire colony of ants. Pullman isn't exactly gonna show up to tell us no.

Elias is next, and he gets to parallel both Finch and Carter! Like Finch's names, he has a bird, and like Carter he has a bird endemic to NYC. He has a rock dove, otherwise known as a common pigeon. He needs something innocuous that can fly (ha) under the radar

His right-hand man, Antony aka Scarface, gets a fisher. It was my sister's first thought for Elias, but it fits better for him. Something small and extremely vicious.

Lastly, we debated over Fusco for a long while. He kinda has dog energy, but. Well. No one can match Reese on that front. Eventually, we settle on a very large, kinda scraggly grey tabby cat. Sorta like a Maine coon, but without the pedigree.

It Loves Within (a review of goodbyes, gratitude, and gay screaming)

i read somewhere that an aspect of the horror genre is pain. and if you're a fan of the it lives anthology, pain is inevitable.

the pain of choosing who has to take jane's place, a game that (doesn't) end(s) in sacrifice, betrayal, and anguish. the pain of losing one's parents, finding family anew (in both blood and found) - only to potentially lose it all.

the pain of an impossible choice: do you end this, once and for all, to save everyone - only to never see them again when you finally return home? do you remain in this world, with gaping wounds patched by temporary bandages, for the life you've never thought you had the chance to live? or do you try try try to bridge it all together, pushing for a world full of potential, a reality still out of reach, but still worth fighting for all the same?

every ending of It Lives Within is tragic in its own way, a bittersweet balm to the trauma-filled fuckaganza of a journey of these characters we know and love.

i'm never going to stop saying thank you to everyone at the @itlivesproject team for making the choice to create and collaborate on this masterpiece. the pain of pixelberry cancelling sequels (er, trilogies) broke my heart, but this fan game is more than a dream come true.

looking back, i'm actually glad that they cancelled it - because i wouldn't trade every second i played ILW for anything. (and my girlfriend knows i've spent numerous all-nighters just playing and/or talking about ILW <3. i tell my therapist it started with abel's first diamond scene--and okay getting side-tracked).

first off, i want to mention all the variants. the It Lives series were unique and notorious for having different branches and endings that carried through to the next book, something which isn't very common in mobile visual novels. since ILW had not one, but two books to reference... hoo boy. coding, writing, making art + sprites for, testing, editing, and hell even just thinking of the different variables and how they impact a third book is such a herculean feat and i applaud everyone on the team for all the blood, sweat, and tears poured into this endeavor.

the gameplay itself was super fun!! i think it hit the right balance of action with timed choices and puzzles (i now want my own crown paperweight), implementing that Nerve Score system that the It Lives series is known for. not only did one have to keep in mind their Nerve, but also their choices between Blood and Shadow that would seal the fate of everyone in this Pixelberry Cinematic Universe (hello, horror Julian HSSgame). it was fun as fuck, i really liked and appreciate the decision of 3 different main endings <3

because the plot was a downright banger. every twist and turn had me on the edge of my seat and frantically screenshotting everything (somehow i've gotten to 20k screenshots, but at least 98% is ILW. the other 2% are random crap and also Choices, lol). it was cool to theorize and guess correctly on some things and still be utterly shocked at the brilliant execution. i can't list every single thing that made me gasp, but the crumbs of foreshadowing are incredible. not just saying this as a tester, but the replay value is nuts. (also the different personalites of sarcastic, genuine, and aggressive are so good).

having character relationships as a core stat was also an organic, lovely choice. i adore how everyone started off at various points (joss at 0 and amalia at 75 iirc?) and could develop differently and sometimes independently of nerve (abel being easy to befriend but having tough nerve to raise because he's going through Some Shit, while jocelyn was more closed off yet had easier nerve to raise). it really colors the ways the main 4 interact with rowan, and i love how even the romance variants played a part in it. from jealousy-laden glances to the famed Union Walk Out, this game was a breath of fresh air to the usual 'i accidentally have 1 flirt point with this LI and somehow they're in love with me' vibe of current mobile VNs. (mattyass is an outlier and doesn't count <3)

speaking of characters!! holy shit they slayed and served, giving closure to our favs from the first book and then some (being pro connor green wasn't in my 2023 bingo card, but it happened! i like that funky lil dude), giving the cast of the second book vital yet natural roles, while letting the new cast shine in their own right.

the It Lives cast is vastly beloved for a reason, and the ILP Team not only nailed every single one of the canon characters, but they breathed new life into them (literally in the case of RF!noah/devon). i'm beyond words to express how amazing it was to not only have my blorbos back, but to be able to see a beautiful devonoah romance and flirt with dan pierce after years of pining and get married to andy kang?!?! the gift just keeps on giving. (i'm just biased in mentioning them because devon, noah, andy, and dan are my ILITW biasline but i'm so happy to have seen stacy, lucas, ava, lily again <3333)

i also adore the ILB crew to bits!! i had the impression they were barely gonna be featured (and valid), but the way the showed up!! the way harper was important and could kick ass while injured??? slay.

and the way everyone interacted in ch19 was some avengers assemble beautiful dream. i don't think i'll ever be that happy again in my life, fr <33

and onto the stars of the show...

it's been an honor to spend time with each and every one of the main crew. jocelyn was someone i was hyped to see, ever since her cameo in the ILB end credits scene. redemption arcs are tricky and while i admittedly felt the initial trepidation... the execution of her development blew me away. it is fantastic and realistic (getting to encourage her to be better or to leave her alone was also a cool mechanic. i love how it's in firm yet empathic encouragement that she works to better herself.). she grew into such a fierce, gruff protector with a heart of gold and fists of fury. i love her so much. her nightmare sequence facing her shadow past self is one of my favorite's. arcs of self-forgiveness vs self-flagellation hit hard, and it moves me to tears to see how far joss has come <33 her route having either a slow burn vibe or a fwb tinge was also an excellent choice !! i enjoyed fwb route (she's so sweet and considerate, putting a blanket over us with a frown lmao) and i can't want to replay for sb + to write fics with her <3

now onto lincoln, my fav mlm cowboy son. i was initially jealous because i thought my girlfriend would be into him + i thought abel and he were exes, but i came around in ch13, iirc. i connect with his arc of wanting to prove your worth to your parents very painfully, and it means a lot to see him know that others' approval will never define him. i'm also happy to see him process his pain and give others a chance - give himself a chance to apologize and let abel in again. he's also fun to torture write for in fics, and somehow he's soulmates with my most complex ILW MC, wan, despite me son-zoning him real bad, so that's just amazing characterization. excited to write more <3

amalia my beloved <33 the brains, brawn, beauty of rowan's rogue monster hunting operations. i love her and her route so much. childhood best friends to lovers always slaps (i mean, cmon thats most of the ILITW ships), and the way it was executed for amalia is chef's kiss. the angst of your best friend not being the person you thought they were was an excellent spin on the trope. but the love she has for you and the love you have for her is something all on your own?? perfection <33 also her dreams of wanting to make a difference, especially what happened with her family is a very relevant experience today, are so inspiring <3 i'm so excited to replay her route with a different mc and also to write her as well <3

I love Loki so much but his stans are exhausting. They convinced themselves that Marvel hates Loki personally for being popular and taking the spotlight from the heroes (as if they care about what about the franchise gets popular as long as it keeps viewers) and are giving him bad storylines on purpose to punish his fans. I've seen them unironically use the word misandry twice when talking about Marvel's treatment of him, one of which even said that the MCU has a "bias against white males". You can't make that shit up.

They make it so embarrasing to be a Loki stan, which I am. I know exactly which Tumblr user you're referring to. I refer to them as salty, and you can tell from their speech patterns they're the ones always sending anons complaining about the Loki series in anti Sylki blogs.I want to yell at them that misandry isn't real and that white men are not oppressed.

And I say this as someone that holds a grudge towards most or maybe all of the directors in anything MCU!Loki related. As I've said before, I only watch MCU stuff for Loki. I especially loathe Joss Whedon for the Germany scene in A1 cus yea, let's compare the formerly queer-coded and now canonically queer character to N*zis, and second are the Russos for killing Loki off like that and being annoying about it in interviews, and their cringey gay Russo bs. I don't like other directors either, but my dislike is not as bad as those I've mentioned.
