THE EMBRACE OF CONTROL ALLOWS FREEDOM

For my Signiture project I will be exploring the concept of bondage and fetish. My main intention is to demonstrate how embracing controlling and restrictive factors can allow freedom, this will show through my design journey. My main design aims for this project is to produce a sketchbook, reflective blog and a final garment which really shows how embracing control allows freedom. My design journey to be attention grabbing, in order for the message to be seen. I aim in this project to highlight the positivity of bondage and fetish. My design journey will reflect control and freedom. This will be presented through a controlled aesthetic and colour pallete.

BRIEF STATEMENT

I chose to do this concept, because after reading the bestselling novel of the 21stcentry I wanted to know why such an obvious popular and culturally significant concept was so hidden within fashion and society. I also wanted to highlight the postives of a taboo subject, and encourage change, in society. I knew for this project I wanted to make a garment and showcase a design journey that, was functial, and suitable for everyday wear. My aesthetic for this project is controlled with a reasonable balance of freedom. My vision for this project is to produce an impactful showcase witch highlights the postivity of the concept, and phrehaps changes people’s minds or at least start a conversion about the concept and

•I also chose this because it’s part of the sexual liberation movement, which I think in a time of social and political unrest very impactful, for hapniesss, inclusivity and equality. The wider aim is to empower others to express themselves, and to embrace negativity to enhance positivity.

AIMS

I will aim to design a garment suitable for the office environment creating a piece of clothing that is suitable for this world whilst celebrating bondage and fetish . My design journey will be functional and practical, office, and everyday work ready but also unique and intriguing. It will also be able to be worn all day, and for evening wear, allowing the message to Embrace and love one’s self and escapism in a modern working world.

By using Structural silhouttes you get the perfect contradiction of restraint and freedom.

Empower express positivity of bondage and fetish .

OBJECTIVES

I will research key designer that have explored this, and apply them to how I can futhur them to really establish this concept and encourage change as a designer, through my work. I would use designer Christpher Kane as a starting point, and look into his ‘More Joy’ collection(s). I will then look at other designers, writers, and artists that have or are currently doing this. I will then widen my research to the origins of the concept, gather more knowledge to deeper my understanding and research psychology behind this, and reflects this in my design journey. I will also Research current office wear – and how I can devolp snd translate my concept into wearable designs.

Samples – I will try many different structural silhottes, as well as material exploration, styling, patterns and draping.

Illustrations - I shall do some illistartions of key garment types, especially suits and dresses, and garments that would genrally be in an office or work catergory.

I will Produce my final outcome and a small collection of designs in my sketchbook as well as samples and imagery and concept mooodboards.

I aim to produce A Sketchbook/technical drawings, a reflective blog, and a garment.
