If I’d been the one to adapt Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell into a tv format, I definitely would have made it a fake documentary. Like the current show is good, but it misses the fact that the original book, in-universe, is supposed to be written by a scholar of English magic, complete with footnotes and historical inaccuracies and sources cited. That’s like 50% of its charm! A show in that vein would be so funny and clever. Right now, my vision consists of: Lots of shots of an academic woman in tweed or something walking through fields, museums, and old manors as she talks about the history of English magic. (this is the host. she looks like susanna clarke because that’s how I picture the narrator. non negotiable.) She would also do voiceovers describing the various plot-related hijinks Jonathan and Norrell got up to as the camera pans over, idk, their oil portraits, or artistic depictions of the scene she’s talking about. Mostly the show would feature actors recreating the Important Historical Events (i.e. scenes from the book) in costumes that look a little cheap but are clearly all they had the budget for, like those documentaries you used to watch in school when the teacher didn’t feel like teaching. They could even interview “experts” on various historical fields, like Strange’s involvement in the Napoleonic Wars, the Raven King, Faery and its inhabitants, The Learned Society of York Magicians, and so on. IDK exactly what I'm talking about, but if you have any genius ideas, slide into my messages/asks. I want something nerdy and specific. THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN

Following days of heated John-on-John competition, with 38 Johns battling it out for the top spot.

In a nail-biting finale, which saw the greatest number of votes of the entire competition, John Segundus and John Childermass were neck-and-neck (and, for a good proportion of the fandom, necking) for the first half, but as the final poll went on, one competitor pulled doggedly ahead...

I am honoured to announce that the winner of the official Great John-Off of English Magic, and indisputable Top John, is...........

JOHN CHILDERMASS!

It was a close-fought thing, but with 58% of the vote, Childermass has solidifed his position of Best John in the Clarkeverse, and undoubtedly up there among the Best Johns Of All Time.

THANK YOU ALL for taking part in this rather involved and drawn-out bit of silliness, i was delighted to see so many John Fans emerge from the sidelines to fight with passion for their faves.
