Jubilee finds this booty cove underneath the X-Men’s Australian base, and I suppose this is supposed to be all the booty the Reavers had accumulated from years of performing crime all over the world. And the X-Men don’t know it’s there? Didn’t they go exploring at all? Jubilee finds all this shit in about 5 minutes. And we get a little tidbit about her being a gymnast, possibly with a little bit of acrobatic physical inclination thrown in there thanks to her mutant abilities. Ok, but why were the Reavers stealing ball gowns?

The X-Men celebrate thanksgiving with Professor Xavier’s heartwarming speech as well as Scott and Jean’s proposal to marriage.

I miss those days where the X-Men were like a family with pro-mutant human allies. Nowadays, the X-Men (or rather X-People) are a bunch of paramilitary separatist mutants.

In the back of X-Men annual #13, there’s a B-story that shows what happens after Jubilee follows the X-Ladies into that portal from the mall to the X-Men base, and it’s all about her acclimating to life in the Australian outback while secretly residing there. A couple things of note here. First, wtf is with Storm and Rogue inconsiderately flying down to the base without offering their friends a lift? It’s not like Rogue couldn’t carry them. It’s going to take them all of thirty seconds to zip down there while Dazzler and Psylocke have to spend forty-five minutes trudging through uneven terrain and monster desert mosquitoes after a night of hard drinking at the male strip club. Look at poor Betsy taking her heels off to do the walk of shame. She didn’t even want to be wearing those heels! Dazzler made her. She was wearing something much more functional before that. Second, this little bit of subtle narrative here shows that Gateway very much let his portal linger to purposefully bring Jubilee to the X-Men’s base, as if he had some clairvoyance toward how she was going to be needed there.

Is this the only time Gateway ever talks??? And he’s just like, “hey what’s up.” What’s his god damned problem the rest of the time! I guess if I was him, having to constantly use my powers to teleport the X-Men around the world and having to be responsible for getting everyone’s drunk asses home, I wouldn’t talk to them very much either. 23. Shell ~ Jubilee

Jubilee loved fashion. Her closet was full to the brim with a multitude of bright colours and she made good use of every item in there. Paired with her trademark yellow jacket and fluorescent jewellery, she always seemed to hit the mark.

So when you met her in the hall outside her room, you were nervous what her reaction would be to your new outfit. You were no stranger to her innocent but funny comments about other people’s fashion choices around the mansion, and she had pulled you quickly into her room to restyle your hair in the morning a few times by now. Any changes to your wardrobe happened after her approval was given - granted she liked everything you had bought so far - but the nerves of surprising her by wearing something new didn’t go unsettled.

Leaning against the wall with your hands behind your back, her door clicked open to the left of you. As soon as she saw you, she stopped moving, eyes a little wide and her mouth open in shock. You pushed off the wall and held your arms out to the side to show off your new outfit: a dark green and hot pink shell suit.

You span around slowly to show her the full look, and when you faced her again, a large smile filled her face. She jumped up excitedly with a squeal and darted to hold your shoulders out at arms length, getting a proper look and feel of the jacket you wore.

After scanning your body, she met your eyes again, hers glistening with glee. “I love it!” She exclaimed, her smile reaching all the way to her ears as she shook your shoulders a little. Your grin matched hers, beyond relieved that she enjoyed your new venture into clothes without her help.

“Even your hair matches! You look so great! I can’t believe someone around here looks so stylish without my advice.” You furrowed your brows in mock offense but giggled at her amazement, knowing she was so blown away by your surprise that the words just tumbled out of her mouth.

“Although,” she linked her arm around yours and started traipsing down the hall with you, on the way to your first class of the day, “those new earrings I got last week would go perfect with this. Would really take it from great to amazing.” She wiggled her eyebrows at you and nudged the arm she had her hands wrapped around.

“For the last time, Jube, I am not getting my ears pierced so my outfit looks better!” You raised your voice in humour. The whole time you waited for her to get ready that morning, you wondered how long it would take for her to add an improvement to your shell suit, and to be far to your friend, it had taken longer than you thought.

And this is how Jubilee comes to be a secret resident of the X-Men’s Australian base for many months. Did Gateway let that portal linger on purpose to fulfill Jubilee’s fate? I’m going to say probably. Especially since he probably sees her come through on the other side. This story of Jubilee hiding out at the base after all the other X-Men evacuate, and then how she’s there to help Wolverine escape from the Reavers after they imprison and torture him, is just really good stuff. This is such an engaging way to introduce a new junior member of the team to the danger and hardships of being an X-Man. I really wish subsequent writers of the series continued to develop her character in the same way. (Uncanny X-Men #244 – May 1989)

Yesterday was Chris Claremont’s birthday, and, as arguably the most important Marvel writer of the Bronze Age, we want to celebrate him! Here are some of his best known creations by some of the comics’ greats! (also some Wolverine, arguably the character he’s most associated with!)

Of course the M Squad’s Inferno possessed mutant hunting equipment gets out of control. How it already wasn’t trying to eat them when they were taking a bath or eating a frozen dinner while watching episodes of Cheers is beyond me. The X-Ladies make quick work of the situation though. And then these X-Ladies go to just about the classiest male strip club in the existence of the multiverse. In the mall!! I don’t remember there being a strip club in the mall. Doesn’t seem very realistic, just like it’s not realistic that Storm doesn’t absolutely MURDER Dazzler here for cajoling her to get on stage and dance with Thunder from Down Under.

Aww ya know what? This makes me somewhat sentimental for the adult X-Woman version of Jubilee we never got. Kitty Pryde went through these same character beats and self-doubts when she was younger, but now she’s a fully fleshed out adult with many years of character development behind her; another version of what young Jubilee is so fascinated with in these panels. But Jubilee’s character never got that vote of respect. Did she? Didn’t she get turned into a vampire or something? Just the fact that I have no idea what happened to Jubilee in the modern comics is a pretty good sign that the adult version of her that I’m talking about never materialized. I guess I could be wrong, and I’ll find out in about 25 years when I catch up to the modern comics. (Uncanny X-Men #244 – May 1989)
