jude duarte sad quotes
“She wasn’t even scared. She wasn’t sure she felt anything at all.”
“She couldn’t imagine how it had felt, and as the years went by, she couldn’t make herself feel it again. The horror of the murders dulled with time. Her memories of the day blurred.”
“I know it’s an honor to be raised alongside the Gentry’s own children. A terrifying honor, of which I will never be worthy.
It would be hard to forget it, with all the reminders I am given.”
“We are getting older and things are changing. We are changing. And as eager as I am for it, I am also afraid.”
“You may think salt is sufficient protection, but you children are forgetful. Better to go without. As for dancing, once begun, you mortals will dance yourselves to death if we don’t prevent it.”
I look at my feet and say nothing.
We children are not forgetful.”
“To go inside, we must ride between two trees, an oak and a thorn, and then straight into what appears to be the stone wall of an abandoned folly. I’ve done it hundreds of times, but I flinch anyway. My whole body braces, I grip the reins hard, and my eyes mash shut.”
“Oriana steps forward, probably to remind Taryn and me of all the things she doesn’t want us to do. I don’t give her the chance.”
“I turn my gaze to the floor. Though I hate it, I sink to the ground on one knee, bend my head, and grit my teeth”
“Valerian gives my braid a hard tug. I wince, useless fury coiling in my belly. He laughs and moves on.
My fury curdles into shame. I wish I had smacked his hand away, even though it would have made everything worse.”
“I want to feel something, something besides a vague queasiness. I want to feel more, but every time I look at it, I feel less.”
“I’m so tired,” I say out loud. “So tired.”
I sit there for a long time, watching the rising sun gild the sky, listening to the waves crash as the tide goes out, when a creature flies up to alight on the edge of my window. At first it seems like an owl, but it’s got hob eyes. “Tired of what, sweetmeat?” it asks me.
I sigh and answer honestly for once. “Of being powerless.”
“He doesn’t understand how much that makes them loathe us.
Not that I am not grateful. I like the lessons. Answering the lecturers cleverly is something no one can take from me, even if the lecturers themselves occasionally pretend otherwise. I will take a frustrated nod in place of effusive praise. I will take it and be glad because it means I can belong whether they like it or not.”
“There is nothing I can say to make them stop, and I know it. I have no power here. But today I can’t seem to choke down my anger at my own impotence.”
“What they don’t realize is this: Yes, they frighten me, but I have always been scared, since the day I got here. I was raised by the man who murdered my parents, reared in a land of monsters. I live with that fear, let it settle into my bones, and ignore it. If I didn’t pretend not to be scared, I would hide under my owl-down coverlets in Madoc’s estate forever. I would lie there and scream until there was nothing left of me. I refuse to do that. I will not do that.”
“When I was little, I used to sit at the bank all day, staring at faerie countenances instead of my own, hoping that I might someday catch a glimpse of my mother looking back at me.
Eventually, it hurt too much to try.”
“I want to scream at him: Do you know how hard it is to always keep your head down? To swallow insults and endure outright threats? And yet I have done so. I thought it proved my toughness. I thought if you saw I could take whatever came at me and still smile, you would see that I was worthy.
You’re no killer.
He has no idea what I am.
Maybe I don’t know, either. Maybe I never let myself find out.”
“I pinch my leg until pain washes everything away.”
“Do you know why Madoc won’t let me try for knighthood? Because he thinks I’m weak.”
“Jude,” she cautions.
“I thought I was supposed to be good and follow the rules,” I say. “But I am done with being weak. I am done with being good. I think I am going to be something else.”
“when the fun wore off and I still couldn’t stop, it was just terrifying. It turned out that my fear was equally amusing to him, though. Princess Elowyn found me at the end of the revel, puking and crying.”
“Here’s why I don’t like these stories: They highlight that I am vulnerable. No matter how careful I am, eventually I’ll make another misstep. I am weak. I am fragile. I am mortal.
I hate that most of all.
Even if, by some miracle, I could be better than them, I will never be one of them.”
“Is this fun?” I call to the shore. I am so furious that there’s no room for being scared. “Are you enjoying yourselves?”
“My foot slips on slick rocks, and I am under, swept downstream helplessly, gulping muddy water. I panic, snorting into my lungs. I thrust out a hand, and it closes on the root of a tree. I get my balance again, gasping and coughing.”
“We can curse you to wither away for want of a song you’ll never hear again or a kind word from my lips. We’re not mortal. We will break you. You’re a fragile little thing; we’d hardly need to try. Give up.”
“Never,” I say.”
“I think about how much I hate them and how much I hate myself.”
“a different person is looking back at me.
Maybe the person I might have been if I’d been raised human.
Whoever that is.”
“But when I see human families all together, especially families with sticky-mouthed, giggling little sisters, I don’t like the way I feel.
Angry.
I don’t imagine myself back in a life like theirs; what I imagine is going over there and scaring them until they cry.
I would never, of course.
I mean, I don’t think I would.”
“Knighthood would have been boring anyway,” Vivi says, effectively dismissing the thing I’ve been working toward for years. I sigh. It’s annoying, but also reassuring that she doesn’t think it’s that big a deal, when the loss has felt overwhelming to me.”
“not giving her the satisfaction of being shocked by what she said about our parents. She acts like we don’t remember, like there’s some way I am ever going to forget. She acts like it’s her personal tragedy and hers alone.”
“A wave of panicky frustration comes over me at the sight of her intent expression. I so badly wanted her to choose me to be one of her knights. And though she can’t now, a sudden awful fear that I couldn’t have impressed her comes over me. Maybe Madoc was right. Maybe I lack the instinct for dealing death.
If I don’t try too hard today, at least I never need know if I would have been good enough.”
“My stomach is sour with the lack of food, but I no longer feel hungry. I feel sick, eaten up with nerves. I try to ignore everything but the exercises I move through to limber up my muscles.”
“There’s no shame in surrender. As Taryn said, they’re just words. I don’t have to mean them. I can lie.
I start to lower myself to the ground. This will be over quickly, every word will taste like bile, and then it will be over.
When I open my mouth, though, nothing comes out.
I can’t do it.”
“I stagger past the tournament tents to a stone fountain, where I splash my face with water. I bend down, starting to clean the gravel from my knees. My legs feel stiff, and I am shaking all over.
“Are you all right?” Locke asks, gazing down with his tawny fox eyes. I didn’t even hear him behind me.
I am not.
I am not all right, but he can’t know that, and he shouldn’t be asking.”
“What happens when they turn out my pockets? What happens when they rip my stockings? What happens when they scatter my salt in the dirt?”

More Xillia with my older sister happened:
The Ivar solo fight was difficult (it was hard on my first playthrough too) so in order to avoid wasting time grinding I took over. It still took me 3 tries. Ivar is a bit of a bastard.
She's gotten better at snap-pivoting and aerial recovery! I'm proud of her for evolving past button mashing :)
Not a fan of Leia (I didn't really expect her to be since she doesnt like Elize and didn't like Rose as much either) but over time warmed up to her. As long as she's not doing her peppy thing she's fine
Accused Milla of malingering (lol). "If she's good enough to fight then she should be fine. Stop coddling her." Ironically, that sounds like something Milla would say
Somehow or another Jude's dad's reaction to the carrier pigeon turned into a bit about a bloodline curse that will turn Jude into a pigeon someday. We're kinda skimming the dialogue so might as well make up our own lore
Like when Milla was explaining how the necklace she gave Jude came from a group of children Milla played with when she was young, my sister added the detail that all of the children died shortly afterward. This necklace is all that's left of them.
My sister immediately shipped Ivar with Leia to my surprise (that's an interesting rare pair but I could see it). Turns out she just wanted them both to go away so they could get them married and take Teepo with them 😅
This sounds like a lot of complaints but we are both having fun I think. She still likes Alvin best though she agrees he is obviously up to something
Her: "The sunset reminds Alvin of home? Where is his home? Did he say?" Me: "...No."
She really likes expanding the shops, looking for treasure and shiny things, and the cute monsters like the skunks and polwiggles. She even commented that the field music is nice (I agree). We just arrived at Xian Du which I think is one of my favorite town designs so I'm looking forward to exploring that next time
(this is part 4. masterpost here)

There hasn't been a murder in Lhant in over ten years. So when former Major Victoria is slaughtered in the street, the whole town is terrified. Determined to protect his expecting wife, brother and adopted daughter, Lord Asbel Lhant will do anything to guarantee Lhant stays peaceful even as the war rages outside of Hyland Kingdom. As he struggles to keep his composure, his province sits on the cusp of pandemonium. The killer, a mysterious woman from Gand, claims she's Sister Velvet Crowe. Moreover, she refuses to answer any questions until she's allowed to negotiate her release. It's an unbelievable claim. Everyone knows Velvet Crowe has been dead for the last decade. However, when Lhant's resident priest Sorey finds evidence to back up all of her claims, all hell breaks loose.
"Asbel swore that as long as he is Lord of Lhant, blood would never darken the streets of his province again. Hyland's war is over. Leave the battle with Elympios to the rest of the world. They did their part. Yet as viscera zigzags through the cobblestones of Lhant Port, Asbel can't help but feel the war claw at their doors again. "

Grima Li's Friends Angela and Jude
I've decided to introduce Angela and Jude, Grima's two best friends as they will be in the V Experiences as well. Idk, here ya go
Tagging: @birdgirl69 @clevermentalitybeliever @dhalia111 @cantcopewithlosingv @krazy06 @thedyingmoon
***
Grima woke up on a lovely Thursday by some light seeping through the curtains. The only reason why she liked Thursday mornings was because she got to see her friends. The little monstress got out of bed and went to the bathroom to brush her jagged teeth, then running back to her room to put on clothes. Grima always wore a black overall dress and a long sleeved black and white striped shirt, she put on her black socks and booties before dashing down the hall, she jumped on the railing and slid down all the way to the end of the stairs.
"Bye mom" The five eyed child tried to say, I turned the door knob and opened the door to go to my favorite place where my best friends meet up "Wait Grima!" Alexandra shouted from the kitchen, Grima walked onto the porch and turned around to wait for her mother, who dashed down the hall to give her a small brown lunch bag. "Here's your lunch; spicy tuna balls, apple slices with peanut butter, and an apple juice." Alexandra said handing her daughter the lunch bag, the many eyed monstress took the little brown bag and stared at her mother; this was how Grima smiled.
"Thank you mom." The little monstress tried to say, mom noticed that I forgot to put on my face mask "Wait a minute, you forgot something~" Alexandra sang, as she reached into her pocket. The male headed monstress grabbed a white face mask and placed it on the lower half of Grima's face "I've completely forgot about that mom, thank you." She slurred, Alexandra kissed her child's forehead before she dashed off the porch and down the street.
Out of town, where the flowers grew as tall as trees, where the grass was rich, soft, and green. On the tallest hill stood a drooping cherry blossom tree that looked like a cupped hand. Oh how its beautiful petals blew out to the grasslands. That, is where Grima and her friends relaxed.
Sitting on the hill as well was a red and white checker-like blanket sitting under the shade with two monsters sitting in the shade. The five eyed monstress' eyes widened, she ran towards the hill as fast as her legs could carry her "Good evening!" She shouted, waving a hand in the air for them to see, "Good evening!" She didn't stop screaming that until she got up the hill, and sat on the picnic blanket "Good... Evening..." Grima panted. Her friends, Jude and Angela looked at the panting mknstress and smiled "To you as well, Grima" Jude replied, bowing his large head.
Jude Light was a thirteen year-old air headed boy who had a giant dim lit lightbulb for a head while his body was made out of wire, nuts, and blots he could feel, but it wasn't necessary for him to eat. The inner part of his lightbulb always shined purple, but if he was happy; it'd shine yellow, if he was sad; blue, if he was angry; red, if he was scared; dark purple, if he was embarrassed; pink, and if he was disgusted; green. His emotions was based on color. Jude wore a sailor shirt with blue shorts and a sailor hat, he came from the other side of Rabbit Hole thus to the way he speaks. But for some reason, just to piss Angela and Grima off, he'd speak in rhyme whenever he could. Not to mention he always rode on a unicycle everywhere he went.
Angela looked at Jude and nodded, Angela Marionette was a twelve year-old puppet made out of the finest mahogany in the United Kingdom, she had long lucious red hair and always wore dresses that went above her knees, she always wore flats and sandals; she dressed like a rich, popular girl while Grima dressed in black to make herself feel not so insecure. Angela's father always painted up her face to make her look flawless, making Grima jealous as Angela had lips and she didn't, but they did have a few things in common; their mouths moved up and down whenever they spoke, they usually grew tired of Jude's antics, They had dreams, and were only daughters in their family. She wore a blue dress with a yellow bow that rested on her ponytail. She wore her black flats that sat in the grass.
"How's everyone's day going so far?" Angela asked, I looked at her before crossing my legs under my dress "It's great." said Grima who leaned towards them "I'm glad your day is swell, Grima." Jude said with enthusiasm, he always enjoyed cutting Angela off.
One day, she'll knock him off his feet, literally.
Angela scoffed at Jude before looking at me, continuing to talk to me "So Grims, what did your mother make you?" She asked, gesturing towards her small friends lunch bag, the many eyed monstress looked at her lunch bag before reaching inside and placing the food on the blanket "Spicy tuna balls, apple slices with peanut butter, and an apple juice." Grima slurred pointing at her lunch, Angela gave her friend a warm gesture by biwing while Jude pouted, "I have a ham and cheese sandwich, orange slices, and a grape juice" she said holding up her juice box, Grima smiled and held up her juice box as well, Jude crossed his arms and huffed "I'm so jealous of you both," he spat as his tungsten filament started to glow red "you two can eat, and I can't shove anything down my mouth." He muttered putting on a frown. Yes, he had some what of a face inside the lightbulb, it was from the tungsten filaments, a zigzag for a mouth and two beady eyes. "Oh hush Jude, you aren't missing out on much." Angela teased, taking a bite of her sandwich, the monstress pulled down her mask and picked up one of her spicy tuna balls, taking a huge bite. The little monstress covered her mouth so her friends wouldn’t see her food being mashed up.
"But it's not fair, Angela, that's what I'm saying. Please, just hush up, eat your sandwich, and stop playing." Jude snapped, Grima looked at Angela who was getting angry for what Jude said to her, she fumbled before looking around to see if anyone was around to see what she'd do, Angela put up a finger and tapped rapidly on Jude's head. A loud ting came from the lightbulb.
Ting ting ting ting
"Pleeeeeease stooooop thaaaaaat" Jude begged, "I'm gonna be siiiiiiick" Grima couldn't help but laugh as she poked the straw into her juice box and took a few sips "Fine," Angela sighed, she turned her head and looked away from us "then apologize!" She snapped, Jude fumbled before looking at the monstress, Grima pointed her chin at Angela; she was right, he should've never said that. Jude sighed, his color went back to its  regular purple. "Angela," he twiddling his index fingers together, "I'm terribly sorry for saying that. Could you ever find a place in your heart to forgive a lowlife fool like me?" Jude said in a low voice. Just then, Angela turned around, staring into the lights "Ok Jude," she sighed, "I forgive you." the two shared a hug before looking at Grima, if she could give them a warm smile she would, so the monstress gave them warm eyes that comes with the smile instead.
A loud noise zoomed over our heads, it made the wind blow through my hair as well as Angela's, and it knocked Jude's hat off his head. "Crikey! What on earth was that?" Jude exclaimed, the five eyed monstress brushed her hair down before turning around "It's uh- helicopter" Grima replied, she didn't take her eyes off the helicopter as it flew over the town. "Must be from those revolting humans!" Angela snorted, the monstress looked back at the marionette, who's eyes were filled with disgust. "Are they watching us from that helicopter?" Grima asked looking back at the disappearing helicopter.
Ever since she was born, the helicopters have been flying over town.

Review: HIVESWAP ACT 1 by Whatpumpkin Studios (2017)
Tumblr media
Genre/Tags: Atmospheric, Puzzle, Adventure, Parallel Worlds, Multiple Protagonists, Female Protagonist, LGBT Protagonist, Humor, Science Fiction, Lore Heavy, Multi-Part, 2D.
Warnings: Genocide and emotional abuse/neglect are both pretty heavily referenced. They’re both called out for being awful.
Playthrough Notes: I’m told stuff you do affects future acts as well as the parallel game. But I have absolutely no idea what notable things I’ve really done at this point, so… lol?
My Rating: 4 / 5 (Recommended)
**Minor Spoilers and My Thoughts Follow**
Xefros, I am going to do my absolute best to raise your standard of friendship to the point where having your name remembered is not the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you. -Joey
Tumblr media
My Summary: While this is takes place in the same universe/continuity as Homestuck, it’s its own distinctive side-story. Evidently this game will be published in four acts with a sequel/parallel game called Hauntswitch, also comprised of four acts. Which I guess makes for eight games total? That’s crazy.
You play primarily as JOEY CLAIRE, who is playing outside with her brother JUDE HARLEY when they are attacked by some weird monsters. As a result, Jude holes himself up in their treehouse while Joey flees into their weird expansive mansion and hides in her room. The two of them put their heads together to navigate the now hostile homestead and solve puzzles in relatively straightforward point-and-click. You learn about Joey’s generally absentee adventurer father and her now deceased mother, and her thoughts and attitudes on a variety of things. Joey eventually escapes to the attic and uses an ancient family heirloom from her late mother to unlock a weird alien relic.
As soon as she does, however, she is thrown through a portal onto a strange alien world known as Alternia, trading places with someone from that world. Once again solving a variety of point-and-click puzzles, she explores this alien world and befriends an alien “troll” named Xefros.. She has to team up him to help with that world’s conflict and find a way home. Meanwhile, a troll named Dammek has been sent to Earth in her place, and the consequences of this are not yet known.
Tumblr media
The Good:
This game is visually quite nice. The backgrounds are hand-drawn with an immense amount of detail, and the character animations and cutscenes look very fluid. It’s good they went for the 2D approach and scrapped the 3D models, because this looks much nicer. The amount of detail in the backgrounds went a long way in making the world feel genuine and real.
Once you reach the actual “swap” part of the adventure, things really pick up in terms of story and character. I was worried because the Earth part seemed to drag a little bit, but the overarching conflict and level of world detail is appealing once you get there. That’s not to say the Earth part isn’t interesting, but the stakes are relatively minor.
The minigames were quite cool; there’s the turn-based (ish) “STRIFE” sequences which nod to the comic, and a version of SNAKE used to open doors. They’re well-animated and worked quite well. I thought it was pretty cool that they bothered to include minigames at all for a rather short and simple adventure game.
In true classic adventure game fashion, the number of interactions between items you pick up and various objects in the environment is frankly insane. I want to know who was capable of writing dozens of unique dialogues about using a jar of spice or a pigeon on every item in the game world without it falling flat. These also lead to some interesting bits of information (and amusing achievements).
The writing in general was solid with a good sense of humor. I laughed at the official title.
Unsurprisingly, the soundtrack (composed by Toby Fox and James Roach) is very good and brought the game to life. Some of my favorites were Snake Escape, That’s How I Beat Snake, Rustblood, and Wish You Were Here. Those are links if you’d like to listen.
The game feels true to some of the best aspects of Homestuck; nostalgia and the sudden emergence of surprisingly deep/complex lore. Joey’s room, for example, really brought me back to my own childhood. And, of course, most fans of Homestuck will probably be thrilled how much this game expands on troll culture and Alternia in general.
Homestuck fans will probably enjoy the references to the comic; it’s obvious who Joey and Jude’s father is, who their babysitter is, the design of the portal, etc. There’s also smaller references in dialogue and some of the objects you interact with. At the same time if you haven’t read it, these things won’t really bother you; they’re extraneous details.
I liked the characters! Joey got the most screentime. Xefros and her definitely felt the most well-rounded, but you get a glimpse of the other characters through dialogue of the main two. Probably the most interesting thing was the character relationships. The only one who feels a bit underutilized is Jude, but you do get details about him and he will be one of the stars in Hauntswitch so… make of that what you will?
Tumblr media
The Mediocre:
For being an adventure game, there really isn’t much in the way of puzzles as of this act (with one major exception). There’s some minor “use x item on x thing” parts but that’s about it. This appears to be intentional, as the game lampshades this by setting up big puzzles that get solved rather easily and calling attention to it. Overall the game seems more concerned with telling a story as you navigate various setpieces, which may or may not be your thing. I was fine with it as that’s pretty true to the premise of mspaintadventures.
It’s hard to say, as someone who read Hometuck, whether or not this is as approachable to someone unfamiliar with the source material. My thought is yes-- it’s an independent story. But there are a lot of references, and newcomers may be confused by some aspects of, say, troll culture. This might be a good starting point for people looking to get into the series because I feel like a lot of references would work well in reverse as you discover them in the comic.
I am told that this game Has Bugs, some of which are gamebreaking. I do not deduct on this because I did not personally encounter any, but it’s something to keep in mind. Save often.
The Bad:
There are some parts where it’s just really difficult to tell what the game wants you to do, which can be frustrating. It’s less puzzle solving and more mashing everything until something works. I consider that a pretty major flaw of adventure games in general.
Act 1 is short; my total play time was 3 hours. On one hand, this isn’t bad because I kickstarted this game and will be getting copies of the subsequent acts. But $7.99 for a 3 hour game is a bit excessive for people who don’t already own it. It might be better to wait for a full release.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts:
To be completely honest with you, after the development hell this game went through I expected it to blow chunks. I was surprised by how nice the game looks and feels. The story is interesting enough that it doesn’t just feel like fanservice, which was another concern of mine. It takes place in the same continuity as Homestuck, yes, but it’s very much its own thing, which makes it a good fit for fans and newcomers alike.
The concept itself is quite interesting and makes sense for the universe. I greatly enjoyed the level of detail to be found in the environment of each area. The artists working on the project really outdid themselves. And it’s always a good sign when at the end of a first “part”, I feel the desire to continue the story and see what happens to the characters.
Of course, the gameplay is also pretty good. It’s not mindblowing or anything, but other than the occasional small clickbox it plays pretty smoothly. As mentioned earlier, it feels more like a story than a game, which may or may not appeal to you.
Again, though, I think it’s priced too high for what you currently get. I assume they will release subsequent parts and bundle them for a better deal. But if I wasn’t already a fan and didn’t already pay for the game five years ago, I probably would skip on it until there was more bang for my buck. Catdeer. Whatever.

These Gnarly Rock'N'Roll Illustrations Do the Monster Mash
Steeped in the lore of Star Wars, Dungeons & Dragons, and rock'n'roll history, Brooke Penrose draws detailed heroes, villains, and monsters with backstories as rowdy as their line work.
In September 2016, the Australian illustrator began a daily monster challenge called the Monster Drawing Club. In the beginning, he fleshed-out fusions between rockstars and mythical beasts, including a Phish-inspired Fishoid, a vampire that loves Batman, and a Pumpkinhead chopping his own head off with a guitar. When the month ended, he began other challenges to generate ideas.
Part of the joy in Penrose's work appears in the detailed captions that accompany each grizzled figure. He describes demons, goblins, and creatures problems with romance, bad timing, and politics, in a way forgiving them for their "otherness." His imagination earned him gigs designing posters for bands like La Bastard and The Scouts, as well as his own group Saint Jude. He's currently working on The Post-Apocalyptic Coloring Book, which you can sneak peek along with his monster mashups in the Instagrams below.
