Covid Survival Garden Part 3 It rained all day yesterday so I left the beds alone. But they are done and ready to sow with greens. And so you get a sense of what we have here, together they measure 92 inches by 24 inches. This is plenty of space for a cutting lettuce garden of heirloom varieties plus cilantro, beet seedlings (so tasty and crunchy sauteed with their roots left on like bean sprouts), and arugula. When we want salad we'll visit the deck with scissors. . #covidsurvival #covidsurvivalgarden #raisedbedgardening #containergardening https://ift.tt/2UsL6Vi

2019 saw the emergence of Shawl Cuffs as terrific ways to control the behaviour of neckpieces - knitted and non-knitted - without poking holes in the fiber with shawl sticks, or screw-in closures that go in between stitches. . All of our shawl cuffs - all of which we hand-make in the JUL studio in Ellicott City, Maryland - are currently 20% off during our year-end sale, which ends at midnight Pacific Time on December 31. . Image: Two Silver Intaglio Shawl Cuffs in the 2-inch width securing both sides of an asymmetrical triangular shawl in a grey palette of fingering weight yarn from @sevensistersarts. . #slowfashion #knitlove #sustainablefashion #juldesigns #handmade #fairtrade #shawlcuff #leatherjewelry #fairtradefashion #organic #ethicalfashion #whomademyclothes #ecofashion #needlearts #makers #knitting #knit # #knitwear #knitweardesigner #knitwearlove #knitwearaddict #knitweardesign #knit #yarnlove #shawl #leatherclosures #knittersofinstagram #knitstagram #shawlcuff https://ift.tt/2MIYv8B

Covid Survival Garden - Part 4 Pots are part of the equation. In this red pot I sowed Edible Pod Peas (Sugar Magnolia). The pots in the background have herbs growing in them already - sage, mint, oregano, thyme. The plan is to train all.of the vining things onto wires on the porch to create a green screen as the porch gets hot afternoon sun in the summer. Last year we had Hyacinth Beans which are gorgeous and, though edible, they are more my favorite for looking than eating. This year all green screen varieties will be edible. . . #covidsurvival #covidsurvivalgarden #raisedbedgardening #containergardening https://ift.tt/33Ps4N1

I have resumed work on the grey coat that I have discovered (after going back over my Instagram!) I paused almost a year ago. I'm stitching together the abbutted seams after basting the lining pieces to each coat panel. It doesn't feel like we'll get winter this year but perhaps I will finish this project . . . . #slowfashion #sustainablefashion #juldesigns #handmade #fairtrade #organic #ethicalfashion #whomademyclothes #ecofashion #needlearts #makers #sewing #handsewnwardrobe https://ift.tt/2uem7vY

@courtney.spainhower has closed her gorgeous Quilo stole with a single JUL pedestal button in the front and we love ♥ the ease of use, security, and crisp, sleek styling that this screw-in closure adds. Screw-in pedestal buttons are the nails in your knit and crochetwear style toolbox. They are the bricks in your knit and crochetwear style foundation. Screw-in pedestal buttons go beyond closure. Put them anywhere a styling will fail and they will manage the misbehaviour of your knitwear so effectively they will free up your brainspace for things other than your shawl's persistent tendancy to fall off. . I have them in booth 405 at Stitches West. Black and truffle in the 7/8" diameter - $7.90 apiece or 4 for $30. . Get 10% off in booth 405 (near the entrance on your left as you enter) with coupon code STYLEME. . #slowfashion #knitlove #juldesigns #handmade #fairtrade #shawlpin #shawlstick #fairtradefashion #organic #ethicalfashion #whomademyclothes #ecofashion #needlearts #makers #knitting #knit #knitwear #knitweardesigner #knitwearlove #knitwearaddict #knitweardesign #knit #yarnlove #shawl #knittersofinstagram #knitstagram #shawlpattern #stitcheswest2020 #stitcheswest https://ift.tt/2PhZspH

Covid Survival Garden Part 2. The lettuce bed in the back of this image went together right after my previous post. Julian and I repurposed some wood we had gotten for a different project and I scavanged some trim wood from a pile of scrap behind the house. The lettuce bed in the foreground went together much more quickly this morning. I lined the boxes with screen that had previously been attached to the porch rails to keep the dog in before she went to live with my sister. Then cardboard went in to the box to minimize soil escaping. Then I mixed a combination of manure, humus, mushroom compost, and 'raised bed soil' which looks rather like composted shredded wood. I would have planted my seeds but the news is claiming we will have a Nor'easter. It's not clear yet exactly what that will mean for us here . . . . . #covidsurvival #covidsurvivalgarden #raisedbedgardening #containergardening https://ift.tt/2UcMnAI

Looking for scissors in Portugal Part 3. This picture was taken in Lisbon through the window of an antique shop with some old sewing tools. I would have gone in but the shop was closed. So my devoted search waited until we left Lisbon and drove away from the coast, stopping in Evora where my travelling companion wanted to search for a Roman temple (which we found) and I wanted to find a pair of scissors (which we also found). When last we left this story (because I didn't have any space left in which to post) I had caught a glimpse, through a shop window, of some scissors hanging on the wall. And so here is what happened next: . I asked my travelling companion @bruce_falkinberg to accompany me into the store to find out if the scissors I could see through the window could be used for fabric. The store was filled with metal (male) goods - hardware for house-repairs, hinges and tools, faucets and handles and knives, and scissors. I was the only woman. There was more than one style of scissors in the case and I was looking at them, comparing them, when a man approached on my left. This is where google translate comes in so handy. I had looked up what I needed: tesoura (scissors) de tecido (for fabric). He excused his English then told me he had more than those on the wall, one style that was inexpensive - around 7 euros. The other was more - around 16 euros. They were different sizes, different levels of quality. I followed him to the counter and he brought them to me from somewhere I didn't see. After he handed them to me he fetched an old shirt on which he invited me to test them. Somehow I was struck, touched maybe, by that invitation, which was so naturally (culturally) made and so surprising to me. It was an old cotton/poly mix collared shirt that had become greyish and soft with washing and wear, thin as voile, a delicacy wrought by time and the exigencies of use. At the hem I made a spiraling cut of the kind I would need to make cutting out motifs for applique. The scissors I bought, pictured in the first post in this series, were smooth and sharp, agile enough. And of course they were the ones costing 16 euros. Solingen from Germany. https://ift.tt/2Eu8H05
