One More Time (Julieta x Fem!Reader) Pt 3
Tumblr media
As always I am not a native Spanish speaker, so if I butchered a sentence or word let me know so I may correct it.
This one ended up being super long so I hope it’s something you all find worth reading.
Part 3 of 20
Pt 4
I did not make the gif.
Things to note: Julieta is a widow. Reader is 30. Talks about depression early on.
Please don’t tear it apart too harshly!
As the days passed Julieta returned to the shop daily. Sometimes to cry, sometimes to talk about Agustín. Sometimes to talk about her daughters, and sometimes when she was feeling good, a little bit of the real Julieta slipped in and she’d share a true laugh and smile.
You always provided the woman with coffee and lunch and made sure to always have cookies available. The visits from Julieta quickly became the highlights of your day.
One week turned into two. Two into four, and four into six.
“Señora Madrigal! What do I owe the pleasure?” You asked as the healer entered the shop and she rolled her eyes. You insisted on this silly line every day and even though she’d never admit it she found it charming.
“How many times do I need to tell you to call me Julieta?” She asked and headed to her usual seat.
“Hmmm at least one more time.” You mused as you brought her her coffee and lunch.
After a month and a half of daily visits you had watched the woman transform. She went from this tiny, broken, helpless woman to a healing, content, loving woman.
Her figure had begun to fill out again and you had taken notice. You had caught yourself staring at the woman often and you had to constantly remind yourself not to be rude. She was twenty years your senior, a recent widow, you had no business blushing over the woman’s figure.
You joined her moments later, offering her her regular coffee and the sandwich you had prepared in advance.
“You know you don’t need to serve me lunch every day.” Julieta said while gratefully accepting the plate.
She was no longer held hostage by her depression. Yes some days were harder than others but she was back to eating with her family. She was back to serving the community. She was back to cooking.
You hummed thinking it over.
“I enjoy doing it.” You simply responded. You enjoyed caring for the woman, another aspect you were choosing to ignore.
Julieta had quickly become your best friend. Not that anyone (including her) would know that. The only time you two spent together was huddled away in your store for a few hours and you liked it like that. You didn’t need to share her with anyone when she was here. She wasn’t pulled in multiple directions to heal people, to serve people, to please people.
Julieta blushed slightly and quickly hid her face in her mug. She had grown very fond of you, how could she not with your unbelievable kindness. You helped her out of such a dark place and never made her feel like bother. You listened to her woes and held her while she cried. You made her feel special.
“Anything on your mind today?” You asked. Even though she was doing so much better you always felt the need to ask. Depression could creep up on you when you least expected it, it was sneaky like that.
“I’m doing well today. I spent the morning with my girls. I served the community with ease. I feel good.” Juleita said with a bright smile.
You smiled just as brightly back at her. You loved days like these. When she felt good and could smile freely at you.
“¡Maravillosa! I’m so happy to hear that!”
Julieta felt her heart skip a beat at your enthusiasm. She was lucky to have such a good friendship with you. Friendship. She told herself every day that you two had a beautiful friendship and nothing more. She was an old broken widow, she loved her dear Agustín and the ring he gave her all those years ago was still clear as day on her finger. She couldn’t betray him.
“I owe so much to you.” She said putting her mug down and reaching across for your hands.
“You pulled me out of a dark place and saved me from drowning. I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you for all you’ve done.” Julieta said, squeezing your hands.
You smiled gently at her and squeezed her hands back.
“How many times do I need to tell you I don’t need to be repaid for anything.”
“I know but-“
“I believe in kindness. Being my friend is more than enough.”
Before Julieta could respond the familiar ding from above your door interrupted.
“Excuse me.” You said and released her hands.
When you went to greet the customer with your typical smile and cheer you paused. Standing in the doorframe was Luís Santiago, your ex-fiancé. He smiled at you and you frowned deeply.
“What are you doing here?”
“Can’t a guy swing by and say hello?” He replied and ventured deeper into the shop.
“No, you don’t get that privilege.” You said coldly. He faltered in his step for a second before he laughed deeply.
“You always had a sense of humor.”
The loud laugh caught Julieta’s attention. While it was common to hear laughter in your shop what was surprising was that yours didn’t follow. She knew she shouldn’t be nosey but she rose and headed up the aisle towards you.
“What do you want?” You asked and met him halfway. You didn’t want his poison entering your shop further.
“I want you back.” He bluntly stated. Of all the things to come out of his mouth you weren’t expecting that.
Years ago maybe you would have been thrilled to hear those words, but now they felt insulting. You stepped closer, not wanting Julieta to overhear the conversation.
“Leave.” You hissed. Now it was Luís’ turn to be surprised.
“Y/N I know I messed up. I regret hurting you that way. Camila was the biggest mistake.” He said and had reached up to put his hands on your shoulders, but stopped when he noticed someone else was in the shop.
“Señora Madrigal, lo siento I didn’t realize anyone was here.” He said and let his hands fall.
“How are you?” He asked her over your shoulder.
Julieta’s eyes darted between him and your back. She couldn’t see your face but your body language told her you were tense. She frowned at it.
“Muy bien.” She said and took a step out of the aisle.
There was a moment of awkward silence before Luís finally had enough of it.
“Okay, well Y/N think it over. I look forward to your response….adios Señora, disfruta tu día.”
“Gracias.” Julieta responded and watched as the man departed the store.
She watched as he hurriedly passed by the storefront window before her eyes fell onto you. You hadn’t moved but the tension your body held seemed to ease.
“Y/N are you okay?” Julieta asked. She had only seen you tense up when it came to her and her previously dark thoughts and eating habits.
You took a moment before turning to face her with a large but forced smile.
“Of course! Why wouldn’t I be?” You replied and moved in her direction.
“Come, finish eating.” You urged and walked past her, taking your regular seat and grabbing your coffee.
Julieta frowned but followed you back and took her seat. For the rest of her visit you were off and distracted. Your hands were twisting the material of your dress and you kept shooting glances back towards the front. Julieta tried a few more times to get you to confide in her but you insisted you were fine.
The two of you exchanged goodbyes as usual but before Julieta received her typical hug you had rushed back into the shop, vanishing into a back room.
——
For the rest of the day Julieta was anxious. She passed out arepas as usual but her mind was elsewhere. As she worked she noticed the man who came to the shop earlier. He was chatting up her eldest daughter and the sight made Julieta uneasy.
“Isabela, who was that?” Julieta asked as she approached her daughter while the man departed.
“Luís Santiago. A real playboy.” Isabela said, rolling her eyes.
Ever since she broke up with Mariano she had been enjoying her life. Though that gave anyone with a pulse the thought that ‘they could be the one’ and she was constantly being approached.
“I see.” Julieta said, her gazing following him until he vanished.
“Though maybe he’s changing his ways. He requested a pretty intricate bouquet.”
Julieta’s eyes snapped back to her daughter.
“Did he mention who they were for?”
“No, just that it was for someone important.” Isabela stated and looked at her mother curiously.
“Why?”
“Oh no reason, I was just curious.” Julieta replied as nonchalantly as she could. Isabela hummed but let it go.
“Well I’m going to go get to work on it. I’ll see you later.” She said and hugged her mother before heading back to casita.
Returning to her booth she finished her self imposed shift and made her way home to prepare dinner. The rest of the night she was uneasy so finally before bed she went to Isabela’s room.
“Mom? You okay?” She asked when she saw her mother at her door.
“Sí mi vida. I was just curious to see that bouquet you were talking about earlier.”
A bit surprised that her mother remembered the earlier conversation, she gladly welcomed her into her room and retrieved the bouquet.
Julieta knew her daughter’s gift was incredible but this flower arrangement was beyond stunning. Various orchids and Columbian roses were grown and arranged. The shades of pink were rich and vibrant.
“Isa, it's beautiful!” The brunette exclaimed, earning a grin from her daughter.
“I outdid myself this time. It’s so rare people ask for intricate bouquets like this. Whoever is getting this is getting some of my best work.” She noted.
Julieta had almost forgotten that that man, Luís, had requested these and chewed her lip anxiously.
“Sí they will be well received.” Julieta replied. Isabela caught the act but didn’t question it.
The two women bid each other goodnight and when her mother left, lsabela stared at the bouquet. Luís was such a creep, he jumped from woman to woman with no concern and had a trail of broken hearts following him. Maybe she shouldn’t contribute to more of his heartbreak, but the bouquet was too beautiful to not share. She prayed her earlier assessment of him changing was true.

Maybe the reason the Evil Madrigals are so protective of Mira is because they almost lost her? For Antonio and Camilo it's a learned behavior but imagine if Mirabel was born real early but managed to survive her tough babyhood but after that everyone was protective. It's enhanced when she doesn't get a gift which is a protection everyone else has.
That could be a thing 👁👁 She might have been weak bodied as a child, and even as she got older and healthier, the family was still scared she might randomly fall I’ll, and that no matter how much of Juleita’s food she eats, she won’t get better.
So, after her ceremony (and Alma yelling at the candle for an hour and a half straight after she found her nieta crying in her room <\3), Alma and the family just doubled down on the protective factor. Mirabel also knew they were protective, so she didn’t really take notice to just how far they were willing to go keep her safe.
Mirabel talking about her “quirky” family to the villagers vs what the villagers see:

Thinking of Encanto Pepa Madrigal and how thunder hurts her eldest child and lightning is just not a good thing to have around kids, how the first time Camillo was just slightly too much and Pepa was really only slightly annoyed and then he's suddenly crying, his newly received powers going hay-wire because his mother's cloud zapped him and Pepa was so scared and screaming for her sister Julieta just like she has done so many times before (when Bruno says something that spooks her and he's left munching on Julieta's hastily prepared meals) and her being so hesitant when carrying Antonio and loving him from a distance as best as she could so it's Felix and Mirabel and his siblings that hugged him the most when he's growing up.
Thinking of how the first few days and then weeks and then eventually years after her failed coming of age, Mirabel never got to carry much of anything because Luisa always did it in her stead because her little sister doesn't have a gift but Luisa is the strongest and it's done out of love but Mirabel will always remember how it feels like to be treated as helpless and in the way (just the generally albeist treatment of Mirabel her whole life, a mixture of overprotectiveness and exasperation because everything has to be done for her because she's missing something everyone else has so it must mean she can't do anything).
How Camillo eventually got used to being told of how they 'need another-' and never really heard anyone ever 'need a Camillo'. He's never had trouble returning to his original form because magic, but there are long moments where he doesn't need to and sometimes that scares him just a tiny bit.
Of the first time Isabella heard the word perfect in association to her and the many imperfect things she'd done before she got the hang of what perfect is supposed to look like, and stand, and talk, and walk, and eat, and smile, and breathe.
When Luisa was first complimented of how strong she was and the second and the third and when was the last time anyone has called her pretty, or complimented the color combination she'd thought over last night, or even how she arranged the city structures into pleasing and practical patterns and designs.
Dolores hearing too much as a kid and she repeats one wrong thing and the frown on the others' faces and their eyes as they realized what they don't want her to hear and knowing they'd have no choice in it, and having to learn which and how much is she allowed to admit to knowing and knowing things she'd rather not and then knowing things she'd rather not so it's better to keep it all in.
Julieta picking up after everyone and there's honestly nothing she'd rather be doing except her brother is missing, lost, gone and her mother is always hard on her daughter who's never done anything but strive for the same expectations Julieta had once chased after too, and her eldest is holding in too much of herself, her second is holding up too much, and nothing is holding Mirabel and she fears for her youngest eventually drifting away -pushed away like her brother must've/could've been.
Do they even have friends, how hard must it be to be held in a pedestal -gods, protectors, leaders- by the entire community your family established and still upkeep, with responsibilities (not unlike that of royalties in amount if not in the exact act) expected of you, who do you go to when everything becomes too much, because everyone in your family already is holding too much.
And Abuela fearing every day for that moment when they lose what had made them, of all people, deserving of all these gifts (she doesn't know what that is, not yet), terrified of the life they had come from and what they could return to, seeing and hearing and feeling Pedro's last moments and the possibility of it being Pepa/Bruno/Julieta/Isabella/Dolores/Luisa/Camillo/Mirabel/Antonio being in his place one day, with her having to watch their backs to her as they're run down and cut down and her screams multiplied to a thousand by the rest of the families.

Tumblr media
i haven’t left my house—my room since i woke up. and that was close to two hours ago. today was a “special day”, my birthday, and yet nothing felt special about it. i was excited for the days leading up, but now i just want it to be over. so, i lay in bed, not knowing what to do. it all just seems so bland.
knock knock knock
there goes laying in bed for another hour. i get up, grabbing my shawl and throwing it over my shoulders. opening the door, no person awaits on the other side, but some furry little creators. they each make little noises of their own, speaking in a way i don’t understand. i smile though. antonio was for sure behind this. he was a sweetheart. “give me a minute.” i tell them before closing the door to go back and change out of my nightgown. i’m barely slipping my shoes on when the animals bang on my door again, impatiently no doubt. i laugh, stumbling out the door with my shoes finally on. the animals all skitter around me, leading me to la casa madrigal. i’d thought about going over the moment i awoke, but i didn't want to be a bother. i go over tons and it’s like a second home, but somehow it still felt troublesome for me to be over. especially with bruno returning only just a couple months ago, i don’t want to be in the way of family bonding time. i mean, the man was gone for ten years, living in the walls as pepa told me, so, of course, they need time.
la casita let the animals and me in the moment we stepped foot on the property, taking me to the center of the entrance room. i sway a bit, trying to balance myself after being moved so fast and suddenly by la casita. as i look around, i notice decorations put in every corner and the amazing smell of food coming from the kitchen. a banner is hung high from the upstairs balcony, painted beautifully feliz cumpleaños y/n!
oh…
“happy birthday!” each member of the family pops out from upstairs, grinning from ear to ear and shouting to me. i laugh loudly, feeling a prick of tears in the corner of my eye. pepa comes running down the stairs, catching me in an embrace and whispering a smaller happy birthday to me. i thank her, looking past her and seeing the rest of the family coming to give me a hug. they do so and i accept each one. i even got one from bruno. i’d spoken to the man only a few times. during the rebuild of their casa and the very few times i was over and we bumped into each other.
“happy birthday, y/n. we hardly know each other, but any friend of pepa’s is a friend of mine!” he exclaims grinning widely. i smile. “thank you, bruno.”
pepa brought me back into her arms. light rain had started to sprinkle over us as a cloud formed over her head. “why didn’t you come over sooner?” she asks. félix gently moves her back, saying she’d get me wet. “good question.” i smile awkwardly, looking around to find anything to get the conversation off my absence. “better question, why haven’t you been coming around at all?” damn you, camilo.
“yeah, tía y/n, we hardly ever see you anymore!” antonio frowns.
“i almost forgot what you looked like!” camilo changes to look like me and no matter how many times he does it, it still looks weird to see me from others point of view.
“tía y/n, are you okay? it’s like after la casita was rebuilt you disappeared…” mirabel frowns too. i chuckle awkwardly. that’s what i do, i laugh in situations that are not for laughing. “i came over a few times.”
“you came over three times in the last two months, dear.” juleita says, putting a hand on my shoulder. i look around me and everyone seems so sad because of my absence. i did not expect this.
“sorry. i wanted to give you all some time to recover from the whole miracle disaster thing, catch up with bruno and stuff.” i glance over at said man. he gives me a small lopsided smile and i can't ignore the small skip of my heart beat.
“mija, you are practically part of la familia madrigal, you should be here with us.” alma said, taking my hands into hers. she said she always considered me like another daughter when i'd gotten really close with pepa and came around la casa to help around whenever i could. albeit, she wasn’t as hard on me as she was the rest of her family.
“right…”
“shall we eat? mamá made all your favourites!” mirabel grabbed me by the arm and dragged me to their dining room. i took a seat next to pepa, camilo on my other side, bruno across from me. i looked at all the food and it was indeed all my favourites. “thank you.”
“you’re welcome, tía, it was all my idea really.” camilo boasts, handing me the cream. i laugh. “oh, really?”
“it’s true,” pepa smiles fondly. “he asked if we could throw you a surprise a few days ago.”
“you’re his favourite tía.” dolores says nonchalantly. camilo laughs nervously. “that’s not true…”
“i heard you muttering about how much you missed her.” dolores smirked. pepa cooed and reached around me to squeeze his shoulder. he groans. i lean over and give him a hug, squeezing him as hard as i can. “you’re too sweet, cami!”
Tumblr media
the lunch they made for me would be enough to fill me till tomorrow. i caught up with all the drama and fun i’d missed in the last couple months. i got to know bruno. he was funny, making me laugh a lot. he had a way with the kids too. they seemed to love him, even if they’d missed him half their lives. and everytime he looked in my direction i couldn’t help the blush that took over my cheeks. he was far too attractive for his own good.
“y/n?” pepa shakes me by my shoulders. i look up at her in question. “what?”
“you’re staring at mi hermano bruno.” the tease in her voice does not go unnoticed by me. we were done with lunch and had moved to sit around outside. everyone was doing their own thing. bruno just happened to be across from me in my line of sight and chatting with félix.
“shut up, pepa.”
a light sprinkle started to go again, though i did not mind. i like how she was letting her gift be what it wanted. “you and him would be so fantastic! if you and him married, you could be a part of la familia officially!” i gulp. “pepa! you are getting ahead of yourself!” the rain cloud became heavier as she got more into the idea of bruno and me. i was starting to soak a bit.
“mami! why are you drizzling?” camilo shouted over to us. dolores walked over to him and whispered in his ear. camilo looked like he was seeing stars with a large grin on his face and sparkling eyes.
i groan. “por el amor de dios.”

:) okay, I'm passing on a lil idea then to get your take on it! (pls feel free to ignore if you want)
Prompt: madrigal triplets + first gray hair(s)
waha imma pile onto this one (ramble below) + a doodle based on said ramble
Tumblr media
i'd place the triplets in their late 30's i think (timeline-wise camilo and mirabel would already be born)
pepa would be the one to get them first with how much she has to stress about her gift
bruno follows, man is anxious and i bet his visions stress him out (poor rat man)
and then there's julieta, i think she embraces them tbh
it's less noticeable on pepa seeing as she's a ginger, while bruno and julieta have dark hair, but when pepa notices she notices
cue pepa's thunder, bruno and julieta in the kitchen like "????"
pepa walks in and they're hit with a huge gust of wind
i imagine juleita tilts her head inviting pepa to explain and pepa just bursts out "a gray hair, julie!"
to which bruno snorts, he's gotta save himself from choking on an arepa he'd been snacking on
pepa is quick to turn her gaze onto bruno, sending him a deathly glare
julieta swears she's about to witness a murder (she's got the arepas ready tho)
pepa is quick to grab at bruno's ruana and tackle him to the floor (casita softens the fall for them dw)
for a second bruno thinks pepa is actually gonna throw hands so he crosses his fingers and holds his breath
imagine his surprise when pepa instead moves to grab his hair looking for a gray hair
she finds it quickly (again it stands out more on dark hair) and lets out a triumphant yell
bruno chuckles when the realization hits and he playfully calls her "vieja loca", to emphasize the gray hair situation
pepa definitely punches his shoulder at that comment to which he begins his dramatic lil attitude
"OH *insert a telenovela gasp* how could you wound your own brother! pepa, how could you do this to me! after everything we've been through together"
he plays dead and julieta is not amused, reminding them that they're taking up kitchen space
bruno doesn't move, pepa snorts at her brother's antics and watches as julieta pulls up her sleeves ready to pull bruno up
it's there that pepa notices julieta has a gray hair tucked away, "julie, you have one too!"
bruno is quick to sit up ready to tease julieta to which she raises an eyebrow, ready to revoke his food privileges
bonus: félix and agustín are their respective wife's #1 hype man, they also hype the cuñado but bruno gets embarrassed when they do
honestly this was fun! i had to draw something for it as soon as the ideas took over
