"One Pleads Guilty, Five Others Held on Drug Charges," Windsor Star. June 21, 1943. Page 3. ---- J. L. Brooks Remanded To Friday --- Admits Selling Narcotic After Mountie Tells of Buying Weed at His Home ---- Arrested by Royal Canadian Mounted Police during a drive to eliminate traffic in drugs in this area, John Lloyd Brooks, 41, Victoria boulevard, Sandwich West, pleaded guilty before Magistrate J. A. Hanrahan in county court today to one charge of selling drugs unlawfully and two other charges of selling a substance which he represented to be drugs. He was remanded to Friday for sentence.

FIVE OTHERS ACCUSED "I do not feel I need to emphasize the seriousness of the case," said William E. Kelly, special prosecutor, after Detective Corporal R. L. Woodhouse of the local detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police told the court that the basis of the charges were investigations made at Brooks premises on three different occasions. Five other persons were charged with illegal possession.

Entered as exhibits were three tinsof a drug weed seed which Corporal Woodhouse described as Cannabis Sativa. Excessive use of this drug, which may be grown in Canada, produces insanity, he said.

How a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer three times visited Brooks' home and made purchases of the weed was told by Corporal Woodhouse from the witness stand. The first visit was made on May 9 when, testified, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigator paid Brooks $25 in return for which he received a weed represented as a form of marijuana described as Cannabis Sativa. A government analysis showed the weed to test negative and a second visit was made by the same investigator May 11, he informed the court.

PAID HIM $75 "This time," Corporal Woodhouse swore, "the sum of $75 was paid to accused for a substance represented as marijuana." It again tested negative.

The final raid was made a week ago Saturday night when the same Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigator whose name was not disclosed made a purchase for $100. A few minutes later Corporal Woodhouse said the premises were raided and $90 of the money was found in Brooks' pockets.

Appearing on behalf of the accused, Hon. James H. Clark, KC, described his client as "a hard-working man who had been misled by people in this vicious business." "He tells me he went to a blind pig one night and was asked by some people if he would allow his house to be used," Clark related, stating that it was just a recent thing for his client to get mixed up in such traffic.

"I have known this man for a long time and I was very surprised when I heard about this," he said, remarking: "He is not of the criminal type."

CROWN COMMENTS When Magistrate Hanrahan asked Mr. Kelly if he had any representations to make, the special Crown prosecutor replied, "I do not feel I need to explain the seriousness of this kind of case."

When penalty was mentioned. Mr. Clark said that the only previous conviction against his client was for Assault. He asked that the sentence be as light as possible. Mr. Kelly referred His Worship to a case of a first offender who, he said, was given consecutive terms of 18 months on each of three charges and in addition $500 fines on each charge or six months more in consecutive terms. "The case was appealed and the court of appeal upheld the sentence," he stated.

"That case was much more vicious than this one," Mr. Clark submitted.

In remanding accused until Friday.His Worship said he wished time to consider sentence.

The five charged with illegal possession, Ross William Gray, 21, who appeared in a zoot-suit, Robert J. Bezaire, 28, Julian Boismer, 30, and Herman and Michael Rainone, all of Tecumseh road west, were all remanded a week for trial after they pleaded not guilty Boismer, a railwayman, asked for bail in order to go to work and it was subsequently set at $2,000.

Bail had been previously set for the others at $5,000.
