Unfinished Business - Family, Love, and Possession Chapter 3: You Always Hurt The One You Love
Chapter 2
Chapter 4
Fandom: Julie and the Phantom
Word Count: 3,829
TW: mention of refusal to eat (not related to an ED)
Summary:  After Reggie returns from his meeting with Alice, the boys have questions. Meanwhile, Julie and "Nick" begin work on a school project together.
Reggie poofed back into the studio in a manic state. In the seconds it had taken to travel from the beach to Julie’s house, a million thoughts had run through in his head. Most of them centered around the last time he had lost track of time and Julie left the band. He knew that it was not the same situation, but a part of him felt guilty they had promised to be better, and here he was, late because he had gotten distracted by a pretty girl again.
His dramatic entrance caused the music to stop. He panted as he looked over to them guiltily. A part of him was upset that they hadn’t waited for him. A quick glance at the clock revealed that Reggie was only 3 minutes late. The other part of him was ashamed at how selfish he was for even thinking that. He rushed over to Julie to beg for forgiveness. A process he was intimately familiar with.
“Julie, I am so sorry that I am late! I went out on a walk and ended up on the beach by my parents old place and I got talking to this ghost girl that I met and I lost track of time but I swear the second I heard the music I was rushing over here and-”
Reggie’s word vomit was interrupted by his bandmates.
“Reggie, it’s okay. We figured that you would hear the music and come back,” Julie reassured him.
“Wait, what did you say about meeting a girl?” Luke asked teasingly.
“You met another ghost?!” Alex proclaimed, always the one to have his priorities straight.
“Yeah, it’s kinda a long story. I’ll explain after practice.” Reggie poofed over to his bass and threw it on. Julie walked over and grabbed his arm as he began to tune it.
“Reggie. It really is okay. We, uh, we saw your note. We figured you had just lost track of time.”
“Or were just plain lost,” Alex added. Julie glared, but Reggie laughed as the tension released from his ghostly form. If Alex was being snarky, then Reggie wasn’t in trouble.
“Thanks guys.” He strummed his perfectly tuned bass. “Now let’s rock this!”
Music once again flooded the studio. The band practiced both old songs that would be kept on their set list and new ones that were being play-tested. When it came to finalizing Perfect Harmony, Julie let Luke take the reins. She claimed it was because she didn’t know the bass and drums as well as they did, which was partially true, but Julie left out the part where she didn’t trust herself to not blurt out the song’s true intentions.
Julie and the Phantoms continued like that for the next few hours. Even Julie, who still had to deal with mortal worries like eating and bathroom breaks, could have continued long on into the night. The energy that sparked when they played was something that Julie had only ever felt with one other person. It was a different energy than when she played with her mom, but it was no less strong. The core of it, the feeling of making music with those you love about those you love, was still there.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. As she eyed the clock, she knew that Nick would be over soon for dance practice. There was a part of her that wanted to flake on Nick and continue playing until she was called for dinner. Julie knew that from Luke’s puppy eyes as she packed up the equipment that she wouldn’t be judged if she did. But she knew better. Nick and her needed to practice their new routine.
Julie had just enough time to change into her comfy dance clothes before her dad called her downstairs. Nick, or Nick’s body at least, was waiting in the doorway. Caleb grinned at Julie with the same enthusiasm he provided new club guests.
“Hey!” Julie called from the banister. Caleb waved innocently. “Dad, this is Nick. He’s my partner for my dance class project. The choreography assignment?”
Ray snapped his fingers as the memory returned to him. “Right. Well, I will let you two get to it then.”
Ray disappeared back into the kitchen. Caleb climbed the stairs and followed Julie to her room. It was…small. And quaint. Sheet music and homework were strewn across the floor. In an odd way, it reminded Caleb of his own childhood room where he first practiced magic. That room had been less pink, but it held the same drive. The same ambition. He chuckled at the thought.
“What’s so funny?” Julie asked innocently.
“Nothing,” Caleb responded, thinking quickly of a cover story, “I just never would have thought your room was so…messy.”
“Yeah, one thing they don’t tell you about joining a band is how messy it makes you.”
“How has your band been lately?”
“Good. They’ve been good. We’re working on some new songs.” Julie giggled as she recalled Reggie’s belated arrival. “Our bassist, Reggie, was running a little late. I felt so bad because I could tell he felt bad-”
“How late was he?” Caleb took a risk in interrupting Julie. He didn’t want to push the boundaries just yet, but he was curious.
“Only a few minutes. We hadn’t even finished running the first song.”
“Why would he feel bad about being a few minutes late?”
Julie suddenly became quiet. Caleb contorted his face to look sympathetic as she spoke. “You remember at the dance when I canceled the show? It wasn’t just nerves. The guys had kind of bailed on me that night. I got really mad after. I think Reggie was afraid that the same thing would happen again.”
Inwardly, Caleb smiled as he saw the cracks he could play with. “What could have been more important than your first official performance?”
Julie shrugged. “It’s a long story. Besides, it’s all in the past now. Water under the bridge and all that.”
Caleb nodded. He decided not to push the subject anymore tonight. Not before he could set his newfound plan in motion.
He pulled a CD out of his black overshirt. “I found a song that I think would work really well for the project. Do you mind if I put it on?”
Julie nodded and put the CD in her mom’s old stereo. She was shocked when the song that came on was an old jazzy song. She didn’t know that Nick was into the old classics.
Caleb offered his hand to Julie as he began to show Julie the choreography that he had developed just for this number. It was difficult to maneuver in the small bedroom, but he made it work.
You always hurt the one you love
The one you shouldn't hurt at all
You always take the sweetest rose
And crush it till the petals fall
After one particularly complicated twirl, Julie stared back at Caleb, impressed. “Wow. For someone who claims to have two left feet, you sure do have some nice moves.”
“I guess I had a good teacher.”
As the music picked up tempo, Caleb spun Julie at a speed she knew she wouldn’t be able to recover from. Her feet tangled around themselves as she fell onto her bed.
“Woah. That gets fast.”
“You will get the hang of it, I’m sure. The trick is properly spotting, I believe.”
“And the student becomes the master,” Julie responded jokingly.
Caleb chuckled. “Perhaps we should move into an area with a little more space. Your music studio perhaps?”
Julie hesitated. She knew that that wasn’t an option. The guys were in there, and it was hard enough to deal with her complicated relationship with Nick without three invisible voices teasing her. She just needed a convincing enough reason not to.
“Uh, actually I don’t think the studio is a great idea. I haven’t had a chance to clean up after practice yet, and if you think my room is messy…”
Caleb nodded. He figured it was a long shot.
“But we could move the coffee table and practice in the living room,” Julie suggested.
The two did just that. Once rehearsal resumed, Caleb had to fight the urge to grit his teeth at Julie’s suggestions to modify his perfect choreography. Even he had to admit, though, some of the moves were suitable for the dance.
“Ahem.” Caleb and Julie turned to see Carlos standing in the entryway. He appeared to have been standing there for some time. “Dinner’s ready. Dad said that Nick is welcome to come if he wants.”
“Care to stay for dinner?” Julie asked.
“No thank you. I should be heading home.” As much as it would have helped to further his plan, Caleb felt himself gagging at the thought of having to eat mortal food again.
“Alright. See you in class tomorrow.” Julie saw Nick out. He gave her another signature bow which caused her to laugh. She turned to see Carlos squinting at the door.
“What?” Julie asked her brother.
“Has he always been so weird?” Carlos had never officially met Nick, but he had seen him at Julie’s concerts and heard about him from Nick’s little sister, Emma. Carlos couldn’t quite pin down what, but something about him seemed…off.
“You’re one to talk you weirdo,” Julie brushed off, jokingly ruffling Carlos’ hair. “Come on.”
Carlos followed Julie into the dining room, but not before looking back at the door. He hadn’t felt an itch like this since he saw the orbs in Dad’s photos.
“So are you going to tell us about this girl or what?” Luke hadn’t wasted any time in goading Reggie once Julie left. It was the perfect distraction from thinking about Nick and Julie up there, all alone, dancing-
“There’s not much to tell yet.” Reggie tried to brush it off, but he could barely stand still as he recounted his afternoon. “She was tagging at the pier, we started talking, and we totally hit it off.”
“A tagger? Our precious little Reginald fell for a bad girl,” Alex teased.
“Hey, I can be bad! I’m a big bad ghost in the rock band!” Reggie straightened his leather jacket and puffed up his chest. Contrary to his belief, it did not help his case.
“Right. Of course.” Alex patted Reggie on the shoulder before looking behind him. “How did a dog get into the studio?”
“Puppy?!” Reggie whirled around, his face lit up like a little kid on Christmas. He slumped at the vacant garage. “Fine. Point taken.”
“So when are you seeing her again?” Luke asked, cupping his face in his hands as he watched the drama unfold.
“Tomorrow,” Reggie answered. “She said she hangs out over at Orange Grove, so…”
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Alex asked. His bandmates were stunned into silence.
“Why wouldn’t it be?” Luke asked. “It’s not every day that our boy gets asked out on a second date!” He poofed over to Reggie and started playfully roughhousing.
“I wouldn’t call in a date, but you know-”
“What if she works for Caleb?” Alex blurted out. Luke and Reggie immediately went quite once more.
“I don’t think she does,” Reggie said, unsure, “I didn’t see her at the Ghost Club either time we were there.”
“Right. Because we were given the full employee directory of the place.”
As Reggie began to get into his own head, Luke turned to face Alex. “Come on, man. Caleb can’t have every ghost in LA under his control. Besides, that doesn’t mean that she’s evil. I mean, Willie wasn’t-”
“Yeah, Willie is not as good a comparison as you think,” Alex responded, growing cold.
Luke and Reggie eyed each other in confusion.
“What do you mean?” Reggie asked. “You still like him, right?”
“Yeah, I do,” Alex answered as all the pent up feelings about Willie and their relationship came flooding out, “I really like him. I also have been searching for him for the past two days with no trace of him in sight. I don’t know if he is okay, or if he is even still here. And if he is, I know that I can never be with him because Caleb would use that to hurt both of us. And that hurts. It hurts so much knowing that you can like someone so much, and never be with them. Not because they don’t like you back. But because you just can’t.” He turned to Reggie, full of sincerity. “I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.”
Reggie walked over and wrapped Alex in a giant hug. The tears that had been welling in Alex’s eyes began to pour. Hesitantly, Luke came over and joined them. His own eyes were beginning to tear up. He couldn’t admit it yet, not even to himself, but Luke knew exactly how Alex felt.
“Why don’t you guys come with me tomorrow?” Reggie asked as he pulled away. “That way, you guys can meet Alice, and we can do, like, a collective vibe check.” Reggie hoped that he had used the slang Carlos taught him right, but the other two were no help.
“I’m not entirely sure what the last part meant,” Alex started, “But that’s actually not a bad idea.”
“Totally,”  Luke added, “And who knows, maybe she has a clue on where Willie is.”
Alex nodded, but the smile he gave had no heart behind it. Luckily, before he had to say anything, Julie came running in out of breath.
“Hey guys…there’s something I have to tell you…”
The Molina's dinner table had been abuzz in a way that it had not been in a very long time. Julie and Ray laughed as Carlos recounted a story from baseball practice earlier that day. He got into it as he ran around the table and acted out all of his teammates. They were laughing so loud that they barely heard Tia Victoria come in. Carlos had to slide the spare plate for their Mom over to Julie who hid it under the table as Tia rounded the corner.
“Hola everybody!” She shouted as she approached the table. She gasped at the sight in front of her. “No leftovers! That is excellent!”
“Well, after Julie’s performance the other day, I’ve been inspired to try some new recipes.” Ray smiled over at his daughter.
“I love to hear it. And excellent job on your performance, mija.” Tia ran over and squeezed the life out of Julie in her embrace. “Just remember to keep up your studies. You’ll need good grades when you get a real job one day.”
Julie’s shoulders slumped as she tried to keep up her fake smile. She loved her Tia, and she had been a godsend after Mom died, but there had always been a disconnect when it came to music. She had only ever viewed Julie’s love of music as a hobby, one that Julie was really good at, but a hobby nonetheless. Julie couldn’t help but feel a little angry that Tia always put down the one thing that made Julie feel closer to her mom.
Luckily, Ray came to the rescue. “Actually, Julie has a real shot at going professional.” Before Tia could roll her eyes, Ray continued, “I was meaning to tell you this after dinner. I did some digging, and it turns out that Destiny Management was looking for a freelance photographer for a recent photoshoot.” Julie’s eyes widened as she recognized the name. Destiny Management was one of the biggest record companies in a city full of big record companies. Where was Dad going with this?
“You remember the woman who talked to you after your performance at the cafe?” Ray asked.
“You mean the night that she snuck out after you expressly grounded her,” Tia reminded the table.
Ray ignored the comment. “Well it turns out that her name is Andi Parker. She’s of the uh, higher ups there. I ran into her while at the photoshoot, and she gave me this.”
Ray handed Julie a business card with the Destiny Management logo on it. Butterflies exploded in Julie’s stomach as she realized what was happening.
“She’d love to meet with you and the band,” Ray confirmed. “I’m welcome to of course, seeing as you're still a minor. If you’d like I’d be more than happy to make the call and set up the meeting. I don’t know anything about band contracts, but I have some knowledge from my freelance contracts and-”
“YES! Thank you thank you thank you!” Julie ran around the table to tackle her dad in a massive hug. “I have to go tell everyone.” Julie quickly put her dishes in the washer and ran out of the room.
Her adrenaline spiked as she ran to the studio to tell the guys the good news. In a few days, that might have a manager or a record deal! Julie came bounding through the garage door, only stopping briefly to catch her breath.
“Hey guys…there’s something I have to tell you…”
If Julie was riding an all-time high, Nick was at an all-time low. Not long after Caleb left, he collapsed onto his couch from pure exhaustion. It hardly felt fair that he could still feel the workout from dance practice today. If Caleb was going to hijack his body, the least he could do was take the muscle fatigue with him.
The thought sent Nick’s blood boiling once again. He had been trapped in the darkness, clawing for any semblance of control that he could cling to. Finally, he managed to regain his sight. He couldn’t control his body, but he could see what Caleb was doing with it. And did he see? Caleb and Julie dancing along to some oldies music. It made Nick thankful for when the darkness consumed him once again.
“Here.” Nick was brought out of his thoughts by a plate of hot food being placed on the coffee table. William shuffled back into the shadows as he mumbled, “You’re…you’re probably hungry, so.”
Nick cautiously picked at the chicken and rice in front of him. There was a part of him that wanted to throw it across the room. Refuse anything that was given to him by Caleb or his lackey. But Nick hadn’t eaten much for breakfast, and judging by the grumblings in his stomach, Caleb hadn’t eaten anything today either. He tentatively took a bite. It wasn’t bad. As far as prison food went, it was actually pretty good. It satisfied the hunger at least.
“So, how long is this expected to last?” Nick asked. He figured that he might as well try talking to William again. Not like he had anything else to do.
“What?”
“This.” Nick gestured vaguely into the air. “Should I expect to put regularly possessed by a ghost on my college applications?”
“No,” William answered. “It shouldn’t take long. Just long enough for Caleb to get what he wants.”
“Which is?” Nick was met with silence once again. He sighed, deciding to try a different tactic. “What about you?”
“Huh?”
“What about you William-”
“Willie.” Willie interrupted, spitting acid as he corrected Nick.
“...Willie. When you’re not guarding possession victims, what do you do?”
“I…I like to skateboard.” A small wistful smile grew on Willie’s face.
“Where?”
“Anywhere, honestly. Skateparks, the streets, the road, museums. When people can’t see, hear, or touch you, I can skate pretty much anywhere.”
“Wait, if people can’t see you, then how are we…” Nick trailed off as he gestured between the two of them.
Willie shrugged. “Caleb’s magic, I guess? I’ve never been quite sure just how much he is capable of. Just that he’s capable of a lot.” Willie absentmindedly rubbed the stamp on his forearm.
“How’d you even end up tangled with him?” Nick asked. So far, Willie seemed like a decent dude. Not what one would expect as a goon for an evil mastermind.
Willie chuckled. “It’s a long story. The short version is that I was promised something too good to be true. I found out too late that it’s because it was.”
Nick sighed. As much as his sympathy was growing for Willie, there was only so much small talk he could take before his mind circled back to the reason they were even able to talk in the first place. “Look, I know you probably won’t, or can’t, tell me, but I have to know: does he plan to hurt Julie?”
Willie was silent for a long while. He knew that talking to Nick was a bad idea. The longer he talked, the more Willie was liable to do something to get him into more trouble. But when he looked at Nick, at the sorrow and fear in his eyes, there was only so much that Willie could take.
“The truth is I don’t know. I don’t even know if Julie is the one he is actually after.”
“What?”
Willie sighed, realizing that he had already said too much. “Julie is connected to people Caleb is interested in. Ones that he wants working for him. They managed to escape, but he is not sure how. It’s possible that he is after Julie, but she might just be a means to an end.”
“Well then maybe we can warn them and they can help-”
“NO!” Even Willie was shocked at how forceful his shout was. He immediately shrunk back on himself. “No, no, if they're not involved anymore, I can’t risk dragging them into it. I won’t do that to him again.”
“Him?” Willie turned away from Nick, remaining silent. He knew that talking would be a bad idea.
“Willie,” Nick stood and approached the ghost slowly, “One of these people, you care about him a lot, don’t you?”
Willie stood back in the kitchen. He refused to speak. He knew that if he tried to open his mouth, he would either begin to word vomit about Alex or break down and cry. He wasn’t sure which would be worse.
Nick gently tried to place a hand on Willie’s shoulder. To both of their shock, his touch landed. “Willie, if this person is connected to Julie, he could still be in danger, couldn’t he?” Willie slowly nodded his head. “Then help me get out of here. I can find him and warn him about what is going on-”
“He’s a ghost too,” Willie interrupted, the water works going in full force, “You wouldn’t be able to see him anyway.”
“I can figure that out,” Nick countered. “Please, Willie, help me escape. If not for me, do it for him.”
Those were the magic words. Willie slowly nodded and was greeted by Nick’s thankful smile. He wasn’t sure how he was going to pull it off, but Nick was right. Alex could still be in danger, and Willie would rather die again than see that happen.

staring (luke patterson x reader)
Tumblr media
of course!! i hope you enjoy!! this isn’t my best work so i’m sorry!!
word count: 1.0k
Alex hit the last note on the cymbals, smiling wildly at the other members of the band then to me.
“That was amazing,” I stood up clapping rapidly as Julie ran over and wrapped her arms around my shoulder.
“We are totally going to rock this gig,” Luke spoke up, setting his guitar to the side and skipping over to the other side of me.
Julie un-wrapped her arms around me, I was about to speak but Reggie was right in front of me, waiting for his hug.
“Come on,” I spoke, wrapping the boy in a hug which made him happy, Reggie didn’t care who gave him hugs, he just wanted them in return for everything.
“We did it, we did it,” Reggie sang lightly as he pulled away from the quick hug.
“Gotta say, I only played so good to give (Y/N) a show.”
I looked beside me at Luke, who had his never-ending cocky smile glued to his face, which I could smack off right now.
“What that’s supposed to mean,” I turned to Luke, my arms crossed over my chest. I heard Alex whistle and say something about “Go (Y/N)” but I had blocked it out as I waited for Luke to finish his thought.
“Just saying, with how hard you were staring I thought I should give you a show,” Like shrugged, taking a small step closer to me, his smirk growing when I didn’t snap back immediately.
So maybe I was staring at Luke, I mean he looked like he did. His hands ran over the Fretz cleaning, making the sound of magic stream from it. The way his muscle tee made his arms visible killed me inside.
“Actually I do have a comment,” I held up my finger, daring Luke to speak before I was finished. He stayed quiet, looking down at me dating the same thing.
I could feel the tension grow in the room, I suddenly felt bad for the rest of the group that had to watch the awkward interaction.
“I wasn’t staring at you, sorry to break it to you,” So much for a witty comment, but it was something. I heard Julie let out a laugh behind me, which earned her my elbow to her rib.
“Really, I think I saw your-“ he took two-finger and pointed them at my eyes.
“-eye following me,” he shrugged, falling back into the couch that sat behind us. I heard Julie slowly back away from behind me, mostly like leaving with Alex and Reggie.
I couldn’t blame them, the tension was like fog across the studio.
“I think you’re seeing things Luke,” I made my way across the room, running my fingers over Alex’s drum set.
“Well, I think you’re seeing things, things being me.”
I rolled my eyes, thinking of a better comeback to get myself out of this stupid situation. Why couldn’t Reggie make a comment like he normally did when this happened?
“I wasn’t,” maybe if I stopped making a big deal of it, Luke would drop it and I’d be saved from my own mistakes.
“You were,” I heard Luke stand from the couch, watching him out the corner of my eye walk to where I stood.
“So what!”
I smacked my hand over my mouth, turning to look at Luke with wide eyes. His eyebrows raised, looking at me while letting little giggles fall around his lips. He walked closer to me, cornering me to one of the beams in the studio.
“You fell from me,” Luke sang the word, smiling as he did his best to keep me in my place. I panic, trying to slip to the left to him but his arm stopped me. Those stupid beautiful arms. I looked up to him, panic swimming in my eyes as he shone down at me.
I quickly ran to his right, making it around him, but his leg jumped in front of me in panic. My body was sent to the hard floor of the studio, luckily catching myself with my hands but my wrist still hurt from the impact.
“Oh crap,” Luke turned around, bending down to make eye contact with me as he kept a steady hand on my back.
“I'm so so sorry.”
I shocked my head, flipping around so my back laid on the floor and I looked up to a panicked Luke.
“I’m good, just gonna lay here a minute.”
He nodded, turning off his knees so he was sitting beside me on the floor. I let out a laugh, closing my eyes and rolling over slightly. This whole situation was exactly how it would have happened.
I accidentally told my ghost crush I liked him and then he accidentally tripped me when I tried to run away.
“You fell for me,” Luke sang softly to himself again.
“I didn’t fall for you, you tripped me,” I corrected, smiling when he let out a loud laugh that filled the room. My own giggles followed his, a large smile painted across my face. After the laughter died off, the room was quiet and calm, completely opposite what filled the room minutes ago.
“I don’t mind that you’re staring at me, I actually like it.”
“You do,” I bite my lip, doing my best to not let out a witty comment.
“Yeah, I’d be mad if you were staring at anyone else,” he ran his shoe over the floor, making little pictures as he did so.
I said nothing, still watching the ceiling as I thought how to go about it.
“You fell for me,” I sang softly, laughing in between each word I spoke.
“Very funny,” Luke rolled his eyes, looking at me from the corner of his eye. I smiled to myself, slowly sitting up so Luke and my shoulders were touching. Luke pressed his shoulder closer, smiling when I did the same back.
“I did, fall for you.”
“Right back at you, bro,” I cringed at my own words, making a disgusted face when I looked at Luke who returned it.
“Did you just-”
“Hush,” I held my finger up to his lips, smiling at him. His eyes shimmer as the light filter into the studio and I couldn’t believe how perfect he looked.
“You’re staring.”
“Yeah, I am.”

You always melt when you hear him say it “awh Luke I love you to” and it always ends up with you guys holding each other

Okay, but I feel like this would actually happen because poor Reggie’s family fought all the time. I mean, they all had it bad, but I feel like Reggie would get really emotional. However, this is funny soooo..... 😳
Tumblr media
Yeah.. this was wayyy too acurate!
Tumblr media
NO BUT I DIED WHEN THIS POPPED UP. I LOVE REGGIE SO MUCH!
Tumblr media
No, but Luke has to have perfect pitch. So, he would definetly be able to hear the tone in someone’s voice to tell what their mood is.
Tumblr media
ALEX STILL CAN’T GET HIS DAMN HUG
Tumblr media
HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Tumblr media
I mean.....

Conversation
that one argument when Julie's favorite cup from her mom is broken
Julie: So. Who broke it?
Julie: I'm not mad, I just wanna know.
Alex: ...I did, I broke it-
Julie: No, no you didn't. Reggie?
Reggie: Don't look at me-- look at Luke
Luke: What? I didn't break it!
Reggie, leaning in: Huh. That's weird. Then how'd you even know it was broken?
Luke: Because it's sitting right in front of us. And it's broken.
Reggie:...suspicious
Luke: No, it's not!
Willie: If it matters, uh, Flynn was the last one to use it
Flynn: Liar! I don't even drink that crap!
Willie: Really? Then what were you doing by the coffee cart earlier?
Flynn: I use the chair next to it to drink my seven sodas, everyone knows that, Willie!
Alex: O-okay, let's not fight, I broke it, let me pay for it-
Julie: No, who broke it?
Luke:...Carrie has been awfully quiet
Carrie, kicking down the door: REALLY?!
*The whole darn squad arguing*
Julie, stepping out the room and yawns,: I broke it.
Julie: I burned my hand so I punched it.

Unfinished Business - Love, Family, and Possession Chapter 4: Crooked Teeth
Chapter 3
Chapter 5
Fandom: Julie and the Phantoms
Word Count: 3,510
TW: depictions of anxiety, an abusive nonromantic relationship (Willie and Caleb), and manipulation
Summary: As Willie begins his plan to rescue Nick, Julie is getting psyched out by her meeting with Andi Parker later that day. Meanwhile, Reggie introduces Luke and Alex to Alice. Can she be trusted?
One of the songs I used for this chapter is actually a fan-made song based off of the in-universe Sunset Curve/Trevor Wilson song by HwaYoun. Link to it
Willie read the address over and over. He had to make sure that he could recite it without a thought. Poofing somewhere you had never seen was hard enough, and he doubted that Caleb would let them leave without a fight.
Caleb’s power painfully pulsed through him at the thought of his upcoming betrayal. He briefly reconsidered the plan. Maybe this was a bad idea. If you could keep your head down and behave, Caleb was a forgiving person. He could play it safe and maybe-
Another jolt shocked Willie to his senses. This would never go away, not completely. Not as long as Caleb still owned his soul. He ripped up the address and threw it in a nearby dumpster before poofing back to Nick’s house.
Nick bolted up when he arrived. Willie couldn’t help the look of pity on his face. The lifer had been doing the bare minimum to keep himself alive, and it was starting to take a toll on him. The bad news that Willie had wouldn’t help.
“Are we ready?” Nick asked. The light in his eyes reignited for the first time in days.
“I’m really sorry, Nick,” Willie admitted, “We’ll have to wait until tonight.”
The light was extinguished once again. “What? Why?”
“Look, Caleb is going to be back any minute,” Willie explained, “If you want a chance of out running him, we’re going to need as big of a headstart as we can get. We’ll do it tonight after he goes back to the club.”
Nick nodded. As if on cue, Caleb poofed in with his usual dramatic flair. His eyes fell on Willie’s hand on Nick’s shoulder.
“Well, it’s nice to see that you two are getting along,” he said with a hollow smile, “Are you ready for the day Nick?”
“Why are you asking like I have a choice?!” Nick asked, throwing his arms up in the air.
Caleb chuckled. “Good. You’re learning.”
He approached and regained control of the boy. Caleb flexed as he readjusted to a living body. He smoothed down Nick’s hair.
“Any problem’s last night William?” Caleb asked.
“No,” Willie answered perhaps too quickly, “Nothing I couldn’t handle.”
“Excellent.” Caleb gave his signature smile. “I’m glad that I was able to trust you with this job. After your recent betrayal…” Caleb trailed off as a mini-jolt caused Willie to twitch. “I’m just glad that we can put the past behind us.”
“Thank you, sir,” Willie said, his eyes never leaving the floor.
“You're welcome.” Caleb made his way to the front door before turning to Willie one last time. “I would hate to drag this out longer than it has to. I never enjoy having to be the bad guy.”
Willie exhaled once the door was shut. This was a horrible idea. How did the kid convince him to do this? Alex’s face popped into Willie’s mind. He steeled himself and went over the address again. He just prayed that this worked.
Julie and Flynn coasted through the halls of Los Feliz High School. Thankfully, the mania from a couple of days ago had settled down. The occasional student would approach Julie in the hallway, but at least now she wasn’t being bombarded.
Julie had finished explaining last night’s dinner. While Julie was trying to remain calm, Flynn made no such attempt. She had been bouncing off the lockers since Julie mentioned Destiny Management.
“Dude! They are huge! You know they’re meeting to give you a record deal,” Flynn stated.
“Maybe, but it can’t be that easy,” Julie pointed out, “We’ve barely been a band for a month. Companies like destiny don’t just hand out deals to up-and-comers.”
“They do if the band has a super-awesome-talent lead singer.” Flynn rebutted, causing Julie to laugh. “Besides, you managed to play at the Orpheum in that time.”
Before Julie retorted, Flynn grabbed her arm and dragged her into the left-hand hallway. For a moment, Julie was confused, they’re first class was the other way, until she turned around to see Carrie laughing with her back-up dancers.
Julie hadn’t spoken to Carrie since her invitation a couple days ago. It was weird how fast Carrie had gone from hating Julie’s guts to being all buddy buddy again. Julie wanted Carrie’s about face to be genuine. As much as Flynn rolled her eyes when Julie brought it up, Julie did miss their friendship. But she wasn’t going to let go of the year of bullying that easily. Especially when Carrie is conveniently nice once Julie starts getting popular.
“Thanks,” Julie mentioned before continuing their conversation, “We got the Orpheum because the guys did some ghost stuff to make it happen. This is different. We’ll know after tonight.”
“What’s happening tonight?” Caleb appeared by Julie’s side out of nowhere. It had shocked Julie, but Flynn was undeterred.
“Julie and the Phantoms have a meeting with a record exec from Destiny Management tonight,” Flynn announced.
“Really?” Caleb turned his gaze onto Julie. “That’s a pretty big deal.”
“Yeah, I guess,” Julie replied, visibly more nervous.
Caleb could have spotted his opportunity from a mile away. “Hey, you got this. With your band backing you up, I’m sure it will go great.”
“Um, actually they can’t be there. They’re still across the world and wouldn’t be able to make it in time,” Julie lied. Of course, the boys were going to be there. They wouldn’t miss this for the world, but no one else was going to know that.
“Oh,” Caleb’s face dropped perfectly, “You think the company is going to take well to them not showing up?”
Julie’s face paled. It was something that she had even considered. “I mean…I’m sure they will. It’s pretty common knowledge that they aren’t local.”
“Still,” Caleb rebutted, drinking in the girl’s increasing anxiety, “To not even appear over video chat…” Caleb paused long enough for Julie to spiral further before changing tactics. “But I’m sure you will do great! An impeccably talented girl like you has what it takes to go far. Good luck Julie.”
Caleb turned and walked away. He tried to hide his smirk as he heard Julie’s anxiety filled worries behind him. Sometimes, this was just too easy.
“Flynn I'm going to get laughed out of that room,” Julie ranted. “They’re gonna not see the boys and they’re gonna be insulted that the whole band wasn’t there and we’ll be blacklisted and then the band will break up again and-”
“Hey, Julie, look at me,” Flynn gently grabbed Julie’s shoulders, “Breath in…and out.” Julie did as Flynn instructed. “It’s going to be okay, girl. Destiny knew that it was only going to be you when the meeting was set up. If it was gonna be a problem, we would already know. And you are going to kill that meeting!”
Julie closed her eyes while internalizing everything Flynn was saying. “Thanks, Flynn.”
“Anything for my bestie. Now come on, it’s time to be bored to death.”
The two laughed as they continued to class.
Luke, Alex, and Reggie hadn’t been to the Orange Grove in decades. The park had always been a haven for the many struggling artists in LA. Musicians, painters, sculptors, and even a few filmmakers could always be found sharing art and giving feedback. The three and Bobby had played there even before they became Sunset Curve. After they decided to go legit, they moved over to the pier so they could try making money. As they grew, they had less and less time to return to the Grove, but it always held a fond place in their hearts.
The three were thrilled that the place had barely changed. Artists of varying types were still sprawled over, some working independently and others huddled under the trees discussing their works. All that had really changed was the updated technology and the occasional dance move that the boys didn’t recognize.
It took them a while to find her amongst all the people. Perched atop a low hanging branch was Reggie’s mystery girl: Alice. She had traded out her spray cans for a traditional artbook but the clothes and swagger hadn’t changed. Like when Reggie had first seen her, she was busy listening to her walkman, muttering the words:
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died
“Um…Alice?” Reggie gave a small wave in her direction.
Alice looked up to see the same puppy-faced boy from the beach. She rested her headphones around her neck and quickly shoved her artbook into the inside pocket of her jacket before poofing down from the tree.
“Hey! Reggie, right?” Reggie quickly nodded, earning him a stifled laugh from Alex. “These your bandmates?”
“Yeah. Hey, I’m Luke,” Luke said, raising his hand. Alex did likewise when introducing himself.
“So, what brings all of you to my humble stomping grounds?”
“We were-” Alex started.
“We just wanted to come and meet you,” Luke interrupted. Alex was a very direct person. Luke knew that Alex was about to blurt out their suspicions, and he wanted to give Reggie a chance with this girl. So far, she seemed cool. “We haven’t gotten the chance to meet many other ghosts, so we thought we’d tag along.”
“Questions about the afterlife I’m assuming?” Alice asked. By the look on her face, this was a common occurrence.
“Well, actually-” Alex perked up before being interrupted again, this time by Reggie.
“Nope, no questions. Just kinda vibing with the afterlife.” He paused before asking Alice, “Did I use that right?”
Alice ignored him and focused on Alex. “They speak over you often?”
Alex was taken aback. “I wouldn’t say often…”
“You gotta speak for yourself, man,” Alice told him. “Come on. What’s on your mind?”
Alex stood there for a moment, flustered both from the attention and from the question he was about to ask. “Well, I was just wondering, you haven’t seen a ghost named Willie have you?”
Reggie immediately felt bad. He thought that Alex was going to ask Alice about Caleb point blank.
Alice stared off as she thought. “I don’t think so. I could ask around though.”
“Nah. It’s fine. Just figured I’d ask.” Alex quickly brushed it off, but he couldn’t hide his disappointment from his friends.
“So,” Alice continued, “You’re a band right? You guys any good?”
“Good? Dude, we were great!” Luke corrected. “We were top billing at the Orpheum before, well…” He gestured to the three ghosts.
Alice nodded. “That must have been rough. At least you still get to play. Reggie mentioned that your band is still active.”
The three boys stared at each other, mentally discussing what to do. They had agreed to not mention Julie, but they were getting dangerously close to a point where they couldn’t do that without lying. Luckily, they were saved when Alice changed the subject.
“You guys got a demo or something? I could always use new music.”
Reggie’s face lit up. “We can do you one better.” Reggie’s bass poofed into his hands. “You’re own personal Sunset Curve concert!”
Alex and Luke’s instruments poofed into their hands as well. Whether it was for a crowd of thousands or a crowd of one, they never passed up a chance to perform.
While the boys decided what song to sing, Alice looked on curiously. She could have sworn that Reggie had told her a different band name yesterday, and there was clearly something that they were trying to hide. For now, she was going to let it slide. Everyone had their secrets. Besides, they seemed like sweet boys.
Luke turned to Alice with a giant grin plastered over his face. “Alright, we’re ready!”
“I would like the record to show that I was against this song, but I was out voted,” Reggie piped in.
“Come on, man, it’s the one about you.” Luke gently punched Reggie on the shoulder with a wink. Reggie rolled his eyes, but his goofy smile betrayed him.
As the music roared, the three fell into an all familiar rhythm. They hadn’t played just the three of them since that day on the beach right after they discovered they were ghosts, but no one would have been able to tell.
Crooked teeth behind a sideways smile
Can’t disguise those feelings, I know
Tell your friends that your confident
And you play it cool for the show
It wasn’t until the beginning of the chorus that they felt something missing. Normally, Bobby’s would have riffed them into it, but the silence caused them to hiccup in the song for a split second. It was another painful reminder of the friend that they had lost.
Alice bobbed her head to music. She couldn’t deny that they were good. The song felt vaguely familiar, but she could quite put her finger on it.
To Alice’s surprise, she wasn’t the only one who found the song familiar. The lifers around them began to bop to music as well. At first, Alice wrote it off as a coincidence. If Reggie was telling the truth, they shouldn’t have been around long enough to interact with the living. Even if it was just music, it would take most ghosts years to have their presence felt beyond a slight chill in the air or moving furniture. She got her confirmation when a few began to sing along:
Crooked teeth and your rockstar hair
And your classic style and sideways smile
Cover the scars and run from the demons
But I still see where they are
The boys were relishing in their impromptu concert. Even if the lifers could only hear their music and knew the song for all the wrong reasons, it was still a thrill for them to recognize their music. That connection that could only be gotten through the power of song. The every thrill that caused them to create a band in the first place.
As Reggie’s riff completed the song, an echo of cheers and applause rang through the little corner of the grove. The boys took a moment to bask in it before turning to Alice. She was clapping as well.
“You weren’t kidding about being great,” she said.
“I told ya,” Luke said cockilly.
“Hey if you’re ever looking for an audience,” Alice offered, “I help run a hangout spot for ghosts. We do open-mic nights on occasion. You should come check it out.”
The ghosts froze and stared between each other. The chilling, familiar invitation sent them all spiraling into worse case scenarios. Surely, she wasn’t talking about the Hollywood Ghost Club. Even Alex, who often took pride in getting to prove himself right, desperately clung to the hope that she meant something else. It’s why he was the one to speak up.
“What…uh…what’s the name of this hangout?”
“Oh, there’s not really a name for it,” Alice replied, causing all three to relax, “We just pick a run-down building every decade or so and call it home.”
“Oh, phew. I was starting to get a little worried that you worked for Caleb,” Reggie blurted out. Luke smacked his hand over Reggie’s mouth a second too late.
Alice chuckled with no sense of comedy behind it. “I take it you’ve already been introduced to the Ghost Club, then.” The boys nodded. “Look, a little word of advice: don’t trust a word that that snake says. I’ve seen too many good people fall under his charm and lose everything because of it.”
“Oh, believe us. We know,” Luke said.
“Good.” Alice’s smile didn’t fully reach the coldness in her eyes. “The hangout right now is at the Roxie if you ever wanna stop by.” Alice poofed away.
Julie and Ray Molina stepped into the building of Destiny Management with their mouths agape. The lobby was covered with memorabilia of all the greats and most of them were signed. Nearly every name had multiple chart topping hits and platinums under their belt. Their music played softly through the speakers. It was like a mini Music Hall of Fame.
“Woah,” said the ghosts standing behind them. Julie did her best to ignore the three, but she agreed wholeheartedly.
The receptionist gave them a bright, fake smile. “Welcome! Do you have an appointment today?”
“Yeah, I…” Julie tried to answer, but found her words drying up. Despite Flynn's encouragement, Julie hadn’t been able to stop thinking about what “Nick” said earlier, and the intimidating decor was sending her over the edge.
“We have a meeting with Andi Parker at 3:30,” Ray answered. He gave Julie’s shoulder a light squeeze. “Should be under the name Molina.”
The receptionist’s fingers clicked away on the computer. When she found what she was looking for, she handed them two red lanyards that read “Visiting”.
“Ms. Parker’s office is in suite 504 on the 5th floor,” she responded. “The elevator is just down the hall to the left.”
“Thank you,” Ray answered as he guided Julie down the hall.
“You got this, Mariposa,” he whispered as they entered the elevator.
“Yeah, Julie, you got this,” Luke added, placing his hand on her other shoulder. Julie smiled as a familiar warmth flowed through her body. She stilled her shaking hand and walked out of the elevator.
An assistant waited outside of suite 504. After confirming the meeting once again, they shuffled into the office. The Molinas heard whispers on the other side of the door. It took the boys all of their willpower to not poof into the room. They would discover what was being said soon enough.
The assistant stepped back out and held the door for them as they entered. Andi Parker was sitting behind a dark wood desk covered in paperwork and the occasional gift from a grateful client. She smiled warmly and beckoned the Molinas to sit in the cushioned chairs in front of them.
“Julie, it’s great to see you again,” Ms. Parker greeted, “Thank you for agreeing to meet with me.”
“Thank you for inviting me,” Julie responded meekly.
“I’m sure that you are curious as to why that is, so I will cut to the chase.” Ms. Parker straightened her suit jacket before leaning in. “Destiny Management is attempting a new kind of talent drive. A musical competition between promising acts chosen by our talent agents and execs. The winner of the competition will be given the chance to sign with Destiny. I wish to formally invite Julie and the Phantoms to join.”
The boys were cheering behind Julie, and it took all of her willpower not to join them. She put that energy into nodding her head vigorously. “Yes! We would love to.”
“I’m glad to hear it. The first round of the competition is this Friday evening. Each group will perform one original song that they wrote.”
Julie’s face paled. Today was Wednesday. That only gave them a day to prepare. Andi gave a comforting smile. “I know it might seem last minute, but it’s not the worst turnaround that your band has had to do. You had a full set prepared for your show at the Orpheum the same day. Congratulations on that by the way.”
“Thank you,” was all Julie could manage to get out. She shook the record exec’s hand and followed her dad back down to the elevator.
The butterflies in Julie’s stomach exploded into fireworks. The boys excitedly poofed away chatting and discussing what song they should perform at the audition. Julie couldn’t wait until she got back to the studio to join them.
“Oh hey Julie!” A voice called out as Julie stepped off the elevator. A familiar voice that Julie had been avoiding for the past couple days. Carrie Wilson was walking past the reception desk right towards her.
“Hey Carrie,” Julie replied through gritted teeth.
“Well, well, well, what brings you to Destiny Management?” Carrie didn’t wait for a response. “Wait, let me guess: you’re in the competition aren’t you?”
Something sank in Julie’s stomach. “How’d you guess?”
“Oh come on, don’t sell yourself short. We may be competing, but even I’m not surprised you got invited.”
“You’re in the talent drive too?”
“Of course! Dirty Candi had a spot reserved weeks ago.” Carrie’s bubbly demeanor faded slightly as she started choking on her words. “You know, this competition is going to be tough. Destiny Management is only choosing the best of the best. If you rethought my offer-”
“It’s not happenin’ Carrie,” Julie interrupted. Julie suppressed the lump growing in her throat. The Carrie she was talking to was so close yet so far from the one that she called a friend.
Carrie’s face slipped before her cheerful mask was put back in place. “Suite yourself. It was good seeing you Mr. Molina.” Ray gave a curt nod. He hadn’t forgotten what Carrie had done to his precious girl, but he wasn’t about to make a scene with a child in public.
“Good luck, Julie. May the best band win.”

I have a headcanon that Alex is really bad at maths so he keeps making that one joke about drummers can only count to 4.
And he also likes to blame everything he has done wrong/incorrectly on not being able to do maths just to get away with it.
