Reading the Romance of Fan Cultural Production
"This sort of slash critically interrogates conventional understandings of gender and sexuality, with men’s interactions typically depicted as more physically tender and emotionally open than dominant norms around masculinity would dictate"
Regarding Alex and Michael, their relationship is not what is defined as "masculine" even though it's between two men, making it even more ground-breaking. Michael is very aware and in touch with his emotions and men are usually never the ones to be overly emotional in a relationship. Alex is also aware of his emotions and it is clear in the show that they both act on their emotions. Also, I have never seen All my Children but it's definitely interesting that fan videos can create their own story and "spin" on the show through the video. After reading about Bianca and Lena's relationship, I did not really like the way the lesbian couple was portrayed because despite its inclusion, the couple did not really up happily, seeing as Bianca suffered through the trauma of rape.

The Scenic Route RNM
My favorite and an underrated scene was the flashback of Michael, Isobel, and Max in the field. First off, the younger characters are adorable!! It is so telling how much Michael has been through at even such a young age because he’s already pushing people away by refusing to come with Max. This scene shows Max’s huge heart and the steadiness he provided in Michael’s life when he said he would be there everyday waiting. The three of them are an iconic trio and that scene showed the very start of it all.

THE LIMITS OF INFINITE SCROLL: GIFSETS AND FANMIXES AS EVOLVING FAN TRADITIONS LOUISA STEIN / MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE
"For example, these West Wing/Hamilton gifsets layer Hamilton lyrics over West Wing imagery, or West Wing dialogue over Hamilton imagery, cumulatively orchestrating a multimodal conversation between these two fannishly beloved sources that represent American political issues and history."
Being a huge fan of Hamilton, I obviously loved this example provided in the article with the lyrics laid over the pictures. This style makes it so much more dramatic and the lyrics always perfectly match the moment. It really captures what is going on. I also live for the drama and the bold lyrics evoke stronger feelings. I have never seen this style before and I loved it.

Fanfiction Favorites
Because of You
https://archiveofourown.org/works/23854492
This fanfiction states that Max and Liz want to know everything about each other because their lives did not begin until the other came into it when they were younger. Max says his tattoo was a doodle he used to draw in foster care, which was moving to me. It is somewhat forgotten or "slept on" that Max was also in foster care and this fanfiction reminded me of that. It brought attention to the fact that the system messed with him so much. The banter between Max and Isobel about Liz being his crush is amusing. It made me smile and laugh. I liked this fanfiction because it was just a moment in Max and Liz's relationship, not a story telling their relationship from start to end, like the other story I read.
I Always Knew
https://archiveofourown.org/works/23963848
This fanfiction illustrates Max and Liz’s love as unwavering and flawless. They never experience hardships or struggles and stay together dating since they are 12. They plan their lives around each other and Liz is so unbothered by him being an alien. The way they meet when they are 8 at the playground is cute, but it’s strange his first word after being adopted was “Liz.” This fanfiction created a strange and unrealistic relationship. I can tell the author wanted it to be super cute, but I did not think it was.
Malex Missing Scene/Coda Part 2
https://archiveofourown.org/works/18155033/chapters/43202681#workskin
This fanfiction really illustrates the intimacy and love between Michael and Alex. In this fanfiction, Alex really comforts Michael and they talk about their love for each other. There is so much sexual tension described vividly in this fanfiction. I like the added aspect about Alex having nightmares about Michael leaving because he "does not want to look away."

Someone You Loved Michael + Alex
I felt the most emotional during this fan video, which is why it is my favorite. This fan video is arguing that Michael and Alex's relationship is complex, emotionally tolling, and very deep.
The complexity of their relationship is shown because there are so many up and down moments of their relationship that are shown during the video. There is a clip of their intimate hookup in the trailer, yet another clip shows them fighting and stating reasons for why they can not be together. It is clear there are many layers in their relationship.
Their romantic relationship clearly takes a massive emotional toll on the two of them, especially since it involves Alex's dad, Jesse Manes. For example, Jesse Manes smashes Michael's hand after Michael comes to Alex's defense and Alex says he still sees his father in his reflection in the mirror. Their love does not just involve the two of them, it involves Jesse and his opinions too. There are passionate moments of love, and intense moments of pain, hurt, and loneliness in the times when they are not together, or can not be together. Their relationship is shown to be very deep too because the way they feel for each other drives them to crazy places, even violence. For example, at the end of the video, Michael is about to throw a fire extinguisher out the window. The clips of their longing and intense stares, like the looks they give each other at the bar add to the visualization of the depth of their relationship.
The song "Someone You Loved" perfects this video because Alex and Michael did not end up together so the love is in the past. The end of the video is wistful, because right after they say they did love each other, they show a scene of them kissing, emphasizing what could have been. The dialogue gives the video so much more meaning because the lines that were chosen were stinging, powerful, and crucial to understand the history and the love between Michael and Alex.

"Best of Michael Guerin"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7wIU5kMNuQ&list=PL84K8hWIlEzC4qNVFGec4qux8yXlbUgC2&index=28
I loved this video because I obviously love Michael, but it illuminates his humor and the fun side about him. It made me remember all of the moments where he made me laugh, like when he said "You keep showing up here I'm gonna start thinking you like me" and " I accidentally throw furniture with my brain." It also shows his deep love for his family and just his iconic quotes throughout the show. It also showed his bad boy demeanor in some scenes too. I don't like the song "Shape of You" and I do not think it fit the video, but I loved the quotes too much so it was one of my favorites.
"Someone you Loved"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPbQ2YHvnn8&list=PL84K8hWIlEzC4qNVFGec4qux8yXlbUgC2&index=29
I loved this music video because it showed the pain and the depth of Michael and Alex's relationship. The song was very fitting because they did not end up together but they were used to being the one for each other. It showed some of the iconic scenes of their pain and their love and I want them to be together so badly, so it made me tear up. This was one of my three favorites because it made me feel the most.
Max & Liz All This Time
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xg8tO8ENmcY&list=PL84K8hWIlEzC4qNVFGec4qux8yXlbUgC2&index=71
I loved this music video because it shows how Max's love for Liz has been present for "all this time." He has always loved her so much. It showed the ups and downs of their relationships and it brought me back to the early moments of the show. I shipped them so hard and I enjoyed watching their relationship unfold again. The song made it special too and all of the scenes that were chosen were rememberable.

The Crazy One After All
The video was really engaging and touching because it gave the whole narrative of the love story and all of the history between the two men. I liked when the song said "wound" and it was a clip of him looking down at his wound; the words and the clips were clearly deliberately chosen. Reading Fowler's article helped me understand what was going on, but more importantly the deeper meaning and symbolism of some of the clips. Also, I loved the song and am going to add it to one of my playlists lol.

The Crazy One After All (Fowler)
"There are currently 29 episodes of Revolution, so my first task was to load them all into WMM. From there, I created collection files for clips of just Miles, of just Monroe, and of them together. Once that was done I was able to start working on fitting the right pieces to the timeline to work with the words and the timing."
I particularly appreciated this paragraph because it showed how much time and how many steps are needed to create a fan video. It reminded me of how much we learned from Showrunners on what goes on behind the scenes and how much work and planning goes into a tv show. When I was watching the 3 minute video, I was thinking about just how much effort and time it must have taken to create it and it made me appreciate it even more. Not only did the clips have to be gathered, but they had to be converted, and matched exactly to the song, etc., definitely sounds like a hard and long process!

How to Watch a Fan Vid
"Fan music videos adopt a range of different tones"
This section of writing, discussing the tone of "Closer" stood out to me because I only think of writing as having a tone, not videos too. The tone of the video was totally angsty and it was achieved through the screen display of various images, the music choice, etc. instead of adjectives, adverbs, etc. It was cool for me to make that connection. Also, angsty is such an accurate word to describe that video. The music reminded me so much of an angsty boy band. The angsty tone really contributed to the video's rare aesthetic. Jenkin's was exactly correct to call it angsty!

Closer
The orange color scheme of this fan video and the aggressive music amplified the sexual tension to an extreme level. The lyrics were pretty graphic and there was a lot of physical fighting on the screen. The video made me uncomfortable honestly. I thought it was well-done, but for an outsider to the show, I do not understand the aggression, the eerie music, and the sexual tension. The video did a fabulous job catching a feeling because it definitely portrayed strong emotions.

When It All Clicks: Writing about Participatory Media
"Just because you can write about a video, doesn’t mean you should. How vulnerable are your subjects? And in what ways?"
I have always heard that a picture is worth a thousand words and videos can be the exact same way. They can clearly represent what is going on and can be the more appropriate way of media. Clearly you have to think about a lot when you're writing about screen media, such as the text's context itself and the social, economic, etc. context too., and a video can be the better way to show the context.

Politics and the English Language
"But in between these two classes there is a huge dump of worn-out metaphors which have lost all evocative power and are merely used because they save people the trouble of inventing phrases for themselves."
I notice this a lot in writing from past decades and just in conversations with people older than me. I often don't understand the metaphor or what they are referencing. It feels outdated. I never considered it lazy though until I read this essay that a writer fumbles for a "dying metaphor" that doesn't necessarily work or make sense.

Style
"It simply indicates that you are using writing as a way to think—to discover your point. It’s okay to let yourself think on the page and write to discover precisely what you mean."
This sentence resonates with me because I oftentimes use writing as a way to think which leads to wordiness, run-on sentences, awkwardness, etc. I get super carried away with what I am thinking and write it all out at once. I definitely should follow the advice of putting the ideas out on a separate piece of paper, like the free writes we do in class. Then, I can look at my jumbled mess of thoughts and find a clear way to say them.

Editing and Proofreading
"Put the paper aside for a few hours, days, or weeks. Go for a run. Take a trip to the beach. Clear your head of what you’ve written so you can take a fresh look at the paper and see what is really on the page."
I always try to have a perfect first draft, which simply does not exist. I stare at the essay and then begin to question it all as a whole and get so stressed out. I need to learn to step away from my papers and work ahead in some instances so that I am able to take time away from the paper. I think it will make the process overall better. Looking at my writing with a fresh set of eyes usually makes me appreciate it more and it makes me more able to perfect it. Instead of trying to create the perfect essay all at once, I need to do better with working in increments.

Thesis Statements
"Is my thesis statement specific enough? Thesis statements that are too vague often do not have a strong argument. If your thesis contains words like “good” or “successful,” see if you could be more specific: why is something “good”; what specifically makes something “successful”?"
I sometimes struggle with this. It's easy to make broad, generalizing statements without realizing. When thesis statements aren't specific enough, it means you have to define more terms, which is not ideal. I always should be conscious of the words I am using because terms like "bad" and "good" are defined in different ways for almost every person.

What is Academic Writing?
Myth #7: Never use “I” Adopting this formal stance of objectivity implies a distrust (almost fear) of informality and often leads to artificial, puffed-up prose. Although some writing situations will call on you to avoid using “I” (for example, a lab report), much college writing can be done in a middle, semi-formal style where it is ok to use “I.”
I believed that I should never use "I" until I wrote my first paper about why Michael is my favorite character. In high school, I was taught to use 3rd person pronouns. I was doing constant literary analysis and never used "I" because I was taught that it was informal. I am relieved to know that I can write from first person more and still have it be a formal paper. That's definitely going to be a weird but good change for me.
