A Juniper Hairstreak butterfly. They are almost always found near or on junipers in bluffs, open fields, barrens, and dry or rocky open places.
This particular example is Callophrys gryneus gryneus, the ‘olive’ juniper hairstreak.

A Hairstreak Butterfly that I took a photo of at a nature trail in Statesboro Georgia. I am 95% certain it is a Juniper Hairstreak that has had most of the more vibrant green scales on it's wings flake off.

Slashers reaction to a person coming up and touching the reader hair without permission and askin if it’s theirs and the reader going off😌. Cause periodt as they should 💅🏾
I don't think I've ever had someone do that to me, thank goodness. Cause I would probably freeze and not know what my body does next cause it'll def be moving on its own lmao
Slashers react to rude bitches touching readers hair w/o permission:

Hand in hand, You two were taking a stroll around the local park. There had been some new improvements to the area you’d heard about. The city committee finally approved changing the flora landscape, as well as new benches, fountains, and an added kids playground. Random comments from either of you were thrown out as you walked, eventually stopping in front of a particular statue that you were dying to see. Ahead of you was a bronze statue of Rosa Parks, standing tall and proud. It brought a smile to your face.
While you two were admiring the statue, you heard the soft crinkle of your afro before you felt hands invading the side of your hair. The smile on your face went away as you stood, stunned, and fixed your eyes on the person who stood beside you. There was a cream colored hand destroying the shape of your afro - which took you at least 30 minutes to get a perfect shape.
"Oh my gosh, your hair is so soft! It's just like my cat's! Is it real?"
The boldness of this bitch. Your arm moved before you even thought about it, shoving the yt girls arm away from your perfect hair.
"Don't touch my hair, Raggedy Anne!"
Candyman was livid. He wanted to yank her ass away from you and end her life. But, it would be dangerous for him to do that out on the open with you around. He knows the police would jump his butt the second they get there.
The yt woman had the audacity to look offended. Before you could go in on her, Candyman led you away to go elsewhere. You were about to protest until you saw a bee come out of his pocket and fly towards the woman.
All he did was give you a look and said, "She will be dealt with."
Tumblr media
"Wow that looks good. What do you think about this one?"
Michael peered at the cake that you were pointing at. It was a rounded cake with a flat top that gave Michael a view of brown sugar flakes and a criss cross coating of caramel and white chocolate drizzle. The notecard in front was labeled, ‘Jamaican sweet potato pudding cake’.
It was a delicious looking cake. Michael, the sweets connoisseur, was pleased with that choice and whispered to you that he wanted that one.
Both of you were hit with a craving for something sweet, which is why you both were at this bakery. It was rare for Michael to be seen without his mask outside with you (he was always watching from the shadows). However, sweets were involved. So he gets to be near you, potentially protect you, and get a cake out of it too. Win Win.
Michael was standing somewhat behind you. His (planned) placement was the reason why he was fast as hell seeing someone reach out for your hair. All you could hear was the sound of skin slapping behind you before you turned to see Michael gripping the fuck out of some dudes hand.
"Dude, let go!"
Michael said nothing as his grip got tighter.
"Bro, I just wanted to touch her hair to see if it was real!"
Come again? Real?
"Real??! What’s real is that nasty and musty ass hand is about to be fucked up!"
On cue, Michael breaks his wrist and he crumples to the ground, screaming in agony.
"We need to go"
You and Michael move to leave...but not before Michael grabs the cake you both wanted before sprinting out.

"The Juniper Hairstreak, or formally named Callophrys gyneus, is a species of butterfly that can be found in the southeastern parts of the US- Mainly Missouri and Alabama. Belonging to the Lycaenidae Family and the Western Taxa of the genus Mitoura, this species is often taxonomically debated. They perch on red cedar trees, to which their wings (which are originally green) will re light to mimic the color. They do not venture far from their habitat. There is a 2 brood life cycle in which adults only live for 1 week.”
The Cook Museum of Natural Science was a perfect spot to take Asa out for his bday. Although he tries to hide his facial expression, you could tell he was excited to be here. While Asa was reading the excerpt about the Juniper Hairstreak, you wandered a little bit away to view the pinned butterflies. They were all so beautifully preserved, the colors from the wings looked vibrant behind the pane of glass. Like it's beauty was stuck in time for forever. You turned to go look at more butterflies when some random woman popped up beside you. You get to move past, saying excuse me, when the women speaks up.
"Your hair is so beautiful. I've never seen dreads so long, are they real?"
"Why would it be fake? Excuse me, I have to be elsewhere."
" I just wanted to know, they just look so..."
The puny woman reaches out with her visibly dirty hands towards one of the locks near your shoulder. One of the fingers make contact which makes your flesh crawl. This was disgusting.
" No mam, we don't touch anyone without permission"
"But I just wanted to -"
"Know is its real? If it’s real, then it's real in it's consequences. Ever heard that before? Cause touch my hair and see what happens."
You started to move towards the scrawny woman before you felt a soft touch at your side. Asa was standing behind you. Actually he was the whole time, just from a distance. He had watched the whole interaction and stepped in just in time.
He stares at the woman hard. Visibly uncomfortable, the woman leaves quickly.
You turn to say sorry to Asa. But he dismisses the apology.
“No need to say sorry, my dear. Actually, you’ve given me another present to deal with later on. Thank you”

Lets talk habitat interactions and habitat specific co-evolution and mutualism.
This should be a fun one for all you ento nerds out there.
A story about  Cicindelidia rufiventris( eastern red spotted tiger beetle),  Callophrys gryneus (juniper hair streak) ,  Satyrium edwardsii (Edward’s hair streak) ,  Quercus stellata (post oak), Juniperus virginiana (eastern red juniper),  Formica exsectoides (Alleghany mound ant), and tightly associated ecosystem functions.
The barrens of Adam’s county, known for Juniper hairstreaks and Edwards hair streaks, Allegany ants , red bellied tiger beetles and plenty of other unique insects/ bees and wasps... Lets talk about the first four I mentioned though,
Juniper Hairstreaks and Edwards Hairstreaks are significantly less common, habitat restricted species that really only occur in a mixed “oak - juniper” opening habitat; barrens, rocky cliffs, and sandy oak opening locations with both savanna specific oaks and common junipers present. These habitats can be found in many places in the united states but their is one more thing that is restricting these species of hair streaks to a specific range or series of places... and it’s ants.
Specifically Alleghany Mound Building Ants, Formica exsectoides or the other sandier lads in the species F. integra are both notable for a specific coevolutionary connection to the easily prayed upon hairstreaks. Formic acid and a mean bites make these ants pretty good for protection on the oak and juniper feeding caterpillars of these hair streaks. These very same oaks are the ideal habitat for many different predatory and parasitic wasps that would find many a caterpillar perfect for them. Post oak’s are a typical hot spot for taking care of these caterpillars and it is well known that in barrens that have these ant mounds you can probably find one of these two hair streaks larva on either post oaks or juniper trees near by, actually rather easy if you follow the ant trail. Another interesting interaction, rather notable one at that, is that in many cases These ants will protect the caterpillars by moving them to special widened chimneys or byre mounds that access their main mounds at night or late evening to protect them. Older caterpillars and ants can also chemically signal to each other or utilize vibrations to communicate. Eventually the hairstreak in question will pupate, in many cases this may occur in the byre/chimney. After metamorphosis occurs the hairstreak is allowed to leave by the ants. The butteflies will nectar on the barrens Asclepias tuberosa and Liatris spp. commonly enough that you may have a good chance seeing the species.
Now for the ants, these ants actually require the open bare soil for habitat or similar open easily accessed soil in order to survive, they just happened to have formed this coevolutionary mutualism due to the honey dew that is secreted. (you may know about senna, aphids, and ants having similar things occur).
Well what about these Tiger Beetles?
It’s no secret that Tiger Beeltles tend to have habitat preferences, Eastern Red Bellied Tiger Beetle is a fan of loose soils and barren like habitats, we actually see larger populations of these beetles associated with larger ant populations due to cavity and soil aeration caused by these ants. The theory is the tiger beetles tend to actively hunt other ants not affiliated with these mound building ants among other potential predator's to these ants.
The last thing I want to make clear is that these species are mutualistic associating species that formed these behaviors through coevolution in specific habitats; but, are in no way so deeply associated that if one of them goes extinct they all go extinct, Keystone species interaction; instead we would just see an all around population decrease for the closely associated insects.
