Storyline: It has the same setting as my previous post, you and your boyfriend are in a long-distance relationship because you're studying in another country. In this track, your boyfriend pays you a surprise visit. He shows up at the cafe where you usually spend hours working on your assignment. It's been so long since you both saw each other, and you're surprised because he looks more masculine now, like an adult, though he says he's still very childish at heart seeing how he missed his sleep last night simply because he got too excited about seeing you.

On RonToto’s bourgeoning relationship after the Episode 6, the Case of the Live Broadcast Murder

Youhei/Yōhei Azakami: We were in a situation where Toto might have died, and I imagined that I was desperate, and I thought it was the first time that Ron showed human emotions, so I was also impressed. I think it was an episode where you can feel that Ron's feelings for Toto have changed a lot compared to the first episode.

Ron being the culprit again from the three-parter The Murder at the Observatory on a Solitary Island arc:

Azakami: Ron was suspected of being the culprit of a certain incident five years ago, and it's an event that I don't want my character Ron to remember, but even though he is suspected of being the culprit in this case, he is not as depressed as before. It is when he realised that “Toto was not there five years ago.” I still felt that a trusting relationship was being built between the two, and it left an impression on me. It's rare for Ron to put such a thing into words honestly.

EnoJun on Toto’s first impression of Ron and his portrayal of the police detective.

Junya Enoki: Ron is a weirdo who does crazy things, but he has a child-like aspect. I feel like I have an adult side. I really like deduction and it's fun, but I also have a good sense as a proper adult to fight because I hunt down the criminal. … I thought it was very interesting to do it. When I read the original work for the first time, there were a lot of tsukkomi. I got the impression that he is a character who leads comedy, Toto doesn't have much ability as a detective, but he has a great sense of justice, and he doesn't want to hurt the criminal after Ron has solved the case (who pressures them to kill themselves). I felt attracted to his tsukkomi personality.

Akazami on the difference between their characters:

Akazami: Toto is a character that is easy for the audience to empathize with, but the more I read it, the more I felt that the intensity of Ron's personality would stand out… I'm playing it while thinking that I won't make the character darker, on the other hand, Toto is full of feelings.

There is a documentary about Junya Enoki talking about his creative process when recording about his voice acting. This screenshot is allegedly where he said to be doing one of the most painful plots of “Jujutsu Kaisen”: the aftermath of Sukuna’s massacre in Shibuya while his best friend Fushiguro Megumi rendered unconscious, almost to the point of death.

Talk about dedication.

I mean, that scene where his character Itadori shouting at the top of his lungs on episode 10 was so real, you could feel his desperation to reach Nanami Kento, whatever it takes.

Director & Writer: Mari Okada

Mini-review:

I was really curious about this movie, since Mari Okada has written and/or directed some pretty amazing stories, and the promotional materials and trailers looked very interesting. However, I can't say I liked it as much as I expected. I did love how ambitious the film is in terms of concept and themes, and the animation definitely lives up to the Mappa standard. In particular, the final act includes some truly stunning visuals. Unfortunately, I just couldn't connect with these characters, and I didn't find any of them likeable or interesting. Therefore, this movie doesn't even come close to the emotional wallop delivered by the ending of Okada's previous directorial work, the beautiful Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms. So yeah, Maboroshi is well-made, but rather disappointing.
