I don't want Deku vs. Kacchan 3 NOW, bc when they tie (and obviously that's gonna be the outcome) the entire fandom will claim it's bc Deku was exhausted and cry for years about Bakugo favoritism and "if Deku had been alright he would've won" blablabla. Kinda like the final Naruto vs. Sasuke, which ended in an even tie the fandom still can't accept and tries every possible excuse to argue against (especially bc in the end Naruto never won against Sasuke and that makes them very butthurt lol)
anyone who makes these kinds of shallow complaints is entirely missing the point of the Deku vs Kacchan battles, though. it's never been about winning and losing and bragging rights. rather, these are critical moments of change and transition for both characters. moments when the status quo of their relationship is challenged. moments when the two of them are forced to reckon with what they are to one another, and where they stand with one another. and ultimately, moments that spark tremendous growth and change in both characters.
so take Deku vs Kacchan 1, for instance. Deku is the winner here, but this is much, much more than just a physical victory for him. the true victory is in standing his ground against Kacchan and forcing him to acknowledge his strength and finally take him seriously. and even though Kacchan loses this fight, he gains a ton of new perspective as he realizes that for the first time in his life he's actually up against a real challenge, and that his time in U.A. and his path to becoming a hero aren't going to be easy. he takes this loss and turns it into his own personal starting line -- a new beginning. and of course, this occasion also plants the seeds for another profound shift in their relationship, although neither will realize its importance until some time later. "I got my quirk from someone else."
meanwhile, Kacchan is the victor of Deku vs Kacchan 2, but once again it's not the physical outcome which actually matters at all. the true victory in this instance is Kacchan finally triumphing over his own inner demons. this battle is what allows him to finally start moving past all of the little insecurities which have plagued him his entire life. once again it changes his perspective, this time in a way that leads to some truly extraordinary character development. and as for Deku the so-called loser, he winds up gaining a new ally, and a reforged -- if still-tentative -- relationship with his former childhood friend.
and it's that slow rebuilding of their relationship which is ultimately what these fights are truly about. it's not the battles themselves that make these fights so compelling. rather, it's the transitioning of the relationship. the evolution; the growth.
DvK1 -> rivals who respect each other
DvK2 -> rivals who support each other
and then lastly, my deepest hope for the outcome of DvK3, which is -> friends who trust one another.
and so to be perfectly frank, I really do not care if some people decide to let all of this whoosh entirely over their heads and instead focus on some nonsense discourse about who is stronger than whom and who should have won what. that's never been the point. and fandom can and will discourse about anything, no matter what, and trying to appease everyone is a surefire way to wind up pleasing no one lol.
so yeah, let them complain if they want. it doesn't at all change how I feel. the fight needs to happen because Deku needs help. the fight needs to happen because the two of them have been through so much since the last one went down, but neither of them has had the chance to acknowledge how their feelings toward each other have grown and changed. the fight needs to happen because Kacchan needs to let Deku know that he cares. the fight needs to happen because Deku needs to let Kacchan know how scared he was when Kacchan took that blow for him. the fight needs to happen because right now Deku thinks he's alone, and he needs to understand that he isn't. and the fight needs to happen because once again it's time for that status quo to evolve and change. and that's going to be a win for everyone -- both the characters and the readers -- and I for one can't wait.

BNHA 320 - Thoughts
How do you have a fight between people who don’t want to hurt each other?
The answer is to turn it into a giant Catch-a-Deku and shower him with a plus ultra dose of friendship.
Kacchan proves right at the bat that they’ve predicted Deku’s likely course of action. He had a move ready to counter smoke-screen, which does not surprise me at all. I bet he’s been thinking up ways to match / counter Deku’s new quirks as soon as he laid eyes on All Might’s notebook.
Also, all the discussion from last week can be laid to rest on whether Kacchan told the others that he was part of team OFA - he obviously prepared them - they all recognized Smokescreen.
Tumblr media
What is even more interesting is that he calls out Deku (and by implication his younger self) about how once someone is able to do everything alone, everyone else starts to look like extras. That it’s easy to lose perspective. I guess Kacchan is saying that from experience, knowing how screwed up that is.
Deku doesn’t want to hear this, so he bolt.  Then the action is rather cool - we get Kouda sending in a flock of pigeons, a Sero-Midoriya spiderman vs spiderman tug of war, Jirou having a totally new move (let my girl fight, she looks badass),
Tumblr media
Ojirou catching Deku with his tail, Dark Shadow pushing Deku into Momo’s sleep machine. So I guess with was Plan A (probably the Momo-plan). It would also make a pretty cool theme park ride if anyone would ever want to make one.
They are not trying to hurt Deku, only get him in Momo’s sleepy-time machine, which Deku resists like an angry toddler, all the while talking about their bonding moments - Jirou about Deku helping her to organize her notes, Ojirou about how Deku got angry on his behalf.
They all appreciate Deku for just normal friends stuff - nothing to do with Deku’s quirk or his self-sacrifices, but simply his caring, decent nature. For things that are totally unrelated to OFA or breaking himself for the sake of others.
Tumblr media
Satou is going for the jugular mentioning Eri and her candied apples. And it’s so heart-breaking that even at the mention of Eri, Deku thinks that she would be all right with anyone. (Deku, you total dumbass). He also asks his classmates not to care about him anymore (hahahaha) as he breaks the sleep-machine. Love Dark Shadow’s little exasperated look.
Tumblr media
..only to be caught by Kaminari giving him a bro-hug, telling him that even if they never interacted that much, he thinks of Deku as his pal. I adore Kaminari - he doesn’t even use his quirk, he uses his superpower as official whisperer of all the beasts of class A.
Shoji is next in restraining Deku and reminding him back when Deku thought that Shoji, Tokoyami, Shouto, Bakugou and himself were awesome enough to go up against All Might even. I love this reminder, not only how much his classmates also been through and handled, but that back before OFA-Sixquirks, Deku used to see them differently. And it’s not like they’ve become any weaker since then - rather the opposite...
Tumblr media
Tokoyami is back with Ragnarok - Womb that looks like a pretty awesome cocoon - I adore the design and all of Tokoyami’s moves, putting Kaminari in there with him, who finally says the most important thing to Deku.
Tumblr media
Yes. Please. For the love of All Might, go, take a shower, Deku.  Shoji at the same time asking him if he only sees them as people to protect now - and it’s a very pertinent question - hits very hard - it’s something I’ve been asking since the beginning of the arc, and I’m glad someone asked him that. Even if Deku doesn’t think like that, it’s important he understands what it FEELS like to his friends.
Deku breaks out from the cocoon, but finally the mask falls and he’s holding back tears now, gritting his teeth, saying yet again, how he’s fine. Sure Deku, you look “just fine”. I guess it’s another one for the list...
He also notes how Danger Sense didn’t activate this whole time (which the scanlation totally mistranslated btw), because the class has no ill intent. Cue my UA traitor theory.
So as Deku breaks free, he yeets himself head-first into a Heaven Piercing Ice Wall - nice throwback to the first Kamino rescue - and damn, Shouto made it go straight up in an instant, and you can see how high it is.
Tumblr media
But even more devastating is Shouto’s deeply disappointed face, as he questions if Deku can even cry anymore - a nice throwback to their heroes cry too conversation.
Deku’s resolve is really weakening now and Tsuyu still comes to give her two cents - about comic-book heroes and turning fiction into reality, and why does she talk like AFO suddenly.
Interestingly, there is a car approaching - it’s either Hercules or Jeanist Mobile, so we may have an interruption soon. I hope it’s All Might - he should really say something about this lone pillar thing.
Tumblr media
We’ll know in two weeks, but other than some of the big guns in terms of closeness to Deku - Iida, Uraraka and of course, Professor Kacchan, with a PhD in Dekulogy - we still have some of the less significant and mid-tier characters who haven’t spoken: Aoyama, Hagakure, Mina and Kirishima.  I’m guessing the UA traitor will be one of them and may end up pinging Danger Sense.
I guess Iida and Uraraka will be the real heart-breakers, and Kacchan (if we’ll segue now into DvK3) will be the nuclear explosion in the end.
Or maybe Deku gets his bath before that happens.
In any case, so far - I think the “fight” is handled in a balanced way. Nobody tries to hurt the other, the class is showing some new moves, a bit of clever combos, Deku can show off his growth to them, but ultimately it’s a fight for his heart. They are talking to him like to a friend - they are not putting him on All Might’s pedestal, but try to draw out the human side of him and try to get it through to him that he’s appreciated exactly for that.
The class is not approaching Deku, the hero, they try to get through to their dumbass friend who is hurting and is in need of help. They are breaking him with friendship and the no-jutsu has more punch when it’s stuff that’s been built for a long time.
It also shows that the more gut-wrenching moments are the ones with classmates who he has a longer or closer history with. So I’m getting my tissue box ready for 321.
Also, check out the trivia in HK’s author comment about the origin of Deku’s name. It’s pretty cool.
All the dude-bros frothing at the mouth about how Deku didn’t get to beat class A to a pulp makes this chapter extra delicious.

Happy New Year! I think my goal for this year for this blog will be to try to catch up to at least the beginning of the current arc, if not with the manga as a whole. I’ve got 365 days and a bit shy of 300 chapters (not counting those that will go up this year) so… we’ll see! Gotta Plus Ultra everything, right?
(Of course, that doesn’t account for all the chapters I’m likely to break into multiple parts, like this one… alas, I will just simply see how far I can get.)
[No. 9 - Deku vs. Kacchan]
Tumblr media
Starting this chapter off with another western-style comic book cover, with the two coming to blows in costume. Really contrasts when you think of DvK2, which happens out of costume but yet someone comes off as more intense/important to both of them… I wonder what DvK3 will look like?
The chapter itself starts with future Izuku narrating a bit of backstory - that he and Katsuki had grown up in the same neighborhood, so they were childhood friends. He considered Katsuki the fearless type who could do anything, thus becoming the leader of their small gang of friends, and that at the time he wasn’t ‘bad’ or ‘good, just confident, which Izuku admired. However, with Katsuki’s quirk came his slide towards ‘bad’, and the page (and flashback) ends with Izuku echoing the words from the very start of the manga - people are not born equal, a lesson he learned at four.
(As an aside, I really like how the flashback segments are sprinkled through the chapter and slowly add onto the context behind their relationship instead of being shown all at once. It’s better pacing and doesn’t interrupt the flow of the present fight.)
We transition back to the present, with the same moment of Katsuki claiming that Izuku’s defiance even while scared pisses him off as we ended off with in the last chapter. Also, Ochako right behind Katsuki, that was a lost opportunity to attack, even if it wouldn’t have worked. I suppose it was part of Izuku’s plan, but still…
Tenya tries to get Katsuki to give him an update, but Katsuki just tells him to shut up and keep watch while Katsuki wrecks ‘someone’ (cough Izuku). Tenya tries to warn Katsuki to not let emotions get the better of him, only to be frustrated when Katsuki cuts the transceiver, calling him a scoundrel.
Tumblr media
Honestly, this is really fucking hilarious considering a few dozen chapters from now is basically:
Tensei: is injured
Tenya: (✿◉‿◉)🔪
Moving on, we switch back to the viewing room, with Kirishima asking about the lack of sound from the cameras. All Might notes they’re communicating with micro-transceivers given to them along with the blueprints and capture tape - the latter of which is used to provide proof of ‘capture’ when tied around the opponent. Kirishima then goes on to ask/clarify that the heroes only have fifteen minutes but no idea where the weapon is located, which All Might confirms. Mina (finally looking as she should) notes that the heroes are at a disadvantage, and All Might tells them it’s like Aizawa said, and leads them through the school motto - Plus Ultra!
Tumblr media
Honest to god, what support company willingly made this? Why did they not just dumpster it as an affront to God and make something normal??
Anyways, Aoyama is the one to first notice whatever Katsuki is doing, and All Might turns back to the monitors to watch as well. And so we switch back to inside the building, with Katsuki blasting himself at Izuku. Izuku tells Ochako to run ahead while blocking an explosion-boosted kick to the head. Ochako does so despite her obvious worry for Izuku, and Katsuki ignores her entirely, telling Izuku to worry about himself. Katsuki then gets a moment of shock when Izuku turns out to have used the capture tape to catch Katsuki’s leg before he could pull it away.
Tumblr media
Notebook no. 10… we have no idea when he started them, but based on the average time of a notebook being a few months shy of a year, this would likely have been either his last year of elementary or first year of middle school (about age 11/12), so… Izuku has known Eraserhead for quite a while - perhaps in a desperate search for heroes who fought ‘quirkless’ or ‘almost quirkless’? Sadly, I can't make out the text on the page, though I know there’s translations out there that I just have no idea how to locate at the moment… alas.
But yeah, Izuku predicts Katsuki’s next move, and takes advantage of that knowledge to dodge under the next blast without injury. The rest of the class is impressed with Izuku’s ability to go toe-to-toe against the entrance exam’s top scorer without his quirk, while Katsuki keeps getting shocked at Izuku’s moves.
All Might notes that Izuku has always excelled at making split-second decisions, and also his thorough memorization of all the hero-related things he’s been writing in his notebooks - with a short flashback to All Might reading through the notebook while Izuku had been unconscious after being attacked by the Sludge Villain!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Izuku is frustrated, thinking that he had Katsuki, but that one rope wouldn’t be enough to hold him. He thinks about how Toshinori told him he could be a hero, and that with all that support behind him, it was time to show what he was made of.
...and then he immediately bolts around a corner, with Katsuki snapping at Izuku to get back, and then going on to shout about how it ‘must have been fun tricking Katsuki all this time’ and ‘hiding that flashy quirk of his’. Izuku’s expression at that is, according to the discord (because I can’t quite tell myself) frustration, but it might also be a bit of sadness as well?
Tumblr media
Katsuki finishes his complaints / telling with more explosions and shouting how Izuku should ‘bring it on’ and that he’d still crush him. With the class, Kaminari notes how angry Katsuki is and that it’s scary. All Might himself…
Tumblr media
Wow. Why do people in this fandom think Izuku is way too nice and forgiving of Katsuki when we get moments like this?
Fanon Izuku 1: Kacchan has done nothing wrong ever in his entire life
Fanon Izuku 2: Bakugou is a horrible human being who should never have been allowed to be a hero
Canon Izuku: Kacchan is actually a bitch, but damn do I admire his confidence and skill
Tumblr media
Also, we see you there Nerd Might:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We come back to Izuku crouched down by a corner somewhere, panting a bit as he analyses the situation. He notes how Katsuki came right for him and ignored Ochako, and that the smart play for the villain team would have been for Tenya to be the vanguard because of his superior mobility and speed. Since he bets Tenya also knows that, this is probably Katsuki rampaging on his own, so there’s no teamwork happening. We then get a lovely mental image while Izku notes that if both of them had come at the hero team from the start, it would have been really hard to win. He also notes that sticking with Ochako would have likely led to that two on two situation, with him and Ochako wasting too much time on Katsuki, but with them split up, they have a stronger chance since she can go after the weapon and capture Tenya. If he can just follow after her, it’ll be a two on one fight against him, meaning they’ll win!
...so long as Izuku can win against Katsuki. He wipes at the small amount of blood trickling from his nose, telling himself he’ll be fine so long as he watches out for Katsuki’s palms. He thinks back on the past, where he’d told Katsuki he wasn’t trying to compete with him, and says in the present that he takes it all back.
Since the next couple of pages are the flashback portions on Katsuki’s end, I am gonna cut it off here, because those deserve their own post.

BnHA Chapter 320: Deku vs. Class 1-A
Previously on BnHA: Flashback!Kacchan was all “fuck Deku and fuck his stupid goodbye letters, I need to speak to somebody in charge.” Endeavor was all “hello, I am Somebody In Charge.” Kacchan was all “listen up asshole, you need to let us go out and collect our wayward nerd because you stupidly left him alone with All Might and that’s a fast track to disaster right there.” Endeavor was all, “[self-incriminating silence].” Rat Principal was all, “okay sure, have fun kids.” Back in the present, class 1-A was all “hi Deku” and Deku was all “I’M FINE!!!!!” and Kacchan was all “THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT YOU’D SAY YOU DUMB FUCKING NERD” and so the kids all got ready to fight, because OF COURSE they’re gonna fight. Sorry guys, but yeah it’s happening.
Today on BnHA: Kacchan is all “what’s up Deku you look like a possessed Rorschach test, so anyway how are the new quirks coming along.” Deku is all “they’re coming along like THIS” and uses Smokescreen to try and get away. Kacchan is all “PHASE ONE COMMENCE”, and Kouda, Sero, Jirou, and Ojiro leap into the fray to shower Deku with heaps of love and violence, because this is a shounen manga and kicking someone’s ass while simultaneously proclaiming your undying admiration for them is just how it’s done in these parts. The KoudaSeroOJirou squad then passes the baton to Satou, Momo, Tokoyami, Kaminari, and Shouji, who are all “fuck this mask” and do a bunch of stuff to tear Deku’s mask off because they’re the real heroes. Shouto is all “LOOK AT THE LITTLE CRYBABY, THAT’S RIGHT, GO AHEAD AND FUCKING CRY and by the way let us share your burden please,” and once again I swear this is all very deeply moving and touching within the actual context. The chapter ends with Tsuyu being all “look at me. I’m the cliffhanger now,” and damn.
lol what
Tumblr media
I don’t think anyone was expecting that. I mean, not that I’ve got anything against Tsuyu or anything. anyways it’s a very nice cover and I love the colors and I hope this means Tsuyu’s gonna do something badass
also, “Deku vs Class A” -- pretty much the expected title, but it’s still got me hyped nonetheless fuck yeah let’s go
IIDA ANGST
Tumblr media
Iida Tenya really said “fuck the uniform code, we’re leaving the helmet at home today.” sorry kids, prim and proper C-3PO Comic Relief Iida has left the building. can I interest you in some Serious Iida
meanwhile Kacchan is all “sup Deku, I heard you got a few more quirks, and might I just add that you look like the Snyder Cut of Detective Pikachu”
Tumblr media
“you look like a tarred and feathered squid” okay easy there Kacchan. I mean it’s all true of course, but still
“thank you all for coming” OH EXCUSE ME SON, WERE YOU PLANNING ON GOING SOMEWHERE. LET’S JUST SEE HOW THAT PLAYS OUT
yep and there’s Smokescreen, right on cue
Tumblr media
okay Horikoshi, I leave it in your hands. hopefully you can come up with some more interesting combos than my dumbass predictions lol
LOL THIS ISN’T A COMBO AT ALL
Tumblr media
“explosions solve everything” -- Horikoshi Kouhei, 2021. something something shockwave, something something handwave ta-da no more smoke. lol okay then
oh, ouch
Tumblr media
he would know, wouldn’t he. nice application of one of your many hard-earned life lessons, Kacchan
by the way you guys, just as an experiment, I’m going to try to anticipate some of the discourse this week in the hopes of preemptively addressing it and thus saving myself some time later on lol. so here’s our first test run!
ANTICIPATED DISCOURSE: “oh my god what a fucking hypocrite can you believe this fucking guy”
PREEMPTIVE REBUTTAL: it’s precisely because Kacchan has been in this exact situation himself that he’s able to recognize his past self in Deku now and call him out on it. just because it took him sixteen years to get it through his head that he can’t accomplish every single thing completely by himself doesn’t mean Deku has to go down that same path. so yeah, maybe it is a bit hypocritical, but if you insist that the only people qualified to call out stupid shit are people who have never done a single stupid thing in their own lives, then what you’re basically saying is that absolutely no one on earth is qualified lol. so yeah, I’d have to disagree
and one last unrelated note, I’m willing to bet the whole “you didn’t even say a word before you ran off” thing is possibly the first thing Kacchan’s said in this whole encounter that actually does stem from genuine hurt rather than his tough-love-harsh-truths strategy. I’M TAKING NOTES HERE HORIKOSHI. at this rate it’ll take twice as many chapters as DvK2 for them to hash out all the stuff between them, geez
anyway so I gotta say, so far Deku vs. Class A is looking an awful lot like a DvK3 wearing a hat, trenchcoat, and sunglasses lol
OH SHIT I TAKE IT BACK??
Tumblr media
FUCK YEAH, YOU GO KOUDA. and I guess he ditched his mask as well! excellent
so far the strategy here seems to be “Kacchan says all the mean tough love shit while the rest of 1-A balances it out with warmth and kindness”, which actually works pretty well imo. Deku is one of those people that doesn’t usually need a Kacchan Translator anyway, but just in case, this is very efficient
mm but of course Deku is slingshotting himself away with Blackwhip. all right then, who’s up next!
FUCK YEAH
Tumblr media
okay but seriously you guys, what is going on with Sero’s face in these last couple of chapters though, it’s really starting to unnerve me. is he trying to emulate Kacchan’s whole asymmetrical facial expressions thing?
in fact let me just quickly hit pause here because,
ANTICIPATED DISCOURSE: “SERO IS TOGA??!”
PREEMPTIVE REBUTTAL: no
oh snap looks like Jirous getting in on the action too!
Tumblr media
poor Jirou probably spent days racking her brain trying to think of something she could bond with Deku over. is Horikoshi doing these in reverse order of the kids who have had the most interaction with him? that would explain why poor Kouda didn’t get a flashback lol
omg. well that answers that
Tumblr media
so by my count, Satou and Hagakure are the only ones remaining in this first tier of kids who Still Appreciate Midoriya even though they’ve barely ever spoken two words to him in their lives lol. so they’ll probably be next, and then we’ll get to the next tier of kids who are pretty good friends with him but not quite besties. and then we’ll move on to the IidaRokiRaka trio, and then lastly, to the boy who is in a tier all his own
BUT FIRST, A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR
Tumblr media
and by “sponsor” I mean the Dekuangst. just in case that wasn’t clear. indeed, many thanks to the Dekuangst for making this all possible
(ETA: okay so this whole “take me away” line seemed pretty weird to me, and sure enough it’s yet another one of those cases where only the verb is specified, and the object is left to the reader’s interpretation. so even though the translation says “take me away”, I’m pretty sure that what Deku’s actually saying is “take you away” -- as in, his loved ones will be taken away by AFO.
and that is literally the way he phrases it, though -- the verb used is “奪う” (ubau), meaning “to snatch away; to dispossess; to steal.” which, god, that hurts my whole goddamn heart though, because for him to say it like that?? not “AFO will kill you”, but “AFO will take you away from me.” he can’t have nice things anymore because of AFO. he can’t be around the people he loves because AFO will hurt them. he can’t have happiness because AFO will take it away from him. anyway so where the fuck is AFO right now, motherfucker I just want to talk.)
by the way can Ojiro just extend his tail to whatever fucking length he wants or what because it’s like twelve feet long in this panel lol
WOOO FUCK YEAH TOKOYAMI
Tumblr media Tumblr media
YOU LOVE TO SEE IT!! BUT WHERE’S YOUR FLASHBACK? YOU’VE HAD A BUNCH OF INTERACTIONS WITH HIM, THAT’S NOT FAIR
okay so now Satou’s stepping in which is back to my anticipated order, so maybe Toko will finish his little moment afterward
dskfjfkk
Tumblr media
“REMEMBER THAT TIME DEKU BORROWED SATOU’S FOOD COLORING” Horikoshi says, sweating. “AND REMEMBER THAT TIME HE, UM, SMILED IN HAGAKURE’S GENERAL DIRECTION”
actually I am curious about what Hagakure’s part will be because, you know, the whole traitor thing lol
(ETA: funny how we just skipped right over it huh. can we get a traitor reveal countdown started here? definitely getting close to that time.)
whoa lol wtf
Tumblr media
MOMO??? THIS HAS MOMO WRITTEN ALL OVER IT DAMMIT
-- SWEET MOTHER OF FUCK
Tumblr media
“SORRY MIDORIYA-SAN, I LEFT MY FUCKING CHILL AT HOME IN THE LOCKER NEXT TO IIDA’S HELMET” holy shit lmao
and here I thought she’d get a flashback to her time on the Baku Rescue Squad or something. but nope, no flashbacks from Momo, only terrifying sci-fi torture devices
poor Dark Shadow is such a trooper omg
Tumblr media
“why am I the only one who has to make prolonged contact with his smelly disgusting self” taking one for the team there DS
FUCK YEAH KAMINARI NO JUTSU
Tumblr media
THE PRICKLY BASTARD WHISPERER STRIKES AGAIN!! don’t suppose you brought any clean clothes you could sneakily force him into huh Kami
okay here we go, so now Shouji and Tokoyami are joining forces
um excuse me this is fucking awesome
Tumblr media
wonder how he’ll break free? don’t think he’ll reveal Fa Jin until the end of the chapter, so maybe Air Force or something? idk
TOKO GETS AN EXTENDED MOMENT BECAUSE HE IS A TIER TWO PATREON REWARD LEVEL FRIEND YAY
Tumblr media
WHY IS MOMO MAKING THIS FACE LOL YOUR THING WAS WAY WORSE
Tumblr media
and Shouji just casually hitting him with what is easily the best comment from anyone yet. too bad Deku’s just gonna ignore it. you deserve better Shouji
KAMINARI OMFG
Tumblr media
it only just occurred to me that Kami is currently trapped inside Dark Shadow right along with him lmao omg. realest one in the entirety of BnHA, right here. we will never forget your sacrifice
aaaaaaand Deku’s yeeting himself
Tumblr media
do you really hate the thought of taking a bath that much my dude
oh shit the mask!!
-- oh shit the feels
Tumblr media
o(TヘTo)
fuck. and I mean, we knew he was crying, that was a done deal. but still, to see him in this much pain is just...
and the acknowledgement that he knows they’re worried about him, but that it doesn’t change his mind one bit. this, right here, is why they have to be a bit harsh with him, you guys. because they’re up against the full, unbridled stubbornness of Midoriya fucking Izuku, and if they don’t match that stubbornness with an equal stubbornness of their own, they basically don’t stand a chance
(ETA: quick note that there is apparently another mistranslation here -- rather than saying that his friends are oblivious to the danger, what Deku is actually saying is that none of his friends have activated his Danger Sense once throughout this entire fight. which I had been wondering about, and it turns out Horikoshi actually confirmed it. so basically none of the kids bears any ill intent toward him, and there’s literal proof right there.
incidentally, as @class1akids pointed out, this also casts an interesting light on this chapter in terms of who hasn’t fought Deku yet. not to play the Hagakure Traitor Music for the billionth time you guys, but I’M JUST SAYING lol.)
anyway, but the good news is that they all seem to understand that. and the even better news is that we have reached the tier 3 friends!!
Tumblr media
“OR ELSE” lol, great to see Shouto wielding his friendship just as aggressively as Deku once did towards him. I do love a good role reversal
p.s., ANTICIPATED DISCOURSE: “why is Shouto being so cruel to Deku can’t he see how hard this is on him”
PREEMPTIVE REBUTTAL: this is a callback to the classic “even heroes cry when they have to” Shouto line from chapter 137. Shouto is clearly following Kacchan’s lead here and going for the more ruthless approach, knowing that the gentle approach isn’t getting through to him (if anything it’s only making him more stubborn as we saw on the previous page). basically it’s his way of pointing out that even heroes are still only human, and so is Deku last time he checked
ah okay, and there Tsuyu is at last
Tumblr media
okay real talk, I get why Tsuyu is included in the tier 3 friends, because she was one of the first people to team up with Deku going all the way back to USJ. but that said, this probably would have had more impact if their most recent interaction hadn’t been like 150 chapters ago
but anyway though it’s still a good speech. maybe not quite a cliffhanger-level speech, but a good speech nonetheless. in a way though, I’m glad to see that Horikoshi seemingly didn’t give a fuck whether he ended this on an actual cliffhanger or not for once
and that “headed toward the climax” part has me excited too, ngl. because if we really are getting to the so-called climax this soon, that makes me even more certain that there is indeed a DvK3 in the forecast. so I presume that next week (or I guess two weeks from now) will be the tier 3s along with the remaining tier 2s like Kirishima and Aoyama
and then after that, well... [orange and green banners being hoisted] [sound of screeching airhorns and vuvuzelas in the distance] [sound of All Might approaching in his car which I didn’t notice until I looked back at this page a second time whoops] THE PROPHECY WILL NOT BE DENIED

Some more thoughts about the Kamino parallels...
So while I expected a Kacchan-Deku reunion, them being it in Kamino was a surprise and it has put into context a lot of things that happened in this arc.
1. They both start out as targets - in the Forest arc everyone knew Kacchan was the target, while during the war arc it became clear that Deku was one.
2. They both have their own protection squad - with which they don’t cooperate too well.
3. They both are villainized - Bakugou for his misunderstood-as violent behavior, Deku for his appearance and multiple quirks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. They both end up in Kamino - Bakugou facing a group of villains, with no hope to win - Deku facing a group of civilians, with no hope to save
5. A group of friends comes for both of them at the moment everything is lost (for now Kacchan is alone, but the cliffhanger let us know there are others with him).
So all these parallels make me think that there may have been a scene between Kacchan and Deku in the hospital - one where Deku pushed Kacchan away, with the parallel of:
Tumblr media
7. Also, I think we may get some insights on how the current rescue team formed. Maybe it started with Todoroki and Bakugou. Maybe with Ochako, Todoroki and Iida to parallel this scene.
Tumblr media
My top candidates are:
Shouto - there is no good illegal outing without Shouto. Also he called Endeavor, so maybe he wanted to give him the heads-up.
Iida - ditto serial rule breaker. Class prez and Midoriya-friend. He’s character arc is about realizing doing the right thing often requires breaking the rules.
Ochako - she chose not to go last time, because she was considering how Bakugou would feel. I think though she has since grown a lot in the let’s save people department
Froppy - she was one of the most vocal against it last time, thinking how breaking the rules would make them like villains. Hori hasn’t developed her in forever, but this is a good opportunity to show how her thinking evolved.
Kirishima - he was on the first Kamino crew, would 100% go with Bakugou anywhere, and it was mentioned that the first time around Dictator was arrested by Crust. Kirishima could make his appearance as the “new Crust”.
8. Holy hell - can you imagine all these kids, especially Deku and Bakugou to come back to Kamino and see this for the first time:
Tumblr media
Talk about BRUTAL
9. So while I think Bakugou and Deku may have had a moment in the hospital (or in the letter) Deku pushing Kacchan away - they haven’t had the DvK3 TALK yet. I don’t think we’ll get a fight with how beat up and exhausted Deku is, unless the Dictator gets a hold of one of them (most likely Deku then) in which case people may get their much desired Deku vs Class 2A.
But I think we are approaching the Talk, just how DvK3 followed the Kamino rescue (with a 20-chapter gap)
10. Wanna see how my boy, Shouto will fit into this. I’d love to see the flashback of the OFA-reveal for him - it must have been held back for a reason. Also, as third Origin / All Might-legacy character, it’s time to somehow insert him in the narrative. I’m thinking about how last time Dabi had a key role in Kamino by kidnapping Bakugou, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that plot-thread intersected again, and Dabi would make a move here - using the confusion.
Chapters like this is why I read BNHA!

BNHA 286 - Thoughts
I was still riding the high of Bakugou’s spectacular character development, so the drop from this chapter was a really, really bad one.  The sheer helpless frustration, worry and anger in this panel accurately sums up my mood after reading it:
Tumblr media
The same, Shouto, the same.
The deja-vu was strong, because here we are again, Deku with two broken arms, staring helplessly as Kacchan tumbles out of his reach (like even the eye shut swollen matches...)
Tumblr media
Not before Bakugou voices the frustration I’ve been feeling ever since Deku entered rage-mode a while back.
Tumblr media
And to think that the day would come when Bakugou gets to lecture Deku on teamwork with absolute cause, punctuating the sentiment with some splattering of blood.  Because really, I was so so so hoping for some Origin Trio teamwork, but it looks like I’m not going to get any, and that makes me a sad, disappointed bunny.
At least this time Todoroki wins a round of catch-a-Kacchan, displaying also some serious one-foot-rocket-game there. If Horikoshi was trying to make the catch as ship-unfriendly as he could, he severely underestimated the audacity of TDBK fandom, because what’s better than a princess carry? Diving straight for your boyfriend’s pants, while you are lugging your unconscious trash dad around. It’s kind of perfect. That’s my OTP. (SQUEEE)
Tumblr media
What’s not cool is that Bakugou’s sacrifice seemingly achieves nothing, because Todoroki for lack of hands can’t drag Deku away, and he falls for Shigaraki’s taunting, entering Rage+++++ mode.
It seems that Deku’s weakness is Kacchan (duh, we all knew that) (and my theory is that because of Search, AFO/Shiggy also knew that), but his even bigger weakness is people dragging Kacchan. So yeah, this was the part I didn’t like at all, because protagonist rage-power is just the biggest cliché ever, and nothing to glorify. There is even a flashback to Banjo warning Deku about the need to control his heart. So I suppose Rage+++!!!Deku is not a good thing says Horikoshi, who then proceeds to glorify Rage++++!!!Deku with lots of pretty art.
Tumblr media
So sad, he’s crying...
Still I hope that this taunt is just Horikoshi trolling us and Bakugou’s sacrifice will eventually serve a much bigger narrative purpose than just rage-upgrading Deku (considering it meant preventing again Todoroki from entering the fight, grrrrr, I’m getting impatient, I want to see him do something other than first aid and designated ice-pack...), but I’m fully resigned to the fact that it may just happen in the terms of some talk (or a DvK3, ok, that would be kind of epic) where Kacchan reads Deku the riot act about his reckless behaviour. (For the Haikyuu!! fans out there, I’m partial to the kind of vibe where Iwa headbutts Oikawa and tells him that the team with the six strongest players is the strongest).
Shiggy and Deku are in full monster-mode and it looks kind of creepy-stunning, with Deku looking like Dark Shadow and we see the literal AFO grinning in the (physical or spiritual?) split in Shiggy’s face as he regrows his fluffy white hair amidst the happy screams of the Tomura-stans corner of the fandom through the miracle of regeneration.
Tumblr media
Deku’s rage seems to lead to careless opening as he’s finally checkmated by Shigaraki’s hands on his face, ready to steal OFA. And look, poor Todoroki can’t do anything but helplessly stare (and ponder whether if he drops his trash dad, he could maybe grab his other boyfriend???).
Tumblr media
The attempt to steal OFA leads into what looks like the MMA fighting ring of the Vestige plane. In one corner, we have Coach AFO hyping Shigaraki (who thanks very much does not want AFO to be there, because now he’s a big boy and has his OWN dreams which kind of look like AFO’s dreams...).
Tumblr media
And their bickering may be Deku’s saving grace in the end, which would make indirectly Bakugou’s plan / Endeavor’s big prominence burn be decisive in the fight as the step to create the opening for AFO to enter Shigaraki’s mind.
In the opposite corner, we have Nana hyping Deku.
Tumblr media
So if the vestiges were always gonna interfere, Deku could have just walked up to Shigaraki, skipping straight to this bit, saving a whole lot of bloodshed????
Anyways, it looks like either it’s gonna be Nana vs AFO Round 2, or Deku vs Shiggy where they are backed by their respective guardian spirits or perhaps all four of them? Nana’s physical hand (the one corresponding to what she places on Deku’s head) is still in Shigaraki’s literal pockets. Talk about awkward family reunions...
I hope that whatever happening in the spirit world, the fight will also continue on the ground. There is some chance of that, as it seems team Iida is on its way towards Deku’s location, bringing news of Machia.
Tumblr media
So we may see this group (at least Iida, Neijire and Uraraka as they seem to have different action-lines than the other three) + Todoroki take on Machia / LoV. It could also mean getting Bakugou some essential medical help faster - if the injury is too much for Todoroki’s nine pee-pees - (though I was really hoping to see more of Bakugou fight, because he’s always a joy to watch). Obviously, I’m hyped for more class1a, but also hoping that Neijire finally gets the action she was denied in the Overhaul arc.
Another interesting detail was Machia sensing two masters. The obvious answer is him sensing Shigaraki and AFO (and good question which one will he listen to), but a twist could be him sensing Deku in there with Shiggy?
If you need emotional comfort, I highly recommend checking out this gorgeous full-color version of 285.

What do you think the next arc after my hospital academia, will be about? I am really excited about horikoshi wrapping up the aftermath of the war arc, but, I want to see the kids (they are going into their second year now) and how u.a. Is now impacted by the aftermath of the war arc.
I have a very hard time imagining them going back to school. It feels like with AFO just waiting for Tomura’s body to heal we’d be heading into endgame very soon - unless we get the people loyal to Tomura do something that slows down this process, which honestly would be a really cool thing.
So I kind of expect an on-the-job last training arc - with the students all participating in haunting down escaped villains and getting to show their skills and getting their moments of character development. Maybe the Origin Trio and especially Deku getting some intensive training with the top heroes to get him ready to face Shigaraki.
But I guess we should get some mini-arcs in this:
- Investigation into Touya’s backstory and whatever rabbit hole that leads to and maybe a Touya retriaval mission
- UA Traitor - with the outside world asking questions about OFA it is the perfect time to have this come into play
- Investigation into 2nd and 3rd OFA users - somehow I feel this will be Bakugou-centric, time-travel or not
- DvK3 - which honestly, I just expect to be a really emotional talk and not so much a fight
So it feels like there is a lot of ground to cover, but unless they can somehow catch Shigaraki, and stabilize the situation, it’s really hard to see the space for a proper timeskip.
But also, it’s kind of weird to think that Deku would have his big Avatar State fight / “I’m here” moment and then go back to school to graduate...
So yeah, I’m a bit stuck with trying to predict how this will play out.

It would be interesting in a dvk3 fight is D is focused on winning to prove he has to do this on his own and push Bakugou away than maybe it would be better if he doesn't "win" be it by break down, collapse from exhaustion or does lose again by Technique to show that he is not enough. K "won" the last fight and the win broke his world view but I can't see the same working with D for the same reason it worked for K - D has such immense power but it shouldn't be enough to win. (DvClass2A? maybe)
I'm not sure if the tone of DvK3 should be proving that "Deku is not enough" or putting him in his place any way.
Knock some sense into him? Yes. Dragging him off the pedestal? Sure. But it should be about lifting each other up, just like DvK2 served the purpose of starting to rebuild Kacchan from the rock bottom.
But I think the talking part itself should have one/more of the following themes:
1. Getting into Deku's head that his worth is not tied to OFA, that OFA didn't make him a hero - he was always one.
2. Telling him that maybe he could do it alone, but he doesn't have to do it alone - it's a burden for all of them to share. And maybe Deku trying to push Kacchan away and him just staying anyway (sort of reverse of how Deku kept following Kacchan when they were kids).
3. Telling him that as much as he wants to protect everyone, they are all heroes and they want to protect Deku too.
4. That even the strongest heroes need help and it’s not a weakness to accept it. Just like Bakugou shouldn’t have felt threatened that day at the river.
5. That the only acceptable option is a perfect victory with no casualties - and that includes Deku.
I'm not keen at all on DvClass2A. I simply can't wrap my head around it what purpose it could possibly serve for Deku to blitz the whole class.
