it's official. em jay having feelings for gwen is canon. it's no longer coding. it's no longer subtext. it's stated.

it only took ten years but we're finally here. and on valentine's day!

and depending on how gwen gets ousted from 65 it might even be em jay's big lesbian crush on her that drives her away. god. dammit.

em jay's anger at gwen finally being confirmed to be partially based on her feelings not being returned. em jay's longstanding sapphic crush on gwen slowly turning toxic and consumptive the more she stews in it. em jay watching gwen and dazzler get close and getting jealous. i love it.

glory both demanding that gwen and em jay sort their shit out and getting to stand her ground about being mad that she's getting third wheeled. like YES. glory's whole hangup about getting together with em was anxiety that em's only using her as a placeholder for gwen so thank GOD we're calling that shit out. if we have to go the route of 'yes, em DOES have feelings for gwen that are interfering with her relationship with glory', glory can't just smile through it. LOVE that a writer both knows about glojay and cares about it. can't describe how much the gwenjay shippers who ignore glory piss me off.

it's a definite departure from mcguire glory's 'cracking jokes about em and betty fucking in the green room/chill about gwen and em having pda right in front of her' but if exclusivity IS going to be a part of the glojay dynamic, at least em's being called out

gwen chasing after em in a classic damsel in distress story that we finally get to admit is romantic and not just galpalling. love that.

em's feelings for gwen reawakening her symbiote. love that. perfect revival of how em got carnage'd in the mcguire run.

bruce banner's obsession with dazzler and em jay's with gwen being paralleled. hulk and carnage, both giant rage monsters triggered into rampages by unrequited feelings for someone. love it. what a great new take on the hulk.

the queer gwen fans won. if you like lesbian gwen, you won. if you like bi gwen, you won. if you like ace gwen, you won.

speaking of ace gwen, idk if gwen's obliviousness to em's feelings are indicative of her not reciprocating or of her being so repressed that she doesn't realize she does, but this is an interesting shift from the mcguire run-- where it definitely feels like gwen has caught on that em has feelings for her. still works i guess given that they couldn't say it and gwen spent basically a year bouncing from dimension to dimension.

i like that now that we're going there with gwenjay, they're not trying to make it a ~i was in love with you from the start~ thing like a lot of the shippers want. like, go read the latour run. gwen definitely wasn't. thank you for keeping continuity.

and thank you for not letting em off the hook for the years of shitty treatment she's been throwing at gwen. yes, she's pining but she's also been mean, demanding and unsympathetic towards gwen for ~4 publication years. if gwen instantly melted into em's arms and they were all flowers and sunshine about it, without acknowledging all the bad blood, the relationship would just have a toxic vibe and there'd be a real shitty double standard at play where male character's possessiveness of gwen is condemned while em's is rewarded. we don't need diet new 52 harley/ivy. new 52 harley/ivy is already exhausting enough.

.... that being said. in light of the gwiles-shaped axe about to drop on gwen's neck and the years of resistance to letting gwen be explicitly queer... it's still interesting that gwen is apart from the janes in terms of who gets to be queer on-page. glory and em are a couple. em gets to pine after gwen. gwen... doesn't respond. i have to wonder if the compromise that finally got onesided gwenjay over the hump into canon was: fine, em can have feelings for gwen, but gwen can't return them.

because the thing is, it's still not canon that gwen's queer. the subtext and coding's off the charts, and a girl being attracted to gwen is canon, but gwen still hasn't explicitly shown attraction to another woman or said "i'm ace."

..... and now another of gwen's friends has turned into a supervillain after showing romantic interest in her that she doesn't appear to reciprocate. man what a depressing theme. i'm into it.

part of me hopes em will come back to earth like harry did. part of me's staring at the upcoming ~stuck in 616 for good~ ongoing thinking, oh she won't.

... did they finally let the gwenjay vibe become canon because they plan on never using em-65 or any of gwen's supporting cast again after giant-size?

i guess we'll see.

but hey, still a big win. we're another big step closer to canon queer gwen. that's bigger than any one ship.

The worst and also best thing about the chaos throuple is the sheer amount of content. Things that would be key foundations of the lore in any normal ship are just side notes in the firehose of insanity that is breakfast for three.

right. this is the thing about mando and now mandinha. foundational moments like, oh, I don't know, when max called lando daddy on stream? that's just a thing, that wasn't even a thing, they're so much more deranged than that now! like imagine if any other rpf ship was even half this. people have ships based on drivers like, standing near each other and then there's max just going like "oh of course we kiss, with tongues."

Mei prefers to be around LOA, who is canonically, the quietest of the Spell-cleaver clan.

Mei isn't outdoorsy so while Alexander is trying to lure her outside to the garden, she's perfectly content INSIDE thank you very much.

LOA is actually very smart in a non-bragging sort of way. Mei likes to play chess with her. LOA is quite cunning and it takes Mei a long time to almost best the Lady of Day Court

She finds she likes the Nessian child best of the extended cousins. Galpal makes a beeline for the library every time she comes over, and Mei also likes a good, smutty book. They become penpals, gushing over their favorite storys (NO ONE TELL HELION)

Day Court is just really, really boisterous and loud. Compared to Dawn which is quieter, it takes her a long time to get used to.

She's got her own workshop off the main halls she likes to retreat to. She isn't the only one. Ivy can also be found sitting on the floor with her feet in front of the door to keep anyone from coming in.

It's a nice little companionship between them. Ivy vents about the endless drama between courtiers which Mei enjoys (from a distance) and Mei talks to Ivy about what she's working on.

And of course, Soren, who LOVES to get into trouble, has created an oasis of quiet calm in their bedroom. Dark shades that block out the light and cool air makes it easy for Mei to escape to someone dark and quiet whenever the loud overwhelms her. She asks him once if the lack of Day light bothers him and Soren reminds her that he is part Vanserra, after all. A little gloom won't hurt him.

He keeps an eye on the dinner table and if things are getting rowdy, he's the first to tell everyone to shut the fuck up. Soren has learned all her little tells- when she seems as if she's exhausted from interacting, he makes their excuses without having to be asked.

I find it interesting that there’s a Kangaskhan + Nido-line couple in both this comic and Woo’s “On Borrowed Time.” Since you two are friends, did you guys do this on purpose, or did you come up with the couples independently? Which of the couples came first?

it was a complete accident, but i think i kind of had something to do with BOTH couples LMAO. i decided on caroline's old partner as a device for an extra story i've kicked around for ages that i still haven't fully written (like so many other projects </3), and it was little more than set dressing. but i love huge monsters. i love the bipedal beast pokemon that resemble godzilla in more than a few ways, so it was really easy for my brain to pair them together. i know for a fact mine came first, but i didn't physically publish anything about it until this askblog was up for several years and inigo was already on screen, so i can't prove it to you, you'll just have to believe me <3. on woo's end, she did recruit a nidorina who she had decided to use as a main cast member, and naturally his mom would be in the nido line. but another fun factoid is that while she cameos matt from THIS comic as a shopkeep THERE, she was also going to use caroline for the storage facility. this didn't end up coming to pass and she just made the kangaskhan into her own character. so i mean, this could've happened without my intervention, but i like to think i had something to do with it. i've had my fingers in many pies by inspiring or just directly writing other things in on borrowed time, though.

my headcanon about jace and his actually not all that straight sexuality.

try to imagine just for a moment, growing up bisexual in a strict, conservative, there are only two sexuality types, wrong and right, very small society. TRY to imagine not even knowing there are words SUCH as bisexual until you first hear it well into your late teen years, and you’re still not sure what it means. TRY to imagine never knowing such a word, or such a sexuality was ever ANY kind of a VALID option. try to imagine growing up with a mentally, emotionally and physically abusive father who thinks being anything but straight is a sick way to be. try to imagine growing up also thinking you’re cursed to ruin and kill anyone who might love you and you might love back. and then try to imagine having the ONE person who means EVERYTHING to you, who makes you feel PROTECTED, who you want to be your warrior soulmate (because that’s the ONLY FOOLPROF way you can think of, to create a bond with them that no one in the world could take away from you), AND realize as you grow up that that person is in love with you. try to imagine if that knowledge of your inner curse hanging over their head, would give you any reason at all to try and investigate, look into, or dismantle the  one safety blanket you have, that you are straight, and therefore you can’t be anything else, and you can’t POSSIBLY reciprocate - which means you are OKAY, and he is OKAY, because you liking girls and only girls, makes you SAFE. not only that, but you feel so much guilt already towards the experience he has NO CHOICE but to go through, as opposite to you, that even ENTERTAINING such IDEAS makes you feel CRUEL and SELFISH.

TRY to imagine growing up being taught that certain or most things that apply to downworlders are not applicable to your kind, or mundanes, and therefore even if you ever saw, earlier in your life, someone enjoy more than one gender, you automatically thought to yourself, oh that must be a downworld exclusive thing - because you’ve never even heard of something remotely similar around your own people. TRY to imagine growing up without having the answer to ANY QUESTION you have on your fingertips, and not being able to even know what you WOULD ask if you could. try to imagine growing up in a world where any kind of hint, behavior, feeling, or queer gesture is AUTOMATICALLY heteronormalized (they are galpals, they were best friends etc). TRY TO IMAGINE, given all that, you coming to think, to the conclusion, that you finding people of the same sex attractive, pretty, interesting, is just normal, surely others do too, that it doesn’t MEAN anything, because you are straight, and therefore, you don’t have to overanalyze any of this. 

try to imagine, every time there’s any grain of possibility, or inkling, towards that unmovable object, it going through the same defensive, internalized, process in your brain: where you state time and again just how STRAIGHT you are, and so much so, that you have no issues talking about anything sexuality related, because why would you? so you do, almost as a DARE. you talk about the general attractiveness of other guys, about your attractiveness to them, you get visibly offended when when they don’t seem to reciprocate (after all it’s just an ego thing), you make sure other people hear it so much that they talk about just how absolutely straight you are too, you make jokes with other heterosexual dudes about you coupling up, you automatically assume gay relationships (instead of the heteronormative) even when they’d be seemingly absurd, but why would you question that?  and you are unapologetic open with your love and affection towards either gender, something you also like to talk about, specifically. and despite ALL OF the things said before, all of the things you grew up with, you’ve still felt from DAY ONE that there was never anything ACTUALLY WRONG with being gay, because, you’re just that naturally open, supportive, and accepting, even (obviously) not knowing anything about that experience, even despite all attempts at teaching you(beating you with it) otherwise, you are the GREATEST supporter of free love for OTHERS (as long as it’s not for you). and so why would you be awkward about any of it? 

you’re straight as can be. you say it often. others seem to share the opinion too. you can’t hurt anyone that way. there are only two options you know of, anyway, so if you like kissing girls, that’s it, you’re done, you’re okay, no one’s ever held the door open otherwise. and then before you even get into adulthood, you meet the ONE, who just so happens to be a girl, and is the one you’ll be with the rest of your life. you have everything you have ever wanted, after so much suffering and doubt over yourself and your identity and who you are. you have no pressing or tangible reason to ever question yourself, and make things confusing and possibly hurtful once more, ever again.
