Hyunsu.

He was your best friend for a while. You two had moved to a new apartment and had separate rooms, but always joined together to play videogames and what not.

You and Hyunsu were the perfect pair of friends, but what he didn't know was that you had a crush on him. A huge one, to be exact.

Masking your feelings for him was easy, yet hard.

Sometimes you just wanted to shout your feelings out loud, but then you were shy and decided to keep everything in because of the risk of rejection from your bestfriend.

Also, you didn't want to have a change in your friendship. You didn't want anything to happen just because your feelings got in the way, no way.

You loved seeing Hyunsu, but you couldn't anymore because of the infection going around, and he had caught it. It would cause his nose to bleed and his eyes would turn black.

People feared him as if he was some sort of monster, but you didn't fear him. Not one bit. You knew that Hyunsu was still the same person, just infected.

Eunhyuk had decided to keep him locked in an extra room that was on the main floor. This was decided after there was a vote on whether or not to kick Hyunsu out.

Of course, you were against this, and was very vocal about your feelings. The older man complained, but then he turned out to be infected as well. Karma.

You began to feel lonely as your best friend and crush was no longer by your side at all times. You missed the way he would look at you, or the way he would hug you when you first saw each other in the morning.

You never realized how much you could miss someone until they were no longer with you.

Tonight was a rather lonely night.

You were tired of not seeing Hyunsu, so you decided to have a plan laid out.

Tonight you were going to visit him. After hours was the safest option as Eunhyuk would probably be too busy doing something else, or at least you hoped that was the case.

You threw on different clothes - something a little bit nicer, also looking in the mirror to fix your hair.

Mixed feelings entered your mind at a sudden speed. Specifically about Hyunsu.

Should I tell him about how I feel? You thought to yourself, shaking your head to focus on your appearance instead of the many questions in your mind.

Grabbing your phone and headphones just in case, you also took a packet of ramen for Hyunsu. He had a lot of it, but it was his favorite flavor - Chicken.

You closed the door carefully and made your way down to the main level. People were most likely asleep as it was late, but you were just excited to see Hyunsu.

As you made it to the main level, you quickly peaked around to see if anyone was there. Turning around, you bumped into someone. That someone was Sangwook.

"Going somewhere?" He asked, his voice a tad bit quiet.

"Uh," you paused for a moment. "Yes..?"

"Going to see your boyfriend?" He teased.

"Wh- Hyunsu isn't my boyfriend, and can you keep your voice down! I don't need Eunhyuk on my ass about this. He doesn't let me visit in the daytime, so..." You replied back.

Sangwook let out a quiet chuckle. "I wasn't gonna stop you. Have fun and don't get caught. If I get asked anything, I never saw you."

"Thanks." You nodded and continued walking down the hall.

You eventually made it down to the room where Hyunsu remained.

With a quick peak inside, you opened the door, quickly closing the door behind you and noticing Hyunsu who was half asleep against the wall.

His lip was puffed out a bit and his cheeks looked so soft. You smiled at the scene but quietly went over and tapped him on the shoulder.

"Hyunsu."

Jumping slightly, Hyunsu's eyes shot open and looked directly into yours. His mouth was hung open a bit before he got a few words out.

"Y/N? What are you doing here?" He asked.

"I came to visit you," you answered. "I'm sorry if I disturbed you."

"No, no," he smiled. "You didn't. I'm happy to see you. I've missed being with you all the time."

There was that familiar feeling in your stomach - the butterflies that hatched from the cocoon. The feeling you couldn't wish away even if you wanted to.

"I've missed being with you all the time too," you confessed. "I brought something for you. It might be small but I thought you would like it."

Handing over the pack of ramen, Hyunsu's eyes lit up. "I've been craving this, oh my god. Thank you so much. I promise to repay you when we get out of here- well, if we do."

"Hey," you placed your hand on Hyunsu's shoulder. "We're both gonna get out of here. I promise you that. I'll do whatever it takes, okay?"

"Thank you," he said, "You're an amazing friend."

Ouch.

He didn't know your feelings, but you couldn't help but feel a tad pinch of bitterness at the mention of being a friend - because that's what you were. Just a friend.

You knew you had to confess today because although you did promise about both of you getting out, you didn't know if you would get infected yourself and how your body would react to it.

"What have you been doing to keep yourself occupied?" You asked, knowing you were going to confess soon.

"Staring at the wall," Hyunsu laughed - it was the sound of music to your ears. "I just, I don't know. I try to sleep or eat. I basically do whatever I can to be busy. I think about you sometimes, or all the time actually."

"I think about you all the time, too," You told him, your cheeks slightly burning with red. "I, uh."

You paused, clearing your throat. The nervousness started to rise to your throat.

"Are you okay?" He asked, his face full of concern.

"I'm okay," You reassured him. "I just need to tell you something, but I'm not sure how to.. say it, you know?"

"You can say it whenever you want," he patted your knee. "I'll be ready to hear it."

You closed your eyes momentarily, letting out a breath. "We've been friends for a while. I really love sharing a house with you, but being apart for so long made me realize something,"

You averted eye contact. "I miss you so much. I never knew I could miss someone as much as I miss you, Hyunsu."

"I miss you all the time, too, Y/N."

"My point is," you inhaled shakily. "I've learned that.. I have feelings for you. The feelings you have for someone you like. I'm sorry to have this all.. fall out on you, but I wanted to say that because I miss you every single day."

When you finally looked at Hyunsu, his face was mixed with confusion and other emotions, but you couldn't tell.

As he was about to say something, a familiar figure stood in the opened doorway, looking directly at you.

"Y/N, no one's allowed down here. I've told you that before." Eunhyuk had his hands on his hips as he looked down at you.

You quickly stood up. "I'm so sorry, uh, Hyunsu.. I'll see you later."

Hyunsu watched as you ran out of the room, his feelings left unanswered.

He wanted to say something.

Well, that was the plan anyways

In reality the two of you were too busy messing around with one another while cuddling

If anyone else was at the dorm they would leave immediately after this finding it very annoying to be there with you two lovebirds

Cause now you two had the whole dorm to yourselves to do as your hearts desired

If no one was there, some movie watching and teasing before the inevitable happened

"are you crazy?", eunhyuk stated in a rather calm tone which hid plenty other emotions. you scoffed at his question before inspecting your leg which was stabbed by a glass shard.

he sighed as he follows your line of sight. as soon as he saw blood dripping out of your leg, he gets up on his feet and carries you bridal style. the trip to the security room was silent, not like either of you knew what to say next.

he sets you down on the desk before searching for a medical kit. while he was doing so, your eyes followed him, deciding whether you should be the one to say something first.

dating him for about 2 years now, you knew him like the back of your hand, and right now you knew he wanted to scold you for risking your life.

"i know you want to say something so better say it now", you stated while looking at your injured foot.

slowly, you reached out and took a hold on the shard. you took a deep breath before quickly pulling it out.

"fuck", you cursed, eyes shutting at the intense pain.

eunhyuk approached you with the much needed medical supplies. he grabbed a chair and sat in front of you, gently placing your leg on his lap.

"that was dangerous". and there he goes.

he took out the antiseptic before pouring it on your wound. the suddenness made you hiss in pain since you weren't ready yet.

he muttered an apology before gently dabbing the excess off with cotton balls. he then grabbed the bandaid and cautiously wrapped it around your wound so as not to hurt you any further.

he sighs, pushing his glasses back on the bridge of his nose before continuing his lecture. "you could've died—"

"you could've died also", you stated, cutting him off abruptly. he sighs again, looking up at you before looking at your wrapped up wound.

"i'm sorry. i just didn't want to lose you", he confesses, still not meeting your eyes. it was your turn to sigh but you couldn't blame him. you would've felt the same if he was the one in your place.

you reached out and situated your hand on his chin, before lifting his face up so you can meet his eyes.

"i did what i did because i didn't want to lose you too. it was about to attack you and i couldn't just watch"

"but what if it—", he started but you cut him off once again.

"i'm alive, aren't i?", you asked and he simply nodded. he lets out a defeated sigh before leaning back on his chair, arms crossed.

"i can't make you promise me not to do it again, can't i?"

you smirked knowingly and a scoff leaves his lips. "glad we came to an agreement, lee eunhyuk", you teased causing a smile to form on his lips.

"hm, but on one condition", you cocked an eyebrow at his words, waiting for his condition. "don't leave my side"

You Appear On Weekly Idol Together ~ Jeon Jungkook

It had been years since Jungkook had last walked onto the set of Weekly Idol, but very little had changed. The only exception was the two men who were waiting to greet you on the set, offering their hands for you to shake.

“We’ll take good care of you today,” Kwanghee smiled, nudging your shoulder gently. “We know how excited your fans are to see you both with us, so we’ll deliver the best possible show for them.”

The two of you smiled appreciatively before being ushered off of the set so that filming could begin. A camera was placed on the two of you immediately as Heechul and Eunhyuk waited for the director to count them down before beginning the opening segment of the show.

You watched on as the two of them referred to Dynamite to introduce you both. “They’re bound to cause an explosion in your hearts,” Eunhyuk chuckled, glancing across at you. “Jungkook and Y/N, come on out and see us!”

Jungkook took a hold of your hand, pulling you onto the set, racing to stand on the right-hand side of the duo. As hard as he tried to hide it, you could see just how excited he was to finally return to one of his favourite shows that he’d done in Korea.

“Your fans are very excited for the two of you to be here,” Kwanghee began, glancing at the camera.

Eunhyuk did the same as your profiles came up. “It says, you’ve recently celebrated three years together.”

Your head nodded, feeling Jungkook’s hand squeeze against yours. “We have, it was a lovely time to celebrate together.”

Once the two of you had gone through your profiles, you started off with your first segment, ‘I caught you.’ Eunhyuk handed the two of you cards that the boys had come up with, and it was up to you both to decide who they would have chosen.

“I imagine that Jungkook is their favourite,” Kwanghee suggested, but both of your heads shook. “Do the boys prefer Y/N to you Jungkook?”

“The boys are honestly obsessed with her, she’s definitely preferred over me, it’s a losing battle to even try and get their attention over her.”

The round began as you watched Namjoon appear on the screen, reading out the question. “Who did I catch in response to the question, which one of the two would you prefer to be with in the middle of a zombie apocalypse?”

“Would you say that you’re both handy in a zombie apocalypse or is one of you better help than the other?” Eunhyuk questioned, glancing over at the script to make sure he was on the ball.

“I think the answer is obvious, they’ll always end up picking Y/N over me,” Jungkook groaned.

After talking through the answer for a few more minutes, it came as little surprise to either of you when Namjoon confirmed that he’d pick you over Jungkook as you were much more logical and thoughtful in troubling situations.

Kwanghee and Eunhyuk couldn’t help but mock Jungkook as he folded his arms across his chest. Whilst your ego continued to be boosted by the next couple of questions as the boys again picked you, they ended up moving onto the next segment before Jungkook ended up having a breakdown.

“Let’s move onto the Random Play Dance,” Eunhyuk announced, twirling his whistle around in his hand. The four of you pushed your white blocks to the back of the set.

It was a segment you’d seen many times before, often howling with laughter at how terribly so many artists did at remembering their own songs.

“To make Jungkook feel better, we’re going to use BTS songs today,” Eunhyuk chuckled, “Y/N, how are you with BTS choreographies?”

“I’ve had to watch him before onstage enough times,” you laughed, “so I reckon I’ll be alright.”

“Just try not to show him up too much,” Kwanghee pointed out to you, “he’s already had his heart hurt a lot on the programme today.”

Your head nodded, jabbing Jungkook’s hip. “He can take it, he’s a strong enough man.”

You listened closely as Dynamite was the first song that played, instantly appearing by his side in time for the chorus, which you absolutely nailed. Butterfly followed up, as you flew around with your arms out somehow managing to get the pass from Eunhyuk.

“They’re doing well,” Eunhyuk called out, naturally keeping a very close eye on you both as a main dancer himself.

“Y/N almost looks as if she could be a part of BTS,” Kwanghee added, another comment that quickly caught Jungkook’s attention. As much as he loved the fact you knew his routines, there was no way he was going to let you show him up.

The chorus of Boy with Luv soon followed, as you felt Jungkook nudge your side, so he was centre stage, ignoring your groans at how stubborn he was to get things right. You let him take on the song, but as soon as DNA followed up, you were back beside him, putting every ounce of energy you had into capturing the audience’s attention.

“The two of them really are competitive,” Eunhyuk chuckled as he pushed you again when 21st Century Girl played.

He couldn’t quite believe that you were dancing the routine, having released the song long before the two of you started dating. He’d almost forgotten to dance himself in disbelief that you knew it.

The final song, On, played out, and the two of you somehow managed to finish the challenge in perfect sync with each other, without shoving the other out of the way to try and take the main camera.

“Pass!” Eunhyuk yelled as soon as the song came to an end, “we’ve never had quite an eventful Random Play Dance before, you too were pretty determined.”

“There was no way I was going to let her win,” Jungkook smirked, “even if we are supposed to do these things as a team. They’re my songs, so I had to be the one to smash it.”

Kwanghee chuckled beside you, resting his hand against your shoulder, “is he always this competitive? How do you manage to deal with this every day?”

“You’ve just got to let him think that he was better, even though I smashed those dances better than he did,” you continued to tease.

“Have you ever thought of adding an eighth member?” Eunhyuk pushed at Jungkook, noticing the jealous expression on his face. “Or maybe you could let her join Super Junior?”

Straight away, Jungkook’s head shook. He was happy to be the target of the jokes for the day, but there was no way he was going to accept that you were better.

“She did alright,” he chuckled, trying to bring the conversation back on track. “But she’s no match for BTS, she wouldn’t be able to keep up for long.”

You turned questionably to look at him, “you’re the one that had to resort to pushing me over just to make yourself look good, remember?”

The two hosts chuckled, “maybe we should wrap things up before we see our first breakup on the show.”

“Let’s say thank you to Y/N and Jungkook for joining us today,” Eunhyuk smiled, “do you want to say a few words to your fans.”

Your head nodded, looking directly towards your camera. “Thank you for supporting us today, and we promise that Random Play Dance won’t cause us to breakup.”

“But if she continues to show me up when dancing BTS routines, we just might,” Jungkook teased. “Army, I hope you enjoy watching the episode as much as we enjoyed making it, hopefully Weekly Idol will have us back soon.”

The director yelled for the cameras to stop rolling as you waved, letting go of a huge sigh of relief as finally you were done.

“The two of you were so much fun,” Eunhyuk smiled once the cameras had stopped, “this might just be one of my favourite episodes.”

Kwanghee nodded beside him, “you make a beautiful couple together, it’s lovely to see how well the two of you get along.”

“I hate her really,” Jungkook teased, “it’s all a lie for the show.”

“He wishes that he could hate me.”

I feel like part of the reason he would be happier with a younger partner is because he wants to feel like he can look after and protect you, and that definitely includes defending you against people who judge the age gap.

Age couldn't matter less to Yesung. If you love him and support him and let him be weird and clingy with you, he's a happy boy. Probably struggles with hate comments about the age gap though. Gets a bit insecure and mopey, so you need to give him even more cuddles than normal. If someone he knows makes a comment about it, he will just get mad at them, even if they are joking. Because he loves you. And no-one is going to stop that.

Shindong

Boy is a realist. He will be straight with you if he ever feels like the age gap causes an issue, but it rarely does. If he feels like it is bothering you, he won't drop it until you talk it through with him. Overall, he is far too chill about it to let something as insignificant as age be a problem. If anyone tries to tease you two about it, he will just lean into it, joining in on the joke to make it clear that it doesn't bother him at all.

Another boy who needs to have the 'where is this going' talk. He is far too soft with children and therefore probably wants to be with someone who sees a future with him and some kids in it. If he gets insecure about the age gap and worries you might think about leaving him because of it he will spoil you to try and keep you around. You just need to remind him you love him and you chose him, and he can stop buying you things because you will run out space to keep them.

Siwon

The gentleman of the group. Very traditional, and would naturally go for a younger s/o anyway. "Thank you so much for doing this for me," Jisu said, "Eunyu was right to trust your surgical experience." Y/N smiled and looked and her boyfriend, hoping to see some kind of happiness bubbling in his expression.

You stopped moving not so long after, starting a messy make out session with him still inside you.

Kyuhyun’s phone suddenly rang on your nightstand and he moved slightly to see the screen, he chuckled.

“What is it?”

“Just Eunhyuk,” he answered. He showed the screen to you after he send a text back to him, saying he would be at the dorm tomorrow.

“See, that’s why I prefer doing this at my place,” you teased. “He would hear us, he never leaves his room.”

“It’s alright now,” Kyuhyun placed his phone back on the nightstand and pecked your lips with a grin on his face. “Shall we continue?”

Super Junior Reaction - Dating a Gamer Girl

Leeteuk: Jeongsoo isn’t one who normally plays video games. However, I feel like you being a gamer girl would get him hooked on a few. He may ask to join you while you play or even ask you to make a video for his YouTube channel centered around gaming. He could beside you and watch you play for hours if he could. He’ll ask of you can teach him how to play a few games. Might I suggest starting with walking simulator games and then progressing to more difficult ones.

“Please tell me I’m not going to find a dead body up in the attic.”

Heechul: Ngl, this is probably how you two met. Heechul is quite the gamer himself I believe so you two would probably bond over this. Maybe starting off at internet friends before beginning to date. I can see many dates revolving around videos games and gaming things. Internet cafes will be frequent spots for the two of you. You guys might as well start a gaming channel together or something cause that would be funny.

“I didn’t mean to kill you! No wait! Why’d you kill me?!”

Yesung: Another pretty avid gamer. Jonghoon, much like Heechul, would also end up meeting you through video games in some way. It’s something that you two bond over as well. It would certainly be something that brings you two closer together. You may or may not do something together involving video games or occasionally post little videos of you two playing together and possibly sabotaging each other.

“Why’d you do that? I’m on the same team as you!”

Shindong: Donghee would be thrilled to date a gamer girl. He’s pretty good at video games himself so I can see this being something he enjoys doing with you. Playing games on his downtime with you would be something he looks forward to. I don’t have a doubt in my mind that this could become something that goes on YouTube or twitch. He would certainly be down for any videos you make.

“Wanna hit the arcade after dinner?”

Eunhyuk: I think Hyukjae would be the type to try and annoy you while you play only to end up being fixated on the game you’re playing. He’d be pointing out anything that is coming at you if it’s a shooting or mob like game. He’d get pouty here and there if too much of your attention is on the game and just place kisses on your face until you return one. He will also beg to let him play sometimes, which will be frustrating on your end. He’ll be dying every three seconds (if this isn’t me).

“Why’s that think attacking me! (Y/N)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Siwon: Siwon would enjoy watching you play video games a lot. He finds the concentration you have while playing extremely cute and attractive. The fact that you have this thing that you are so passionate about and have no problem displaying is something he likes. He’ll ask you to walk him through some of your favorite games and, like Eunhyuk, end up being quite fixated on you playing more often than not. 

“Let’s be real here, I’d die within the first 30 seconds of playing.”

Donghae: Much like Eunhyuk, Donghae would also practically be annoying you in efforts to get your attention. He would try laying your lap and leaning up kissing you. This would occasionally cause your failure on some missions in the game. However, it would have you giving kisses when you win something or get an achievement. When he gets the chance to play with you, he’ll get a bit pouty if he loses or dies, whining about it before going and attempting to play and hope to win this next round. Cute relationship here.

“One more round and then we can get dinner. Please~~”

Ryeowook: Sass ball Ryeowook would be nit picking your gaming skills before shutting up as he watches you play. He knows he wouldn’t be able to play better than you, but he loves teasing you. He’ll got from teasing to cheering you on as you play without a second thought. Are there moments where he wishes that video games didn’t hold such a huge place in your life? Yes. But he loves watching you play and getting excited about the little aspects of the game.

“Call me over when the boss battle starts!”

Kyuhyun: Another avid gamer. Kyuhyun and you would play video games together quite often. Like Yesung and Heechul, this might’ve been how you two met. He would invite you to play with him on his channel or just end up having weekly gaming times together. He loves spending time with you while doing something you both love. Video game related dates are pretty common with you two.

Idol Crush on Their Show - Suju Reaction

Requested by anon! Now I admit, I’m not an expert on variety shows, so most of these will just be vague descriptions of variety show lol. Again, below the cut ‘cause it’s long.

Leeteuk

Leeteuk is one of the best members at keeping his cool. He’d see that you’re appearing on the show, and would feel a little nervous, but his priority is being the best MC for the viewers. If he had never been on a show with you before, or knew this was your first time on this show, he’d try and catch you before hand. Leeteuk would make sure you felt comfortable, especially if you were a rookie idol, cracking jokes and telling funny stories about the other MCs and Super Junior’s first variety experiences. If you had been an idol for a while, he would use it as a chance to get to know you better and tease you for not being on one of his shows before. After the show, Leeteuk would come congratulate you, thank you for coming, and maybe ask you out. 

Heechul

Heechul is a MESS. As soon as he finds out you’ll be on Knowing Brothers, he’ll try and hide his red ears. The night before, he can’t even sleep, he’s so nervous. Heechul is about as transparent as their Fanship photocards, so everyone else knows he’s got a little crush. If you think they aren’t gonna tease the crap out of him, you’re wrong. Heechul will be blushy and nervous during most of the filming. By the end of the show, you would have figured out what’s going on. Once filming ends, you would go over to ask you out, and Heechul would accept with a huge smile on his face.

Yesung

Yesung was promoting Pink Magic around the same time you were promoting your latest work. He knew there was a chance you two might be on the same show, but that didn’t stop him from freaking out internally when his manager told him. At home, he would be practicing what he wanted to say to you. He would reach out to Leeteuk and Heechul and beg them to help him with his variety skills (as long as they didn’t tell the other members). Before the filming, he would approach you and ask about common interests. When he found out you liked coffee, he would invite you to a nearby cafe after the shoot. 

Shindong

Shindong is another fairly level-headed member. He'd have a small smile on his face when he found out you two would be on the same talent swapping competition show. Shindong would teach you to dance like him, and you would teach him to sing like you. Over the course of the show, he'd use his charms to win you over.  He wouldn't ask you out until the show was over, just in case you declined. After the finale, where you two won, he would pull you aside and tell you that he loved working with you, and wanted to continue your friendship to something more.

*side note, Shindong's singing voice? What an angel*

Eunhyuk

Eunhyuk thinks he's acting cool and collected when he hears you'll be on Weekly Idol, but spoiler alert, he's not. His blush is easy to see.  Kwanghee confronts Eunhyuk about it but he just plays dumb. Eunhyuk, like Leeteuk, tries to make you as comfortable as possible when you come on the show. He'll make jokes about being a variety show killer to ease your nerves. After the show, he would give you his contact information "in case you need anything" as a way to get your number so he can talk to you more.

Donghae

A blushy, whiny baby. As soon as he hears that he's on the same show as you, he's going to his members and his managers, begging them for help. It's all he can talk about in the weeks preceding filming. Shindong and Eunhyuk get so fed up, they arrange for you two to meet a few days before, because Donghae is so nervous. When you actually film the show, it goes super well because of how you already know each other (and how you're already dating).

Siwon

Siwon is excited to hear that you’re his costar in his latest drama. He has a big crush on you due to your acting ability and can’t wait to see it in action. If your characters are romantic interests, Siwon will definitely bring flowers to break the ice. He’s definitely going to ask you to hang out with him off set so the two of you can get to know each other and build up chemistry “for the show”. As the two of you get closer, he’d find himself falling more in love with you. Once the show is filmed and promotions for it are over, Siwon would ask you out for real. 

Ryeowook

Ryeowook ends up being more hyper than usual when he realizes that he and you will be on the same show. He reaches out to a mutual friend of yours to find out your favorite kind of coffee, and makes sure to bring it to you. Ryeowook would give you a tour of the studio beforehand, telling you about the best places to get away from everyone and funny stories from on set. You end up matching his energy level, becoming hyper too, to make for a very energetic shoot. The other guests can’t help but comment on how similar you two are, and Ryeowook can’t hide his smile every time they say it.

Kyuhyun

Kyuhyun is the type to seem completely unaffected. When he, Mino, Jaehyun, and PO walk in to find out you’re the newest cast member, the editors are a little disappointed in his lack of reaction. He greets you in a friendly manner, but doesn’t have the excitement the others (especially Mino) has. Later on, Hodong brings it up, suggesting that Kyuhyun doesn’t seem to care because he has a crush on you. Cue flustered, blushing Kyu, frantically denying it. You’ll tease Kyuhyun about it, saying you’d rather he like you too much than not like you at all. After filming, you’d approach him and make sure he’s alright, with no hard feelings after your teasing. A close friendship (and eventually relationship) would soon develop.

Eunhyuk: First Date

//Requested by an anon! Eunhyuk’s first date with a few mishaps! This was really cute and fun to write! Let me know if you liked it!//

Dressed in your best clothes, makeup perfectly set all ready to go. But, you are still sitting on your couch. Your date is nowhere to be seen, you aren’t even sure if he’s coming to pick you up anymore. He should have been here 20 minutes ago, you thought. It would be a lie if you say you weren’t a little annoyed.

You tried calling him only for it to end up in voicemail. You left him a text, a few, and got no reply. Another 10 minutes passed and you strongly contemplated to just change out of your outfit and call this date off. 

You got up and walked to your bedroom and the bell rang as if on cue. You noticed the fervent knocking against your door. You headed for the door and opened it.

It was Eunhyuk. The man who was late. You wanted to stay angry at him, but seeing him standing there nervously with the bouquet in his hand, you know you couldn’t. 

“You’re late,” you said looking back to the clock hanging in your living room, “very late,”

Eunhyuk looked at you apologetically, “I know. I know,” he says as he passed you the flowers.

You wanted to play this out because teasing Eunhyuk is fun, “you better have a good reason.”

Eunhyuk nodded his head, “I’m not lying but the car wouldn’t start, so I went to borrow Donghae’s. That buzzer didn’t want to pick up my call, so I went up to his house. I told him about it and he still didn’t want to lend me his car..-” 

You raised your brows, slightly doubting his story. He noticed this, “it’s true. Took me forever to convince him, and when I finally did, I got lost with the directions. Lee Donghae, really.”

“Why didn’t you pick up my calls?”

He sighed, “I.. my phone died on me..” 

You nodded your head, “so is the date still on?”, you teasingly asked.

He looked at you, shocked and taken aback. He must have thought you were really angry. “I.. I guess we can do it next time. I’m sorry, really. This wasn’t how I planned today to be,” 

You break out into a smile, “I’m kidding, let’s go,” you joked, putting the flowers aside and then shyly holding his arms. You felt Eunhyuk letting out a sigh of relief and you let out a chuckle.

Throughout the car ride, both of you talked. You had to admit, it was a little awkward at first. But, the more you talk to him, the more realise how much you both have in common. Vanilla latte with half shot? Iced chocolate? Horror movies? Sweatpants over shorts? 

The conversations were lighthearted, mostly funny anecdotes. Eunhyuk who slowly eased into his nervousness was now replying actively even leaning back onto the driver’s seat. 

After a while, Eunhyuk reached the destination. He parked the car swiftly and then exited the car to open your doors for you. “Why, thank you!” you teased. Eunhyuk snickered and bow his head with his hands on his abdomen. 

He offered his arms and you shyly wrap your arms around his, trying your best to not let the shade of red forming on your cheeks be seen by him. “Shall we?” he asked. You just squeezed his arms and nod.

Both of you walked to the entrance of the restaurant. It was weird, not seeing any lights switched on. There also weren’t any other customers around. You thought Eunhyuk went overboard and booked the whole restaurant and you shot him a look. He looked back at you, also obviously flustered. 

When you reached the front door, the big “CLOSED” sign was up in your faces. You read the small note under the sign, “due to an unforeseen circumstance, we are closed for today. We apologise for the inconvenience,” you read clearly and then looked at him.

Eunhyuk couldn’t help but just laughed out loud causing you to also break out into a laughter. “This is the worst,” he says in between his laughs. “I can’t even,” he continues.

“What a ride, Hyukjae. What should we do now? It’s probably too late to go anywhere else.”

Eunhyuk didn’t answer. He purses his lips and you see the gears in his head turning. He finally looked back at you, “okay let’s go”

You weren’t quite sure what or where exactly he is taking you to. After a while, you arrived at a parking lot facing the river. You shot him a puzzled look. “I know you put in a lot of effort dressing up. I didn’t want to just go home. I figured we could just stay in the car, have takeout as we watch the light show over the river,” he answers. 

“This isn’t definitely what I planned, but I was really looking forward to today. I feel like I messed up a lot, so I hope this is enough for all the failed plans I had today. It’s not fancy, but I just don’t want to send you home this early,” he continues.

Was Hyukjae always this sweet? 

Your thoughts were disrupted with the knocking on the car’s window. Eunhyuk opened and stepped out. He paid the guy and then entered the car with plastic bag full of fried chicken and noodles. “Ta-dah!” he shakes the bag.

You laughed, amused and impressed. 

Eunhyuk pulled his seat back so that he has more space to eat, and you did the same. You adjusted your position and faced him, holding the plastic bowl near to you. “Donghae is gonna kill you if he finds out we are eating in his car!”

“It’ll be our secret then,” he shrugs, clearly not caring about Donghae at all.

After the short makeshift dinner, you both were now facing the river, waiting for the light show to start. It was silent. “Hey,” he starts as he looked at you. “I really want to apologise for today,”

You tilt your head to face him. “From being late, to the closed restaurant, to this impromptu dinner,” he says.

You looked at him softly, “It’s okay. Really. I never had a date like this before, but I like this.”

The worry on his face slowly disappears and Eunhyuk felt relief taking over his body. “I feel bad, I really do. But thank you,” 

You just smiled at his response, “if you feel bad, then, make sure you take me out properly the second time...” trailing your words, unsure if he got it.

The light show started immediately after, and you took out your phone to record. “It’s so pretty!” you squealed as you wildly tap his arms.

“Not as pretty as you,” he says and then rest his chin on the steering wheels. 

The date came to an end and he accompanied you back to your apartment, savouring every second remaining. You stood in front of your door, “this is it. Thank you for today,”

Hyukjae looked down to his feet and then back at you, “are you free next weekend? I want to take you out again. Properly.”

You looked away, stifling the smile that’s threatening to break out. He got it. “Yes I am.”

Eunhyuk smiled, “okay, look forward to it!”

You moved closer to Eunhyuk and gave him a small hug, which surprised him. As you break the hug, you left a kiss on Eunhyuk’s left cheeks. “I’ll look forward to next week then,” you said as you unlock the door.

Eunhyuk waited for you patiently, and didn’t move away. He only made his leave once he hears the lock on the other side click, ensuring that you are home safely.

He finally walked away heading to the carpark, his hand holding his left cheeks. He looked back at your apartment and just smiled like an idiot. Cute.

✿ when they all stood in line and introduced themselves, yanna as always was in between jisung and haechan

✿ when kwanghee and eunhyuk noticed how taller they got, her and chenle shared a look and he immediately said “i don’t think yanna did” and the members laughed

✿ as soon as the mcs started measuring how long jisung’s and haechan’s legs are, yanna started stepping backwards

✿ “i don’t think i belong here” she joked, leaving to stand next to renjun who patted her back to jokingly comfort her while she smiled sadly

✿ “cute” jeno commented but yanna only punched his arm

✿ “but we have something to celebrate! our cute teddy bear, chenle and adorable marshmallow, yanna have become adults this year!”

✿ as the members clapped, yanna bowed while also telling chenle to do so

✿ eunhyuk then commented on how yanna has grown into a beautiful girl when he would always catch her crying during their(nct’s) trainee days

✿ “she still cries a lot” chenle teased, yanna then jokingly said “wow, this friend...”

✿ when jisung said that they would bluff a lot since they’re already adults, yanna immediately moved away from jisung acting betrayed while hyuck “comforted” her saying “it’s part of his growing up, it’s okay it’s okay”

✿ when eunhyuk mentioned their new song, yanna smiled with so much pride

✿ “there’s a line of idol group members in sm entertainment that i cherish, and they’re all dancers. these two are the last ones, jisung and yanna.”

✿ “yanna has great control over her body when dancing.” he complimented while yanna kept bowing

✿ “while jisung, when he dances he even controls his hair.”

✿ when jisung started talking about controlling his hair, yanna jokingly said “this kid’s weird” to hyuck before linking arms with him and moving to the side

✿ the clip of their ridin’ performance played and the seriousness can be seen in all their eyes

✿ when they were asked to sit down, the line was still the same so yanna was sandwiched between jisung and hyuck

✿ their old friendship bracelets suddenly became the topic and yanna immediately shook her head as she remembered how bad the smell of iron was on her wrist

✿ when eunhyuk jokingly asked chenle to order for the whole SMTOWN, yanna joked along saying “write ‘sajangnim’” and everyone laughed even more

✿ as soon as the “rumor” that there’s someone in the gc that they don’t reply to, yanna inhaled and exhaled while acting like she was trying not to cry

✿ “we have a groupchat. we send funny pictures on it and this person sends the most. about 80% percent of them looked like they’re supposed to be funny....” hyuck explained. “but we don’t understand it!” yanna continued for him while the others laughed.

✿ they started the “hug me” segment and yanna whispered she was nervous and excited at the same time

✿ when the MCs said there weren’t any reactions to renjun picking a question, yanna stood up and clapped while cheering then sat back down once he got the question

✿ she suddenly got nervous when renjun stood behind her asking if he has to only pick one.

✿ when renjun hugged hyuck and jisung who were on her opposite sides, she suddenly said “i really think i should leave this spot”

✿ the members kept guessing the question and yanna had an idea but kept quiet because she didn’t want to get it right

✿ when asked if jisung was talkative and jeno said “once you enter our dorm, you’ll want to get out.” yanna added, “he’s like a fly following you around”

✿ when jeno got his question and said “whoever gets picked for this, they’ll regret it later”, yanna stood up and went to eunhyuk saying “can i sit here for a while, sunbaenim?” but jeno pulled her back to her seat

✿ jeno was again standing behind yanna and she started saying “i should move, 심각하네”

✿ yanna hugged jisung when jeno picked haechan for the answer to his question

✿ when it was jaemin’s turn to pick a question, yanna immediately said “if you come here too, i’m moving to another seat”

✿ as soon as yanna heard footsteps behind her, she moved to jaemin’s seat and said “it’s probably haechan-hyung” and smiled proudly when she was right

✿ yanna got really confused at jaemin’s hint for the question and said “what are you talking about?!” and almost dropped the blanket on her lap

✿ yanna tried to explain what chenle meant when he said that hyuck could be the member you want to hit the most with actions

✿ “not like this [punches his thighs] but like this [hits is arm playfully]” while the others laughed

✿ as soon as jisung picked a question, haechan and yanna held hands but immediately let go when he was hugged by jisung

✿ yanna and chenle fixed haechan’s hair after he freaked out over getting picked again

✿ chenle said the question might be “who’s the nicest to him?” but yanna immediately said “no way”

✿ when jaemin kept on rambling, yanna muttered “what? are you okay? do you wanna go home?” while the members laughed

✿ it was finally time for yanna to pick a question and she hoped it wasn’t a bad one

✿ the question she got was “who do you worry about if that member is not around?” and widened her eyes

✿ “this is hard” she whined, kwanghee then said “but it’s a good one” while eunhyuk said “it could be a bad thing too, depending on how you interpret it” while the members said they were nervous

✿ “i think this applies to everyone, though” yanna said while walking behind the members

✿ yanna walked around a bit more before asking if she can hug 2 people since there were 6 of them and the MCs said it was okay

✿ yanna then stood in between jisung and jaemin and hugged the two of them

✿ “THE MEMBERS SHE LOVE THE MOST” renjun guessed immediately, but jeno said “if it was that, she’d hug me and jaemin” while yanna just said “that’s not it”

✿ “yanna, if you were allowed to pic a 3rd one for this who would it be?” kwanghee asked to help the members figure out what it is

✿ “haechan-hyung.” she said, the members were clueless about it even more

✿ when asked what caused yanna to answer jisung and jaemin, she said “just because...” and laughed

✿ “it’s because i’m used to them being around just me or us” she simply said.

✿ the members guessed more but yanna kept her mouth shut while jaemin and jisung kept glancing at her

✿ they moved on to hyuck’s question which was “who do you think is doing so well?”

✿ he said it applied to all but was asked to pick 2 so he picked renjun and yanna

✿ “members who don’t like him?” yanna said while the members laughed

✿ “members who are innocent but don’t look like it?” jaemin guessed but jeno turned it around and interpreted it as “looks innocent but isn’t”

✿ “is this because we didn’t pick you?” yanna said but members just laughed

✿ jaemin guessed again that maybe it was the “most sentimental” members and said it was because of their rooms

✿ they then described renjun’s room as a model room, jeno’s as a bicycle shop, jaemin and jisung’s as a hacker and a kid’s room while yanna’s was an aesthetic room. “she even has fairy lights in her room!” chenle said.

✿ renjun said both her and yanna have a love-hate relationship with hyuck so maybe that was part of why he chose them

✿ chenle picked his question and picked jaemin for it, he also said yanna was a top 2 answer but he wanted to pick only one

✿ when jaemin said it was usually jeno, jisung and yanna who would make him up, yanna said she’s the only one who does it nicely but renjun disagreed

✿ “we’re on tv, hyung.” she said to the oldest one.

✿ chenle and yanna both said “jeno is jealous” at the same time when he reacted about jaemin saying he loves jisung

✿ when the “ottoke song” segment started, yanna was finally at ease

✿ when hyuck and renjun did the song/aegyo together she kept giggling and saying “cute~”

✿ when jaemin started, yanna and hyuck both ran to jisung and hugged him for support

✿ when jaemin finished, yanna was already sitting on the floor clinging to her chair while laughing

✿ as soon as jaemin and hyuck did the song together, yanna started stomping her feet saying “ah, cute~”

✿ she immediately volunteered jeno to be the next one to do the aegyo and cheered him on when he did

✿ “jeno-hyung’s cute as is” she commented after

✿ but when jeno and jaemin did the song together, yanna looked traumatized

✿ after they did the song, yanna couldn’t look at the two and chenle started laughing at her while pushing her to face her two best friends

✿ “NO, I NEED TIME TO RETHINK MY LIFE CHOICES” she yelled out jokingly but got over it when it was jisung’s time to do the song

✿ “jisungie, erase the bad memories” she said while encouraging him to do it

✿ yanna was smiling throughout jisung’s aegyo and kept giggling while eunhyuk said “look at the difference in yanna’s reaction to jisung and the others” while laughing and she said “he’s normal”

✿ when hyuck suggested that jisung also needs to sing with jaemin, yanna supported the idea and even sat on the floor to watch the two

✿ she was very delighted to watch their aegyo but froze when she realized she was next

✿ “you should do well or jaemin will come in-“ “no no no, please”

✿ yanna did her aegyo and the MCs liked it along with the members except hyuck and renjun who said it was “too pretty”

✿ “WHY CAN’T I BE PRETTY?” she complained while jaemin was already walking towards her

Chapter 1: Comeback

“Dude! Lei!” Lucas cheered into my ear as he (again) combed his fingers through my recently chopped black hair. Independent from those who cried that I ruined my visuals, he boasted, “I love this!”

Lucas was too excited. About my haircut, about my still-secret impending debut in SuperM’s comeback, about getting to work together after years of being best friends. Even as I struggled to escape his reach, trying to smooth my hair before a stylist could scold me for wasting their hours of hard work, trying to force my smile into the hard line that would fail to convince Lucas to behave, I laughed. I was too excited too.

My laughter died with the ever-present realization that somebody is always watching. That curse of being an idol meant that we couldn’t feel this way— carelessly happy— or, rather, that we shouldn’t.

Before I could remind Lucas (he always needed to be reminded), Mom’s voice broke through the on set bustle. “Break’s over, kids! Hands to yourself Lucas— this is why we have dating rumors! You don’t want to end up like the idol who never debuted!” She spoke without glancing up from her clipboard, without faltering in her fast-paced course to who knows where to do who knows what, the fabric of her bright red pantsuit swishing in time each step.

Lucas finally stepped away, instinctively abandoning his assault on me to stare after Mom. As I dropped my phone into my backpack, satisfied that there was nothing worth a response in my inbox or on social media, he whistled. “Dude, Mom is hot.”

Were I not used to that— Lucas referring to my mother as if she were also his, calling her hot— I might have cringed. Indifferent, I forced my eyes to roll because that was the kind of reaction Lucas liked. “Do you ever think that’s why you can’t get a girlfriend? The fact that you lust after my mother— our manager?”

Lucas shook his head. “Nah. I can’t get a girlfriend because everyone things I’m dating you.” He poked my forehead accusingly as if his smothering affection weren’t the cause of those false rumors, and I swatted his hand away. “Plus, didn’t ya hear? We can’t even touch a person of the opposite sex or else we’ll end up like the idol who never debuted.” His breath huffed out of his forever-swollen lips.

The story about the idol who never debuted because of an unplanned pregnancy was some kind of fable, myth, or urban legend that pervaded every aspect of life as an S.M. idol. Maybe nobody ever really believed it. Maybe everyone thought it was some cleverly crafted tale to get us to focus on training. Maybe we thought we wouldn’t hear it after debut, but it was whispered in response to every dating scandal and mentioned by Mom still on the (frequent) occurrence that Lucas ignored my boundaries.

All I know is that Lucas and I hated that story, and we expressed our hatred differently. Lucas was determined to rebel against it not by getting a real girlfriend but by committing to being my best friend in every sense of the word, regardless of what the press said, regardless of how fans often misinterpreted, regardless of Mom’s plentiful scoldings. And I— well, Lucas said that I was the perfect idol because I was as obedient as I was talented, but the truth was that becoming the scandalized idol in the next cautionary tale was my biggest fear. That’s why I strictly observed a self-imposed total dating ban: fear of controversy. And maybe deeper down, a fear of intimacy, but more on that later.

I shied away from Lucas’s reference to the scandalized idol, rationalizing to his widening eyes, “I’m due on B set. I have to re-do my introduction because I kept getting distracted by Taemin’s laugh yesterday.” I wondered what could have been so funny to Taemin, but I never would have asked back then.

Lucas’s mouth fell open, I’m sure, to tease me about being incapable of functioning around Taemin, but his turn to speak was stolen by a boisterous trio of men I would recognize anywhere.

The faces of Donghae, Eunhyuk, and Shindong were among the most familiar of my childhood. I could remember vaguely when they debuted. I was six years old, sitting backstage where Mom could find me as soon as the first Super Junior Stage was completed. Being an unofficial trainee at the time, I was studying Mandarin.

Anyway, what matters is that I couldn’t escape once Super Junior fixed their gaze on me. If I did, they would tell Mom, and I would be in trouble not only for disrespecting my elders from work but also my elders in a familial sense.

“Where’s our manager?” Shindong barked at nobody in particular. Nobody responded because Super Junior’s demands for Mom had become too commonplace to garner any attention.

“Isn’t this a bit bold?” I smiled gratefully while accepting a strawberry milkshake offered by Donghae, who greeted me with a small closed-mouth grin. “You guys have stormed onto the SuperM set every day this week.” Which meant I had a strawberry milkshake every day that week. Oops. Another failed diet.

Donghae said, “We’ll cross improper lines for you mom every day of every week,” and Eunkhyuk added loudly, as if aspiring to arouse Baekhyun’s attention, “Yeah! She was our manager first! She loves Super Junior best!”

Baekhyun appeared out of nowhere. As always, his voice— a bright shout— preceded him. “Not a chance! She’s our manager now! I’ll never let you take her!”

And just as quickly as he had appeared by my side, Baekhyun dashed off in pursuit of Mom with Eunhyuk and Shindong following closely behind.

I shook my head. Goofball Baekhyun, running the wrong way.

“What is it?” Donghae tilted his head to meet my gaze. “She’s not that way?”

Donghae was so earnest, so intent on looking right into somebody’s soul, that these moments when I held his attention were blush-inducing. I squirmed, and Lucas snorted. “Oh, uh, I don’t know. I don’t know where Mom is. It’s been kinda hectic, and I haven’t seen her in a few hours—”

It was hard enough to lie to Donghae without Lucas butting in.

“What are you talking about?” Lucas had been quiet for too long, so he shouted through a mouthful of barbecue chips fished out of my backpack. Thief. “She just told us— ow!” He shrieked as I grabbed his hand and crushed it with all the force I could muster.

“Sorry, Donghae.” I bowed to my senior. “We really have to go! I hope you find my mother!” Guilty, my eyes flinched away from his frowning face.

Once we were out of Donghae’s earshot, and once I dropped Lucas’s hand, he stretched his digits and whined, “That hurt, Lei! Why did you do that? And why did you lie to Donghae about Mom?”

“Because,” I hissed, narrowly dodging an intern running with two tall cups of coffee, “they’re fighting.”

“They’re fighting?” Lucas gasped.

I nodded. “Yeah.”

Or, at least, I thought they were fighting. I didn’t know why Mom was avoiding Donghae, but I had overheard vague snippets of her conversations with Heechul when they were supposed to be watching some drama in the living room after dinner. I heard her sigh of relief when she learned that she would be responsible for organizing SuperM’s comeback and tour rather than assisting with the next Super Show. I didn’t need to know the specifics that Mom would never tell me. No matter how much I liked Donghae, if there was a fight, I was on Mom’s side.

“Here.” I passed my milkshake to Lucas after taking one long sip. “You can have this. I can’t take it onto set.”

“Ooooh!” Lucas’s eyes rounded in gratitude. He skipped off before turning back to shout, “Wait, Lei, what’s my schedule again?”

He needed to listen during briefings instead of playing around with my hair.

Having settled into the chair, sitting perfectly still so the audio technician could clip a microphone to the collar of my sheer black sweater, I responded (not loudly enough to disturb the tech), “You’re supposed to take pictures with Mark.”

“Okay! Thanks!” He grinned.

That time, my smile wasn’t forced for the camera; it was a reaction to Lucas.

Taemin and Kai were unapproachable, each for completely different reasons.

Lucas joked that I was the born and bred idol, and most people seemed to agree, but I always thought that if the perfect idol existed, his name was Lee Taemin. Like me, he debuted at 14. Unlike me, he proved himself worthy of fame and admiration with pure talent.

Hate comments didn’t need to remind me of the role Mom played in my success. I was grateful and, under my carefully crafted proud exterior, I was insecure. I was not talentless, and I worked hard almost in a vain attempt to distance myself from the poorly disguised mutters that I was only an idol because of Mom; Taemin was beyond talented, and he worked hard because he knew no other way to stride toward his goals.

“You need to stop being so weird,” Lucas told me after one of my first practices with the group. “You can’t just stare at Taemin when you pout about how everyone stares at you.”

Lucas was right. I hated being lumped in with the millions who failed to acknowledge Taemin’s humanity. But the truth— that I was some kind of hypocrite— was easy for Lucas to see; it was easy for him to say.

Lucas was the only person who didn’t seem to realize that Taemin was the center of every room. He was the only one who didn’t cling to Taemin’s every word. He was the only one who didn’t see Taemin’s other-worldly glow.

I think that’s why Lucas was my best friend: he didn’t see me or Taemin or anybody as idols. He saw us as people, liked us as people, and that was rare. From that first day at practice, I was torn between the desire to be like Lucas and the desire to be like Taemin.

Anyway, Kai didn’t like me. He didn’t hate me (at first) or anything, and he didn’t particularly dislike me, but he was the only member (aside from Taemin, who I admired too much to approach for fear of saying something stupid) who didn’t know me pre-SuperM.

Even once I was approved to debut with them, Kai hadn’t held eye contact with me for more than three seconds at a time. I wasn’t sensitive about it, and I wasn’t in the market for a new best friend— Lucas was more than enough— but Kai’s aversion to me was inconvenient, annoying, and frustrating considering that we were cast into a subunit together.

We recorded our songs (which were the most sensual of my career because they were meant to evolve my image from bubble gum pop Idol to something more “adult”) separately. Despite the quickly approaching tour dates, we hadn’t once practiced our choreography together. Kai was my senior, so I couldn’t approach him with my concerns about our lack of preparation. That’s why he was unapproachable; I had to wait patiently for him to address our tension.

I hoped that he would have taken the first step toward me before we had to shoot promotions, but Kai still couldn’t meet my eyes— despite the photographer’s repeated demands that were carefully phrased as requests— as our bodies were pressed flush together before a swarm of cameras.

Although I would rather forget, I think I can pinpoint the moment Kai decided to hate me. He flinched away from my touch again as I draped my arms over his shoulders and laced my fingers together behind his neck, per the photographer’s instructions.

“Come on, Kai!” I rolled my eyes, whining in unison with the rest of the members, who had gathered around the set nearly an hour ago after finishing their schedules. My face was hot not because of the close proximity to somebody as handsome as Kai, not because of the glare that hooded his dark eyes, but because my patience had run out. “Everybody is waiting for us! Can’t you just act professionally so we can get this done some time this year?”

His eyes widened as if I had slapped him across the face. Note: if you ever want to insult Kai— and I can’t imagine why you would— challenge his idea of professionalism.

Kai’s jaw tightened as he forced his eyes away from me to glance tiredly at Mom. “Manager, do we have to do this? I would really like to avoid a dating scandal.”

My next few words were kind of hypocritical since nobody feared dating scandals more than I did. “A dating scandal? These are pictures for our subunit— for our job. Stop making it weird.”

“It is weird!” Kai argued without looking away from Mom as she pinched at the bridge of her nose. He took two big steps backward, and my hands fell from around his neck to my sides. “And I don’t understand—”

“Just do it like this, Kai!” Baekhyun bounced onto the set, leading Lucas by the hand. After winking at the camera, encouraged by Lucas’s laughter (and Mark’s panicked, “Yo, man, what are they doing?”), Baekhyun threw his arms around Lucas’s shoulders and tossed his head back.

When everyone except me, Mom, and Kai laughed, Baekhyun leaped into Lucas. They toppled onto the hard ground, the only indication that they hadn’t broken their neck or any other bones being their ear-splitting laughter.

“Fine!” Mom was calm despite her sharp increase in volume that made me flinch.  “If you don’t want to be in a subunit with Lei, Kai, then you won’t be.”

While Kai sighed in relief, I wheezed, dejected. My heart sank down to my ankles. It was bad enough to lose the opportunity to be in a subunit with one of the best dancers at S.M., it was worse to lose it at work where I couldn’t express disappointment, and it was worst to lose it in front of Taemin, who stood stiff and red at slack-jawed Taeyong’s side.

Embarrassed and eager to escape the stares, I bowed to Kai and set to scoop Lucas off the floor, where he still laid giggling with Baekhyun, because he would make me laugh hard enough to drive away this sinking sensation.

“Where are you going?” Mom’s voice stopped me in my tracks. “Stay where you are, Lei. Kai—”

She didn’t have to finish the order. I understood mainly from Kai’s wince that he was ejected from our subunit— not me.

“Wait,” Ten said slowly, in time with my realization, “Lei’s subunit is still a thing?” His eyes sparkled. He smiled because the choreography he created for me and Kai would still find an audience.

Lei’s subunit. My subunit. The title was exciting and terrifying all at the same time.

Who would replace Kai? I wondered, watching him sulk to Taemin’s side. As Taemin’s eyes flashed to meet mine for the briefest second before he muttered something to Kai— probably words of comfort, probably words to condemn my role in Kai’s semi-public disgrace— I could only think Please not Taemin. Don’t let it be Taemin. Anyone but Taemin.

And I looked at Mom pleadingly, as if she would be able to read those thoughts through my eyes. She blinked back at me.

“Oh my God!” Mark shot both hands up in the air and waved them excitedly. “I’ll be in Lei’s subunit! Let me do it, Momager! Please!”

Oh God. Please not Mark. Don’t let it be Mark. Anyone but Mark.

“Why should you get to do it?” Ten glared up at the standing Mark from his metallic folding chair. “I choreographed their dances, so I should be cast.”

“But I’m, like, the king of subunits!” Mark rose to his tiptoes and waved his arms again in an effort to secure my attention. “If you pick me, Lei, I’ll get you into NCT Dream!”

That was a bit of a running joke— my longtime aspiration to perform with Dream. Hearing it in that moment of high stress made me laugh out loud. One of those side-splitting laughs. Real. Mark smiled at having untangled the knot in my stomach with little effort. In moments like those, I thought it wasn’t so bad that he had a crush on me.

“First of all,” Taeyong interjected, ever the mediator in NCT conflicts, “Mark, you can’t get anyone into Dream—”

“Who do you think talked the agency into making Dream a fixed unit?” Mark’s face turned scarlet as he yelled, and Taeyong didn’t bat a single eyelash.

“— Second of all, Lei doesn’t get to pick who takes Kai’s place.” We all shifted at Taeyong’s casual acknowledgment of Kai’s ejection. “Ms. Kim does. So both of you—” Taeyong eyed Ten and Mark sternly, and I wondered how they didn’t fall apart under his gaze— “be quiet and let her make her decision.”

Mom nodded at Taeyong gratefully. “It’s not much of a decision to make; I’ll just employ the second choice—”

“It’s me, right?” Baekhyun finally jumped off of Lucas, stood upright, and brushed off his all-black suit while flicking his bleached bangs out of his eyes.

Baekhyun’s goofy smile faltered when Mom shook her head. “Lucas, get up. Your dream is coming true: I’m giving you permission to touch Lei.”

“Oh yeah!” Lucas flew to my side.

Before I could wrap my mind around the fact that I would be in a subunit with him— my best friend, my rumored boyfriend— Lucas grabbed me around my waist, which was exposed under a fitted white crop top— and pulled me flush against him into the pose Kai had struggled with for hours. “Leicas forever, suckers!”

As Mom ushered Baekhyun to stand with the others off set, and everybody groaned at Lucas’s ever-enthusiastic embrace of our rumors, I laughed.

The camera flashed at last. Finally relieved enough to breathe, I returned Lucas’s embrace and joked, “Is that going to be our subunit’s name? That silly ship name?”

Lucas laughed as he lowered to press his forehead to mine. That was how things should have been all along: me and Lucas free to smile at each other and express our friendship— as silly and affectionate and beautiful as it was— to the whole world without fearing backlash.

“Look at this.” 

I slid my phone to Lucas across the glossy light wood floor as we sat, stretching in preparation for dance practice. I watched his eyebrows knit together as he scooped the phone into his hands; I watched his jaw fall open as he scrolled past the headline and through the fans’ comments. 

“Hey.” Taeyong kicked at Lucas’s foot before joining us on the floor. Always the leader (even without the title in SuperM), he reminded, “Phones aren’t allowed in practice.”

Lowering effortlessly into a stretch that resembled the splits, Ten defended, “Momager isn’t here yet, so—”

“Look at this!” Lucas shoved my phone into Taeyong’s face. Then, as if Taeyong couldn’t read for himself, Lucas said, “Pop News is writing about the idol who never debuted!”

As Taeyong gripped the phone with his slender hands (and a curious Ten and slack-jawed, messy-haired Mark gathered around him to gawk at the screen), Taemin plopped onto the floor next to me. His knee brushed against mine, and I stiffened while he smiled despite the room’s tension, skin shimmering without the aid of makeup. 

“We don’t have to worry if it’s Pop News,” Taemin said. “They aren’t exactly a credible source— remember how they covered that ‘Any Other Name’ scandal?”

Nobody could forget the chaos surrounding the Korean adaptation of a best-selling novel written by a young American woman. The love triangle between the author, a scandalized actor (Jungkook) and the author’s best friend/famous fashion designer (Jimin) was the biggest scandal in recent history. Everybody knew that gossip as if it were the plot of a classic blockbuster film or an almost distant, almost tangible high school memory, so I shouldn’t have been surprised by Taemin’s reference. 

“You keep up with celebrity gossip?” I asked Taemin quietly, my eyes narrowing to see how this information fit with my conception of him.

Taemin’s face flushed pink. He mistook my interest for criticism as he often did in those days, and I didn’t know how to correct him. 

While trying (and failing) to connect his phone to the Bluetooth speaker, Kai started, “Maybe Pop News isn’t credible—”

“They’re definitely not credible.” Ten crawled to the side of the room to tuck my phone into my bubble-gum pink backpack. Turning back to the group, he grinned, “Pop News is, like, if Mark was a news outlet: cringey, baseless—”

“Hey! I’m not baseless!”

“Anyway.” Kai puffed his cheeks full of air. “Pop News may be a scam, but they have a lot of followers. Sometimes if a lie is heard by enough people, it becomes like the truth.”

It would have been nice to be able to disagree, to believe that truth is truth, and lies are lies, and rumors are just rumors. I wanted to disagree. But I couldn’t. 

Kai continued, “And obviously Pop News isn’t wrong about everything. Jungkook and that author were dating! They’re even engaged now!”

So Kai kept up with celebrity gossip too. Was that the kind of thing he and Taemin talked about over meals? 

While my pulse quickened at the talk about dating scandals and I tried to ease my anxiety by resuming stretches, Baekhyun stirred from his nap in the corner of the room. 

“Well!” Baekhyun yawned. “If you ask me, Momager is the idol who never debuted.” 

“What?” The rest of us shrieked in unison, and Baekhyun laughed like a maniac at our identical wide-eyed open-mouthed expressions. 

“Just think about it! When Taemin, the king of dance—” Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Taemin stiffen at Baekhyun’s playful compliment despite the bashful smile pulling his lips taut— “kept screwing up that choreo, Momager demonstrated. And she was no amateur.”

Considering Baekhyun’s evidence, I gnawed on my cheek. Mom was a gifted dancer; her precision, like Baekhyun said, rivaled Taemin’s. No, her precision enabled her to find fault in Taemin— perfect Taemin. 

Baekhyun wouldn’t mention this, but Mom was also a natural singer. She proved that on the first day in the studio when she coached Baekhyun through a challenging run. After he crossed his arms and whined, “What you want is impossible!” she stunned him silent by belting the notes in one attempt. 

But Mom couldn’t be the idol who never debuted, I frowned, because that meant I was the reason—

“Look, Mom is totally hot enough to be an idol,” Lucas smirked before his eyebrows lowered skeptically. “But don’t you think Lei would know if her mom was a former trainee?”

At that remark, everybody turned to face me. 

No, I wouldn’t know if Mom was a former trainee. 

I knew very little about Mom’s past because I hadn’t asked many questions. I knew that I was born in Atlanta, Georgia, her hometown. I knew that I could not remember the last time we spoke to my father. I knew that life didn’t really begin until Mom started her career by managing Super Junior. 

I didn’t remember anything before Donghae started bringing me milkshakes, and Heechul started making me laugh with funny faces, and Ryeowook (or Wookie, as I had always called him) started fitting our tea parties into his busy schedule, and Eunhyuk started unofficially training me to be an idol through dance lessons. I didn’t remember anything before Super Junior became my family. 

As I crumbled under my members’ stares, as I drowned in the guilt of having neglected Mom’s pain if she was the idol who never debuted (in the guilt of knowing I had never asked about her because the spotlight had always been on me), Baekhyun repeated, “Momager is the idol who never debuted!” “What?” 

We all turned to see Mom’s ghostly pale face in the doorway so quickly that we whimpered and rubbed at the backs of our necks. Whiplash. Great. 

“Don’t say stupid things, Baekhyun,” Heechul scolded as he nudged Mom’s motionless body into the dance studio. “Of course Kimberly isn’t a failed trainee! That story about the idol who never debuted is just something we tell you kids—” he jabbed an accusatory finger at me and Lucas— “to keep you from dating!”

Lucas boasted, “I knew it!” And everyone laughed as he triumphantly pumped his fists into the air. 

My laughter was forced, though.  

A glance down at my watch confirmed that Mom was half an hour late; Mom was never late. Heechul never escorted her to her schedules. Heechul never called her by her full name; to him, she had always been Kimi. Heechul never pressed a comforting kiss to the top of her head. 

Something was wrong, and I couldn’t ask what because we were at practice. And I wouldn’t have been brave enough to ask in the privacy of our home. And I wouldn’t have been strong enough to stomach the answer.

Summary: You and Donghae had kept your dating a secret from everyone, but will happen when his members tease you and your co-worker.

It was a normal workday in the set of the newest drama you were acting in. Another more romantic one including some dangerous situations. You were acting the love interest of the main character, who was acted by Choi Siwon. Your and his relationship as co-workers was nothing new as you two had shared some other movies and TV-shows, however, this time was the first time you played his lover. And it’s not like you felt too weird about it since you and Siwon were good friends over all and you felt comfortable working with him.

   As the shooting had ended, Siwon came to you and patted your shoulder once. You smiled at him.

   “Good work”, he said. “You’re a great actress, I feel like we only need one take with you.”

   You chuckled at his comment. “Thanks, but I think you overestimate me a tad.”

   Siwon let out a warm laugh, ending it with his charming smile. You two shared a moment of silence until he looked like something just came to his mind.

   “Oh right”, he took your attention. “I wanted to ask if you had some time tonight. I am going to meet up with my friends and I’d like for you to meet them.”

   “You mean Super Junior?” You raised your brow. Siwon nodded his head.

   Considering your friendship, it was surprising you hadn’t seen his friends and fellow members of the boy group he was in, Super Junior. Well, except for one.

   “Sure”, you answered. “I am free tonight.”

   A gentle smile formed on Siwon’s lips and he nodded once as an agreement. He gave you the time and the address, before saying farewells.

It was the evening.

   You sat on the back seat of a taxi that drove you to a rather familiar looking place. You weren’t sure how fancy you should be, so you picked your one dress that would never go wrong. A simple dark green dress that just covered your knees, hugging your body in the right places, the collar was a little open and the shoulders bare, but it didn’t look too revealing, nor too expensive.

   You took your phone out of your bag, quickly texting Siwon how you had arrived in front of the address he had given you. He replied a quick “I’ll meet you outside.”

   You stepped out of the taxi after paying the driver, and soon after you saw the smile of your friend, Siwon. He was wearing a rather casual suit outfit, making you feel slightly overdone, but then again, you wanted to look your best.

   He walked to you. “Glad you could make it.”

   “Of course.” You shot him a smile. “I am very eager to meet the famous Super Junior.”

   Siwon chuckled, offering his arm to you. You hooked yours around his arm, just figuring that as a friendly gesture.

   “You look very lovely”, he commented.

   “Thank you”, you replied. “You look very lovely yourself.”

   He nodded his head and thanked you while you two walked inside the building you actually knew quite well. You had been there many times.

   You and Siwon walked the stairs, in front of a door you again knew very well. “Lee”. You smirked to yourself, wondering what he would think. You hadn’t told him Siwon asked you to join them.

   Sure enough, when the door opened, a familiar handsome face of a certain Nemo smiled brightly. Until his eyes fixed on you, and that’s when his eyes opened wide.

   Siwon raised his eyebrow as he watched his bandmate stare at you like he had seen a ghost, which you imagine it felt to the very confused Donghae.

   “Donghae?” someone behind him asked. The other man looked at you and Siwon, a smile bright on his face.

   “Siwon!” he said and opened his arms, to which Siwon reacted by hugging him.

   “Hyung”, he replied happily.

   You pressed your lips together as you felt Donghae still staring at you, but this time his eyes were narrowed like he was glaring at you like a little kid. You took all of your willpower to not hug him tightly and give him a loving kiss.

   Donghae and you had been dating for a while, but due to you both being under a spotlight, you had decided to keep it a secret, from everyone. That included his bandmates, and even his best friend Eunhyuk.

   “Siwon”, the other man spoke. “Is this your co-worker you spoke about?”

   Siwon turned to look at you, smiling wide. “Yes, she is the best in what she does”, he spoke highly of you. You giggled lightly and noticed how Donghae gave a slight side-glare to Siwon.

   “This is Lee Hyukjae”, Siwon patted the shoulder of the other man. “And that is Lee Donghae.”

  Donghae didn’t move, but you tried to play along and nod your head as if it was your first time meeting.

   “Aish, she is really pretty”, Eunhyuk said and then smiled at you. “You look really lovely. I hope Siwon is taking good care of you.”

   You raised your brow at his last comment, wanting to ask more what he meant by it, but you were interrupted by some loud noises coming farter back from the apartment. It sounded like the whole place was filled. The group really lived up to their name, you thought. You had been very eager to meet them, but Donghae was always a little shy.

   You closed the door and walked further in, however, Donghae grabbed your arm and pulled you back lightly. Gladly, Eunhyuk and Siwon were not facing you two and were too occupied with greeting rest of the members.

   “What are you doing here?” Donghae whispered.

   “Siwon asked me to join”, you explained. “Did you expect me to refuse?”

   “You could’ve told me...” he said.

   “I think it’s more realistic like this.” You smiled, quickly giving him a sneaky peck on his cheek. “Like we met the first time.”

   Donghae sighed but nodded. What could go wrong?

   “Is fishy trying to steal your woman?” you hear a loud, obnoxious voice. You looked up at the source, seeing a very beautiful man with an amused smirk on his plump lips. No questions about it, this was Kim Heechul.

   Siwon chuckled nervously. “No hyung, she is not- We are just friends.”

   You side-glanced Donghae, who looked very tense. You very sneakily squeezed his hand behind his back to make him relax, which he did. Your touch was enough to make all of his worries wash away.

   “Sure, sure”, Heechul kept teasing.

   You and Donghae joined the others and you chuckled.

   “No, we are really just co-workers”, you explained the situation. Donghae nodded his head lightly, but no one really noticed.

   “Pfff, like you would tell us”, Eunhyuk joined the teasing.

   “Don’t you two play your romantic interests in the new drama?” Heechul asked with his grin widening.

   “That doesn’t mean anything!”

   Everyone in the room looked at your left, seeing a very heated Donghae. He soon understood what he had nearly yelled and his whole face heated up clearly.

   “I mean... just because they act, doesn’t mean they’re together...”

   “And why are you suddenly acting so weirdly?” the loud Heechul kept asking.

   “Just leave them be, Heechul”, another man shook his head. He looked like the father of the group, surely being the leader Leeteuk.

   “But don’t you think they would make a good couple?” Eunhyuk asked. “Is there going to be a kissing scene??”

   You sighed internally. Donghae looked at you with wide eyes. Another thing you hadn’t told him yet.

   “Yes”, you answered. “But we haven’t shot that scene yet.”

   The guys just said “ooh” in unison, making Siwon facepalm and apologize to you, and Donghae, as expected, was very tensed.

   You shook your head. Maybe this was a bad idea. Poor Donghae.

   “You should go on a date so it would be more realistic when you kiss!” someone added.

   “Just date, you would be a power couple”, another one said.

   Siwon scratched the back of his head, realizing he couldn’t stop their teasing. You opened your mouth to say something, but before you could, Donghae looked determined and spoke.

   “No they can’t date”, he said with a confident voice.

   All of you looked at him with weird looks. But Donghae, he looked very serious.

   “Why not?” Eunhyuk asked with a confusing tone.

   “Because she is taken”, Donghae kept his voice firm.

   “Hae...” you whispered.

   “And how would you know? By who?” Heechul asked, crossing his arms.

   Donghae smirked, wrapping his arm around your waist, pulling you close to him. “By me.”

   The whole room went silent. You could feel all the eyes on you. You looked down to the floor, feeling slightly embarrassed until you heard Siwon call your name.

   “Is this true?” he asked.

   You smiled at him and the rest of the members, nodding your head. “Yes. Hae and I are dating.”

   Donghae smiled wide, kissing your cheek lightly. Then the whole room was filled with noise as all of the guys were talking at the same time, asking questions from you two.

   You shook your head, but chuckled, looking at your boyfriend with a raised brow.

   “What?” he said. “I just couldn’t stand not talking about my beautiful girlfriend.”

   “Sure”, you smirked. “You totally weren’t jealous.”

   Donghae shook his head, a smile on his face. “Nope. Never.”

   You simply smiled at him, looking into his brown eyes. All the noises in the background faded as it was just you and him. You leaned up and kissed Donghae sweetly, not having a care in the world.

   As you leaned away, you whispered: “I love you”. To which he replied, “I love you more.”
