5, 10, 24 & 25 for jasper pretty please 🙏👀
THANK YOUUUUU 🫶🫶🫶
How far is your OC willing to go to get what they want?
This was a little hard but Jas doesn't know what they want yet but I do 😭 they're just in the process of figuring it out. They want stability and an actual support system/family that's there for them (everything they didn't get in childhood basically 🚶) . They at least know that they want to help people to the best of their ability, it's their job but they've always been compassionate. Plus, it makes them feel useful and In Control™. In terms of the agency, I think I'm gonna have to wait until we're further in the series to figure that out completely.
What's an AU that would be interesting to explore with your OC?
we've talked abt this once or twice but I WANT A GRITTIER UNIVERSE 🥲. I don't even have a particular universe in mind but I'm an edgelord at heart. I'm working on my own kinda universe/story atm but I'm too embarrassed to share many details yet. Sorry for the boring answer, I just can't think of anything specific for them </3
What is an alternative life path your OC might have gone down? How different would their life be if they'd made those decisions?
I think had they not been so self-destructive in their youth then they would've finished college and became a social worker, probably doing art on the side. But things didn't quite work out that way obviously. Their life would be pretty different, I would say? They wouldn't be speaking to Rebecca, let alone fucking around in the agency, I can tell you that much 😔
What is your favorite thing about your OC?
I love how repressed they are 🫶. Childhood neglect got them truly messed up in the membrane. They're compassionate and loving but also soooooooo stubborn and a control freak, and also so moody. They assume everyone will leave them so they're avoidant as hell. They hate themself but for the wrong reasons bc they are not aware of their actual flaws. I could go on and probably will in the tags bc I never shut up. I know it's kind of a jokey answer but it truly is the thing I enjoy most about them and I look forward to plotting out how they'll either blossom or retreat further into themself throughout the series. ALSO really enjoy that I'll be able to keep adding onto them.

Final Fantasy IX Party Members in Order of How Much I Adore Them (Most to Least)
Tumblr media
Blank - Idc that he is merely a "guest" party member I just want to know what straight male producer at Square green-lit a zombie leather-brief-clad twink for this game. I wish I had the swag that Blank has. In addition to wearing the least clothes, he's also the sassiest one of the Tantalus Gay Polycule(TM), and therefore the most gay. Also claims to be lady's man but offers no evidence of this. (And apparently he was cool enough to be the only guest party member to be included in this concept art)
Beatrix - Also a guest party member, but an extremely rewarding one to finally play as after she kicks your ass so many times. The general of the all-female army of Alexandria serves so much cunt. Her sword is called Save the Queen which is arguably the most memorable and definitely cuntiest name of a minor weapon in any Final Fantasy game, my feelings about Her Majesty Lizzy aside. And her headgear is nonsensical except that it is hot
Freya Claybourne - Moving into the main playable characters, let me first acknowledge that dragoons are probably the hottest job in Final Fantasy, and Freya is one of the coolest. Freya is furry fodder as an anthropomorphic rat "Burmecian", but somehow maintains more poise and elegance than any other main cast member. Her musical theme alone could draw out some tears. Her devotion to Burmecia even after its destruction makes me almost think chivalry could be a good thing sometime, somewhere.
Vivi Ornitier - Pause: why does Vivi have a last name when no other black mage does? Regardless, everybody loves Vivi. How could you not? The odd black mage design from early Final Fantasy games becomes quite cute when characterized as a lost little boy that was created using arcane magic to take over the world. Vivi's character arc is perhaps most touching of all, moving from confusion to sadness to hope.
Garnet "Dagger" Til Alexandros XVII - In a kingdom dedicated to protecting a secret crystal, naming 17 princesses "Garnet" seems like a bad idea. Anyway, she's your typical tomboy deuteragonist found in oh so many JRPGs but Dagger might be a little better than others because she's not manic-pixie-dream-girling anybody (unlike, say, Rinoa from FFVIII); she doesn't change Zidane much and he doesn't really change her. Dagger grows wiser from exposure to the world and not from her monkey boyfriend. The plot is bigger than them both.
Zidane Tribal - Zidane is not the most remembered protagonist in Final Fantasy, definitely less remembered than Cloud or Squall from VII and VIII, but I think that's why he's one of my favorites. He's not as moody. In fact he's a relatively static character whose main change is being more serious by the end. He crushes hard on Dagger, but by the climax his involvement is more connected to Kuja, which I find more compelling, even if that also follows a well-established pattern in FF games.
Quina Quen - Quina, to me, is a strange experiment in gender fuckery that is mostly successful despite being used as comic relief; they do let Quina an Vivi get "married" without anyone treating it as an insane concept, and Quina has his own pronouns that everyone uses. S/he (maybe we can just use "they" now?) is simple, and simple is good. Cook food, catch frogs. Would that we could all be more like our genderqueer kuing Quina.
Adelbert Steiner - This is easily the best first name/surname combo in FFIX. If you do not love Steiner by the end of the game, you are without a soul. He's annoying at the premise, but by the end he is our collective babygirl. He tries so damn hard, and he is a certified lad with strong lawful-good allegiances that grow a little more chaotic over time.
Amarant Coral - Ah, the edgelord. If it wasn't going to be Zidane, someone had to be it. Amarant's look is not my favorite character design, but his arc is heartwarming. Unfortunately, we don't know enough about his past for it to be fully rewarding.
Eiko Carol - (Not related to Amarant of the very similar last name.) Eiko is a sweet but sassy little girl with magic powers and a tragic backstory, much like Rydia and Relm from earlier games. But this time she has a horn and a tiny moogle companion named Mog, and Mog is the best thing about Eiko.
Cid Fabool IX - I like Cid because he was a bug. As a human and a guest party member, he's not quite as cool. He's a bit of an adulterer, but he learns his lesson so I guess he's fine? Still, one of the more fun Cids in the series.
Cinna and Marcus - The last two guest party members. Marcus's love for his "bro" Blank is the only reason I remember him. (It could've been gayer but go off ig.) I'm not sure why I remember Cinna exists. He's comic relief, I think? Kind of frightening with his soulless eyes, honestly.

The Crow (1994)
Alright Cult of Cult. Do I really need to introduce this one? Let's get all 90s and gothy and maybe brace ourselves for a bit of cringe, but like in a fun way. It's the Holy Grail of Hot Topic, 1994's the Crow Starring Brandon Lee.
Sermon
Apparently before the auto industry totally crashed Detroit was already a total fucked to death pile of burning shit, or at least that's what the crow would have you believe. Sorry Bruce Campbell, and other people from Detroit, but mostly Bruce Campbell. According to the Crow the city of Detroit is the kind of place where gangs of warlock anarchist arsonists will bomb buildings, and murder and rape whoever they feel like and then walk around bragging about it the next day with absolutely zero consequences. Funny then that if Detroit was so bad they had to go to film this movie in Wilmington North Carolina which is definitely a fucked to death pile of burning shit. I can say that, I'm from there and I got the fuck out. My brother is going to kill me if he ever reads this. (It's okay, these are all jokes people). Did you know they also filmed the Super Mario Bros movie there ... also cuz they needed a really shitty looking distopia. Moving on ...
The ludicrous criminality of the Crow's Detroit is particularly on display on Halloween. In Detroit (apparently) Halloween is known as Devils Night and it's legitimately just a night of pure lawlessness and chaos and kids aren't even safe to get candy, except later when we do see trick or treaters. Eric Draven, hunky goth rocker who sort of looks like he could be Bruce Lee's Kid and his fiance are murdered by a gang of vicious criminals. One year hence, Eric is resurrected by a mystical crow (that is actually a Raven), to exact his revenge on the gang that murdered him.
He paints his face like sad Alice Cooper and refuses to listen to Joy Division, just covers. He murders Tin Tin (a knife guy) just for his long gothy duster, he murders Fun Boy and forcibly ejects heroine from her arms and tells her "Go be a good mom now" which actually works. (have I told you about our Lord and Savior Sting? He gave me the strength to get off drugs), he blows T Bird up dick first, and then comes for Skab? Scraap? Scooby? in a meeting of all of Detroits villains and just about kills them all.
He is supported by the most 90s little girl to have ever graced the screen, and I am here for it, and Officer Albrecht, who's played by Ernie Hudson but I like to call him Zeddemore: The Most Underrated Ghostbuster. The leader of the bad guys, who I cannot beleive wasn't played by Brad Dourif or Tom Waits, is pretty interested in the occult. He keeps his witchy girlfriend around and she makes him fun dishes like smoked eyeballs, and her main use is that she knows that the Crow is the Crows weakness. They set Tony Fucking Todd on the bird, and I guess you just have to hurt the bird and not kill it, and Eric loses his healing factor and other macabre undead powers.
The Crow, Jimmy the Raven, pecks out Dr. Girlfriends eyeballs, I honestly forget how Tony Todd gets offed, and Top Dollar gets Gargoyled (that is impaled on a gargoyle). Funnily enough that is more Gargoyle related impaling on screen then in the actual movie Gargoyle: Wings of Darkness where a Gargoyle is supposed to have impaled a guy.
The Benediction
Best Feature: Injustice League
In the Crow we have not only a set of super memorable villains but they are played by the bad guy all stars. John Polito as the most lowly of the bad guys as a kind of sleazy pawn shop owner who buys ill gotten gains. Tony Todd, who's size is really on display here, the freaking Candy Man is in this movie. T Bird is the head of Top Dollars goons and is played by David Patrick Kelly, you might know as the "Warriors Come Out and Play!!" bottle guy from the Warriors, or as Jimmy Horne from Twin Peaks, and of course Top Dollar himself is played by Michael Wincott. Wincott is not a particularly celebrated actor but has played villains effectively in Robin Hood, the Three Musketeers, and Dead Man.
Best Set Piece: Detroit Style Hot Dogs
The Set design of the Crow is perhaps one of it's most fantastic features. It's very moody and ethereal. It's just real enough to not take you out of the film, but fantastic enough to set mood and theme above realism. From Eric Draven's apartment, to the church where the final battle occurs they are all fantastic. I think that's why I really wanted to shine the spot light on a very minor set piece that would get nary a mention but just as effectively represents the qualities I was just talking about and that is the Maxi Doggs Hot Dog Stand, where a lot of the films exposition for audience surrogates takes place.
Worst Effect: Freeze Frame
At a few points in the movie the film makers made a strange decision to do these freeze frame transitions. I only noticed it twice in the movie where it was particularly stupid. I'm sure the film makers at the time thought it was a moody and atmospheric choice that highlighted the suffering that Eric Draven was going through, but it didn't age well. If you don't have the sensibilities of a goth girl from 1994 then it's very very hard not to laugh at just how self involved the movie is about it's super sadness.
Worst Feature: Tragic Accident
Solely based on the film itself, it is that very gothic and dated sensibility that hurts the Crow. The little sarcastic dance he does when he flees the police, quoting Edgar Allen Poe, and bowing to Albrecht. These affected behaviors that I'm sure seemed snarky and right on to the target audience only serve to make Eric Draven seem like an unbearable neck beard edgelord and not the troubled dark soul he's supposed to be. I'm sure at the time it seemed unique and gothy but that shit went out of style for good reason, people could see through it. It's a shame that the Crow himself was some of the cringiest parts of this movie now that I'm seeing it as an adult and not a 13 year old middle class boy with no real problems.
This however is not the low point of the movie. It's not news now and if you're reading some dudes review of The Crow on Tumblr then you probably already know the story. The worst thing about The Crow is that Brandon Lee was horrifically killed on set while filming this movie due to some negligible prop malfunctions. A series of unfortunate events that lead to the actor spending 6 hours in surgery fighting for his life before eventually passing. It was not a quick or painless death and it's really impossible to watch the movie without an appreciation for the fact that this kind of fun dark adventure was going to be a vehicle for Brandon Lee's career wound up taking his life. He was 28. I really wish I could have just bitched about the goofy goth stuff and moved on, but that's not the world we live in.
Best Effect: The Gargoyling
Maybe I should have called this best kill. But I'm not sure which it is. The slaying of Top Dollar at the Climax of the film was just super effective. The pointed wings impaling his chest and that horn coming out of his mouth, it was morbid and excellent and just fit the tone of the movie perfectly. I mean how many other movies can you say Cause of Death: Impaled on a Gargoyle.
Best Bird: The Raven
I tried very hard to look up the name of the bird that primarily performed in this movie and could not find anything. There was a Raven once upon a time called Jimmy the Raven, but that was in the 50s and I don't think birds live that long. There was a team of Ravens performing as the crow, they were chosen over crows for their larger size, and more imposing silhouettes. I just think it's so wonderful to see these often maligned birds get a chance to show off their talents. Corvids of all kinds are incredibly intelligent creatures. Im a sucker for animals, if you haven't already figured that out. I really liked seeing the ravens hit their marks, particularly the one whos job it was to drop the wedding ring into Sarah's hand at the end of the film. You can see that greedy little bastard do his trick and then look of camera at his trainer like "treat please!". It's very cute.
Best Actor: Top Dollar Performance
I'd love to take this opportunity to just put praise upon Brandon Lee, he truly gave everything for this role, but unfortunately with what was put to film we actually have very few character moments with Eric Draven. Stuff happens to him, and he does killings and fights. There's definitely some personality, but I felt like I walked away knowing almost nothing about who Eric Draven was. He was clearly a good dude but that and a few hobbies and a relationship and you don't really have a character yet. He's unfortunately not given a lot of acting to do, instead just relegated to stunts and action sequences. That were notably cool.
The bad guys in the Crow have a lot more character and among this who's who of character actors, Michael Wincott takes the cake. Hell he was standing next to Candyman himself, Tony Todd and still stealing the scenes.
Best Character: A Few Good Apples
Is the best character in The Crow really going to be the cop? The commissioner Gordon stand in? yeah, it is. Not to be political, but I don't like cops, but I guess in a world with magical birds and eyeball smoking I can suspend my disbelief and let Ernie Hudson be #1 cop dad. His character is really the heart of the film, since all Eric can do is brood and fight, we have to care about someone in this movie.
Best Sequence: Halloween Party
The best sequence of the movie is of course the scene where Eric Draven busts in on the Devil's Night party planning commission. I think Top Dollar brought Scrappy Doo there just so he could lure out the crow, knowing the baddest assholes in all of Detroit would be gathered it was likely that somebody was going to kill the beast, or if they couldn't at least Top Dollar could get a feel for his enemy. It's a bullet flying action sequence with a ton of weight. I can't put my finger on this all to common weightless third act problem that big budget super hero and action flicks have nowadays, but whatever that issue is, the Crow does not have that issue. From this point on the Climax feels earned and I am invested. For that reason, The Crow is honestly better in spite of its awkwardness, than many of the super hero movies out today.
Worst Sequence: My Guitar Gently Weeps
Speaking of brooding or fighting. The best sequence was fighting, the worst is brooding. I get that Eric was in a band or something, but didn't he have shit to do. It seemed like it was a cool idea for a shot, but for like a whole seen, watching somebody play an 80s guitar solo, that stood out so brazenly from the choices of music in the rest of the movie was extra corny. It felt like someone's( dad trying to relate to their kid. Oh you like Music. The Dresden Dolls eh? Oh man, then you're going to love Slash's Snake Pit!
Summary
The Crow is dated. It is iconic but I wonder how many of the people that hang that poster on the wall have watched that movie since they were kids. It's interesting how what i've liked and disliked about this film have changed so much sense I was a kid. It's a cheeseball fiesta. If you have matured at all beyond thinking that being sad is the same as being deep then you're going to like it a little less than you did when you were younger, but it is still solid. There's not much to hate on. I'd watch it over and over again. I was really afraid it would not hold up at all, but returning to The Crow was a completely positive experience.
Overall Grade: B

okay here it is, part 1 of my sci fi tv and movies rec list! i’ve split it up into 2, kind of by tone and theme. these recs are on the lighter side. part 2 is for fans of darker sci fi. i could’ve gone on tbh but i had to draw the line somewhere. it’s not perfect but i hope you find something you like that you haven’t heard of! full titles, trigger warnings, and diversity/general notes under the cut. ask box open for any more specific questions!
part 2/2
If you liked STAR TREK and STAR WARS:
Black Mirror: USS Callister: (tw: simulated child loss, brief torture) coworkers get trapped inside their boss’s Star Trek spoof video game. It’s led by a white woman but the entire cast is pretty diverse (Michaela Coel!!!) and it’s critical of white edgelords. Dark moments balanced with funny!
Firefly: (tw: sexual harassment in one episode, sex worker phobia, Joss Whedon-ness) I think this one is more well-known; a small space crew travels the solar system taking on any weird jobs they can get. Two leading WOC, a black man, one interracial relationship.
Avenue 5: (tw: some dark humor, language) Star Trek meets the Titanic. Funny! I’ll leave it at that. 3 leading WOC, a canonically pan main character in a poly and interracial relationship.
Black Mirror: Be Right Back: (tw: grief, partner loss) a woman’s SO dies and she simulates his resurrection through a software that scans his social media accounts. This one isn’t diverse but it’s an hour of Domhnall Gleeson, if he’s your thing!
Stargate: (tw: 90s/00s racism/sexism) tbh I haven’t watched most of the content but I’d say it’s on par with a Star Trek kind of thing. SGA stars two or three POC in a cast of like 7 regulars.
If you liked PACIFIC RIM:
Black Mirror: Hang the DJ: (tw: none that I can recall) a man and woman fall in love via dating app. It doesn’t have monsters, but it’s an incredibly charming episode that exhibits some of Black Mirror’s best qualities imo and I think people who like the Raleigh/Mako dynamic will like what these two have!! Interracial relationship between a black woman and a white man; black woman is blink-and-you-miss-it bi, but still canonically bi.
Cloverfield (tw: violence/blood, frequent flashes, shaky cam): found-footage flick about aliens attacking New York. Basic and not too diverse but it has the huge monster appeal and I like the found-footage aspect.
Edge of Tomorrow: (tw: VB) Groundhog Day alien apocalypse. it’s Tom Cruise buuuuut you get to see Emily Blunt at her most “I’ll end you”-est so like? Worth it I think??
Arrival: (tw: child loss) aliens come to Earth to offer something to the humans. A little slow, but definitely a different take and some cool-looking aliens.
The Host: (tw: child loss) A girl gets kidnapped by a huge river monster. it’s in Korean and all the characters are Asian. Directed by Bong Joon-ho and starring Kang-Ho Song and Bae Doona!! Plus environmentalist commentary.
If you liked MARVEL and DC:
Misfits: (tw: sex, language, violence, rape) imagine one of those superhero teams like the Avengers except they’re all criminals who’ve given up on life and don’t actually care about making the world a better place. Chaotic stupid energy. Two black leads :)
Push: (tw: a few bloody scenes) Chris Evans before Cap?? Dakota Fanning before Twilight? Secret government experiments and black ops superpower organizations? You love to see it!
Fast Color: (tw: past drug use referenced) superpowers that pass down from generation to generation in a family of black women. Need I say more? Need I say any fucking more?!?!
Sense8: (tw: child loss, grief, lots of nudity and sex, drug use, language, infidelity) 8 people around the world start experiencing each other’s lives and borrowing each other’s skill sets. This is probably THE most intersectional and diverse show I have ever seen. An international cast and setting that reaches almost every continent, leading trans lesbian, multiple QPOC. Truly incredible and one of my absolute favorites.
Jupiter Ascending: (tw: bees) I actually don’t really like this movie but I do think it has its appeal and I appreciate how much it is just unabashedly itself. Don’t take it too seriously! The cast is kinda wild too--Mila Kunis, Eddie Redmayne, Sean Bean, Channing Tatum!!! And it’s by the Wachowskis, AKA the two trans sisters who did The Matrix and Sense8!
If you liked THE HUNGER GAMES:
Gattaca: (tw: implied body modification, trichophobia, eugenics) in a society that discriminates against genes, a man with a heart condition assumes another’s identity in order to achieve his dream of becoming an astronaut. I love this movie. It’s very moody and soft with a really compelling dynamic between the two leading men which I’ve always read as gay.
Snowpiercer: (tw: VB, minor cannibalism) yet another winner from Bong Joon-ho, who’s surprised? All of humanity lives on a train in which all the cars are stratified by class. This is my favorite of all the movies from all the Chrises. Evans is by far my favorite Chris for this!!! It also features Octavia Spencer and Kang-Ho Song! Piping hot class war tea pre-Parasite.
V for Vendetta: (tw: torture, I don’t remember a lot of the details sorry!) I haven’t watched this movie in a minute so I don’t remember how much I actually liked it, but I thought it was worth mentioning because it’s a classic dystopian movie.
Children of Men: (tw: infertility, childbirth, VB) humanity has lost the ability to procreate for 2 decades until one day a resistance group discovers a pregnant woman. Holy crap so much extremely relevant and prescient commentary on immigration, race, class, and refugee crises!!!
Akira: (tw: disturbing imagery, objectification, nudity) I don’t really remember this one much either? But it’s Japanese, there’s biker gangs, and it’s super weird.
The 100: (tw: VB, kill your gays/POC trope, suicide, torture, child loss) 100 juvenile delinquents are dropped onto Earth and chaos ensues. I think most people know that this show is plagued with issues but it really does have a special place in my heart and I think it changed the conversation and standards re: the treatment of wlw in genre fiction. It starts off cheesy and slow but the stakes are SO high all the time and it’s full of thought-provoking ethical dilemmas.

hey, hiii just wanted to ask about your thoughts/opinions on shadows character
Do you mean like.... Overall or how it’s been handled lately?
It also kinda depends on which version of Shadow. I mean, obviously from my set of 4 Shadows I have on my desk, I love him.
SO I guess we need to break it down.
Sonic Adventure 2 Shadow: I love this silly edgelord. He’s basically a teenager who’s also woken up from a really long nap. Have you ever had nap brain before? Because it sucks, and I like to think that’s part of why he’s so grumpy and also why he had so many memory problems. He might have been out of cryostasis, but his brain was still waking up. He’s moody, he’s probably going through hormone swings because, you know, teenager, and he’s trying to figure out where he stands in the world. This is the Shadow I was first introduced to when my cousin had the game system and I was watching him play it. I literally made my mom buy me a gamecube and the game because I wanted to play with Shadow. I’m always late to the game with stuff. I mean heck, I only just now started playing Sonic Forces and that’s been out since 2017, but this game REALLY impacted my view on the Sonic franchise.
Shadow in Shadow The Hedgehog: Okay so I know a lot of other people really hate his depiction in this game. They don’t like the idea of Shadow going THAT edge and liking guns and all of that stuff due to his PTSD with Maria. But honestly... I don’t mind it that much? Because there’s the whole thing about him having amnesia again or whatever. And what’s more interesting to look at from this game’s point of view is that, just like a lot of other things in the Sonic Franchise, it’s an AU. This is a choose your own adventure where you can literally decide if Shadow is going to freak out and go down the villain’s path, stay neutral and do his own thing, or realize that he needs his friends and go down the hero’s path. So even if you’re not super into him using guns, you could still have him go down that hero path and find his true self. Plus this thing has one of the most bangin’ theme songs Shadow’s ever had. Like all of his themes from games are pretty awesome, but I personally LOVE this one. Especially the extra m e t a l version by Little V.
Shadow in other games: He can be kind of hit-or-miss in the personality department here. You’ve got him in Sonic Heroes with amnesia... again. And possibly being an andriod. But honestly I love that “date to die for!” scene because it’s so dramatic! You’ve got him in Free Riders for some reason being willing to help Rouge get money in the race even though he’s never actually been willing to help before. In most games he’s just kinda sorta... there, and it feels like the writers don’t fully know what to do with him if he’s not the main focus of the game. There’s one big exception to that though:
Shadow in Sonic 06: The game everyone shits on, mostly just because of some of the graphics being shitty here and there in the actual gameplay and also the whole “Sonic hooking up with a human chick” thing. However, this is one of the best characterizations of Shadow. He cares about his friends, he gets given the support he needs, and in turn he also winds up giving that support to Silver. You know, after giving him a boot to the head. As bad as this game might have been, we did actually get relatively good character development for some of these characters, and Shadow was one of them. His willingness to do his part and take Silver “under his quills” as I’ve seen other people say, properly shows off his compassionate side rather than him just.... being dark and brooding. You know?
Boom Shadow: Eeeeh.... I’m not totally sure how to feel about this one? I love listening to his voice for sure. I like watching his fight scenes. But it feels like they’re making him edgy just for the sake of being edgy. And he’s really easily manipulated? I feel like, while Boom has done some great things with other characters, Shadow has gotten the short end of the stick. He’s kinda bland most of the time when it comes to his actual characterization, and he’s boiled down to a one-note kind of guy. So like, I don’t hate it but I really think I could do better.
IDK comics Shadow: They kinda did the same thing here. Shadow started out pretty darn great in that scene with Sonic and deciding what to do with Mr. Tinker. Seeing Sonic get under Shadow’s skin about it and making him back down was a great way of showing how the two have really gotten to understand each other over the years and that Sonic knows Shadow better than he’s willing to admit. That’s where my praise ends. Shadow then basically disappears until we get him back being stubborn as hell and jumping right into a pit of zombots and BOOM, just like that he’s taken out of the game. We’ll see how things go once this virus thing is over (because honestly I feel like it’s been lasting waaaay too long.) and if they use this to humanize him a bit more or if they keep him being super stubborn and one-note. But yeah, as of now I’m not super happy with how he’s been handled.
Shadow in the Archie Comics: HOO BOY I SAVED THE BEST ONE FOR LAST. And by best I mean worst. Where do I even begin with this one? Let me start by saying that I haven’t read all of the Archie comics yet. I’m working on it now, and I’m reading them somewhere online because they’re expensive as hell to get a hold of. But dear lord, this writing is usually horrible! Some of the writers work well together while others *cough*kenpenders*cough* don’t bother to read each other’s stories or will get pissy about their own plotlines not going anywhere and others having to fix them. Shadow is... yanked around so heavily in this series. In some stories, he’s great. He shows interesting characteristics and shows that he’s learning and growing. In others he’s just kinda.... there. In others he’s going completely against what he’s learned and is treating people like shit unless he’s manipulated to do otherwise. One of my absolute biggest complaint about the Archie series is: Tyrant Overlord King Shadow, from the 25/30 years later arch. It’s so bad, you guys. *disgruntled noises* Ken Penders basically had Shadow do a complete 180 despite everything he’s ever learned. He forcibly married Sally, became a tyrant of a king who ruled with an iron fist, and when Sonic kicked his ass and threw him in another stasis tube and he was brought back later, he unleashed this weird Tikal/Chaos creature out into the world to completely destroy it after feeding her so much chaos energy that he hurt her. Also the writer completely freaking forgot to actually END that story. Sonic and the New Freedom Fighters defeat and re-seal away “Tichaos,” but there’s no closure as to what happens to Shadow. It’s just Ken Penders going: “LOOK MY SUPER SPECIAL AWESOME OCS JUST SAVED THE DAY.” And it’s like.... okay, but what about Shadow? Did he escape? Is he still in the castle? Is there a second part to this? And sadly, that’s as far as I’ve read with that line and I don’t know if it got any further before they had to do the reboot. So yeah, Shadow is kinda shafted in these comics too.
Overall: I think he’s a really great character with a lot of wasted potential. He tends to shine more when the spotlight is fully on him because in that case, the writers realize they need to work on him more. But when he’s a side character, they boil him down to one-note and that’s really not a good thing to do with any character. (I should also note that I haven’t actually gotten to purchase the DLC yet of Shadow’s story for Sonic Forces, so I’ll need to go and watch the cut scenes before I can properly say anything on that particular game.)
The Sonic Franchise suffers overall from a case of: Too many characters. Now I wouldn’t change that about them, especially this late in the game. However we’ve been introduced to so many characters that none of them ever really get their chance in the spotlight anymore. Another artist that I can actually compare this to is actually VivziePop. She designs a LOT of characters for her works, and she puts so much effort into them that they all come across as “main character material” and completely overshadow the actual main character of the story. The biggest time that has impacted her work was in her comic Zoophobia. The main character was some human chick thrown into the world, but then she spent so long establishing all of the almost hundred characters she’d made for the world that the story itself felt like it de-railed. She’s gotten a bit better with Hazbin, but Charlie still gets really overshadowed. Some of the Archie comics got to be the same way. They had introduced so many characters at that point that they needed to do storylines that didn’t involve Sonic, and Ken Penders himself didn’t really like writing for Sonic because it was so restrictive, where as he had a lot of free reign with the other ones he’d made or that weren’t the main character. So he just kept making character after character to throw in there, and that combined with the characters we got from all of the assorted media over the years means a lot more characters to try and focus on. So the ones that don’t get their prime time in the spotlight just kinda never go anywhere. Also Shadow not being the main precious blue boy probably explains why his writing can be so wibbly-wobbly depending on the media he’s in. Because Sega isn’t breathing down anyone’s neck anywhere near as heavily as they are for Sonic.
I should probably stop typing now because I’ve written you a novel. XD
TL;DR: I love Shadow but he gets the shaft more often than not by the writers.

a BnHA playlist/fanmix thing
@psqqa so I finally put together a list of some of my BnHA playlist tracks! this is by no means comprehensive because I have literally half a dozen different playlists with different themes (e.g. “instrumentals”, “BakuDeku”, “songs that either remind me of Kacchan or that he would work out to”, “angsty apocalyptic final battle”, and so forth) and omg it’s a lot. but this is my most inclusive playlist, which consists of general character theme songs for most of class 1-A, the League of Villains, and a few others. my taste in music generally leans towards alternative/indie/rock/grunge, but it can kind of go all over the place. so the genres may vary here and there, especially since I opted to go with whichever song I felt fit the character best regardless of how well the tracks all blended together musically.
also I have a bakudeku bias but THAT’S NOT EXACTLY BREAKING NEWS what can I say. and this is actually me holding back lol but oh well.
Deku - Rise (Katy Perry) - “makeste did you really just kick off your BnHA playlist with a Katy Perry song” yeah I did! because!! I won’t just survive/oh you will see me thrive/can’t write my story/I’m beyond the archetype. like, this song was made for anime protagonists. oh ye of little faith/don’t doubt it, don’t doubt it/victory is in my veins/I know it, I know it. this kid just doesn’t give up. this is no mistake, no accident/when you think the final nail is in, think again/don’t be surprised/I will still rise.
bonus: Blood (Archis) - this song is fucking gorgeous both musically and lyrically. don’t let them win/don’t let them get/under your skin, into your head/they’re full of it/you’re full of life/you’ll prove them right if you’re giving up/so let’s go for blood. it really is fucked up how dismissive BnHA society is of anyone who’s quirkless. it’s so stupid too, because the majority of quirks aren’t even all that great. “look at me I can make DSLR lenses pop out of my body!” lol fucking great. so obviously superior to normal people who have to take pictures with actual cameras like fucking scrubs. anyway, so Deku was written off from a young age as helpless, defective, and deficient, all because he lacked a quirk. so it’s been so fucking great to watch him finally prove them all wrong. (...by getting a quirk. lol. but STILL.) well it sure took a while to turn it around/but I never gave up on me.
Bakugou - We Will Rock You (VonLichten mix) (Queen) - I like this version of the song because it adds a bit of an extra oomph and it’s a little bit fiercer. anyways, this has been my Bakugou theme song since day one, and what I love about it is that each verse works for a different stage of his ~journey~. buddy you’re a boy/make a big noise/playing in the street/gonna be a big man someday -- this is Katsuki as a fearless young child, with hints at the growing chip on his shoulder (kicking your can all over the place). and then the second verse is him a little older, starting out at UA -- buddy you’re a young man/hard man/shouting in the street/gonna take on the world someday -- and proclaiming to the world that he’ll be number one. and lastly we have the final verse, with its line gonna make you some peace someday, which I know is meant in a make-peace-with-things-before-the-end kind of way, but in a BnHA context you can totally tweak it to be a reference to the man he’s aspiring to be. gonna make you some peace, because he’s gonna be greater than the Symbol of Peace himself someday.
bonus: Defy You (The Offspring) - the wind blows/I’ll lean into the wind/my anger grows/I’ll use it to win/the more you say/the more I defy you/so get out of my way. perfect song for a boy who cannot and will not be stopped. you cannot stop us/you cannot bring us down/never give up/we’ll go on and on. or, in his words: “I will win... that’s what heroes do.”
All Might - Legends Never Die (League of Legends OST) - listen I have never played League of Legends lol, but ever since I heard this song in a Marvel edit, this has been the All Might song for me. you could probably just watch the Kamino battle on mute with this song in the background and everything would fit. legends never die/when the world is calling you/can you hear them screaming out your name?/legends never die/they become a part of you/every time you bleed for reaching greatness/relentless, you survive. the lyrics basically speak for themselves. we stan a champion.
Aizawa - I’ll Make a Man Out of You (Mulan OST) - y’all I went through so many songs looking for something that summarized Aizawa’s tiredness/doneness-with-life while also alluding to his mentor side, and then suddenly BAM, it hit me. anyways so yeah. you’re the saddest bunch I ever met/but you can bet before we’re through/mister I’ll make a man out of you. also just try to listen to the “say goodbye to those who knew me/boy was I a fool in school for cutting gym/THIS GUY’S GOT ‘EM SCARED TO DEATH” part without picturing 1-A bitching about their scruffy teacher overlord whom they secretly love.
bonus: I’m So Tired (Fugazi) - if you’re looking for something more musically cohesive with the rest of this playlist in general, as opposed to SUDDEN DISNEY SONG OUT OF NOWHERE, this may be a bit more up your alley lol. I’m so tired sheep are counting me/no more struggle, no more energy/no more patience/and you can write that down/it’s all too crazy and I’m not sticking round. anyways Aizawa needs a nap.
Todoroki - Alive (Sia) - I grew up overnight/I played alone, I played on my own/I survived/I wanted everything I never had/like the love that comes with life/I wore envy and I hated it/but I survived. guys this little candy cane boy has been through some shit. but he hung in there and now he is thriving. I’m still breathing/I’m alive.
Ochako - You Gotta Be (Des’ree) - because she’s a badass. you gotta be bad, you gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser/you gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger/you gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together. anyways I sure would like Ochako to get the spotlight in an arc again one of these days. she’s the best.
Iida - Never Die (FNDTY) - it was actually pretty hard to find a song that fit Iida’s unique forty-year-old man personality since my musical tastes usually run towards moody shit and he’s pretty much the opposite of that lol. but I think the tempo of this song fits his quirk, at least, and it makes me smile, which he does also. you can run/you can fly/you can never die.
Kirishima - Guts Over Fear ft. Sia (Eminem)  - so this is a song all about overcoming your insecurities and finding the courage within yourself. I freaking love how the pre-chorus I was afraid to make a single sound/afraid I would never find a way out builds up and transitions into so here I am and I will not run/guts over fear. I’m so proud of Kiri you guys.
Momo - You Are Young (Keane) - another song about getting the better of your personal doubts and demons! hey now, don’t be scared, baby, don’t be scared at all/of all the things you don’t know/you’ve got time to realize. Momo has so much potential and she’s going to be such an incredible hero one day. now that she’s gaining more confidence the sky is pretty much the limit for her. you’ve got time/you’ve got to try/to bring some good into this world/cause you are young.
Mina - Safe and Sound (Capital Cities) - oh hey it’s the most upbeat song in the world, for the world’s most cheerful and optimistic and endlessly delightful person. I could fill your cup/you know my river won’t evaporate/this world we still appreciate/you could be my luck/even in a hurricane of frowns/I know that we’ll be safe and sound.
Kaminari - Thunderstruck (AC/DC) - okay yeah maybe I didn’t try too hard on this one lol. BUT IF THE SHOE FITS and honestly, it does. title aside, I think this song fits Kaminari musically too. it’s badass and it puts a smile on your face. went through to Texas/yeah Texas/and we had some fun/we met some girls/some dancers who gave a good time/broke all the rules/played all the fools. and then, of course, the chorus. you’ve been thunderstruck.
Jirou - Dream On (Aerosmith) - you know I had to go with a rock song for Jirou, so might as well go with a classic that’s all about (a) loving music (sing with me, sing for the year/sing for the laughter, sing for the tear) and (b) shooting for your dreams. dream on, dream on/dream until your dreams come true.
Tokoyami - Dark Necessities (Red Hot Chili Peppers) - I could have possibly gone with something a bit more goth for Toko as opposed to the Chilis, but the lyrics just fit so well though. you don’t know my mind/you don’t know my kind/dark necessities are part of my design/tell the world that I’m falling from the sky/dark necessities are part of my design/do you want this love of mine?/darkness helps us all to shine. Tokoyami doesn’t get enough respect for being a teenage edgelord without being a cringey mess. he’s setting such a good example for others.
so that’s pretty much it for my 1-A songs, but here are some bonus BakuDeku songs because I am obsessed
Muddy Waters (LP) - this is my theme for Deku VS Kacchan 2. goddamn Katsuki is such a hot fucking mess during this fight. and he’s hurting so much, and he’s reaching out to the only person he knows to reach out to in the only way he knows how. I will ask you for mercy/I will come to you blind/what you’ll see is the worst me/I’m not the last of my kind/in the muddy water we’re falling/in the muddy water we’re crawling. this song brings that good angst you guys. this is a relationship that has been through the wringer, and two boys who have basically no idea what they are doing, just kind of stumbling along. it is not clear why we choose the fire pathway/where we end is not the way that we had planned/all the spirits gathered round like it’s our last day/to get across you know we’ll have to raise the sand. anyways these kids chose the highest possible difficulty level for their path forward, but they’re doing it though. together, y’all.
Admiration (Incubus) - because Izuku is frankly infatuated and doesn’t even try to hide it. you’re an unfenced fire/over walls we’ve trampled/it’s you I admire/my living example. “an amazing person who was even closer to me than All Might.” he’s so open in his respect and awe for practically everything Kacchan does. just staring at him in starry-eyed wonder. and this part of their dynamic has always been so compelling to me -- how unconditional it is on Izuku’s part. that is some fiercely strong love there on his part that it can survive all the bullshit Kacchan heaps onto it, and all his best attempts to snuff it out. he just latched on and wouldn’t let go. anyways it resulted in something extremely unhealthy for quite a while, but it’s turning around now and being reciprocated, even if Kacchan’s version is prickly and tentative. don’t get ahead of me/could we just this once see eye to eye?
Ordinary Love (U2) - I can’t fight you anymore/it’s you I’m fighting for/the sea throws rocks together/but time leaves us polished stones. I fucking love that metaphor, though. yeah, just give them time. they’re gonna figure this all out one day.
and have a bonus theme song for class 1-A in general before we move on
Charlie Brown (Coldplay) - something about this song just embodies that restive, fidgety energy of youth to me. all the boys, all the girls/all that matters in the world/all the boys, all the girls/all the madness that occurs/all the highs, all the lows/as the room a-spinning goes/we’ll run riot/we’ll be glowing in the dark. there’s like a disorderly, disheveled beauty to this. say what you will about Coldplay, but some of their songs are like the musical equivalent of a rainbow.
anyways so now I’m gonna segue into some songs for a few of the season 4 characters. starting with...
Nighteye - While I’m Still Here (Nine Inch Nails) - ticking time is running out/yesterday I found out the world was ending. I still can’t get over how psychologically devastating Nighteye’s quirk is. it’s basically just Major Bummer: The Quirk. this season is really going to fuck me up emotionally isn’t it. a little more/every day/falls apart and/slips away/I don’t mind/I’m okay/wish it didn’t have to end this way. fucking hell. guess I better brace myself for some solid gut punches to the soul.
Eri - Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) (Florence + the Machine) - nothing to see here, just a little girl being treated as nothing more than a human bloodbank, and told that her quirk is nothing but a curse even as her abuser hoards it and uses it to wage a war. this is a gift, it comes with a price/who is the lamb and who is the knife?/Midas is king and he holds me so tight/and turns me to gold in the sunlight. but I also picked this song for Eri because of the way the POV slowly gathers up their courage and tries to fight back. I wish that I could just be brave/I must become a lion-hearted girl/ready for a fight/before I make the final sacrifice. excuse me I need to go hug Eri.
Mirio - Carry On (fun.) - okay so it was kind of hard to pick a song for Mirio, I think maybe I was overthinking it. anyways I ended up going with something hopeful to try and embody his endless, determined optimism. this song has kind of a quiet courage that builds up as it goes on. my favorite part is the second bridge: cause we are/we are shining stars/we are invincible/we are who we are/on our darkest day/when we’re miles away/so we’ll come/we will find our way home.
bonus: Mirio and Tamaki - Kids (Acoustic) (OneRepublic) - back when we were kids/swore we would never die/you and me were kids/swear that we’ll never die. lol at least we have one healthy childhood friendship to stan in this series.
and now on to THE VILLAINS, yay. this is probably the most musically cohesive section of this playlist, since VILLAINS!! means I can go with an overall darker ambiance.
All for One - Sympathy for the Devil (Neptunes Remix) (Rolling Stones) - didn’t even have to think about this one. please allow me to introduce myself/I’m a man of wealth and taste/I’ve been around for a long, long year/stole many a man’s soul and faith. this is the gentleman villain song and a perfect fit IMO.
Tomura - Pet (A Perfect Circle) - or really, this is more “AFO and Tenko”, I guess. manipulating a traumatized child into hating the world and raising him to become a killer. pay no mind to what other voices say/they don’t care about you like I do/safe from pain and truth and choice and other poison devils/see, they don’t give a fuck about you like I do/just stay with me/safe and ignorant. this is one of those songs where literally the entire song fits both lyrically and musically. just perfect. I’ll be the one to protect you from your enemies and your choices, son/they’re one and the same/I must isolate you/isolate and save you from yourself. like it’s a struggle here not to quote the entire song. ...eh, one more. swinging to the rhythm of the new world order and/counting bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums.
bonus: Flesh and Bone (Black Math) - Tenko angst. god that last arc was so fucking good. I walk alone, beside myself/nowhere to go/this bleeding heart that’s in my hands/I fell apart. stupid manga with its darkly compelling villain character arcs.
Dabi - Shadow on the Sun (Audioslave) - aaaangst lol. and I can tell you why/people go insane/I can show you how/you could do the same. p.s. Dabi you still owe me a flashback! also “shadow on the sun” is a pretty good metaphor for his relationship with Endeavor. fire quirks make for such great metaphor potential.
Toga - Bones (MS MR) - you know I really have no idea why this song pings me so hard for Toga lol. but whatever, it is what it is. marinate in misery/like a girl of only 17/man-made madness/and the romance of sadness.
Twice - Misfits (Third Eye Blind) - my people are the misfits/the ones that don’t fit in. this is another song that clicked pretty naturally without requiring much thought on my part. well those are the ones for me/yeah those are the ones for me/the misfits, the freaks, the enemy/you and me.
Spinner - Normal Person (Arcade Fire) - is anything as strange as a normal person?/is anyone as cruel as a normal person/waiting after school for you/they want to know if you/if you’re normal too/well are you? this song is such a burn on quirk society and all of its issues. I can’t tell if I’m a normal person, it’s true/I think I’m cool enough/but am I cruel enough? I especially love the ending -- if that’s what’s normal now/I don’t want to know.
and a bonus League of Villains song:
Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Tears for Fears cover) (Lorde) - just change “rule” to “destroy” I guess lol. help me make the most of freedom/and of pleasure/nothing ever lasts forever/everybody wants to rule the world. god I love this cover. this is one of those songs I’ll play over and over again anyway so it’s nice to have a good excuse what with the direction this new arc appears to be headed in.
and lastly, a couple of Hawks and Endeavor songs because they don’t really fit in any other section and I didn’t really plan out this post!
Hawks - Weapon (Matthew Good) - just a really nice, angsty theme for the man who goes too fast, off on his spy mission of doom. careful, you be careful/this is where the world drops off. plus some bonus angst about how he’s trapped in this role that he never wanted to be in. and you give in/and you give out for it/ain’t it so weird/how it makes you a weapon.
Endeavor - Find My Way (Nine Inch Nails) - lord my path has gone astray/I’m just trying to find my way/wandered here from far away/I’m just trying to find my way/you were never meant to see/all those things inside of me/now that you have gone away/I’m just trying to find my way. I don’t really need to comment more on this, do I? also, the part where Trent Reznor’s voice drops to a whisper and says please/I never meant for this, though. omg. Endeavor you’re such a bitch and you had all of this coming, but even so. oof.
and that’s pretty much it! she said, like this post wasn’t long af as it is lol. anyway so there are... 34 songs here, lol. I should probably try and put it all into a youtube playlist or something for convenience. I’ll edit once I’ve done that.
edit: playlist!

Summer Anime 2019 Part 3: comic relief
Tumblr media
7seeds
❓ Some terrible people wake up in the post-apocalypse, having been apparently selected for the survivor job without being told so. They do stupid things and are mean to each other for no reason.
❌❌ This is apparently based on a respected manga. I’ll guess the adaptation is not doing it right because nothing makes sense and every character is either a jerk or a blob that keeps getting picked on by jerks. Character drama, you see.
❌❌ The pacing is completely shot both ways, because this rushes through all explanations for anything and still barely has anything happening. I am informed this has to do with cramming ~18 volumes of manga in 12 episodes, which would explain it.
❌❌ Netflix sure knows how to pick ‘em, because apart from being nonsense, this also looks like a moderate production disaster right at episode 1. If you want more, you can watch the rest right now. Well apart from the other half of the manga, which they’re apparently banking on a sequel for. Now that’s comedy.
❌ Apparently this only gets worse as it goes along, which may be at least a bit more funny. I doubt it’s worth it.
Tumblr media
Bem
❓ A tough cop starts getting into supernatural troubles. Meanwhile some supernaturals get into cop troubles.
✅ This actually does mostly fine as far as the cop procedural end of it is concerned. It has a nice, moody atmosphere and particularly good music.
❌❌ However, the rest of it is a remake of a 60s supernatural shounen and boy is that obvious. It’s like someone crammed a (bad) episode of Gegege no Kitarou into the middle of an episode of The Wire, and it shouldn’t be a shock that this does no positive things to the tonal consistency.
❌ Not to mention that I don’t want to watch a (bad) episode of Gegege no Kitarou to begin with.
♎ It doesn’t look very good either, though that doesn’t really matter. It would be fine if the rest was fine, and as it is it barely registers as a problem compared to the other ones.
❌ Even if you’re interested in a moody cop procedural just for the rarity of it, you can just watch Cop Craft this season instead.
Tumblr media
Given
❓ A rock band meets a creepy stalker that can’t play guitar. Naturally, he joins in short order.
♎ This is very much a BL show, so it’s pretty neat to see that nobody’s raping anyone in the first episode. Lack of being terrible is not exactly a positive, but hey. I’ll take it.
❌ The problem is just that this is a romance and I don’t like Mafuyu, the spectrum-tastic creepy stalker who’s described as  a “puppy”, which seems somewhat charitable. The rest of the characters are honestly fine, but that’s a big minus.
❌ It also already has a tendency to oversell its big emotional moments and impending backstory drama.
♎ So yeah, it’s the rare BL TV show that’s only on the level of a regularly bad anime romance. Knock yourself out if you must.
Tumblr media
💩 Cheat Magician
❓ 💩
♎ For something that is textbook 💩, I’ll admit that this at least has a somewhat agreeable tone. Not that “everyone is super nice” is a selling point, but it lacks the sour whining of an Arifureta or Shield Hero. Dude also brings his osananajimi along for the ride, which is ultra lame but preferable to quite a few of the alternatives.
💩💩 Well, given the extremely clumsy writing that makes up this first episode, I’ll just assume that this is due the author being too amateurish to suck properly. There is no flair to anything and every sentence is a flat statement of exposition. The pacing is awful too.
💩💩 Fundamentally still of its genre, which means it’s a pure power fantasy with tons of lampshading of its own terrible nature. Hax powers and lots of barely clothed natives confirmed.
💩 Looks are as thoroughly uninspired as everything else.
Tumblr media
Machikado Mazoku
❓ Poor (as in not wealthy) and dim (as in not bright) demon girl gets tasked to defeat a magical girl. Local magical girl would rather be friends.
✅ Hey, this is a pretty funny concept and it gets a lot of mileage out of this odd-couple pairing too. It has snappy pacing and while a lot of the jokes don’t land, the majority do.
♎ Leans a bit too hard into repetitive jokes, in particular the ones about not having any money. That’s just not where the funny is in this setup. Overall it just shows its 4koma nature a little bit too much.
✅ The main character is voiced by Kaguya-sama’s Chika and this show can get quite a lot of second-hand awesome from that. She does it less in episode 2, though.
♎ It’s probably the best purely cute&comfy blob show of the season, because Dumbbells didn’t manage to stand the 3-ep test for me (short version: it didn’t actually develop a story and is just a series of fundamentally boring tutorials)
Tumblr media
Your Mom Online
❓ 💩
✅ I can’t pretend that a 💩 is not a 💩, but as far as clowning on the genre goes, this is pretty good. The idea that your overbearing mom came along for your ride and is hogging all the glory is properly terrifying, especially for the target audience.
✅ This is probably the funniest isekai spoof, which just means it’s better than Konosuba (which seemed to do very little to question its subject and basically just was a standard isekai where everyone is really stupid). In particular it shows a healthy disregard for worldbuilding and logic, which is a godsend (in a comedy).
💩 Still, it’s an anime comedy which means that a lot of the jokes just don’t land. Especially the fanservice-based ones are more cringeworthy than hilarious.
💩 This seems to have some designs on being more profound in the long run, which i find questionable on principle.
♎ What can I say, it’s the first isekai-related thing in a long time I didn’t completely hate and I’ll give it a chance based on that alone.
Tumblr media
a certain edgy meme
❓ I’M ACCELERATOR / NICE TO MEET YA
❌ So the Raildex universe’s premier edgelord got himself his own show, and it’s quite shocking to see that he’s only the second most annoying thing in it.
❌❌ That crown would go to Misaka Misaka or Last Order or whatever the fuck, a tiny Misaka that narrates her own lines. Please.
❌ Apart from that it seems to be Railgun, which means it’s a lot of wacky goings-on, a lot of bizarre characters of very uneven quality, a lot of desperate sciencebabble, and a lot of action that’s not quite as cool as it wants to be.
❌ If I ever wanted to get into Raildex, I’d start with Railgun. If you already like Railgun, I suppose you’d like this too.

50 Thoughts Everyone Has Playing Call of Duty: Ghosts for the First Time
I have arrived, fashionably late, to this game which is now four years old. Here are a collection of live Discord comments made in real time, put together in sequence.
1) Start up screen music is a bit gloomy period drama, Imho  Like, is this the video game adaptation of Wuthering Heights?
2) Okay. This is deffo sounding like some goth shit.Oh. Gameplay  is starting!!!!
3) Ooh. It's all gone a bit Akira.
4) Ah. We are now at the traditional Call of Duty running and jumping level.
5) There's a war on, but that doesn't mean a man can't sculpt a decent set of sideburns #heshlifelessons
6) IF YOU WANTED ME TO HOLD THE HELICOPTER IN THE LINE OF THE LASER JUST BLOODY SAY THAT!!! I swear that took five minutes to work out.
7) See, if I imagine the dog to have a Cockney accent, it just turns into Gaspode.
8) Also, I kind feel that Hesh bears a resemblance to someone? Who was that guy in Modern Warfare again? You know, this guy:
Tumblr media
9) I'm on a derelict bus in I Can't Believe It's Not Pripiyat and Hesh just told me to bite someone's bum.GROWL. SCUFFLE. SCREAM. Such stealth. So kill. Wow.I am a good doge.
10) You know, this game would probably be a lot more fun if there wasn't all this IRL chat about building walls to keep South and Central Americans out of the US.
11) Time for another level of Call if Duty: Goths
12) Pretty impressive sniffing out Ajax through all the CS gas and old hot dogs. Good doge.
13) I'm still not entirely sure why we are now in a baseball stadium driving a car that's on fire.It must have been love at first sight.
14) It's stabby, barky shooty time again! This time we're playing the Totally Not Defending The White House level
15) Riley is Ramirez 2.0 really.
16) Ooh. Jarod from Storage Wars turned up in the helicopter.
17) OoooOoooOooh! Big reveal!
18) "Dad! DAD! You're one of them!" "And I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for my own pesky kids!"
19) Every time this map loading screen comes up with the black ink effect I'm like, "Rourke! Ex Ghost. Commander of Federation Forces! You will board my helicopter, cross the wall and restore the heart of Ti Fiti"
20) "Rourke? I was just a lieutenant back then..."
21) Twelve years wear out of that black bandana? That's value for money there.
22) "Look for heigher ground!" "What like that multi storey car park we just ran past?"
23) Okay. I'm intrigued to know why Ramos knows where Rourke sleeps? #ishipit
24) I'm going to try a level of Call of Duty: Daddy Issues.
25) I'm not saying it's entirely a rip off Modern Warfare, but blowing up a dam the grounds of disabling all forces might give yours an advantage is very similar, if a little more low tech, than using a nuke to create a big ol' EMP over the Western US.
26) Ok, we're in Caracas now and Hesh Keegan is doing his best moody modern Batman crouched on a paraphet above the city. Goth level: exxtra
27) Oh my God they just did the Batman thing where when he's got the mask on his face is not painted but when the mask comes down: sudden panda eyes!
28) Cannot legit believe Hesh just shouted "You tried to kill my Dad!"Someone needs to have a word with him about infosec
29) Have we ever been in a building in this game that has not been falling on us?(edited)
30) Can we stop with anybastard can fly a helicopter thing?
31) Also, is it just me or were the instructions for this game less than fucking obvious most of the time?
32) Attempting Call of Duty: Linkin Park again!
33) "Make sure you catch Rourke alive!" Chucks him out a window fifteen minutes later
34) Alright edgelords, enough with the flowery torture prose. Why is "torture a man until he becomes one of us" such a popular trope?
35) Ok, I know I shouldn't, but I laughed when you stab the guy in the Jeep and when he slumps forward, the horn gives a little toot.
36) Oh it's the "Help! Help! My brother is hurt!" routine.
37) Also, why am I responsible for placing all the defences??
38) Disadvantages of the "enemy uniforms" and generic white dudes scheme is that I've just followed some rando around this car park.
39) Oh. An oil rig level. How original.
40) Oh. A snow blizzard level. How do they think of all these new ideas??
41) Kicky kick! Kicky kick! Kicky, kicky, kicky, kick kick!
42) When you got to animate Call of Duty at six, but Reef Diver 2 at nine...Lot of love went into this level
43) I feel like I'm in the ocean zone of the Crystal Maze.
44) Oh God Rourke is annoying.
45) It's quite hard to shoot straight with doge whining plaintively in my ear...
46) Lot of people shouting "PUSH!" Is this a battlefield or a labour ward?I like the bookending of the game narrative with the use of the orbital weapons
47) Annnnd all done!
48) Oh FFS! That can fuck right off.
49) The actual sequel is their Mum turning up and rescuing them, co written by Guillermo del Toro and Rhiannon Pratchett.
50) Played by Helen Mirren with Joanna Lumley as her sidekick and everyone is lured into their trap of helpless old lost ladies, and then the knives get pulled out. Someone legit gets stabbed with a knitting needle. There's a grenade hidden in a parrot handled umbrella. They crochet their own balaclavas

headcanon::::: Jericho is,,,,,strangely really really strong?? Everyone is super surprised and no one understands because he's short and scrawny and has lived on a mountain for nine years but. here he is. fuckin throwing robin like a rag doll and picking Kyd Wykkyd up like he's -20 pounds. Jericho, personally, blames Wilson Genetics. (forgive me I ship Joey and Kyd and am incapable of sending anything that doesn't involve them)
listen man,,,,, he can blame wilson genetics all he wants,,,, but he lives on a MOUNTAIN u cannot be WEAK to live on a MOUNTAin
he’s just one of those kids that even when they’re strong af it doesn’t show like, at all. and he doesn’t work out, he simply carries out his daily chores, like .. lugging stones around for construction projects.. and walking up and down the mountain for supplies.. and
joey and kyd? i think i’ve seen mentions of that ship places, seems like a nice ship tbh i’ll look into it, for now have some random scenarios i just thought up for u
so , strong. once he was visiting kyd and some baddie showed up in a jump scare fashion and moves towards kyd in a threatening manner, so joey just pounds them across the face without a second thought. the baddie goes down in one hit and even joey is a little surprised because he’s usually not a physical hitting kinda person
joey likes to carry his bf, he always gets this small soft smile whenever he gets to and kyd loves that smile so he Suffers for him lol (it’s gotta be embarrassing for the Moody Dark Edgelord)
once he was sparring with robin and they were getting really into it, the rules were only hand-to-hand so joey can’t use his abilities and robin can use his.. tools/weapons and joey ends up literally throwing robin across the room and that’s how the titans learned that robin worked better on staggered ground with room to jump in and out of fighting (……….like batman).
AND ONCE KYD AND JOEY ARM WRESTLED and by now most everyone knew that joey was Strong Af and kyd is .. well, not, so they all expected kyd to lose but then kyd leans forward and kisses joey , hard, and it’s such an un-kyd-like thing to do that joey so shocked that kyd managed to get his hand to the ground in one swift motion dhflaskhflksdjf i can’t handle my own headcanons
anyway i may not know much about him but i love that stronk soft badass boy

I have no idea how you headcannoned the reaper x reader ask so accurately 😂 I actually do call people meanies! (Sorry if I request edgelord too much I just really enjoy your portrayal of him) I was wondering if you could please write a oneshot of reaper's s/o calling someone a meany and edgelord coming over to defend her? - shy anon
XD I would love to try. I’m glad you enjoyed the headcanons
“Wait here,” Reaper said quietly to you, leaving your side. The two of you had been called back from the date night the two of you were having because the top branch of Talon needed a word with Reaper. And by date night, it meant the two of you were watching horror movies back at your loft and snuggled together while you were in pajamas.
Despite what most people thought, Reaper did know how to be normal sometimes. And yes, he was definitely dark and moody most of the time but with you, he was possessive and always held your hand, loved watching spooky movies with you alone on days off, and enjoyed going on walks in the evening with you away from others.
Eager to return to what you two had been doing previously, you waited anxiously, leaning from foot to foot in the corner of the lift off bay.
Two Talon members who were going by glanced at you, before snickering quietly. Seeing them do that made you feel a bit sad. You weren’t a Talon member here, and most of them looked down on you. You’d heard some whispers about them thinking Reaper was going soft because of you, and that you were tarnishing a good commander.
“Can you believe that he really lets that pipsqueak in here?” you heard one of them mutter, the two on active patrol and making sure the lift off bay was secured.
Shaking his head, the two either didn’t know you could hear or they really didn’t care. “Honestly, he isn’t much of the commander he was a year ago,” the other agreed, and the two sent a sly look at you.
You were kind of sick of it. What right did they have to act like that?
Storming over, you tapped on the shoulder of one. “Excuse me!” you said with a scowl. “I can hear you”
One of the two men sneered, pushing your shoulder lightly. He was a good foot and a half taller then you, but you’d always been rather short. “Does it look like i care? You shouldn’t be here in the first place,” he said.
“But I am because I have permission and the two of you are just being incredibly rude!” you said with a scowl. Being looked down upon, both physically and metaphorically, was always an annoyance.
“Look, little girl! I don’t give a rats ass, you hear me? Your just a short, unattractive little brat. The fact that out of everyone, the boss is giving YOU his attention literally makes NO sense!” snapped the second man, who loomed over you menacingly. The two looked pissed and honestly, the harsh way with which they talked to you had you swallowing back tears.
Eyes growing wet, you glared at them angrily. “Your both just a…a bunch of meanies!” you yelled at them, reaching up to wipe a tear away.
The first man’s lip curled in disgust. “Did you seriously just call us ‘meanies’? What are you, two? Your going to cry now?” he said sarcastically.
Even as the two continued to make fun of you, neither noticed the cloaked figure walking up behind them, nor the fury that radiated from him. It was clear that Reaper had heard just enough and the way his hand twitching toward his belt was not a good sign.
“I wouldn’t…wouldn’t say anything else if you want to live…” you sniffled, rubbing at your eyes as you looked up at them. Though you knew that Reaper was protective enough that these two wouldn’t be walking out of here alive if you were crying.
“Why, what are you going to do?” one laughed.
“It isn’t what she’s going to do,” rasped a dark voice full of anger. Instantly you could see the two men go rigid, paling at the sound of their commanders voice. “Its what I am going to do that you two should fear.”
The two turned quickly, and you could see instantly the two realized how deep of shit they were in. One even peed his pants and trembled, the other’s knees quaking slightly.
“B-boss, i can explain-” the first rushed, but a bullet sent him sprawling on his back. It seemed he had died instantly, blood pooling around on the floor. Instantly you covered your eyes, not wanting to see.
Turning to the one who had peed himself, Reaper’s eyes seemed to stare into his soul, which was filled with terror. “Leave, before I throw you to Widowmaker for target practice. And the next time any one of you question me or speak to y/n like that again…I don’t need a base full of men to take down Overwatch. I am a one man army. You are insignificant and easily replaceable,” he hisses, before letting the man run out of the hangar.
Once the man was gone, Reaper stepped over the body and went to you, dragging you close into his arms and shielding you from the bloody sight behind him.
Sniffling, you looked up at him and let him wipe the tears from yours eyes. “They’re a bunch of meanies, Gabe,” you whispered, snuggling against his chest.
With a rumble, Reaper silently nodded his agreement and lifted you princess style, taking you home without further delay.

NAME: Cicero Farsalor NICKNAME: Starboy, That Damn Cat™, Smoky, way too many pet names from over the year AGE: 20 SPECIES: Kishka - Russian Blue HEIGHT: 5'9”
NOTES: Cicero Farsalor, a friend to all and an entertainer by trade. He comes from a long line of Kishka descendants but his parents were anything but supportive. So a whole dark past and an official emancipation later, Cicero moved out on his own at the age of 16. Living in a run down efficiency apartment and unable to keep his flighty head centered for a job or school, he did what any kid in his position would do. He ran away to join the circus. Figuring living in a traveling caravan and accepting community would easily trump living in a leaky box of an apartment. (That would soon be out of his price range once he hit the ripe age of 18 anyhow)
Upon barking for his new found home, encouraging patrons of an entirely new town to come and see the brilliant Land’s End Circus… He met a fellow feline, a moody edgelord named Caige who had decidedly ran away from home. During a few twist and turns, Cicero called Caige a “friend” and this “friend” followed him into the circus life thereafter.
Land’s End has made Quellarin its next stop in their travels. Potentially a longer stay or a permanent fixture, the details are unclear to Cicero but adventure is always available to those who seek it.
Cicero has curly dark silver hair that is almost always styled like he just woke up and piercing aqua-green eyes. His coloration merely lightens in turn when he is in his Russian Blue form, his build muscular and a little larger than a household cat’s might look.
Face Claim: Nicholas Fols

Mutants: Edgelord Supreme
March 20, 2017
Getting started writing is always the easy part. It’s the keeping at it until it’s finished that’s the super hard part.
I could probably list about a hundred stories that I started and never finished. Some of them had super cool plots, really well thought out characters, even amazing settings and circumstances, but for some reason, inspiration would just fizzle out. I think it was that I lost a lot of motivation after the first few stories, which is why after a while I just started writing one-shots and short stories. (Until Transcend, that is.) But it wasn’t college or even in school where I learned to write well.
It was on Neopets.
Honestly, I haven’t even heard the name Neopets spoken out loud in like, five years. Every once in a while, it comes up on tumblr, but apparently it’s so so SO different now. I don’t even know if I’d like it anymore. Originally, when I signed up, it was because the eyries were dope as hell. Then I found the roleplay boards, and I was a goner.
Okay, starting at the beginning.
I’ve always been a great reader. The summer before kindergarten, I got grounded, and as I spent the week in my room, I taught myself how to read. (I think is was Amelia Badelia, if I remember right.) By first grade, I was reading the Harry Potter series, and when I was in third grade, I was reading at a college level. (Not to toot my own horn, but I was a big nerd.)
I think a lot of me being able to write well (at least in my own opinion and my Creative Writing teacher for a semester in high school) comes from being able to read the harder books. At a younger age, I was reading those complex sentences and words and learning how to make things sound good. (That last sentence is a terrible example of that.) Combine that with an imaginative mind, and I was writing crazy stories since I was barely potty trained.
I’m shit at grammar, though. Absolutely terrible.
Around third or fourth grade, the internet started becoming a bigger thing, and we had a tiny computer at home that took five minutes to start up. (I remember the good ol dial up days. Fantastic. I was a much more patient person, then.) After getting a McDonalds toy, I logged onto Neopets to see what it was all about. A few months in, I found the roleplaying boards, and was like, “Oh, it’s like writing stories but only with one character at a time, cool.” So I did that. I loved it. Existing in those little stories and creating a new character every time was fascinating, and I did it as often as I could. I had a few recurring characters, and an embarrassing few as well, but I kept at it. When I was ten, I somehow found myself in a roleplay guild with a bunch of college friends, and they believed me when I said I was 16 because of how well I wrote. (That was wild. I had a lot of fun in that guild. Eventually I told them I was going into fifth grade, and then they were even more impressed, and it was cool. Huge ego boost.)
I wrote my first ‘official’ book when I was in fifth grade, and it was called Mutants. It was about these kids who had been trapped and experimented on and given crazy animal-like powers. They escaped the lab and went to live by themselves and it got weird for a bit and the story’s end made no sense at all, but it was cool. It also had a finished sequel, and I think that one was called ‘Mutants 2: On the Run’. (They disguised themselves as normal humans and things got weirder, but it was more well-thought out than the first one.) Honestly, for an elementary schooler, it was pretty good, but looking back on it is downright mortifying. The main character, Flame, is an emo edgelord, and vague as hell, and nothing she does makes sense. And she’s possessed? By something??? And her boyfriend man dude (whose name I have no idea how to pronounce) is basically a velociraptor-human with wings. He’s an emo edgelord as well. He’s constantly like “She’s so cruel but I have to help her but I’m sad but she needs me we’re SOULMATES!!!!!” The only non emo dude is Feng, and he’s a big wolf boy and can’t speak English.
Now that I think about it, Blaise might be the modern day version of the edgelord. He’s so angry all the time, and he wears black sweats every day and he swears like a sailor. Shit, I can’t get rid of him.
I got a bit off track there.
After the roleplay boards on Neopets, I moved onto a roleplay forum-based site and was a pretty high-ranking member because of my coherent posts and because I didn’t try and make every thread about me like everyone else did. And after that, I quit roleplaying and just started writing all my stories out by hand until I could get on my mom’s laptop, and then my own when I got to my senior year in high school. Some of my stories from even two years ago are pretty bad, but they still are leagues better than Mutants.
The point is, everyone has a shitty starting point. Mine was on Neopets roleplay boards. Now, I’m publishing a book about superhero kids. (Full circle, am I right?) But I learned a lot of tips along the way, and I got better. Sure, my writing isn’t like, Jane Eyre or anything, but I don’t think it needs to be.
That’s another point, honestly. Like, yes, my writing is a little more casual and relaxed, but it’s still good. I can do the flowery prose, I can do the crazy extended metaphors and page-long comparisons to galaxies and whatever else people compare love and eyes to, but I don’t think I need to. Not trying to bash those writing styles, but everyone has what works for them and their stories, and I don’t think my stories need super long descriptions about the way “his fingers grazed his arm like the way a gentle summer breeze dances across the top branches of a young sapling”. Like, no. My stories are about superhero young adults who are trying to figure out what the hell is happening in their town. They can focus on each others galaxy filled souls later.
(Or maybe I’ll write some moody side pieces. Those would be fun.)
I lost track of the point of this post. To sum it up: I taught myself to read like a nerd, learned vocab and read stories that no third grader should ever read, and wrote my first trashy action-romance at the tender age of ten. After that, I got better at writing through sheer practice alone.
And I STILL have only finished like, six stories, out of the hundreds I’ve written.
Two of those six are the Mutants stories.
Shit.
