When your name lit up on his phone, it was a welcome sight in the midst of a day that had Spencer feeling down. “Spence, I’m so sorry,” you said. “I’m gonna be stuck at work a little later today. Could you pick Lily up from school?”

“Of course. Is everything okay?” he asked, leaning back against the wall of the empty office he’d taken refuge in.

“Yeah, just a last-minute meeting, it’s all good. How about I pick up some dinner and dessert on the way home as a treat?” He hesitated, and while he was the profiler in the relationship, you’d gotten good at reading him over the years. “Babe, is everything okay with you? You’ve never thought about turning down something sweet before.”

“No, it’s fine,” he said, trying to backpedal. “I don’t know, it was just a stupid comment another agent made.”

“What did they say?”

“Just pointing out that I don’t look the way I did a few years ago. Something about domesticity and putting on weight.”

Agent Hill had once been an assistant agent around the BAU bullpen until his transfer up to the New York Office. A training seminar had him back in the area for the first time in years, and he’d popped by Quantico to make a round of reunions. While he was chatting with everyone and making quips, he’d locked eyes on Spencer. “SSA Reid,” he’d said. “Haven’t seen you in a while! Looks like there’s a little more of you to see, huh? Domestic life must be treating you well.”

Spencer knew it was meant to be some sort of joke, but it didn’t lessen the way he felt suddenly too much, too conscious of the little extra weight he’d been carrying around his midsection since their daughter Lily had been a baby. It wasn’t something that normally bothered him, but then again it wasn’t something other people normally commented on, outside of you resting your head on his tummy and waxing poetic about how comfortable he was.

Spencer pushed the thought to the back of his mind as he drove to the school. Lily was always a welcome distraction from whatever he was ruminating on, but the way the four-year old was frowning in the backseat demanded particular attention. Her answers about her day were short and vague, unlike her usual cheerful self. It wasn’t until they got home that he finally got her to admit what was on her mind.

“I just wanted to finish my book during nap time, but Teacher got mad at me and she said I wasn’t allowed. The she took it for the rest of the day. It wasn’t fair,” she grumbled. “I just wanted to read my book!”

Spencer would talk to her later about rules, and maybe try to get permission from her teacher to let her read instead, but that could wait. Right now he just needed to get his little girl out of this funk.

“So you had a bad day, huh? And you’ve got some bad feelings now?”

Lily nodded, sticking out her lip in a perfect pout.

“Then I guess it’s up to me to turn that frown…” - he snatched her up in his arms, maneuvering her over his shoulder - “upside down!” Holding tight to her he spun them around until she was giggling, her little feet flailing, hands clutching at his sweater.

The moment he dropped her back onto the couch he began to tickle her, ensuring her laughter had no chance to subside. When she seemed to have tired herself out from laughing he finally let up. “That’s much better, isn’t it?” he asked. “I like seeing your smile. So tell me, what would help make these bad feelings go away?”

Lily thought for a moment, pressing her lips together in a thin line the exact way her father did when he was deep in concentration. “Can we make brownies? And maybe watch the Elsa movie?”

“Of course we can.” Both tasks had once been a challenge for him, but he’d learned to make a box mix without burning the house down over the years, and had long since surrendered to the fact that he could not escape the endless loop of children’s movies. While Frozen was ingrained in his memory after the first watch, he learned to tolerate the repeat watches and soundtrack plays for the joy it brought to his daughter. She in fact treated him to her own rendition of the songs while they stirred the brownie mix, her energetic demeanor returning as he probed her with questions about the movie’s characters and what was happening in her favorite books. Just before he placed them in the oven, she insisted on adding handfuls of brightly colored sprinkles into the mix, saying it was a magic ingredient.

Lily insisted on changing into a pair of pajamas with Anna and Elsa on them while Spencer set up a cozy nest of blankets and pillows on the living room couch. He started the movie while the brownies baked, slipping away to take them out of the oven while Anna sang about the impending coronation. With one brownie on a plate and two cups of hot cocoa, he returned to her side on the couch. “Here you are, princess,” he said with a small bow, placing the plate in front of her.

“Where’s yours?” Lily asked.

“Oh, I’ll have one later,” he lied. “After all, princesses have first dibs.” The truth was he hadn’t stopped thinking about Agent Hill’s comment. Maybe it was time to get back in shape, shed the new-dad weight he’d never quite lost. That would mean cutting back on sugar - his favorite of the food groups - and the time he spent lying on the couch instead of hitting the gym.

Lily inched close to him, wrapping her arms around his waist, her head resting on the top of his tummy. Spencer pulled the blanket up over her and draped an arm around her. It was his job to make her feel better, but cuddling with her on the couch was helping to dispel his own sour mood as well.

 “I think Olaf would like your hugs, Papa,” she told him. “You give the best hugs.”

“Is that right?” he asked.

She nodded, the movement tugging his shirt. “Yeah. I like hugging you. You’re soft.” That kernel of shame swelled up again at the comment only a child could make with such innocent bluntness. “And warm. Good for snuggling. You’re like a teddy bear! I love teddies, but I love you better, Papa.” As if for emphasis, she squeezed him in a tighter hug.

That bit of shame immediately began to melt at her words. Lily continued, her eyes never leaving the screen. “Cuz you can do all the things a teddy can’t, and you make brownies with me and you carry me when I’m tired and you’re the most comfy ever. That’s why your hugs are magic.”

They sat on the couch, Lily enraptured by the movie on the screen, and Spencer ruminating over her words. Warm, soft, good for snuggling. Wasn’t that what you were always saying too?

“Papa, are you going to eat a brownie?” Lily asked. “I put the sprinkles in so they’d be extra good!” The puppy dog-eyed pout was another expression she’d picked up from him, and he just couldn’t resist this time. Maybe he didn’t need to. He ventured back into the kitchen, returning with three brownies on the plate. She watched as he took the first bite.

“You’re right!” he told her. “These are the best brownies I’ve ever had!” And they certainly were when saying so produced such a huge smile on Lily’s face. She returned to her position snuggling up with him and he was content to indulge in the sweet treats before them. So maybe it wouldn’t help with the problem of his tummy, but maybe it wasn’t such a problem after all. How could it be when that softness was something his daughter and partner found endearing? If his hugs could make Lily happier and eating desserts was a moment he could share with her, why would he want to change that?

His body was proof of the thing he was proudest of in his life - being a dad. A dad who was always there, who loved lazy weekends snuggled up with his family and treating Lily to sweets she always offered to share with him. He loved that he was someone his daughter felt safe with, that his arms could offer comfort on the bad days and the good days and all the days in-between. 

When you returned home, you found them like that on the couch watching the end of the movie, Spencer caught red-handed with a brownie in his hand. Lily rushed over to greet you with a hug, happily babbling about her day as Spencer quickly finished the brownie before walking over to join you.

Distracted by the closing credits, Lily wandered back to the couch to sing along while Spencer welcomed you home with a kiss.

“Mm, you taste like chocolate. So you’re not still upset about that comment today?” you asked.

Spencer shrugged. “I don’t want to cut out the things that make life sweeter. Lily says my tummy makes me good to hug. Like a teddy bear. How could I give that up?”

You smiled. “She’s right, of course. I mean, I liked hugging you even when you were practically a bean pole. But you are much more comfortable with a little extra padding.” You gave his belly an encouraging pat. “And it’s nice to have more of you to hold onto.”

So his cardigans were a size larger these days, and he had to buckle his belts a couple notches looser than he had before. But those were signs his life had changed, his world had grown, filled by the presence of so much love and sweetness. Maybe there was a little more of him now, but he didn’t care so long as he had a little more to love in his life.

You met Joel pretty much like everyone else did in Jackson: by knowing he was Tommy's older brother and listening to several stories of his terrible, ruthless past

Which didn't bother you at all because as you lived in the fucking apocalipse not many things fazed you and you knew surviving took a lot of questionable actions and sometimes people just had to do what they had to do

He very much kept to himself, contrary to the young girl that always tagged along with him, who didn't shut up one second and always seemed impressed or excited about something

You couldn't lie, you thought that was very sweet

But you didn't understand how father and daughter could be so different: she was a chatty box and he mostly just groaned and grunted or hummed in approval

And then you learned they weren't father and daughter, because the two of them were very quick to state that, though it was also sweet that everyone saw they were father and daughter regardless of what they said

Ellie - you'd learned her name - was very sweet despite her sailor's mouth and you two often got along once you began teaching her how to bake; it was just a simple, ordinary story, you lived on the same street in Jackson and one day she happened to pass by right when you were baking cookies and the smell of it just drove Ellie insane

To the point she had no shame in knocking on your door and asking you what was that you were making and then she tried your cookies and she was doomed, because from that moment on she would do anything she could in order to eat some of those delicious treats

She told you she was tired of eating Joel's shitty food and you sort of scolded her because you knew he did his best, but if she didn't like it she could learn how to make her own

Ellie told you she didn't exactly know how, so you offered to help her and teach her how to cook and bake as much as she would like

Joel didn't resist it because he knew she would be busy and safe during the day and also because he would be the one testing her new food and recipe, which he didn't oppose

Your official meeting was when Ellie had already had a few classes and she asked if she could use your kitchen to make dinner and invite Joel to see if he would actually approve it or not

But in fact it was a lie, she had just noticed how he stared at you and how you blushed whenever he talked to you, so she figured if you two were too dumb to get to know each other, she would have to give you two some help

But it worked, after having dinner at yours, Joel enjoyed it so much he kept making up excuses to come back and before you could realize, you and Joel were in a relationship together

Things were getting more and more serious and you loved him more and more each passing day, and the same for Joel, for a man who thought he wouldn't be able to love again, there he was: madly in love with you

So it was just logical you would move in together

And while Joel was out working around down or in patrols, you were very often taking care of the house

You and Ellie became baking buddies and every single day there's something fresh and sweet at home for your handsome boyfriend

You and Ellie got so good at it you started baking goodies to sell in the neighborhood or exchange for favors and products, making it a nice income for the two of you

How does Somi feel about Mingyu?:

I believe Mingyu was someone Somi had a crush on before in the past and now her feelings for him are coming back to the surface. I feel that she feels very conflicted right now. Mingyu could be in a relationship with another woman and that is preventing her from being able to confess how she feels. Somi doesn't like to feel like the other woman and even though she's trying to move on from her feelings for him, she can't help but feel drawn towards him. "Ah~ I'm stupid🥺😭." This is something that makes her emotional to talk about. Somi could have liked him for a while now? Maybe since she was young? Her dad disapproves of this relationship with him. Oh wow, so Somi's dad didn't want her to be with him because he feels Mingyu would interfere with her success. The age gap was a concern as well. Her father could have also not wanted her to be sexually intimate with Mingyu and told her this 💀 Somi has the tendecy to be "boy crazy" or fall in and out love very quickly. So because her dad saw her heart broken before, he's protective of her, although, I can also see that he heavily relies on his daughter to help support the family financially. So from a business standpoint, he can be controlling at times and pushes her to get over what she's feeling so she can get back to work. (Channeled song: Love Story by Taylor Swift) Despite what people think of her dating history, Somi feels like Mingyu could be a true love for her. She wishes she could of told him about how she felt sooner.

How does Mingyu feel about Somi?:

(Channeled song: Next Lifetime by Erykah Badu). Mingyu could also feel what's happening in this connection and feels attracted to Somi. He could also like how free Somi is when expressing herself. He wishes for freedom himself right now and is no longer wanting to be tied down by this person he's currently in a relationship with. Mingyu could of signed an NDA possibly? Or some sort of legally binding contract. This person he's dating won't hesitate to sue him if he breaks the contract. Maybe she's famous? Or works for a famous company? I'm getting that she's a older woman or she has a sensual image. Mingyu is reflecting on his current relationship and how he feels about Somi. Mingyu feels like it's too late for him and Somi to try to be with each other. He's not as willing to fight for this relationship as much as she is, but is open to the idea of the possibility of them being together. Mingyu is most likely going to split from his current partner soon but he doesn't want to jump from this relationship into another. He just wants to have fun and enjoy his youth, similar to Jungkook's energy for his "Seven" promotions.

What is the dynamic between them?:

They have a past life connection and they were meant to meet again in this lifetime as well. I feel like they aren't supposed to be together and if they do date, it will only be short term. Somi and Mingyu are supposed to learn from each other, to grow from this connection. They both acknowledge that they are special to each other. Somi and Mingyu will treasure their relationship and the memories they had made even when they no longer see each other. This connection is very bittersweet.

What will happen for Somi? Will she find someone else to fall in love with?:

So it's gonna take for Somi to date Mingyu to actually get over him. Once she tries to be with him in a more serious and committed relationship. Somi is gonna see that they aren't as compatible as she thought they would be. She could decide to end the relationship on her own terms and realizes her self worth or what she wants in a partner. Somi will meet someone closer to her age or a few years younger. She could get married to him in the future and start a family. So Somi will get her happy ending :)!

What will happen for Mingyu?

Once they break up, Mingyu could feel embarrassed or wonder what he did to make Somi break up with him. He's going to miss her once she leaves. She will teach him a valuable lesson. I think they are both karmic soulmates for each other. It will take some time for Mingyu to be interested in dating again. He could meet someone online? Either by social media or through a dating app. This person is his type. She could be similar to the older woman he dated as in having dark hair or a seductive presence but she will be close to his age or younger than him. Mingyu will remember what Somi taught him and he will be finally be prepared to meet his romantic soulmate.

ZEUS

he's her father, but she doesn't call him "dad". i think Zeus would probably faint on the spot if she did (out of love), but he just hasn't been there enough in her childhood for her to develop a father-daughter relationship with him (and i don't think that's Zeus' fault).

still, she knows that he is her father, and she respects that. but i think she mostly just sees him as her King. i mean, most of Zeus' children do.

initially, i think she's super pissed when she learns that Zeus has "sold" (quotes because he kinda did, kinda didn't) her to Hades, but i definitely think most of her anger was at Hades, so Zeus sort of escaped with that one.

anyways, after Hades and Persephone are married, and she becomes a Queen, she would interact a lot more with Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, and Amphitrite, and i think she learns to hold herself with the same rank as them.

that's tricky because Persephone is sooo much younger than all of them, and they all have so much more experience. it can be intimidating. but slowly, Persephone learns to hold her ground and acknowledge that, yeah, she is a Queen also, and she can disagree or agree with her fellow rulers, and she isn't a child anymore.

so i think she becomes closer to Zeus after marrying Hades, and although they never quite get to that father-daughter stage, they are very close, and i don't think Persephone has any hatred or anger for Zeus.

HERA

they have a really good relationship.

Hera and Persephone and Amphitrite all get along SUPER well on account of them being Queens and having to put up with an unholy amount of bullshit.

Persephone is always extremely cordial and generally lovely, and has been like that since before she married Hades, and i think she and Hermes are the only two of Zeus' extramarital children whom Hera actually tolerates, and, dare I say, is affectionate towards.

like how Ares, Hephaestus, Hebe, etc. are very much nieces and nephews of Demeter, Persephone would be very much a niece of Hera's, and she would treat her like that.

when she gets married to Hades, i think the relationship becomes a bit more formal, but also more interactive because Hera would see her a lot more.

in my Demeter and Hera hc's, i mentioned that Hera helps Demeter come to terms with Persephone leaving for the Underworld, so i think Persephone appreciates this aspect of Hera that encourages her to be ambitious and pursue a life for herself.

POSEIDON

hmm. not really any relationship? i said that Demeter and Poseidon don't get along, so i don't think Persephone and Poseidon would get along either.

Persephone is, however, very close with Demeter and Poseidon's son, Arion. i imagine Arion to be a pitch black stallion, and if he was to communicate, he could do so "telepathically". i'm putting that in quotes because i don't want that to sound like Arion's going "what up, Seph??!" to Persephone's mind or anything like that.. i mean, he doesn't speak, he can't talk, but the way he moves himself, or creates an expression on his face... you can understand what he's saying by his body language. and Persephone, as his "sister", having grown up with him, would be able to read those facial expressions so easily, it is effectively as though Arion could speak.

before Athena was born, everyone thought Persephone was the oldest, so i like the idea that they are close having both held the "elder sister" role amongst the younger Olympians.

however, my hc is that Persephone is already married by the time Athena breaks free from Zeus' skull, so they don't interact as much as they could have.

they are good friends.

ARTEMIS

i can't see them interacting a whole lot.

i do have a hc that Artemis invites Persephone to join her and her Hunters, but Persephone doesn't really want that so she just politely declines.

APOLLO

obviously originally asked for Persephone's hand, which of course, she turns down.

HERMES

adores Persephone. initially also asked for Persephone's hand, but after getting rejected, they become good friends.

Hermes sees Persephone the most because he's also a psychopomp so he's in Hades all the time.

Hermes constantly worries about Persephone getting kidnapped, so he's always coming in to check in on her.

i like the idea that when Persephone leaves Hades to stay with Demeter, Hermes travels with her (if he has the time).

HEPHAESTUS

third guy to ask for Persephone's hand and get rejected.

ok, so i do like the idea that Hephaestus was as arrogant and full of himself as the other Olympians up until he met Athena and got schooled. so, because Persephone comes to Olympus before Athena is "born", he, naturally, would have tried to woo Persephone same as everyone else.

naturally, Persephone doesn't want to get married to ANYONE, so she's like "im sorry, but no".

anyways, Hephaestus and Persephone get along well. i have a hc that he crafts for her two little metal flower hairpins for her wedding to Hades.. it's hard for plants to survive in the Underworld, but this flower, made of metal, will last forevermore... so it's like a small little reminder of where she comes from while she rules over the Dead.

i have a hc that Persephone gives one of these pins to Aphrodite when she comes to Olympus and gets married to Hephaestus-- just as Persephone lived a sheltered life and all of a sudden was thrust into a marriage with a stranger in a strange world, so too was Aphrodite pulled from her shell in the sea and thrust into a marriage with Hephaestus, whom she did not really know, in Olympus, a place she did not really know. so Persephone's gift of the hairpin is symbolic a) of Hephaestus' thoughtfulness that he showed to Persephone, and b) that Aphrodite is not as alone as it seems-- she has friends, and Persephone is one of them.

ARES

fourth guy to ask for Persephone's hand and get rejected.

they are also on good terms, i think this is largely because Aphrodite and Persephone are friends and so, by association, Ares and Persephone are also good friends.

not too much else to say though.

DIONYSUS

again, i'm not entirely sure how to characterise their relationship. i haven't thought enough about it.

i suspect that they get along well.

APHRODITE

they are friends and rivals. they're always visiting each other, and eating together. i like the idea of Aphrodite visiting Persephone in Demeter's home, and comparing Hades being down in the Underworld with Ares being away in wars... i think they bond over this separation that they have with their spouses.

at the same time, both goddesses have been renowned for their great beauty, and even though i don't think Persephone is vain, she doesn't like being compared to Aphrodite,, and i think they do get a little competitive at times (not Hera or Athena-competitive, but in a playful, friendly fire sort of competitive way).

i think part of the reason why Aphrodite sends Psyche to collect Persephone's "beauty" is as a playful slight to Persephone hee hee, as though her beauty could simply be boxed up and given to the next person.

it's funny, i recently had a similar discussion with folks on discord about mia getting to her own version of the epilogue. i think people generally want me to say that she's okay in the same way that people want(ed) JKR (obv. pre-JKR becoming awful) to tell them that george was "okay." this sort of comfort of: we know they've been through a lot but they're okay, please-tell-me-they're-okay, you know? and i remember JKR was always a bit like "😬 is he, though?" realistically speaking? i think that's how i feel about mia too.

on discord, about her epilogue, i said:

i think her epilogue in my head is maybe a bit more… bittersweet than other people's epilogues. cause i think (and this is totally my headcanon, you can see it differently), she has a lot of good things coming out of this. she’s able to establish boundaries with her parents in a much healthier way, she learns to trust herself and stops being such a people pleaser, she learns that she doesn’t have to do everything alone, she has an amazing career - all those things made possible by her character evolution while she was with harry. but there’s this bittersweet aspect of: i think to her, he is and will always be the one that got away. and the kind of love story they had, at the age she was (20/21), those are the things that just stick with you, you know? and i don’t think she regrets anything she did/decisions she made, but there’s this aspect of: he’s the one she fell in love with, and he’ll probably always be the one she will compare other people she dates to. and that’s just… it, you know? and i don’t think she’s sad forever, i think she has fun and has a good life and maybe even finds another partner if she wants to, but harry is the one she's always going be talking to her therapist about. again, that’s okay, and i feel for her So Much, but i think it does sort of have this impact on her that never truly goes away.

i think to me, when it came to shaping mia's character, it was very important for her to have her own arc, too. of course, she existed in reaction to harry's storyline, and was going to help him realise some things about himself, but i also wanted her to be a person, and to grow in her own way.

at her core, mia is someone who is very lonely. when we meet her, she's in her last year of uni. she's away from home, in an environment that is not her own, and basically has no one who really cares about her. her mother is having a new family (new husband, new baby) and while she loves her, she's also replacing her. this is a detail in chapter 13 but mia doesn't even have a bed in their new house. her father is an absolute arsehole who tries to control her life after being absent for 17 years, and she doesn't really have friends. harry always says she has a lot of people around her, but they're school friends, acquaintances, going-out friends, not people she'd ever actually confide in. when she's starving herself trying to survive, no one notices. she says so herself in chapter 14:

‘You know no one else [cares], right?’ she says, then. Looks up to cross his gaze and takes his breath away. ‘Not my dad, not my mum, not my friends in school where I’m like,’ she speaks quick, rolling her eyes, ‘the token black girl with the funny accent from up North when their parents all know people - bloody Vivienne Westwood or something,’ she sighs. Her voice breaks. For the first time that morning, he hears tears in her words. ‘And, I don’t even hold it against them. They’ve all got objectively more important things than me to worry about. It’s just so fucking lonely sometimes.’ 

i think when i was building her character, i kept thinking about how lonely i felt during my first years in uni. mia isn't a self-insert in the way that i think we're very different people (god, i would have dumped his arse so much quicker), but that's definitely something i wanted to address in castles. in popular culture, we tend to romanticise our early twenties and uni years as the "best time of our lives," but the more i think back, and the more i talk to my friends now, as a grown-up, the more i realise that many of us have this very similar experience of deep loneliness and this feeling of being "lost" in the wild world of early adulthood. it's not just about mia's family, or her friends, or her doomed romantic relationship with harry. what makes her relatable, i think, is this general feeling of loneliness and inadequacy that we've all felt at some point in that time period of our lives. you're in uni, you're sitting there stressing about finding a job, a partner, what life is going to be like once you graduate. add to that that this period of your life is often where you get your first real relationships and heartbreaks, and it makes for a very hard time. and, it's terribly lonely because it's so romanticised that you can't even say it's hard, or that you're lonely, because This Is The Best Time of Your Life and #yolo.

and, with mia, you add to that the fact that she's broke af. like: she doesn't have money for food. in an environment where everyone around her has money. so, she doesn't want to admit how broke she is, doesn't want to ask for help because there is literally no one who would help her, but the financial stress is killing her. and, i think it's very important to consider that the money harry gives her isn't much to him, but to her - she later owes him her life and her career. the thing about financial precarity is, you can tell people to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" all you want, the staple of financial precarity is that you're one major expense away from a catastrophe. people are maintained in poverty because what is a small expense to someone with financial security (say: having to fix the lights on your car for instance) can throw someone else in a cycle of debt that they'll never get out of. the money harry gives her is just enough that she's able to get her head above water, and while he always says it's not about the money - to her, that makes a huge difference. because, she's not only one major expense away from a catastrophe, she's also one minor donation away from being able to live the life she dreams of. she - quite literally - owes him paris. she owes her career to him choosing to believe in her in that moment when it mattered. could she have done it without it? maybe. but there is a high chance that if he hadn't given her the money, she'd probably have drowned, given up and gone back to manchester and had a shit job she hated for the rest of her life. that is terribly important. she'll always be grateful to him for helping her out when no one else did.

and, i think the loneliness is also why she and harry connect on such a deep level, because when they meet, he is incredibly lonely too. not in the same relatable, muggle uni ways but: ginny's left, the "buzz" and the elation of the first couple of post-war months have lifted, the press is saying he's gone insane, it's winter, it's dark, wet. he says it himself when they first sleep together in chapter 5:

Mia dances close; Harry mostly watches, but at around three in the morning, they share another taxi home. The fact that they live in the same building could have been a good excuse, Harry thinks, except that by that point, they don’t really need one. He’s already kissed her, trailed his fingers up her thighs in the club (loud music, smoke; he managed to just smile and not think) so it’s not exactly a surprise when he follows her down the stairs to her flat instead of going up to his. He kind of hates himself for the thought but to be honest, it’s been over two months since he’s last had sex and well, she’s offering.

it's kind of tragic but being "there" and "offering" is most of her appeal, at that point in time. and, it's in reaction to those who aren't there and offering. and so, in those months, they bring each other so much. and of course, it grows into something that is much more than loneliness-bonding. again, to mia, harry is the one who shows her her father is an arsehole. he's the one who believes in her when no one else does. he shows her she can trust people. i think the fact that he insists he cares about her, and will always care about her, even when they're not together, means the world to her. she's never had anyone like that in her life. and, in a strange way, by being an - objectively - shitty boyfriend, he teaches her to stand up for herself. because, not only is she terribly lonely, she's also such a people-pleaser that she never pulls anyone up on their shitty behaviour. she doesn't resent her friends (see above), or her dad, or her mum. when harry says this in chapter 15, it really matters:

‘You’re brilliant,’ he just said, instead. His voice cracked and he felt tears clouding his vision, closed his eyes for a moment. ‘You deserve so much better than this.’ She looked down to her lap, then back up to him. ‘Better than him or better than you?’

the question is rhetorical here and they both know it. harry is important to her development as a character because at the end, he allows her to be like: yeah, i fucking deserve better than you people. for her, that's huge.

but then, in a strange way, i do think she's rather nostalgic about it. because i think she really did love him and just wishes things had gone differently. because again, he's the one person who cared about her when no one else did and that's hard to let go of. i think she - again - has very conflicted feelings about it, which do filter through in the paris fic.

that said, to answer your question (I wonder if harry actually thinks about her and regrets their relationship for actually hurting her): yes, he does. i think that's part of his character evolution too. he knows he Fucked Up and it sucks. he feels very guilty about it. that's why he agrees to be the 'bad guy' in the end, when she basically asks him to break up with her because she can't, and then does it in the most godawful way. he takes responsibility for his behaviour, which is also very important to his character arc. it's very hard to navigate your late teens/early twenties without hurting someone without meaning to. what matters is how you react and own up to it. he struggles, acts like a complete douchebag, but in the end, he owns it. he gives her the story she needs to move on and be like: yes, he cared about me, but he was also an arsehole. he gives her that:

She met a boy who slept with her on and off for eight months and broke her heart, dumped her after sex and punched her father in the face. It's not a lie.

in a very strange way, that's an act of love and care too. it might not be enough for her to completely get over him or forget him, but it does allow her to have mixed feelings and hang onto the fact that she deserves better, which is already a lot.

but yeah, of course he feels guilty. he even says so himself in 15 & 16:

(xv) They talk about Mia, that night. Not that he brings it up, but in light of what Gwenog Jones said, he actually asks if she regrets the dating and the going out. There is no judgement in his voice, he’s just curious, and she says: ‘I don’t know, it’s complicated.’ She asks if he regrets Mia and he wants to laugh - same, yeah. He wonders if perhaps, these were the mistakes they needed to make.

(xvi) It’s a fair question, of course. How he feels about Mia. A couple months have passed. Water, bridges and all that. ‘Still a bit guilty, I think,’ he admits. Winces. ‘You?’ ‘Still a bit jealous, I think.’

so, yeah, regarding how ginny feels: of course, she feels a bit jealous. because she knows that he loved mia and cared about her. and, ginny herself slept around, sure, but love wasn't part of the equation. if you remember, she tried to date someone (early on - from october to january of '98) who she did like (but not yet love) and even told harry about, but then that blew up in her face so spectacularly that feelings never really crystallised. (sidenote: i actually think the matt incident probably had even more of an impact on her than sleeping around because this was the first person she ever put her trust in that wasn't harry (post-amycus) and he dumped her in an extraordinarily dickish way (blamed her for the press, which she couldn't control) and that is also what triggered her to be like: fuck this, they say i'm a slut, might as well be one sort of attitude --- but i digress).

it was really important for me that they both have pasts and insecurities about their respective pasts because -- well, that's part of any relationship, isn't it? like, you should never let it eat you up, but it's normal to feel a bit awkward and insecure about your partner's past at the start of the relationship. and, also about yourself. you really want this to work and not fuck it up. so, like: harry feels shitty about treating mia like shit because he didn't mean to. he feels a bit insecure about the fact that ginny's been with a lot of people before him, and doesn't want to admit it. he feels insecure about whether or not she loves him because she's dumped him once before and, well. she feels insecure because everyone thinks she's a slut and she worries he does too. she feels insecure about the fact that he used to love someone else.

but, the important part is: they talk about it. and, that's how they grow and act adult, and that is what matters. the insecurities are obviously there, but they chat and reassure each other and that's what grown-ups do. it even comes up during the sex in 16 and i love how they deal with it:

‘Merlin, that was -’ she laughs. He laughs, too. ‘Much better than last summer,’ she adds.  He’s got this stupid, self-satisfied, Cheshire cat smile across his face when she finally turns to look at him, so large it’s probably rather obscene, and a stupid (stupidstupid) thought suddenly hits his brain: I’ve had time to practice. He doesn’t say it, but she must bloody read it in his eyes because suddenly, a flash of recognition washes over and he wants to say something - anything - to take back that cringey, gauche thing he hasn’t even fucking said, and he wants to disappear deep - far - into the ground. He thinks back to their conversation at the restaurant, and: ‘Still a bit jealous, I think,’ - it makes his skin crawl. Now, though, Ginny laughs. At him, mostly. ‘Harry,’ she says. ‘Harry, look at me.’  Reluctantly, he does. ‘It’s fine,’ she whispers. ‘Just kiss me.’

there's acceptance there, and love, and trust, and that's what matters.

to anwer your other question: Are ginny and harry sorry that they kissed when harry was in a relationship with mia?

honestly, no, i don't think so, though. i think the kiss is the least of it. it's not about one kiss. it's about Everything Else, really.

regarding mia herself, she might make a cameo at a later date. not saying more. but i don't think she'll come back regularly. she needs to be away from him. she says so herself but this isn't the kind of break up where they can stay friends. it would kill her.

lastly, regarding her father (And what about her father? Will that dickhead ever come back to his senses and treat his gem of a daughter the way she deserves?): i headcanon she goes no-contact with him. you can of course hc different things but imo, that's one toxic relationship she lets go of. she knows harry was right there, and i think she's thankful to him for showing that to her, too.

so, in sum: i think mia moves on. i think she has a great life. i also think her love story and harry are always somewhere in her mind. like everything in castles, it's complicated.

Theory Time: Stella is playing mind games with Octavia (another form of abuse)

In 2x12 (in a leaked clip) Octavia accuses Stolas for using pills to “just to deal with her” as a daughter as a whole.

* However we ALL know that’s not the real reason why Stolas takes antidepressants; 1) Because of the cruelty he had to endure for the last 17 years from Stella and 2) Because he had been flat out rejected AND accused — about something he had no awareness of what he was doing wrong — by Blitz after their so called “date” at Ozzie’s.

• Though to be fair Blitz WAS the one who called Stolas to come to Ozzie’s and instigated the whole thing (it was really Jizzarolli and AssModeus’s fault for calling Stolitz out for sleeping together and humiliating them in the process)

Well, I’m beginning to highly suspect that with all this going on. I think Stella is telling Octavia some untruthful things about her dad (because she knows Stolas is miserable to the max from being married to her and suffering from her cruelty and she must know he still takes antidepressants — after all, she had lived with the man for 17 years straight and would have noticed at SOME point! — so what does she do?

Of course, Stella would take advantage of it!

But for what reason, you ask?

Well, we know that Stella wants to take all of Stolas’s happiness away from him (as much as she possibly can, y’know as abusers do), so, that could even include winning full custody of Octavia — with her lawyers and lying about what a “bad parent” Stolas had been (which is funny because he did most of the upbringing of Octavia, and STELLA was the actual alleged bad parent for doing all this shit, as well as NOT comforting her daughter at a young age after having a freakin NIGHTMARE, but, anyways) she even threatened Stolas, in 2x01, that her (soon to be ex-husband) PAY for it from falling of little grace he had.

* Now, to be honest, I thought when she said this, it was in reference Stolas’s relationship with Blitz somehow, but yeah, I can see how Octavia can have an effect on this as well.

(More so the fact that Stolas sort of depends on Octavia and her presence without feeling lonely and he sure as hell doesn’t want Stella’s company - I mean, come on, why would you with someone like her? I actually don’t blame him)

Jesus…. the guy can NOT catch a break 🥺 (not even before the divorce court date yet! Because Stella’s still giving Stolas SHIT and possibly playing MIND GAMES with Octavia, of all people?! Her own freakin DAUGHTER?!

Actually? I’m not surprised given the way that Cash, Crimson, and Paimon all neglected and abused their sons without any sort of consequence. But yeah sure let’s add STELLA, the person who’s already trying to kill Stolas, to the mix. Not saying that the latter has hit Octavia or anything, yet, I don’t think… but she’s STILL being abused in another way. Something less obvious this time…

Why I think Stella is emotionally manipulating Octavia (subconsciously?):

“Your father is going to leave you behind all for that weird red dickhead (— in reference to Blitz —) and they’re gonna go somewhere you can’t follow them.”

Sound familiar? It’s almost like Octavia had been given the task to rehearse (by Stella’s manipulative influence) this to make it to probably get Stolas to feel guilt-ridden enough to make him stay married — haha! That didn’t exactly work nice try (sarcasm), Stella; you’re still getting your ass divorced, regardless — to the latter (as cruel people LOVE to keep their victims on a leash and bully them to get what they want; to have the person feel hurt and deprived of love etc)

Then again, Octavia is STILL her own person as well so this is just something she feels without Stella’s influencing her (but her mother would probably be whispering in her ear like the devil on her shoulder or something. Maybe. I don’t know I might be reading into this too much)

OR

“Your father is taking pills because he has to deal with you, Octavia, and he doesn’t want to, because you’re nothing more than a precautionary heir to him. Now, is that all? Because I’m incredibly busy right now.” or something like that.

Because if we know Stella she WILL find a way to use her argument with Stolas but twist the words, so to speak, so when he said “you and I were arranged to birth a precautionary heir, nothing more”

And it won’t be hard to get Octavia to be manipulated by that because she’s ALREADY broken; she already thinks her dad is going to leave her behind and run off with Blitz (despite Stolas saying that he would never do that to her, but the anxiety is STILL there, in the back of her mind…

I’ve learned from other experiences (through friends of friends) if you don’t feel loved enough then you’ll listen to the BAD people and, unfortunately, if Stella, is using the “I’m your mother, Octavia! You should trust me!” card…

Yeah, that’s not going to end well for her (or Stolas for that matter, IF he finds out about the possible emotional manipulation that’s going on)

The worst part is? We don’t KNOW (I’ll admit that much to avoid the critique behind this) what Stella and Octavia’s relationship is like and EVERY weekend she is staying with her mother; she COULD be poisoning her mind beyond Stolas’s knowledge. He can’t defend or help his daughter if he doesn’t know about it!

Another thing, I would like to point out, is that in 2x02 Stella said to Stolas for him to “stop turning her against me” Foreshadow (or projection lol) much? Because think about it: who does Octavia most likely remind Stella of in appearance-wise?

Mhm. Stolas.

I think Stella knows that she can’t physically — or mentally for that matter — hurt Octavia in the open because THAT is something Stolas would NOT tolerate, in the past would have sacrificed himself any sort of abuse from his wife, just so their daughter wouldn’t

So, I think, I’m my opinion, Stella does it in a way that Stolas won’t know about. And WHAT better time and place to do it, then on a fuckin weekend (since the latter moved out, he can’t really moderate her and see if she’s targeting Octavia or not whether it’s obvious or discreet)

she’s not a ment (#normalgirl), with a pollard score of four, and she kinda.... mocks ments (which is part of why audra ADORES her). having come with her father to work so often as a kid, she’s met more than her fair share of egotistical asswipes

except gray <3 gray is her buddy, her little scrunkly, and she ran more in his circle of friends, which is why she and nick/audra had never met (and why nick felt total betrayal upon learning gray has known her for so long and never introduced them)

when they started dating, saskia made it very clear how much she did NOT want to be in the public eye, so nick kept it a secret from EVERYONE including audra :(( and audra.. did not take this well. at one point saskia came by the house to drop something off and audra answered and could tell something was off and gave nick an opportunity to confess, but he lied and said she was just a friend. so when audra saw the paparazzi photos she exploded (like,, audra is an open book to him and he keeps secrets from her???) and it caused a brief rift in their relationship bc like i’ve said before, audra really struggles seeing other ppl’s perspectives :((

part of saskia’s “arc” is dealing with the massive public scrutiny she faced when their relationship was exposed. it was overwhelming to see such backlash and to deal with a bombardment of photographs and reporters 24/7 and she even started having panic attacks for the first time in her life and this was SUPER foreign to saskia because she’s literally Saskia!! she’s confident !! untouchable !! but not anymore :((

on social media especially lots of justice fangirls acted absolutely insane over her when it became apparent that she’s not just another one of his flings, and in retaliation saskia got super passive aggressive fhjjhsjhs like the you wish you were me on her ig story. her twitter bio is “yeah my boyfriend is justice :)”

the turbulence of their relationship does eventually even out (thank GOD bc that was a rollercoaster) and audra becomes super close with her and everything is sunshine n rainbows !! i mean until nick explodes but, y’know
