because you bet your sweet ass that kaeya talks about his big brother a LOT. he has talked about luc so much, he has probably outright charmed some people with how happy he looked talking about master diluc's business that people have grown intrigued about the dawn winery's owner.

funniest part? he didn't meant to do that... not outright. it's probably the first time he has accidentally manipulated someone just by being his happy self and didn't realized the impact it had.

there are a couple things here where i don't actually remember the events very well because i haven't watched them since they were happening live. so, like, if vitalasy actually described the afterlife differently than he does in this fic, no he didn't <3

the song the title comes from is war strategies by paper bird; however, the song i consider to be this fic's song is shadow song by the mountain goats

do you ever think about the fact that (as far as i know) zam never told vitalasy he made him a grave. do you ever think about this. i do. also that (iirc! again! haven't watched these events since they were happening this past april!) vitalasy never told zam what subz's note said in its entirety. i think about these facts and i become a stick figure gore image

this fic is also nonzero inspired by the 5am red ending of we know the devil. "no, you're right. it should have been one of us. either one of us. i don't care which." lives rent-free in my head whenever i think about vitalasy and zam post-subz's-suicide.

zam asking vitalasy what being dead is like is, obviously, because he also expects to kill himself soon. i figured this was obvious enough to tag it but nonobvious enough to note in the liner notes.

the moon behind vitalasy's head, the half-halo, is a third quarter moon, not a first. i agonized for a while about how to make this obvious in the writing and then gave up--i couldn't get the line about the light being to the left to not be ambiguous between zam's left and vitalasy's left. this is taken from subz's lifesteal stream titles-- 3/29 new moon, 4/15 crescent moon, 4/16 first quarter moon, 4/18 gibbous moon, 4/22 lunar eclipse, 4/29 deliverance (subz's death). expand the pattern outward and you have all of the waning moons taking place while subz is dead.

i have kind of a Thing about "two characters where their relationship is about the absence of a third". you can see this in if this wine hasn't turned to vinegar, in our crooked aim, in how easy you are to need, in here or not here, in sweating out the poison, in whatever a moon has always meant, etc etc. i'm currently working on a wip that is also about this, with two characters i haven't written before!!! i eat that shit up! my favorite relationship or character dynamic is one where i tag a character as "technically not here but their absence is haunting the fic".

i wasn't sure whether to tag it as gen or slash but eventually went with gen. you can read it /r or /p, i don't really care, it doesn't really .. matter? to me? both readings are textually supported. the important thing either way is that they care about each other.

i interrupted myself. anyways. imagine if kaeya was the one to kill you. when he recounts your death, he has allll the grisly details of how you were pinned to the ground by a sword in your throat, almost the same way you’d pin a butterfly to a board. he smiles as he recalls the way your blood spilled onto the ground and the light faded from your eyes. for a moment, he even scoffs at the tears on your cheeks, remnants of the way you’d cried and begged.

and then he gets the news, and it turns out that he truly cannot do anything right. he tries to be honest and loses his family. he tries to redeem his home and dooms himself. he doesn’t bother praying for forgiveness - no matter how kind and understanding everybody said you were, there’s no way you’d forgive a sinner with your blood on his hands.

if we follow my headcanon about the blue blood—that it’s swirly like a galaxy, representative of your power—then it makes sense it manifests alongside your power, and if you blur some lines and squint we can work with that.

anyway i do think kaeya should be the one to kill (that sounds bad) and you. your words man you are so good at this-

he probably wouldn’t pray. and i don’t think, other than the first night getting blackout drunk, that he’d drink, as a form of self-punishment. no, he needs to be awake and sober to truly live through his crimes, for he would only condemn himself more with liquor.

kaeya that stops worshipping at altars or attending service, simply because he doesn’t believe that somebody like him should be in such a holy place. he never takes shifts at the cathedral, and he always takes point on the bloodiest missions. not out of enthusiasm—the sight of blood, even red, now makes him a bit sick—but out of a form of sacrifice. why put blood on innocent hands when he, somebody already sunk to the lowest of hells, can take it?

If you call me at 3pm then we're talking at 3pm for as long as you want (or as long as is practica #l - also assuming I'm not already in the middle of something etc. etc.) #Like phone calls/voice calls/whatever - are so good because it's immediate. no having to go through and spell check. I am also a rambling pe #rson with complicated thoughts and i AM INCAPABLE of having short conversations. no matter how hard I try #you send me a sentence of text and I will write back 3 paragraphs. this makes text-form communication THAT much more taxing and time consumi #ng - whereas I can explain even really complicated things in Real time in like 20 minutes MAX when it would take 1.5hr to type and proofrea #d and etc. in text. ALSO I love that it is a Structured ONE TIME interaction. I know eactly when a phone call will start and can plan for #when it will end. Text form communications are ongoing background interactions with no clear start or end. no structure. etc. #in person/phone/real time communication is just SO much easier for my brain to process and depletes my social energy slower #. it stinks that the entire earth is slowly moving away from the only form of social interaction that is convenient to me lol.. #flat update btw for those who care: this is my first friday night back in the flat since the night i moved in in july— which was a complete #terror because the bar downstairs was pounding music inhumanly loud from 5pm-2am and i had no forewarning or way to block the sound out #so i’ve been apprehensive— and only coming back midweek. well it’s friday night tonight and the noise is completely negligible— #or as negligible as a main road in bristol can be on a friday night at eleven o’clock. sirens and yelling but no pounding music even though #i know for a fact they’re meant to have a d.j. down there #and my earplugs as always are lifesavers :) and i’m getting acclimatised to city noise anyway. it always surprised me last year when i went #home and was reminded of the quiet movement / lively silence of a village— just foxes and pheasants and owls and sheep. and the river #oh i was so sure i was going to have a terrible evening….. instead i sat up late with my closest flatmate and his boyfriend and chatted #while they cooked. i’ve never really spoken to his boyfriend at length like that he’s so nice— reminds me of a friend from back home really #and i think we got on!! i made him laugh that’s good enough for me. and my flatmate clearly loves the bones of him #no wine tonight— i was worried i’d have to rely on it. some tea to take to bed and i might read macbeth on the harbourside tomorrow :) #ah. second year………

'A quick drink' after work had soon turned into two, three, four. Shoko took full advantage of the rooftop bar's balcony, smoking and idly chatting; Higuruma and Atsuya gossipped and quipped, snorting into their drinks; Satoru observed Kento and you keenly behind his dark lens; you stood, excusing yourself to the bathroom as Kento gave you a gentle smile.

"I'm sorry," Satoru interrupted loudly when you were gone, his pot boiling over, "I just-- I just don't get it, Nanami." All eyes were on Satoru and Kento now-- Kento, with one thin eyebrow raised in quiet disdain at Satoru, and Satoru, with his elbows planted forward on his knees in challenge.

A few moments of silence. Kento huffed, "Should I be apologising for someth--"

"--you've been together for years," Satoru interrupted, "and I'm just not convinced. She could be-- she could be a coat rack for all the affection you show her, you're supposed to not be able to keep your hands off her--"

"--you want me to grope my fiancée in public, am I correct--"

"--well maybe, anything to show that you love her--"

Kento laughed out loud, deep and humourless, continuing to chuckle into his glass, scoffing to himself; "Love her," he rumbled, swirling his whiskey, amber eyes flickering and carnal in the firelight.

Shoko had turned, smirking, to watch the scene. Atsuya leaned back, scowling, chewing on a toothpick with crossed arms. Hiromi leaned, glimmer-eyed, into the drama, one hand cupping his jaw and the other clasping his wineglass. He picked up the bottle, slowly beginning to pour another glass.

"I don't love her," Kento spat, downing his glass of whiskey in one smooth swallow, hissing and slamming the glass down on the table, "I worship her. I'm obsessed with her."

Satoru was silent, mulish, as Kento continued.

"I would walk through rains of bullets for her," he mused aloud, "I would cut off fingers with blunt knives--"

"Nanami, alright, I'm sorry--"

"Any second I'm not with her," Kento continued, his voice quieter, darker, the group leaning into him, "is a second wasted. I don't know what point there was in the years I spent without her-- probably just there to build me into even a semblance of the man she deserves--"

"--why are we doing this--"

"-- and when I'm not thinking about talking to her, watching her, being near her, holding her, or-- fuck, just having her look at me goes bone-deep...I spend at least eighty-percent of my time thinking about different ways to make her cum--"

Satoru was blushing now, his face in his hands, while the others leaned into Kento's mild breakdown with awe, "--fucking hell Nanami, I didn't mean--"

The group sat in stunned silence as you returned, sitting beside Kento and laying a hand on his crossed knees. You felt the bizarre tension; Hiromi unable to conceal a blush as he looked at you, Shoko giving you a knowing smile around her cigarette, Atsuya unable to make eye contact. You smiled uncertainly.
