"WIVES AND DAUGHTERS" (1999) Review
Tumblr media
"WIVES AND DAUGHTERS" (1999) Review Twenty-three years have passed since the BBC first aired "WIVES AND DAUGHTERS", the 1999 adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s 1865 novel. And despite the passage of time, it has a sterling reputation as one of the best adaptations of a literary source in recent years.
Adapted by Andrew Davies and directed by Nicholas Renton, "WIVES AND DAUGHTERS" told the story of Molly Gibson, the young daughter of a local village doctor during the last decade of the Georgian era. The four-part miniseries struck me as Molly’s coming-of-age story. She and her widowed father lived an idyllic life until two things occurred. One, her father married a woman she disliked, a former governess named Hyacinth “Claire” Kirkpatrick. And two, Molly fell in love with one Roger Hamley, the science-minded younger son of a local squire. If Dr. Gibson had his way, Molly would have never experienced any coming-of-age. But after one of his apprentices became romantically interested in her, he became determined to keep her in a state of perpetual adolescence. But his actions merely ensured that he would fail. First, he arranged for Molly to become the companion to Mrs. Hamley, the sickly wife of the squire. This gave Molly the opportunity to form an emotional attachment to the Hamley, befriend and fall in love with younger son, Roger. Then Dr. Gibson committed another act that defeated his purpose. He married former governess Hyacinth Kirkpatrick in order to provide Molly with a stepmother. This action backfired, since Molly never warmed up to the selfish and socially ambitious older woman. However, she did befriend the new Mrs. Gibson’s rebellious and more worldly and daughter, Cynthia Kirkpatrick. Not only did both Kirkpatrick women managed to disrupt the Gibson household, but Molly’s relationship with Cynthia would open her eyes to a great deal more about relationships and life in general – both the good and bad. Other subplots abounded in ”WIVES AND DAUGHTERS”. Molly had a first-hand look into the conflict between the loveable, yet impatient and slightly selfish Squire Hamley and his more genteel older son, Osbourne. At first, the Hamleys seemed to regard Osbourne as the key to the family’s return to its former glory. But Osbourne’s scholastic troubles and excessive spending (for a secret French wife for whom he provided a private household) ended up disappointing Squire Hamley. Instead, he transferred his hopes to his younger and more studious son, Roger; who seemed to be on the verge of making a name for himself as a naturalist in Britain’s scientific community. Another subplot centered on Cynthia Kirkpatrick. The French-educated and very beautiful young woman seemed to have struck both the Gibson family and the village of Hollingford with the force of a whirlwind. Cynthia projected a sexuality and worldliness that attracted nearly every male around her – including Roger Hamley. Unfortunately for Molly, Mrs. Gibson’s plans for her daughter included an ambitious marriage to the older Hamley sibling, Osbourne. But when the intensely pragmatic woman discovered that the older Hamley sibling’s health was in a precarious state, she encouraged Cynthia to set her sights on Roger. And considering his feelings for her, Cynthia had no trouble in achieving her mother’s goals with an engagement. Cynthia also had a secret that eventually affected Molly. Five years before, she had become secretly engaged to Lord Cumnor’s land agent, Mr. Preston. The latter’s insistence on a wedding date and Molly’s involvement on Cynthia’s behalf led the doctor’s daughter to become a target of village gossip. Not only is Gaskell’s novel considered a masterpiece by literary critics, but this 1999 adaptation turned out to be highly regarded by television critics and viewers, as well. Some critics consider it to be the best adaptation of a Gaskell novel. Other critics believe it might be a toss-up between ”WIVES AND DAUGHTERS” and the 2007 miniseries, ”CRANFORD”. The 1999 miniseries certainly won its share of television awards. And if I must be honest, those awards were well-deserved. ”WIVES AND DAUGHTERS” provided a complex and in-depth peek into an English village society during the last decade of the Georgian era through the eyes of Molly Gibson. I must admit that I have rarely come across a movie or television series set during the 1820s or the 1830s. And I would certainly consider ”WIVES AND DAUGHTERS” among the best. Screenwriter Andrew Davies and director Nicholas Renton did a marvelous job in drawing the audience into Molly’s world. The setting and story of ”WIVES AND DAUGHTERS” - or at least most of them – seemed to perfectly represent this precarious stage in Britain’s history in which the country found itself balanced between the static world of the Georgian period and the social and scientific upheavals that ushered in the Victorian Age. Davies and Renton manifested this in Molly’s coming-of-age story, which included her father’s reluctance to allow her to develop into an adult and her relationship with Cynthia. The screenwriter and the director also manifested this precarious stage in the relationship between Squire Hamley and his two sons – Obsbourne and Roger. As for the latter, many believe that Gaskell based his character on her distant cousin, the naturalist Charles Darwin who became a prominent figure in the Victorian Age’s scientific community. Davies and Renton also did an excellent job of exploring the in-depth emotions of familial and romantic love in ”WIVES AND DAUGHTERS” also explored the in-depth emotions of familial and romantic love. Molly’s close relationship with her father – fully explored in Episode One – eventually grew weaker due to Dr.Gibson’s attempts to keep her close and at an adolescent stage. I found it interesting that although Squire Hamley grew to adore Molly, he made it clear to the doctor that he would never consider her – the daughter of a country doctor – as a suitable wife for either of his sons. Yet, Roger Osborne ended up married to a young French woman beneath his social station, and Roger eventually became engaged to Dr. Gibson’s step-daughter, Cynthia and married to Molly by the end of the series. Already, Victorian Britain’s social upheavals – at least in ”WIVES AND DAUGHTERS” - had began to rear its head. Cynthia’s love life, which turned out to be the best plotline in the story – also turned Molly’s life upside-down and forced her onto the path of adulthood. The miniseries’ greatest virtue turned out to be the collection of complex supporting characters that gave ”WIVES AND DAUGHTERS” its energy and drive. For me, this was especially true of five characters - Hyacinth Kirkpatrick Gibson (Francesca Annis), Squire Hamley (Michael Gambon), Osborne Hamley (Tom Hollander), Mr. Preston (Iain Glen) and Cynthia Kirkpatrick (Keeley Hawes). When the miniseries focused upon these characters, I found myself fascinated by the story. Each character struck me as so complex that it seemed a pity that none of them was the main character. Michael Gambon won both a BAFTA TV Award and a Royal Television Society Award for his portrayal of the likeable, yet socially rigid and selfish landowner, who seemed determined to return his family to its former glory, via one or both of his sons. I must admit that Squire Hamley was truly a fascinating and complex character. Although I liked him a lot, there were times I could have happily strangle him for viewing his sons as instruments for his familial ambitions and inability to truly understand them at times. Francesca Annis earned a nomination for her portrayal of the self-absorbed and social climbing Hyacinth Kirkpatrick Gibson. One would, at first, be inclined to label Hyacinth as an “evil” stepmother. But Annis’ performance made it clear that Hyacinth was not at all one-dimensional. She also managed to inject a good deal of pathos into her character, allowing one to understand that some of Hyacinth’s behavior stemmed from a sense of survival for herself and her family, due to years spent in the social wasteland as a governess and underpaid schoolteacher. Tom Hollander gave a very affecting and sympathetic performance as the poetic Osborne Hamley, the squire’s elder son who constantly disappointed his father. From other articles and reviews of ”WIVES AND DAUGHTERS”, many tend to view Osborne as a weak and self-involved man. I never got that impression from Hollander’s complex portrayal. Instead, I saw a man whose only real weakness was an inability to admit to his father that he had made a socially inacceptable marriage. It was this weakness that led to scholastic problems at the university and monetary problems. Iain Glen’s Mr. Preston seemed to be the villain of the story – at least on a superficial level. His Mr. Preston tried to coerce Cynthia into honoring her promise to marry him after five years. Superficially, Glen portrayed Mr. Preston as a smug and slightly arrogant man, who seemed obsessed with Cynthia. However, thanks to his complex performance, he revealed to audiences that Mr. Preston had been nothing more than a victim of Cynthia’s capricious and selfish behavior. As for Cynthia, Keely Hawes gave a delicious performance as Molly’s sexy and very likeable stepsister. What I found interesting about Hawes’ Cynthia is that the character possessed a talent for avoiding responsibility for her actions, along with an inability for returning love . . . yet, seems quite capable of winning the affections of everyone around her. Except for Dr. Gibson. The rest of the cast included Bill Paterson, who gave a charming, yet complex performance as Dr. Gibson; along with Barbara Flynn and Deborah Findlay as the Misses Brownings, and Rosamund Pike as Lady Harriet Cumnor, who all gave solid performances. Justine Waddell did a good job in carrying the four-part miniseries and making Molly Gibson a very likeable leading character. Yet, there were times when Waddell’s Molly came across as a bit too ideal for my tastes. Aside from her quick temper, she seemed to lack any real personal flaws. One could name her naivety as a flaw. But that particular state of mind is something the average human being will always experience during his or her lifetime. Overall, Molly was . . . nice, but not what I would call an interesting lead character. Her reaction to her father’s new marriage and her involvement with Cynthia’s problems with Mr. Preston seemed to be the only times I truly found her interesting. I certainly could not say the same about Squire Hamley’s younger son, Roger. In fact, I did not find him interesting at all. To me, Roger was simply a BORING character. Perhaps Anthony Howell was not at fault and did all he could with the role. The actor certainly portrayed Roger as a likeable and compassionate man. But the character was just boring. If I had been Gaskell or even Davies, I would have portrayed Roger as a more complex and interesting character. Or allow Molly to fall in love with a more interesting character. Alas, neither happened. Roger’s only flaw seemed to be a habit of falling in love with women on a superficial level. Due to Molly’s idealistic personality and Roger’s dull one, I found their romance very unsatisfying. Renton handled their blossoming friendship rather nicely in Episode One. However, Roger took one look at Cynthia in Episode Two and immediately fell in love. Worse, he left England for Africa after proposing marriage to her. Roger did not return to Hollingford until past the middle of Episode Four. This left Renton and Davies at least a half hour or so to develop Roger’s romance with Molly and get them married. And how did he fall in love with her? Roger took one look at Molly wearing a sophisticated ball gown and hairstyle (courtesy of Lady Harriet) and fell in love. Ironically, he fell in love with Molly in the same manner he had fallen in love with Cynthia. That did not bode well with me. Many have praised Davies for providing a memorable ending to Gaskell’s story, considering that she died of a heart attack before completing the novel’s last chapter. I would have found it romantic myself, if I had not found the couple’s romance rushed and unsatisfying. I realize that ”WIVES AND DAUGHTERS” is not solely about Molly and Roger’s romance. I also realize that the romance was nothing more than one of the story’s subplots. But that does not excuse what I saw as a poorly dramatized romance that began and ended on a hasty note. I also found the miniseries’ early sequence – Molly’s first meeting with her future stepmother at Lord Cumnor’s estate – somewhat unnecessary. I can only assume that this sequence was supposed to establish Hyacinth Kirkpatrick’s selfish nature and Molly’s dislike of her. Yet, by the time the series ended, I had the feeling that the impact of Molly’s relationship with her stepmother did not seem as strong as I had earlier believed it would, while watching Episode One. Most of Molly's problems seemed to be centered around Cynthia's relationships with both Roger and Mr. Preston. Thankfully, ”WIVES AND DAUGHTERS” has more to offer than just an interesting tale and excellent performances. Production designer Gerry Scott did a solid job in bringing the late Georgian Era back to life in a small, English village. And if I must be honest, I adore Deirdre Clancy’s costumes. I found them colorful and strongly reminiscent of the late 1820s and early 1830s. Cinematographer Fred Tammes did justice to the miniseries’ early 19th century setting. He made Hollingsford look like a very colorful place to live and southern Africa very exotic, yet desolate. I wish I could say that I found "WIVES AND DAUGHTERS" to be a complete delight. But due to a leading female character that I found too idealistic and her unsatisfying romance with a very dull character in the miniseries’ last quarter, I cannot make that claim. And as I had stated earlier, I found the early sequence featuring Molly's first meeting with her future stepmother a bit unnecessary. But the virtues far outweighed the flaws. "WIVES AND DAUGHTERS" conveyed an interesting coming-of-age story, thanks to the leading character’s interactions with some well-written supporting characters. It also provided viewers with a tantalizing look into the changing social mores of Britain, as it prepared to transcend from the Georgian Era to the Victorian Age.

RENTON, Wash. - Simple security measures in a Lake Stevens parking lot may have kept an untold number of firearms off Western Washington streets.GunNation in Lake Stevens narrowly avoided a break-in early Friday morning. This after a group of suspects attempted to use a stolen Kia sedan to break open the front of the building."They ram into these bollards the first time, it didn’t do anything—backs up, tries again, and killed the car basically." Owner Justin Michaud said."The bollards were here mainly just to protect my investment, but also to protect the citizens and the surrounding area of Lake Stevens." He said. The attempt comes just one month after thieves broke into a Monroe gun store in a similar manner, using an SUV to break through the front entrance.READ MOER: Multiple guns stolen from Monroe shop during burglary"All of our firearms are locked up and in safe rooms at night and stuff, anyways," Michaud said. "Long guns are all cabled, so there’s not really much of a way for them to get anything."Less than an hour earlier, a similar make and model vehicle, with individuals wearing similar clothing, can be seen on a Renton gun store’s security cameras peering through the windows, before ultimately driving away.Pantel Tactical in Renton shared their security footage with FOX 13, owner Josh Pantel believes the individuals caught on their camera around 1:40 a.m. were the same seen ramming the posts outside GunNation in Lake Stevens just before 2:20 a.m.Pantel Tactical was rammed by a vehicle in March, causing extensive damage to the front of the store, the suspect attempted to steal firearms as well."A lot of us are frustrated. We’re pissed." Michaud said. "Not only because of current political laws—that I’m going to say [Governor] Inslee and [Attorney General] Ferguson have put in place that supposedly protect people from guns, guns aren’t violent. People are violent."Michaud has been in the firearm business since 2009, with his location in Lake Stevens open for about two years."Gun shops have been broken into... I know a couple that have been busted into more than once." Michaud said. "I know other shops as well that are catching video of them scoping out their shops and trying to figure out how to get in.""I mean, we’re people who work long hours, hard days." He said. "We work for what we have. Nothing we have is given to us. We shouldn’t have to worry about criminals coming to take that from us, especially with firearms getting stolen, because it’s not safe in the community."The Lake Stevens Police Department confirmed to FOX 13 this is an active investigation.

MyRock ; issue n°44 (Jan/Feb 2017) A Nameless Ghoul from Ghost interview.
Photos: Manon Violence Interview: Mark Renton
2017 has been the year of all records for Ghost! After an exceptional concert at Hellfest, a nicely lead Download Festival (despite voice problems) and a France tour still in minds, the band then launched a triumphal American tour. Meanwhile, the satanic clergy also draw its awesome “Popestar”, EP lead with drums beating by the heady single “Square Hammer”. Telephonical talk with one Nameless Ghoul to take stock on the past, the present and future of this definitely fascinating band.
//Before continuing, note this issue is still available for international orders on their online shop. Direct link to this issue’s page in source! Don’t be surprised by the first cover shown there, it’s litteraly a two covered mag… The mag is meant to be read in 2 time: you start by one side, no matter which one, and when you reach the middle, you have to close it and flip it then tadaaa you have more to read on the 2nd side!//
(Read the full interview under the cut and feel free to point out mistakes!)

Hello, who’s calling? Nameless Ghoul: Hello! I’m one of the Nameless Ghouls.
Which one? Which instrument do you play in the band? N.G. : I’m our clergy’s official spokesperson. I’m also Ghost’s founder, main composer and, most of the time, I play guitar.
How do you feel at the approach of Papa Emeritus III’s end of reign? Because there’ll certainly be a new Papa Emeritus soon… N.G. : You’re right, we’re close to the end of a cycle. Personally, I always saw change as a good thing. It’s stimulating. We still have a lot of concerts to give in 2017, but I think I can safely say that at the end of the next year, all Nameless Ghouls will be tired of Papa Emeritus III! It’ll be nice to see a new leader coming to guide us.
How would you describe the personality of Papa Emeritus III compared to his predecessors? N. G. : First of all, Papa Emeritus III is an entertainer! He loves projectors, he loves the public, and he loves success. The first Papa Emeritus was someone very rigid, very strict, and very solemn. A real son of a bitch! (laughs) To be honest, we don’t miss him at all! Papa Emeritus II was a pervert a little bit sadistic, and, in hindsight, I think he wasn’t very at ease on stage. He wasn’t a showman, unlike Papa Emeritus III! Him, he’s the guide we missed to rise up the quality of our shows, to reach the step above and communicate with our fans. We will be eternally thankful for his work. I believe he have paved the way for his successor…
Precisely, what are you waiting from the future Papa Emeritus IV? N.G. : Well, I want him to be scary. That he bring back something more tenebrous, while remaining spectacular. Broadly speaking, I want the next album to come back to a gloomier atmosphere.
Fueled by ego
On a more personal viewpoint, what is your relationship with your character? N.G. : What’s exciting me the most with Ghost, it’s that the project is a real challenge for the individuals involved. Everybody is on an equal footing. Furthermore, there’s something really thrilling to embody a character which is a part of yourself, but never totally you. Traditionally, rock stars always reach the point where they fuse with their creature. In the end, rock’s always been fueled by ego. Even if you’re part of a fully honest and underground band, you’ll always have this desire to be under the spotlights, to be recognize, famous and loved. Those pretending the contrary are liars. Roughly, no matter the music you make, you all secretly dream to be a kind of Justin Bieber. (laughs) To be masked is something very different. It’s a kind of anomaly in the entertainment system. Because every day, you never receive the admiration you deserve. When I’m not on stage with Ghost, I’m going back in anonymity. It’s very positive for me. I would say, my character brings me some stability in my daily life. But I’m aware my case is a bit special since I’m Ghost’s main composer and thus I’ll always be linked in a way or another to this project. But being in the obscurity is sometime more complicated to manage for the other Nameless Ghouls…
This mystery surrounding Ghost inevitably attracts the fans curiosity. This year, some of them started a vast quest to discover your identities. We imagine it’s part of the game, but what are you feeling regarding it? N.G. : From the beginning, we knew it’ll be impossible to keep the secret until the end. It’s already a miracle we held this long. (laughs) Personally, it doesn’t matter. I think the work accomplished pays its own way. I mean, our albums, our concerts and our universes are that strong they succeed to supplant the reality. Today, people don’t care to know who’s under Papa Emeritus’ hat. When they come to see us play, they want the real Papa. It’s a bit like if our creature ended up escaping us to live its own life.
2017 has been a successful year for Ghost, with appearances in huge festivals, a colossal American tour and the worldwide success of the EP “Popestar”. How did you live that? N.G. : This year has been amazing on every points, really! We’ve been able to see how much the band has grown by federating more fans. However, I’m not someone who contemplate our success and congratulate myself. The past doesn’t interest me. But the future does. When we take a step forward I always try to have in mind the next one. 5 years ago, we played at the Olympia supporting In Flames and Trivium. It happens that on 11 April next we’ll come back, this time as the headliner. But instead of rejoicing, I like to tell myself: “OK, it’s cool, but what I really want to do is Bercy!”. And if one day we make it to Bercy as the headliner, I know in a corner of my head there’ll be the Stade de France. I’m ambitious. (laughs)
I come from extreme metal.
Ghost is one of the rare bands to link metal to the general public. Do you think it explains this popularity? N.G. : I think, yes. We see more and more diversity in the public at our gigs. Of course, there are metalheads with long hair and battle jacket, but there are also hipsters, girls who usually listen to pop music, and alternative rock lovers. I find it fantastic. You know, musically, I come from extreme metal. It’s been in my genes since my teenage years. I listen to many other things, but it’s where I come from. It’s my identity and it’s what forged my mentality. At the point that, when Ghost began to be successful, I started to feel guilty. I had that feeling I transgressed underground metal’s tactical rules, which are systematic rejection of success and popularity. It took me a lot of abnegation to understand success isn’t nefarious, on the contrary, it’s the reward for an hard work. And deep down I think I was scared to be rejected by my own community, to be treated like a sellout.
Have you ever been confront to animosity from fundamentalists metalheads? N.G. : Oh yes, mostly now! On internet, some start to let their hate flow on Ghost. But it’s OK, I understand. Myself, if I wasn’t in the band, I think I would hate Ghost. (laughs) Because in metal, once a band makes money, they’re sellout. It’s like this and I accept it. It’s also an old metalhead’s thing. People who were here during the rise of the extreme genres grew up with a certain code of conduct, with a more rigid thinking. By the way, I’m going to tell you a secret: some of my best friends abhor Ghost. They hate the band. They don’t understand what we do, they think it’s crap. But it’s nothing. They can. They stay my friends after all. (laughs) It’s different with kids, they are more open minded. But in hindsight, I’m figuring out that me too, in my daily life, I’m an old fart. (laughs) I listen to a small amount of new things. Nothing give me more joy than a good old “Master of Puppets”, a “Seven Churches” by Possessed, or a King Diamond, my hero!
King Diamond & Merciful Fate.
Would you say King Diamond was the biggest inspiration for Ghost, in terms of theatricality? N.G. : Indeed! As far as I remember, I’ve always listened to King Diamond and Merciful Fate. At home, my mother listened to a lot of 60’s and 70’s classic rock, like Beatles, Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. My brother, him, listened to harder stuff like AC/DC, Sex Pistols, Rainbow… I liked all of this, but when my neighbor introduce me to King Diamond I had the feeling to be someone special. I was listening to this crazy stuff that no one else knew at home! I was 8 and, at this age, as you can imagine, I was very marked by his albums’ visuals. King Diamond is the one who open me the door to this gloomy universe which is now find in Ghost.
Kid from the 80’s.
We also guess an interest for the 80’s! If previously you made a cover of Depeche Mode, your EP “Popestar” offer us covers of Echo & The Bunnymen and Eurythmics. N.G. : I’m a kid from the 80’s, it’s the soundtrack of my life. I think it’s mostly thanks to the radio, which was always switch on at home. I like all classics: Mike Oldfield, Nik Kershaw, Eurythmics, Midnight Oil… When I was a teenage, I kind of liked to show of and act like a thoug one who only listen to extreme metal, but secretly, in my bedroom, I listened to Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Bronski Beat. (laughs) And, in the end, Ghost is exactly this: a mix of Kiss, Depeche Mode and Merciful Fate with a bit of Pink Floyd over it, especially “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” and “A Saucerful of Secrets”.
Tumblr media
On your last EP, there is the heady single “Square Hammer”. It’s the first time you embrace that clearly pop’s codes. Is this song representative of the sound you would like to have on the next album? N.G. : You know, album after album, each time we ask ourselves how far we can go. It was already the case with “Infestissumam”. At the time, we wondered if the song “Ghuleh/Zombie Queen” wasn’t too much. After a moment of hesitation we were like “Fuck! Black Sabbath made ballads so why not us?”. On “Meliora”, we wondered if there weren’t too many ballads. Then, when we composed “Square Hammer”, we found the title too direct, too effective. We were scared our fans wouldn’t understand. We’ve always had this metalhead consciousness tugging us. But in the end, we thought a good song is a good song, no matter the shape. So to answer your question, I think our next disc will wander further more into these melodies, indeed.
You have a break until the resumption of the tour, on March. Will you write the new album while you’re at it? N.G. : Of course! I’m already on it, I have some new songs…  And a good idea where I want to go with this album, but it’s too early to talk about it. The problem is the 2017 tour will extend and I’m not sure we’ll have the time to finish the recording before going back on the roads. I think we’ll finish it in late 2017, with a potential release in 2018. Earlier seems difficult to me! All I can tell you is that visually, the next album’s imagery will come back to something way darker than “Meliora”.
What can we expect for your next date at the Olympia, on 11 April next? N.G. : I saw today that our concert is sold out, it’s amazing! It’ll be very alike shows we gave in the USA this year. We have a stage structure more sizable compared to the last time we came in France. Visually, the show will be impressive, but we’ll also play some rare titles. The only deception is we won’t have the pyrotechnical effects, because they aren’t authorized at the Olympia. So it’ll has to work doubly hard! You know, we love to play in France. We are always very well hosted here. Moreover, what I most loved since the release of “Meliora” it’s to play again and again in France. I really saw our public grow out there when it comes to Hellfest or Rock en Seine. To feel appreciated like this is the greatest reward. Furthermore, the food is succulent in France, people are lovely and you have this attitude a bit impertinent which is rather close to that of Ghost. France, it’s our second home. We’re eager to be back at the Olympia and to party with you! (Translator note: Ooooh you and your sweet like honey words~ We love you too, dear.)
Bonus anecdote:
(Almost) naked with James Hetfield! Our new friend Nameless Ghoul is an ultimate fan of Metallica. Before becoming friend with James Hetfield, he met him in circumstances rather… embarrassing: “Metallica, it’s the greatest band in the world! I hadn’t have time to fully savor their last album but I’m so happy to know they’re alive and in great shape.  It also means they will tour, and thus we’ll get the occasion to meet on the road. James Hetfield has been one of Ghost’s first supports. I had the chance to meet him several times, and since we often message each other. The first time he’s been introduced to me, the situation was rather… surrealistic. We were in our lodge, changing ourselves, and here come James Hetfield suddenly appearing by the door to say hi. And you know what? I was in underwear! It was the most embarrassing situation of my life! I was there, in underwear, in front of my greatest idol! How embarrassing!”

Stoppable Family Vacation - Chapter 2
Chapter 2 - The Stoppable Vacation Curse - Part I
(6:56pm)
Kim went into the den and got out her smartphone from her handbag. She called up the Morgans.
"Hey...um...Tara? I may need your help!"
Tara replied on the other end. She and Jason, along with their 3-year old daughter Emily, have stayed in Middleton.
"Oh sure, Kim! What is it about?" the former blonde cheerleader asked.
"The hubby said the FV words! What am I gonna do?" Kim exclaimed.
"Oh boy. That cannot be a good sign!" Tara replied. "We're going to have to gather the Foleys and the Halls as well and meet up at your place."
"That's probably the best idea. A good strategy must be needed for a sitch like this!" Kim replied.
"I'm gonna also get in touch with the Halls and the Rentons as well." Tara added.
(45 minutes later)
Kim, both Monique and her husband, Jamarcus Hall, Felix and Zita Renton, and Tara, whom came alone while Jason was talking care of Emily, were all present in the basement of the Stoppable house. Monique was now a web designer at the Club Banana website and a fashion consultant while Jamarcus, a former star wide receiver and Ron's team-mate for the Mad Dog football team, was the district attorney. He was playing around with his six-year old son, Jameel. Monique was also 6 months into her pregnancy with her second child at the time, whom was a girl. Felix, meanwhile, was in his new futuristic-like wheelchair, levitating six feet off the ground. The Rentons had no kids...so far.
The basement itself was extra space the family used for a small movie theater with six recliners and a popcorn machine.
"Good, now that I have gathered you all here tonight, I want you to guide through a crisis here!" Kim exclaimed.
"What's the crisis, baby girl?" Monique asked? "Is it about trying to get the latest GWA tixs to the next match?"
"Is it the lootbox controversy that's haunting the latest installment of Everlot?" Zita asked.
"Or is it trying to lock up a power-hungry supervillain?" Jamarcus asked.
"It's neither of those. Ron is proposing that the whole Stoppable family..." Kim said before pausing a bit for dramatic effect "...goes on vacation!"
The Rentons looked at Kim in surprise.
"What's so bad about a vacation, Kim?" Felix asked.
Zita agreed, "Yeah, I think it's great! Traveling down the open road with the wind blowing through your hair!" She simulated this by fingering through her black hair.
Tara and the Hall parents, on the other hand, gasped and recoiled in horror.
"You are totally not serious, are you, Kim?" Monique questioned Kim's rationale.
"What do you mean by that, Monique?" Felix asked.
"Have you seen the AddressBook photos on Kim's profile?" Monique countered back?
"I admit that I have not been on AddressBook for a while." Zita replied. "We're more into the FaceChat type of thing the young people are doing now! With their apps and FaceMine!"
"Oh God! Why are we growing so old?" Felix moaned. "I don't wanna have gray hairs at age 30!"
Kim did a facepalm and said, "Let's just get back to the topic at hand!"
"Very well...where we we?" Tara asked.
"The subject of family vacations and my family problems with them." Kim said while taking out a disc labeled appropriately, 'Past Stoppable Family Vacations'.
The redhead also continued, "And Jamarcus, now would be the perfect time to escort Jameel upstairs to play with Justin and Alexa as the disc contains stuff that would totes be on the disturbing levels."
"How disturbing?" Jamarcus asked.
"Like, R-rated distrubing!" Kim replied. "With really gorchy things that young eyes shouldn't be looking at."
Jamarcus turned to his son and said, "Why don't you go and play ball with Kim's kids?"
"Yay! I love to play ball! " Jameel exclaimed as his father escorted him up the stairs and out of the basement.
Kim then put the DVD in the projector. Jamarcus went back down the stairs.
"With the kids out of the room, let's review on the past vacations of shame."
She got the DVD remote and started to play it.
"Exhibit A, the infamous Honeymoon at Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, 2011! Ron not only lost a good bit of the luggage but also...this scene!"
The scene showed the Stoppables skinny-dipping in the nude in a lake when a bunch of racoons took their clothes. They had stunned looks on their faces.
"So here we are, in the nude, and suffered through five miles of walking...right in the most populated national park in the United States!" Kim continued. "We had to avoid the crowds, and Bonnie's paparazzi just to get back to the hotel which, again, wasn't a good play on Ron's decision. It took guts and luck by Ron to recover our marriage to a hotel that I really did like."
Kim then pressed another button, moving the DVD to another chapter.
"Exhibit B, the offical first time we took a vacation as the Stoppable family. Pioneer Town in Arizona, June 2014. Justin was one at the time. It was supposed to be a fun time...but instead, it turned out worse than the gunfight at the OK Corral."
Footage showed Kim, in super-skinny black leather CB overalls with both straps hooked, a button-down short sleeve green shirt, black CB booties, hoop earrings and a statement gold necklace. She was holding Justin on the top of her head.
"I lost my phone so I didn't check the weather. It was hot outside so I was standing in the shade when Ron insisted we take our first family portrait." _
"Hey, KS! Wanna take our first Stoppable Selfie together with me, you, and Justin?" Ron asked his wife. Ron was in the Three Wolves shirt and baggy jeans.
Kim replied, sweating from the black leather of her overalls, "Sure, Ron! But can you make it fast? I think Justin's about to puke!"
"Aw man, why is taking care of babies so hard?" Ron asked, complaining while pulling out his smartphone.
He also added, "Okay, everyone bend over and say 'Ride 'em Cowboy!'"
Kim shouted "Ride 'em, Cowboy!" and then bent over. She felt a large ripping sound behind her back and Justin began to puke onto Kim's hair. Kim's cheeks then began to blush from sheer embarrassment. The belt also broke from behind on Ron's pants.
"Good thing our vacations didn't turn out like that..." Jamarcus whispered in Monique's ear.
"I also forgot, among all things..." Kim sighed, "...to wear my panties that day! And Ron lost his pants as well."
Kim then turned to their next chapter of woe from past vacations.
"Exhibit C. Walley World in California from 2017!"
She then showed a video of the Stoppable family enjoying a photo with Marty Moose, the Wally World mascot.
"For most of that vacation, it was fun...until this part!"
The video footage then showed Justin punching the Marty Moose mascot right in the groin area. Kim and Ron were both trying to restrain Justin. Alexa, however, was laughing.
"Justin then stripped down to his underwear and bathed himself in a mud puddle. We were then given a lifetime ban from the park. No questions asked." Kim groaned.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi cast is packed with star power, and here's where people may have seen the actors before. The upcoming Star Wars series – one of several currently in development Disney+ - will see Ewan McGregor reprise his iconic role from the prequel trilogy. Hayden Christensen has previously been confirmed to return as Darth Vader, and the two Star Wars veterans are now being joined by 10 more stars.
Obi-Wan Kenobi will take place 10 years after Order 66 and the other events of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. As implied by the title, the series will follow Obi-Wan – now living on Tatooine – during the early days of the Galactic Empire. Though Disney hasn’t revealed concrete story details beyond when the show is set, it will likely see Obi-Wan temporarily depart his vigil over Luke Skywalker on Tatooine. Disney has also promised that Obi-Wan and Darth Vader will face off in one way or another in the new series.

While fans will have to keep waiting to learn more about the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Disney has released some big news in the form of sweeping casting announcements. A total of 12 stars have now been confirmed for the show, and though character details have yet to be revealed, the official ensemble is plenty of reason to get excited.
Tumblr media
Ewan McGregor is reprising his role as Obi-Wan in the new series, promising more of what many consider to be the best performance in the Star Wars prequels. McGregor is best known for his Star Wars appearances, though he also gained fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s for films like Trainspotting, Black Hawk Down, and Moulin Rouge. Since he last played Obi-Wan, McGregor has appeared in numerous films, including recently roles in Beauty and the Beast, Doctor Sleep, Christopher Robin, Birds of Prey, and a reprisal of his Mark Renton character in T2 Trainspotting.
Tumblr media
Like McGregor, Hayden Christensen will make his first proper Star Wars appearance since Revenge of the Sith in Obi-Wan Kenobi. It’s unclear exactly what the role of Christensen’s Darth Vader will be in the new show, but a showdown of some sort between him and Obi-Wan has been confirmed. Christensen’s role as Anakin in the Star Wars prequels is certainly his most famous, though has since appeared in a number of films including Takers, American Heist, and Last Man. He also received some notably critical praise for his leading role in the 2003 film Shattered Glass.
Tumblr media
Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Moses Ingram is a younger star in Hollywood, but one whose fame is rapidly rising, and rightfully so. Ingram broke out in 2020 when she played Jolene in The Queen’s Gambit alongside Anya-Taylor Joy. She will play Lady Macduff in the Joel Coen-directed, Denzel Washington-led The Tragedy of Macbeth, which is expected to premiere later in 2021, and she’s set to appear in the upcoming Michael Bay thriller Ambulance. Her role in the Obi-Wan show is unknown.

Joel Edgerton will return to the Star Wars universe in Obi-Wan Kenobi, and while it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, it’s safe to assume that he’ll be reprising his prequel trilogy role as Owen Lars – Anakin Skywalker’s stepbrother and Luke’s uncle. The reprisal makes sense considering that Obi-Wan will spend at least some of his time on Tatooine, where he watches over Luke as he grows up. Edgerton has led a long and prolific career as an actor, writer, director, and producer, with notable onscreen roles including Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, Patrick in Zero Dark Thirty, and Falstaff in The King, which he also helped write. He has also recently appeared in Bright, Red Sparrow, and Boy Erased, which he adapted and directed.
Tumblr media
It seems that Beru Lars will also be returning in Obi-Wan Kenobi, as Bonnie Piesse – who played Luke Skywalker’s aunt in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith – has been confirmed to star alongside Joel Edgerton. Beyond Star Wars, Piesse has appeared in the Australian series Stingers, Blue Heelers, and Last Man Standing. She also featured in the acclaimed romantic comedy Love Eterne. In addition to her acting career, Piesse is also a professional singer/songwriter.
Tumblr media
Acclaimed comedian Kumail Nanjiani will appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi in an unknown role. The actor is best known for playing Dinesh Chugtai on Silicon Valley, and for comedy films like The Lovebirds and The Big Sick, the latter of which Nanjiani wrote with his wife Emily V. Gordon. Nanjiani is also known for his stand-up comedy, the podcast Staying In with Emily and Kumail, which he hosts with his wife, and for the Comedy Central show The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail, which ran from 2014-2016. Nanjiani will star as Kingo in the upcoming MCU film Eternals.
Tumblr media
A veteran of fantasy and sci-fi television, Indira Varma will star in Obi-Wan Kenobi in an undisclosed role. Varma is most recognizable for her role as Ellaria Sand in Game of Thrones, and she will now follow her former costar Pedro Pascal into the world of Star Wars streaming series. Varma has also appeared in series such as Rome, Torchwood, Luther, Human Target, Paranoid, and Carnival Row. She is confirmed to appear in Mission Impossible 7.

Rupert Friend has been confirmed for Obi-Wan Kenobi as an unknown character. Friend is best known for playing Peter Quinn on Homeland – a role that garnered him an Emmy nomination in 2013. He’s also known for playing Mr. Wickham in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film, Agent 47 in the video game movie Hitman: Agent 47, Vasily Stalin in The Death of Stalin, and Theo van Gogh in At Eternity’s Gate.
Tumblr media
Son of hip hop legend Ice Cube, O’Shea Jackson Jr. first entered the acting world in 2015’s Straight Outta Compton, in which he played a young version of his father. He has since appeared in Ingrid Goes West, Den of Thieves, Long Shot, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Just Mercy. Jackson Jr. will appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi as an unnamed character.
Tumblr media
Sung Kang will join the Star Wars universe in Obi-Wan Kenobi, playing an as-yet unnamed character. Kang shot to stardom as the suave drifter Han in the Fast & Furious franchise – a character he first played in Justin Lin’s 2002 cult-classic Better Luck Tomorrow. Kang has also appeared in films like Live Free or Die Hard, Ninja Assassin, Bullet to the Head, and Code 8. He will reprise the role of Han in F9: The Fast Saga.
Tumblr media
Veteran TV actor Simone Kessell will make her Star Wars debut in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kessell has played numerous roles in film and television since the 1990s, including appearances on shows like Farscape, Xena: Warrior Princess, CSI: Miami, and Fringe. More recently, Kessell played Lt. Alicia Washington in Terra Nova, Queen Ahinoam in Of Kings and Prophets, and Rebecca in The Crossing.
Tumblr media
Noted indie filmmaker Benny Safdie – half of the Safdie brothers – will appear as a character in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Safdie is better known for his work behind the camera, having directed both Good Time and Uncut Gems with his brother Joshua, among other projects. Safdie also has a number of acting credits to his name, including appearances in various short films, Pieces of a Woman, Soggy Bottom, and most notably as one of the two leads of Good Time, alongside Robert Pattinson. Safdie’s role in Obi-Wan Kenobi is unknown.
