“Now, how long will this take? The Ukrainians behave like charlatans and we continue to pay,” reads a quote in French next to a picture of Taylor Swift on what looks like a promotional poster for an upcoming tour. “That is not right.”

“Every time the Ukrainians get money, everything goes wrong,” reads another quote in German next to a picture of Selena Gomez on what appears to be a page taken from a fashion magazine.

"It's just disappointing how the Ukrainians use our help,” a quote, also in German, reads next to a picture of Kim Kardashian speaking on stage. “Someone needs to stop this, seriously."

Though the images make it look like these quotes were said by Swift, Gomez, and Kardashian, they weren’t. They were the product of a pro-Russian network of fake Facebook and X accounts that created and disseminated an ad campaign suggesting that some of the most famous people in the world back Russia and detest Ukraine. Among the celebrities included are Beyoncé, Oprah, Gigi Hadid, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber, Shakira, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Cristiano Ronaldo. “Supporting Ukrainians is unacceptable,” reads a quote next to a photo of Oprah. “Their actions destroy lives and societies.”

The disinformation campaign, which was launched in November, reached at least 7.6 million people on Facebook alone, according to a database of the ads reviewed by WIRED and collected by Reset, a nonprofit that provides grants to those tackling disinformation. It’s still in progress, and two separate groups of disinformation researchers believe the campaign is run by a notorious Russian influence operation dubbed Doppelganger that has in the past been linked to the Kremlin. New information shared exclusively with WIRED suggests the campaign has links to Russia’s GRU military spy agency.

At the beginning of November, researchers at Reset discovered what they described as a “blitz campaign” by two networks of fake Facebook pages. Over the course of a week, the researchers saw at least 560 Facebook ads that feature images of celebrities alongside pro-Russian and anti-Ukrainian quotes. While some of the ads reached only thousands of users, others spread far more widely. One featuring Cristiano Ronaldo reached over 115,000 people before it was deactivated. Alongside the image of Ronaldo was the quote “It's frustrating to see how the Ukrainians use our aid. Someone needs to stop this, seriously.”

Researchers at Reset believe that the campaign “exploits loopholes in Facebook’s ad verification and content moderation systems to foster hostility against Ukrainians and undermine EU support for Kyiv.” Including fake quotes from celebrities within images makes it harder for Facebook to spot a coordinated campaign, they added. The campaign, which specifically targeted people in France and Germany, also removed any links or additional text in the ads, making it harder for Meta to track it.

Doppelganger has been actively spreading disinformation on both Facebook and X for some time. The organization was unmasked in September 2022 by EU DisinfoLab, a nonprofit working to combat disinformation against the EU, but it had been operating since at least May 2022. The group used clones of media websites, including The Guardian and Bild, to spread disinformation, filling the fake sites with articles, videos, and polls designed to push pro-Kremlin talking points about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Facebook first announced action against Doppelganger in September 2022, and said it was removing pages and accounts associated with the campaign.

In June 2023, another campaign targeting major French websites including Le Parisien, 20 Minutes, Le Monde, and Le Figaro was exposed by the French government. “French Minister supports the murder of Russian soldiers in Ukraine,” read one fake headline on a page that looked like Le Monde during that campaign.

Despite being repeatedly found out, the operators of Doppelganger have managed to continue their work: They also created fake versions of Fox News and other news websites to seed chaos and confusion during the Israel-Hamas war.

While Doppelganger campaigns in the past have been linked to the Kremlin in some media reports, new information from researchers tracking the disinformation campaign shows a link to Russia’s GRU.

A network of bot accounts on X, which in the past have been used to push Doppelganger’s fake websites, has also been used to push people to websites with direct links to Russia’s military spy agency. “Doppelganger bots promoted two sites recently, which both have strong connections to GRU,” researchers at Antibot4Navalny, a Russian anti-disinformation research group that has been closely tracking Doppelganger activity on X, tell WIRED. The researchers did not want to be identified due to security concerns.

The first site promoted by the Doppelganger bots was ObservateurContinental.fr. The Whois data, a public record of information related to the registration of a website, for this site shows that it is connected to InfoRos, a news agency previously linked to the GRU that operates hundreds of websites to push Kremlin propaganda. InfoRos was first reported to be a front organization for GRU Unit 54777 by The Washington Post in 2018. At the time, the group was said to have been active as far back as 2014 to spread disinformation about Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

The second site pushed by Doppelganger bots targeted Germans. In October 2022, an investigation by the German newspaper Die Welt found that the author of content on the EuroBRICS site was being paid directly by InfoRos, which is registered as the operator of the EuroBRICs website by the German domain registrar.

Many of the same images from Doppelganger’s campaign, along with others targeting an English-speaking audience, were also shared on X by the same network of bots that have previously shared links to the Doppelganger campaigns.

“We collected a whopping 75-plus fake quotes by celebrities from the US and EU, all massively posted recently by bots of Doppelganger, the pro-Kremlin influence campaign,” one of the researchers at Antibot4Navalny tells WIRED.

The campaign on X, which coincided with the Facebook campaign, used over 10,000 bot accounts, according to the researchers. In the space of one eight-hour period, the bots posted over 27,000 messages. At one point, the bot accounts were posting 120 messages every minute.

The posts on X are identical to those posted as ads on Facebook identified by Reset, except that some of these posts were in English. The X campaign also featured mocked-up versions of celebrities’ verified Instagram accounts, making it seem as if screenshots of celebrity Instagram accounts, using similar anti-Ukraine quotes, were being shared.

X did not respond to a request for comment from WIRED about the Doppelganger campaign. Since Elon Musk took control of the platform in October 2022, he has eliminated most of the company’s trust and safety team, and disinformation has flourished on the site, especially around breaking news events like the recent Israel-Hamas war.

One of Reset’s researchers, who did not want to be identified to protect their privacy, tells WIRED that, in recent days, researchers have seen Doppelganger’s celebrity-based campaign evolve. Some ads on Facebook now, like the ones on X, feature screenshots that appear to show verified Instagram accounts of the same celebrities, adding a further layer of authenticity to the campaign. In one case, a screenshot of a fake Instagram post from the entrepreneur Richard Branson suggests that he believes America was behind the Nord Stream explosion.

The researcher also found video ads that feature real footage of celebrities with fake audio dubbed over the top, which they say have been created with text-to-speech apps. The researchers at Reset were unable to identify which app was being used to automate the creation of the videos. One example reviewed by WIRED showed footage of German filmmaker Wim Wenders speaking in English about his own films, dubbed to make it appear as if he was speaking in French about how “the Ukrainians are ruined.” The ad was posted to Facebook on November 25 and was seen by up to 3,000 people before it was removed for failing to have the “required disclaimer,” according to Facebook’s ad library.

While Facebook has taken down the majority of the pages, some of them remain active, and the campaign shows glaring gaps in Meta’s ability to deal with disinformation on this scale.

Meta declined to respond on the record to WIRED’s request for comment about the campaign and the network of fake accounts created to disseminate the false ads. In a report from August, however, Meta acknowledged that Doppelganger was the “largest and most aggressively persistent covert influence operation from Russia that we’ve seen since 2017.”

The automated creation of accounts on Facebook is a well-known problem, and Meta has deployed a variety of artificial intelligence systems to combat efforts to mass-create fake pages and accounts. By its own admission, Facebook deletes millions, and sometimes billions, of fake pages every quarter, sometimes within minutes of their creation. Meta claims that around 5 percent of its monthly average users are fake, but outside experts say that figure is substantially higher.

While the Doppelganger group ran the campaign, the fake Facebook pages it used were purchased from an agency that specializes in creating massive networks of inauthentic pages on Facebook, according to Reset. They are still investigating who created these initial networks, but the researchers say this campaign was pushed out by two separate networks they identified containing 52,000 and 25,000 pages respectively. In October, Reset published a report identifying even larger networks of inauthentic Facebook pages, including one that had over 340,000 inauthentic pages. Despite having been identified publicly, these networks are still operating today.

With a number of major elections taking place in 2024, experts are again concerned about Meta’s ability to reign in disinformation.

“Meta’s sloppy product safety is a security liability for both Europe and the US as we approach next year’s elections,” Felix Kartte, EU director at Reset claims to WIRED. “Threat actors will continue exploiting loopholes in Facebook’s advertising systems to target deceptive and inflammatory content at millions of voters in the world’s biggest democracies.”

The actor Matthew Perry, who has been found dead at his home aged 54, brought a wry sense of humour to the role of Chandler Bing in Friends, the American sitcom featuring six twentysomethings in Manhattan facing the ups and down of everyday life.

“Chandler’s a guy who’s just not comfortable in his own skin – he’s got a great excuse to be funny,” said Perry of the sarcastic, neurotic character in the programme that ran from 1994 to 2004. “He’s an exaggerated form of me.”

The neurosis partly came from Chandler experiencing the divorce of his parents when he was nine and using humour as a defence mechanism. It echoed Perry’s own life, with his mother and father splitting up by his first birthday.

Through his work in “statistical analysis and data reconfiguration”, the character pulled in more money than the other friends – Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Monica (Courteney Cox), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), Ross (David Schwimmer) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) – although he hated his job.

Chandler had already met Monica Geller at college before they became neighbours in Greenwich Village, where he shared an apartment with Joey. By the end of the fourth series, the relationship had gone from being close friends to lovers and, three years later, they were husband and wife. Unable to have children of their own, they adopted twins, with their birth as a central storyline, alongside Ross and Rachel reuniting, in Friends’ final episode, which attracted more than 50 million viewers in the US.

By then, the programme’s impact on popular culture had spread well beyond its homeland. Joey’s “How ya doin’?” and Chandler’s “Could I be any more …” broke into the language of its young audience. The part earned Perry worldwide fame that continues with Netflix bringing the sitcom to a new generation.

Nevertheless, stardom did nothing to help the actor to overcome his own vulnerabilities. In 1997, Aniston said: “His feelings get hurt. He cares what people think. He even bruises easily.”

Perry’s battles with his personal demons first hit the headlines halfway through the sitcom’s run. In his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry recalled a journey to alcoholism that went from beer and wine at 14 to drinking vodka by the quart, as well as getting addicted to prescription drugs.

In 1997, he checked into a Minnesota rehab clinic for 28 days when he became hooked on a painkiller and appetite suppressant after a jet-ski accident and a 35lb weight loss. Three years later, he was hospitalised with pancreatitis. In 2001, he abruptly left the set of the film Serving Sara (released the following year) to go into rehab again.

Perry reflected that by 2018, at the age of 49, he had spent more than half his life in treatment centres. That year he suffered pneumonia and an exploded colon caused by opiod overuse, resulting in time on life support and two weeks in a coma.

He converted his Malibu home into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre, Perry House, in 2013, but closed it two years later, citing expensive running costs.

He had been drug and alcohol-free for 18 months before the screening in 2021 of Friends: The Reunion, a one-off special bringing back together the programme’s six stars.

Born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, Matthew was the son of Suzanne (nee Langford, later Morrison), a Canadian journalist, and John Bennett Perry, an American actor. He grew up mainly in Ottawa when his mother returned to her home country and eventually became press secretary to the then prime minister, Pierre Trudeau. In 2017, Perry revealed that he and another pupil at Rockcliffe Park elementary school had beaten up Justin Trudeau, Pierre’s son and current Canadian premier. Trudeau responded on Twitter (now X): “I’ve been giving it some thought, and you know what, who hasn’t wanted to punch Chandler? How about a rematch @MatthewPerry?”

While studying at Ashbury college, Perry became a top-ranking junior tennis player. He practised up to 10 hours a day, but switched that determination to acting after travelling to Los Angeles when he was 15 and being reunited with his father. “I wanted to be famous so badly,” he told the New York Times in 2002. “You want the attention, you want the bucks, and you want the best seat in the restaurant.”

He made an impression with leading roles in sitcoms: Chazz Russell in Second Chance (1987), retitled Boys Will Be Boys for its second series in 1988, Billy Kells in Sydney (1990) and Matt Bailey in Home Free (1993) before Friends came along.

Perry’s big-screen debut came as River Phoenix’s best friend in A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon (1988), but he never became the film star he hoped to be despite appearances in Fools Rush In (1997), Three to Tango (1999), The Whole Nine Yards (2000) and its sequel, The Whole Ten Yards (2003), both alongside Bruce Willis.

He stuck with television. Switching to drama, he had a short run as Joe Quincy, a Republican lawyer, in The West Wing in 2003, and starred in another Aaron Sorkin series, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (2006-07). His own sitcom idea, Mr Sunshine, with him playing Ben Donovan, a San Diego arena operations manager, was dropped after a short run in 2011. The following year he starred as Ryan King, a sportscaster, in Go On and later played Oscar Madison in a revival of The Odd Couple (2015-17). He also wrote and starred in the play The End of Longing, which debuted in London’s West End in 2016.

He had relationships with many high-profile actors including Julia Roberts, Minnie Driver and Lizzy Caplan. From 2020 to 2021, he was engaged to Molly Hurwitz, a talent manager.

His parents survive him.

On "upscaling" of covers ie why are we so boring now?

So, my recent desire to reread some Robin Hood retellings I used to love led me to Jennifer Roberson's Lady of the Forest. Roberson wrote a LOT of fantasy (Tiger and Del series is amazing) but she also wrote period novels now and then, and LotF is a historical take on the Robin Hood legend with focus on Marian.

I adored that novel back when I first read it many years ago and every time I've reread it since. My paperback copy is somewhere it's a pain to get to and is probably falling apart, so I went on amazon to get a kindle edition. It's there, I own it, yay but it also made me discover the new cover for it.

The first cover would definitely make me pause and check the book out a bit in a book store. It has a gorgeous old tale vibe that actually does convey a lot - it's heavy on romance (which it is), it has our protagonists (no wonder it's one of my favorite versions - I am a total sucker for blond with PTSD MLs.) The new cover is so depersonalized and generic I'd never pause twice.

This cover, like so many others, has gone respectable. No pretty people (no people at all), no romance no nothing. Some medieval weapon or two, a bland pattern and color. WHY?

The first cover you may like or not but it conveys a story! It catches attention. The second I wouldn't even pause in front of.

I know that romance novels have (sadly) moved from those gonzo covers with shirtless dudes clutching busty ladies but this is not even that. This is just boring.

Two corollaries.

One: I miss 1990s fascination with blond dudes holding their OTPs. Here is Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince (a delightful old school fantasy read I totally recommend.)

Two: I can't say I get the romance novel cover switch either. This is the old cover for Justine Davis' Lord of the Storm:

It's not any less eye popping but it's kinda odd to leave off the heroine (though as someone who's read this novel more than once (it hits some VERY specific kinks; if you read it you know which ones. This is my judgment free zone :P) I am still not sure where she was clutching the dude's leg while wearing a nightie and 1980s hair.)

I mean look at this beauty! I checked out this trilogy because of that cover! It's just as gloriously pulpy as the cover promises (side note if you like fucked up x fucked up battle couple, dude finding meaning of life and learning to trust because of one deadly woman, and hot blond guys with supernatural powers and hot dark haired ladies with a huge kill count, boy do I have a series for you.)

Anyway, I don't even know where this is going any more except you should read all the novels I mentioned.

Heal Me, Hold Me, Make Me, Know Me Chapter 3 Part 3: June

QAF, Brian x Justin, Asexual Spectrum Representation, Season 2 re-telling. Part 3: 2800 words

Brian got back on Wednesday around 9:30 pm. It was later than he’d told Justin initially, but not so much later that it’d truly matter. Brian was more than ready to sleep in his own apartment and spend some alone time with the younger man. Despite talking to Justin each night on the phone, just meandering from one pointless topic to the next, Brian desperately wanted to sit on the couch and listen to him ramble.

During Justin’s OT on Monday, he managed to grip a paintbrush the correct way for the first time since before the incident. Brian tried to congratulate him, but Justin quickly cut him off by telling him it wasn’t worth celebrating until he was able to actually paint again. When he wasn’t talking with Justin over the course of those two days, he had heard from Debbie – about Justin’s increased anger issues – and Emmett – about Justin’s refusal to talk about that night at all.

Brian was concerned, but he also thought maybe he needed to give Justin some more time to adjust to each new development in his recovery. The doctors at the rehab center had incessantly reminded him and Jennifer that Justin was in a marathon, not a sprint. They needed to help him keep expectations low but motivation high. However, the fuck that was supposed to happen, Brian still hadn’t figured out.

So, when Brian arrived back from Chicago to find Justin in a rage, throwing things around the loft, he wasn’t overly surprised. He saw scraps of art ripped apart and thrown around the open spaces of his home. Brian quietly closed the door behind him and then leaned against it, waiting for Justin to come down. 

Justin finally noticed his presence and paused, his chest heaving and pencils clenched in his fists so hard, Brian could see the whites of his knuckles. Brian raised his eyebrow at him and quipped.

“I see you’ve been busy. I like what you’ve done with the place.”

“You said you’d be back by late afternoon. It’s almost 10 pm.” It was when Justin uttered these words that Brian saw the fear in his eyes.

“I made partner,” Brian replied simply, in a soft tone. He silently wondered if he should apologize, but being late wasn’t something he regretted, so he opted not to.

Justin shook his head slightly and scoffed. But instead of calling him out for whatever misdeed Brian must’ve done, Justin went over to the corner of the loft where he did art. He wasn’t over his outburst, but the anger he must be feeling was no longer being directed outwards. It was as if Brian’s presence had pushed it back some.

After that, Brian went over to his desk, deciding he needed to make a dent in the number of emails in his inbox. All was quiet for the next ten minutes when Justin started to lose his cool once more. 

The younger man was at an easel his mom had brought by for him that morning, attempting to make big brush strokes with his paintbrush. But, every time he went to do anything other than put the brush to paper, his hand would revolt and start to spasm. Brian watched out of the corner of his eye while continuing to work. He knew that if he interfered, Justin would get even more angry.

“Fuckin Hobbs!” Justin exclaimed before a paintbrush was lobbed toward Brian’s desk, almost hitting the man in the jaw as he crouched over some sign-on papers for Brown Athletics.

Brian looked up at him as he grabbed the brush, stood up, and crossed to the couch, where Justin had sat down, now rubbing his palm as he extended and curled his fingers.

“What was that?” Brian was thoroughly confused. He had no idea who this Hobbs person might be. Well, he assumed it was a person.

“Nothing.” Justin shrugged and shook out his hand.

“Who or what is Hobbs?” Brian sat down next to the blonde and took his hand into his to massage it.

“Hobbs was this guy I went to school with. He used to harass me for being gay.”

“What made you think of him?” Brian gave Justin a steady gaze that told the younger man he wasn’t going to drop the subject. 

“Nothing.” Justin looked away, trying to avoid the truth Brian’s gaze was begging for.

“Okay. Don’t tell me. But just know that by keeping it inside, you’re going to keep getting angrier and angrier instead of moving forward.” Brian stood up and shrugged. “Then you really won’t ever draw or paint again.”

He went toward the bathroom to take a shower. From experience, he knew that Justin needed to be given the authority to pick and choose when he would talk about something. Brian was the same way. He was willing to talk about deeper subjects, but not if someone pushed and pushed until he felt trapped in a corner. So, Brian gave Justin his space and knew the blonde would come around eventually.

What he didn’t expect was for Justin to come into the bathroom just as he was stepping into the shower. Nor did he expect Justin to get undressed and join him under the spray of water. Brian was still trying to bring his brain back online when Justin grinned and spoke.

“I started to remember some stuff during group yesterday, but I didn’t tell anyone. Mostly because I didn’t know if it was real. But, then, last night in my nightmare, the guy who kicked me in the head had the face of my bully from high school, Hobbs.” Justin put some shampoo on his hands and started to rub his hair. When Brian reached forward to take over, the blonde let him without hesitation.

The two of them continued to wash each other's hair and upper body as Brian waited for Justin to lead the conversation further.

"I think he might be one of the guys who attacked me, but I can't know for sure." Justin looked up at Brian, a vulnerable look on his face.

"We could talk to the police if you want. They could look into it. But only if you feel comfortable." Brian wanted Justin to understand that he would always take his lead.

Justin just nodded and wrapped himself around Brian underneath the stream of water. Brian closed his eyes and hooked his chin on Justin’s shoulder. They’d been through quite a bit in the last few weeks, and he knew that the more Justin started to remember, the harder things would get.

“We should tell the police.” Justin finally muttered. Brian smiled as he pressed his lips to Justin’s neck. The younger man moved his head to expose more of his neck and allowed the most intimate touch for them since the bashing.

A week later, Michael showed up at Brian’s office with a sheepish look on his face. Brian acted bored and continued looking over client mockups as he waited for Michael to start the conversation.

“I’m sorry.” Michael finally muttered. He moved further into the office and plopped himself down on the couch.

“Brian, I shouldn’t have said you’d never grow up or that Justin was the enemy because he was changing you.” Michael looked to Brian, but he refused to let Michael off that easily. “Growing up and being more mature isn’t a bad thing, even for you.”

“What made you realize that?” Brian finally made eye contact with Michael. He gave the shorter man a stony look that didn’t reveal any of the multitude of emotions raging inside him.

Michael scratched the side of his head and gave a small chuckle. It was his tell that he was nervous about something. Brian silently observed his friend waiting for whatever Michael’s epiphany-causing event was this time.

“I, um, was talking to Buzzy at the comic book store. And well, he talked about wanting a change in his life and that he might move away. Anyway, the thought of losing my favorite comic book store made me realize that so many things were changing all around me. Then, I thought, maybe Brian needed a change, and Justin gave him that. So, here I am.” Michael shrugged and looked at Brian with a hopeful expression in his eyes.

“Well, Mikey. That’s really insightful of you.” Brian rubbed his mouth to hide his grin.

“But…” Michael responded.

“No but. I just don’t understand how you couldn’t extend me the same courtesy I gave you when you started getting serious with the good doctor.” Brian shrugged. “You’re my oldest friend, Mikey, and yet you’ve done nothing but judge me.”

“What else was I supposed to think? You went from believing in fucking not love one minute and the opposite the next.”

“Who said I believe in love? I’m still very much about fucking, not love, with the added pleasure of spending regular time with a guy I like.” Brian flipped off his computer and stood up, gathering the rest of his things. “Not that it’s any of your business, but I still have sex practically every day.”

Brian left his office, and Michael followed him. “And Justin knows about it?”

“Yes. He encourages it.” Brian nodded goodbye to Cynthia on his way past her desk. “See you tomorrow, Cynthia.”

“Tell Justin I said hello.” Cynthia smiled and waved.

Michael looked around as they walked out the front door of Vanguard. “Wait, you’re leaving already? It’s only 4:30 pm.”

“Justin still gets a bit freaked out if he’s alone for too long. I usually work a bit from the loft in the evenings.” Brian shrugged and climbed into his Jeep. 

“We need to discuss our plans for Pride Weekend, which is this weekend. In case you forgot.” Michael almost shouted at Brian as he prepared to leave the parking garage.

“You’re welcome to come over tonight. Justin has plans to go to dinner with his mom later, so it’ll be just us.” Brian offered up an option.

“Sounds good. I’ll come by the loft in an hour.” Michael waved at him and headed off in the opposite direction.

An hour later, Brian was in the midst of letting Justin let out his anger when the door to the loft slid open. Today, Justin’s target of rage was his and Brian’s wardrobes. Brian had some music playing to keep the neighbors from complaining as Justin stormed about, ranting about people giving up on the cripple. 

“Of course, my mom would value his needs over mine! She told me she forgot. Sure she did! My dad says jump, and she does it. No question. Even now.”

“Hey, Brian.” Michael came up next to Brian, where he sat on the couch. Michael looked toward the bedroom, where Justin was pacing angrily.

“You aren’t going to stop him? He’s throwing your Armani fall collection around.” Michael looked at Brian incredulously.

Brian looked up from the Brown Athletics mockup in his lap, looked at Justin, and then went back to Michael with a shrug.

“He’s not destroying anything. It’s easier on everyone if we just let him work through it.”

“But it’s your Armani Fall Collection.” Michael looked at Brian like he’d grown a second head.

“It’s replaceable if Justin somehow ruins it, which I doubt.” Brian shrugged again. Then he stretched and stood up. “Would you like something to drink?”

Michael followed him to the kitchen. “So, you just let him throw shit around until he’s calmed down?”

“Like I said, it’s better for everyone if I don’t try to stop him.” Brian poured Michael a glass of water. “So, what were you thinking for Pride this year? The usual, go to Babylon and find someone to bring home?”

Just then, Justin came into the kitchen, his chest heaving with each breath. He grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. He exchanged a look with Brian and planted a kiss on the older man’s cheek.

“I’ll put everything back. I promise. I just need a minute.” 

“I’ve told you. You don’t ever have to apologize for getting frustrated.” Brian faced Justin and looked him up and down with a concerned look in his eyes.

“I know. I just hate that I do it. I don’t know why.” Justin looked down at his feet, defeated.

“You have a brain injury. Remember, the doctor told you that it would affect your moods and anger management.” Brian reached out and cupped Justin’s cheek.

“Yeah.” Justin took a deep breath and another swig from his water bottle. “So, what are you guys talking about?”

“Pride!” Michael cut in, surprising Brian. “It’s this weekend. Are you going?”

What little bit of normalcy Justin managed to regain in the last few moments went away, and a cloud moved in at Michael’s innocuous question.

“Why? What do I have to be proud of? That I got bashed in the head and didn’t die?”

“Well,” Michael started and then briefly paused, “Yeah. And to show everyone that you are still you.”

“But I’m not.” Justin glared at Michael, slammed the water on the counter, and walked away back to the bedroom.

Michael followed Justin’s path until he disappeared behind the dividers. Then he turned back to Brian in shock.

“You aren’t encouraging him to go?” Michael whispered.

Brian met him with a steady gaze, “Pot, meet kettle.”

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Michael protested.

“You know exactly what I mean.” Brian leaned his upper body onto his elbows, which were on the countertop. “You’ve never been to a Pride parade in your life. You’re too damn chicken shit to try.”

“That’s not fair. You know I can’t expose my sexuality at my job. I could lose it or any chances I might have at advancing my career.” Michael was getting fired up. Brian wondered how far he could take the conversation.

“Chicken shit,” Brian emphasized, trying to make his point once again. “Your mom begs you every year to march with her, and every year, you try to flirt your way into a one-night stand and go home empty-handed.”

“That’s not true! I get a good fuck. Sometimes.” Michael protested a bit loudly. “Besides, what about you? You never march in the parade either.”

“Maybe not, but I still go every year. And never once do I back down from being exactly who I am, no matter what time of year it is.”

“Yes, because you are the model of what we should all aspire to as gay men.” Michael rolled his eyes and muttered smugly.

“You should be so lucky to be me. I have everything I could ever want.”

Justin came back with an eye roll to Brian. “Yes, because everyone should aspire to be an uncaring man whore who fucks everything that moves.”

“You don’t ever have any complaints.” Brian rolled his lips between his teeth and playfully smirked at Justin.

“I complain all the time. Just not to you.” Justin winked and grabbed Brian’s landline receiver. “That reminds me, I should call Emmett.”

Brian swatted at Justin and muttered, “Smart ass,” under his breath. 

“All kidding aside, Brian’s no apologies, no regrets mantra is actually quite impressive and worth aspiring for.” Justin shrugged, putting the phone back on its cradle without actually making any calls.

“If that’s true, then why aren’t you going to the Pride festivities this weekend?” Michael motioned his hands outward as if challenging Justin to find a way out of the non-existent hole Michael believed him to be in.

“Because I’m a coward. I didn’t fight off my attackers. Plus, I still can’t handle crowds of people.” Justin shrugged.

Michael and Brian exchanged looks before Brian reached out and grabbed Justin’s hand. “I’d be there with you. If you decided to go that is.”

Then Michael did the biggest show of good faith Brian had seen from him in a very long time. He extended an olive branch to Justin.

“Tell you what. If you brave the crowds to go to Pride this weekend. I will do the same and march with my mom. It’ll be a first time for both of us.”

Justin looked from Brian to Michael and back to Brian. Confusion was etched all over his face. This wasn’t the Michael Justin knew and Brian could tell it was unnerving him. Brian shrugged and gave Justin an encouraging smile.

“I’ll think about it.” Justin finally conceded. 

Brian knew that was the most the young man could offer at this time. Braving the crowds at Pride would be well beyond his current comfort zone, even if he was surrounded by Brian and Emmett. Justin probably wasn’t ready to do something as huge as march in the parade, but if given the right level of motivation he could be convinced to stand on the sidelines and watch.

It was a huge step forward for the blonde, regardless of what he decided. Though Brian suspected Justin was leaning toward being an observer instead of being the only one to stay home.

— In which, you are dragged to a college party by your friends, where you meet a friendly face.

Your heart raced as the loud music and voices got closer and closer. You looked out the window of your friend’s car, grimacing as you saw the building before you. It was a big, two story frat house that sat on campus which was now completely trashed, yard covered in empty cups. You sighed to yourself, dreading the night ahead of you. Your friends, along with yourself had only arrived about 20 minutes late and the party was already in full effect.

“Alright guys, let’s get going,” Justin, one of your friends instructed.

You exited the car together, closing the door being you as the smell of beer flared through your nose. You followed as Justin lead the group inside, the music now blaring through your ears as strobe lights nearly blinded your eyes. Almost instantly, the group split up into their separate ways. You assumed they were off to find some beverages or girls to talk with.

You didn’t even agree to go to the party in the first place. You were easily aggravated with crowded areas and loud noises, unable to think with so much going on at once. However, Justin had assured you that he would stick by your side the whole time. So much for that plan.

Usually, you would’ve already been out the door, but without Justin, he didn’t have a ride back to your dorm, which was a good distance from the party. You sighed to yourself, squeezing through the large crowd, trying to find a beverage stand. You soon found the kitchen, spotting a plastic table set up for drinks. After about 2 minutes of getting through the tiny gaps between people, you had finally made it to the table, pouring a cup of fruit punch.

With a smile, you took a sip, cringing as the liquid burned down your throat. Of course it was spiked punch, why wouldn’t it be at a college party? Without anything to do with the cup, you continued to carry it in your hand. Maybe that way you wouldn’t look like a total loser.

Spoke too soon. The red liquid poured all over your shirt as two football players who were roughhousing bumped straight into you. The two didn’t even stop to see if you were okay, they just pushed past you and continued their play fighting. You should’ve just walked home. You dropped the cup to the floor, quickly finding the stairs to the second floor to search for a bathroom.

Of course, all of the doors upstairs were closed. It would be a matter of luck to find the bathroom. The first rooms down the hallway were messy bedrooms, the next seemed to be filled with chatter. It was best you didn’t go sneaking into any of those rooms. You finally reached the end of the hall with no luck, silently pleading for the last room to contain a bathroom. You turned the knob entering the room, being met with a much bigger and tidier bedroom this time, however, there was a blonde haired girl laying on the bed reading a book.

“Shit! I’m so sorry. I didn’t think anyone was in here. I’m so so sorry,” you quickly went to close the door, but the girl suddenly spoke with a laugh.

“You’re completely fine, you don’t have to go,” the girls voice told him.

You opened the door again, finally meeting her eyes, standing in place as the girl adjusted herself, now sitting on the edge of the bed with her book closed. You glanced down at the book which looked to be a familiar psychology textbook. You then noticed that this wasn’t the first time you had seen the girl before him. She sat two seats down from you in your psychology lectures. You’d be lying if you said you hadn’t stolen a few glances from her. She was beautiful.

“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to intrude on your studying. I just- I have a bit of a situation here,” you said, looking down at the red stained shirt that stuck to your skin.

“It’s really no problem. I could use the company anyways, I’ve been reading the same page over and over again from all the noise. Too hard to focus,” she said with a soft laugh. “Here, there’s a bathroom right in here,” she said, leading you into the bathroom.

You followed behind her, watching as she prepared a warm wet towel for you to clean up with. You stood beside her as she handed over the towel, responding with a tight smile of appreciation. You looked in the mirror, wiping off your face first, along with your red stained hands before moving to your shirt.

“So, let me guess. You either are really clumsy, or you got a first hand experience with the jocks,” the girl guessed, causing your to manage smile at her in the mirror.

“Looks like we’ve got a winner. Some assholes from the football team don’t know what self awareness is,” you said, raising your brow as you shook your head.

You eventually gave up on trying to clean the stained shirt, setting down the towel over the sink. You then turned to the girl again, thinking about whether or not to bring up their psychology class together. Oh, what the hell, why not?

“You’re in Professor Wright’s psychology class. Jennifer, right?” you asked, hoping the girl would at least notice who you were. It would be quite an awkward moment if she didn’t. Luckily, her face lit up.

“Yeah! I knew I noticed you from somewhere. It’s Y/N, right? You can call me JJ,” she said, smiling as she held her hand out towards you.

“Well, it’s great to finally meet you JJ. If you don’t mind me asking— what are you studying psych for?” you asked, deciding to move the conversation back into the bedroom where you now sat on the floor, back leaned against the side of the queen sized mattress. JJ soon joined you, sitting at your side.

“I’m wanting to go into the FBI someday, work for forensic psychology. Maybe be a profiler one day, but I’m mostly focused on becoming a communications liaison for them. I think I’d be better off helping out the families while the others do their work,” JJ explained. You immediately had a burst of excitement.

“No way, I’m actually wanting to be a profiler for the FBI! I just think the human mind is so fascinating. Learning about how each individual’s brain works is just so interesting to me. Did you know that-“ you quickly cut yourself off, realizing that you were rambling out of excitement. You didn’t know many people who had the same interests as you, some of your “friends” even tended to make fun of you for it.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to ramble like that. Bad habit of mine,” you apologized, lowering your head in embarrassment. You hoped that you hadn’t already annoyed one of the only nice people in school.

“Don’t apologize, Y/N. I’m just as interested as you are. Besides, who knows? We might be working together some day,” she said with a gentle smile towards you which you gladly returned.

“Hey, um. I know we don’t know each other that well, but would you maybe want to… get out of here? I know a couple of restaurants still open a couple blocks down. My treat,” you offered, getting up to your feet again, offering you hand to JJ.

“I’d really like that,” JJ simply said, smiling again as she took your hand.

The two of you eventually managed your way through the still packed crowd, wasting no time to rush out of the door together. You walked side by side, hands gently brushing up against each other. You finally took the initiative of slipping her hand into your own, looking down at her to see if she was comfortable. When you looked down, JJ was already smiling up at you, giving your hand a gentle squeeze of reassurance. You smiled to yourself as you continued down the sidewalk. Maybe college parties weren’t all that bad.

The ILBW claims to have 78K followers now on the new site called “meghan.” For starters, her so called marketing expert Kent Moore who runs OneEyedSocial…that sounds solid…thinks she will shoot to the top ten in the world…I guess he has never heard of being Markled. The Daily Mail article says the ILBW could charge a million per post with brands wanting to work with her…who might that be after years of modeling disasters? The top 20 millionaire level influencers right now in order of highest paid down are: 2 football/soccer stars, Kylie Jenner, Selena Gomez, Dwayne Johnson, Ariana Grande, Kim Kardashian, Beyonce Knowles, Khloe Kardashian, Justin Bieber, Kendall Jenner, Nicki Minah, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Kourtney Kardashian, more soccer/football players, Miley Cyrus, and Kevin Hart who is at $780,000 per post.

“on average, content creators can expect to earn anywhere from $0.01 to $0.05 per 1,000 views.” I crunched ILBW’s numbers: 78,000 followers X $0.05= $3,900.00. “On average, influencers earn $2,970 per month with their Instagram account, reaching an annual income of nearly $36,000. Nano influencers (having between 1K and 10K followers) earn $1,420 per month, for an average annual income of around $17,000.Aug 5, 2023”“You must have a payout account to receive your payment. If you don’t add a payout account: Within 5 months or if you exceed earnings of $500 per monetization tool or $1500 across tools, you’ll no longer be able to monetize on Instagram. Within 6 months, you’ll forfeit and waive all rights to receive your payment.” This is taxable income that can be traced.

“Instagram does not pay for likes. Even when the social media platform launched ways for creators to make money, the company did not include ‘likes’ in the benchmarks creators must meet. Likes are, however, important to show potential sponsors that you get good engagement on your IG page.” Brands are the ones who set the payrolls.

This is nuts and seems like voyeurism! The owners of brands better be sure this is who they want to identify with as they spend millions and millions on posts by them hoping for sales. If I see Markle in it, I will find another brand to satisfy my needs. Over and out for now.
