Why would the dogs coloration contribute to deafness?

There is actually a good answer for this!

There are two coat colors that I’m aware of that directly correlate to deafness.

The first is double merle. The merle gene is very common mostly in herding breeds, but does make its appearance in other breeds such as the great dane, the dauschund, and the chihuahua. The flashy steel-grey (called blue) background with striking black splotches is a really popular color and a lot of people like it. However! If a dog inherits two copies of the merle gene, it comes out a mostly-white animal often blind, deaf, or deafblind due to the way pigment interacts with the inner ears and due to underdeveloped, undersized, or non-present eyes. In other words:

This dog is merle. This dog is not at risk for deafness due to only having one copy of the merle gene. If this dog is deaf or becomes deaf, it’s not because of the dog’s color.

These dogs are double merle. They’re both deaf as a result of having two copies of the merle gene. These dogs result when someone breeds two merle dogs together, whether on purpose or by accident. Certain color patterns can hide merle and make it hard to know that the dog should not be bred to another merle dog, but DNA test now exist to prevent this outcome.

The other color is more a pattern than a color, and it’s piebald. Due to the way the piebald gene works, and the way pigment is used both in the inner ear and within the innards of the eye itself, if the dog’s white markings affect the ears or the eyes it also can cause deafness and blindness. To be clear, most breeds that are piebald do not allow what’s termed as “extreme piebald”, or they rate it as a fairly serious fault, or they require the white to not touch the head, or if they do allow the white to touch the head it can’t touch the eyes or the ears... because they want to avoid this outcome. The only breed I know of that breaks this rule is dalmatians, who get their spots from a form of extreme piebaldism and as a result have high rates of deafness within the breed. This can be fixed by breeding for dark/solid ears and more patches than spots, but so far fanciers of the breed have been pretty resistant to that idea. I have no stake in the breed so I can’t tell you if it’s for good reason or not.

The boxer, for instance, is a breed that shows piebaldism (the white markings) to a small degree. Boxers are not supposed to have a lot of white on the head and never over the ears or eyes, but are allowed to have some minimal white trim and a small blaze.

Because the piebald gene cannot be predicted, some dogs are more affected by piebaldism than others. These are called “white boxers”, and as you can see the white takes over the entire body to the point where there’s just a small patch of their color left. Often times this removes most or all of the color from the dog’s head, which is not desireable because it can affect eyesight and eye color (working breeds prefer darker eye colors as lighter eye colors are more sensitive to harsh sunlight) as well as hearing ability. While it’s not a guarantee that either of these dogs are deaf, they are at risk for deafness due to being extreme piebalds whose ears lack pigment.

Dalnatians are, as an entire breed, extreme piebalds. Dogs that are patchy and with darker ears like this one are less likely to have piebald-related deafness.

Dogs that are more white, with more spots and spotted ears like this one, are more likely to have piebald-related deafness.

The Dalmatian Club of America does not allow deaf dalmatians to breed, so since this is at a dog show I have to assume that neither of these dogs is deaf. However, again due to the unpredictable nature of how piebald works, there is also no guarantee that they will not produce deaf puppies. The Dalmatian Club of America estimates that roughly a third of dalmatians worldwide are born deaf in at least one ear. Dalmatians that are born deaf in both ears are to be culled at birth. 

Now here’s the hard part. Scroll back up to that merle border collie. Guess what that dog is as well! Piebald! Sushi, my mountain dog? Piebald! Fae, my brindle chihuahua? Piebald! And there is no guarantee that none of these dogs will throw a deaf puppy because that’s just how piebald works.

Here’s the even harder part: the piebald gene, like floppy ears, is a direct result of domestication. It is proof that these animals are no longer wild. It’s also possible that completely breeding the piebald back out of these animals is either impossible, or will net us dogs that are significantly less domesticated.

What was the blazed post

It was an advertisement for my paintings which contained 8 diverse examples of my portraiture, and one was a frontal nude of a marble statue (not suggestively posed, not detailed in nipples or genitals, just standing) and instead of staff telling me it was too spicy to blaze, they blazed it with a maturity flag so even though you can scroll past it on your dash you won't see the pictures unless you have YOUR dash set to show mature content. It's set to hide it for new users and users who didn't know that was a thing.

For blaze people scrolling past= views, even if the users did not view any part of the post besides the maturity flag it still counted that as an 'impression' so I paid for 2,500 people to not even view the work. And I told staff about it and they were basically like 'fuck you nobody liked your sexual art and we will not refund you fuck you'

Is this a new bad Tumblr update? Did we lose the ability to search one specific tag across the whole hellsite? On the search results page, I try to click a tag so it’s just

and it shows that in the URL box for a second before instantly redirecting back to

Hold up, I just tried it again with a one-word search and the /tagged/ worked fine. Did my problem only appear because my search was multiple words with spaces between them? 2: katie actually isn't mine! She's owned by @/syderyvuris on twitter. They made her into a Rivals fighter which is how I (and presumably most people) found out about her, but they've had her for a few years before that

The lore on her is really vague. All I know is that she's a member of a team of mercenaries/rebels/etc, has a lot of guns, and is powerful enough to level multiple cities by herself (awesome)

3: mercura is blatantly inspired by katie in several ways, but I tried to distinguish them as much as I could without making them something I didn't want them to be.

Mercura is kind of a jerk. They act like me, except if I had significantly more confidence and significantly less direct concern for other people (think incineroar from smash. That kind of attitude). They design weapons primarily just to test/amuse theirself. Most of them aren't very practical but are very funny

Moveset-wise, they're a combo-based rushdown fighter with one powerful trapping tool. I'll post a list of all of their moves once I make more progress on the sprites/programming

Design-wise, their jacket is literally my jacket. The rest was pretty much just improvised to look nice, except the welding mask, which actually gives at least a hint at what they do

1. As for more about them well basically they’re the puppeteer/ringleader of the multiverse having basically the powers of a god (and being considered one by many universe’s religions) they aren’t really good or evil and like the jester is known as is a bit of a wild card, their actions are almost always motivated by either curiosity or boredom. They like to go around and mess with timelines, kill that person, make sure that person doesn’t succeed in what they’re trying to do, just to see how much they can push the story and it’s characters. They don’t really have morals and see basically everyone as characters in a story, their worth only extending as far as their ability to make a story interesting. Tho they do have a sense of guilt for their actions, even if they act like everything is fine.

2. They like make puppets! Tho I guess that fact isn’t as wholesome if you consider that a lot of those puppets are dead people whose bodies have been turned immortal and used as literal puppets for Klips entertainment. There is one living puppet tho.

3. Their backstory is basically the same as Bill Cyphers except it was an accident. They where basically and 8 year old thrown into the vastness of the multiverse with nothing but a traumatic backstory and a unicorn plushie.

Joltik used to get on my bed with me to cuddle but now he is a galavantula and he is too big and steps on me. How do I untrain this?

Step one would be to make sure your galvantula has a comfortable bed of his own. Provide him with nesting materials and encourage him to craft his own nest in a clean space large enough to allow him to rest comfortably. I would also recommend housing the bed in the same room as yours (just be sure that it’s more comfortable and appealing than your own), then slowly moving it to a different room if you so choose. Housing your bed and his in the same room at first will encourage him to use his own, as you’re basically placing his resting area in a comfortable, familiar location, rather than someplace he wouldn’t recognize immediately upon waking up.

After that, begin training in the same manner you would with any other pokémon for any other reason. If he tries to climb back into bed with you, gently nudge him in the direction of his bed. If he immediately goes to his bed and rests, reward him with praise and/or treats. Continue doing this until he goes to his bed without any issue (including getting out of it in the middle of the night to climb into yours).
