The rest of the Avengers are in this for personal gain, except for Clint, he just enjoys being a dick. And some things shouldn't be a chore.

Happy New Year everyone!! With 2023 drawing to a close, it's time to post my stats from the @fanfic-reading-challenge 2023!

This is my first time participating in the event and I've had a great time! I ended up reaching Regular mode (which was my goal!) with 88 tasks completed! Biggest of thanks to Juulna and Jandy for putting this all together, and everyone in the discord for being so kind and keeping me going. Now onto my fanfic stats for 2023!

I'm hoping that next year I can get more fics read and read at a speed I used to. I know that I haven't read nearly as much as other people this year, but I have been struggling with my reading lately, and this challenge was a great way to keep me motivated and make a dent in my to-read list (though honestly the list is bigger now than it was at the beginning of the year!). It's also been great to look back at how much I read in a year and see all the fics I got through!

2023 FFRC - July🌞

Hello friends! July passed in the blink of an eye. I'm definitely not looking forward to the end of summer (because it snows like 9 months of the year where I live and I just want to freaking enjoy my back-yard okay!?) Anyway - I hope you've all been enjoying the sunshine.

As far as the @fanfic-reading-challenge goes- I’m 5 tasks away from finishing the whole thing - (4 of which I can’t finish until December) so that’s neat. Gotta get up to 15 million words and then I'll just be waiting to finish the monthly tasks. This month I got to help Juulna sort out next year's list of tasks though and that was a super fun time.

As you can see, I read lots of really great stories this month. I reread a lot of fic and then double read fics too - there isn't a lot of new content for Wenvier so I reread over and over again. It's never a bad time to reread. I also read a Needle Bughead story that I'd held off on because of the tags - but it was wonderful - as all of her stories are. I'm glad I came back to that one. And given the circumstances, I think I'm going to deep dive into some Fexi favourites this week - so if you have any suggestions, please send them my way. 💔

Xavier Knows Wednesday Loves Him (series) by Agmo (Wenvier - T/E 4 fics) 

Summary: Xavier keeps a running list in a notebook in his desk drawer.

Notes: This story started out with one story with bullet points of how Xavier knew Wednesday Loved him - then expanded into this SUPER cute fic with a chapter for each one of those points (but the chapters are sometimes only a few lines long). Then there are a couple more one-shots to really flesh out some of the bigger points. And each and every one of them was delightful. All told, the series of 4 stories is only 20,000 words, so it's not long but it's wonderful and funny and touching and perfect. Give it a try!

With the glaring exception that he can feel where his wings have been clipped— and that he can nudge the material world a little, here and there, from time to time.  He has childhood memories, a normal human’s wants and desires, but he also knows he’s got a divine mission. And that he has it because he fucked up somehow. Ash was supposed to be his redemption. He was supposed to watch over him, keep him safe.  -- or: Fallen Angel Fez has one last shot at redemption, his new charge Lexi Howard. Guardian Angels probably shouldn't be down bad for the humans in their safekeeping, though. Notes: I have a lot of feelings right now. After yesterday's news - the first thing I did was go find and read a Fexi fic to calm my broken heart. This one is SO good. Fez is SO well written. And there is a lot of neat religiosity that fits with him too. It hurts to read because we've lost Angus - but it has a happy ending and it's beautiful. So you should read it too!

I was wondering if you Mods would consider making a list of the movies the plots where picked from, because I'm not known for writing fluff (or happy endings) and I think actually seeing the movie(s) the prompt(s) are based off, would actually help me in being able to participate in this event! Short answer: Pepper ( @betheflame ) is working on a list and I will post it as soon as she gets it to me.

Directly from her: “Tell them yes, ish, I’ll make a list of recommended Hallmark flicks to help with the fluffspiration.”

When Pepper was creating the prompt list, some were taken directly from movies, but others were merged together with one or more additional movies to create a more fic-friendly vibe or atmosphere. Since she watches tons of these movies, Pepper has forgotten the names of some of the movies she borrowed from, but only for a few of them. (How the heck do you watch so many of these syrupy movies, Pepper? I would go insane. ((Hi, I’m the mod who severely dislikes Hallmark but am here because I love Pepper to hell and back.))

So Pepper is going to list all the movies the prompts are lifted from, as well as any additional movies that she thinks would be great help! I’ll also make sure she posts some ideas on where you can find them, but often if you have any TV package, you have a Hallmark Channel that goes with it, or you’ll have access to the Hallmark Channel’s online streaming/movie archive, through your TV provider credentials. So for now, you might check that out, or Youtube for Hallmark stuff. I personally wouldn’t know, so yeah, I’ll make sure Pepper disseminates that information along with the movie titles.

My Reylo ABO Influences

So I started my first ABO fic, Gravitation. It’s heavy on world building, my starting point was to imagine how early society with ABO incorporated would have been, then to take that and to move it forward to a modern day and come up with what a world would be like at that point. It seemed like many of the changes we’ve seen in regards to gender (and sexuality in regards to gender) would probably have also happened with designation--- fight for designation equality, fight for sexual equality outside of the norm accepted pairings, designation identity becoming more fluid. 

I think I’m doing a good job of making my take a unique one, but I do have to say there were a lot of ABO fics that did influence me in various ways or introduced concepts that I think I’m incorporating into my own fic. It only seemed right to give a tip of my hat to these fics, so hence, I created this list.

This is more or less a rec list, but specifically a rec list of Reylo ABO fics that I think had interesting elements and takes on the trope in a way that had some influence on me.

I apologize for the long ramble, here’s my list--

Haze by Juulna/ @juuls - Wonderful canonverse Reylux ABO fic. It’s unfinished, sadly, but it was one of my first trips into ABOverse. It that amazes me how well Juuls managed to do some serious world building in a very short bit of writing. One concept that I really liked was that of certain designation pairs being illegal (First Order bans Alpha/Alpha, though Hux and Kylo are a secrete Alpha/Alpha pair). 

 The Thick of It by bitterbones/ @dvrkrey - This is predominately smut (really delicious smut), but there’s a refined and subtle level of world building where you can just start to imagine what these tribal ABO nomads were like. It’s the template of early ABO society that I took and then said what happens if you fast forward that to a modern day.

Summer Heat by IshaRen -  Seriously might be one of the best ABOs out there and one of the first I read that really went to the idea of what a modern ABO society might have ended up like and what the societal fallout might be. It’s also wonderfully written, deliciously slow burn, and has world building that is to die for.

Algorithms by @grey-orchids Another modern ABO au that has some great world building and the struggle designation leads to in that modern universe of mind over biology. 

Speed and Heat by AMLark - Modern ABO, dealing with complexities designation adds to society and the struggle for equality. Also added some complexity to the interaction between alpha and omega that goes beyond just sex.

Blow your Smoke to Fog the Mirror by @rey-kryze - Modern ABO, nice touches that paint a picture of how designation in a modern universe creates a tricky mine field for one to navigate. It creates a lovely, complex world.

Auribus Teneo Lupum by @malevolent-reverie - A unique take on ABO that also includes the soulmate trope and is kind of a black comedy. The only fic I know that had Ben/Rey as an Alpha/Alpha pair Excellent world building, includes concepts of discriminatory laws and the battle of instinct vs will.

Your Pretty Little Heart by @ever-so-reylo - Primarily a character drama, it paints a beautiful, complicated picture of how designation would effect relationships, and how even when instinct is driving you together you can still totally fuck it up when your poorly communicating idiots.

Okay, whoo. So I’m sure I’m missing some and will think of them as soon as I hit post, but right now that’s all I can think of.

Tony’s better now. You can even say he’s superior. But all the money, alcohol, and sex can’t stop the incursions, and when his world is destroyed, he ends up on an earth ten years younger than his own.

An old friend turns up and asks Tony for a favour. Testing out equipment that Ty Stone has problems with sounds like a time-consuming and invasive endeavor, but of course, Tony agrees to be shot up with an implant and date whoever the Disc chooses for him, nevermind that there's only one person he really wants. Besides, who would say no a string of prearranged dates with beautiful people?

But then, the first date is with Steve Rogers, Tony's best friend.

The Honeymoon Suite by CapnShellhead, 30k, 616

Wade Wilson is getting married and he's assembling a team to get him to Vegas for his bachelor party. Requiring a team with a special set of skills, he asks Wolverine, Spider-Man, Special Agent Preston and Captain America to come along. Steve decides this would be a wonderful opportunity to fix a rift between him and an old friend.

Where Can You Find Fics That Won Awards?

Hello!

It has come to my attention (from myself) that some people have no idea that Awards were even a thing. They were innocent... and then they were controversial. *sighs sadly at lost joy*

But. I would like to share with you a few web pages and resources and websites that I remember from my way-too-young-to-be-reading-fic-but-was-anyway-days and hopefully you’ll find some new treasures just like I am (re)discovering!

This is, yes, a task on the Fic Reading Challenge, but only on the Hard Mode version. Feel free to skip this, or just throw a completed task on there anyway even if you, like me, don’t plan to complete ALL of the Hard Mode (me, read 90% of the challenge in one ship? HAHAHAHA)

If Book Riot counts for anything, I’d call their list of the 50 best HP fics ‘awards’ Because come on, it’s Book Riot <3

The fic at the top of the list was actually just recced highly on that gifset going around with the wandless magic wizard reading A Brief History of Time (you know the one!!! - @ecrivainsolitaire was kind enough to remind me of this delightful work) and I for sure am going to be reading this fic before I die. I mean, dudes, ladies, folks, this fic has over 36,000 reviews! Okay, I’m done. :P Off to lose myself in a world where Harry Potter was raised with science.

XENA AWARDS - Need I say more?

The Golden Yodas - 2001-2010 - 2014 - 2015 - 2016 - 2017 (though I do question if the vaunted Jedi Council actually read anything on AO3 - I recognize nothing but that does not discredit the quality of their work! I think it was simply open to just their forum, that’s all.)

Criminal Minds: Profiler’s Choice Awards 2017

Literally like 123 different awards forums on FFN; I’m kind of in awe.

2019 Drarry Awards

As mentioned above, controversy has always been a part of fanfiction awards (I myself remember a spectacular blowout in the SW Sequel Trilogy fandom based on Tumblr/AO3/Discord that basically kaiboshed that idea pretty quick) but there still are some more recent awards, which is great! If you read the first link above (The Fanlore site one) there is some explanation of why this is contoversial but also a hypothesis that Awards were the precursor to the now much more popular rec lists. I can believe it!

If you can’t find a fic with an award that you like, choose a fic rec list with, say, 200+ notes, or something suitable for the size of your fandom (whether smaller or larger), and then list said fic and include a link to the rec list you pulled it from.

Like I’ve mentioned before, this isn’t a strict Reading Challenge.

"OK this series has been going on for 2 years now and I should summarize it better.

The first part is several decades of, largely, Geralt and Jaskier's interactions, as they both fumble together toward some kind of meaningful understanding. That section largely concludes with a Jaskier/Geralt/Yennefer endgame.

Then there's a time jump, and the series picks up after the events of the Witcher 3 games. I follow Lambert as he copes with grief, and Keira as she learns new things about herself, and the lives they make.

I decided to tell the story of how Ciri became Empress after W3, which intersects with Keira and Lambert's adventures; I read the books somewhere in this and got invested in some of the themes they brought up. And entangled with this, I got interested in the politics of the North, especially the Upper Aedirn Free State and the threads laid down in the Witcher 2 game that didn't exactly get resolved in Witcher 3, and so I have several stories dealing with that thread, which will intersect with the other stories in the same timeline."

After Graves is found and healed, he gets to know Newt a little better and falls in love. He quickly realises that Newt has been hurt in the past even without the constant messages from Theseus that hell is going to rain down on anyone in MACUSA even looking the wrong way at Newt.

I want to see Percival slowly gaining Newt's trust, then becoming part of his family and after months of careful wooing finally having his personal happy end.

Bonus: Newt has been in love with Graves for years hearing tales from his brother. The incident with Grindelwald was a huge blow to his ego until he realised that it wasn't Graves. Still he's too shy to make any first move towards the real Graves that is more than friendship.
