I just got done re-reading Peter Nimble and the Fantastic Eyes, and Sophie Quire and the Last Storyguard. Honestly these two books defined so much of what I love in fiction, so drawing this scene from Sophie Quire MADE MY DAY!

A children’s book I wrote with @louproux turned one year old today, or rather it’s made a year since it’s been published. It was a passion project we both wrote and illustrated together a little before and after I graduated. It still means a lot to me even now, it’s about friendship and is a dedication to our own.
It’s about a star named Sol, who falls to earth and has to find a way to return to her home. Along the way she meets and befriends Fael, a mysterious human who harbors a well kept secret (a werewolf’s curse).

It’s not like I didn’t pick up dark themes reading books as a kid, but it really puts things into perspective sometimes when you go back and re-read them as an adult who’s closer to the parents’ ages, now.
Sometimes “dark” and “unsettling” turns to you being horrified by how deeply disturbing the situation actually is.
I think that’s also the mark of a fantastic work of fiction, though: when you perfectly understand everything from the child character’s perspective reading it at her age, then again through the parents’ eyes when you’re an adult.
