Brief overview about historical Japanese writing direction

I'm finally getting into the ADV femme fatale for real now (here's my prior post on it, has a download link too since it's free) and I just remembered some cool historical detail from the navigation screen. In the past, horizontal writing in Japanese was done from right-to-left!

Looking at the center part with the text "宅自", that's actually the reverse of the more modern way of writing it (found in the bottom-left) of "自宅" (one's home)!

I'll go into greater detail with the rest of this post.

では、左から右に進む横書きはどこで生まれたのか？　これは、日本人が西洋の言語に触れた江戸～明治初期。左から右に読む横書きの日本語が初めて登場したのは、外国語の辞書だったとされています。 これにより大正～昭和初期は、日本古来の＜右→左＞と西洋渡来の＜左→右＞が混在していました。

According to this article, it seems that during the Edo~Meiji period when Japan first started engaging with foreign writing for the first time is when the style of going from left-to-right horizontally started to take off.

So during the Taisho~Showa periods, both the right-to-left and left-to-right styles both existed!

東京朝日新聞（1942年6月6日）の見出しは右書き。「特殊潜航艇・マダガスカル・濠洲を奇襲」と書かれています。

femme fatale is a game taking place during the Taisho period, and it's definitely interesting to note that the creators made the ADV navigation menu use text like that! I haven't played too many games set in this period, nor read much literature from it, so I'm not sure if this is like "characterization" or not, but I do like the attention to detail and being reminded that this was a thing lol

If you want to go into some further reading, this article might interest you, and it's a great read since it clears up a lot of misconceptions regarding horizontal writing and goes into greater detail about a lot of stuff. Just a warning though, all of this is in Japanese since I don't know any sources available on this in English lol
