Case File nº221: Kabukicho

Just watched "Case File nº221: Kabukicho " also known as Kabukicho Sherlock. It is a very new take on the Holmes characters we know. (Won't spoil - you will be amazed to see Mrs. H and Sherlock's hobby ) . I didn't expect it to be this good. And perhaps the best Reichenbach ever. So much soul in it also with an almost Johnlock kissing trope (almost) 🤩 They are amazing. I initially complained about Sherlock's look but the characterisation is fantastic ❤️😭 . What I am trying to say that it has only one season with 24 episodes , it is weird but beautiful just like you - so watch it 🤩 .

A Quick Review

So I just binged this tonight through my funimation streaming account.  I had a lot of fun guessing which original cases the episodes were based on, and got pretty quickly invested in these characters.  A lot of them were silly, and ridiculous, and poor Watson spent a large part just trying to tell Sherlock why he came to see him.  

The setting is more dark and a touch dystopian, made even more blatant with the large wall keeping the poorer and richer parts of the city apart with a very hostile checkpoint between the two for people wanting to go to the other side.  

I am not aware of any season 2 in the making, and even so it would be an extreme divergence from what the show has been until now due to how episode 11 ended.  With absolute spoilers no matter how I phrase.

I highly recommend it, however.

Trigger warnings: body mutilation, blood, dismemberment, child abduction, attempted child abduction, attempted human trafficking, sexual child abuse mention/referenced/hinted strongly, drugs, people being drugged, roofies, sex being strongly hinted at scenes with nothing explicit. - I mean... Jack the Ripper is an ongoing problem they face so be prepared.

With a darker setting that they try to be humorous in I found that some of the darker themes were hitting me harder, as if I had momentarily forgotten the reality that was present.  

There is also a particular element that if we were not in the political climate that we are in I would not feel the need to weigh the representations, however, I fear that the nonbinary gender conforming characters got the short end of the stick.  I do applaud there being more than you realize at first glance, some of them are blink and you miss it because it isn’t as important to the characters.

“No matter what happens, I’ll always have your back.”

“Thank you, that means a lot.”

They support these characters and care for them as they are... however the happy endings percentage for these characters are distressing, not including the other glaring problem which is a huge spoiler.

But if you can set that aside I do recommend this telling of Sherlock Holmes.

And maybe do a quick google of rakugo first, as I appreciate this artistic expression more than when I thought Sherlock had a split personality thing going on.
